The “Self-Portraits” Project is a collective international artwork based on Argentine artist Alicia Candiani’s original idea, also developed under her direction. Between the years 2006 and 2016 Alicia was invited by nine art institutions from Argentina, Mallorca and Cuenca in Spain, Brazil, Canada, Sweden as well as Kansas City, Montclair and Anchorage, Alaska in the United States, to explore theoretically and visually the issue of self-representation.

Artists from all levels were invited to participate in the project, which has been on world tour as a traveling exhibition since 2011.

El Proyecto “Autorretratos” es una obra artística colectiva internacional realizada bajo la dirección e idea original de la artista argentina Alicia Candiani. I “Self-Portraits” is a printmaking collaborative international art project. The proposal seeks to explore self-representation by moving it away from the traditional spheres of the genre and by concentrating on self-reflection. This search attempts to focus on both the artists’ political, social and psychological concerns as well as the culture or the territory they live in. The final aim of this book is to record the first eight sessions of the project and the traveling exhibition arising from it. However, the project's nomadic essence allows it to become a never-ending process if new groups of artists and new locations are added along the way.

I “Autorretratos” es un proyecto gráfico de colaboración artística internacional que busca explorar el territorio de la auto-representación, desplazándola de la esfera tradicional del género hacia lo auto-reflexivo, haciendo énfasis tanto en las preocupaciones político-socialespsicológicas de los artistas como la cultura y el territorio que habitan.

La intención final de este libro es registrar las primeras ocho sesiones del proyecto y la exposición itinerante que derivó del mismo. Sin embargo, lejos de ser un proyecto concluido, la esencia nómade de esta propuesta le permite continuar en proceso indefinidamente, en tanto y en cuanto se sumen nuevos grupos de artistas y geografías durante su marcha.

The first nine sessions took place in Mallorca and Cuenca Spain, Argentina, Sweden, Canada, Brazil, Montclair, as well as in Anchorage and Kansas City in the United States. In them participants spontaneously explored subjects such as gender identity, race, the diaspora, emigration, discrimination, aging, illness as well as the construction of stereotypes, among others. The set of portraits arising from these encounters unfolds a puzzle of identity cutouts, as in Hanna Gustavsson's portrait (page126), which succeeds in symbolize the fluctuating identities and the ever-increasing inter-culturalism of our global world.

II Since September 2006, when the first session started, I have traveled to work with groups of artists from different origins under the format of collaborative workshops. As stated before, the aim was to conceptually explore the selfrepresentation. In simultaneous, "another" perspective for the use of the new digital techniques in the printmaking field was also explored in combination with various printing procedures, both traditional and experimental. To that end, eight prestigious art institutions hosted each one of the sessions. All of them have an important presence in their respective communities and own

Las primeras nueve sesiones se realizaron en Mallorca y Cuenca en España, Argentina, Suecia, Canadá, Brasil, Alaska, Montclair y Kansas City en Estados Unidos. En el transcurso de las mismas los participantes abordaron espontáneamente temas como la identidad genérica, la raza, la diáspora, la emigración, la discriminación, el envejecimiento, la enfermedad y la construcción de los estereotipos, entre otros. El conjunto de retratos surgidos de estos encuentros despliega un rompecabezas de recortes identitarios que, como el retrato de Hanna Gustavsson (pag 126), simboliza las identidades fluctuantes y el creciente interculturalismo de un mundo global.

II Desde septiembre del 2006, en que se realizó la primera sesión, he viajado para trabajar con grupos de artistas de diferentes lugares, bajo el formato de talleres de trabajo en colaboración. El objetivo de esos talleres fue, como se dijo anteriormente, explorar conceptualmente la auto-representación. Simultáneamente se buscó también una perspectiva “otra” del uso de los nuevos medios digitales en la gráfica,

printmaking facilities to enable the project. At the end of the workshop, participants had created a small edition of five prints, 45 cm x 45 cm each. This size could be expanded respecting the same module: 45 cm x 90 cm, 90 cm x 45 cm or 45 cm x 135 depending on the case. Of the five prints, the first one became part of the traveling exhibition, the institutions hosting the project kept the second and the remaining ones were for the participating artist. As from 2011 a collective exhibition/installation to show the pieces of the first eight sessions was organized. This large “print installation-mural” shows the ensemble of all the participants' self-portraits, including some self-portraits made by me during particular sessions, where I worked on the stereotypes that the collective imaginary have about certain places.

Up to the present, the project welcomed artists from all levels: acclaimed creators -such as Guillermo Núñez (winner of the Grand Prix in Visual Arts and former director of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Chile), established artists (Guy Langevin, Garry Kaulitz, Miguel Rivera, Enrique Leal, and Jo Ann Lanneville, among others), emerging artists (Eva Santin, Marta Sanz, Enzina Marrari, etc.) besides art students of the Kansas City Art Institute in the United States and Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha in Spain. The project also included amateur artists who participated in the Atelier Livre, a community art program for adults in Brazil. The inclusive nature of the project proposed a rainbow enriched by the geography, origin, race and the different languages and ages. So far ninety artists from twelve countries, including Germany, Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Korea, Spain, United States, Indonesia, Puerto Rico and Sweden as well as an artist belonging to the Hidatsa tribe, have participated in the project.

III The baptism of fire of the “Self-Portraits Project” was in September 2006, during the "Talleres de Obra Gráfica"1 organized every year by Fundación Pilar i Joan Miró in famous Son Boter, the artist's printmaking workshop in Palma de Mallorca. I mention this because starting the project in that location surrounded by those extraordinary Spanish artists strengthened my desire to materialize it and to see the project's outstanding future. At that moment I could not foresee that six years down the road ninety artists would come on board and that the visual production would be so vast and interesting. Nor could I imagine that in 2014 a fire would ravage Grafikens Hus’ wonderful

combinados con procedimientos de estampación tanto tradicionales como experimentales. Para esto, cada una de las sesiones fue alojada por una prestigiosa institución artística, contando todas ellas con talleres para realizar el proyecto así como también con una importante presencia en sus respectivas comunidades. Al finalizar el taller los participantes contaban con una pequeña edición de sus autorretratos en cinco ejemplares, de 45 cm x 45 cm cada uno. Esta medida podía crecer respetando el mismo módulo: 45 cm x 90 cm, 90 cm x 45 cm ó 45 cm x 135 cm según los casos. De los 5 ejemplares realizados, el primero pasó a formar parte de la exposición itinerante, el segundo ejemplar quedó en poder de las instituciones que alojaron el proyecto y los restantes permanecieron como propiedad del artista participante. A partir del año 2011 se organizó una exposición/instalación colectiva que muestra lo producido en las primeras ocho sesiones. Esta gran “instalación-mural gráfica” se dispuso poniendo en conjunto todos los autorretratos de los participantes, incluyendo los míos que realicé en algunas de las sesiones, trabajando sobre los estereotipos que el imaginario colectivo tiene sobre determinados lugares.

En lo que va del mismo, el proyecto abarcó artistas de todos los niveles: creadores consagrados (como Guillermo Núñez, Gran Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas y ex director del Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes del mismo país), artistas formados (Guy Langevin, Garry Kaulitz, Miguel Rivera, Enrique Leal, Jo Ann Lanneville, entre otros), artistas emergentes (Eva Santin, Marta Sanz, Enzina Marrari, etc), estudiantes de arte del Kansas City Art Institute en Estados Unidos y de la Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha en España y artistas amateurs que realizan el programa artístico para adultos del Atelier Livre en Brasil. La base inclusiva del mismo propone una diversidad enriquecida por la geografía, la procedencia, la raza y las diferencias, tanto lingüísticas como etarias. Así, hasta el momento, han participado 90 artistas de 12 nacionalidades incluyendo Alemania, Argentina, Australia, Canadá, Chile, Corea, España, Estados Unidos, Indonesia, Puerto Rico y Suecia además de un artista perteneciente a la tribu Hidatsa.

III Autorretratos tuvo su bautismo de fuego en septiembre de 2006, durante los “Talleres de Obra Gráfica” que organiza anualmente la Fundación Pilar i Joan Miró en el legendario Son Boter, el taller de grabado que tenía el artista en Palma de Mallorca. Menciono este hecho ya que el haber

To conclude, I would like to thank all the colleagues who co-directed or assisted in the production of "Self-Portraits", the institutions hosting it, and the participating artists and art students. I learned something from all of them and I think I also gave something to them in return. There is no need to say that the experience changed me -not only by giving me the opportunity to develop myself as an artist, to visit extreme geographies, to enjoy far-away cultures and to make new colleagues/friends- but also because it taught me to understand and respect others, to value their differences and to be amazed at the unexpected coincidences.

