those studying Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.

“It’s fabulous, and money well spent,” Ms Tierney said.

“Apart from being what they'll see when they enter the industry, it creates greater efficiency, because they can get a lot more work done here

on campus, and can be in the workforce sooner.”

The equipment will also be available for those with prior veterinary experience looking to upskill for the future.

GOTAFE currently has 21 students involved in the vet nursing course, and the new equipment offers

scope for those numbers to expand to 40, which will help meet growing demand in the veterinary sector.

This demand is expected to rise by more than 13 per cent next year, an increase which GOTAFE trainer Amy Campion said was due largely to the mental

strain of the occupation and the impacts of COVID-19 creating a current shortage of vets.

“The mental health side is something we do work on with students, to ensure they are prepared for their career ahead,” she said.

Henning’s life-changing initiative helps children DISABLED children in developing countries will have access to 10 vital wheelchairs in the near future, courtesy of fundraising efforts led by a locally-based German exchange student.

Having arrived in Australia in the middle of 2022 as part of Rotary Exchange, Beechworth-based Henning Goertzen’s project saw him raise $2500, which will see the manufacture of 10 specialised wheelchairs as part of the Wheelchairs for Kids program.

The Perth-based initiative sees the development of adaptable wheelchairs which are able to ‘grow’ with their owners.

Rotary Club of Appin Park Wangaratta youth director Bev Maher said the program had the capacity to create meaningful change for many in developing countries.

“This enables those children, who would otherwise spend their lives crawling around on the ground, the ability to become mobile via the aid of the wheelchair

and lead a much more active way of life and be able to participate fully in their communities,” she said. “(Henning) is a great ambassador for Rotary, his family, and his country.”

Alice saddled up with jockey aspirations

ALICE Kennedy has grown up around horses and the 16 year old has her heart set on becoming a jockey.

She began riding at four years old on the neighbours’ Shetland pony, and the passion developed further after the family moved from Wangaratta to a farm and her Mum, Vicki Robinson, bought her a horse when she was seven.

“I just kept on getting horses after that,” she said.

Alice decided she wanted to become a jockey around a year ago after seeing another female jockey compete and since then has been training with Wangaratta’s Ben Brisbourne to join the jockey apprentice system of Victoria.

“I decided to become a jockey after my first track ride and then

I saw how well Hannah Edgely was doing and I thought, maybe that could be me someday,” she said.

In order to become one of only five or six jockey apprentices in Victoria, applicants have to participate in training days before being chosen.

According to Mr Brisbourne this is great a opportunity for any young person who enjoys horse riding and aspires to be a jockey.

“It’s a good system were they can get rewarded financially at a young age if they can get the support they need to get into it which we’re happy to do,” he said.

Mr Brisbourne has been helping Alice to achieve this goal and said she has been great to work with.

“She’s an extremely hard working young lady who has a goal and is working towards it,” he said.

Alice trains with Mr Brisbourne every day from Monday to Saturday, getting to the track at 4:30am each morning.

“First, we come in and then we get our first lot of horses ready,” Alice said.

“Then we do a couple of laps of the track, it’s like that the whole morning just getting on the horses and going out.

“It’s a lot of work but it’s also rewarding.”

Before deciding to become a jockey, Alice participated in showjumping competitions, competing in pony club and Equestrian Australia events.

“I’ve won a championship in pony club and a couple of reserves for pony club as well,” she said.

“I enjoy the adrenaline rush you feel when you’re on a horse and the connection you can have with certain horses.”

FOR the first time ever, CDP Theatre Producers are kicking-off a national tour in Wangaratta, with the staging of Mr Stink this week.

The play, based on the award-winning book

by David Walliams, comes to life on stage for children 6-12 and parents tomorrow at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre (WPACC).

The Wangaratta Players Youth Group enjoyed an exclusive backstage look at this charming original Australian adaptation play on Monday, as part of the show’s first national tour since 2017.

They were able to meet some of the main characters, inspect the stage, and get an appreciation of what it takes to produce the live show.

