A COMPREHENSIVE report calling for the Wangaratta-Whitfield Road to be fixed and for investment in infrastructure to better serve both residents and the half a million tourists who visit the King Valley each year, has received official support of the Rural City of

The King Valley Infrastructure Project was started in 2018 when two residents assessed the

condition of road from the Wangaratta to Whitfield, but with input from over 400 resident households and 50 businesses - who overwhelmingly agreed it needed to be upgraded - it became an evidence-based demand for investment in the King Valley region.

With a prediction more

than 1,000,000 people will visit the King Valley each year by 2030, project proponents John Bridges and Chris Hazell say an urgent upgrade of the road through to Cheshunt is required.

They also want to see it renamed the King Valley Road, to have stage three of

the Murray to Mountains rail trail completed from Oxley to Cheshunt and to have a sculpture trail alongside it.

But key to the project is the upgrade of the road and it was supported by more than 85 per cent of residents surveyed.

Frompage 1 Rural city chief executive officer Brendan McGrath said the 70 page report, which was tabled and noted at Tuesday night’s council meeting, validated what council already knew about the wishes of the King Valley community.

He said he believed the poor condition of the road was something the State Government was aware of too.

“We’ve known for a while the road is in good condition in parts, but in poor condition in other parts, and needs work, including widening and shoulder sealing, and it’s great to have that validated through extensive resident and business feedback and by the quantitative data provided,” he said.

“It gives us a really clear view the community actually supports what we - and they - have been concerned about for many years.”

Mr McGrath said the improvement of the road has been one of council’s key advocacy priorities for around five or six years and he believes Regional Roads Victoria also see it as a high priority.

He said council will continue to advocate both to Regional Roads Victoria and the State Government through the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll MP as a priority providing them with a copy of the report - with Mr Bridges and Ms Hazell invited to participate.

“It will highlight the growth of tourism in the King Valley and we’ve been in a strong tourism partnership with the state for a number of years around investment there, and getting the state to come to the party with upgrades to the road is an important part of the process,” Mr McGrath said.

“We’ve now got some good information on traffic, safety issues, the residents’ concerns and the projected tourism growth, which all point to the need to do some serious work to get the road upgraded over the next couple of years.”

Mr McGrath said while it appeared there was a desire by residents to see the road renamed the King Valley Road, it was something council would do more work on - in discussion with the State Government - although he considered the physical works “a much higher priority”.

Delighted with council’s response CHRIS Hazell and John Bridges attended the council meeting on Tuesday evening and said they left feeling upbeat following the positive reaction and unanimous support received by Rural City of Wangaratta councillors.

“I’m pleased we’ve done the work, it’s now complete and there is the will to push this forward,” said Ms Hazell.

“They were very impressed with what we’ve done that we’ve produced a project ready to go - and I think there is enough energy and commitment now to keep driving it.”

Mr Bridges said the pair spoke to all councillors following the meeting and it was obvious they had read and understood the report and what it meant for local residents and businesses.

“I always believed they’d say it was a good idea but we were blown away by their individual reactions and universally positive response to it,” he said.

He said infrastructure projects aligned well with council’s own Prosecco Road Revitalisation Project, with $4m in funding having been received from the State Government for improvements including township enhancements currently underway in Whitfield and Cheshunt.

“King Valley is the home of Prosecco in Victoria, and perhaps even Australia, and it’s something we’re continuing to maximise and promote from a tourism perspective, but I think priority one is to get key sections of that road widened and repaired,” he said.

“There is a mixture of town-

Ms Hazell and Mr Bridges have already met with Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy and have a meeting coming up with Independent Indi federal MP Helen Haines.

Further meetings are being scheduled with government representatives; the project having already received the support of the Moyhu Action Group, King Valley Residents Association and Wines of the King Valley.

“The longer stretches through rural areas are ones we’d have to spend more time on and target funding for, but that part of the project is no less achievable than Wangaratta to Bright or Wangaratta to Beechworth,” he said.

“Like all these things they just take time to work through the system.”

Mr McGrath commended John Bridges and Chris Hazell (who estimate over 5000 volunteer hours have been spent on the project) saying they had done “a fantastic amount of work”, particularly in terms of their level of engagement with the community.

Mr McGrath said while extending the rail trail from Oxley through to Cheshunt would be “very expensive” and he doubted it would happen “in one hit”, he believed priority components of it - such as having good cycling connections between wineries would make sense to achieve first.

WANGARATTA’S generosity is once again on show, as the community helps one of its own big-hearted residents return comfortably home after facing a health challenge.

Alex Carmody, who has been involved in the Wangaratta district’s fundraising efforts for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal for more than 50 years, hopes to return home next week, after more than two months in hospital following the below-theknee amputation of his left leg.

The 81-year-old’s July surgery at The Alfred in Melbourne followed trauma to his leg triggered by a car accident last year.

Alex is currently in the rehabilitation unit at Wodonga hospital, and is becoming more proficient by the day in the use of his prosthetic limb, but he yearns to return to Wangaratta.

“I’m home there - and they say there’s no place like home,” he said.

However, adjustments will need to be made to the home Alex shares with wife Judy, so the experienced fundraiser has become the focus of a GoFundMe campaign seeking to raise $20,000 to cover the cost of a bathroom renovation and construction of a ramp at his house.

The appeal page was initiated by local resident Lauren McCully, who said every contribution would assist the Carmody family, and so far more than $10,000 has been donated by those accustomed to seeing Alex’s broad grin behind appeal tins around the rural city.

Alex and his daughter, Tracey McKinnon, said they had been amazed by the reaction to the GoFundMe page.

“Dad got quite emotional when I was reading out some of the comments; he’s very humble, and a bit like myself, was overwhelmed by the wonderful responses,” Tracey said.

“It’s probably not a surprise in a lot of ways that so many people are reaching out, after all that he’s done over the years.

“I know Dad doesn’t do anything for the accolades or for recognition, and he certainly didn’t expect

“For others to realise what he does is heart-warming.

“Our community is awesome.”

Alex said he was surprised and humbled when told about the GoFundMe page.

“I didn’t expect it - you don’t do the work for things like this - but I know people in Wangaratta are very good at helping others,” he said.

He said he was feeling well, and was quickly getting used to his prosthetic leg, gaining some independence as he prepares his

own breakfast and negotiates the shower and bathroom.

“I still have moments, but there are plenty of others worse-off than me,” he said.

Alex is a long-time contributor to the Wangaratta community, both through his RCH Appeal work, and as a Scout group leader, North Wangaratta Football Club president and CFA member.

He was awarded a Royal Humane Society medal in 1977 for minimising harm to others in a 1976 explosion at his Parfitt Road fuel business, which left him with burns to 65 per cent of his body.

Alex had drawn on the fire safety knowledge he’d gained through the CFA in tackling the incident.

Tracey said through his recovery, Alex’s focus remained on fundraising, including ensuring that the AFL grand final posters he traditionally sells for charity were available to fans this week.

“He’s always thinking of others, and all I can do is aspire to be like him; he’s my hero,” she said.

