City of Powell River’s approach to determining how it compensates elected officials is something a little out of the ordinary, says an expert in BC local governments.

University of Victoria and Capilano University local government professor Allison Habkirk said she has never heard of the method the city is using before, and that makes it “novel.”

While the provincial government sets clear direction on how local governments operate through the Local Government Act and Community Charter, it does not specify how local governments remunerate, or pay, elected officials.

“Remuneration across the province is really varied, but it is usually based on comparisons,” said Habkirk. “They look at the norm in other similar communities and take into account their own history to reach an amount.”

Powell River’s existing bylaw, enacted more than 10 years ago, sets the mayor’s salary at $35,000, 2.5 times that of a councillor ($14,000), with both amounts being adjusted at the start of a new year to the provincial consumer price index.

The assumption is that the mayor works a 40-hour week, while councillors work a 24-hour week.

At a January 12 city finance committee meeting, councillor Karen Skadsheim said she objected to the idea of using comparisons with remuneration rates of other communities to give council a raise because it did not provide an adequate rational.

However, the issue of what Powell River Regional District electoral area directors pay themselves is something that cannot be overlooked, said Skadsheim.

It is estimated that electoral area directors are granted just under $20,000 per year for their service, a bone of contention for some on council.

With a unanimous vote, Council Remuneration and Reimbursement Bylaw 2458, 2017, was given its first three readings at a council meeting on Thursday, February 2. If approved at a future meeting, the bylaw would establish a raise for councillors that would bring their salary up to 58 per cent of the average Powell River salary in 2013. The mayor’s pay would still equate to 2.5 times what the councillors would be paid.

Under the bylaw, the annual rate for councillors would go up about $3,000 to $19,600, and up about $8,000 to $49,000 for the mayor.

Councillor Russell Brewer, who sits on the regional board as a municipal director, said he is comfortable with the proposed changes.

“It puts councillors at parity with the electoral area directors, so in my mind that’s a good rationale,” said Brewer at the meeting.

“Equating that to a percentage of the average income in Powell River sets it on a

good base going forward.”

Skadsheim said at the meeting she did not think of the proposed increase for the councillors and mayor as a raise so much as “a recognition of the body of work being asked of people to take time from their jobs.”

Councillor Maggie Hathaway told council the discussion on remuneration is one that has come up year after year during her time as an elected official, but there seemed to be less political will to move forward with changing it in the past.

“We struggle with this. It’s really hard to give yourself a raise,” she said. “There’s never a good time.”

Hathaway said she supports the change because of the percentage approach.

She said it “substantiates” the amount of remuneration she receives and she sees it acting as an incentive for council to ensure the average income of Powell River residents continues to increase by bringing “good industry with good paying jobs” to town.

Habkirk, who also served as a councillor and mayor of Central Saanich, said most communities could not afford to compensate elected officials to the extent they probably deserve.

She said the job has become increasingly challenging as local governments have

to actually do the job.”

Habkirk added that for the system to work well, it must attract a diversity of people with different ages and experiences, all willing to put time and energy into acting as a steward for the community.

“You don’t just want people who are retired or who have sufficient income that they can afford to do the job,” she said. “If you were a single parent in your community and were expected to spend 30 to 40 hours per week as an elected official, and there wasn’t enough compensation, you would probably not be willing to, or even able to, do the job. It’s a real challenge.”

Day said staff has been looking at places to make further cuts and some of those increases will be offset by the city bringing in more revenue than expected, but residents should expect a higher tax bill than last year.

“The big reason we’re sitting at the 2.9 per cent, with not much room for anything else right now, is our collective agreements with firefighters, police, CUPE and a little bit on the management side,” said Brewer after the meeting. “This makes balancing the budget difficult.

Staff has been able to trim $285,000 out of individual department budgets, Day told the committee.

Of that 2.9 per cent potential tax hike, 2.4 per cent will go toward covering operational increases and the other 0.5 per cent for water, sewer and garbage. At the last finance meeting, the committee looked at two per cent user-fee increases for garbage ($29), water ($6.15), sewer ($2.35) and average sewer frontage parcel taxes ($6.75).

Based on the city’s current tax base, a 2.4 per cent increase would bring in approximately $335,000 in added tax revenue.