For those unfamiliar with the heart-warming and comical story, it all starts when Chloe, just about the loneliest girl in the world, makes friends with Mr Stink, the local tramp.

Sure he smells a bit, but he’s the only person who’s ever been nice to Chloe.

So, when Mr Stink needs a place to stay, Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed.

Now Chloe’s got to make sure no one finds out her secret, but she’s about to learn that some secrets have a way of leading to disaster.

And speaking of secrets, there just might be more to Mr Stink than meets the eye.

The team behind The Midnight Gang, The Gruffalo and The 13-, 26-, 52-, 78- & 91-Storey Treehouses return with this touching, twisted and hilarious, and very smelly tale.

Price changes slated for WSAC

By STEVE KELLY ENTRY and membership fees at Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre are set to change, with councillors asked to approve a new pricing and category model at last night's council meeting.

The price change will coincide with the opening of the new gym at the mega sports complex and current fees and membership options are slated to change to improve customer understanding, flexibility and accessibility.

The changes also seek to ultimately attract and grow

memberships while addressing recent operational cost increases.

The new membership options of 'pool + gym' and 'pool + group fitness' only are expected to make memberships more affordable for community members according to the set of services they choose to use.

Better value options for families in the outdoor pool would also be activated.

Adult membered swimmers wanting pool only access will pay $20 per fortnight compared to the current $25.50, and a new option ‘gym

or group fitness with pool’ will cost $40 per fortnight.

Full centre access memberships will rise from $42.50 to $50 per fortnight.

Several concession prices will drop, with pool membership down 31.4 per cent to just $14 a fortnight, and gym or group fitness with pool just $28 per fortnight.

Non-membered patrons will still be able to purchase single entry or 10-visit passes.

A single entry pool visit for an individual adult will rise from $7.50 to $8.30, concession up 20 cents to $6, while a family will cost $20.50.

An adult 10-visit pool entry will rise by $10.80 to $76.50, a 10-visit casual gym session will increase by $9 to $189, and a 5-visit personal training pack will jump $10 to cost $180.

Not all prices will rise with a 10-visit group fitness class to remain the same price at $162, while concession prices will fall.

The new gym is set to open on April 27 (pending construction) and its footprint will be double the size of the former gym space and there will be brand new and upgraded equipment throughout.

“Prices will be adjusted to cover significantly increased costs from general inflation (for example utilities and chemicals) where required, while seeking to minimise any increases as much as possible,” the council officer’s report read.

“Increasing the concession discount rate on memberships to 30 per cent will also enhance accessibility for all community members and in acknowledge some pricing increases.

“From a financial perspective, the pricing changes in no means set out to

increase profit on an individual user-basis, rather to contribute to the overall financial performance by growing membership.

“By building flexibility into the membership tiers and improving family and concession discount rates, council is seeking to support any WSAC community members experiencing financial hardship and to keep sports and fitness activities accessible for all.”

The changes were reviewed by an independent industry expert for industry benchmarking.

Ms Campion came to the trainer’s role from industry, and said students progressing through the GOTAFE course were extremely well-prepared for work, both with the help of the well-equipped learning facilities at GOTAFE and through the 240 hours of placement they were required to complete.

“They will be industryready, and will have no problem getting a job,” she said.

Among those relishing the chance to utilise the $160,000 worth of equipment at Tone Road are Steph Fordham, who travels from Holbrook two days a week for the course, Wangaratta-born Jade McDonald, who is able to live at home while studying for her dream job, and Bree-Anna Drummond, who is from Myrtleford and set to move to Wangaratta shortly.

All three said they had been able to consider pursuing vet nursing because

of the State Government’s Free TAFE scheme, which offers a range of courses including Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.

Without Free TAFE, the course would have cost $18,000, but this has been reduced to just $1400 to $1500 for materials in the vet nursing course.

“Vet nursing is something I’ve wanted to do since I was six years old,” Ms McDonald said.

“I have a strong passion for animals, and would love to have a mixed practice and emergency practice. “(Without Free TAFE), I would have waited years to study, but now I’m able to do it.”