PETROL prices across Wangaratta have risen overnight, following the discontinuation of the national fuel excise cuts earlier this week.

Initially introduced in March, the scheme saw tax considerations applied to fuel at the bowser across the country halved to 22.1 cents per litre, in order to ease rising cost of living pressures felt throughout Australia.

The six-month tax break came to a close in the early hours of yesterday morning, with prices rising by up to 10c per a litre overnight.

Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers said costs associated with the fuel excise reduction had reached around $3 billion during the six month period. “(Fuel prices are) still substantially off the peak that we saw earlier in the year so even when the petrol excise comes back on in full, we still expect prices to be below what they were at their peak a few months ago,” he said.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said there was still a lot of discounted fuel stored at service stations and they would be watching for those taking immediate advantage of the increase in the excise.

After settling around $1.69 per litre for unleaded 91 fuel earlier in the week at some petrol suppliers within the rural city, prices had risen to $1.79 per litre by Thursday morning, a price shared by APCO, Ampol, Woolworths and BP. Unleaded prices at Shell service station on Parfitt Road were slightly higher on Thursday, sitting around $1.87 per litre.

Integrity in politics boosted Haines welcomes introduction of National Anti Corruption p Commission legislation g INDI Independent federal MP Helen Haines has welcomed the introduction of the legislation for the National Anti Corruption Commission by the government into the House of Representatives on Wednesday.

Dr Haines has campaigned for a strong, independent integrity watchdog since being elected in 2019, introducing a bill to create the Australian Federal Integrity Commission in 2020 and again in 2021.

Dr Haines continued the work of the former Independent MP for Indi Cathy McGowan, who also introduced a bill for a federal integrity commission in 2018.

“This is a momentous day and it has been a long time coming,” Dr Haines said.

“It is the first time a government has introduced a bill for an integrity watchdog to parliament.

“Until now, all bills had come from the crossbench or the Greens.

“I am encouraged by what I have seen from the government so far.

“This bill includes many of the same features as my bill for the Australian Federal Integrity Commission, including a broad definition of corruption, the ability to take referrals from the pub-

“It is clear to see in the bill that has been introduced that the government has listened to the concerns that I and other crossbenchers raised with the Attorney General,” Dr Haines said.

“Genuine and constructive consultation on this important piece of legislation has lead to crucial changes.”

Dr Haines signalled she still holds concerns about some aspects of the bill.

“Under the government’s bill, public hearings will

only be held in exceptional circumstances and when in the public interest to do so,” she said.

“It is not clear why the ‘exceptional circumstances’ test has been included and I am concerned it creates an unnecessary extra hurdle when private hearings are already the default.

“I will be looking closely at the bill over the coming weeks to ensure each clause is appropriate and serves a strong, independent watchdog with the appropriate safeguards.”

Dr Haines has nominated to be a member of the joint select committee that will examine the bill before it goes to a vote.

“Throughout this process I have committed to work in good faith with the government to examine the bill and improve it where necessary and I intend to continue that through the committee process,” Dr Haines said.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity and I will be working hard to make sure we get it right.”

The joint select committee should be announced this week, and the committee will report back by November 10, which leaves enough room for the legislation to be passed this year.

Public hosptial’s redevelopment nears completion $22.9m works ready by year’s end, with more specialisations being p g secured for communityy

NORTHEAST Health Wangaratta (NHW) is gearing up for the opening of its $22.9 million redevelopment, due for completion by the end of 2022.

NHW CEO Libby Fifis said the redevelopment, expected to be complete by Christmas, is an exciting time for community and staff.

“The redevelopment will enable us to better address the healthcare challenges being experienced across the state and increase the services Northeast Health Wangaratta offers to the community,” she said.

Along with the enhanced Intensive Care Service and Short Stay Unit which opened this year, the expanded building will deliver additional capacity in NHW’s emergency department, paediatric unit and medical ward.

In addition to the $22.9M upgrade, the NWH maternity ward is being upgraded to provide a more contemporary and comfortable environment for patients and staff.

Ms Fifis said that as part of a revitalised clinical team, NHW

has appointed a new internal medicine clinical director - Dr Sara Baqar.

“Dr Baqar is an experienced physician and endocrinologist with a history of working in the hospital and health care industry with Austin Health and other medical institutions,” Ms Fifis said.

“Her appointment is another exciting addition to the team as NHW permanently appoints specialists across general medicine, medical oncology, cardiology and nephrology.”

Dr Baqar said she was thrilled to be joining NHW and was already feeling “very welcomed by the Wangaratta community and all hospital staff ”.

“I am looking forward to working with our dedicated team to bring additional specialisations to the community, drawing on my experience in diverse clinical settings.

“I’ve recently enjoyed getting out and about to meet our local GPs, and share with them the new services we are providing for their patients.

“These will further strengthen the public health service we provide to the community.”

Ms Fifis said the health service will also be welcoming a new gastroenterologist and geriatrician to the team in early 2023.

She said that in addition to the new specialities, NHW has established public endocrine and cardiology outpatient services and are now accepting GP referrals.

“As the major healthcare provider in the Central Hume region, our internal medicine team has also enabled us to explore innovative models to better support regional care and our small health service partners,” Ms Fifis said.

“One such example of this is the physician in-reach model currently being piloted between NHW and Yarrawonga Health.

“This is an exciting time for our health service as we continue to scale and grow our services for the community.

“I am excited about the future of NHW and how we can continue to serve our community.”

Marathon rider to pass through Wangaratta DANIEL Fitzgerald, who grew up on a farm in Omeo, will cycle through Wangaratta today on his 3000km ride from Esperance, Western Australia to Omeo to raise funds and awareness around suicide prevention for the Black Dog Institute.

Daniel was spurred on to the ride after experiencing his own struggles with mental health and losing his best mate, Whelan, who committed suicide in 2019.

The 37 year-old will be riding through Wangaratta this morning after having a day break at Yarrawonga yesterday.

This weekend he will be

completing his journey to the Golden Age Hotel in Omeo via the Great Alpine Road.

LOCAL police have commended the efforts of motorists travelling throughout the region during an extended long-weekend, with officers identifying some 76 offences over the fourday period.

Despite increased traffic throughout the North East as holidaymakers flocked to the region to enjoy the first extended break of spring, police throughout the Wangaratta police service area (PSA) were kept relatively quiet, as they worked

to cut down on unsafe driving behaviours.

Across the PSA, which includes Wangaratta, Alpine and Moira local government areas, four drug drivers, 44 speeding drivers and six seatbelt offences were identified, while nine unregistered vehicles were spotted on the roads.

One vehicle was impounded, while police issued an infringement notice to a 21-year-old Oxley P-plate driver alleged to have crashed his vehicle along Oxley Flats Road on Sunday morning while driving under

the influence of alcohol.

One mobile phone offence was identified, while four disqualified and six unlicensed drivers were promptly intercepted by police.

During the three-day Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June, police identified a total of 95 offences.

Wangaratta police Sergeant Scott Mundie said officers had been pleased with the efforts made by the majority of motorists throughout the region.

“Overall I think police were fairly happy with motorists over

the weekend,” he said.