Tampoco me imaginé que las maravillosas instalaciones de Grafikens Hus en Suecia serían destruidas totalmente por un incendio en 2014 y que la Galería MTS que nos alojó en Anchorage ya haya cerrado sus puertas. Es tanto por todos los logros como por las pérdidas que el testimonio de este libro digital es necesario.

Finalmente, agradezco a todos los colegas que co-dirigieron o asistieron en la producción de “Autorretratos”, a las instituciones que lo alojaron, a los artistas y a los estudiantes de arte que participaron. De todos aprendí algo y creo que a todos les di algo. No hace falta decirles que la experiencia me cambió -no solamente dándome la oportunidad de desarrollarme como artista, conocer geografías extremas, saborear culturas lejanas y hacer nuevos amigos/colegas- sino porque me enseñó a entender y a respetar al otro, a valorar las diferencias y a sorprenderme por las inesperadas coincidencias.

WHO ARE YOU LOOKING AT?

You probably see your reflection several times a day, intentionally when brushing your hair, applying make-up, or shaving, or unintentionally when passing a shop window or mirror. We know ourselves only partially through our reflections, and some of us don’t trust them very much. Strange things, reflections in a mirror, and yet we tend to judge ourselves by them, if only in part. The oddest thing is that we accept almost without question that we are looking at ourselves the wrong way round - our right hand is on the left hand side of the reflection, our left hand on the right - and yet we come to learn that this is natural. Think about the celebrated ‘mirror scene’ in the Marx Brothers film, ‘Duck Soup’: the ‘mirror’ isn’t there, but the game plays out all the same. The coming of cheap and readily available digital cameras allows anyone to take the game of reflections one step further. Look at yourself in the mirror, either your head and shoulders or your full body, and then take a photograph of the reflection, and transfer it to your computer.

Then you can look at it, or play with it in a program like Photoshop and flip the image from left to right. What happens then is that you are, perhaps for the first time, able to look at an image of yourself as others see you when they look at you - your right and left hands are on the correct sides. But perhaps you will find that you look stranger than you thought you would.

You have made a self-portrait, and you can print it out as evidence of a split second in your life.

Probablemente veamos nuestro propio reflejo varias veces por día.

Intencionalmente cuando nos peinamos, maquillamos o afeitamos, o bien de manera no intencional cuando pasamos frente a una vidriera o un espejo. Nos conocemos sólo parcialmente a través de nuestros reflejos y muchos de nosotros no confiamos demasiado en ellos. Los reflejos en un espejo son cosas extrañas y sin embargo tendemos a juzgarnos por ellos, aunque sea sólo en parte. Lo más raro es que aceptamos casi sin cuestionarnos que nos estamos mirando a nosotros mismos al revés: en el reflejo, nuestra mano derecha aparece a la izquierda y la izquierda a la derecha. Sin embargo lo tomamos como algo natural. Piensen en la famosa “escena de los espejos” en “Sopa de Ganso”, la película de los Hermanos Marx. El “espejo” no está allí, pero el juego continúa sin más. El surgimiento de las cámaras digitales baratas y fáciles de manejar permite que cualquiera de nosotros lleve este juego de los reflejos un paso más allá. Miremosnos al espejo, sólo nuestros rostros y hombros o el cuerpo entero. Luego tomemos una fotografía del reflejo y descarguemosla en la computadora. Podemos observarla, jugar con ella utilizando un programa como Photoshop y dar vuelta la imagen de izquierda a derecha. Lo que sucede entonces es que podremos, tal vez por primera vez, mirar nuestra propia imagen como los otros la ven cuando nos observan: las manos, izquierda y derecha, están en el lugar correspondiente. Tal vez se vea más extraño de lo que pensabamos.

Hemos realizado un autorretrato que podemos imprimir como prueba de un instante en nuestras vidas.

Making portraits has been one of the central aims of art for millennia. Our natural curiosity as human beings leads us to wonder who we are and our natural desire for immortality requires that we should be remembered in some form, perhaps in a more idealized form than reality ever allows us.

We can achieve greatness in a portrait, or stay forever young - Oscar Wilde defined the perils of this very well in ‘The Picture of Dorian Grey’. Vanity

Nuestra curiosidad innata como seres humanos nos lleva a preguntarnos quiénes somos y nuestro deseo natural de alcanzar la inmortalidad exige que seamos recordados de alguna manera, tal vez más idealizada de lo que nos permitiría la realidad. Podemos alcanzar la grandeza en un retrato, o bien permanecer jóvenes por siempre tal como Oscar Wilde lo expresó claramente en “El retrato de Dorian Grey”.

comes into it as well: in the famous Holbein portrait of King Henry VIII we see a magnificent figure of a man, richly attired, strong and dominant… but we don’t smell the putrefying ulcers on his legs or see his decayed teeth. It is by that portrait that he is remembered and will be remembered in time to come: a sort of immortality, a false image. Or is it? What might we mean by ‘false’ if it is as real as the sitter wished it to be?

The making of self-portraits is another thing entirely, one that demands a different sort of attention from an artist. It needs self-awareness, selfknowing and perhaps a degree of narcissism, of obsession. Rembrandt is famous for his self-portraits, so is Van Gogh. Lucian Freud reached deeper into himself than many artists ever do when making the succession of self-portraits that punctuated his extensive output. We come to know the artist through such self-portraits, or we like to think we do. We speak of them having a deep humanity, or a psychological depth, or as revealing the artist’s soul like the peeling back of the layers of an onion. Think about Albrecht Dürer and his self-portraits: his image of himself as some sort of idealized Christ figure is magnificent - but how presumptuous! Not so well known, but far more penetrating, is his nude self-portrait drawing, perhaps the most powerfully honest of any portraits from any period of time. The image we see is a partial one, limbs are incomplete. Dürer clearly made the drawing of himself standing naked, peering into a mirror. He is unflinching in the honesty with which he portrays his male-ness. Some people find it embarrassing to look at: it has even, astonishingly, been called obscene. But it is mostly about the eyes: it is the eyes that regard us all these centuries later, staring at us unblinkingly across time. Dürer is telling us, ‘Look at me, naked, unashamed - I lived and looked and recorded what I saw, and I gaze at you with curiosity’. Unnerving, but magnificent. Anyone can now make a nude self-portrait such as this through the simple means of a digital photo of their reflection in a mirror, but few probably consider doing it, and some would consider it taboo. If attempted it would create a closed digital loop in which the person taking the photo is both the subject and object within the image. A strange self-knowing.

La vanidad también juega un papel importante: en el famoso retrato del Rey Enrique VIII pintado por Holbein vemos la imponente figura de un hombre, con lujosos atuendos, de porte fuerte y dominante… pero no olemos las úlceras putrefactas en sus piernas, ni vemos su dentadura deteriorada. De hecho lo recordamos por ese retrato y lo seguiremos haciendo así en el futuro: una suerte de inmortalidad, de falsa imagen. ¿Es así? ¿Qué queremos decir con “falso” si es tan real como el modelo quiso que lo fuera?

La realización de autorretratos es algo completamente diferente que requiere otro tipo de atención por parte del artista que necesita autoconciencia, autoconocimiento y, tal vez, un cierto grado de narcisismo, de obsesión. Rembrandt es famoso por sus autorretratos, al igual que Van Gogh. Lucian Freud hurgó mucho más profundo en su ser, más de lo que muchos artistas jamás lo hicieron, cuando realizó una serie de autorretratos a lo largo de su vasta producción. Llegamos a conocer al artista a través de dichos autorretratos, o nos encanta pensar que los conocemos. Hablamos de ellos y afirmamos que tienen una humanidad o psicología profundas, o que el alma del artista aparece de a poco, como cuando pelamos las capas de una cebolla. Piensen en Alberto Durero y sus autorretratos: la imagen de sí mismo como una suerte de figura idealizada de Cristo se nos revela magnífica, ¡pero qué atrevimiento! No tan conocido, pero sí mucho más potente es su autorretrato desnudo en lápiz, que tal vez sea el más honesto de todos los retratos de cualquier época. La imagen que vemos es parcial, los miembros están incompletos.

