Choosing pictures and stories created and written by qathet region students to feature in our 2025 Holiday Greetings edition was a difficult endeavour.

Peak staff divvied up hundreds of submissions to read and consider before deciding on the final selections that grace the following pages. Once again, the burgeoning creativity of students in the region impressed one and all, and provided us with a festive boost to the holiday season.

Grandma has to put up the Christmas tree, but she puts it in a certain way every time. She has to move all the furniture, so she has room.

She is a bit old now, so she needs help.

Grandpa and Uncle do not help, so I can help her. First, Grandma has to move the heavy furniture that is a lot heavier than the furniture at my house. Always help her every year, but don’t have to move the furniture, because I am too little.

eggs in them. We took one for our house. I am going to do this for my Christmas every year.

I think we have two trees in our house. One is in the entrance room and right now one is in our living room behind the three windows.

My favourite ornament is the Grinch bauble.

I like its face.

I am looking forward to Christmas. My sister and I made Christmas masks at day care last year with a Grinch face and a stick on it. We can put our eyes behind it and it is a lot of fun.

Snowball Fight P A R K E R • Grade one Texada Elementary School

Once upon a time a kid went to play with friends. It started snowing and they decided to have a snowball fight. One made a snowball and it hit a kid’s face and snow got in his hat.

Another kid threw a snowball with a rock in it. A kid got hit and it kind of hurt, so he took a rest. Kids got on one half of the river and some on the other. An orca was swimming in the river. One kid threw a snowball and it hit the orca. There were a couple of rocks in it.

One kid wanted to make a snowman.

The kid started building a snowman. He made a big snowball but it broke!

Another kid made a snowball and rolled

it over. Then another kid rolled his snowball over but he couldn’t lift it up. He tried again but it fell onto him. He threw it into the river and got really cold. The kid made a big snowball and then the orca brought the little snowball.

One of the kids dropped a rock onto another kid. The kids kept building. One kid got rocks and put them on. One got the carrot but he dropped it in the snow.

The kid found another carrot and put it on with a hat and a scarf. They tried to find sticks but couldn’t find any. A friend brought two sticks from a Christmas tree and the Christmas snowman was finished.

One time there was a boy named Emmett. He wanted to build a snowman. He built a snowman, but it fell down. Emmett was sad. His mom and dad came. They helped him by stabilizing it. It worked.

He was happy, but then something got out of control. They were having a snowball fight.

Emmett got a snowball in the face. It was fun. Who threw that snowball? It was Emmett’s brother, Nate.

Emmett and his mom and dad were attacked by his brothers, Sam and Nate and Evelyn. It was so fun. Emmett, and his parents hid behind the big snowman.

The snowball fight went on and on until the snowman was a pile of snow. The end.

Grade two Edgehill Elementary School Once Santa was delivering presents and then there was a storm. His battery died and his sleigh fell, his reindeer got tired!

He was sad, he wanted to deliver presents to the kids. So he got out of his sleigh and jumped house to house delivering the presents. He tried really hard to deliver presents. He ate milk and cookies too.

The kids were so happy in the morning. But Santa was the happiest of them all. He was so glad he delivered the presents!

Once upon a time there was a house with Santa and his two sisters. His sisters’ names were Sana and Hannah. Santa went to check the plants outside. While Santa went to the plants Hannah and Sana went to get cookies to surprise Santa.

When Santa came in, he saw the cookies and looked around and ate the cookies and… Happy Birthday! Turns out it was Santa’s birthday all along.

After that it was bedtime and they had a good sleep and they lived happily ever after.

Grade two Westview Elementary School Once an elf named Jude was at the city. He was feeling sad because he wanted a cozy stuffed Rudolf but the store was closed. He tried to make a cozy stuffed Rudolph but Elf didn’t have any tools to build the cozy stuffed Rudolph.

He asked for tools for Christmas after he went home to make his Christmas list and he thought to himself what else he wanted for Christmas. Then he thought he wanted a Dasher stuffy. He also wanted a cozy stuffed Prancer. After he was done thinking about his list he went home to make his Christmas list.

When he was done with his Christmas list he went to have a cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows and he liked it. After he drank his hot chocolate he was very tired so he went to bed. It was Christmas night and Santa was very busy with all of the kids’ toys and he was having a lot more toys than he usually had and it was a lot of work.

The kids were so excited about Christmas morning and then Jude woke up. It was Christmas morning and Elf was so excited about Christmas morning and when Jude went to go downstairs to look at the Christmas presents, he was very happy with the tools to make a cozy stuffed Rudolph with his new tools, and he was so happy with the cozy, stuffed Rudolph.

Once there was a baby snow owl; it was cold and alone. Its parents were not coming back. They went to get food but it has been two days.

The baby snow owl started getting worried. Since it could fly, it flew off to find them. Then it saw a shadow. He thought it was his mom and dad. But it heard a different sound. It sounded like “ho ho ho.”

The baby snow owl got scared. It was about to run away but it froze in its place. Then he saw a red suit. He was wearing a hat. Then he was starting to

“Oh no,” said the baby snow owl, who went out to find it. After five days the baby snow owl found the monster and beat it. The baby snow owl felt bad so he tried to tame the monster, and they became friends.

Santa said, “It’s okay.”