“The public were all fairly well behaved.”

The three months between September and December are widely regarded as the most dangerous for Victorian roads, with road deaths rising by an average of 80 across the state over the last five years.

Some 187 people have lost their lives on Victorian roads so far this year, 16.9 per cent more than the same time last year and the state’s second-highest tally during the equivalent time period since 2017.

$1m study commitment to bust CBD congestion

By SHANE DOUTHIE CONGESTION in Wangaratta’s Central Business District (CBD) will be addressed according to Nationals’ MP, Tim McCurdy, with a million-dollar commitment announced yesterday to conduct a comprehensive road and traffic study.

The study of the Wangaratta CBD will also include exploration of a second Ovens River crossing option.

Mr McCurdy described the pledge as “committing to the long-term future of Wangaratta”.

“We know that bridges and bypass roads are a long-term project, however, we still need to seek alternatives to Murphy Street and the congestion that it brings,” he said.

“My office is located on Murphy Street, and I regularly see traffic backed up, especially in peak hours.

“Regularly I hear from locals who are concerned about the amount of traffic and congestion throughout the Wangaratta CBD. “This commitment, if the Nationals are elected to government in November, is about addressing the concerns around congestion in

Mr McCurdy said the commitment will facilitate the study, as well as comprehensive designs and planning for alternative routes and options to be explored, including a potential second river crossing.

“We know the need for a second river crossing is there, and we know there is public support for con-

structing a second crossing.”

A survey of more than 750 Wangaratta residents, conducted by Mr McCurdy last year, revealed that more than 90 per cent were in favour of a second river crossing, with many citing congestion, and the large number of trucks using the CBD as a cause for concern.

“There was great uptake of the survey, and locals still call me to ask about

it,” Mr McCurdy said.

“I have listened, and I am committing this funding to take the first steps and get the ball rolling.

“Traffic congestion will not go away until we do the work and establish the solution...only then can we hope to build for the future and free up the roads in the centre of Wangaratta.”

Mr McCurdy was joined at the announcement by Nationals’ MP Danny O’Brien,

Coalition Shadow Minister for Public Transport and Roads, who said the funding was part of a Coalition commitment to ensure at least 25 per cent of government infrastructure spending goes to regional Victoria.

“Rehgional Victoria has around 25 per cent of the population so should get 25 per cent of the spending,” Mr O’Brien said.

“At present it’s more like 13 per cent.”

Funding boon to help extend school care NORTH East schools are set to share in $17 million in grants aimed at establishing or strengthening outside school hours care provision throughout the region.

As part of State Government funding announced earlier this week, eight schools in the region will benefit from at least $75,000 a year over the next two years to support the service, with special schools and those in remote locations able to access more funding if required.

Glenrowan and Oxley primary schools will have their existing services expanded while Benalla P-12, Upper Sandy Creek Primary School, Harrietville Primary School, Wahgunyah Primary School, Osbornes Flat Primary School and Winton Primary School will all be able to establish after care services.

Northern Victoria MP Jaclyn Symes said the burden would be eased on hard-working parents as a result of the funding.

“By creating more outside school hours care services, we’re helping parents and carers to get back to work, study, or training - while ensuring their kids are cared for before and after school hours, as well as during school holidays,” she said.

The funding will also support costs including resources and equipment, setup and administration, staffing, training and transport.

Time to give to the ultimate giver IT would be hard to think of anyone who has epitomised the community spirit of the rural city in recent years as much as Alex Carmody.

His large frame and even larger smile rattling a collection tin is as familiar as the Osmotherly‘s Building tower in Murphy Street.

He has rightfully been acknowledged and honoured for more than 50 years of service to the Royal Children‘s Hospital Good Friday Appeal which he has coordinated and particpated in, whether selling AFL posters after the Grand Final or collecting money from motorists in rain, hail or shine on the CBD streets.

As you will find in Simone Kerwin‘s front page story, a terrible car accident last year has cost this champion of children his left leg and hampered his involvement in the RCH Appeal this year; hampered only mind you, he is still active from the rehabilitation unit at Wodonga Hospital.

Now Alex needs our help.

To accommadate his new lifestyle and allow him to come home, the Carmody family house he shares with wife Judy needs $20,000 worth of renovations and, in typical Alex fashion, he kept the news pretty quiet.

From the time the ambulance came to me in the Safeway carpark, the young lady who assisted while waiting for my daughter, the emergency department, intensive care unit and the Thomas Hogan Ward - all staff were lovely and I can’t thank you all enough.

You are a wonderful lot of people.

I’m home now and still getting follow-up care and treatments.

Thanks for covering cost of health forum I WISH to extend thanks to our mayor, Cr Dean Rees, for his concern and for providing the use of the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre Memorial Hall at no cost as the venue for our community health forum, held Monday, September 26 to discuss the very real and far reaching concerns that our local GPs, specialists, patients, nurses, community members and other allied health workers have with regards to current regional healthcare, including management decisions at Northeast Health Wangaratta.

Sadly, despite being formally invited, not a single board member or hospital administrator attended to answer some very probing questions.

The meeting was supported and ably chaired by our local state MP Tim McCurdy.

Dr Helen Haines, federal Independant MP for Indi also sent her apologies and support as a local citizen from Canberra.

These concerns are very real, and if not addressed, in the end, it’s the patients who lose out.

Optus store manager pleads for calm

By SIMONE KERWIN OPTUS Wangaratta managing director Wally Pasquali has pleaded with the community not to take out frustrations on staff at the local store, over a national data breach involving the telco.

Mr Pasquali, who also runs Optus stores in Wodonga, Albury, Lavington and Wagga, posted to Facebook on Tuesday, saying the breach - which saw the alleged hackers pursue a ransom payment in exchange for millions of Optus customer records - should not be seen as an opportunity to “abuse or threaten any of my team”.

“This is unacceptable and won’t be tolerated,” he said.

“It’s not their fault, and they will listen and help you, but not if you cross the line.

“We are essentially all victims here.”

Mr Pasquali said incidents of staff abuse had occurred across all his stores, and he urged locals to be mindful that staff members needed to feel safe in their workplaces.

“They are doing their best under these unprecedented circumstances, and customer aggression will not be tolerated,” he said.

“We have seen it happen, not just this week, but from time to time in our stores, where we have customers come in and get aggressive.

“The current situation has exacerbated it.

“As a business owner, I

will not tolerate any form of aggression in the retail environment; it is a workplace.

“While I certainly understand people have a range of emotions about this, it’s disappointing to see that kind of reaction towards staff.”

This week’s incident reportedly involved an alleged hacker seeking a $1 million cryptocurrency ransom, initially uploading a file of 10,000 Optus records to a data breach website on Monday, and allegedly threatening to release more if demands were not met.

The information reportedly included names, dates of birth, email addresses, driver’s licence numbers, passport numbers, Medicare numbers, phone numbers and addresses.

Although they are early career artists, each finalist has amassed an impressive list of credits and collaborations.

“The National Jazz Awards have played an important role in developing, showcasing, and nurturing Australian talent,” festival representative Dave Fuller said.