A 2.9 per cent increase for an average single family home, assessed at $236,237, would mean that homeowner would pay $2,565.43 in general municipal property taxes and user fees in 2017, about a $75 increase over 2016 rates. That does not include taxes the city collects

for Powell River Regional District and School District 47.

Work developing next year’s city budget is far from complete, so that proposed increase will likely not be what taxpayers actually see, said Brewer.

The finance committee will meet again on Thursday, February 23, to review and discuss proposed department capital project budgets. Depending on the outcome of that meeting, the budget will be further calibrated.

“This budget with a 2.9 per cent increase is pretty much maintaining service levels with a few cuts, no improvements and no increases to services,” said Brewer. “It’s basically a core budget. There are still cuts to be made.”

Brewer said he favours the idea of the committee directing staff to find ways to reduce the increase to 1.9 per cent, so it is in line with Statistics Canada’s consumer price index.

Catalyst investigates spill A minor spill of ground limestone caused by equipment failure at Catalyst Paper Corporation’s Powell River operations has been reported to regulatory authorities, according to company vice-president and mill general manager Fred Chinn.

Chinn said the incident occurred on Saturday, February 4.

“We had an unforeseeable equipment failure that resulted in a relatively minor discharge of ground limestone into a storm drain,” said Chinn. He added the limestone is not harmful to people or the environment.

In paper-making, the stone material is used to increase paper brightness, buffer alkalinity and for some opacity.

An investigation has been launched to identify the cause of the spill and the incident has been reported to the environment ministry, said Chinn.

Homeowners in Powell River should expect higher property taxes this spring, but the question of how much higher is still open for debate, says City of Powell River councillor and finance committee chair Russell Brewer.

Council’s finance committee met Thursday, February 9, to discuss recent work on the 2017 operating budget for city departments.

City chief financial officer Kathleen Day presented the committee with an update.

Day told the committee that developing the 2017 budget has been challenging due to operating increases of roughly $950,000 in 2016 that were not covered with equivalent property tax increases. Costs included hiring additional emergency services personnel, a contract settlement for firefighters and additional operating expenses related to the new library building, among others.

“It has been a difficult budget process this year, especially for the department heads,” Day told the committee.

On top of those expenses, the cost of staffing the city’s police, fire and operations will increase a further $1 million in 2017. Powell River has an operating budget of approximately $22 million.

In a struggle that plays out in council chambers across the country at this time of year, fire chiefs stand up to defend the cost of services their departments provide for taxpayers.

Powell River Fire Rescue (PRFR) chief Terry Peters appeared before City of Powell River council on Thursday, February 9, to provide a report on the emergency services department, specifically PRFR. “2016 was a very busy year for us,” Peters told the committee.

Fire rescue responded to more than 1,000 calls in 2016 and 2017 is shaping up the same, said Peters.

The chief explained in his report that his department, with its 14 career and 27 auxiliary firefighters, now has the greatest depth of training in the history of the city’s force.

In the full-service department, 97 per cent of career staff members have reached exemplary training levels, he said. That directly impacts residential homeowners’ insurance rates, Peters reminded the committee.

“Our crews are the boots on the ground when things go wrong in this community,” he said. “We’re dealing with people who are potentially having the worst days of their lives. The reality is that we’re there when the

community needs us.”

Operationally, Peters said he has done his best to cut overtime costs and uses auxiliary members to assist in finding savings. He added that he has attempted to defer the purchase of costly equipment wherever he has been able to, and looks at Canadian suppliers over American ones due to added currency exchange costs.

“What I have been doing is cutting what I can without diminishing our services for our first-responder program,” Peters told the committee.

The city’s emergency services department had an annual budget of just over $3 million, well over 10 per cent of the city’s annual operating budget of approximately $22 million.

“Every dollar that comes through the department I scrutinize to make sure [taxpayers] are getting value,” said Peters.

That assurance did not stop city councillor Rob Southcott, who is also BC Ambulance Service Powell River station chief, from questioning the resource allocation to operate the department’s first-responder program.

Southcott said the cost of the fire department had

risen 37 per cent during the past four years.

“I just don’t see this as sustainable,” said Southcott.

Not included in the 2017 budget, but noted in Peters’ report, was the need for an additional $167,000 to hire a fire-protection officer, a position that would help conduct planning services related to building inspections.

