MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Welcome to the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC)’s 2016/2017 Season! “Come and see how great Broadway can be” with these PPAC debuts: A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER, THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, and MATILDA THE MUSICAL. PPAC is also launching the National Tour of THE KING AND I and bringing back perennial favorites: WICKED, Disney’s THE LION KING, and CHICAGO. Three great shows are slated for the Encore Series: ONCE, 42ND STREET, and RIVERDANCE – The 20th Anniversary World Tour RENT will return to the Theatre as a Broadway Special this Season.
With the support of our loyal patrons, donors, underwriters, and sponsors, PPAC undertook one major capital improvement project this year: the replacement of the backstage/dressing room HVAC system. The current system was installed during the 1994 stage expansion and this project will replace the chillers, boilers, air handlers, and pumps, which will all be controlled by a new computerized system and be significantly more efficient.
Our Community Outreach Initiative continues to provide free or low cost programs to individuals who would otherwise be unable to experience the magic of live theatre.
Last season, PPAC hosted almost 600 Rhode Island service members and their families to see a variety of shows through our Seats for Service Members program. PPAC’s Big Dreams Begin With Broadway program hosted several dozen “bigs” (mentors) and “littles” (children) from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State to see THE SOUND OF MUSIC.
PPAC’s Bank of America Arts Showcase brings Rhode Island middle school students, teachers, and artists together, embodying the true spirit of a community arts program. Each year, approximately 10,000 middle school students attend live performances of dance, music, or theatre at PPAC during regular school hours, creating a lasting educational experience that goes beyond the walls of a classroom.
We would like to thank the Textron Charitable Trust for 16 years of continuing support of our ARTS Scholarships Program, which awarded 36 scholarships this year to underprivileged students statewide. To date, approximately 500 scholarships have been awarded to Rhode Island students, making it possible for them to attend summer arts programs.
Camp Broadway® is a week-long theatre arts program connecting professional artists with students ages 10-17 who are interested in the performing arts. In partnership with The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, ten scholarships were granted to children to pursue their interests and develop their artistic talents. FIRSTFED also sponsors From Books to Broadway, a partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools designed to expose students to the magic of Broadway performances with a chance to “meet and greet” cast members.

PATRON SAFETY NOTICE: Heightened security measures have been implemented at PPAC, including a Providence Police detail at all events. No backpacks and briefcases are allowed in the building. All purses/bags may be inspected at the discretion of PPAC Security and/or the Officer on site.
HOUSE MANAGERS are stationed at the House Manager’s Desk on the Orchestra Level in the Grand Lobby. If any problem arises during the performance, please ask an Usher to see one of the House Managers immediately.
CAMERAS & OTHER RECORDING DEVICES are not allowed in the Theatre. Taking photos or recordings of a live performance is strictly prohibited; you may be asked to relinquish your mobile/electronic device.
CELL PHONES & PAGERS: Please turn off your cell phones and pagers for the duration of the performance. They are distracting and disruptive to the performers and your fellow audience members.
EMERGENCY INFORMATION: The Theatre emergency number is (401) 421-2997. Before coming to the Theatre, please inform someone of your exact seat location, so you may be located quickly in the case of an emergency.
ELEVATOR: The elevator is located on the first floor across from the Grand Lobby and adjacent to the Lobby Lounge. The elevator provides access to the Mezzanine, and First and Second Balconies.
PAYPHONE: A payphone is located on the first floor adjacent to the Grand Lobby near the Richmond Street entrance.
ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES/RESTROOMS:
The Arcade, Grand Lobby, Orchestra Level, Mezzanine, and First and Second Balconies are fully accessible from Weybosset Street. Please notify the Box Office in advance of any physical limitations that may restrict seating assignments. First floor restrooms, telephone, and water fountain are fully accessible; restrooms off of the walkway behind First Dress seating are also fully accessible. Ushers are available to help guests. Please ask for additional assistance at the House Manager’s Desk in the Grand Lobby.
ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES are available on a first-come; first-served basis in the Grand Lobby across from the Aisle 5 entrance. A driver’s license or credit card will be requested as a deposit.
LATECOMERS: Please be sure to allow adequate time for travel and parking so you may be in your seat before curtain time. Touring shows mandate that we hold latecomers in the Lobby until an appropriate time in the performance before seating them (sometimes as long as 20 minutes) in order to minimize disruption to other audience members.
CHILD POLICY: Children under the age of six may not attend PPAC performances unless the production is designated as a Family Show; we advise you to use parental discretion for all of the productions in our Season.

