Looking ahead with confidence
LOCALS should look forward with confidence to 2024, according to Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Dean Rees. As the current council enters the final year of its term, with elections to be held in October, Cr Rees - now the municipality’s longest-serving mayor - said there was still “a lot to get done”. “We will get some projects completed, and we’ll start others which will be a legacy to the work of the current council,” he said. “I think it will be a year of consolidation.” Cr Rees said key focuses

in 2024 would include sewerage works which will enable the development of subdivisions in Wangaratta’s north-west and south, and hopefully the progression of social housing on the former Ovens College site in Greta Road. “It would supply in excess of 200 homes, to boost affordable housing in
Wangaratta,” he said. “We also hope to see the release of more industrial land in the next six to 12 months, which would provide opportunities for more businesses.” Cr Rees said planned improvements to the city’s entries on Tone Road and at North Wangaratta would have Wangaratta looking even more attractive. “You never get a second chance at making a first impression, so having a pretty town as visitors arrive adds

to our position as a very liveable city,” he said. The first new major works local residents will see and need to navigate in 2024 will be an Australian Rail Track Corporation project, rather than a council one, as the Green Street bridge closes for six months from January 8. “It has to happen, and it’s going to look so much better and make pedestrian access better in that area,” Cr Rees said. Council will lodge a
funding application with the Federal Government in mid-January, seeking $4 million for the development of a community hub and an intergenerational play and exercise area on the former Olympic Pool site on the corner of Swan Street and Sisely Avenue. If successful, council would contribute $4 million to the project, which is the first stage of a masterplan aiming to revitalise the Wareena Park area. ■ Continued page 4