Southcott said if the department was to look at how it operates its first-responder program and rejig it so firefighters were not attending all 911 calls, then it is possible capacity could be found to carry out the inspections without having to hire another position.

Peters responded that firefighters were filling a gap that exists due to not enough ambulance resources for the region.

“What we’re finding with the ambulance service is that we’re showing up and actually covering the shortfall for our citizens in our community,” said Peters.

Southcott said he took “a dim view” on that, because by attending those calls the municipality is condoning the provincial government putting more responsibility on the city for services it ought to provide.

“What I’m suggesting is a review of the real need,” said Southcott. “I really object to enabling provincial downloading.”

Mayor Dave Formosa agreed and suggested the discussion on the matter should be held outside of the finance meeting and the emergency services portfolio holder, councillor Maggie Hathaway, should organize a meeting to discuss the matter further.

Avalanche danger high after record snowfall Powell River Search and Rescue advises caution for backcountry exploring

dent Laurence Edwards said recent weather has made conditions more unpredictable in the area’s backcountry.

“The good thing about Powell River is that we don’t have too many really bad avalanche areas where people actually go,” said Edwards.

He added there are members of his group who are trained to perform avalanche rescues, and search and rescue has an alpine rescues sub-group.

In general, backcountry hiking trails are at low enough altitudes that avalanches would not pose a threat, but anyone going backcountry skiing at the treeline or higher is being advised to take precautions, said Edwards.

“There is always the possibility for

slides, so people should always be careful and go properly equipped,” he added.

Thoms said he encourages people to go out into Powell River’s backcountry, but to always take caution along.

“Go out and enjoy it; it’s one of the great things about living here,” said Thoms. “One of the biggest things is to not go alone and always let someone know where you’re going.”

Edwards agreed those venturing out should always let someone else know the details of the trip with an approximate return time. He added that people should pack proper clothing for the conditions with extra food and pay attention to the terrain.

The information published Wednesday is the first of several releases of data over the next year that will add more detail to the overall picture of the region’s demographics.

Data areas covered include age breakdowns, family compositions, languages spoken, immigration and ethnic origin, level of education attained and household incomes.

According to Statistics Canada data, Powell River region had a population of 19,906 in 2011. That number grew to 20,070 in 2016.

Of those 20,070 people in the region, approximately 66 per cent live in the City of Powell River, however the city saw a net decrease in recent census data. City population dropped by .06 per cent to 13,157 in 2016.

City of Powell River councillor Russell Brewer said the city’s flat population numbers surprised him given the work that has gone into the city’s resident-attraction program.

“I think we are up, so anecdotally it didn’t quite square with what everyone is seeing and hearing,” said Brewer.

Electoral Area A, north of town including Teeshoshum and Lund, received the majority of population increase with an 8.8 per cent jump from 1,008 residents in 2011 to 1,105 in 2016.

Second highest was Electoral Area B, situated next to the city boundaries, with a 3.4 per cent jump, increasing from 1,488 in 2011 to 1,541 last year.

Electoral Area D, Texada Island, saw a 2.1 per cent increase, while Electoral Area E, Lasqueti Island, had a 6.8 per cent decrease.

Brewer added that he is eager to see next month’s release of the more detailed demographic information, including Powell River resident median age.

“There is a shift we’re seeing, but maybe it’s not in population numbers per se, but maybe a trend down in average age,” he added.

Brewer said the trend of population growth in the electoral areas adjacent to the city, with rural residents accessing city services, will be part of the overall regional cost-sharing conversation.

Census data reveals increases for Powell River

Data released in the latest Statistics Canada census shows an approximate one per cent overall population growth in the Powell River region, primarily due to increases in electoral areas.

Statistics Canada made its first release of 2016 national census data on Wednesday, Februar y 8. The federal government conducts a national census of population every five years.

With recent storms adding considerable depth to the snowpack in local mountains, backcountry enthusiasts are being warned about an increase in avalanche danger.

According to the Vancouver Island Avalanche Bulletin, avalanche danger conditions at the treeline and into the alpine are considerable to high.

The latest bulletin stated that the backcountry is very dangerous in alpine and treeline areas where snow fell instead of rain. Humans are much more likely to trigger avalanches in these conditions and they could be large in many areas above 1,500 metres.

Powell River Regional District manager of emergency services Ryan Thoms said it is tough finding information that refers to Powell River directly.

