CENTERSTAGE

The Providence Journal is your guide for arts, entertainment, and news events happening throughout Rhode Island.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to the Providence Performing Arts Center's 2019/2020 Season! We have all heard the old adage: “To whom much is given, much is expected.” For decades, your continued patronage and support of PPAC has created memorable experiences. This Season, I am honored to announce that PPAC is expanding our Community Outreach and Engagement with three new programs.

Experience PPAC is a new state-wide initiative that creates the opportunity for every 10th grade student in Rhode Island to see a select touring Broadway performance at no cost including transportation to and from the Theatre.

PPAC is debuting Sensory-Friendly Performances to create a guest experience that is welcoming, judgment-free and inclusive of patrons with a wide range of sensory, learning, and physical differences. The first sensory-friendly show on Sunday, November 24 at 3P is free to the public: THE ACROBATS OF CIRQUE-TACULAR. The second is a special Saturday morning show on December 21 of DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL We want to thank The Autism Project and TDF for their partnerships and advisement on these sensory-friendly performances.

Lastly, Disney Musicals in Schools selected PPAC to partner with them to build sustainable theatre programs over the course of several years in under-resourced Providence public elementary schools.

With the support of our loyal patrons, donors, underwriters, and sponsors, PPAC continues to offer a wide variety of other Community Outreach and Engagement initiatives to individuals who would otherwise be unable to experience the magic of live theatre.

Our spring and fall Wurlitzer Concerts are free to the public; these Concerts are made possible thanks to the support of our Annual Fund donors.

The Bank of America Arts Showcase brings elementary and middle school students to PPAC to attend live performances of dance, music or theatre during regular school hours at no cost and including transportation. This creates a lasting educational experience that goes beyond the walls of a classroom.

Next Stop Broadway® is a week-long theatre arts program connecting Broadway professionals with students ages 10-17 who are interested in the performing arts. In partnership with The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, ten scholarships were granted to children to pursue and develop their artistic talents. FIRSTFED also sponsors From Books to Broadway, a partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools designed to expose students to the magic of Broadway performances with a chance to “meet and greet” cast members.

PPAC hosted over 500 Rhode Island service members and their families to see a variety of shows through our Seats for Service Members program and our Big Dreams Begin With Broadway program hosted “bigs” (mentors) and “littles” (children) from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island.

We would like to thank Textron for 19 years of continuous support of our ARTS Scholarships Program, which awarded 32 scholarships this year to talented, young Rhode Island students. To date, over 600 scholarships have been awarded, making it possible for them to attend summer arts programs.

Your attendance and support is vital to PPAC and our community. I look forward to sharing with you another outstanding season at PPAC!

The Providence Performing Arts Center (“PPAC”) is a Rhode Island non-business corporation organized by the following: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc. The affairs of PPAC are administered by a Board of Directors, and representatives of the founders who, together with the Governor of Rhode Island and the Mayor of Providence, presently serve as members of the Board. None of the founders has an ownership in any of the assets of PPAC. In 1978 PPAC was purchased and continues to hold title to the Providence Performing Arts Center theatre, which PPAC maintains as a center for the performing arts. Under PPAC’s articles of association, no part of the earnings of the corporation may be paid to its members, the Board of Directors, the officers or any other private persons. If the existence of PPAC should terminate for any reason, its net assets would be distributed exclusively to one or more charitable or educational institutions accorded tax exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code.

We are coffee milk and Point Judith oysters. River fires and rolling farms. And while our name may not be familiar, our faces are. We’ve lived and worked here most of our lives, and proud to be part of the fabric of Rhode Island. From Lincoln to East Greenwich, East Providence to Warwick, and several points in between, we’re HarborOne Bank. Stop by anytime, we’d love to tell you a little more about us, and learn a little more about you.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Buckle up and prepare for take-off; this Season, you will discover the wonderful “world of Broadway!” The shows in our Taco/White Family Foundation Broadway Series and Encore Series all take place in unique locations, allowing you to “travel” the world, all from the comfort of your theatre seat!

