In working with the contractor, it was determined quickly that some of the wish list items were quickly removed, and the scope was consolidated down to what it is now, based on cost estimates and environmental and archeological requirements.”

Cronin said that a decision was made to split the project into two phases. He said it was believed that tackling the entire sea walk at once was going to be cost-prohibitive based on the available funding.

The initial archeological review that was completed in 2023 assumed all the restoration work was going to happen from the top of the pathway and that no machines would be required to enter the intertidal zone, said Cronin. He said that as planning proceeded, it was determined that would not be feasible, and therefore, some additional archeological reviews were required, to ensure that the restoration crews would not be encroaching on any features on the foreshore. The archeological survey took place this past spring.

The route is scheduled to begin in North Vancouver on September 11. Cyclists will work their way up the lower Sunshine Coast before arriving at Saltery Bay on the northern Sunshine Coast on September 13. From there, the team will ride to Lund and back, making multiple community stops in the qathet region to connect with supporters and raise awareness.

Taking on the steep hills and winding roads of the coastal highway requires rigorous preparation.

“I ride to and from work most days,” said Hanson, detailing the physical commitment required before the official launch. “We are trying to log as many rides as we can; I think [I’m at] 65 rides since the day I signed up.”

Hanson added that his in-

dividual training rides vary significantly, spanning anywhere from 15 to 130 kilometres to build the endurance needed for the multiday tour.

When the riders arrive in town, the team hopes to introduce a new element to boost local engagement, though plans are still being finalized.

“Phil, Carrie and I were like, ‘what can we do to reinvigorate that kind of energy?’ So we have teamed up with or conversed with the classic car group,” explained Hanson.

“Our goal is to set it up so we can do a classic car and Cops for Cancer ride.”

The team hopes to generate community excitement by partnering with members of the Powell River Chapter of the Vintage Car Club of Canada for a procession around the city.

“It will be our opportunity to engage with the community a bit and have something they can all take in,” added Hanson.

While nothing is set in stone, the tentative plan is to gather around 3 pm at the church at Manson and Joyce avenues. The joint procession would then loop through Cranberry and Townsite,

move along Marine Avenue and travel back down Joyce Avenue to culminate at the Town Centre Hotel, where the tour participants are staying for the night.

For Hanson, the fight against cancer is a personal mission and a professional reality. Like many people, he has seen friends and relatives battle the disease.

However, as a city firefighter, developing occupational cancer represents a stark daily risk for he and his colleagues.

“My mom’s cousin was actually a North Vancouver firefighter, and he died of occupational cancer,” said Hanson. “He was one of the first people who brought awareness to the amount of cancers that affect first responders, firefighters specifically.”

That loss helped spark industry-wide changes to better protect personnel from toxic exposures on the job.

“My industry has something like a 90 per cent chance that when a firefighter retires, they will end up with an occupational cancer,” said Hanson. “There are big pushes in regard to postincident decontamination and switching to PFAS-free firefighting gear.”

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called forever chemicals, are used in traditional firefighting gear and foam. Some government agencies, including those in the United States, have deemed them carcinogenic due to links to cancer and widespread contamination in water and food supplies.

“In Vancouver, they’ve switched gear, which can be quite a large expense for a smaller community, but in the big city, they’ve switched to PFAS-free firefighting gear,” explained Hanson.

“Some departments have transitioned to 24-hour shift systems to help minimize sleep disruption and mitigate health risks from traditional shift work.”

Hanson said he has nineyear-old twin boys and can’t fathom them going through life with any kind of cancer right now.

“It never really hits till it’s close to home, right?” said Hanson. “It’s eye-opening.”

The community has already responded generously to the team’s cause. Team Powell River has raised $8,992.01 so far.

On its fundraising page, the team shared a message: “One child with cancer is one child too many. Nothing big gets solved by one person or one organization. To take on cancer, it takes every one of us. It takes a society.”

More than 200 people attended a ferry town hall meeting in Evergreen Theatre at Powell River Recreation Complex on Friday, August 8.

North Island-Powell River MP Aaron Gunn hosted the meeting, with guests Harman Bhangu and Dan Albas. Bhangu represents Langley-Abbotsford as MLA and serves as the Conservative Party of BC’s

shadow minister for transportation. Albas, the MP for Okanagan Lake West-South Kelowna, was first elected to the House of Commons in 2011.