One winter day a raccoon was walking in the forest to find his self-food and a storm blew his hat off and a fox saw all of it. After the storm the fox went in the dark half of the forest and he called his friends and he said how it all happened, and then they got to a wall of rocks and they had to go a different way so they did but the snow got deeper and it was just getting too deep, so he went to Santa’s workshop and he asked Santa if he could help.

Santa said yes and they went looking for the hat but no hat could be found, so they asked some other friends to help but all the elf’s were making toys for the kids. They kept looking for the hat and they thought if they went around the block and asked everyone they could ask everybody if they could find it. They all split up and everyone looked and looked for it but still no hat could be found. Then they all saw a glimpse

of a red and white hat and they got closer and closer to the hat but when they got there it was a hedgehog.

Santa asked, “is that your hat?”

“Yes this is my hat. I’m busy so I can’t talk.”

They went away and thought that they should try again tomorrow, so they did.

Early in the morning they found a red and white hat and saw a rabbit wearing it. They asked if it was hers. She said “well, I found it in a dark forest.”

Santa said to the raccoon, “Is that the place you went to?” And the racoon said yes. Santa said, “Is that your hat then?” And the raccoon said “I don’t know.”

Santa said, “why don’t you take a look? “ and then he said, “I think this is your hat.”

Racoon said, “yes, it is my hat.” He gave everyone a hug and said thank you.

One day, Santa wanted a present and he was too busy to get a present. And he had to deliver presents to the kids. So he cannot have a present.

So Santa was sad. Santa went to the store. He asked, “can I have this cat?” And the shop owner said yes. Santa said thank you.

Santa was happy. Then Santa was going, he was sooooooo happy. He got a cat. It was amazing.

Santa went on the sled and went to the North Pole and dropped the cat off, and when he dropped the cat off there was a present. He opened the present. There was a ticket for singing. So the next morning he went to sing. It was amazing.

As you know, on Christmas Eve the elves work extremely hard to finish toys for the good boys and girls. That is what they were doing when they heard a loud CRASH! They all ran outside to see the reindeer running loose.

“What in the name of jingle bells happened,” yelled Santa.

“Someone must have left the door open,” said Holly.

That made everyone look at the person most likely to have left the door open, Elliot. He was the one who fed the reindeers last.

“Okay, it was me, but shouldn’t we be focusing on the fact that we have nine reindeer running loose?” said Elliot quite loudly.

“Guys he’s right, let’s go!” said Holly.

They all started to round up reindeer, they thought they had found nine but as Santa counted them, they only had eight. Holly noticed who was gone, RUDOLPH! “Oh no, Rudolph is gone,” said Holly.

They all started to look for Rudolph.

“He’s not in here,” said April from the candy shop.

“He must have run into the candy cane forest,” yelled Holly.

“The candy cane forest?” said Santa.

“Of course, he loves candy canes,” said Elliot.

But just then they heard hooves coming their way. They all spun around to see Rudolph running toward them. Rudolph jumped onto Holly.

Holly gave him a big hug, then led him into his stable with all of the other reindeer. Santa and the elves ran inside to enjoy cocoa.

But two days before Christmas, the reindeer ran away! Santa Claus is surprised. He says to Gumdrop and Cocoa, “We have to find my reindeer. If we don’t find them, I can’t give presents to all the children.”

Cocoa sees reindeer footprints in the snow and yells. “I’ve got it. We can follow the footprints and find the reindeer!”

Santa responds, “Yes, yes, but I have to stay here to prepare the sleigh.”

So the elves follow the footprints to the nine reindeer who are eating magic grass.

Cocoa tries to move a reindeer, but he doesn’t

move. Gumdrop tries to move a reindeer, but he doesn’t move. They both try to move a reindeer at the same time and he still doesn’t move.

Finally, after three hours, they fall to the ground. Cocoa says, “It’s impossible to move the reindeer!”

After Cocoa says that, Gumdrop thinks for a while and she knows what to do. Gumdrop springs up and dusts herself off. Cocoa does the same.

Gumdrop yells, “I know what to do. We can pick some magic grass and lure the reindeer to the stables.”

Cocoa agrees and so they do just that.

Cocoa and Gumdrop bring all nine reindeer to the stables. The end.

Once upon a time, in a forest made of candy canes and snow, lived magic deer and a magic fairy. The forest was also home to an evil witch named Zoe. Fortunately, there was a hero also, named Skye. Zoe is trying to steal a magic stone that protects the forest. Tom the magic elf is protecting it and Skye is helping him.

Skye woke up on Christmas morning with a weird feeling. “I have a weird feeling,” she said.

Then Tom yelled: “One

of the magic deer lost their magic”’ “Oh no!” said Skye. “How did they lose their magic?”

“I don’t know,” said Tom. “I’m going to go home.”

“Okay”’ said Skye. “Maybe Zoe did it,” she thinks to herself while eating breakfast, hoping this will still be a cheerful Christmas. Then Skye takes a walk in the snow. She hears winter the magic yelling: “The magic stone is gone!”’

“It must be Zoe!” yelled Skye. “I have to find her

now!”

So, she goes looking for Zoe. If Skye doesn’t find the magic stone, Christmas will be ruined!

Then Skye sees Zoe with the stone in the forest. Skye yells “Give me that stone!”

