Communities celebrated Australia Day

OLLIE Holmes (left) and Tyler O’Dwyer looked right at home in the prep room at Appin Park Primary School yesterday. They were among a class of 21 excited youngsters who enjoyed their first day at school, getting familiar with their new surroundings. The Appin Street school was one of those across the Rural City of Wangaratta which kicked off the 2024 school year by welcoming students yesterday. Others will open their doors over the next few days to primary and secondary-aged locals who are raring to learn and spend time with friends. ■ See story page 2 PHOTO: Kurt Hickling

Voice your view COMMUNITY response to the Rural City of Wangaratta’s draft Recreation and Open Space Strategy will be sought during five ‘drop-in’ sessions to be held on Monday and Tuesday. accessible opportunities for locals to be and stay active. The draft strategy has been developed with the help of funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund. Next week’s sessions

will be attended by a representative from consultant ROSS Planning, offering locals the chance to learn more about the strategy and also provide their feedback. Community engagement carried out during the development of the draft strategy identified three open space priorities for residents over the next 10 years: new/upgraded

playgrounds (30 per cent); improved access to lakes/ rivers/creeks (28 per cent); and new/upgraded paths (26 per cent). Content in the draft strategy ranges from future directions for the diverse range of sports pursued in the rural city, to proposals for the many parks located across Wangaratta. These include the suggestion that a master

plan be undertaken for King George V Gardens; a recommendation that the Merriwa Park Soundshell be removed; and the nomination of smaller parks which could be rationalised, including Dundas Reserve and Evalyn Reserve. The draft strategy identifies high priorities (recommended to be undertaken as soon as resources allow), medium

priorities (next five to 10 years), and low priorities (next 10 to 15 years). High priority proposals include: • development of an affordable physical activity program in parks and community halls across the rural city; • investigation of suitable sites for a second soccer facility and a hockey pitch; ■ Continued page 2
