Letter from the Director
Jonathan
Maerkl Director of Bands
Thank you for joining us this evening for our 2025 Spring Band Concert titled MAERKL STUDIOS!
This title was actually presented to me by one of our current 8th-grade students when he was in 7th grade last spring. He brought me a drawing of the logo on notebook paper, and it made me smile from ear to ear. While I believe his original intent was to suggest a title for last year’s spring concert — which also featured plenty of movie music — the theme for that concert had already been chosen and the marketing materials created. However, knowing that I always like to program some pop and movie music for my spring concerts, I kept his idea in the back of my mind.
As I chose to use his suggested theme for this year’s concert, here’s what it has come to mean to me:
• Of course, we are featuring movie music! You’ll hear Cantina Band from Star Wars, Skyfall from the James Bond film of the same name, Gonna Fly Now from Rocky, The Avengers theme, and No One Mourns the Wicked from Wicked.
• We are also highlighting some of my favorite band pieces. After 23 years of teaching, I know there’s never enough time to play all the pieces you want with every group of students. But with this concert — especially for our seniors before they graduate — I wanted to share a few works that have been particularly rewarding to study and perform over the years. These include the beloved First Suite in E-flat by Gustav Holst, the modal Toccata for Band by Frank Erickson, the rhythmically playful Third Suite by Robert Jager, and the second-line groove Spirit of New Orleans.
• And finally, with this theme, I fully embrace the absurdity of the title. I hope it makes you smile and chuckle a little bit, like it does me. I know that I produce nothing apart from the blessings of God and the many people who are the hands and feet of Jesus, supporting the work we do in the Providence Band Program.
I have been blessed to work at Providence for 10 years. Three of the seniors on stage today have had me as their band director for eight years! Thank you, students, for your hard work. Thank you, parents, for your support and encouragement. Thank you to the administration, staff, and faculty at Providence for creating a space where we can do this work and flourish.
To God be the glory for the work He does through us all!
