Choosing pictures and stories created and written by qathet region students to feature in our 2021 Holiday Greetings edition was a difficult endeavour. Peak staff divvied up hundreds of submissions to read and consider before deciding on the final selections that grace the following pages. Once again, the burgeoning creativity of students in the region impressed one and all, and provided us with a festive boost to the holiday season.

Once upon a time there was a ghost who lived in a family’s attic. He was small and had bright white sheets covering him. Every day, he always did the same thing, namely just floating around. When the family was gone, he explored the house; he liked seeing the family photos because they reminded him of his own family. One day while exploring he saw a new photo of the family celebrating Christmas. This made him sad because every Christmas he was always alone, he felt like nobody cared about him, so he decided he was going to try to change that. The next day he went downstairs while the family was watching television and said, “Hello my name is Gus, the ghost, I live in your attic.” The family started screaming, “Oh my god, there’s a ghost,” while crying. The ghost flew back to his attic. Later that day he heard footsteps walking up the stairs, a little girl opened the door and said, “Hello mister ghost, we’re sorry for getting scared earlier, we were just so shocked seeing you.” “It’s fine,” said the ghost. “I totally understand.” Then the girl said, “Would you like to come celebrate Christmas with us?” The Ghost was ecstatic, he couldn’t wait! He said, “Are you sure?” The girl responded, “Of course.” So the ghost and the family celebrated Christmas together and for the first time in years the ghost finally felt appreciated, and they lived a happily ever ending.

Celebrating Christmas T I M O F E I

Z O N O V

Grade eight École Côte du Soleil

Inside their small house, a poor family was celebrating Christmas. There was a snowstorm outside. They were having a traditional Christmas dinner, which consisted of turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes and vegetables. While eating, they appreciated each other’s presence at the table, celebrating Christmas together. In their neighbour’s house, there was a super-rich family celebrating Christmas, too, but they weren’t enjoying Christmas as much as the poor family, because they were only looking into their computers, investing in stocks. Suddenly, a blizzard hit and became so strong that it tore through their town’s power grid. The rich family couldn’t invest into stocks anymore, and then they realized how nice it is to see each other’s faces, to speak, to tell jokes, to taste how good the turkey is. After installing candle lights in the house they invited the poor family to their big house to celebrate Christmas, and all together, they appreciated it.

WISHING YOU A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS,

HAPPY HOLIDAYS & A WONDERFUL NEW YEAR!

North Pole Olympics J A C K

I L L I N G

Grade seven Kelly Creek Community School

Hoping your holidays are filled with love, family and happiness

Every year on the first day of December, the North Pole holds the North Pole Olympics for all species across the North Pole, including the elves. The first event was sledding with an elf and a polar bear. The elf had a customized sled while the polar bear was just going on his stomach down the ice. The race started and the elf took a quick lead but then the polar bear caught up and won. The polar bear gets the gold medal. Next event was wrapping. The elf that could wrap the fastest won. The contestants are elf 1 and elf 2. The wrapping started and elf 1 was going at lightning speed and won the gold medal.

The next event was flying with Santa’s magic between the reindeer. The first reindeer was Dancer, the second was Dasher and last but not least, Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer. They were all at the starting line then they started, and Rudolf took a quick lead, then Dancer passed Rudolf with Dasher in pursuit. Then Dasher quickly overtook both and won the gold medal. The last event was running and there were three contestants. A polar bear, Prancer the reindeer and an elf with customized rocket shoes. It was a quick race because the elf had rocket shoes. That concluded the North Pole Olympics.

Grade seven Kelly Creek Community School The ref dropped the puck, and the game was on! Wait a minute. You’re probably wondering what I’m talking about. Well, two nights ago, two teams got in a fight at the rink and now they are battling it out on Christmas Eve. All of it is over some ferry tickets so they can get back home for Christmas. So, now that you’re all caught up, let’s get back to the game. The puck has been dropped and the Beagles have it. They’re on their way up the boards getting past everyone and passing back and forth. And there’s a pass in front of the net and it’s a GOAL! 1-0 for the Beagles. Now the Ravens have got the puck and are bringing it up the centre, and suddenly out of nowhere, somebody from the Beagles knocked one of the Ravens off his feet. “Penalty!” yelled the ref. The Ravens got the puck back in position. A pass goes up the boards then that guy dekes out three people at once and passes up in front, and GOAL! The crowd goes wild with 17 seconds left on the clock. It’s a tie game! In the end they had to split the tickets and they all made it home for Christmas with their families. The end.