A media release from Gunn's constituency office stated that BC Ferries has faced criticism recently for a number of corporate policy decisions, including changes to its reservation system and the resulting impact on local residents, the decision to purchase the next generation of BC Ferries vessels from a state-owned shipyard in China instead of building them in British Columbia, and the use of reciprocal labour agreements to hire non-Canadian workers at the same time youth unemployment in Canada continues to rise.

Gunn also spoke out against the unequal federal

funding that ferry services in BC receive compared to those on Canada’s east coast, which draw significantly more funding per ferry trip than those in this province.

“For communities like Powell River, ferry service that residents can count on is not an optional add-on or a ‘nice to have,’” stated Gunn. “This is an essential government service that individuals and families rely on for work, medical appointments and living their lives.

I am dismayed by the lack of consultations by BC Ferries regarding recent operational decisions, in addition to their choice to build the next generation of ferries in stateowned Chinese shipyards instead of right here in BC.” Bhangu stated that he wants BC Ferries executives and NDP politicians in Victoria to listen to users of

Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Mill and Bayview Fibre chipping facility are indefinitely closed, affecting approximately 400 employees.

Unifor western regional director Gavin McGarrigle says the truly devastating part of the announcement for workers regarding the “indefinite idle” of the Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Mill in Port Mellon, is that it’s “absolutely nothing that any of them did.”

“They get up, they go to work every day. They try to feed their families, take care of their kids, take care of their community,” McGarrigle told Coast Reporter during an interview August 20. “And then, for whatever reason, whether it's world pulp prices, the state of the market, the tariffs, the absence of any strategy to have an industrial strategy for forestry, all of these things add up. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter to the workers because they're the ones getting the pink slip. And that's what we want to keep the focus on is the real people and families who are connected.”

McGarrigle said staff were told during a town hall meeting held, Aug. 20. He confirmed most of the almost 400 employees are Unifor members and the date of the mill’s indefinite closure will

be the middle of October.

“I spoke to the forestry minister yesterday and we've been working with the government and the company for a number of weeks. But the official announcement came today. We just heard about it late yesterday,” said McGarrigle. “And, you know, we've been warning about this for years. We've been warning that all these pressures from whatever source are going to end up in one thing, which is workers getting laid off, factories getting closed, and communities getting devastated. So, we've been ringing that alarm bell for years now.”

In a news release Thursday afternoon, Luc Thériault, president of Canadian operations and CEO of pulp and wood products at parent company Domtar, said the business decision to “indefinitely idle” the Howe Sound Mill is the result of careful consideration and “is not a reflection on the employees.”

employees, as well as to the community organizations and activities supported by those who work there,” the release continued.

“The mill supports many businesses in our town, and its presence is woven into everyday life across the coast.

Its employees are our friends and neighbours, coaches, volunteers and community members. We recognize that this transition will be difficult, and we will be thinking about how we can support our local economy and community through this time.”

According to a media release from Unifor, the curtailment of operations at the mill is more evidence of a “deepening forestry sector crisis and demands immediate action from the BC and federal government.”

"Collapse of the forestry industry in the west, a core pillar of the economy, is just around the corner if governments don't act now," stated Unifor national president Lana Payne in the release.

Forests, responded to the announcement in a news release.

"This is an immensely difficult day for the Sunshine Coast,” stated Parmar. “These are not just jobs, these are livelihoods that have supported families and communities for generations.

Our hearts go out to every worker, every family and every business on the Sunshine Coast that will feel the effects of this decision.”

Parmar added that the ministry had been engaging with the company to better understand the full scope of the challenges it’s facing and was prepared to work through the cross-government working group to identify practical, long-term solutions.

“This work will be most effective with Domtar's continued participation in the process and a shared focus on maintaining a strong presence in British Columbia,” the release continued.

"British Columbia's pulp sector is feeling the effects of a seismic shift in the global

pulp market. We are currently approaching the lowest pulp prices in 100 years, when adjusted for inflation.”

Parmar said BC's northern bleached softwood kraft pulp is being outcompeted by low-cost hardwood eucalyptus pulp, which is found primarily in the southern hemisphere. Hardwood pulp technology continues to advance, pushing down the price of pulp and reducing opportunities for softwood pulp.

“It's clear there is a need to increase the work to pivot the sector in our province to ensure its continued success and maintain these goodpaying jobs in BC,” he stated.

