LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Jonathan Maerkl Director of Bands
Thank you for joining us this evening! Life is full of challenges, but tonight we focus on the blessings and joys that unite us. Through the power of music—a gift from God—we’ll set aside our troubles, have some fun, and lift our spirits.
As I reflect on this school year, I am especially grateful for:
• Our 99 talented band students spanning grades 5–12, whose dedication shines brighter each day.
• The incredible success of our 19-member marching band, highlighted by recent wins, superior ratings, and consistent achievement.
• Your generous support, which allows us to invest in essential equipment like a new tuba, percussion instruments, and guest clinicians.
• The honor of seeing several of our students selected for the Duval/ Nassau Honor Bands.
Tonight’s program will take you on a festive journey through some of our favorite Christmas music. We’ll celebrate the season with movie classics like The Grinch, Polar Express, Charlie Brown, and Rudolph. We’ll also gather around the fire with timeless carols such as Good King Wenceslas, Deck the Halls, Jingle Bells, and Sleigh Ride.
Our youngest band members will share the true meaning of Christmas with beloved carols like Angels We Have Heard on High, Away in a Manger, and Silent Night. You’ll also hear fresh takes on familiar songs, including a hip-hop/R&B rendition of O Holy Night, the jazzy Jazz Waltz of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the funky God Rest Ye Merry Funkymen. Mariah Carey herself (invited or not!) makes an appearance with the inescapable All I Want for Christmas Is You. We’ll round out the evening with a stirring rendition of Holst’s In the Bleak Midwinter. While our setting is purely instrumental I thought you should know the words to the poignant final stanza:
What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; Yet what I can, I give Him—give my heart.
This year, I am also thankful for the tremendous growth I’ve seen in our students and the amazing potential for our program’s future. Parents of younger band members, I hope you see the possibilities as you watch the older students perform tonight. With perseverance, your child will reach incredible heights.
Above all, I am grateful for Jesus. He gives us a hope that transcends our circumstances and reminds us that our worth is never tied to performance. We are loved by the Creator of the universe, who demonstrated that love by sending His Son to take our place 2,000 years ago.
I hope tonight’s concert fills you with joy and reminds you of life’s blessings. Above all, I pray you know the hope and love that comes through Jesus, whose birth we celebrate this season. Thank you for supporting our band program, and Merry Christmas!