“There’s information out there, but sometimes it’s hard to find it exactly about Powell River,” said Thoms.

“Powell River is not quite Sea to Sky, nor is it Vancouver Island.”

Pay council more Community debate over whether City of Powell River council should give itself a raise is sure to be heated; the concept of public servants paying themselves more is never met with blanket taxpayer approval, for reasons that are often unclear.

Elected officials work hard to balance their day jobs with municipal duties that go well beyond long council and committee meetings. Even answering correspondence and public appearances must feel like a full-time job for them sometimes.

In the case of Powell River’s elected city officials, current yearly salaries of $16,485 for a councillor and $41,342 for a mayor are just not enough. (Take a look at some of the city staff’s salaries to put those numbers in perspective.)

In order to assess how much they should be paid councillors took the average wage of a Powell River resident in 2013, the most recent information available, and settled on 58 per cent of that amount, taking into account that a councillor is expected to work a minimum of 24 hours per week.

As for the mayor, that position entails a minimum of 40 hours per week, making it nearly impossible for the city’s leader to work a job or run a business full time. The sacrifices made and hard work put in by the mayor during a four-year term is well worth the pay increase that council is proposing.

This salary increase of approximately 19 per cent would be council’s first raise above inflationary increases since 2006 and is a modest ask for elected officials who spend way more than the allotted time governing our city. Even paying them 75 per cent of the average resident’s wage would have been acceptable.

By underpaying elected officials we are creating a political system where only the independently wealthy or retired can afford to hold office.

If we set council’s salaries too low, it disqualifies a whole range of qualified candidates for the positions. On the other hand, if remuneration is too high it can create a situation where we might encourage career politicians.

If we truly want council and mayor to represent Powell River residents properly, they need to be paid fairly: not too little and not too much.

The proposed yearly salaries of $19,600 for councillors and $49,000 for the mayor are a move in the right direction.

Credit union lady leaves legacy Ruth Allan taught children the value of a penny for 23 years DAVID BRINDLE community@prpeak.com

During the Great Depression, and before and after World War II, money was hard to come by in Powell River. The idea of a weekly allowance for children was mostly unheard of, if heard of at all.

It was Ruth Allan, affectionately known throughout town as the Credit Union Lady, who, through the original credit union’s schoolsavings program, taught children about the value of a penny saved.

“In those days we weren’t talking about having a pocket full of $20 bills,” said Don Krompocker, who was part of the savings program as

a child. “We had a bunch of pennies we collected, put in a little sack, took to the credit union and came home with our little passbook.

That’s how we learned to save.”

Allan recently passed away at the age of 102. She leaves a lasting legacy, including the Ruth Allan Scholarship.

The school-savings program no longer exists, but during its time and under Allan’s stewardship it taught countless children the importance of saving.

“It was designed to support children to learn to save,” said First Credit Union vice-president of communications Sandra McDowell. “The credit union started in a time when savings were important and finances were difficult.”

Established by First Credit Union, the new $1,000 scholarship named after Allan will be awarded annually to a Powell River region grade 12 student who has made a commitment to

us a few of our wishes, instead of just our needs,” said McCann.

One of those wishes left lasting impressions on McCann and her brothers, she said, because of the sacrifice that went into it.

“She saved and saved until she could buy them each baseball mitts,” said McCann. “That was a tremendous sacrifice; my brothers still have them.”

People use fond memories and words to describe Allan.

There are stories behind the

pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters saved by children during Powell River’s early years.

“All I ever bought when I had money was those crazy turtles at the old five-anddime store downtown,” said Krompocker. “You’d buy a turtle in a little bowl, bring it home and two days later the thing had died, so you’d save up, go buy another turtle and hope it was going to live.”

According to McCann, one of Allan’s fondest memo-

ries was of Phil Carriere, who used to come barefoot across the field to Kelly Creek Community School, bringing his nickel to deposit into his savings account.

Allan attended Carriere’s graduation and saw him go off to university.

Even though she taught children the value of saving, her daughter said Allan did have a credit card later in life.

“I went to cancel it,” she said, “and I found out they owed her 18 cents.”

making a difference in the lives of others, and demonstrated the capacity to save for and contribute to the cost of their education.

A cco rd i n g to S c h o o l District 47 superintendent of schools Jay Yule, Allan taught financial literacy, life skills and project-based learning , before those phrases were invented.