“Never!” yelled Zoe. Then Skye uses her magic and makes her disappear!

The stone falls on the ground with a thud. Skye gives the deer back their magic and saves Candy Forest!

All is well and everyone lives happily ever after.

There once was an elf who was born without a shadow. He was sad because all the other elves had shadows. He was always left out when they placed Shadow Tag. The other elves bullied him because he didn’t have a shadow like them. The elf decides to hide behind a bush while the others are playing Shadow Tag. Then Santa appears behind him.

He says “Do you want to come on my sled for Christmas?”

“YES!” said the elf.

Santa and the elf got the reindeer and sled ready for the big night. The next morning the elf was really excited for this night. They get all the finishing touches on the sled. They even grab some hot chocolate to keep them warm in the sled.

When the time came they jumped in the sled and they went off! The next day the elf was so happy that he got to go with Santa on the sled, then he thought it didn’t matter that he didn’t have a shadow.

It’s that time of year again, Christmas. Up in the North Pole, the elves are celebrating.

Why do you ask? Because they have been waiting to start their work. They love gifting presents to the children of the world even if they have to do it all in one night.

This time, something was off. The conveyor (which was powered by candy) had stopped working, which was strange. Because there was loads of candy in it and even more strange were the presents. They were usually perfectly wrapped but when they came out it looked as if the elves fell asleep.

When the head elf came to scold the elves… they were all asleep! What they didn’t know was that this was the doing of the Christmas

bugs! If you don’t know what a Christmas bug is, they are basically an evil insect that wants to ruin Christmas for everyone.

After the elves realized that they were attacked, they prepared for a battle. They mapped out where to attack, then after that, they got their snowballs. When Santa told them to, they all fired!

The bug nest broke, but nothing came out.

They realized it was a trap! Then the real fight began! Santa’s army was falling quickly.

It seemed as if Santa was about to lose.

Then all the bugs died. No one knew how, until they saw Mrs. Clause. She was holding bug spray! Everyone started cheering for her and that’s how Christmas was saved.

Once a little elf was in a winter wonderland with snow everywhere and elves prancing and dancing all over the place. Up above and through the clouds the elves looked to see overhead the Christmas spirit swishing through the sky.

As the Christmas spirit went over the town, Christmas appeared everywhere. Jingle bells, working elves, decoration, celebration and gingerbread smells, that was some of the Christmas things that were around. The Christmas spirit came every year to spread Christmas and kindness, but only once a year.

It was Christmas Eve. The elves were helping and decorating, adding little details around but then…a snow storm came and all the elves hid. They all felt an earthquake and

it shook the town. The elves checked up on the town and everything was all fine right and in its place. Reeves hung up lights still twinkling and all the elves and everyone went back to what they were doing, baking treats for Santa, last-minute gifts, building snowmen and singing Christmas carols.

On Christmas morning the whole town woke up and celebrated Christmas, opening gifts galore, eating treats and spending time with their families. The town heard something off in the distance and the whole town travelled off. They stopped and looked. A Christmas with kids and gifts, the town was a snowglobe and the kids went to bed feeling Christmas magic.

One Christmas, Santa was delivering presents and then the sleigh came onto the ground. Dasher was very hungry, and he couldn’t fly without eating some carrots first. Then one of the smartest elves, named Jeff, said harshly, “I brought-hey, where did all the carrots I brought for the reindeer go?”

Then he stared at Munchie the elf. “Munchie, what are you doing with the carrots for the reindeer?”

“Oh, sorry, I got hungry,” said Munchie, annoyed.

“Great, now we can’t deliver presents this year,” said Jeff.

“I could just go to the store and buy some carrots if you want?’ Santa said, already getting out of the sleigh.

“Fine,”’ said Jeff while glaring at Munchie.

“Okay I guess it’s okay with me” said Munchie, glaring back at Jeff.

Santa took off into the night to go to SaveOn-Foods with a ten-dollar bill and hoped to save Christmas. Santa went up to the cashier, Katie, and said “Hello, I need carrots for my reindeer,” said Santa.

“Ha ha,”’ said Katie.

“What’s so funny?” asked Santa.

“You’re Santa? Ha, good luck getting those carrots,” she said while mocking him. “Okay, Santa Claus,” she added sarcastically.

Santa was hurt because no one believed that he was real, but he had to go buy his carrots. After he got his carrots, he went back to the sleigh and gave them to Dasher and they continued delivering presents, but the elves would NOT stop fighting!

My name is Percy Harllow.

I am eight years old. It was three days after Christmas when it happened.

I was laying in my bed wide awake when I heard a window smash. I jumped out of my bed and ran to my parents’ room. When I opened the door I saw seven elves keeping them asleep by playing calming music.

“Get’em,” bellowed an elf with an accent.

I ran for it. I was heading downstairs when I saw him.

Santa was standing by my

“It should be here somewhere, ” mumbled Santa. He looked back when he heard me running down the stairs.

“My elves were supposed to take care of you.”

“As in kill me?” I exclaimed.

“No! Just keep you asleep,” explained Santa. “Since you’re awake and have seen so much already. I’ve come here because I accidentally gave you something you weren’t supposed to get.”

“And what is that?” I questioned.

“It’s classified,” said Santa, sighing while he said it.

I looked around the room.

There were more than a dozen elves looking around corners, looking up the chimney and under objects.