There is a magic gift where there is a magical reindeer inside the gift. The reindeer told naughty kids to hop onto its back. The reindeer only went to the really naughty kids and the reindeer was to bring the children to the North Pole, where Santa would teach them to be good kids. So Santa made them work really hard making gifts. At the end of the day, Santa and his elves made hot cocoa and read them stories and ate cookies with them but only if they did a good job at helping out at the North Pole. Below Santa’s house there were a bunch of gifts, and on Christmas night, the reindeer safely brought them home to the reformed kids’ beds and tucked them in safely. That year, they got presents instead of coal because they helped out at the North Pole.

The fox kit’s eyes widened as he looked at the frozen landscape. It had snowed overnight! In his short experience of life on earth, he had only known the world as orange and brown. “What happened? Why did the ground give way?” he said as his sister bounded outside the cave. “Come on! It’s just snow!” she shouted as she bounced into the white stuff. He cautiously put one paw into the snow; it was wet…and cold! And it made a funny crunching sound when he stepped on it. Gathering all the courage he

could muster, he leaped into the snow, sending white powder flying everywhere. They laughed and played in the snow all day, making patterns with their tails and rolling down snowbanks. “Again! Again!” he shouted as he raced his sister back to the top. By the time their mother called them back, his little heart was racing, and his soul was full. As he crawled up against his mother’s fur to sleep, he wished for morning to come quickly so he could play in the snow once again.

Once upon a time there was an elf named Small (his name was Small because the elf was very short). He lived in Elfiland (the country where only elves live). The elf really wanted to work with Santa Claus’s other elves. Small needed to be one of three winners of a race that happened once a year before going to help Santa Claus. So, Small went to try winning the race. He almost was at the finish line in a couple seconds, but ahead of him was another elf (his name was Speedy because he was always faster than the others), who was definitely about to win, but suddenly, Speedy tripped and fell! Small stopped and ran back to Speedy because he thought that Speedy needed help. So, Small helped Speedy and they went together to the finish line. But after all that, Small finished last! He was so sad because it was one of his chances to work for Santa Claus. Meanwhile, the judges were whispering for five minutes and decided that Small had won. So, this is what the judges said: “Because you helped someone else you are going to be one of Santa Claus’s workers.” You can’t imagine how happy Small was. Finally, his wish had come true!

Holiday Bash

A N N A B E L L E

S H O S T A K

Grade six Kelly Creek Community School

It’s time for the Holiday Bash. Elves, polar bears, reindeers, gingerbread people, snow people and penguins. They all came! They meet up at the party shed. The elves are there first to set up before everyone gets there. They all get there and one of the penguins is the DJ. And they start off by playing the game: pin the nose on the snowman. Then they had a dance battle, polar bears against reindeers, and the polar bears won. They started to sing Christmas songs and have some punch, cookies, cake, candy canes and hot chocolate. A little later the gingerbread people felt like something was missing. Then they realized what was missing, the elves forgot to invite Santa but they decided not to tell anyone so they wouldn’t ruin the party. It was time to tell everyone what they wanted for Christmas. The elves wanted sleds, the polar bears wanted fish tacos, the reindeers wanted books, the gingerbread people wanted dolls, the snow people wanted jackets and the penguins wanted stuffies. Then one of the gingerbread people couldn’t help it anymore and they said, “You guys forgot to invite Santa!” Everyone gasped but the elves did not gasp, they got so worried that Santa would find out. Then they heard a knock on the door. One of the elves opened it and said “HIDE!” It was Santa, but he did not care that they forgot to invite him, he just wanted to hang out.

My Little Christmas Tree S U N N Y

Grade five Kelly Creek Community School

I would like to make a toast to another Christmas with my family. All of you here tell me that no matter what is going on in the world, I have my loving family through and through to help me through the rough bits. You all know that with Emily and her new diagnosis it is just a miracle she is here with us for another Christmas Eve and I couldn’t ask for anything else this Christmas. The family sits down for their Christmas dinner but while everyone starts to eat, 10-year-old Emily looks to her dad, who is scooping gravy onto his plate. “Dad, I know it’s been a hard year on you, but I want you to know that you are the best dad I could have had.”

Enzo Ochoa, grade nine, École Côte du Soleil

Dad stops and looks at Emily. He doesn’t say anything but gives her a kiss on the cheek and smiles. After dinner Max, Emily’s brother, said to Emily, “Do you want to go to the park? The adults are just talking about politics and we’re done with dinner, right?” Emily and Max have gone to the park all layered up and watching the sun sitting on a hill of snow they made. The sunset was odd for a winter day. The sunset was made of pink, red and orange. “I’m scared, Max,” said Emily, still looking at the sunset.” “Don’t be,” Max said. “Focus on the now. Look at the sunset, okay?” The end.