“Understanding the cause does not lessen our responsibility to act. We will be reaching out to the Sunshine Coast community immediately, working with local leaders, labour representatives and workers to ensure people get the support they need, including income and mental-health supports, as they navigate this transition."

Firefighters receive awards Seven Powell River Fire Rescue members recognized for long service

Seven Powell River Fire Rescue firefighters were honoured at the August 19 City of Powell River committee of the whole meeting for longtime service.

Committee of the whole chair and councillor Trina Isakson announced and presented the awards to the firefighters.

First was captain Brad Collicutt, who began his fire service career with the Malaspina Volunteer Fire Department in August 2000, and joined Powell River Fire Rescue as a career firefighter in March 2007. Collicutt moved to Powell River with his family in 1983 and graduated from Max Cameron Secondary School in 1996. He has dedicated more than 25 years to the fire service and the community he calls home and is the current president of International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1281 Firefighters Association.

Sid Allman was recognized for 20 years of service. He joined Powell River Fire Rescue as an auxiliary firefighter in December 2005 and became a career fire-

fighter in May 2009. Raised in Powell River from the age of three, Sid graduated from Brooks Secondary School in 2005. He takes great pride in serving the community where he grew up and continues to call home.

Jesse Hildering received his 10-year fire service award. He moved to Powell River with his family in 1999 and graduated from Brooks Secondary School in 2005. He joined Powell River Fire Rescue as an auxiliary firefighter in March 2014.

Hildering later attended the Justice Institute of British Columbia Fire Academy, graduating as class valedictorian, and became a career firefighter with Powell River Fire Rescue in September

2019.

Chet Rockwell was given his 10-year fire service award. He graduated from Pitt Meadows Secondary School in 1991. He and his wife moved to Powell River in 2008, and Rockwell joined Powell River Fire Rescue as an auxiliary firefighter in January 2015. He became a career firefighter in 2021.

Brent Delgiudice was recognized for 20 years of service.

He grew up in Powell River and served as an auxiliary firefighter with Powell River Fire Rescue for 18 years. Two years ago, he was selected to serve as a temporary flex firefighter, continuing his longstanding service to the department and community.

River Fire Rescue as an auxiliary firefighter in March 2014 and has remained a dedicated auxiliary member ever since. In addition to his service with the department, Milne works part-time with the city and full-time with BC Emergency Health Services. Milne received his 10-year fire service award.

Julian Welp received his 10-year municipal fire service award. He grew up in Powell River and graduated from high school in 1994.

He joined Powell River Fire Rescue in 2011 and contin-

ued serving the department and his community until his retirement in 2026, completing 15 years of service.

Not at the ceremony was Kevin Cote, who has served Powell River Fire Rescue for 20 years. Cote grew up in Powell River and graduated from Brooks Secondary School. He joined Powell River Fire Rescue as an auxiliary firefighter in December 2005 and became a career firefighter in 2008. Kevin and his wife raised their three daughters in Powell River and are now proud

grandparents of three grandchildren. Cote takes great pride in serving the community where he grew up and raised his family.

Tyler Brady, also not at the ceremony, has served as a firefighter for 10 years.

Brady grew up in the Queen Charlotte Islands before moving to Powell River in 2006 and graduating from high school in 2007. He joined Powell River Fire Rescue as an auxiliary firefighter in March 2014 and became a career firefighter in 2020.

Disasters are not random By Deborah Sketchley

While communities battle floods, heat waves and wildfire smoke this summer, oil and gas companies are posting record profits. That is not a coincidence.

It is the business model.

This summer, extreme heat, wildfires and floods have put millions of people in danger. These disasters aren’t some sort of random event. They are all a product of our dependence on the fossil fuel industry.

For decades, oil and gas companies have profited off the destruction of our climate. And our political decision makers have let them.

Now, finally, countries across the world are trailblazing the transition away from fossil fuels. Their leadership isn’t just good news for the climate. It just makes economic sense given that renewable energy is the cheapest source of power on earth.

But where’s Canada in all this?

Prime minister Mark Carney keeps ripping apart

climate policies and expanding fossil fuels. His recent deal to build the west coast pipeline would be a disaster for our climate. Enough. No pipelines on a burning planet.

It’s time to make polluters pay and build a clean energy future.

Rather than taxing this windfall or holding polluters accountable, the federal government is handing the industry billions in public support for new pipeline projects. That is money that could fund health care, wildfire response or a genuine transition to renewable energy.