“She taught generations of students the value of saving and practical skills of using banks,” said Yule. “A scholarship is a fitting legacy to Ruth’s dedication and work with children.”

One of the children who learned the value of saving was Allan’s daughter, Evelyn McCann.

“My mom was widowed very young with my two brothers and didn’t have two pennies to her name when she came to Powell River,” said McCann. “She had to work really hard in order to support them. Anything she had was hard-won. She had to save for everything.”

Saving was Allan’s way of life, said McCann. When it came to money, she said her mom’s philosophy was never buying on credit, but to always save.

“She would save and grant

A uniquely designed stick has become symbolic and meaningful among first nations communities in BC. At an upcoming Tla’amin Nation ceremony, the simple stick will represent a commitment to actively stop violence against indigenous women and girls.

“The stick has white, black, yellow and red, and they all mean something,” said Tla’amin Health family support and wellness worker Sally Louie. “Red honours murdered and missing indigenous women, yellow honours our breath of life, black honours our body and white honours the knowledge and wisdom of the elders.”

Tla’amin’s Standing Up Ceremony for women and girls is, in part, the result of a grant from BC First Nations Health Authority.

According to Louie, it was the community’s idea to hold a one-day gath-

ering to honour indigenous women.

Louie said she hopes leaders, individuals, families and service providers from Tla’amin will share stories and ideas for empowerment.

“I hope to hear that our community is committed to speak up and stop violence if they see it,” said Louie. “I hope it empowers the women and young girls who are going to be there that we are behind them and here for them.”

Knowing where to go for sharing and counsel empowers women and is the first step in trying to stop violence that happens in Tla’amin, said Louie.

“It’s very quiet,” she said. “The ladies don’t want to come out or there’s the shame with any violence against anyone.”

Louie said that in a small community, victims of violence isolate themselves and it is hard for them to reach out to health providers.

The Standing Up Ceremony to stop violence against all indigenous women

and girls is also a community’s voice in the national discussion, she added.

The Liberal government announced a cross-Canada inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women in 2015. A committee has yet to begin hearings.

North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney, who represents 20 indigenous communities in the riding, wants the inquiry to ensure smaller, remote and rural areas will be listened to.

“I’ve definitely heard from the community that there are issues they want to deal with,” said Blaney. “I’m really impressed with them hosting the Standing Up Ceremony for women and girls. It’s a strong message to the community that violence against women and girls won’t be tolerated.”

The Standing Up Ceremony is open to members of the Tla’amin community and service providers and takes place 5-7 pm Thursday, February 16, at Tla’amin Salish Centre.

They were like nothing anyone had heard before, but not, as director Jim Jarmusch calls them, “the greatest rock and roll band ever.”

That designation, as with anything in arts, is subjective.

Music fans who are not hardcore Iggy Pop and The Stooges fans can decide for themselves when Powell River Film Festival screens the documentary Gimme Danger; super-fan Jarmusch’s “love letter” to The Stooges.

Iggy Pop and The Stooges are as definitively independent in the American music scene as Jarmusch is attributed to in the American independent film movement. The Stooges have often been credited as influencing the origins of punk, alternative, heavy metal and rock music. The original band was Iggy Pop, guitarist Ron Asheton, drummer Scott Asheton and bassist Dave Alexander.

At the film festival screening of Gimme Danger, Powell River Women’s Punk Rock Choir will do a short performance to introduce the film.

“The choir is really excited to be part of this year’s film festival,” said choir member Karen Skadsheim, “and we are plotting a fitting tribute to an incredible band that had a profound impact on music.”

It’s hard to pin down The Stooges sound, but there is no disputing they launched a jackhammer attack on rock when they came out of the Detroit scene in the ’60s.

Its most successful album of four that the band put out was Raw Power in 1973, mixed by David Bowie, according to the rock-encyclopedic mind of Mark Lemna, owner of Powell River’s Roxy Records.

“It’s a loud, noisy album, which is a good representation of what The Stooges were like,” said Lemna.

Artist and musician Colin McCrae, who was a member of Victoria punk band Pigment Vehicle before he moved to Powell River and became owner of Base Camp, remembers hearing Iggy 30 years ago.