“Maybe if you tell me, I can help find it. After all it is my house,” I suggested.

“That may be true, but I can’t let you get in my way,” he grumbled.

“Wake up sleepy head,” I heard, while I felt my mom shaking me awake. Was that all a dream?

During the Christmas season, more than ever, our thoughts turn gratefully to those who have made our progress possible.

And in this spirit we say, simply but sincerely, thank you and

Once upon a time Everett and Henry were quadding in the mountains. Everett saw a trail of candy canes.

“Let’s follow the path,” said Everett.

“Okay,” said Henry.

The two friends followed the candy cane trail. It led them to a portal and it seemed like the candy canes came out of the portal.

“Let’s see what’s on the other side,” said Everett.

“Yeah,” said Henry.

They walked into the portal. It led them straight to Santa’s workshop, where there was a lot of commotion. They asked an elf what was going on.

“Santa’s missing,” said the elf, “Can you go try and find him?”

“Ok,” said Everett and Henry.

“Did I hear you are going to find Santa?” asked Rudolph.

“Yep,” they said.

“You could take the sleigh.” Rudolph said.

They ran to the sleigh and jumped in.

Rudolph called all the reindeer to help pull the sleigh. Once all the reindeer were ready they took off.

They searched everywhere for Santa. They finally found him on a remote island near Hawaii. Santa was sitting on a chair drinking Hawaiian Punch.

“Why are you here?” they asked.

“There is so much work to do and I need a vacation,” said Santa.

“We can help you,” they said.

In the blink of an eye they teleported back to the North Pole. Once they got there they helped set up the Christmas presents, then Santa took them back home in his sleigh.

The next day there were extra big Christmas presents.

He loved Christmas so much!

On Christmas Eve he realized he could get so many presents if he did one thing… trap Santa! So he got to work.

He got his rope, his scissors and other materials. He put the rope on the floor and got another rope so if Santa stepped on it, it would make the scissors cut another rope and trap him, and that would wake James up.

Then James got the bait

He set the plate up right in the middle of the trap and it was ready.

“That should work,” James said, in his head. “I’ve just got to move this over- ahhh,” yelled James as he got himself stuck in the trap.

James had a problem. His parents weren’t home; they were out at a Christmas party that James didn’t want to go to, so he was alone! He was getting hungry and he could barely reach the cook-

ies with the tips of his fingers. He ate them and was also getting thirsty, so he reached out for the milk and started drinking it.

James remembered that he needed to save his drink so he could survive the night as it started getting late. He started dozing off until he heard “HO, HO, HO!” He said, “Santa?”

Santa said, “Oh my little boy what happened?”

“Well, I got stuck trying to trap you.”

Grade six Henderson Elementary School Rebecca was sitting on the couch, writing her story about Christmas. She loved Christmas and the snowy weather outside.

Her sister, Skye, was sighing and said, “I’m so bored. Do you want to play outside?”

Rebecca rolled her eyes but dropped her device and agreed. The girls invited Norah, Carolyn and Laura. They put on their winter coats, boots and hats.

“Help, help!!” Ms. Westyn remarked. Charlie, her son, was running behind.

“Ms. Westyn, what’s wrong?” Skye blurted out fast.

“The Christmas cookies are gone! I make them every year,” Ms. Westyn groaned.

The girls did not need to hear anything more; they ran to the shop. Lois was running around the shop howling, “Where is everything?”

“We can help. We saw Ms. Westyn, and she was looking for some cookies that she makes every year?” Nora told Lois.

They began looking through cupboards, shelves and tables. Lois came in and questioned, “Did you find the culprit?”

The girls shook their heads and sighed. Ms. Westyn wanted to help the girls make a trap.

They had a bunch of ideas of making traps to find the person or animal. It took them time to make it, but with teamwork they got it to work.

They went to the shop to set up the trap. After they set up the trap, they had a little snack of cookies and milk.

“CRASH!” a noise came from the kitchen. Everyone ran to the kitchen, they found the culprit. It was a dog. The end.

Santa was eating very warm cookies, then he realized his hat was not on the table next to him and he wondered where his hat went. Then he complained to Misses Clause, “Where’s my hat?” he yelled at Misses Clause.

Then Santa saw a little kid stealing his hat, then he screamed with anger at the child.

The child screamed back and ran away. Santa ran after him while his tummy was still growling. They ran into the forbidden forest without knowing it but when people go in, they never come out.

After time, Santa realized where they ran.

“No, we’re in the forbidden forest,” Santa screeched with horror. The child sighed.

Santa looked at him with anger and said,

“Listen to me, give me my hat so we can get out of here. If you don’t give me my hat back, bad things will happen!”

The child responded with this, “Fine, here’s your dumb hat.”

Then Santa responded with, “Ugh.” Santa got back his magic hat and used it to call his reindeer. It didn’t work so Santa said, “We must take the short cut.”

Then they walked into the dark until they saw light, but then they saw Gerald the Elf that disappeared two years earlier, but no one knew where he went until now.

Gerald started running then jumped into the bush. “That was weird,” said Santa.

Then Santa took the kid back home on his magical sleigh.

’Twas a peaceful night on Christmas Eve and all the children were sound asleep.