“The NJA has proven a valuable stepping stone for many past winners and finalists who have gone on to enjoy national and international success. We are thankful for Pughouse Studios providing the recording session, and Wangaratta Rural City Council for their continued support with prizemoney.”

Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Dean Rees said the awards were a unique and integral part of the festival’s existence.

“It’s fantastic to hear from the festival of such great talent emerging in these five fine finalists. I am excited to see the finals,” he said.

The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues will return to a live event for the first time since 2018 when it is held between Friday, October 28 and Sunday, October 30, with a jam-packed weekend of music set to feature international and home-grown artists, and the National Jazz Awards.

Festival aims to raise smiles

ADVOCATING FOR FUN: Nush Abikhair from Mind Australia is looking forward to Wangaratta’s Grit and Resilience Festival, which will mark World Mental Health Day on October 10.

FUN will be the aim when Wangaratta’s King George Gardens become a hive of activity for the Grit and Resilience Festival on October 10, according to Mind Australia’s Nush Abikhair.

Nush, who works in mental health outreach, said the event being held to help mark World Mental Health Day would be a great chance for the Wangaratta community to see the number of services on offer locally, and for service providers to connect and take time to consider themselves.

“We get so focused on doing our jobs and helping people, because we’re so committed to it, that we don’t often stop to have fun,” she said.

“It’s important to have some downtime, to connect with peers and have space to engage.

“I think it’s a cultural thing as much as anything; I hear so many people say things like ‘I don’t have a lunch-break’, and it’s because they are committed and passionate and want to help, but that’s when you get burn-out.

“It’s important for our own mental health and that of the people we’re assisting to ensure we take care of ourselves and engage with our community.”

professionals, but to all members of the community.

She said developing connections, both among mental health service providers and within the broader community, was vital to locals’ sense of wellbeing, and she believed it would be among the outcomes of the festival - which is being organised by the Wangaratta Grit and Resilience Program, Mind Australia and the Centre Against Violence.

“Wangaratta’s sense of community is amazing, and we need to celebrate that,” she said.

“The festival is also a chance to reduce the stigma around mental illness.

“We all experience mental health challenges, it’s a normal part of life, and there are so many organisations in this area which can assist, including a lot of new programs.

“Mental health is as important as physical health; if your arm is sore, you go to a doctor, you splint it, you hold it close.

“If your mind is sore, you seek help in the same way.

“Particularly at the moment, when we’ve lived through a pandemic, and before that bushfires; as a community, we’ve had blow after blow, and it can all add up.

“As service providers, we all have a common goal - we want a healthy community and we want to support people with those mental health challenges.

“If we work together, we are stronger than with a siloed approach.

“The festival is a chance for everyone to get a handle on what all the services do and when they may be needed.”

The Grit and Resilience Festival will involve live music, drop-in yoga sessions, giant games, a barbecue, and lots more fun between 4pm and 6pm on Monday, October 10.

Mental health and wellbeing stallholders will offer interactive displays showcasing services and supports available in the local area, all in the relaxed, informal springtime setting of the King George Gardens.

“I really want to see people smiling; we have lots of activities planned for the day, and it will be a short and sweet event over a couple of hours - it will be so worthwhile to drop in after school, grab something from the barbecue and have a chat to people,” Nush said.

“Fun is a great antidote more fun and more dancing in the streets, I say!”

Celebrating Warby-Ovens National Park green listing TO celebrate the International Union List of Protected and Conserved Areas (IUCN) Green Listing of Warby - Ovens National Park, members of the North East Canoe Club are conducting canoe tours through the heritage listed Ovens River section of the National Park.

The tours will take place on Wednesday, October 12 and Saturday, October 15 from 10am - 2pm.

Due to high water flows, the route will be decided just prior to the tour date.

Ideally, a circular route from Cameron’s Bend up through the billabongs and anabranches of Puzzle Bend and return via the main river course, will be the route.

Higher water levels may dictate a down river tour only.

Participants need to be able to swim, in clothing, for a short distance, if an emergency situation happens.

Canoes, paddles and PFDs (Personal floatation devices) can be supplied by tour organisers.

Participants will need warm clothing, wind proof/water proof jacket and shoes suitable for immersion in water.

A spare set of clothes is advisable.

Waterproof bags will be available.

WANGARATTA’S September vigil for asylum seekers and refugees held on on Murphy Street heard more than 180 honks in support for the cause last week.

The Rural Australians for Refugees group were continuing to urge the government to: - provide permanent visas for people on insecure Temporary Protection Visas (TPVs) and Safe Haven Enterprise Visas (SHEVS); - provide humanitarian visas for vulnerable Afghan people sponsored by Australians; and - support refugees and asylum seekers still stuck in PNG and Nauru to find a safe home.

The next vigil in Wangaratta will be held on Friday, October 7 from 4-5pm at the roundabout on the corner of Murphy and Faithful streets.

The Square-tailed Kite - a seasonal visitor from the north

By IAN DAVIDSON and CHRIS TZAROS OF all the birds of prey that inhabit north-east Victoria, the Square-tailed Kite is among the rarest of them all.

Seen only during the warmer months from September through to April, the Square-tailed Kite migrates to Victoria from northern parts of Australia.

This movement pattern corresponds with the migration of many other birds from northern and inland parts of the country, such as the woodswallows, which come to southern Australian woodlands to nest and breed.

It is this influx of bird life, particularly the onset of breeding, that is the reason for the Square-tailed Kites presence as they primarily feed on young birds, many of which are taken from the nest in the forest canopy.

They are even known to grasp entire nests from the foliage, taking them away with their

contents of baby birds.

The Square-tailed Kite is a large raptor with extraordinarily long wings.

When perched, the wing tips extend well beyond the tip of the tail, as seen in the accompanying photo, and the white face and rufous chest with dark streaks is a conspicuous feature.

When in flight, this species is unmistakable, with the narrow wings having long dark tips, or ‘fingers’, and a prominent square-cut tail.

Their habit of gliding effortlessly just above the tree canopy, while searching for prey, means they often catch the observer by surprise, seemingly appearing from out of nowhere.

In forested areas, they are often difficult to observe but in more lighted treed country and farmland, they can be seen clearly and their diagnostic

features are very apparent.

Like other large kites, these birds construct bulky stick nests, often returning to the previous years’ nest at the beginning of the breeding season.

After some refurbishment, the pair may re-use the old nest, or they may choose to construct a new nest in a nearby suitable site, typically a fork on a horizontal branch of a large tree.

Though both sexes participate in incubation of their eggs, the female does the lions-share whilst the male conducts most of the hunting, returning to the nest for quick visits to feed the female and the young once they hatch.

Locally, Square-tailed Kites can be seen in the Warby Ranges, Killawarra and around the Chiltern area.

If you hear the alarm calls of honeyeaters, treecreepers or other birds, look up and scan the skies.

You may be lucky enough to see one of these impressive raptors.

Twin exhibition hosts twin collectors

AS art collectors go, Wangaratta brothers Ron and Ross Aldridge are the least assuming.

Quietly spoken and modest about the sheer size of their collection, they become enthusiastic when describing each of their pieces and the diversity and high quality of Indigenous art.