She said the scheme, coupled with assistance programs provided through GOTAFE, helped with travel to work placements, ensuring she would be wellprepared by the time she graduated in November.

Ms Tierney said the Free TAFE scheme had been fully embraced by Victorians.

Help share stories of Bangka Island nurses

By BELINDA HARRISON IN collaboration with the Australian College of Nursing, the ACN Foundation is calling for family, friends and colleagues to share stories and reflections of Lieutenant Colonel Vivian Bullwinkel AO, MBE, ARRC, ED, FNM, FRCNA and the 21 nurses, including Cheshunt’s Dorothy Elmes, who lost their lives at the Bangka Island Massacre in 1942 in one of the worst atrocities of World War II. ACN CEO, Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward, said that it is important that the Bangka Island nurses’ courage, leadership and professional

skills continue to have a legacy in Australia today.

“We are keeping the memory of these nurses alive by encouraging all family, friends and colleagues of these heroic women to contact us and share their stories,” Adjunct Professor Ward said.

“The women endured exceptionally trying conditions in the face of death.

“Even in their final moments, they stayed true to their commitment to care for others, with several supporting their injured colleagues walk into the water before their tragic death.

“We want to ensure that their legacy is not forgotten, and that Australians will

continue to be inspired by them.

“It’s important we link the past, present and future for us to remember the sacrifice, service and leadership of these Australian nurses and their role within the Australian Army Nursing Service.”

Sister Dorothy ‘Buddy’ Elmes was born in Armidale, Victoria, in 1914 and was often known as ‘Buddy’ to her friends.

She spent most of her life in Melbourne and Cheshunt and was often described as outgoing, confident and with a quirky sense of humour.

In 1935 she began training as a nurse at Corowa Community Hospital, where she graduated four years later y

and was described as ‘one of our best trainees’ by her matron.

She was 27 when she died on Bangka Island.

Circus inspires some pretty active primary school students Wednesday, March 27, 2013

By ANITA McPHERSON KIDS at Yarrunga Primary School are getting into the spirit of the circus, as they prepare to join a number of local schools seeing the Flying Fruit Fly Circus perform at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre today.

But learning to balance, roll and keep fit are nothing new to the students at Yarrunga.

“Gymnastics is a regular part of the school’s physical education program, with children from prep to grade six all taking part,” said assistant principal, Judy Byrne.

The school’s physical education teacher, Gary O’Keefe, said the kids were currently involved in mini-trampoline work and tumbling, and his hour and a half sessions were one of the most popular at the school.

“It’s all about flexibility, mobility and learning about spatial aware-

ness, knowing where they are in relation to others,” said Mr O’Keefe.

“Some of the preps are already able to do a full somersault and land on their feet.”

He said the aim of the physical education program was to get kids involved in sport for the rest of their lives, by introducing them to as wide a range of different activities as possible, and to encourage participation in teams.

Students are looking forward to seeing the Flying Fruit Fly Circus take to the stage today, and it’s hoped the highly-trained young stars and their displays of trapeze, juggling all kinds of extraordinary circus skills, may just inspire a few potential new acrobatics.

But Mr O’Keefe said you don’t have to be a star to benefit from getting physical.

“What’s important is for kids to get active, get out in the fresh air and just get involved,” he said.

Need for more social housing MISSION Australia has called on the state and federal governments to commit to building more social and affordable homes, after recent census data showed more than 30,000 people across the state were without a safe and secure place to call home.

The data, released as part of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census, reflected some 30,660 people were facing homelessness, a 24 per cent increase on 2016 figures, with the majority experiencing hidden homelessness in overcrowded dwellings or couch surfing with friends.

Mission Australia’s Victorian state director, Nada Nasser, said a multitude of factors had driven the homelessness spike.

“I’m not surprised that Victoria’s homelessness figures have increased to more than 30,000,” she said.

“The severe shortage of social and affordable housing, a private rental market that is extremely unaffordable across metro and regional Victoria, and soaring cost of living are accelerating the housing and homelessness crisis.

“Safe and secure housing provides a stable base from which children can attend school, adults can work, people can be healthy and communities can thrive.”