Santa was passing through Powell River when he heard a strange noise coming from the back of the sleigh; it was always making strange noises. In a little while the noise came back, but even louder. Santa started to get concerned.

“What’s making that darn sound?” he thought, as he turned and saw toys almost falling off the sleigh. He climbed into the back of the sleigh and tried to catch the presents, but it was too late. Now the sleigh was out of control and began to drop right into City Hall.

“Ahhhhhhhhh!” Santa screeched. He was going to crash!

He remembered his parachute and opened the glove box to get it. He flung it on and jumped out of the sleigh as fast as he could. He watched as his beautiful sleigh crashed right into the centre of City Hall.

He glided down near Michigan Avenue. He ran to where his sleigh laid, shattered into a million pieces. Santa looked at his watch and just about fainted, it was 5:30 am.

“How am I supposed to deliver presents to all of Powell River in 30 minutes?” he wondered.

Santa tried to call information for help. The guy on the phone suggested that Santa could ring up the Zunga Bus. They said that they would help and came and picked Santa up and drove him all around town without any questions at all.

Frost overcame the outside corners of the windows as a fire roared from inside the Shard’s house. Chestnuts roasted on a red and orange-flamed fire as kids giggled at jokes from their father.

Outside snow fell peacefully onto the seemingly white-painted grass. The Christmas tree lights flashed as the cat purred under them; the dog sniffing around annoying the cat like siblings would. A hiss sounded from the cat as it bounded towards Nova Shard curling into her lap and growling at the dog.

“Time for bed!” Mother sounded from the kitchen.

Milo and Nova sprinted up the stairs giggling to themselves. Boosted with Christmas spirit they leaped into their beds, covering themselves with the thick warm blankets.

Slow heavy footsteps could be heard coming up the stairs as mother and father peered into the room and wished them goodnight.

The kids slowly drifted to sleep before they could hear the stomping on the roof, and the sleigh bells. Santa placed the presents down by the white tree with golden lights. Five presents for Nova and five presents for Milo.

Once upon a time, a lady brought her 16-year-old daughter to see Dr. Harold McBray.

“Alright, Mrs. Dallin, what’s the problemo?” the doctor asked.

Mrs. Dallin huffed, “It’s my daughter, Tilly. She’s exhausted all the time. She’s moody and she’s suddenly developed a violent hatred of pickles.

Dr. McBray raised an eyebrow, “A hatred of pickles?”

“Violent,” Mrs. Dallin repeated. “She threw a jar at the wall yesterday. A perfectly good jar. How can I serve Christmas dinner without pickles?”

The doctor examined Tilly. He checked her temperature twice, tapped her knees with his little hammer, and even made her say, “ahh” three different ways. Finally, he turned to the mother.

“Well...I’m not sure how to put this gently, but Tilly appears to have a rare condition known as Dramatic Hormonal Adolescent

Overload. Pretty serious case.”

Mrs. Dallin gasped. “But, but she’s always so well behaved!

Aren’t you, Tilly?”

Tilly shrugged. “Mostly. Except when Jacob Barnes said my shoes looked like grandma sneakers. I might’ve thrown a pencil.”

Dr. McBray walked over to the window and stared outside, completely silent.

After several long minutes, Mrs. Dallin finally asked, “Doctor... what are you looking at?”

Dr. McBray sighed. “Just keeping an eye out. The last time I diagnosed a teenager with this level of mood swings, the sky turned green and the school called an emergency meeting. If the clouds start forming dramatic shapes, I want to witness it firsthand.”

Willow answered, “I don’t care how cold it is. I want to meet Santa.”

So her mom and dad said, “Okay, but make sure you pack all the stuff you need.”

That night, Willow packed up all her stuff in her backpack and went to sleep. The next morning, she grabbed her backpack and was about to go down stairs, when she noticed the smell of her mom’s famous pancakes drifting through the air

“Mom,” she said as she walked down stairs, “I need to go!”

Mom replied, “At least, eat your breakfast first.”

So she grabbed a plate of pancakes to eat on the way, not knowing the danger waiting for her ahead.

When she started walking through the dark forest, she saw a little cabin up ahead. She wondered if there were people living there. She walked up to the cabin, when she suddenly heard what sounded like glass breaking. She decided then that she wouldn’t continue her journey. She went back home and ate the wonderful pancakes that were still warm.

Tree mulch fundraiser set to return Funds support equipment for Special Olympics programs, facility rentals and travel for athletes TANYA HILL thill@prpeak.com

Special Olympics BC-Powell River is holding its annual Christmas tree mulch fundraiser on January 4, between 10 am and 1 pm, in the parking lot below Mother Nature, located at 7050 Duncan Street.

Tree tags will be available until January 3, and can be purchased for a suggested donation of $5 at Mother Nature.

"People can drop off their trees that day [January 4] or, if they purchase tree tags ahead of time, they can place their trees visible on the curbside by 8 am for pickup by CUPE 798," said local Special Olympics coordinator Jackie Milsom. "This is one of the major fundraisers of the year and has been an annual event for almost 20 years."

Special Olympics BC-Powell River has offered sport programs for 34 years and currently provides programs to approximately 50 athletes ranging in age from 10 to 80 years old.

"The funds raised are mainly used to purchase equipment for programs, facility rentals and travel," explained Milsom. "Our goal is to limit the cost to the athletes."