Part of their collection is being welcomed to the Bright Art Gallery seven years after their last exhibition, in what is considered a rare event.

The collection features Indigenous works representing a variety of styles from Arnhem Land, the Western Desert in the Northern Territory, and from Western Australia; and although the brothers appear shy about their contribution to the community, they speak with an effusive pride when describing each piece.

“They do have Namatjira originals but are only including Namatjira-styled ones to show how it has become widespread,” Ms Wiegerinck said.

Ross was less subtle in his decision.

“Everybody knows

Namatjiras and they can be done to death, so I am putting two others of his style in the show,” he said.

was devoted to scenery painted by Western Arrernte men of the Ntaria tribal area, west of Alice Springs.

“With Hermannsburg work most of them will have faces in them so when they paint the scene they don’t lose the face with the earth,” Ron said.

A new work by Bardayal ‘Lofty’ Nadjamerrek is included in the exhibition.

“Lofty was the only artist who was allowed to go into Arnhem Land and touch up damaged rock paintings there,” Ron said.

The display is part of a

double exhibition which opens at Bright Art Gallery tomorrow and runs for four weeks.

The other show will exhibit paintings and photographs

by Alpine area artists.

“However, the uniqueness of the Aldridge exhibition is not to be missed,” Ms Wiegerinck said.

Ron paid tribute to Indigenous artists who strove to widen the diversity of their art against the common stereotype.

“Indigenous artists have moved away from the dot art and the Hermannsburg watercolours and have gone into the natural surroundings,” he said.

“So people will get a different feeling here and realise that there’s more to Aboriginal art than they really thought, that it is far more diverse.

“We exhibit that full range of diversity.”

The exhibition is being held at the Bright Art Gallery and Cultural Centre until October 31.

MOVING PICTURES: Three films by conceptual new media artist Ryan Andrew Lee which explore alternative ontologies and epistemologies that are strongly informed by First Nations people, and community, are being exhibited at the Wangaratta Art Gallery in Gallery 2. The films employ experimental film-making processes including cinema vérité and slow cinema to present contemplative observations on contemporary environmental and socio-political issues. Treescapes at Art Gallery on Ovens AN exhibition of photographs and paintings by resident artist Tanya Rose is showing at the Art Gallery on Ovens in the laneway off Murphy Street.

The Treescapes series depicts Lake Mulwala’s unique flooded red gum forest, focusing on the luminescent quality of light just as dusk falls and the reflections of the trees on the water.

The exhibition is open Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 2pm and on Monday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 4pm until October 3 and entry is free.

by Cameron Robbins AN exhibition called “Heliocentric - Recent works by Cameron Robbins” is open at the Wangaratta Art Gallery.

It features a new installation Helio Ephemera, created by the Australian contemporary artist, which was commissioned by the gallery, alongside recent works which continue Robbins’ exploration

of the dynamic energies provided by the sun, moon, wind, water and the earth’s magnetic field.

There are large and small drawings from solar devices in the artist’s studio created over the long months of lockdowns, and light drawings made within the landscape under the night sky.

STEERING A COURSE FOR AGEING WELL

ORTHEAST Health Wangaratta’s (NHW) ‘well ageing’ trial to improve the health including the mental health of seniors by assisting them live more independently took to the stage at the recent International Conference of Mental Health Nursing on the Gold Coast.

Nadia Tilson, who facilitates NHW’s Aged Care Navigation Project, was a guest speaker at the conference.

Ms Tilson’s presentation was developed and co-authored in collaboration with Dr Sue Wilson, who was the Mental Health Promotion Clinician for Older Persons, with the Albury Wodonga Early Intervention and Capability Building Unit before taking up her current position in the Strategy and Performance team of Murray PHN. “With our common goal to promote well ageing, Sue and I started meeting up to discuss important topics on how best promote mental health and wellbeing in our community,” Ms Tilson said.

“Working with Gateway Health and RCoW’s Grit & Resilience team and working around periods of community lockdown we organised events to improve awareness of elder abuse and another to promote R U OK day.

“In June 2021, Sue and I decided to put together an ‘abstract’ on the project that I have been working on with the approval of COTA (Council on the Ageing) and NHW. “We sent it off to Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN who organise the conference) for consideration, it was accepted and we were invited to go and present.”

After a few postponements the conference finally took place from September 7 to 9.

Ms Tilson said her key message to the conference was to highlight how we are an ageing population and, as the population grows, so can we expect the demand for older persons mental health services to also increase.

“She asked those in attendance to consider - if we are already struggling with the numbers of older persons needing mental health support and treatment how will we meet this growing demand?” she said.

“Both Royal commissions into aged and mental health services have both made recommendations aiming to improve access and ensure individuals can find and reach the

“The program that I have facilitated through COTA’s Aged Care Navigator role does exactly that! It has provided an important service to the older members of our community.

“We launched a ‘Well Ageing Information Hub’ hosted by a roster of trained volunteers who provide peer support navigation.

“My volunteers are able to answer questions face to face about what services are available, who provides them and how to apply.

“They help members of the community access My Aged Care, either by phone or website, they can explain the process of an aged care assessment and how to prepare for one and they can advise where people can get extra help if they need it.

“I also implemented a successful monthly public lecture series with a range of guest speakers to help engage individuals with key services and community advocates to again help them understand and navigate the age care system.”

Some of the topics have included:  the importance of exercise;  caring for your mental wellbeing and how to source help when needed;  senior rights;  advance care planning and why this is vitally important for your family;  making a will;  how to use modern technologies, and  the importance of staying connected.

Ms Tilson said that with the help of the John Richards Institute and RCoW, they started their service with the WAVE initiative through which they asked the community what the most well supported older person looked like.

“They responded by telling us - that they are cared for and

connected, they participate in their community, they are mobile and have choice, they are valued, content, safe and secure, but most of all, they had access to information and services. They also told us that they understand that it is the older persons responsibility to seek information, but that they need assistance and advice to find that information (John Richards Centre, 2019, pp.

8-9),” Ms Tilson said.

The presentation was warmly received at the conference and there has been great interest for the project to be taken up in other health precincts around the country.

“It was received way better than I expected,” Ms Tilson said.

“People were really engaged and asked lots of questions after I spoke.

“I had professionals walking up to me afterwards congratulating me and asking how they can set up a navigator role in their area.

“Based on our experience here, there is lots of evidence that it benefits the community.”

Ms Tilson said one of the other benefits of attending the conference was for the opportunity to network with clinicians from around Australasia and as far away as Canada - she said ‘it was definite highlight.’

“I made so many new professional friends with likeminded ambitions in the industry,” she said.

“I learnt so many new innovative processes and methods.

“It helped me look at new ways and to think differently to improve our healthcare system as well as deepening my passion to continue to work at improving how we/I care for and support those living with mental illness and mental health problems.”

In addition to her conference appearance, all abstracts from

the event have been published in the September 2022 Supplement 1 Issue of the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing - a first time author. A summary of Ms Tilson’s paper ‘Navigating older persons services - an adventure in chaos’ is available in print.