According to the data, a spike in those living in boarding houses (8599 in 2021 up from 4406 in 2016) or other temporary lodgings (1583 in 2021 up from 108 in 2016) had largely driven the increase in homelessness, with 30 per cent of homeless individuals living in overcrowded housing.

Some 13 per cent of the homeless population is aged 55 years or older, while around 123 young people between the ages of 12 and 18 are couch surfing on a given night.

“Those on the lowest and even moderate incomes are increasingly left without an affordable and secure home to live in,” Ms Nasser said.

“The ongoing lack of appropriate social and affordable housing is clearly evidenced in the worrying rise in temporary accommodation.

“Behind these situations are thousands of individuals and families who are living in the most precarious situations, forced to sleep in severely overcrowded dwellings, on a couch at a friend’s house, or even one of the three per cent who are rough sleeping on the street or in a car.”

WANGARATTA residents dominated the Rotary Club of Appin Park Wangaratta community raffle, which was drawn at the Wangaratta Motor Group premises last Friday night.

Locals won the first six prizes, with Sian Browne’s ticket plucked from more than 19,000 entries in the barrel to win the first placed prize of a Toyota Yaris, valued at $28,531, from the Wangaratta Motor Group.

Steve and Penny Macklin won the second place prize of a travel and cruise package from Wanga-

ratta Travel and Cruise valued at $3500.

Julienne Smart won the third place prize of a Trailer Package from Wangaratta Trailer sales valued at $3670.

LOCAL residents can have their say on road users' behaviour as part of a new Victorian parliamentary inquiry.

The Legislative Assembly Economy and Infrastructure Committee is welcoming public submissions for its investigation into the impact of road safety behaviours on vulnerable road users.

The inquiry will specifically look at how road users' behaviour changed during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and how this affected the safety of people most at risk on the road.

“Last year, 241 Victorians lost their lives on the road, and thousands more were injured,” said committee chair Alison Marchant.

“We also know many more pedestrians and motorcyclists died on the road last year compared with the previous year.”

Vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycle riders, are less protected in the event of a road crash.

The inquiry will consider the impact of road users’ behaviour on these groups as well as on the safety of children, older people and people using mobility devices.

“Studies suggest drivers were more distracted during lockdowns and were more likely to take risks on the road such as speeding,” Ms Marchant said.

“We want to hear from road users about their experiences on the road during and after COVID, and their views on how to improve road safety behaviours.

“We’re also keen to hear from road safety experts and peak bodies representing road users on what they think is shaping people's behaviour on the road, and how this information can be used to improve safety.”

Public submissions to the inquiry are open until May 19.

The committee plans to hold public hearings later this year and will report to parliament in March 2024.

THE $160,000 State Government cash injection into veterinary clinic equipment at Wangaratta’s Tone Road GOTAFE campus reflects the success of the government’s free TAFE education policy for certain courses.

Student numbers in the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing have rocketed since the policy came into effect and is expected to continue to grow in the future.

It is helping reduce the shortage of vet nurses and also to meet growing demand in the sector and, hopefully, will lead to similar benefits in other industries.

Our region, like much of the country, still faces a shortage of qualified staff in a range of industries and free or subsidised TAFE courses are arguably one of the best ways to solve the problem.

It’s been highlighted in recent months that Australia needs to improve the productivity of its workforce urgently or there will be severe economic consequences in the future and one of the best ways of doing this is by having a better trained and skilled workforce.

We continuously hear that skilled migration is the answer, and it certainly is crucial particularly in the short term, but with more and more jobs being taken over by technology it‘s imperative more Australians are trained or upskilled to fill those roles.

Proposed solar farm not a perfect answer WE recently attended a meeting at the Milawa Community Centre to discuss the proposed solar farm to be established at Meadow Creek.

This farm will be set up on a 1400 acre site, producing 330M/W of power requiring something like 900,000 solar panels supported by a battery energy storage system with 250M/W capacity lasting two hours.

We are concerned these panels may be made by Uyrguh slave labour and the battery will contain cobalt from the Congo, where it is mined by children as young as 10 and 12 years of age.

