MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Welcome to the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC)’s 2015/2016 season! “Surround Yourself with Broadway Sounds” as PPAC hosts an astounding 13 weeks of Broadway shows in the upcoming season. NEWSIES, MOTOWN THE MUSICAL and IF/ THEN are coming to PPAC for the first time. PPAC is also launching the national tour of the Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall production of the critically acclaimed CABARET. If that were not enough, the irreverent Tony® Award-winning THE BOOK OF MORMON and perennial fan favorite JERSEY BOYS return as one-week special engagements. THE PRODUCERS is a special treat for audience members on Halloween this season.
With the support of our loyal patrons, donors, underwriters, and sponsors, PPAC undertook a number of capital improvement projects this year. We replaced the carpeting throughout the entire Theatre with an accurate reproduction from a fragment of the original carpet installed in 1928. PPAC also refurbished the Richmond Street façade with window replacement, exterior painting, and terra cotta restoration.
Our Community Outreach Initiative continues to provide free or low cost programs to individuals who would otherwise be unable to experience the magic of live theatre.
We would like to thank Textron for 15 years of continuous support of our ARTS Scholarships Program, which awarded 30 scholarships this year to underprivileged students statewide. To date, almost 500 scholarships have been awarded to Rhode Island students, making it possible for them to attend summer arts programs.
Camp Broadway® is a week-long theatre arts program connecting professional artists with students ages 10-17 who are interested in the performing arts. In partnership with The Robert F. Stoico/FIRSTFED Charitable Foundation, ten scholarships were granted to children so they can pursue their interests and develop their artistic talents. FIRSTFED also sponsors From Books to Broadway, a partnership between PPAC and Rhode Island schools designed to expose students to the magic of Broadway performances with a chance to “meet and greet” cast members.
PPAC’s Bank of America Arts Showcase brings Rhode Island middle school students, teachers and artists together, embodying the true spirit of a community arts program. Each year, approximately 10,000 middle school students attend live performances of dance, music, or theatre at PPAC during regular school hours, creating a lasting educational experience that goes beyond the walls of a classroom.

HOUSE MANAGERS are stationed at the House Manager’s Desk on the Orchestra Level in the Grand Lobby.
CAMERAS & OTHER RECORDING DEVICES are not allowed in the Theatre. Taking photos or recordings of live performances is strictly prohibited; you may be asked to relinquish your mobile/electronic device.
CELL PHONES & PAGERS: Please turn off your cell phones and pagers for the duration of the performance.
CHILD POLICY: Children under the age of six may NOT attend PPAC performances unless the production is designated as a Family Show. We advise you to use parental discretion for all productions in our season.
DELAYED ARRIVALS: Please be sure to leave adequate time for travel and parking so you may be in your seat before curtain time. Touring shows mandate that we hold latecomers in the Lobby until an appropriate moment in the performance before seating them (sometimes as long as 20 minutes) in order to minimize disruption to other audience members.
EMERGENCY INFORMATION: The Theatre emergency number is (401) 421-2997. Before coming to the Theatre, please inform someone of your exact seat location, so you may be located quickly in the case of an emergency.
ELEVATOR: The elevator is located on the first floor across from the Grand Lobby and adjacent to the Lobby Lounge. The elevator provides access to the Mezzanine, and First and Second Balconies.
ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES/RESTROOMS: The Arcade, Grand Lobby, Orchestra Level, Mezzanine, and First and Second Balconies are fully accessible from Weybosset Street. Please notify the Box Office in advance of any physical limitations that may restrict seating assignments. First floor restrooms, telephone, and water fountain are fully accessible; restrooms off of the walkway behind First Dress seating are also fully accessible. Ushers are available to assist patrons. Please ask for additional assistance at the House Manager’s Desk in the Grand Lobby.
ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES are available on a firstcome, first-served basis in the Grand Lobby across from Aisle 5’s entrance. A driver’s license or credit card will be requested as a deposit.