Ms Tilson noted her thanks to Dr Sue Wilson.

“Sue has been my mentor, without her, I would never of done anything like this before,” Ms Tilson said.

“I am very grateful to her for encouraging me to step outside my comfort zone and to try something new.”

espite the project’s success, the funding ends in December and as of January 1, 2023, the Aged Care Navigator program will be replaced by a more targeted Care Finder program, a result of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Safety and Quality.

In Victoria, the implementation of the new Mental Health Regional Boards and the integration of the Older Persons Mental Health into the new model of Adult and Older Persons Mental Health Services, will see access and navigation support provided through the local area hubs.

“From my experience, I can only reassure you what a difference it makes linking people with a navigator as early in their care pathway as possible because, for older persons - navigation services are intimately linked with the healthy ageing agenda,” Ms Tilson said.

“It has been an extraordinary experience working with the older people in my community.

“Some have been diagnosed with chronic diseases including mental illness, some live with or develop symptomatology as they age and some live free of disease.

“Each one of their stories has

been as unique as they are.

“I have helped in big ways and in small - whatever services they have needed, I have worked with them and their families to connect them to.

“There is no manual for us as clinicians on how to navigate the system in which we work, and there is certainly no manual for older persons and their families to help them navigate in and through the aged care services they now find themselves in need of.

“Too many well-meaning services are running their own systems compounding the complexity of the pathways into and through aged care services.”

Ms Tilson said she had even struggled navigating the incessant number and different types of forms and systems that have been built to screen, assess, plan, implement and track service need and delivery.

“Through those struggles though, at the end of the day I can leave it all behind and go home. Unfortunately, they cannot,” she said.

“Every individual journey has been different, as the Aged Care Navigator program comes to an end and I reflect on my own and my clients’ experiences, the most important thing I have learnt is that it’s been the relationship that mattered.

“Navigators address the anxiety, confusion and disconnect that are the consequences of our complex and fragmented health and aged care system.

“This role is fundamentally a health promotion role, we help ensure, at the very least, the system doesn’t hinder, and at best, the system supports an individual, to maintain their physical and psychological integrity, as they journey through older age and when they need it, the aged care system.

“In effect, to help make their health last.”

2023 HYUNDAI PALISADE HIGHLANDER

■ LOOK AT ME: There’s nothing subtle about the styling of the Hyundai Palisade large SUV/people mover.

By EWAN KENNEDY HYUNDAI Palisade is a large Korean-built SUV, or people mover to use the older definition for a vehicle in this class.

It has received major upgrades as well as substantial styling changes for the 2023 model year, so it’s worth us taking a look at it again with a full road test.

A major feature in the Palisade is the Hyundai Bluelink system that can be connected to the vehicle from anywhere via a smartphone.

Owners can send planned routes and receive emergency assistance automatically after an accident.

They can even remotely lock or start their car with their preferred climate settings, therefore have their Palisade sitting waiting for them all warmed up and ready to go.

STYLING Palisade is a large vehicle with styling that is in the look-at-me class - nothing subtle here. Styling changes for 2023 include a parametric shield grille design flanked by vertically stacked LED headlights.

The Highlander variant we reviewed has exclusive design touches, including a satin chrome finish to the grille with matching logo badge and skid plate finishes.

There are hidden-type turn signals, body-coloured cladding and exclusive 20inch wheels with a 15-spoke turbine design.

INTERIOR Hyundai Palisade can be optioned with either a sev-

en-seat or eight-seat layout, the former offering two individual captain-type chairs in the middle row.

This was our test vehicle and it has a real feeling of luxury of the type normally only offered in a limousine.

Additional luxuries for Highlander variants include heated and ventilated front and second-row seats now for both seven- and eightseat variants.

Highlander also gains exclusive interior finishes, quilted seat inserts, quilted and perforated door trim inserts, suede headlining and stainless-steel front speaker grilles, and door/cargo area scuff plates.

Every Highlander variant is available with Black Nappa leather with luxury quilting and Gloss Black/Pinstripe trim, with the further options of Warm Grey and Dark Khaki Nappa leather with unique wood-look trim dependent on the exterior colour.

INFOTAINMENT A 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia system is now standard on all Palisade models.

Features include wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; six USB-C and one USB-A ports; Bluetooth message playback; embedded satellite navigation with live traffic updates; wireless smartphone charging; and a voice memo function with up to 70 minutes recording time.

There’s also AM/FM and DAB+ digital radio although the latter cuts out when driving through cuttings or when there’s multiple trees in the centre island or simply in country driving.

The 12-speaker Infinity audio system in our Palisade produced excellent sound quality and could be adjusted to suit our needs.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The recently revised Hyundai Palisade is offered with a choice of a 3.8-litre petrol V6 with front-wheel drive, or a 2.2-litre turbodiesel with four-wheel drive.

Both have a recently updated eight-speed automatic transmission.

Our test vehicle was the turbo-diesel.

SAFETY Hyundai Palisade has lapsash safety belts for all occupants.

This isn’t as common as it should be because too many competitors have a lap-only belt in the centre-rear spot.

An expanded suite of SmartSense driver assistance and advanced active safety features is used in the 2023 Palisade.

It now incorporates forward collision-avoidance assist with junction turning function, intelligent speed limit assist, a multi anti-collision braking system.

There’s a surround view monitor, a reverse light guide function as well as reverse parking collision-avoidance assist.

The latter a real bonus when you’re reversing a large people mover out of a tight spot in a shopping centre.

It was also handy in the underground carpark in our apartment block where roof pillars and other vehicles are pretty close.

There’s a natural language server-based voice control and server-based connected routing navigation.

DRIVING Getting into the front and two middle-row seats is easy.

As you would expect the rearmost seats are a bit of squeeze to get in and out.

But as that’s the area normally used by the littlies in your family there’s little hassle.

And the juniors are more than happy to be as far from mum and dad as possible...

Yet again I had problems seeing the information that’s displayed on the windscreen.

My polarising sunglasses could not see it unless I tilted my head slightly to one side or the other.

Obviously, I could look at the instruments in their normal position, but that’s a little less safe than having a view of the forward traffic and the dials at the same time.

Other car brands have solved this problem so it’s time Hyundai did.

Palisade is impressive in the way that it drives, all the more so when you remember this is a five-metre-long vehicle where its main aim in life is to carry up to eight people.

It’s certainly not sporty but you do feel that it wants to follow your directions through the steering wheel and throttle pedal.

There’s some bumpthump over the joints on the road but we have felt worse.

And some road roar on concrete surfaces, but on

bitumen it’s nice and refined.

Fuel consumption was in the nine to 11 litres per 100 kilometres around town in the suburbs and on hilly and winding roads.

This dropped dramatically to just five to seven litres during easy paced driving on level roads and on 110 kp/h motorways.

SUMMING UP Hyundai Palisade is a reasonably priced, high-quality people mover that’s does everything it’s intended to do with plenty of aplomb.

It’s significantly cheaper than upmarket European vehicles in the same class and certainly deserves a place on your short list of models to consider.

Cat curfew in community hands MYRTLEFORD’S pussycats could face a curfew.