We would like to thank Broadway Series title sponsor, Taco/The White Family Foundation, for their enduring support of our productions. We also wish to thank BankNewport for sponsoring our Family Night performances, HarborOne for their sponsorship of BLUE MAN GROUP, and Navigant Credit Union for their sponsorship of A BRONX TALE. A special thanks goes to our Broadway Season media sponsor WPRI CBS 12, our Encore Series media sponsor Cox Media, and our BankNewport Family Night media sponsors ABC 6 and Coast 93.3 for their continuing partnerships. Our sponsors help us bring the “Best of Broadway” to Providence, and we are grateful for their support.

Our 2019/2020 Taco/White Family Foundation Broadway Series features eight fantastic productions that will satisfy your wanderlust, including the National Tour launch of Jimmy Buffett’s ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE. You will experience “Agrabah” (Disney’s ALADDIN), Gander, Newfoundland (COME FROM AWAY), Russia (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF), Jerusalem (JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR), Yonkers, New York (HELLO, DOLLY!), “Bikini Bottom” (THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL), and “Anywhere, USA” (DEAR EVAN HANSEN) throughout this Season.

We will venture to the merry land of Whoville for the first show in our Encore Series, the holiday classic DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS! THE MUSICAL. A BRONX TALE, based on Chazz Palminteri’s critically-acclaimed play and beloved film, takes you to the Bronx in the 1960s. The high-energy and colorful BLUE MAN GROUP also returns by popular demand.

We are also looking forward to hosting several contemporary concerts during the 2019/2020 Season: Ray LaMontagne, Indigo Girls with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, Il Divo: Holiday and Hits, Bob Dylan & His Band, the return of the beloved Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra with conductor Keith Lockhart for their Holiday Pops concert, and more! Sign up for our e-mail list at ppacri.org/email to receive the latest news on upcoming events throughout the Season.

Thank you for including PPAC in your "travel" plans this year - enjoy the journey!

Warm Regards,

The Providence Performing Arts Center dedicates 100% of its proceeds from the Annual Fund Campaign towards our Community Outreach and Engagement. This program allows PPAC to create, produce, and present programs and activities that make the Theatre accessible to a wider range of people, especially young audiences and artists. 2019 ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN FOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT

Each year, the Providence Performing Arts Center is faced with the challenge of raising enough funds to offset the cost of producing and presenting the valuable programs we offer as part of our Community Outreach and Engagement. The Annual Fund is the vehicle that makes that possible. Annual Fund proceeds also help fund the development of new programs that specifically serve the needs of artists and audiences of demographic, ethnic, cultural, social, and professional diversity.

A special THANK YOU goes to our Community Outreach and Engagement underwriters who have made significant Annual Fund contributions designated to one or more specific outreach initiatives.

THEATRE HISTORY

It was a momentous day when the Loew’s Theatre Building, now known as the Providence Performing Arts Center, opened on October 6, 1928. The Theatre, designed by architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, has always been a visual marvel, and has astounded visitors with its beauty and grandeur. For more than nine decades, the Loew’s Theatre Building has not only survived, but ultimately flourished, while undergoing various name changes, storm damage, and ongoing architectural restoration.

After its opening in 1928, the Loew’s Theatre Building enjoyed several decades of success as a premiere movie palace. However, the venue began experiencing financial hardships and declining attendance with the rise of television’s popularity in the early 1950s. The Theatre also suffered damage from the New England Hurricane of 1938 and Hurricane Carol in 1954. The resulting damage from Hurricane Carol led to the removal of the Theatre’s original Morton pipe organ.

“I remember coming here as a young person and thinking I was walking into a fairyland. {…} I would like my little grandson to bring his grandchildren here. This will be here long after I am gone…” 1

- Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario, one of the many champions of the Loew’s Theatre Building.