Canadians should not be asked to subsidize the same industry that is driving the disasters we are living through. We need leaders willing to make polluters pay, not underwrite their expansion.

The time for half-measures is over. We need real action.

Fall byelection likely to take place The first provincial byelection in more than three years will likely be held this fall and depending on its outcome it may signal whether we may be headed to a general election earlier than currently scheduled.

The next provincial vote is currently set for October 2028, but the byelection result in the riding of Abbotsford-Mission may open a spring election window for premier David Eby (or firmly close it).

to potentially gain entry to the legislature.

I’m not sure how many folks had Gasper on their bingo card when it came to MLAs willing to give up their seat for Findlay. After several MLAs turned down her request to give up their seat, it seemed entirely possible that Findlay could find herself shut out of the legislature for quite a long time.

But now Eby must call a byelection within the next six months.

I suspect he will wait a bit before doing so because Gasper’s sudden

resignation effectively increases his government majority in the house because the BC Conservatives will be down one.

The legislature fall session is set to begin October 5th and is scheduled to adjourn November 26th.

I suspect Eby will set an election date that will allow the victor to take his or her seat before it adjourns, likely in that last week. So perhaps he’ll be looking at a vote in late October or early November.

If history is a guide, the odds favor Findlay winning the seat. In this province, a sitting government usually loses more byelections than it wins. Of the more than dozen byelections that have occurred in

this century, the government has won just five of them.

And the NDP has only won once in an Abbotsford riding. That happened in 2020, when the party took advantage of a five-candidate field and won with just 41 per cent of the vote as the combined BC Liberal/BC Conservative vote was more than 46 per cent.

In the 2024 election the NDP lost the seat because it went head-tohead with just one party – the BC Conservatives. Even though it increased its vote from 2020, the party lost by more than 2,600 votes.

However, the upstart CentreBC party is expected to field a candidate. It is positioning itself as a

viable alternative to both the NDP and the BC Conservatives, and any votes its candidate picks up will come more from the Conservatives than the New Democrats.

And if a vote-split can occur once, as it did in 2020, it can certainly happen again.

Even if the NDP does not win the byelection, any evidence that shows CentreBC (and perhaps even OneBC, if it runs a candidate) eating into the BC Conservative vote may tempt Eby to take advantage of that kind of scenario and pull the election trigger in the spring.

Drug use stats outlined

In recognition of the 25th annual International Overdose Awareness Day, City of Powell River councillors were updated on local trends.

At the August 18 committee of the whole meeting, qathet Community Action team representative Jessica Colasanto said that the overdose awareness day will be observed in Powell River with a flag raising at Powell River City Hall on August 31, at 10 am, in honour of the more than 56,000 lives lost, and thousands more impacted, by Canada’s ongoing toxic drug crisis.

Dr. Moliehi Khaketla, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) medical health officer, said she wanted to take a moment to reflect on how unregulated drug deaths have impacted this community.

Khaketla reviewed coroner data within the VCH region.

“It is not news to you, as a community, that over time, the community has experienced significant overdose drug deaths, through an increasingly toxic and unpredictable drug supply that has been contaminated with fentanyl and other drugs,” said Khaketla. “Those deaths have fluctuated by year. The peak number was in 2021 where there were 17 people who lost their lives.

“That coincided with toxicity in the drug supply, but also some disruption in services and access due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Khaketla said over time, several interventions have been implemented in the community, including an overdose prevention site, harm reduction, plus treatment services that have been expanded.

“We are starting to see a downward trend that we are hoping will be sustained, not just in BC, but in other jurisdictions as well,” said Khaketla.

She said that each number in the statistics represents a person and each death results in significant loss to communities and families.

According to statistics in the presentation to councillors, since 2016, there have been 95 unregulated drug deaths in the Powell River region.

Khaketla said that officials are cautiously optimistic about the decreasing numbers of deaths, but BC remains in an emergency situation. She said that services related to toxic drugs have undergone an expansion within the Powell River area and that there has been a lot of capacity building.

Khaketla said she wanted to highlight the importance of overdose prevention sites in saving lives.

“They have been critical, including the community of Powell River, and continue to be an evidence-based approach that we support,” said Khaketla. “The overdose prevention site in the community is located at the Barnet Street site and also serves as a hub that connects people to treatment and recovery services. They also have a broader impact in reducing public drug use and reducing equipment lying around the community.”