The local Landcare and Sustainability group is surveying the community for support of a cat curfew.

The survey has currently received just over 200 responses, showing 85 per cent of respondents support a curfew in some form, with over half supporting a 24 hour curfew.

Just under 50 per cent of respondents said they own a cat.

A cat curfew, if implemented, is likely to be shire-wide.

By BRODIE EVERIST TRIBUTES have continued to flow for Tawonga resident and adventurer Mathew Farrell, who was tragically killed when his plane crashed in dense bushland near Tallangatta on Sunday, September 18.

As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash, friend Brad Harris said Mr Farrell has been remembered with “hundreds of messages” of condolence from those that knew him.

“It’s lovely to hear all of those messages come in and know that he made people smile, and they loved being with him,” Mr Harris said.

“But it also reminds us that that he’s gone.”

Tragedy struck the 42-yearold when his single-engine Jabiru 230 crashed after leaving Mount Beauty Airport for Wollongong around midday.

According to Mount Beauty Airport Management Association committee member Mark Bland, who saw Mr Farrell’s

light aircraft take off, it had been raining that day, but the weather had eased when Mr Farrell left the airport.

An alert was raised around 2pm when the plane failed to arrive at Wollongong and an extensive ground and aerial search was launched, with Victoria Police’s finding the crash shortly after 10am on Monday in dense bushland west of Lucyvale.

Mr Harris said Mr Farrell had been engaged to fiancé Karen Waller for around 18 months, but due to COVID-19 and other circumstances they had not yet married.

“They were by far the most perfectly suited couple I’ve ever met in my life,” he said.

“They already called each other their wife and their husband - they felt like they were married already.

“They were both adventurers, and loved camping and climbing and backcountry skiing and snowboarding - all these incredible things.

“For me, the biggest tragedy of all of this is they only got a

year and a half together.”

According to Mr Harris, the couple moved to the Kiewa Valley around 18 months ago and bought a house in Tawonga South.

He said both were known in the community as passionate paraglider pilots.

Mr Farrell was a skilled cinematographer and received tributes online last week from filmmaking groups and actors.

The Tasmanian branch of the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) said on Facebook that Mr Farrell will be “fondly remembered”.

“Always good company, passionate and energetic member of the ACS, we shall miss him,” the post said.

According to Mr Harris, Mr Farrell had worked on a range of projects, including documentaries, TV shows, commercials and short films, and was known for lifting the mood during shoots.

“He was very accomplished and also really, really well-loved on set,” he said.

Round one’s here for Wangaratta Warriors

By WILLSON MACK ROUND one of the Country Basketball League season is here and the Wangaratta Warriors will kick off 2022/23 this weekend with a double-header.

The men will meet Wodonga Wolves on Saturday night at Wodonga Leisure Centre, followed by a clash with Mansfield at Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The women will tip their season off against Wodonga before the men’s game.

Wangaratta Basketball Inc president Adam Maher said the Warriors are set for the 2022/23 season.

“We’ve been training Mondays and Tuesdays over the past few weeks and we’ll train again Friday night before the weekend,” Maher said.

“We’re still looking for a coach for the men’s so I’ll coach this weekend and then hopefully we’ll have that sorted next week.

“Scott Butler will coach the women’s, he’s coached at various levels but is ready to give the senior women’s a go.”

Maher admitted both sides will be running with young squads this season.

“We’ve got a good bunch of boys and girls playing this year but they’ll both be young teams,” he said.

“The likes of Taylah and Georgie Reidy have come back and then we’ve got some other good girls like Olivia Holmes, Mikeely Gotytschling, Ebony Norris, Zara Berry and Liv Storer said she’ll play when she can as well.

“In the men’s both the Wright boys (Lloyd and Liam) are playing, my sons Sam and Charlie, Andy Robinson will add some experience and Max Mickleson from Yarrawonga is another one who’s returning to the Warriors.

“You can’t produce miracles in a year but I think if we can keep these groups together for two to three years we’ll see improvement.”

Wodonga looks a strong team in both the women’s and men’s grades this weekend and no doubt the Warriors will be up against it in both grades.

“Wodonga are always tough,” Maher said.

“I think they’ll be tough in both grades and then Mansfield for the men on Sunday will be another challenge.

“Mansfield have got a few players out of the North East Bushrangers program so they’ll be a handy side as well.”

ROLLING READY: With Wangaratta set to host preparation matches for the T20 World Cup in a matter of days, some have questioned whether a suitable pitch can be raised, given recent weather. Rainfall in and around the Rural City of Wangaratta over recent weeks has left the pitch at the Bill O’Callaghan Oval a lush green, with the outfield still quite wet.

Rural City of Wangaratta director community and infrastructure, Marcus Goonan, said while weather is always a factor, there is no concern at this stage about the readiness of the pitch. The three day tournament kicks off on Wednesday at 10am, with Scotland taking on Melbourne Renegades Academy, to be followed

by Namibia playing Melbourne Stars Academy at 2pm.

FIFTY-five local gallopers have been accepted into Sunday’s meet at the Wangaratta Turf Club.

Chris Davis, Ben Brisbourne, Ledger Racing, Dan McCarthy, Andrew Dale, Craig Weeding and Allen Fitzgerald will all saddle runners up at their home track.

It’s a massive boost to the turf club considering Racing Victoria only announced the race day was going ahead at Wangaratta on Wednesday.

Davis said he welcomed the news with open arms.

“We had horses nominated at Bendigo, Kyneton which got transferred to Pakenham and Echuca which got moved to Ballarat,” Davis said “So to now be able to walk across the road on a sunny day is just great.

“All of our horses are glowing at the moment, we’re really happy with how they’re going so hopefully we can grab a winner.”

Davis has a team of 14 gallopers accepted as a starter or emergency into the massive 10 race card and labelled High Resolution (race seven), Benefique (race six) and Villianaire (race four) as his best chances.

High Resolution grabbed back-to-back placings when he ran at Wangaratta on August 8 and 20, while Benefique also ran a third place finish at the August 20 meeting.

“High Resolution has had a great last few starts, he’s feeling a million dollars,” Davis said.

“We’re just trying to stop him jump out of his skin at the moment but his last start (fifth at Echuca) was a cracking run.

“Benefique will run in a (benchmark) 64 and he’ll be right in it, he drew a good barrier (three) so he’s ready to go.”

Newbold to stay on at Greta

A TRUE BLUE: Greg Newbold will continue to coach Greta’s seniors through the 2023 Ovens and King football season.

GRETA senior coach Greg Newbold will stay on in the top job with the Blues for season 2023.

Newbold, entering his seventh season in the role, recommitted to the club this week after a strong year by the Blues in both grades, with their seniors and reserves finishing in the top four.

“We just had a conversation and it led to if I wanted to continue coaching - they were happy for me to continue coaching and I was happy to continue coaching,” he said.

“Everything we do is to look at what the future might look like.

“If I felt or the club felt that we needed to go in a different direction coachingwise, then we’d do that, but I’m pretty happy to continue.

“The most important thing is the footy side of

the club is in a really good, strong state going forward, that’s how we looked at it and I was very happy to continue doing it.