SMOKING: PPAC is a smoke-free facility. The use of E-Cigarettes is also not permitted inside the Theatre. Patrons may smoke outside under the Marquee at scheduled intermissions.

The Providence Performing Arts Center (“PPAC”) is a Rhode Island non-business corporation organized by the following: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc. The affairs of PPAC are administered by a Board of Directors, and representatives of the founders who, together with the Governor of Rhode Island and the Mayor of Providence, presently serve as members of the Board. None of the founders has an ownership in any of the assets of PPAC. In 1978 PPAC was purchased and continues to hold title to the Providence Performing Arts Center theatre, which PPAC maintains as a center for the performing arts. Under PPAC’s articles of association, no part of the earnings of the corporation may be paid to its members, the Board of Directors, the officers or any other private persons. If the existence of PPAC should terminate for any reason, its net assets would be distributed exclusively to one or more charitable or educational institutions accorded tax exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code. Welcome to our 2016/2017 Broadway Season! Thank you for joining us in celebrating 39 years of bringing the best of Broadway to Rhode Island!
We are pleased to share some noteworthy information with you. PPAC will be launching the National Tour of MISS SAIGON in the fall of 2018, after a limited Broadway engagement in 2017. We were highlighted nationally via Playbill regarding this exciting tour launch.
Have you ever wondered what PPAC’s backstage looks like? We are offering our patrons a behind-the-scenes look on our website with our brand new SHOW SIGNATURES gallery – read more on page 22. Providence Monthly did a special highlight on the backstage murals in their “Hidden PVD” series, which you can see in their September 2016 issue.
Our community outreach program Camp Broadway® received a Special Drama Desk Award for introducing young people to the magic of theatre. Our Camp Broadway® attendees had the special opportunity to see this award while camp was in session. Our five-day program culminates in a Family Finalé performance, where invited Broadway actors perform with our young artists. Javier Muñoz, current star of HAMILTON, was a Featured Player in the 2004 and 2005 Family Finalés. Speaking of HAMILTON, stay tuned for more information about when HAMILTON will make its Providence debut at PPAC.

Our Taco/White Family Foundation Broadway Series opens with the return of WICKED PPAC has been proud to launch a total of twelve National Tours in recent years; Rodgers & Hammerstein’s THE KING AND I brings that number to thirteen this November. A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER won the 2014 Tony Award® for Best Musical. The 2015 Tony Award®-winner for Best Play, THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, has touched Broadway audiences with its sensitive portrayal of an extraordinary teenager named Christopher. The entire Serengeti will come to life for three weeks when Disney’s THE LION KING returns. CHICAGO just celebrated its 20th year on Broadway, making it the longest-running Broadway musical in American history. Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, MATILDA THE MUSICAL tells the story of a determined and brilliant young girl who takes charge of her own destiny.
The Encore Series takes audiences on a roundtrip flight to Ireland, via New York City, with the return of the breathtaking love story, ONCE, set in Dublin. The quintessential backstage musical comedy, 42nd STREET chronicles Peggy Sawyer’s rise to stardom on Broadway. Finally, the international Irish dance phenomenon RIVERDANCE – The 20th Anniversary World Tour wraps up the Season in June 2017.

PPAC SHOW SIGNATURES
While a show is at PPAC, the Theatre’s backstage is abuzz with excitement. Each visiting company or artist leaves a memento – a mural of an individual show’s artwork and company signatures – on the backstage walls. Whenever people visit the backstage, they are impressed by the range of “show signatures” that decorate these walls.

The backstage murals first started when the National Tour of ANNIE performed at PPAC in 2001, but took off when the National Tour of Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was here in 2003.
Prior to 2001, touring road crews would go up to the projection booth and draw a more basic version of the show logo. The tour’s house operators would then sign the artwork. When General Manager Alan Chille would give tours of the building, he would bring guests to the booth and people would always get excited about seeing the show logos and reminisce about the various productions they had seen.
Former Technical Director Bill Brackett thought that since hardly anyone got to visit the projection booth, it would be better to have the companies create art on the backstage walls, as more people accessed the backstage area. Each visiting company was asked to select a cast or crew member to create a mural. Our Show Signatures project has been evolving beautifully ever since!