Durero claramente realizó el dibujo de sí mismo de pie, mirando su reflejo en un espejo. Es absolutamente honesto en el retrato de su masculinidad. Hay quienes se sienten incómodos al observarlo: hasta se lo ha llegado a considerar obsceno. Todo se centra en sus ojos: son los ojos los que nos miran a todos nosotros, desde hace siglos, que clavan la vista sin titubeos a pesar del transcurso del tiempo. Durero nos dice: “obsérvenme, desnudo, sin vergüenza. Viví, observé y registré lo que vi, y ahora los observo a ustedes con curiosidad”. Desconcertante y al mismo tiempo magnífico. Hoy cualquiera podría hacer un autorretrato desnudo como este mediante algo tan simple como una foto digital de nuestro reflejo en un espejo, sin embargo pocos pensarían en hacerlo, y algunos hasta lo considerarían tabú. Si se hiciera el esfuerzo, se crearía una imagen digital sin fin en donde la persona que toma la foto es al mismo tiempo el sujeto y el objeto dentro de la imagen. Un extraño autoconocimiento.

Alicia Candiani devised the self-portrait project that is the subject of this book/catalog. Between 2006 and 2011 she conducted workshops in eight locations across the world, including Mallorca and Cuenca in Spain, Buenos Aires in Argentina, Mariefred in Sweden, Porto Alegre in Brazil, Anchorage, Alaska and Kansas City in the USA. A wide range of artists, working in a wide range of mediums, was invited to attend workshops. As a result, 90 participants created a self-portrait print. In this project the medium chosen was printmaking, since it fitted well within the concept of the workshops and the materials and tools to hand. In an ever-widening international art world there is now far less differentiation between mediums, and many artists will choose to use whatever medium suits best the ideas they have and the intended outcome of the work. Such a diversity of approach, medium and outcome has created a marvelously rich contemporary art world, full of challenges and responses, with wide international appeal.

Entre 2006 y 2011, Alicia Candiani concibió el Proyecto Autorretratos, que es el tema del presente libro/catálogo, organizando talleres de creación en ocho lugares del mundo: Mallorca y Cuenca en España, Buenos Aires en Argentina, Mariefred en Suecia, Porto Alegre en Brasil, Anchorage, Alaska y Kansas City en los Estados Unidos. Un gran número de artistas, que trabajaron en una amplia selección de técnicas, fueron invitados a participar de los talleres. Como resultado, noventa participantes crearon su autorretrato. En este proyecto el medio elegido fue la gráfica, ya que se adaptaba bien al concepto de los talleres y a los materiales y herramientas a disposición. En el mundo del arte internacional en constante expansión, hoy en día existe poca diferencia entre las disciplinas y muchos artistas elijen utilizar la técnica que les es más adecuada para materializar sus ideas y así lograr el resultado que esperan de su trabajo. Dicha diversidad de abordajes, disciplinas y resultados desembocó en un arte contemporáneo decididamente rico, lleno de desafíos y de respuestas, y además con un gran atractivo internacional.

When you read this digital book and study the images, or when look at the exhibition if it comes your way, you will find a world of rich ideas and possibilities, executed in an amazing variety of mediums, presented in a wide range of ways, and divided into a nine thematic groupings. For all this richness and diversity, not to mention the high levels of imaginative, technical and contextual skills that are presented, what you are looking at is a very small sample of work by an equally small cross-section of contemporary artists from many parts of the world who came together in a shared endeavor. It is impossible to guess the exact total number of hard-working artists in the world who make and share work in whatever mediums they choose, but it is certainly a very large number. In turn this means that what you are looking at is completely remarkable, something that has never been done before, which would be difficult to repeat, and yet which contains the potential of being continued and extended in any country in the world, in ways that are probably limitless. That is a very bold claim, but is nonetheless true.

THREE The basic format for the works in the exhibition is digital print on paper, 45 x 45cm. The rigor this gives provides as strength and cohesion to the whole.

Cuando lean este libro digital y estudien las imágenes, o cuando observen la exposición, encontrarán una gran variedad de fructíferas ideas y posibilidades, ejecutadas en una sorprendente multiplicidad de medios, presentada usando diversas técnicas y dividida en nueve grupos temáticos. Sin embargo, lo que miramos de toda esta riqueza y diversidad -sin mencionar el alto nivel de recursos técnicos, conceptuales e imaginativos presentados- corresponde sólo a una muy pequeña parte del trabajo realizado por un igualmente pequeño grupo de artistas contemporáneos, provenientes de diversas partes del mundo, que se aunaron en un proyecto compartido. Resulta imposible adivinar la cantidad exacta alrededor del mundo de laboriosos artistas que realizan y comparten sus trabajos en los que utilizan las técnicas de su elección, sin embargo sabemos que el número es muy alto. A su vez esto significa que lo que estamos observando es absolutamente único, algo que nunca se hizo antes, que sería difícil repetir pero que tiene la capacidad de poder continuarse en cualquier país del mundo, de maneras que tal vez no tengan límites. Se trata de una aseveración muy audaz; sin embargo es verdad.

However, because artists are highly idiosyncratic people, there are variations: some have incorporated other print mediums, some have used the basic dimensions as a module, doubling, or even case trebling, the format, and some have extended the medium into three dimensions on unconventional surfaces. All this is to be welcomed, because printmaking techniques have a long and honourable history of evolution that has come about because someone broke the rules - a creative anarchy if you will. The choice of digital is interesting, partly because it is now capable of extraordinary variation and partly because it is still, despite all the clear evidence to the contrary, seen by some traditionalists in the printmaking world as being anathema, well beyond the limits of acceptability in conventional circles, and tantamount to commercial art! But the pervasiveness of digital technology in the contemporary world, and the essentially democratic factors of price and availability, makes it one of the fastest growing methods of making art.

There is, it must be admitted, quite a lot of digital imaging (‘art’ if you wish to stretch the definition) that is really not that good. On the other hand, as this book and the exhibitions from which it has grown prove beyond any doubt, digital image-making technology is capable of producing wonderful works, with very high levels of imagination and technical skill, which carry powerful creative and emotional resonances. Digital imaging is now firmly established, and will not disappear. Instead, as the pace of technological innovation continues to increase, it will continue to evolve into new and exciting forms capable of producing extraordinary results. At the same time, the time-honoured traditional methods will continue to be used by succeeding generations of young artists who will discover for themselves the excitement in using a continuum of techniques that extend back 4000 years or more in time and will extend far into the future. And the wonderful thing is that digital printmaking allows the creation of as few, or as many, examples as the artist wishes to include in the edition, creating anything from a single unique image to an edition without limit. A print can be the equivalent of a cherished original painting, offered for sale at a high price, or a large edition made cheaply available to many people, or anything in between. Digital prints can be transmitted electronically, shared with others anywhere in the world with an Internet connection, swapped, exchanged or given freely, across land borders and oceans. This is what this digital book is doing.

Pero, dado que los artistas tienen ideas muy peculiares, existen variaciones: algunos incorporaron otras técnicas gráficas o utilizaron las dimensiones básicas como un módulo, duplicando o a veces triplicando su formato, y otros incluso forzaron la técnica para llevarla a tres dimensiones sobre superficies no convencionales. Todo ello es bienvenido debido a que las diferentes técnicas de la gráfica cuentan con una extensa y honrosa historia de evolución, que surgió gracias a que a alguien se le ocurrió romper las reglas -llamémosle anarquía creativa, si así lo prefieren. La elección de soporte digital resulta interesante, en parte porque se puede lograr una variación extraordinaria, en parte porque aún hoy, a pesar de todas las evidencias que apuntan a lo contrario, es considerado por algunos tradicionalistas en el mundo de la gráfica como un anatema, algo que va más allá de los límites de lo aceptable dentro de los círculos convencionales. ¡Lo que equivaldría al arte comercial! Sin embargo la omnipresencia de la tecnología digital en el mundo contemporáneo y los factores esencialmente democráticos de precio y disponibilidad hacen de ella uno de los métodos de mayor desarrollo en la creación artística. Existe, lo debemos admitir, una gran cantidad de imágenes digitales (“arte digital” si desean extender la definición) que en verdad no resultan tan buenas. Por otra parte, como este libro y las obras que le dieron origen lo demuestran, con las tecnologías usadas para la creación de imágenes digitales se pueden producir obras maravillosas, imaginativas y con altos niveles de habilidad técnica, con fuertes resonancias creativas y emocionales.