“I was also very happy to hand over to someone else if that’s what the club felt was the necessary thing to do.”

The Blues have been flying under the radar in recent years, stringing consistent form together through developing their own list rather than relying on big name signings.

“We’re continually growing each year without landing high-profile recruits,” Newbold said.

“We’re a very even team

and we’ll continue to improve and we think we’re closer than we’ve ever been, so I think if we can just improve again a bit more organically within the group, but also add a handful of players to increase our depth then I think we’ll be in a pretty strong position.

“We’ve had our players recommit for next year which is really good - I think if there are any losses, there will be very few losses which generally is the way it is at Greta.

“We certainly have spoken to players about coming on board, so hopefully that will all come to fruition.

“The players are pretty keen to kick off again in November and have a few sessions before Christmas, just to get back together again and moving and prepare ourselves for a really strong season next year.”

The Wangaratta and District Cricket Association will hold a muster day for all women and junior players interested next Sunday from 10am at Wareena Park in Wangaratta.

WDCA female cricket liaison Andrea Belci said a dedicated open age female short-form competition is the natural next step up for female cricket in the region.

“The last couple of years we’ve entered an open female team in the Goulburn/Murray (league), and last year we won the grand final, and this year we haven’t entered a team,” she said.

“We’ve got a lot of interest, we’ve got participants that regularly play in Melbourne in the premier league, we have participants that play at a junior youth level, and if you’re wanting to play female cricket you tend to have to travel away.

“I think it’s a good time for the WDCA to look at forming our own competition and growing that.

“Our idea is we’ll play four or

five matches before Christmas and we’ll play a representative game against potentially Cricket Albury Wodonga, and then after Christmas play another four or five games then play a rep game against Goulburn/Murray.

“Hopefully we can start with two teams and we’ll be able to grow that as we go along.

“We’re in a position where we can really start to do that.”

The plan is to get teams and training sessions sorted as soon as possible, with the season set to start in late October.

required to get the league underway, but felt there was more interest in the area than that.

“That’s the minimum that we’re required to have in our teams, but if we can go 11 a side we’ll go 11 a side,” she said.

“If we can get two eight a side teams going that would be great, if we can get more we’ll go with more.

“We’d be over the moon if we could get four sides, but we’re just going to start small and continually build.”

THE Wangaratta Turf Club is off and racing this Sunday, October 2.

Racing Victoria have added a new meeting to the race schedule and Sean Barrett said the club is very thankful to be hosting it here in Wangaratta.

“It’s a great result for our local trainers and owners across the region, and for our valued members that missed the opportunity to attend the abandoned meeting in September,” Barrett said.

“It’ll be a great opportunity for people to enjoy a day out at the races, the weather looks good and it’ll be a fully operational race day.

“At this stage gates will open at 12:30pm, with the opening race at approximately 1:30pm.

“If additional races are added to the day then this timing may come forward.”

Entry to the racecourse will be complimentary, making it the perfect opportunity to bring along some guests to enjoy the fabulous facilities on offer.

Dining options will be available to order from the menu and drinks may be purchased from the bar.

TAB facilities will be available in the Grand Oaks Room and the TAB building.

Tuning in to kids - emotionally intelligent parenting GATEWAY Health provides a range of services to support the health and wellbeing of children and their families.

This includes individual parenting support and group-based parent education programs and information sessions for parents and carers of children aged from 0 to 18 years.

Group programs run each school term.

During November 2022, Tuning in to Kids will run for residents of Wangaratta and surrounding areas.

“This program aims to help parents and carers understand their child’s experience and connect with and support their

child,” Terri Spence, Gateway Health Program Manager Child and Family Health said.

“We work with parents and carers to look at managing meltdowns, tuning in to children’s emotions to help manage behaviour, emotion coaching to help children understand and regulate their emotions, problem solving and the many different styles of parenting.”

Tuning in to Kids is a free program available for parents and carers of children aged from 2 to 10 years.

The program will be held in Wangaratta from 10am12pm each Wednesday from November 2 to 30.

Alternatively, you can join the online sessions which will be held online from 6pm-8pm each Tuesday from November 1 to 29.

Festival of resilience MARKING World Mental Health Day on Monday, October 10, the Grit and Resilience Festival will run from 4pm to 6pm in the King George Gardens in Wangaratta.

Offering a great chance for the community to connect, develop its resilience, and learn more about the services available locally, the festival will involve live music, drop-in yoga sessions, giant games, a barbecue, and plenty more fun during the afternoon and early evening.

Resilience Program, Mind Australia and the Centre Against Violence have partnered to host the event, which aims to be lots of fun.

Sarah Blatchford from the Grit and Resilience Program said the program’s team had been keen to mark World Mental Health Day in some way.

“This event is a lot of the work we do coming together in one place, and we really wanted it to be fun,” she said.

“We have encouraged providers to have something interactive as

part of their display, and we’re looking forward to seeing their creative ideas.”

Along with a range of interactive activities, the festival will feature more than 20 mental health and wellbeing stallholders providing an opportunity to find out about the services and supports available in the local area - all in a relaxed, informal setting.

What has changed with today’s hearing aids?

OVER the years, we have come to expect that technological developments will occur in many fields and this is certainly true of hearing aids.

A century ago, the size and lack of benefit of hearing devices such as ear trumpets might have been the usual complaints.

Although the ear trumpets might look great in our collection of antique hearing aids, they did not provide real benefit to the user.

Today, advertisements of ‘digital hearing aids’ still occur, but the fully digital hearing aid has been around for about 25 years so this is no longer special.

What’s happened since then?

Most recently, the two major advances have been Bluetooth connectivity and re-chargeability.

The advent of Bluetooth to provide a clearer sound of a mobile phone or television directly in the ears has been a game changer for many clients.

Likewise, for people with dexterity problems, no longer needing to worry about changing batteries has been really helpful.

Using rechargeable hearing aids may also be important for people who are environmentally conscious.

Probably the most obvious change to the appearance of hearing aids is the impact of miniaturisation, allowing the aids to be smaller.

TIMES HAVE CHANGED: Things have progressed significantly since the days of the old ear trumpet.

The ‘look’ of the hearing aid has also been affected by improvements in the shape of the aids as well as the availability of

different colours.

Water and dust resistance have improved with the use of nanotechnology to provide a

barrier between the outside world and the delicate components inside.

Hearing aids should not

squeal when correctly inserted into the ear.

Improvements in feedback cancellation, which reduces the likelihood of squealing feedback in most situations, has led to openfit hearing aids.

These aids are very helpful for people who have a mild to moderate hearing loss.

Our clients are also happy to experience a reduction in occlusion (hearing their own voice in the ears when the canals are blocked) with the open-fit hearing aids.

Our clients are often surprised that their hearing aids provide helpful information about how long they have been worn, whether the volume has been changed and the time spent in each of many different listening environments.

This is called datalogging, and is particularly helpful in guiding your audiologist to make changes which may help you to hear better.

Interestingly, the majority of these developments in hearing aids are available in all models of aids, from the least to the most expensive.