The programs run year-round in qathet and consist of aquatics, bowling, bocce, curling and golf. There are also athletes playing with a composite floor hockey team on Vancouver Island.

Milsom said softball will be offered next year.

"There were a few athletes who expressed interest in softball, so we have been able to secure some coaches and volunteers to offer the program next year in the spring," she added. "Each year we have athletes competing at qualifying competitions and this year we had two aquatics athletes qualify to compete at the [Special Olympics Canada Summer Games] in Medicine Hat in 2026."

Special Olympics programs offer many benefits to athletes, including improved physical ability and fitness level, increased social opportunities and self-confidence, and they promote belonging, connectedness and inclusivity, said Milsom.

"Our goal is to continue to provide these life-enriching programs for our athletes," she added.

The public market quickly became a community hub back in 2018 when it opened and became home to many of qathet's independent clothing and artisan shops, a rock climbing facility, art galleries, a coffee shop, bakery and grocery store.

However, in the few years since COVID-19, the market has contracted, with some businesses closing and some migrating to Marine Avenue.

But the ebb is starting to flow again, with new businesses opening, such as an outdoor clothing/gear store, a new eatery and a vegan chocolatier. The Saturday craft market is also still a draw for many community members and vendors.

Outdoor Recreation Council of BC (ORCBC) is accepting applications for the 2026 Outdoor Recreation Fund of BC. According to an ORCBC media release, eligible groups across the province can apply for funding for trail and outdoor infrastructure upgrades, stewardship and education initiatives, and inclusive programming.

This will be the third intake for the grant program.

Last year, Powell River Educational Services Society received $10,000 in funding to remediate and make critical repairs to three portage trails, totalling a distance of four kilometres. The trails connect lakes along a primary trail corridor on the qathet Canoe Route.

According to the release, to date, the grant program has funded outdoor recreation projects in 61 communities, resulting in volunteers building 264 kilometres of trail, cleaning up 20,000 square metres of land and water, and educating more than

100,000 British Columbians.

"The Outdoor Recreation Fund has already supported an incredible mix of projects, from Indigenous-led stewardship and youth programs to new trail signage and community climbing access," stated Tomke Augustin, grant program manager for ORCBC. "Each intake shows just how creative communities can be when they have a bit of support."

With a $10 million endowment from the province of British Columbia, the fund provides grants to nonprofits, charities, local governments and Indigenous governments for projects that enhance trails, campsites, paddling access and stewardship activities in communities across the province.

"No group should hesitate to apply if they have a ready-to-go project that will help people get outside, care for local places or make participation more inclusive," stated Augustin.

The application window is open until January 20, 2026. More details about eligibility, guidelines and deadlines are available at orcbc.ca/grants-for-outdoor-recreation.

Jervis Inlet and Agamemnon Channel Power Line Replacement Project As part of an emergent capital project, we’re replacing the 138 kilovolt (kV) power line crossings and aviation marker balls over Jervis Inlet and Agamemnon Channel. This work will improve safety for marine and air traffic and help ensure reliable electricity for customers in Powell River and surrounding communities.

We successfully removed the 138 kV power line over Jervis Inlet on October 2025. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this part of the project.

Work will continue in spring 2026, when we’ll remove and replace the line across Agamemnon Channel, upgrading it to 230 kV standards. The Jervis Inlet crossing will be reinstalled in fall 2026 or spring 2027 and will also be upgraded to 230 kV standards.

Council seeks operational cuts City finance department staff comes up with potential tax savings PAUL GALINSKI reporter@prpeak.com

City of Powell River Council has been presented with a list of potential operational savings to help reduce city taxation in the 2026 budget.

At the December 3 special council meeting called to review the 2026 to 2030 five-year financial plan, contained in the documentation was a staff report on potential cuts that could save 4.91 per cent in city taxation.

For the 2026 budgeting year, there were five potential operational savings listed. These included: reviewing transit fares; eliminating further transit expansion; a review of planning, development and building fees; a reduction in percentage for permissive tax exemption fees from 93 to 90 per cent; and eliminating the inflation provision for 2026.

Suggested savings for operations originating in 2025 included: decreasing Powell River Public Library operating hours; decreasing transit service hours; eliminating the aquatic centre; eliminating general grantsin-aid; eliminating general grants-in-kind; eliminating cultural services, including grants-in-kind to qathet Art Council, qathet Museum

and Archives, PRISMA, plus grants-in-aid to qathet Academy of Music and Arts, qathet Art Council, PRISMA and qathet Tourism Society; and reducing street lighting.

Ken Bjorgaard, the city’s interim chief financial officer, said the review of the transit fares will be happening. He said regarding the elimination of further transit expansion, council has asked for that to be inserted into the financial plan.

The other one, he said, was the review of planning, development and building fees.

“We believe there is an opportunity to look at those fees and to provide some savings if we were to increase that area,” said Bjorgaard. “We would like to conduct a thorough review

of those fees.”

Bjorgaard said another area was reduction of permissive tax exemptions, which only has a small impact, plus the elimination of inflation, which would create savings of about $80,000 in the general operating fund.

Councillor George Doubt, who was chairing the special council meeting, said all the suggestions could be brought up at the draft two stage of the five-year financial plan.

“There’s plenty of time for people to look at them and for us to hear from the public about what they think, and bring back a motion at draft two,” said Doubt.