In 1972, the theatre changed its name to the Palace Concert Theatre, where it mainly presented rock concerts, as opposed to screening films. During this time period, the theatre continued to fall into disrepair and to lose revenue. In 1976, through the efforts of Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario, the Theatre re-opened as the Ocean State Theatre, where it returned to screening films. On opening night, the staff screened Neil Simon's Murder by Death, and even invited Robert Reilly, an attendee from the opening day of the Loew’s Theatre Building to attend the performance as a guest of honor. Reilly told The Providence Journal-Bulletin, “I am glad we have some idealists in this town who would save a theat[re] like this.” 2

The Ocean State Theatre continued to screen films, but with limited success. The building’s owner, B.A. Dario, considered demolishing the historic Theatre. Local community figures, including then Governor J. Joseph Garrahy, then Chairman of PPAC’s Board of Trustees Bruce Sundlun (Governor of Rhode Island, 1991 – 1995), then Providence Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci, Jr., and Mrs. Dario, fought valiantly to save the building.

THEATRE HISTORY

They began to discuss transforming the Ocean State Theatre into a center for the arts to preserve the Theatre and to also help renew the downtown Providence area. In 1977, the Loew’s Theatre Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1978, the Theatre was purchased and saved by seven founding members: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc. The Ocean State Theatre became a nonprofit private corporation and was called the Ocean State Performing Arts Center.

In 1982, the Ocean State Performing Arts Center changed its name to the Providence Performing Arts Center, as a way of honoring the City’s commitment to saving the venue.

For the past 37 years, as the Providence Performing Arts Center, the Theatre has evolved and thrived due to the efforts of past and current board members and administrative staff, making it one of the most successful, not-for-profit theatres in the United States. Significant projects include a full-scale stage house expansion in 1995 and an historically accurate restoration of the Grand Lobby, Arcade, and House. These improvements allowed the Theatre to present largescale touring productions like THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, MISS SAIGON, WICKED, and Disney’s THE LION KING in Providence.

Since 2008, the Providence Performing Arts Center has launched nineteen National Tours, including Jimmy Buffett's ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE this Season. Three National Tours will open at PPAC during the 2020/2021 Season: AIN’T TOO PROUD – The Life and Times of The Temptations in July 2020, PRETTY WOMAN: THE MUSICAL in October 2020, and THE PROM in February 2021. These National Tour launches have contributed to making the Providence Performing Arts Center a well-respected, world-class cultural institution located in the heart of Providence. Additionally, as a destination for National Tours, PPAC is an important contributor to Providence’s economic and cultural growth.

A spectacular fireworks display in downtown Providence was part of the Theatre’s 90th anniversary celebration in October 2018. The EPIC anniversary season included a fantastic season of shows ranging from the tour launch of MISS SAIGON in September through the incomparable HAMILTON in the summer of 2019.

EXPERIENCE PPAC

“Experience PPAC” is our brand-new, state-wide education initiative that will provide every high school sophomore in Rhode Island with the chance to see a select Broadway performance at PPAC. For the 2019/2020 Season, tenth graders will attend Thursday morning presentations of COME FROM AWAY (Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 11A), FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 10A), and THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL (Thursday, May 14, 2020 at 10A). These three shows are part of the Taco/White Family Foundation Broadway Series.

Experience PPAC is funded by the PPAC Endowment, Annual Gala, and the Annual Fund. Working in partnership with PPAC, bus transportation company FIRST STUDENT will provide transportation to and from these shows. Tickets to these shows and busing are paid for by PPAC. There is no charge to the students or their schools for the theatre tickets or for bus transportation.

For more information on Experience PPAC, please contact Dana Brazil, Director of Outreach and Engagement, at dbrazil@ppacri.org or (401) 574-3132.

Disney Musicals in Schools builds sustainable theatre programs in under resourced public elementary schools. By providing free performance materials and free professional development to participating teachers.

In April of 2019, Disney Theatrical Group selected the Providence Performing Arts Center as its regional partner for its premiere education initiative Disney Musicals in Schools (DMIS). A two-year $120,000 grant from Disney Citizenship will enable PPAC to offer this program in selected Providence Public Elementary Schools. Each year, 5 new schools are selected and provided with free performance materials and in-school support from a team of professional PPAC teaching artists to produce a 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school. Over 17 weeks, teachers learn how to produce, direct, choreograph and music direct their first school show.

Over the course of a semester, professional PPAC teaching artists guide school teachers through the process of mounting a musical with student performers. The program culminates with a Student Share Event on our Broadway stage in which each school performs one number from their musical for an audience of students, teachers, family, and community.