Colasanto said the complexities of the paths that lead to homelessness and addiction, which, over time, have become so intertwined, is a web.

“There is no one path in and there is no one path out,” said Colasanto. “I want to call attention to the housing continuum, which is so very important.

It starts with the unhoused, it moves into emergency shelters, and then we have very limited transitional housing in town. Our one supportive housing facility currently has a four-year wait on average to get in. Subsidized housing, there is very little, affordable housing is not all that affordable, and then you get to market rental.

“It is very difficult to move one way or another on the continuum. When you are missing significant gaps in that continuum, it makes it very hard.

When someone goes to treatment and they are unhoused, they cannot come out and be expected to move right into market housing.”

Colasanto said more affordable treatment centres are needed, and housing for people to come home to is also required.

She said harm reduction is a significant part of this process, which includes supportive and accessible housing.

Councillor Cindy Elliott asked about positive outcomes coming from this community’s efforts, and whether there were things that could be organized by the community that might improve those outcomes.

where there were no unhoused people for a brief few months, then COVID-19 hit. She said that 95 deaths is a very big number for a small town, and one of the reasons that monthly statistics are not published is because deaths could be correlated to obituaries.

“We respect people’s privacy and that is why we give numbers at the end of the year,” said Colasanto. “What jumps out at me is there are folks, about four years ago, who were using our services, and some of those folks are now totally well, living their best lives.”

She said whether or not someone is going to make it is so random.

“The web of the path leading into this crisis is so deep,” said Colasanto. “It takes many opportunities to get out.

Harm reduction is here so we make sure those pathways are available for folks.”

Khaketla said in the time she has had the privilege of working with this community, a lot of data is dealt with, and a dramatic and significant improvement has been observed.

“Several years ago, there was a point in time when in the community of Powell River, the rates were so high for the size of the community, and Powell River was second only to the downtown east side [of Vancouver],” said Khaketla.

“That is quite remarkable. All the effort that went into the community response resulted in the reduction we are now seeing and hoping will be sustained.”

Powell River’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast team will be rolling into Powell River on Sunday,

September 13.

This year’s riders are Powell River RCMP corporal Philippe Caza, Jacob Hanson, from Powell River Fire Rescue, and Carrie Chernove, from BC Emergency Health Services, who have dedicated their time and effort to raise funds and awareness for children and families affected by cancer, according to a media release.

"Come cheer on the riders as they gather at the Evangel Church on Manson Avenue (5139

Manson) at 3:30 pm for a parade up Manson, into Cranberry and Townsite and then down Marine to the Town Centre Hotel," stated the team. "Then join us at the annual Cops for Cancer spaghetti dinner at the Powell River Town Centre Hotel at 5 pm."

Tickets are $25 and must be purchased in advance at the RCMP detachment, located at 7070 Barnet Street.

All proceeds support the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast.

Tips fundraiser supports wildlife society PROWLS receives funds contributed by store’s customers

Oceanside Entertainment has announced the conclusion of its three month fundraising campaign called Tips for Non-Profits, which raised $3,000 to support Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society (PROWLS).

The campaign ran from May through July, encouraging customers and visitors to contribute tips toward assisting PROWLS in its vital mission of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing wildlife in the qathet community.

“Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of our patrons, Oceanside Entertainment was able to collect $3,000 in donations, directly aid-

ing the operational and medical expenses that PROWLS incurs in saving local animals,” stated Karyne Bailey, Oceanside’s owner. “We are thrilled by the incredible support from our customers and visitors.

Housing market slows in July Real estate sales softer following particularly active June

Real estate sales in July 2026 were softer compared to sales in July of the previous year.

According to Powell River Sunshine Coast Real Estate Board president Curtis Yungen, July was quieter, following a particularly active June, with 18 singlefamily home sales compared with 39 in June 2026 and 27 in July 2025.

“Year-to-date single-family sales are down approximately 14 per cent from last year, with new listings down by a similar amount,” said Yungen. “Despite the slower sales activity, homes that sold in July averaged 53 days on market, compared with 89 days last July.

“The average singlefamily sale price in July was $642,700, down 21.4 per cent from July 2025, while the median price was $575,000, down 17.9 per cent. With only 18 sales during the month, these figures can be influenced quite significantly by the type and price range of properties that happen to sell, particularly in a smaller market like ours.”