Bjorgaard said it could be considered in the second draft.

Draft one of qathet Regional District’s 2026 to 2030 financial plan stipulates a 3.7 per cent increase in overall tax requisition.

At the December 9 finance committee meeting, Electoral Area E director and finance committee chair Andrew Fall said the first draft provides an initial picture of expectations regarding planned projects, cost changes and revenue.

“Given that the 2025 year isn’t yet finished, the actual revenues and expenditures are incomplete for 2025, so they should be viewed as provisional,” said Fall. “I expect some of the line items are difficult to estimate.” qRD general manager of financial administration Linda Greenan then outlined the draft, providing directors a snapshot of the comprehensive budget document.

She said the 2026 budget highlights include the local government election in 2026, the Lund water system conversion, completion of the Savary Island official community plan, plus improvements in regional parks, including replacement of the Shelter Point Park on-site footbridge, replacement of the washroom and concession roof at Palm Beach Regional Park, the Craig Park cookhouse gazebo supports renovation, and

the Klah Ah Men Gazebo Park siding repairs in Lund.

There will also be new columbaria at Powell River Regional Cemetery.

In terms of waste management, Greenan said there are a number of initiatives in the service. These include: interchange oil and household hazardous waste recycling; a building supply reuse centre; a new Lund recycling depot; replacement of the Lasqueti Island free store roof; fire suppression system improvements at the resource recovery centre; and renewal of the 10-year solid waste management plans.

There will be replacement of a recirculating pump impeller at Myrtle Pond water system and putting in a new well, and at Lund, replacement of sewer pumps.

Greenan said in general administration, there have been some additions to the workload, including the new community works fund committee and an increased number of qathet Regional Hospital District meetings.

In rural paratransit, there will be expansion of the Texada Island route, planned expansion of the Stillwater route, and planned expansion of the Lund route in 2027.

For Northside Recreation in Lund, the community hall addition is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Greenan expressed concerns about reserve levels not being sustainable in the Myrtle Pond Water System and Lund sewer system.

“More funds will be required for major repairs and capital upgrades,” said Greenan. “We will be coming to the regional board in January or February with some potential changes to

the user fees, and potentially, the parcel taxes.”

Greenan added that the fire services reserves are not sustainable for maintaining all the regional district’s capital replacement plans.

“Without increases, there will be debt financing or community works funds required for asset replacements,” said Greenan.

As far as the tax rates go, Greenan said these are based on the 2025 revised roll values from BC Assessment.

She said the 2026 completed roll values will not be available until the end of December, so that will be incorporated into draft two of the budget.

Greenan said the regional district, in the first draft of the financial plan, was looking at tax rates of $93.20 per $100,000 of assessed value for City of Powell River properties, and at the high end, $340.36 for Electoral Area A taxpayers.

Electoral Area B taxpayers are facing a tax rate per $100,000 of $227.30,

Area C taxpayers are facing $219.05, Area D taxpayers are facing $210.76, and Area E taxpayers are facing $262.17. In terms of percentage change, the city requisition is dropping 1.89 per cent. The requisition in all rural areas is increasing. The Area A requisition is 5.28 per cent, Area B is 6.8 per cent, Area C is 6.85 per cent, Area D is 4.29 per cent and Area E is 7.82 per cent.

The 2026 requisition for the city and all electoral areas is $13,810,569, which is up $485,062, or 3.64 per cent.

The cost of qRD taxes to the average taxpayer in the city is $545.27, which is a change of $3.55 from 2025.

The cost per average home in Area A is $1,762.70, in Area B it is $1,446.22, in Area C it is $1,609.37, in Area D it is $941.65 and in Area E, it is $1,565.66.

The finance committee unanimously carried a motion that it accept draft one, and as guiding information, the proposed 2026 to 2030 financial plan.

Professional Fire Fighters’ Association Burn Fund, which finances burn survivor support programs, including patient care items, staff training and a burn camp for young burn survivors, according to event organizer and union president Brad Collicutt.

Local members of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF Local 1298) donate off-duty time and skills attending fundraisers, such as Light Up the Park, to support this charity.

This year the Putters team is offering glow-in-the-dark golf for one night only, on Saturday, December 20.

Fire rescue members said this event brings families and friends together to celebrate the season with hot chocolate, music and plenty of holiday cheer.

“Kids can visit the fire truck, meet firefighters and take in the glow of the lights, all while supporting our charity,” said Collicutt.

Putters Mini-Golf is located at 4800 Marine Avenue.

Shirley Koleszar With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our muchloved mother, Shirley June Koleszar, on December 9, 2025.

Shirley was an exceptional person in many ways.

She lived her life with energy and compassion, with kindness and grace.

Shirley was intelligent, loyal and loved a good laugh and a good adventure. She touched many people over the decades, either in the classroom, through one of her volunteer activities, on the golf course or on the hiking trails.

Shirley got off the steamship in Powell River in 1949 to begin her teaching career. She was 19 years old. That was the beginning of a 40-year journey in education. Her dedication to and love of teaching showed in every classroom and beyond. All this led to her receiving the Canadian Governor General’s Award for excellence in teaching in 1984.

Shirley retired in 1990. She and her husband Jim then travelled the world enjoying many out of the way places, particularly in northern Canada in their much-loved camper. Jim passed away in 2005.

