THE PPAC STORY…

It was a momentous day when the Loew's Theatre Building, now known as the Providence Performing Arts Center, opened on October 6, 1928. The Theatre, designed by architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, has always been a visual marvel, and has astounded visitors with its beauty and grandeur. For nine decades, the Loew’s Theatre Building has not only survived, but ultimately flourished while undergoing various name changes (The Palace, Ocean State Theatre, and more), storm damage (Hurricane Carol in 1954), and ongoing architectural restoration.

Rhode Island almost lost this precious gem when the Building was slated for demolition in the late 1970s. Thankfully, the Building was saved through the efforts of several local figures, including Mrs. B.A. (Sylvia) Dario, former Governor of Rhode Island Bruce Sundlun, and former Providence Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci. In 1977, the Loew's Theatre Building was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1978, the Building was purchased by seven founding members and became a private non-profit corporation. Since 1982, the Building has lived on as the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC).

Through it all, it has remained an exquisite and beloved place – each time the curtain rises, new adventures and magic await the audience…a world class Theatre at home here in Rhode Island.

…TELL US YOURS!

In honor of the Loew's Theatre Building’s 90th Anniversary, tell us your favorite memory of the Theatre. Did you see your first Broadway show at PPAC or your first movie at the Loew's State? Have you celebrated an anniversary or birthday at the Theatre?

Send us your story via email: storiesfor90th@ppacri.org or by mail: PPAC Marketing, Providence Performing Arts Center, PPAC Square, Loew's Theatre Building, 220 Weybosset Street, Providence, RI 02903-3783 by Wednesday, August 1, 2018. We hope to share these stories with the community during our Anniversary Celebration.

“From its inception as a movie palace in 1928 to the present as one of the premiere Performing Arts Centers in the country, the Loew's Theatre Building, a historical treasure, has always been a place where patrons have found joy. We are proud to be celebrating 90 years of this magnificent Theatre.”

- Joseph W. Walsh, Esq. Chairman, Board of Directors, Providence Performing Arts Center

“The entire staff of the Providence Performing Arts Center has focused on keeping the Theatre current while preserving its glorious history. We are honored to be the keepers of this irreplaceable gem which has been called ‘the Jewel of Weybosset Street.’ We hope you will celebrate this milestone with us during the 2018/2019 Season - and then, on to the centenary!”

Please join us in celebrating our beautiful Theatre's 90th Anniversary and all that it has given to the City of Providence and the State of Rhode Island. Additional event details will be announced; visit www.ppacri.org and sign up for our e-list to receive more information.

This event will be FREE and all are invited to attend!