“I had a friend that I lived with for a while who ran a record store and he had a huge collection of vinyl,” said McCrae. “He was a big Iggy fan, so I pulled some of his music out and listened to it back then.”

and Bowie began a working relationship that would last for decades.

As a frontperson, Iggy, who is now 69 years old, was out of control; one of the first guys to stage dive, according to Lemna.

The Stooges played raw and raucous concerts, but Lemna said rock and roll has a soft spot for the band and particularly Iggy.

“He really enjoyed provoking the audience at the time,” said Lemna.

“Provoking was an easy thing for them to do, because they were on

the outside of popularity. It was predetermined that they were going to piss off any authority.”

In Jarmusch’s film, Iggy talks about the influence of the sounds he heard growing up in Detroit.

They were not the influences of other bands, but the sounds of the giant auto-manufacturing plants pounding big, huge, slamming metal sounds before those plants were silenced and went to rust.

“He grew up in Detroit,” said Lemna. “Those were the sounds The Stooges wanted to create.”

Lemna did not see the original Stooges before Alexander died in 1975 or when they reformed in 2004.

“My list of people who I really want to see is pretty short at this point,” he said. “Iggy is certainly at the top of it.”

Lemna will be seeing Iggy and The Stooges, at least on film, when Gimme Danger plays the upcoming Powell River Film Festival on Friday, February 17, at 9 pm.

The daughter of Lund hippies, Tai Ullmann has returned back to her roots. She has gone full circle; studying at an alternative college, moving to San Francisco and then New York, where she met and fell in love with her partner and collaborator, Theo Angell, and back to Lund. The couple have done a documentary about Lund hippies called The End of the Road. It will have its world premiere at the Powell River Film Festival.

When did you discover film?

I was a 19-year-old college student getting interested in my Jewish heritage and

coming out as a lesbian. I did a piece with a friend of mine called Bad Jews in the Kitchen.

We interviewed friends in my kitchen and made a short documentary that ended up getting recognized as this identity piece people could relate to. We learned how to shoot and edit. We were selftaught. We were everything; talent, crew and tech.

Why do you like making documentaries?

I think it’s like a puzzle; watching it come to life. You never know what’s going to happen. You never know what the story is going to reveal and that’s what’s so exciting. You kind of picture it, you direct the questions, you get people talking and telling you things. When you’re

sitting with the material and the story starts to tell itself that is an exciting time.

Is interviewing your favourite part of the process?

I love doing the interviews.

These are peoples’ lives and they deserve the time and attention to be heard. I love the interview process, but I think the editing, when you’re sitting there, putting pieces together, playing it and having this initial response like, “Ahhh I feel that,” that’s an amazing moment.

How did you and your partner Theo meet?

We met at a gay bar in New York with some friends of ours and just instantly fell in love, and then we started working creatively together

throughout. He’s constantly making art. He’s the most prolific artist I know. This Lund film is the first really big project that we’ve worked on together.

You did the interviews for The End of the Road.

What was Theo’s role?

Theo was the main editor on the project. He would edit something together and we’d get to watch it and say, “Oh, wow, that was a story that we didn’t even realize was that important.” This is an unusual film. This film is a community telling its story, so there’s a lot of voices and we didn’t know how that was going to work. It was amazing to have all of these community voices and telling this one story.

Performing arts return More than 300 entries have been received from individual musicians, community bands, choirs and dance companies for the 73rd Powell River Festival of Performing Arts.

Most entrants are from Powell River, with the exception of some visiting dancers. Musicians and performers range in age from children to seniors.

“I doubt there is another community event that has continued as long,” said Powell River Festival of

Performing Arts committee chair Joyce Carlson.

This year’s festival begins Saturday, February 18, with competition in six different disciplines, including piano, instrumental and band, vocal and choral, strings, speech arts and dance. The event concludes with the Grand Concert in Evergreen Theatre at Powell River Recreation Complex on Saturday, March 4.

Performance and competition venues for the adjudicated festival are the Evergreen, Max Cameron Theatre and James Hall.

Victoria Baroque Players and Vancouver’s Pacific Baroque Orchestra member Paul Luchkow of Victoria, who will be hearing the strings. Prior to being an adjudicator, Luchkow said he was invited to play at Powell River Academy of Music a number of years ago.