La imagen digital se ha establecido con firmeza y no desaparecerá. Por el contrario, a medida que el ritmo de la innovación tecnológica sigue en aumento, las obras continuarán evolucionando y darán nacimiento a nuevas formas con resultados extraordinarios. Al mismo tiempo, los métodos tradicionales históricamente establecidos seguirán siendo usados por artistas jóvenes, que descubrirán por sí solos el entusiasmo de utilizar un continuo de técnicas que se remontan a 4000 años o más en el tiempo y que se prolongarán sin dudas hacia el futuro. Y lo maravilloso es que la impresión digital permite la creación de pocas o tantas copias como el artista desee incluir en la edición, creando así una imagen única o una serie ilimitada. Una impresión puede ser el equivalente a una pintura original muy preciada que se vende a un precio elevado, o una gran edición de bajo costo y accesible para muchas personas, o cualquier otra situación entre ambas. Las imágenes digitales se pueden transmitir electrónicamente o compartir con quienes tengan conexión a Internet en cualquier parte del mundo. También se pueden intercambiar o regalar, cruzando fronteras u océanos. Esto es lo que este libro digital está haciendo.

We live in challenging times; sometimes it seems at the edge of destruction.

But while artists around the world are embracing printmaking in increasing numbers, producing results that continue to astonish and surprise even those of us who have worked with printmaking for many years, there is every reason for being optimistic. It is always better to talk to people than to talk about them: the contemporary visual arts, in all their guises and forms, are uniquely positioned to do just that, and the developing conversations are encouraging.

Vivimos en tiempos de desafíos, y a veces, según parece, al borde de la destrucción. Mientras existan artistas alrededor del mundo que se vuelquen a la gráfica en números cada vez más importantes, produciendo resultados que sigan asombrándonos y fascinándonos, aún a nosotros, que nos hemos desempeñado en esa disciplina durante largo tiempo, existirán numerosas razones para ser optimistas. Siempre es mejor hablar a las personas que hablar sobre ellas: las artes visuales contemporáneas, en todas sus formas y expresiones, gozan de un posicionamiento único para hacerlo, alentando el desarrollo de estos diálogos.

The Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation in Mallorca was founded in 1981 following the donation by Joan Miró and his family to the City of Palma of the four studios where the artist worked intensely since 1956. The Miro´s aim was to foster future generations of creators. Miró expressed his desire to keep the spirit of creativity and transgression alive way beyond his death. This vision could be materialized in Son Boter. Year after year this privileged location welcomes both young and established artists who develop projects, transmit ideas and share creative experiences.

Following these goals the Pilar i Joan Miró Foundation has enabled the work of various artists in its intaglio, lithography, silkscreen, ceramics and photography workshops. Recently the Foundation opened up to new technologies and included projects using digital printing systems. In line with this, the Foundation was the first one to receive the Self-Portraits Project, which was set within the framework of the “Talleres de Obra Gráfica”1, a summer program, receiving artists from all parts of Spain and some from abroad. In this unique setting the project took advantage of the new digital printing equipment. The digital prints where then combined with traditional silkscreen, monotype and planography in the etching workshop.

This session received Spanish artists, photographers and graphic designers coming from Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona, Madrid and Oviedo. Among them were Marta Sanz, Eva Santín Álvarez and Sergio del Río Diez. These young artists were awarded at the “Certamen de Arte Gráfico para Jóvenes Creadores 2005”2, organized by the Calcografía Nacional and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. As part of the award they received a grant to travel and profit from this workshop. Manuela Muñoz, a professional photographer specializing in architecture and landscape, whose photographs honor the design of this book, also joined the group.

La Fundación Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca se creó a partir de la donación que hicieron Joan Miró y su familia a la Ciudad de Palma en 1981 de los cuatro talleres artísticos en los que el artista había trabajado intensamente desde 1956, con el propósito de convertirlos en un estímulo para futuras generaciones de creadores. Miró expresó su deseo de mantener vivo el espíritu de creatividad y transgresión más allá de su muerte, y esta ilusión pudo hacerse realidad en Son Boter. Año tras año, en este escenario tan privilegiado, artistas jóvenes y otros más consagrados desarrollan proyectos, transmiten ideas y comparten experiencias creativas.

Con estos objetivos la Fundación Pilar i Joan Miró ha posibilitado el trabajo de numerosos artistas en sus talleres de intaglio, litografía, serigrafía, cerámica y fotografía, y recientemente, se ha abierto a las nuevas tecnologías y ha incorporado proyectos con sistemas de impresión digital. Acorde con lo último, esta institución fue la primera que recibió el Proyecto Autorretratos. El mismo estuvo encuadrado dentro de los “Talleres de Obra Gráfica”, un programa que se desarrolla durante los meses de verano recibiendo artistas de todas partes de España y algunos del exterior. En este entorno único se tomó ventaja del nuevo equipamiento de impresión digital. Las impresiones digitales fueron luego combinadas con serigrafía, monotipia y técnicas planográficas realizadas en el taller de aguafuerte.

Esta sesión recibió artistas, fotógrafos y diseñadores gráficos españoles que provenían de Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona, Madrid y Oviedo. Entre ellos se encontraban Marta Sanz, Eva Santín Álvarez y Sergio del Río Diez.

Estos jóvenes artistas, fueron premiados en la exposición “Certamen de Arte Gráfico para Jóvenes Creadores” organizado por la Calcografía Nacional en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando en Madrid, recibiendo una beca para viajar y tomar este taller. Manuela

representation. Her intense self-portrait opens Chapter 1. Minimalistic yet outspoken, the artist defines herself through her photographer’s eye, while it reflects the Mallorca landscape.

If I have to find a common denominator I would say that this was the session centered on the language concerns pushing the limits of the concept. In a time when we were still experimenting with digital images, we worked intensely shifting from analog to digital image or with the creation starting directly from digital images. In particular, some artists used the language as a metaphor, or the other way around, a metaphor of the language in the different art media (audiovisual or pictorial) as a way to express either the geographical migration or the migration of artistic techniques. This is the case of Paz Alcoverro, whose face is filtered through the communication media: a broken down TV and a newspaper informing nothing. Or Rosemary Marchetta, a US born artist from Italian parents married to a German and living in Spain who invented a pidgin language with illegible characters to express the cultural mixes in her head.

To conclude, I cannot be silent about the spirit of the Mediterranean and its outstanding beauty, which flooded the workshop. The innate joy of Spaniards, the cloudless blue sky, the flavor of the dishes we shared, the seamless coexistence from dawn to dusk for 15 days and the creative presence of Miró (which literally and metaphorically permeated Son Boter walls) made from this first meeting an unforgettable personal and artistic experience.

Muñoz -una fotógrafa profesional especializada en arquitectura y paisaje, cuyas fotos han contribuido al diseño de este libro- también se sumó al grupo. Sorprendentemente, ella nunca había encarado el tema de la figura humana y mucho menos el de la auto-representación. Su intenso autorretrato abre el Capítulo 1. Minimalista y a la vez elocuente, la artista se define través de su ojo de fotógrafa que refleja el paisaje de Mallorca.

Si buscara un denominador común diría que esta fue la sesión de las preocupaciones del lenguaje, extendiendo este concepto al límite. En un momento en que todavía estábamos experimentado con las imágenes digitales, se trabajó mucho con el traspaso de la imagen analógica a la digital o con la creación directamente en este último medio. En términos particulares algunos artistas usaron el lenguaje como una metáfora, o viceversa, una metáfora del lenguaje de distintos medios (audiovisuales o pictóricos), como una manera de expresar la emigración geográfica o de prácticas artísticas. Este es el caso de Paz Alcoverro cuyo rostro se encuentra filtrado por los medios de comunicación: una TV descompuesta y un periódico que no informa nada o Rosemary Marchetta –una artista nacida en Estados Unidos de padres italianos, casada con un alemán y viviendo en España- que inventa una lengua pidgin de caracteres ilegibles para expresar esa mezcla de culturas en su cabeza.

Por último, no puedo dejar de decir que el espíritu del Mediterráneo y su increíble belleza se filtró en este taller. La alegría innata de los españoles, el cielo azulísimo, el sabor de la comida compartida, la convivencia armoniosa desde la mañana y hasta entrada la noche durante quince días y el hálito creativo de Miró (que impregnaba literal y metafóricamente las paredes de Son Boter) hicieron de este primer encuentro una experiencia artística y personal imposible de olvidar.

The School of Fine Arts of Cuenca at the Castilla-La Mancha University in Spain hosted the second session of the project. This young academic center was created in 1986 to reflect a totally new and pioneering spirit within an education context that needed to adjust to new artistic transformations.

Relevant figures of the Spanish art, such as Luis Gordillo, Lucio Muñoz and Antonio López provided advise to the University and materialized a new method to teach Fine Arts within the university environment and the programs existing in Spain at that time. The development of this new teaching concept privileged the inclusion of new forms and art practices, fostering interdisciplinary exchanges and experimentation. The University also hosts the International Museum of Electrography -a space specialized in electrographic art, electronic art, as well as infographic, multimedia and Net.art creations. In the early 90’s, this place already spearheaded the experimentation field using new image reproduction techniques.