ATM: An ATM is located in the Arcade adjacent to the Box Office window.
OUTSIDE FOOD/BEVERAGES are not allowed in the Theatre. CONCESSIONS are available in the Arcade, the Grand Lobby, and on the Mezzanine Level; patrons may bring concessions into the Theatre.
PAYPHONE: A payphone is located on the first floor adjacent to the Grand Lobby near the Richmond Street entrance.
SMOKING: PPAC is a smoke-free facility. Patrons who wish to smoke may do so outside under the Marquee at scheduled intermissions. The use of E-Cigarettes is also not permitted inside the Theatre.
LOST AND FOUND: Patrons who lose personal belongings while attending a performance may make all inquiries and claims with the PPAC Administrative Office at (401) 421-2997, ext. 0, Monday through Friday, 9A to 6P.

• Please limit the use of heavy perfumes or colognes – others around you may be sensitive or have allergies.
• Please refrain from eating loud snacks during the performance. Unwrap cough drops and candies in advance.
• If you need to leave your seat during the show, please do so as quietly as possible.
• So that all may enjoy the show, please refrain from talking during the performance.
• Please be kind and remain seated until after the cast bows. The performers work extremely hard to make each performance special. It would be greatly appreciated if you shared your enthusiasm!
• If any problem should arise before or during the performance, please ask one of the Ushers to see the House Manager or the Assistant House Manager in the Grand Lobby; someone will assist you promptly.

The Providence Performing Arts Center (“PPAC”) is a Rhode Island non-business corporation organized by the following: Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc. The affairs of PPAC are administered by a Board of Directors, and representatives of the founders who, together with the Governor of Rhode Island and the Mayor of Providence, presently serve as members of the Board. None of the founders has an ownership in any of the assets of PPAC. In 1978 PPAC was purchased and continues to hold title to the Providence Performing Arts Center theatre, which PPAC maintains as a center for the performing arts. Under PPAC’s articles of association, no part of the earnings of the corporation may be paid to its members, the Board of Directors, the officers or any other private persons. If the existence of PPAC should terminate for any reason, its net assets would be distributed exclusively to one or more charitable or educational institutions accorded tax exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code.

The Taco/White Family Foundation Broadway Series kicks off with the spirited Disney’s NEWSIES. MOTOWN THE MUSICAL has inspired theatregoers around the world with its sensational soundtrack and story. IRVING BERLIN’S WHITE CHRISTMAS will enchant and uplift everyone this holiday season. The National Tour of Roundabout Theatre Company’s CABARET launches at PPAC in January; this musical is the twelfth National Tour that has opened at PPAC since September of 2008. The 2013 Tony® Award winner for Best Revival, PIPPIN will astonish and amaze audiences in February. An all-new production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC visits PPAC in celebration of the iconic film’s 50th Anniversary. IF/THEN, a contemporary, “deeply moving” musical about the possible paths we choose in life, closes our Broadway Season in June.
The 2015/2016 Encore Series includes return engagements of the heartwarming classic, ANNIE and the compelling RAGTIME. BULLETS OVER BROADWAY will make its Providence debut in the spring.
The Broadway Season also features three Broadway Specials. THE PRODUCERS returns to PPAC for one night only this Halloween; this uproarious comedy holds the record for the most Tony® Awards won by a musical. THE BOOK OF MORMON, the smash hit show from the creators of South Park, makes its highlyanticipated return to Providence this November. JERSEY BOYS tells the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons and has proven to be an enduring success on Broadway and on the road.