Under the guidance of Professional Facilities Management (PFM) and the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority (RICCA), The VETS recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation making it a state-of-theart performance venue. PPAC THEATRE HISTORY
The Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) presents a full roster of touring Broadway theatricals and contemporary engagements. PPAC has been the theatre of choice since 2008 in opening a total of thirteen National Tours, including the National Tour launch of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s THE KING AND I in November 2016. PPAC will also launch the National Tour of MISS SAIGON in the fall of 2018, during the Theatre’s 90th birthday season! PPAC has earned a special place in Rhode Island history as a beloved and notable landmark while remaining a vital contributor to the City’s continuing economic and cultural growth.
Since opening its doors on October 6, 1928 as the Loew’s State Theatre Movie Palace, the Theatre has astounded visitors with its beauty and grandeur. The Theatre was designed by esteemed Chicago architectural firm Rapp & Rapp. The architects were guided by Marcus Loew’s philosophy that tickets should be sold “to theatres, not movies.” PPAC features columns of imported marble, lavish interior, exquisite gold leaf plasterwork, grand proscenium, and flawless structural integrity.
After opening, the venue enjoyed several decades of success during the Golden Age of Movies; however, attendance declined with the rise of television’s popularity in the early 1950s. The Theatre faced mounting economic hardships and suffered significant damage from the New England Hurricane of 1938 and Hurricane Carol in 1954.
Under the names of the Loew’s Theatre and Palace Concert Theatre, the venue transitioned from screening films to hosting rock ‘n’ roll concerts. During this time period, the Theatre continued to fall into disrepair and, by the mid-1970s, faced demolition. Fortunately, in 1978, the Theatre was saved and was purchased by founding members Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc.
The Theatre became a private non-profit corporation and was known as the Ocean State Theatre from 1978 – 1982. It acquired the permanent name of the Providence Performing Arts Center in 1982 and has now become one of the most highly-regarded Theatres in the nation. PPAC has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978 and has been fully renovated; it is continuously being updated to retain its status as a premiere, world-class venue.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH INITIATIVE
The Bank of America Arts Showcase brings Rhode Island middle school students, teachers, and artists together in the true spirit of a community arts program. Performances in the Bank of America Arts Showcase are presented by New England artists. The artists are selected by PPAC based on the cultural diversity and educational value of their productions and the positive, energetic responses of their audiences.
All Rhode Island public, private, and parochial school children in grades six through nine are invited to attend the Arts Showcase performances. Reservations are required and requests are filled on a first-come; first-served basis. Tickets to performances in the Showcase are FREE; however, these tickets are not available to the general public. Middle school teachers who are interested in bringing their students to a Showcase performance can email requests for registration materials to cgoldsmith@ppacri.org
All performances begin at 9:40A and last approximately one hour.

This performance is a one-man show that brings to life the wonders and fun of physiology. Marvelous Marvin uses an unfolding house of colorful graphics, eyecatching inventions and magic tricks, infectious rap-style rhyming text, and intriguing experiments to inspire students to think in a creative and innovative manner.
Thursday, January 12, 2017 // 2nd Story Theatre: Story Theatre
This production incorporates multiple art forms including traditional folk music, dance, and improvisational comedy to re-tell classic folk tales from Aesop to the Brothers Grimm. The cast features the renowned local music duo of AtwaterDonnelly and a number of former and current teachers who craft these tales with fresh insight to convey important lessons essential to a middle school education.
Thursday, February 2, 2017 // Ryan P. Casey & Dancers: Reading in Rhythm
Professional and highly acclaimed tap dancer Ryan Casey and his dance company will tell the story of a student who begrudgingly tackles his summer reading list and exercises his overactive imagination. This rhythmic reimagining of beloved books and poems, from Shel Silverstein to Shakespeare and western novels to comics, will introduce and reacquaint students to books, genres, and characters that tie into their English language arts curriculum.
Thursday, March 30, 2017 // The Tsetse Initiative: EDU-Arts Civility
This motivational compilation of music, dance, and video will incorporate poetry written by Rhode Island middle school students addressing bullying and civility. Poems selected from a statewide poetry contest will be translated into music and dance, performed by local professional vocalists and dancers, and moderated by Chief Justice Frank J. Williams (ret.).