Yungen said Canadian Real Estate Association’s MLS home price index (HPI) gives some helpful additional perspective.

“The single-family benchmark price was $578,000 in July, down a more modest 2.9 per cent year-over-year,” said Yungen. “The HPI tracks the value of a typical home, and is less affected by the mix of properties sold in a particular month.

“Overall, the market remains softer than last year, but well-priced, desirable properties continue to sell

and the supply of new listings remains relatively limited.”

In the single-family homes category, in July 2026, there were 18 sales, valued at $11,568,600, compared to 27 sales in July 2025, valued at $21,389,300.

There were five condo, apartment and duplex sales in July 2026, valued at $2,182,000, compared to no sales in July 2025.

The totals for residential sales were 23 in July 2026, valued at $23,750,600, compared to 27 sales in July 2025, valued at $21,389,300.

In the nonresidential category, there were five sales of vacant land in July 2026, valued at $1,234,500, compared to five sales in July 2025, valued at $856,900. There were two sales of industrial, commercial and institutional properties in July 2026, valued at $2,445,000, compared to none in July 2025.

According to lifelong prospector and author Norm Hutton, in times of economic uncertainty, the allure of gold mining has always beckoned to those seeking opportunity.

In his new book, A Poor Man's Guide to Placer Mining: From Dirt to Dollars: Your Roadmap to Striking Gold, he maps out the basics of prospecting to the intricacies of drift mining, the art of panning, the precision of sniping and the technique of crevicing, all essential skills for maximizing gold recovery.

"If you lose your job, or you can't find work, this might be the answer to your problems," said Hutton. "However, many ventures falter due to a lack of essential knowledge."

Hutton said his book is a comprehensive guide for aspiring miners and offers a roadmap to success in the world of placer mining.

"It's not just about finding gold, it's also about surviving and thriving in the wilderness," said Hutton. "I cover the basics of prospecting, drift mining, the art of panning, all without spending money."

What sets this guide apart, said Hutton, is its emphasis on self-sufficiency, teaching readers how to craft their own equipment, from sluice boxes to rockers.

Hutton also has a sense of humour and passion about his craft, which he started at the age of six.

"I started going out with my dad on prospecting trips throughout BC, finding deposits of silver, lead, copper, iron and coal," said Hutton. "I eventually started doing my own placer mining."

Gold prospecting is still a popular activity along BC's river banks, with people using simple pans and tools to extract metals, minerals or other valuable material from stream beds.

A working placer claim is a registered mining claim where the holder has the active legal right to explore, develop and extract loose minerals, such as gold nuggets and gemstones.

Hand panning doesn't require any type of permission and can be done at recreational panning reserves, but not federal land, treaty settlement lands, reservations, parks, conservancies, ecological reserves or protected areas.

After years of building dredges and working placer claims on the Fraser River and in the Wells-Barkerville area, Hutton left placer mining to become an industrial electrician.

"While I was working my trade, a fellow electrician suggested that I teach night school on placer mining," said Hutton. "The class was very successful; I ended up teaching full classrooms of students at a local college."

He encourages younger people especially to give gold panning and prospecting a try, not just for possible financial benefit, (gold is now worth more than

$6,000 Canadian dollars an ounce), but also for the wilderness aspect and to learn valuable survival skills.

Hutton will be at Powell River Public Library at 2 pm on Saturday, August 29.

"There's gold in Powell River," said Hutton. "I'll be brewing up some campfire tea to serve, and I'll go through the routine of gold panning and what they call traversing."

There is nothing as good as the taste of campfire tea and campfire toast, he added.

"I'll be talking about tips for shelter construction, long-term camping and wilderness safety, ensuring they are prepared for any challenge they may encounter. The guide is meant to empower people and turn anyone's gold-mining dreams into reality, all without a major financial investment."

Hutton is retired and, with his wife Sharie, spent much of the past many years RVing around the country, and recently relocated to Courtenay.

Swimmers wrap up fifth season West Coast Wind Swim Club member has impressive meet in California

August is winding down and so is the West Coast Wind Swim Club.

Powell River Recreation Complex will soon be closing for its annual maintenance, giving the swimmers a moment to rest and recoup before starting their sixth season.

This summer also saw new athletes joining the team, new coaches being hired and a successful end of season swim meet for Ewan Naylor.

Naylor had the opportunity to travel to Concord, California to

compete in the Far Westerns longcourse swim meet from July 30 to August 2. To enter this meet, Naylor had to achieve some tough time standards.