Moreover, the Foundation “Antonio Pérez” and the “Museo de Obra Gráfica de San Clemente” 1, are also located in the surrounding, contributing to state Cuenca fertile grounds for the work on paper.

La Facultad de Bellas Artes de Cuenca de la Universidad de Castilla–La Mancha en España alojó la 2da sesión del proyecto. Este es un centro académico muy joven que nació en 1986 con un espíritu totalmente nuevo y pionero dentro de un contexto universitario en el que había que adaptarse a las transformaciones artísticas. Relevantes figuras del arte español como, entre otros, Luis Gordillo, Lucio Muñoz y Antonio López, asesoraron a la universidad e hicieron posible la concepción de un modelo nuevo de enseñanza universitaria de las Bellas Artes dentro de los ya existentes en ese momento en España. En el desarrollo de este nuevo concepto de enseñanza universitaria primaron la inclusión de nuevas formas y prácticas artísticas, la interdisciplinariedad y la vocación experimental. La Universidad alberga también el Museo Internacional de Electrografía -un espacio especializado en arte electrográfico, electrónico, creaciones infográficas, multimedia y Net.art.- que ya había abierto una puerta muy ancha para la experimentación con los nuevos medios de reproducción de la imagen desde principios de los 90.

Además en el área se encuentra la “Fundación Antonio Pérez “y el “Museo de Obra Gráfica de San Clemente” contribuyendo a definir a Cuenca como

In this context, Self-Portraits was a seminar I offered to college students and graduated students. They were from Cuenca or were residing there during their studies. The second session ran smoothly because this academic environment had been experimenting with new technologies for a long time and the goals of the workshop were in line with those of the university.

The young students had knowledge of the digital techniques; in fact they grew with them. In addition, they were immersed in an environment that encouraged to explore these techniques -this was no hurdle to be overcome-.

Here we needed to work focused more on the image than on the technique, since students were in the process of creating their personal images. In this

En este contexto, Autorretratos fue un seminario que impartí para los estudiantes de grado y algunos de postgrado que eran de Cuenca o vivían en la ciudad porque estaban estudiando allí. La 2da sesión se desarrolló fluidamente ya que este ámbito académico había estado experimentando desde hacia tiempo con las nuevas tecnologías y los objetivos del taller se alineaban con los de la facultad. Los jóvenes tenían conocimiento de los medios digitales, habían crecido con ellos y estaban en un lugar en que se los alentaba a explorarlos, por lo que esto

María pixelates her image twice: visually and physically, and dares to break the bi-dimensionality with a piece where volume is added to the content. Oscar proposed play on word with the name of the famous LIFE magazine, the word “life” and his naked body in the empty space left by the Twin Towers after they collapsed. Both the digital technique and the conceptual construction are solid. Cuenca was one of the places where the Tribunal of the Holy Inquisition was the bloodiest and this piece seems to remind us that religious fanaticism is not behind us and continues to cause disasters along history.

no representó un obstáculo a superar. Aquí se tuvo que trabajar más con la imagen que con la técnica, ya que los estudiantes estaban justamente dentro del proceso de formación de la imagen personal. En este conjunto se destacan los autorretratos de María Valvanera y de Oscar Sánchez Yanel, los dos estudiantes de doctorado que participaron del seminario.

María pixela su imagen dos veces: visualmente y físicamente y se anima a romper la bidimensionalidad con una obra que gana en contenido con el volumen. Oscar realiza un juego de palabras entre el nombre de la conocida revista LIFE, la palabra “life” (vida en inglés) y su cuerpo desnudo en el hueco que dejaron las Torres Gemelas luego de su caída.

Ambas, la técnica digital y la construcción conceptual son sólidas. Cuenca fue uno de los lugares en que el Tribunal de la Santa Inquisición fue más sangriento y esta obra parece recordarnos que el fanatismo religioso no está superado y ha seguido provocando desastres a lo largo de la historia.

Proyecto´ace hosted the Self-Portraits 3rd session in the winter of 2007.

Located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this Artist-in-Residence International Program aims to support contemporary visual art practices promoting exchange, debate, experimentation and collaborative work. The program focuses on expanded field visual art practices, with a special interest in contemporary artistic proposals that involve traditional and innovative printmaking, photography, design and new media, exploring their reproducible capacity as well as their mirror influences. For 10 years It has been active as driving force enabling artistic and cultural connection networks at home and abroad.

In this context, the project grew into an international workshop: an open call invited willing artists to participate. The final selection resulted in a session composed only by women artists (since Alexander Squier joined later) coming from Spain, Mexico, Australia and various locations in Argentina -the cities of La Plata, Bolivar, Adrogué, Salta and Buenos Aires.

They worked “in residence” during 15 days at Proyecto’ace, addressing self-representation in the arts and creating self-portraits of their own. In spite of working in a megalopolis offering all kinds of cultural and touristic attractions –maybe because it was winter, maybe because we were all women and we found many things to share- this meeting went by indoors favoring an introspective environment. In the resulting pieces, the female condition appears not as a need to define the sexual identity but as a reflection on itself and its different nuances. The pieces show both Pathos and Eros. They also show childhood memories and the need to provide a mother’s care to others, including the mother earth: Pachamama, the female figure par excellence in the cosmogony of South American native cultures.

Proyecto’ace acogió la tercera sesión de Autorretratos en el invierno de 2007. Situado en Buenos Aires, Argentina, este Programa Internacional de Residencias Artísticas tiene como objetivo apoyar, en el campo de las artes visuales, las prácticas artísticas contemporáneas que promuevan el intercambio, el debate, la experimentación y el trabajo en colaboración.

El programa se centra en las prácticas de campo expandido, con un especial interés en las propuestas artísticas contemporáneas que involucren la gráfica tradicional y experimental, la fotografía, el diseño y los nuevos medios digitales, explorando su capacidad de reproducción y sus mutuas interferencias. Durante 10 años el programa ha estado activo como una fuerza potenciadora de redes de conexión artísticas y culturales en el país y en el extranjero.

En este contexto, el proyecto tomó el formato de un taller internacional en el que se invitaron artistas a participar mediante una convocatoria abierta. La selección final resultó en una sesión conformada sólo por artistas mujeres (ya que Alexander Squier realiza su obra posteriormente) que provenían de España, México, Australia y diversas ciudades de Argentina: La Plata, Bolívar, Adrogué, Salta y la ciudad de Buenos Aires.

Las mismas estuvieron en residencia en ´ace dedicadas durante 15 días a discutir acerca de la auto-representación en el arte y a elaborar sus autorretratos. A pesar de estar trabajando en una megalópolis que ofrece todo tipo de atracciones culturales y turísticas –quizás porque era invierno, quizás porque éramos todas mujeres y encontramos que teníamos mucho que compartir- este encuentro transcurrió puertas adentro, predominando un ambiente de introspección. En las obras finales la condición femenina aparece no como una necesidad de definición de identidad sexual sino como una reflexión sobre sí misma y sus diferentes facetas. En las obras se manifiesta tanto el Pathos como el Eros, los recuerdos de la infancia y la necesidad de dar protección como madres, incluyendo a la madre tierra, la Pachamama, figura femenina por excelencia en la cosmogonía de la cultura aborigen sudamericana.

Grafikens Hus Mariefred, Sweden | Mariefred, Suecia 2007 | October-November Octubre-Noviembre

Mariefred, Sweden has a population of less than 4,000 inhabitants, but in spite of that it enjoys the privilege of having a city status due to historical reasons. Its major monument is Gripsholm Castle, an awesome Renaissance construction dating back to the 16th century. It also hosts the vast National Collection of Portraits of Sweden. Grafikens Hus, a center for contemporary printmaking -located in the former barn of the royal castle- received the project in this country. Back then the wonderful facilities comprised 1,500 square meters on two levels and included exhibition rooms, a wellequipped printmaking workshop, a library, conference rooms, a shop and a cafe.

I came to Grafikens Hus thanks to the printmaking world networking. A review of my work in Richard Noyce’s book “Printmaking in the Edge”. Later the inclusion of a piece in the portfolio “Further” (arising from it) resulted in an invitation to participate in the Falun Print Triennial in Dalarna, a historical province in central Sweden. In turn, some artists from the ones invited to the triennial, were offered to participate in related exhibitions.