But if I don’t find the meaning, I will have to travel to the North Pole.” The lady was shocked and asked Crystal why she was looking for the

true meaning of Christmas? Crystal replied, “There are so many special things at Christmas like the gifts and the turkey, Santa, snowmen, decorations and so much more. I just want to know what the true meaning of Christmas is. The kind old lady smiled and said, “Well I will tell you. Come sit here. Once upon a time there was a penguin named Pengy that lived in the North Pole. He lived in the small igloo that was close to Santa's village. One day he decided to go get some sweet candy from the village. So he went to the village and there were so many candies to choose from! But his most favourite was the blue raspberry flavoured candy canes and he bought some. When he was in the village he saw an advertisement that read: Wanted, a penguin to help Santa on a top-secret mission! He decided to give it a try. When he got there he saw Santa in his big red chair. He almost looked like he was waiting for him. Santa said, “Thank you for coming. I hope you are ready for an adventure!” Pengy asked, “What kind of adventure?” Then, Santa said that he needed to help deliver presents this year because his elf that normally helps got electrocuted by Christmas lights, so he was in the elf hospital for a few more days and tonight was Christmas Eve. So Pengy agreed to help Santa. It was 5:00 on Christmas Eve and they were already in New York. Four hours later they were back. And in the morning Pengy woke up and he had so many presents under the tree. What an adventure!

My two holidays M A S O N

R A E

Grade five • Edgehill Elementary School Hello my name is Mason. I am ten and I am going to tell you about my really cold winter holidays. I celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah. I love the candles as bright as the sun and brightly coloured red roses. It’s my dad’s side that is Jewish. This freezing winter, I kind of think it will snow. Last year it snowed a little. It felt soft but wet and really cold. It tasted like a cold, slushy powder. Soon we will go to get a tree: a lovely Christmas tree in the woods. I love the smell of pine but I don’t like the feel of it; it feels prickly. My favourite senses of Christmas are the smelling of yummy ginger, feeling of snow, hearing jingle bells and tasting peppermint candy. But the best part of it all is the feel of love, joy and comfort. This year my auntie is going to come up from Nanaimo. This is special because I haven’t seen her since the summer. Now to talk about Hanukkah. Hanukkah is a beautiful tradition. Me and my brother sometimes get a gift. This Christmas I am asking for a new camera. And my elf gets to come on, so I am so excited! I almost forgot to tell you, I usually go looking for snow up in the mountain to go sledding. It is always so fun. I love it. These are my two holidays. Have a fun, cold, wet winter holiday.

Santa loses track of time R Y L E E

M A I R

Grade four • Westview Elementary School Not so long ago, there lived a woman named Rose and her daughters, Hazel and Fern. When December 24 came, Hazel and Fern were incredibly excited, they were practically screaming! Every year Hazel made tons of cookies for Santa, and Fern made a cedar basket and grew carrots for the reindeer. They worked busily on their gifts all day and when it was time to go to bed, Hazel and Fern got ready and snuggled into their blankets. Meanwhile, plop! Down the chimney went Santa. He popped a cookie into his mouth. “Yummy!” says Santa. Two hours later, “These little cookies are delish! Oh my, I lost track of time!” Creeeeak... Hazel opened the door and peered out.

“Santa!” she gasped. “Oh, Hazel, I’m running a bit late,” gasped Santa. “Could you do me a favour?” “Sure Santa!” Hazel answered excitedly. “Um, well, I got a little distracted. Can you help me deliver some presents?” “Yes!” Hazel exclaimed. “Just let me get my sister…Fern!” “Yes?” mumbled Fern sleepily, stumbingling into the living room. “Santa needs our help!” Hazel replied. “Ok!” said Fern. “Let’s go!” Santa said, “up up and away!” They climbed up the chimney and hopped into the sleigh. Together they delivered the presents ultra fast. They worked until the sky tinged pink as the sun rose.

Last year, at Christmas Day, Santa didn’t deliver presents to anyone in the world! People in Africa found a sled in the snow. Days later alien saucers had been spotted in New York. Military forces were stepping in for safety. Even an 11-foot zomby has been lurking in the shadows with a kid on its back! Two days later, all the presents were there. People still don’t know what happened.

Christmas Disaster A S H L A N D

B R A T S E T H

Grade four École Côte du Soleil

Once upon a time in Canada, Santa was in his sleigh. He wanted to deliver all the presents to the kids in Canada. Just then, he heard a noise, his sleigh began to tremble. Santa’s sleigh fell to the ground! The noise was so loud that two kids woke up, their names were Ashland and Nelson. They went outside and saw Santa. They said, “Santa! We're going to help you!” And they got in the sleigh.