“I’ve developed many friendships in Powell River over the years and I’ve known that it is a vibrant, musical community,” said Luchkow, a violinist and violist who plays a range of music from 17th century to present day.

Luchkow added that the

calibre of string players who attend the festival is very high.

“To listen to the strong players coming up through the ranks is a real pleasure,” he said. “I expected it to be high-quality activity and it certainly is.”

When adjudicating, Luchkow listens for the “basic nuts and bolts,” including sound, playing in tune and knowledge of the music to tell a story.

“I’m the kind of person who really enjoys music; it’s really cool,” he said. “I have a lot of enthusiasm for it and I want to see how other

“I remember it like it was yesterday, coming in as a 17-year-old player,” said McCarrick. “At the time, the 20-year-olds said ‘time flies by in a blink.’ They were right, and I am happy to have spent it all in Powell River.”

Kings head coach Kent Lewis said McCarrick has proven himself a good person and teammate, and that he’s had a strong year.

“He’s been a good soldier for us,” said Lewis. “This year he’s been a big part of our penalty kill and he’s really solidified a good third line with Liam Lawson, Gavin Rauser and sometimes Carter Turnbull.”

McCarrick said he remembers the nerves he felt when he first walked into the dressing room, but the veterans made it easy, a roll he has now taken on.

“That’s why you have veterans in the room that can calm you and show you the ropes,” he said. “That’s what I’m trying to do this year.”

Kings won twice in two tries last week. Brian Wilson recorded his third shutout of the year in the blowout over the Bulldogs.

Against divisions rivals Victoria Grizzles, star forward Jonny Evans scored the winner in a close 4-3 game.

Evans recently received major recognition for his offensive outburst in the month of January. After scoring 11 goals and adding 13 assists in 11 games, Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) named Evans its first star of the month.

As the governing body of Junior A hockey in Canada, CJHL includes 10 leagues and 126 teams across the country.

Evans also moved into a second-place tie in the BCHL scoring race thanks to his torrid scoring pace in January. Kings were also hot during the month, losing only one of 11 games played.

Kings have defeated the division-leading Grizzlies in each of the last three meet-

ings between the two teams.

Lewis said that competitive play was not evident at the beginning of the season when Kings faced Victoria.

“It always frustrated me,” said Lewis. “For whatever reason, we just played like horse-crap against them. It’s a club that is hungry. They didn’t make the playoffs last year.”

Grizzlies currently hold first place in the BC Hockey League (BCHL) Island

Division, just four points ahead of the Kings, but with two games in hand.

After the division frontrunners, seven points separate Nanaimo Clippers, Cowichan Valley Capitals and the Bulldogs in a fight for playoff spots.

In the first round of playoffs, Grizzlies will play against the fourth-place finisher. Kings will have home ice advantage against the third-place team.

Annual bonspiel raises money for ALS Memorial event named after late curler Jim Betteridge DAVID BRINDLE community@prpeak.com

At the first bonspiel held in Jim Betteridge’s name last year, Curl for ALS at Powell River Curling Club raised about $4,800. Money raised at the Jim Betteridge Memorial Bonspiel is donated to ALS Society of BC. Most of the donations last year came from the “generosity of people forking out some money,” said curling club ice-maker Chris Heard.

Heard, who co-organizes the annual event with Betteridge’s widow, Nancy, said he hopes even more money will be raised this year.

Betteridge suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

ALS is a specific disease where the nerve cells that control muscles die. There is no cure.

Gehrig, who played 17 seasons for the New York Yankees in the 1920s and 1930s, was diagnosed in 1939. His farewell speech to Yankee fans is revered and remembered as one of the most noble in sports history.

According to Heard, Betteridge passed away in 2015 after suffering with ALS for about 18 months.

He said Betteridge worked for BC Hydro for many years and his first love was fishing.

“He loved to be out fishing,” said Heard. “He was in great shape up until ALS got him.”

All money raised at the Curl for ALS event goes into a special “I’d Rather Be Fishing” fund, he added.

Heard said Betteridge was a good curler at all positions, but he usually played skip.

“He was in the masters playdowns and I think they finished second in the province three or four years ago,” said Heard.

A maximum of 64 curlers are entered in the bonspiel, but there is a waiting list. Teams are not determined beforehand.

“You don’t know who you’re playing with until the morning of the spiel,” said Heard. “Curlers play three games with the same team and the most points wins.”