My pieces were then included in an exhibition in the Grafikens Hus’ gallery, which led to the possibility of organizing, in parallel with the show, a new edition of the Self-Portrait Project in the year 2007.

escasa población y por razones históricas, tiene privilegio de ser llamada ciudad. Su principal monumento es el Castillo de Gripsholm, una espléndida obra renacentista del siglo XVI que además alberga la vasta Colección Nacional de Retratos de Suecia. Grafikens Hus, un centro de gráfica contemporánea que estaba localizado en el antiguo granero real enfrente del castillo, recibió el proyecto en este país. En ese momento las fabulosas instalaciones albergaban 1500 m2 en dos plantas e incluían salas de exposición, un taller gráfico muy bien equipado, biblioteca, salas de conferencia, tienda y cafetería.

As in Mallorca and Cuenca, I found myself in an inspiring place. A vast collection of portrait paintings was available by just crossing the bridge over the lake separating us from the castle. With the exception of Lars Yeudakimchikov, the workshop director who lived in Mariefred, there were no local artists. Participants had been previously selected and invited to join the session. From Stockholm and some other locations in Sweden they came to work on this project. In the practice this situation turned the experience into an “art residency” rather than merely attending a workshop.

Not only the building was affected: a oneof-a-kind collection of prints and work on paper created by national and international artists was also destroyed. However, Grafikens Hus, which has been in existence since 1996, is not a building but a concept and thanks to the cooperation of many it remains active in a new location in Mariefred.

Atelier Presse Papier Trois Rivières, Canada 2008 | October Octubre

The Atelier Presse Papier was founded in the city of Trois-Rivières by the Saint Lawrence River, a landscape and historical landmark of the region. Situated in the Province of Québec, Canada’s the French-speaking area, Presse Papier is a self-run artist center dedicated to contemporary printmaking. Since 1979 it offers professional artists a suitable production space conducive to investigation, creation and outreach. The institution is recognized for the quality of the works of its members and for the professionalism of its events. The international activity of Presse Papier allows the realization of important projects, which benefit both its members and the artists around the world.

El Atelier Presse Papier fue fundado en la ciudad de Trois-Rivières a orilla del río Saint-Laurent, una marca paisajística e histórica importante para la región. Localizado en la Provincia de Quebec, que pertenece al área franco parlante de Canadá, Presse Papier es un centro de artistas auto-gestionado dedicado a la gráfica contemporánea. Desde 1979 ofrece a artistas profesionales un lugar de producción propicio para la investigación, la creación y la difusión. La institución es reconocida por la calidad de la obra de sus miembros tanto como por el profesionalismo de sus eventos. La actividad internacional de Presse Papier permite la realización de importantes proyectos que benefician tanto a sus miembros como artistas de todo el mundo.

To say that the project in this Canadian space was originated in Germany is a contradiction. However it is true: it happened in an informal meeting with artist Guy Langevin in the city of Darmstadt, near Frankfurt. Guy, an established artist, was awarded a residence at the Department of Type Casting and Printing of the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Darmstadt while I was putting up an installation in a greenhouse for the Contemporary Art Biennial Vogelfrei VII. We soon discovered that we were around. Eight years had gone by since my participation at the “Biennale internationale d’estampe contemporaine de Trois-Rivières”1, which gave me the opportunity of an art residency at the Atelier Presse Papier. Langevin was a maker of both spaces (the atelier and the biennial) and had been one of my hosts. What started as an informal meeting between two colleagues in the living room of curator Ute Richell’s house ended up with a proposal that Guy took back to Atelier Presse Papier. This came to fruition the following year with the organization of the Fifth edition of Self-Portraits in 2008.

Es un contrasentido decir que la realización del proyecto en este espacio de Canadá se gestó en Alemania. Pero fue así, en un encuentro casual con el artista Guy Langevin en la ciudad de Darmstadt, cerca de Frankfurt. Guy, artista de larga trayectoria, había viajado para hacer una residencia en el Departamento de Tipografía e Impresión del Hessisches Landesmuseum. Yo estaba montando una instalación en un invernadero dentro de la Bienal de Arte Contemporáneo Vogelfrei VII, por lo que rápidamente terminamos sabiendo el uno que el otro estaba en el mismo lugar. Habían pasado ocho años de mi participación en la “Biennale internationale d’estampe contemporaine de Trois-Rivières”1 que me diera la oportunidad de realizar una residencia artística en el Atelier Presse Papier. Langevin fue miembro iniciador de ambos espacios (el atelier y la bienal) y había sido uno de mis anfitriones. Lo que empezó como un encuentro informal entre dos colegas, en el living de la casa

On a personal level, returning to Presse Papier was like going back home. I knew the workshop and most of the artists, some of whom have indeed visited me in Buenos Aires. Along the years since my first visit, the membership was enriched by the presence of young artists providing dynamism to the group. All participants lived in Trois Rivières, were professional artists, knew the techniques we used and participated as active members of this space. This meeting gave us the possibility of enjoying the collaborative work. As in the case of Spain and Sweden, yet for different reasons, this session resulted in a body of work of the highest quality. The extreme weather conditions and the Saint-Lawrence River appear in many of the self-portraits. Snow is shown in Aline Beaudoin’s and Isabelle Clermont’s pieces. The river (“la fleuve” )2 is present in mine and in Elisabeth Mathieu’s self-portrait, which summarizes the project: the artist with her white face-world, swirled by a river, which allows the endless navigation of a small tri-dimensional ship.

En lo personal, regresar a Presse Papier fue como volver a casa. Conocía el taller y la mayoría de los artistas, algunos de los cuales, luego de mi residencia, me habían visitado en Buenos Aires. En los años transcurridos desde mi primera visita la membresía se había enriquecido con artistas más jóvenes que le daban dinamismo al grupo. Todos los participantes vivían en Trois Rivières, eran artistas profesionales, conocían las técnicas en las que estábamos trabajando y participaban como miembros activos de este espacio, por lo que el encuentro nos dio la posibilidad de disfrutar del trabajo en colaboración. Como la de España y Suecia, pero por distintas razones, esta sesión dio como resultado un cuerpo de obra de gran calidad. Las condiciones climáticas extremas y el río Saint-Laurent aparecen en muchos de los autorretratos. La nieve se muestra en la obra de Aline Beaudoin y de Isabelle de Clermont. El río (“la fleuve”)2 está presente en la mía y en el autorretrato de Elisabeth Mathieu, que resume el proyecto: la artista con la cara-mundo blanca cruzada por un rio arremolinado que permite la navegación sin fin de un barquito tridimensional.

Atelier Livre & 23º FESTIVAL DE ARTES CIDADE DE PORTO ALEGRE Porto Alegre, Brazil | Brasil 2009 | July Julio

The Atelier Livre of Porto Alegre city is an institution with a fifty-year history devoted to the Visual Arts production and teaching. Conceived as a space to think and to produce in the field of visual arts, this entity contributed significantly towards the development of artists and audiences within its community as well as nationally. Since 1986 Atelier Livre organizes the “Festival de Arte Cidade de Porto Alegre” and invites artists to teach in technical and theoretical workshops, which also brings about opportunities to exchange experiences among local and foreign artists and institutions.

The invitation to lead one of the workshops within the context of the festival in the southern winter of 2009 gave me the opportunity to carry out the sixth session of Self-Portraits. Co-directed by Mara Caruso -an artist, a passionate instructor and a pillar of the atelier for many years- this meeting benefitted from a very inspiring context. It took place in parallel with other projects by other visiting artists from Brazil, Argentina and Spain. Workshops, exhibitions and “palestras”1 flowed one into the next.

We all tried to make most of these exchanges, wh≠ ich broadened our experience and the interrelation among participants.

El Atelier Livre de la Prefectura de Porto Alegre es una institución municipal con más de cincuenta años dedicados a la producción y la enseñanza de las Artes Visuales. Concebido como un espacio para pensar y producir en el campo de las artes visuales, esta entidad ha contribuido significativamente a la formación de artistas y un público especializado en su comunidad. Desde el año 1986 el Atelier Livre lleva adelante el “Festival de Arte Cidade de Porto Alegre”, invitando a artistas a dictar talleres prácticos y teóricos, lo que también proporciona oportunidades para el intercambio de experiencias entre artistas e instituciones a nivel nacional e internacional.

La invitación a dirigir un taller en el contexto del festival en el invierno de 2009, me dio la oportunidad de realizar la 6º sesión de Autorretratos. Codirigido por Mara Caruso -artista, profesora apasionada y pilar del atelier por muchos años- este encuentro tuvo un contexto muy inspirador, porque se desarrolló paralelamente a los proyectos de los otros artistas invitados de Brasil, Argentina y España. Talleres, exposiciones y “palestras”1 se sucedían unos detrás de otros y todos tratábamos de aprovechar al máximo estos cruces lo que enriqueció la experiencia y la interrelación entre los participantes.