Santa said, “Thanks for helping me.” And they took off. They delivered all the presents and then he gave the kids a ride home. He was going home but he realized that he had forgotten a present. One of the elves said, “It’s just one kid.” But Santa said, “Everyone matters, so he delivered the present. The end!

Grade four École Côte du Soleil

Once upon a time, in the woods, there was Santa. It was Christmas night. He wanted to test out his sled. But he crashed because Rudolph fell asleep. Santa was stuck in the woods on Christmas night for one hour. Finally, three elves arrived on a piece of wood. Three elves helped him to build the new sled. It was hard work but they finally made it. They helped and they helped to get it started; it wouldn’t work right away but it eventually started after four tries. The three elves asked: “Santa, can we please come with you?” “With all the help you have given me,” said Santa, “yes, of course you can come with me!” Santa thought they really had an evil look on their faces. Santa was thinking about their faces that they made. A little bit after that, the three elves tried to steal the Christmas presents. Santa said “No, give the Christmas gifts back!” They tried to jump off the sled, but Santa caught one of them. They all hooked on to each other. Santa brought them back up and they said: “We’re sorry, it’s just that all the presents looked so big, interesting and two of them smelled so good! Can we still come with you? We promise we’ll be good this time.” “Yes you can,”said Santa. “I give you one more chance.” And they delivered all the gifts. Then they went back home and had hot chocolate.

How the Donkey Described Christmas C L A I R E

S T A T H A M

Grade three Powell River Christian School

Hi, my name is Donkey. I’m going to tell you about the first Christmas a long time ago. I was Joseph’s donkey and I had to carry Mary, so we were on a trip to Bethlehem and there were lots of new smells, and it was dusty. I heard that Mary and Joseph were going to have a baby and that an angel came to her and told her she was going to have the son of God. And I also heard that Joseph had a dream that he would marry Mary and that she would have the son of God. So, when they got to Bethlehem all the hotels and the one

they booked were full. But the man said you can stay in the barn with the animals, and they said, “Yes, thank you.” So I rushed to the barn and the baby was born. And shepherds came and admired Jesus and wise men gave us gold, myrrh and frankincense, but I do not know what a baby could use that for. I heard angels singing, “Holy to God in the highest and peace on earth for all.” It startled me and it was such a special time. I was so proud to be there at that moment, that was the most beautiful thing ever.

Magic in the air G R A Y S O N

Grade three Henderson Elementary School

It was Christmas and the little boys and girls were building snowmen. Magic was in the air. Then the snowmen came alive and started dancing with the boys and girls! Then they saw Santa. All the little boys and girls ran out to see Santa, and all of a sudden Santa flew away in the sleigh. A snowstorm started blowing everything away. All of the children ran inside. They looked under the tree and saw the presents. “Now can we open the presents?” they said. “Yes,” said their mother, and then they opened the presents. And then they ate dinner and went to sleep. The end.

One time I was in bed when a portal to the snow land opened. It sucked me in! I landed smack into a pile of snow. The snow was hard. I saw a castle ahead of me. I started walking toward the castle. Then I got to the door and it creaked open. There was an evil witch! I ran down a hallway until I came to a dead end. The witch waved her wand at me. But she stepped on a trap! She died. I went back to earth. The end.

Her mom and dad surprised her with a cute brown and white puppy. She wanted to go get him toys and when she was buying the toys she re-

membered all the kids that didn’t have much food and clothes and fun toys to play with. Ayva said to her mom, “I’m going to give all my other Christmas presents to kids that need them.” Ayva’s mom said, “Let’s go.” And they did! Everyone had the happiest Christmas ever.

Grade two Westview Elementary School

One Christmas night it was windy. Santa was on his way to the kids’ houses. But the Northern Lights were too bright for him to ride in the sleigh because it was hard to see. So he tried to get back to the workshop. But on the way back he accidentally knocked into a house with a bang. So he called the elves to help Santa with his golden bell. So they went back to the workshop. They fixed the sleigh up and added some new additions. Now they went back to giving out the presents. But when they got back to the workshop, Santa checked the present bag. There was still one more present in the bag. He checked it and there was still one more present for Bree. Santa raced back to the sleigh and swung the bag behind him. Then he got to Bree’s house, swung down the chimney and put the presents under the tree. And then he went back to the house that he crashed into and fixed it up. Then when they got back to the workshop they had the greatest Christmas ever.

Then the magic came back. The little elf picked out a present. Kristy opened it. Inside was a cute, furry, pure white kitten! Kristy was dreaming of a kitten because she was very lonely. Her parents were so busy working. And she had no sister or brother. So she always wanted a kitten to play with. This is the best Christmas present ever.