He entered in five events: 200-metre individual medley, 200-metre freestyle, 50-metre breaststroke (which he took second place in overall), 100-metre breaststroke (fourth-place finish), and 200-metre breaststroke (fifth-place finish).

“Naylor went into the meet just ready for a cool new experience, knowing that the competition would be tough, and while competing in a new country in an outdoor 50-metre pool was bound to be memorable, coming out of the meet with medals, ribbons and seven personal best times was a bonus,” stated head coach Marissa Schweitzer, in a media release. “The club couldn't be more proud and ex-

cited for the upcoming 2026/2027 season.”

Registration for the fall will be open on August 20 on the club's website, at westcoastwind.ca.

This summer, the club encouraged cross-training by initiating a bike/ swim event alongside the Mahony Bike Co., to support the swimmers in finding other sports to keep them active and building different muscle groups.

“It is a well-researched fact that a well-rounded athlete who crosstrains in multiple sports is both more successful in sport, but is also happier in life, with less likelihood of experiencing injury,” stated Schweitzer. “This popular event was spearheaded by coach Megan Greig, with the help of Jordan Marciniak, and will be an annual summer event moving forward in future seasons.”

Powell River swimmer Grayce Hilton delivered a strong performance at the 2026 BC Summer Games, capturing a total of four medals, despite the presence of ongoing wildfires that temporarily can-

celled the event’s outdoor competition.

Competing in Kelowna from July 22 to July 26, Hilton represented the Special Olympics BC-Powell River in multiple swimming competitions over five days.

The provincial event brought together more than 3,000 young athletes, coaches and officials from across the province.

Hilton made a splash in the swimming events; her standout moment came in the 50-metre breaststroke, where she claimed a silver medal. She then added three bronze medals to her collection: 100-metre individual medley (IM),

200-metre freestyle and the 50-metre freestyle relay.

"I have been swimming since I was 13 years old," said Hilton. "It [BC Summer Games] was highly competitive and nerve-racking at first, because I wasn't sure if we were going to make it with the fires."

During the games in Kelowna on July 23, organizers temporarily postponed outdoor sports for the afternoon due to very high-risk wildfire smoke, but events resumed the next morning when air quality improved.

"I just enjoy getting in the water and showing what my

skills are," said Hilton. "I'm taking a break from swimming practice now, but we start again in October at the pool."

She encourages anyone who receives an offer to be in the summer games,to go for it and not miss the chance.

"I'm talking to athletes, too, because if you get the chance, I wouldn't decline it," said Hilton. “I would definitely say yes, BC Summer Games are a biennial celebration of sport and community, bringing together BC's best emerging high performance athletes, trained coaches and certified officials for five days of sport and activity.

Dulcie J. MacFarlane

Born in London, England on May 8, 1942, Dulcie MacFarlane passed away on August 28, 2025.

Dulcie is survived and missed dearly by her loving husband of 65 years, Phil MacFarlane; her daughters Chris, Sue, Lisa and their husbands; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister Dee, twin sister Victoria and family and two brother-inlaws Ray, Trev and families.

She is predeceased by her sister Dinnah and her grandson Matt MacFarlane.

Edmund Wegner February 14, 1939 - June 26, 2026

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Edmund Wegner, formerly of Powell River, BC. Edmund died peacefully June 26, 2026 while in a care home in Maidstone, Saskatchewan.

He is predeceased by his wife, Linda, and leaves behind two sons, Leonard and John, as well as three granddaughters and one great granddaughter. As one of seven siblings, he is survived only by his youngest sister, Frieda.

Edmund was born in 1939 in what is now Poland. Having been orphaned by the end of the war, he and his siblings arrived in Canada from Germany in 1954.

In his 30’s, Ed exchanged the carpentry business that he and his brother owned, for a life of service as a pastor. Edmund served in churches in Kerrobert, Sk., Castlegar, BC., Sointula, BC., and Stoughton, Sk. Following his retirement, Ed and Linda moved to Powell River in 2002 to be near family. Edmund loved living in Powell River, being near the ocean and especially the mild winters. He may be remembered for his daily walks, rain or shine, from his home in Townsite to the Town Centre mall and back.

A graveside service will be held for Edmund on October 2, 2026 at 1 pm, at the Powell River Regional Cemetery on Crown Avenue.