The participants in Self-Portraits in Porto Alegre were the regular attendants in the workshops for adults organized by Atelier Livre. Most of them lived in the city of Porto Alegre or in the surrounding areas. Coincidentally self-reference predominated in this session. Among the pieces, Walter Karwatzki heartbreakingly narrates his suffering in a diptych showing him on the verge of asphyxia: he was affected by a lung condition. Leopoldo Castanzo, an architect and a graffiti artist, makes his self-portrait like a stencil to be sprayed on the wall. Silvia Giordani, a psychologist, takes her self-portrait surrounded by her books while Rodrigo Beheregaray shows his artist father’s brushes. The chapter closes with a piece by Clara Figueras, a hyperbole of the supporting mother, which also stealthily hints at the malign reproduction of cells and consequently the spread of disease.

Autorretratos en Porto Alegre contó con la asistencia de participantes regulares a los talleres de adultos del Atelier Livre. La mayoría de ellos vivía en la ciudad de Porto Alegre o en los alrededores. Coincidentemente, esta fue una sesión en dónde predominó la auto-referencialidad. Entre las obras producidas, la de Walter Karwatzki narra desgarradoramente su sufrimiento en un díptico que lo muestra al borde de la asfixia, afectado por una enfermedad en el pulmón. Leopoldo Castanzo, arquitecto y grafitero, realiza su autorretrato en forma de una plantilla para aplicar a la pared, Silvia Giordani, psicóloga, se autorretrata con sus libros mientras Rodrigo Beheregaray lo hace con los pinceles que pertenecían a su padre, artista. Cierra el capítulo la obra de Clara Figueras, una hipérbole de la madre proveedora que también insinúa veladamente la reproducción maligna de las células y con ella, la enfermedad.

“Alaska, the last frontier” is the slogan you read at Anchorage airport as soon as you land. And you have the sensation of being at the end of the world. Almost uninhabited, a crisp and pristine air makes shapes stand out tri-dimensionally and the sun sparkles behind snow-covered mountains.

This territory has a beauty that, as its climate, is breathtaking.

I evoke these sessions through its geography of contrasts as well as its wild fauna of bears and moose running loose on the university campus.

With the exception of photographer Hal Gage and artist Acacia Johnson, all other participants were foreigners in a certain way. Petra Lisiecki is from Germany and Esther Hong from Korea, Cloud Medicine Crow was born in the Hidatsa Tribe in North Dakota. The remaining artists came from different places in the United States. However, at one moment or another all of them had emigrated to this far away place and that circumstance had somehow shaped their lives. Now most of them do not see themselves without that feeling of belonging. And that duality appears in all their self-portraits. Being with one foot on each world is revealed explicitly in Esther Hong’s self-portrait and metaphorically in the rest of them. Acacia Johnson metamorphosed herself into a feathered bird, beautiful and threatening at the same time. Cloud Medicine Crow represents himself with his grandparents describing the stigma attached to being a Native American in a territory conquered by the White man. Enzina Marrari shows in simultaneous her bald head and wearing a blond wig, as she usually appeared in public. Ward Hulbert represented himself ambushed by a monstrous being. He had a hard time finishing it because he was not feeling well. The portrait was premonitory in a way because that same night he suffered a stroke, from which he is luckily recovered. The seventh session was intense in terms of content, circumstances and environment and brought about a group of self-portraits, which deserve to be analyzed, going deeper into the story they tell us.

“Alaska, la última frontera” es el slogan que se lee en el aeropuerto de Anchorage apenas se aterriza. Y se tiene la sensación de estar en el extremo del mundo. Casi inhabitada, con un aire tan prístino que resalta las formas tridimensionalmente y el sol que produce destellos en las montañas nevadas, este territorio tiene una belleza que, como su clima, corta el aliento.

Recuerdo esta sesión delimitada por su geografía de contrastes y su fauna salvaje de osos y alces que aparecían sueltos en el campus de la universidad. Salvo el fotógrafo Hal Gage y la artista Acacia Johnson, todos los otros participantes eran en cierta manera foráneos. Petra Lisiecki es alemana, Esther Hong de Corea, Cloud Medicine Crow nació en la Tribu Hitdasa en Dakota del Norte y los otros artistas en distintos lugares de Estados Unidos. Todos en algún momento habían emigrado a este lugar alejado del mundo y esa circunstancia había marcado sus vidas de una manera u otra. La mayoría ya no se concibe a sí mismo sin esta pertenencia. Y esta dualidad aparece en casi todos los autorretratos que siguen. De manera explícita, con un pie en cada mundo, en el autorretrato de Esther Hong y metafóricamente en los demás. Acacia Johnson se metamorfosea en un pájaro emplumado, bello pero amenazador a la vez, Cloud Medicine Crow se representa con ambos abuelos detrás de él, hablando de los estigmas de ser aborigen en un territorio ganado por el hombre blanco, mientras Enzina Marrari se revela simultáneamente calva y con una peluca rubia, con la que se mostraba en público. Ward Hulbert se representó a si mismo acechado por un ser monstruoso. Lo terminó con dificultad porque no se sentía bien. El retrato resultó premonitorio porque esa misma noche sufrió un ACV, del que afortunadamente ya está recuperado. La 7º sesión fue intensa en contenido, circunstancias y entorno y dio como resultado un grupo de autorretratos que merecen la pena analizarlos, deteniéndose en lo que nos narran.

The project was hosted simultaneously by the MTS Gallery, an interdisciplinary art center in Mountain View and by the Arts Department of the University of Alaska, where we worked in their printmaking workshop on the Anchorage campus. In conjunction with the project, I was invited to be the one-person jury for the National Juried Self-Portraits Exhibition “No Big Heads” organized by the Student Center of that university. The competition, ongoing for almost 30 years now, accepts all types of techniques in any discipline. The only limiting factor is size: 30 x 30 cm pieces. The diversity of works and techniques presented made me decide, beyond my responsibility as a jury, to design the exhibition layout by grouping works for easy reading. The curatorship and the exhibition room design I made for that occasion served as antecedents and experience for the final design of the Self-Portraits Exhibition.

El proyecto fue alojado simultáneamente por la MTS Gallery, un centro de arte interdisciplinario en Mountain View, y el Departamento de Artes de la University of Alaska, en dónde trabajamos en sus talleres gráficos en el campus de Anchorage. Conjuntamente con el proyecto, fui invitada a ser el único jurado de selección y premiación de la Exposición Nacional de Autorretratos “No Big Heads”1, que realiza el Centro de Estudiantes de la misma universidad. La competencia, que se ha realizado anualmente por casi 30 años, recibe todo tipo de técnicas en cualquier disciplina con la sola limitación de su tamaño: 30 x 30 cm. La diversidad de obras y medios presentados me hizo decidir realizar, más allá de mi tarea de jurado, el diseño de la exposición agrupándola confue el antecedente a claridad a la lectura de obras tan disextender mi tarea de jurado por lo que decid algún criterio que diera claridad a la lectura de obras tan disímiles. La curadoría y el diseño de sala que hice en esas circunstancias fueron el antecedente y sirvieron de experiencia para el trazado final de la exposición de Autorretratos.

The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) in Kansas City, Missouri, United States is an Institute of Art and Design offering the bachelor of fine arts degree in a variety of disciplines, with presence in the area dating back to 1885. The eighth session took place in that location thanks to an invitation I received as a visiting artist to the Printmaking Department, directed by the Mexican artist Miguel Rivera. The program requested the visiting artist to give a seminar and provide reviews of the students’ works as well as to deliver a lecture within the framework of the “Current Perspective” Series, an annual series of lectures. Within this context, this new edition of the project was included in a course for students. Miguel Rivera participated as an artist and as a co-director, while Doug Baker, a lecturer in the Printmaking Department, worked as both an artist and a coordinator with the students.

We worked deeply on the image including collective reviews I made together with Rivera and Baker. The three of us also selected the pieces that in the end would be part of the project.

El Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) en la ciudad de Kansas, Missouri en Estados Unidos es un Instituto de Arte y Diseño que ofrece la Licenciatura en Artes en varias especialidades, con una presencia en el área que se remonta a 1885. La 8º sesión se realizó allí gracias a una invitación que recibí como artista visitante del Departamento de Gráfica, que dirige el artista mexicano Miguel Rivera, la cual requería dictar un seminario, una conferencia y realizar críticas de obra a los estudiantes. En este contexto, la nueva edición del proyecto fue incluida dentro de un curso para los estudiantes. Miguel Rivera participó como artista y como co-director, mientras que Doug Baker, lecturer en el Departamento de Gráfica- lo hizo como artista y coordinador con los estudiantes. Aquí trabajamos intensamente con la imagen incluyendo críticas colectivas que hice conjuntamente con Rivera y Baker. Los tres, también, seleccionamos las obras que finalmente formarían parte del proyecto.

In this session the self-portrait of Miguel Rivera stands out with an image created “in layers” evidencing its digital origin and also depicting the experience of displacement, as if it were necessary to stock a series of images along the way to remember later where he come from. The irony appears in Jandro Montero’s self-portrait as an archetypical Louis XIV, this time modern and wearing sports shoes. Sewing as a task associated with the feminine world is calmly shown in Holly Roberts’ work (whose digital embroidery has a front and a back side). Oppositely, Lauren Stookey’s piece causes unease: she shows herself naked using the stitching of the typical American Midwestern quilts going through her skin. Hugh Merrill, an artist and KCAI professor with extensive work in printmaking, in education and marginalized communities art projects was invited as guest artist. His imposing triptych is shown in Chapter 9.

The Montclair Session was the result of a two years collaborative work with Professor Catherine Bebout of Montclair State University, New Jersey, USA. During a short term visiting artist appointment to Montclair State University in March 2015, I first introduced the “Self-Portraits Project” to the MFA students and Art and Design faculty. After a second meeting in Buenos Aires with former Global Education Director Dr. Marina Cunninghan, I was offered a Global Scholar in Residence award which allowed to schedule a return visit for April 2016.

In this way, and made possible with support from the Global Education Center, April 2016 a new session of the Self-Portrait Project was launched at Montclair State University (USA), College of the Arts, Department of Art and Design. Candiani and Prof Bebout conducted the collaborative, 10 day, hands on workshop that involved both a series of lectures and practicums presented to MFA graduate students who committed to project during my introductory visit. The participants included two Fulbright scholar artists: MSU Rescue Scholar Jumana Jaber from Syria and MFA student coordinator, Natalia Borisenko from Russia in addition to fellow international graduates in the program hailing from Poland, Macedonia, UK, and Guatemala. The collaborative project was an opportunity for the participants who were invited to contribute to the global art project to work far beyond the frontiers of their local creative community, allowing their art practice to become a part of a global dialogue.

Conjuntamente con la Profesora Bebout realizamos un taller colaborativo de 10 días que incluyeron una serie de conferencias y prácticas presentadas estudiantes de posgrado de la maestría, los que se habían comprometido a trabajar durante su visita introductoria. Entre los participantes se encontraban dos artistas becados por Fulbright: Jumana Jaber, de Siria, Natalia Borisenko - coordinadora de estudiantes de la Maestría en Bellas Artes- de Rusia, además de otros egresados​​ internacionales de Polonia, Macedonia, Reino Unido y Guatemala.

Este proyecto colaborativo fue una oportunidad para los participantes quienes fueron invitados a contribuir a un proyecto de arte global que les permitió mirar más allá de las fronteras de su comunidad creativa local, permitiendo que su práctica artística se convierta en parte de un diálogo global.

Traveling Exhibition | Exposición Itinerante

“Self-Portraits: An International Traveling Exhibition” comprises the donation of one of the five prints created by the participating artists, taking advantage of the printmaking reproducible capacity. Since 2011 the exhibition has visited the countries hosting the project as well as will visit some others in the future.

The exhibition consists of ninety-three works comprising different digital media and printmaking techniques (planography, screen-printing, etching, woodcut, among them) as well as hand interventions, collages, knitting and sewing, sometimes resulting in three-dimensional pieces. The curatorial proposal invites us on a visual tour, which breaks away with the geographical ties and gathers artists according to their common artistic concerns. Consequently, the exhibition is divided into nine “episodes”: Identity, Territory, Irony, Dreams, Deconstruction, “Mise-en-scène”, Politics, Wounds and Languages. These episodes relate works according to the problems or determining attitudes experienced by the artists when creating their self-portrait.

“Self-Portraits” is thus presented as a significant mural installation, flexible enough to be reassembled anywhere according to availability or space constraints, traveling thanks to the collaboration of the co-directors. Each one of them receives the exhibition and then travels with it to the next location. The full circle is then completed: artists participating in the project in different places connect with other artists, who in turn open future possibilities for yet another cross-cutting artistic project, far beyond this one which gave birth to it all.

Born in Argentina, Alicia Candiani is an artist, an architect and a cultural activist. She is the founding director of Proyecto´ace, an art space that runs an artist-in-residence international program. The program focuses on the expanded field of contemporary printmaking and on its interfaces with photography, design and digital media. From 2008 to 2010 she was appointed International Representative in the Executive Board of the Southern Graphic Council International in the United States. She lectures extensively about contemporary art, expanded field print and digital media centering on outof-the-mainstream countries especially. Her writings, essays and articles were published nationally and internationally.

Nacida en Argentina, Alicia Candiani es artista, arquitecta y activista cultural. Es la fundadora y directora de Proyecto’ace, un espacio de arte y programa internacional de residencias artísticas, centrado en las prácticas gráficas de campo expandido y sus interfaces con la fotografía, el diseño y los medios digitales. De 2008 a 2010 se desempeñó como Representante Internacional en el Consejo Ejecutivo del Southern Graphic Council International en los Estados Unidos. Alicia ha realizado numerosas presentaciones sobre arte contemporáneo, prácticas gráficas de campo expandido y medios digitales, con especial atención en los países no-centrales. Candiani’s professional practice often includes three overlapping strategies: production, critical discourse and collaborative work with artists, students and a range of communities around the world. This simultaneous practice was possible thanks to the careful methodology she developed as an architect. In addition to her background, her comprehensive approach also draws from art and design, as well as the theory of art and her refined technical skills. Her artistic work was shown broadly around the world and was the recipient of major international prizes: the most recent ones are the Jesus Nuñez Print Award in Spain, the Turner Prize Excellence in Visual Arts in USA, and the First Prize in the “Prints without Frontiers” exhibition in Germany, among many others. As an artist, she was awarded residences in USA, China, Canada and Europe. She was appointed member of the international jury at the triennial and biennial exhibitions in Krakow, Egypt, Bulgaria, Russia, Cuba, Alaska and Prague. Candiani was a visiting artist-professor at numerous art institutions around the world including UNESCO, Library of Congress and American universities, the Wroclaw Art Academy in Poland, the China Academy of Art and Casa de las Américas in Cuba, among others.

La práctica profesional de Alicia Candiani incluye tres estrategias que a menudo realiza conjuntamente: la producción, el discurso crítico, y el trabajo en colaboración con artistas, estudiantes y diferentes comunidades de todo el mundo. Esta práctica simultánea le ha sido posible gracias a la cuidadosa metodología que desarrolló como arquitecta. Junto con esto, su enfoque integral está basado en su práctica en el arte y el diseño, así como la teoría del arte y sus refinadas habilidades técnicas. Su trabajo artístico se ha expuesto en todo el mundo y ha recibido numerosos premios internacionales, siendo el Premio de Gráfica Jesús Núñez en España, el Premio Turner a la Excelencia en Artes Visuales en EE.UU., y el 1º Premio en la exposición “Gráfica sin fronteras” en Alemania, los más recientes de ellos. Ha sido galardonada con residencias en EE.UU., China, Canadá y Europa. Ha sido nombrada miembro del jurado internacional en las exposiciones trienales y bienales de Cracovia, Egipto, Bulgaria, Rusia, Cuba, Alaska y Praga. Candiani graduated from the National University of Córdoba-UNC, Argentina, with a degree in Fine Arts (Printmaking) and in Architecture and Urbanism.

In the same university she led the Printmaking and Art History Departments, teaching Printmaking, and European and Contemporary Art. She attended postgraduate courses on Latin American Art and Art Criticism at the University of Buenos Aires-UBA, Argentina and she specialized in innovative printmaking and digital imaging techniques at the Iowa State University in the United States. She lives and works in Buenos Aires.

En la misma universidad coordinó los Departamentos de Historia del Arte y de Grabado, enseñando Grabado, Arte Europeo y Contemporáneo. Hizo estudios de postgrado en Arte Latinoamericano y Crítica de Arte en la Universidad de Buenos AiresUBA, Argentina y se especializó en técnicas de imagen digital en la Iowa State University en los Estados Unidos. Vive y trabaja en Buenos Aires.