After Jim died, Shirley picked up travelling again with her BFF Mary Henry and others. When they weren’t travelling they were on the golf course. Shirley played for years and was involved in many club events. She played her last game when she was 92.

Shirley also lent her time and expertise to the Academy of Music, particularly to the choral festival Kathaumixw. At many festivals she happily organized the tours and met with choirs from around the world.

Shirley was also an integral and valued member of the hospital foundation and was instrumental in our community receiving its first CT scan machine in 2009.

Most recently, as part of a Telus initiative, Shirley coordinated a group of knitters who knit breast prostheses for breast cancer patients. For this she was featured on the Knowledge Network in 2012 as one of its inspirational community partners.

Shirley June Hibberd was born in Vancouver on October 18, 1929, and grew up in Point Grey. She met Jim Koleszar in Powell River in 1950 and married in 1952. They had two children, daughter Karen Whyard (Bill) and son Thomas Koleszar (Ulrike). They had five grandsons Patrick (Anna) Whyard, Michael (Krista) Whyard, Thomas Whyard, David Koleszar and Mark Koleszar. She also had four great-grandchildren, Loren-Gray, Una, Wayne and Willa Whyard.

Shirley was predeceased by her two brothers Richard Hibberd and Dr. Jack Hibberd, and is survived by their children Rick, Wendy, Skye and Darcy. She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law Joe Koleszar.

Shirley is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Les and Dorothy Koleszar and their children Lee, Donna and Steve, and by her sister-in-law Hellen Oullette and her children Robert, Victoria, Julie and Michael.

Shirley spent her last years living in Kiwanis, qathet General Hospital and Evergreen Extended Care. The family is immensely grateful for the care she received in all three facilities. ECU staff, particularly in her last months, offered her respect, kindness, some laughs and much love. Thank you doesn’t nearly say enough, but thank you so very much.

A celebration of life will be held for Shirley at qathet Academy of Music on Saturday, January 24, 2026, from 1 to 3 pm. If donations wish to be offered, Shirley would choose the hospital foundation or qathet Academy of Music.

Garnet “Bubbi” Blair Marshall April 8, 1947 December 7, 2025

Garnet “Bubbi” Blair Marshall passed away peacefully at 8 am on December 7, 2025, at the age of 78. Born in Killarney, Manitoba, on April 8, 1947, Bubbi was predeceased by his parents Olive and James Marshall. He spent much of his life on the west coast, especially Texada Island, a place he loved deeply and often called home.

Bubbi was a gentle and creative soul whose lifelong passions included cooking, music, art, sports, fishing and the ocean. He played both acoustic guitar and drums, and expressed his artistic spirit through painting, drawing and carving. His handcrafted walking canes became a signature of his creativity—each one shaped with patience, skill and pride. He often said saltwater ran in his blood and felt most at peace near the sea.

Over the years, Bubbi lived and worked in many beautiful communities across British Columbia, including the Lower Mainland, Mackenzie, Spring Island, Port Hardy, Pruth Bay on Calvert Island and Texada Island. His working life was as diverse as the coastlines he loved: he trained and worked as an electrician, laboured in the Mackenzie sawmill and Raspberry logging camp, cooked and crewed as a deckhand on the Ivanhoe tug, served as a labourer and boatman for the Department of Transportation on Spring Island, worked as an auto-parts manager in Port Hardy, and later operated a fishing resort on Calvert Island. He was known as a jack of all trades and took pride in helping family and friends with any project.

In his younger years, Bubbi found joy in sports and community.

He played, coached and refereed baseball and hockey, and also enjoyed curling and bowling. He volunteered generously and was an active member of the Kinsmen and Lions clubs, and a strong supporter of blue-collar workers. A lifelong animal lover, he had a special way with pets and was affectionately known as a dog whisperer.

Bubbi will be dearly missed by his children Scott Marshall and Jandi Marshall; his daughter-in-law Tara Marshall; his grandchildren Carley, Taylor and Issac; his brothers Larry (Helen) and Terry (Dianne); and his sisters Darlana (Loren) Guillou, Melody (Doug) Ker and Tanya (Hart) Lowen. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, greatnephews, many relatives and countless friends whose lives he touched. His gentle heart, creativity, love for the coast and passion to appreciate every day will live on in the memories of all who knew him.

Patricia (Pat) Jane Good It is with sad hearts we announce the passing of Patricia (Pat) Jane Good on November 30, 2025.

Pat was born and raised in Vancouver.

After high school, she worked at Eaton’s for 12 years. In 1976, she attended Langara College, then onto SFU, where she graduated with a degree in kinesiology with a minor in psychology. Pat worked in various positions at SFU and UBC until she moved to Texada Island in 1991.

Pat started working for SD47 in 1997. She served as a secretary, dispatch clerk, educational assistant and office manager. The last 20 years of her career were spent at Henderson Elementary School, where she was appreciated by students and staff.

Pat was especially proud of co-founding the reading dog program with Deb Richardson in 2003 and later introducing therapy dogs into the schools. Her dog, Tessa, spent six years bringing calm and comfort to student staff and visitors alike at Henderson.

Pat’s longtime passions included time with her many dogs, working in her garden and enjoying nature and the beauty around Powell River.