Under the auspices of Professional Facilities Management (PFM) and the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority (RICCA), The VETS has experienced a remarkable revitalization period and has proven itself as a state-of-the-art concert hall. The VETS is the home of six Resident Companies: FirstWorks, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School, Festival Ballet Providence, the Rhode Island International Film Festival, and the Art League of Rhode Island. PPAC THEATRE HISTORY
The Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) presents a full roster of touring Broadway theatricals and contemporary engagements. PPAC has been the theatre of choice in recent years for opening a total of twelve National Tours, including the North American tour launch of Roundabout Theatre Company’s CABARET this 2015/2016 Season.
PPAC is a 3100 seat venue listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Rhode Island icon. We have been recognized as a “Best of Rhode Island All Star” in Rhode Island Monthly’s “Best of Rhode Island®” issue. PPAC has also earned international acclaim; Pollstar identified PPAC as one of the “Top Venues in the World” in 2012. The Theatre has been fully renovated and is continuously being updated to retain its status as a worldclass, state-of-the-art venue.
PPAC celebrates its 87th birthday this season; the Theatre originally opened on October 6, 1928 as the Loew’s State Theatre Movie Palace, and was designed by esteemed Chicago theatre architects George and C.W. Rapp. The awe-inspiring Theatre features columns of imported marble, lavish interior, exquisite gold leaf plasterwork, grand proscenium, and flawless structural integrity.
After several decades of sustained success, the Theatre’s attendance declined mid-century with the rise of television’s popularity. The Theatre endured mounting economic hardships and suffered significant damage from the calamitous hurricanes of 1939 and 1954. As a result of these challenges, the Theatre faced demolition in the 1970s. Fortunately, in 1978, the Theatre was saved from demolition and was purchased by founding members Citizens Bank, Fleet National Bank of Rhode Island, Old Stone Bank, Outlet Company, Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Bank, and Textron, Inc., and became a private non-profit corporation.
The Theatre acquired the permanent name of the Providence Performing Arts Center in 1982 and has lived on to become one of the most highly-renowned theatres in the nation. The Theatre has earned a special place in Rhode Island history as a beloved, historic landmark while remaining a vital contributor to the City’s economic and cultural growth.

The Rhode Island Commodores join members of the Rhode Island National Guard prior to a Broadway performance, where over 70 tickets were provided to local service members and their families, thanks to their generous sponsorship of this program.
In the spring of 2008, PPAC initiated a pilot Seats for Service Members program to provide preferred orchestra seats to members of Rhode Island’s National Guard and their families for all of our Broadway Series and Encore Series performances. The program was met with such resounding success that we were able to raise enough money to continue it again for the seventh season in a row! We hope that the Seats for Service Members program will let the thousands of men and women, who selflessly dedicate themselves to protecting our country, know how much we greatly appreciate their outstanding sacrifices and courageous efforts.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH INITIATIVE
The Bank of America Arts Showcase brings Rhode Island students, teachers, and artists together in the true spirit of a community arts program. Tickets to performances in the 2015/2016 Bank of America Arts Showcase Season are FREE; however, these tickets are not available to the general public. This program is an outreach offering to Rhode Island middle school students only. Middle school teachers who are interested in bringing their students to a Showcase performance can email Cynthia Goldsmith at cgoldsmith@ppacri.org for registration information and materials. All performances begin at 9:30A and last approximately an hour.
OCTOBER 29, 2015 // ATWATER – DONNELLY BAND TRADITIONAL AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC & DANCE
This award-winning duo performs with band members to present traditional American folk music highlighting the cultural mix that is the basis of our American heritage. Introducing students to a wide array of instruments, dynamic music, and captivating dance, Atwater-Donnelly brings the American culture and history to life with ease and humor with their student audiences.
JANUARY 7, 2016 // KALEIDOSCOPE THEATRE // B.U.L.L.Y. – LEVEL 2 (BETTER UNDERSTANDING BY LISTENING AND LEARNING ABOUT YOU)
This production focuses attention on the dangers of aggressive behavior that many children face every day in both public and private school systems and offers viable solutions and options on how to handle these situations effectively. Performed by young actors 12 to 18 years of age, this performance is geared specifically toward middle school students.
FEBRUARY
4, 2016 // FESTIVAL BALLET // HANSEL AND GRETEL
This professional and highly acclaimed dance company will present their world premiere production of Grimm’s beloved story of companionship and cunning through contemporary ballet, creative costuming, and beautiful music. Students will also participate in a demonstration regarding the language and terminology of ballet, theatrical expression, and the discipline and strength required for ballet dance movements.
MARCH 7, 2016 // GARRY KRINSKY // TOYING WITH SCIENCE
Ideally suited for the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade curriculums, this fast-paced and varied program combines circus skills, mime, and audience involvement in the exploration of the scientific principles of gravity, leverage, fulcrums, and simple machines. First commissioned by Boston’s Museum of Science, “Toying with Science” investigates basic scientific concepts and demonstrates that by mastering those concepts, one can produce terrific results!