Are we as decent Australians so bewitched by the renewable energy ideology we are prepared to completely ignore the hardships inflicted on these poor mistreated people?

There are other technologies available which renewable advocates will claim are more emissions emitting.

This may be true, but the technology is improving all the time, and these alternatives are far more reliable.

We hope this letter will help arouse awareness among the good people of Wangaratta.

If it doesn’t perhaps an appeal to selfinterest might.

The electricity produced by this farm is not intended for Wangaratta, it is meant for Melbourne.

Solar proves more than a money saver I WOULD like to add a few numbers to the wonderful, erudite letter of Jane Baker (Wangaratta Chronicle letters, March 24).

We have a 14kW, 20kWh solar system that came online two years ago.

We chose to stay on the grid both as insurance (which we never had to use) and a little free income, miserable as the feed-in tariff is.

In the last 12 months we generated 12500 kWh and used 5700 kWh, easily supporting another neighbouring household.

Despite the daily charge we not only had free electricity but accumulated a $1000 surplus over the year.

Cyclists praise rural city hospitality FOR the past week a party of 40 Portarlington Pedallers have enjoyed the paths and roads around Wangaratta.

Also noted was the good road manners and patience of your drivers who gave us room to ride and adequate clearance when passing, as well as often a cheery wave.

Helping build confidence with career aspirations

COSMIC CONJUNCTON: Five planets are in alignment with the moon.

A RECENT headspace National Youth and Mental Health Foundation survey found that only half of young people are confident in succeeding in their current or future career aspirations.

Of the 3107 young people surveyed, only 54 per cent felt fairly or very confident in applying for a job and only 52 per cent felt they had the skills required to succeed in their current or future career.

Wangaratta High School careers advisor, Cate West, said this could be because of the pandemic as the students have had their education disrupted.

“It’s just about getting them the confidence that they can do these things because they’re skills they haven’t learnt,” she said.

Most recently, Ms West has been supporting year 10 students in preparing for work experience and said a lot have been struggling with applying for jobs.

“If you look at the students who are in year 10, they were probably in about grade six the last time everything was normal,” she said.

“A lot of them are really apprehensive about it and I’m working hard with them, writing scripts to make phone calls,

Ms West said this isn’t just an issue for year 10s.

“A lot of them are really lost about making choices for their future,” she said.

To combat this at Wangaratta High School, Ms West said they have different programs and activities for all year levels to help them learn the skills and start thinking about careers.

These include the Morrisby career profiling test for year 9s, individual counselling, mock interviews, careers forums and having students fill out career action plans.

Ms West also gives her students suggestions when applying for jobs such as when to approach employers, making sure they’re presentable, writing down the employer’s name, researching the company they’re applying for and knowing what

they want to say when calling employers.

While the school is doing its part in helping students become more confident, Ms West said she believes community support is also needed for them to succeed.

“Some of these students need really good guidance and mentoring and I think that if we can get the community behind supporting the kids it’s going to be a win win for everyone,” she said.

JUPITER, Mercury, Venus, Uranus and Mars have been in alignment with the moon this week and will continue to be visible during the night until March 30.

Venus will be the easiest to spot with the naked eye because it’s the third-brightest object in the sky, after the sun and moon.

While most of the planets should be visible to the naked eye, you’ll probably need binoculars, or even a telescope, to see Uranus and get the full five-planet procession.

Shortly after the sun dips below the horizon, look to the west.

Low in the sky, where the sun just set, Jupiter and Mercury will appear side-byside.

The duo will only be visible for less than an hour after sunset.

After that, they will sink below the horizon and you won’t be able to see them.

Uranus will be above and to the left of Venus, very close by.

You’ll be able to see the fainter planet best after all the sunlight has faded from the sky, taking Jupiter and Mercury with it.

You’ll have an hour or two to search for it before that duo, too, sets below the horizon.

On the other hand, you’ll have plenty of time to check out the red planet, Mars.

It will appear bright red and high up in the southwest sky, below the moon.

celebrate the release of the book, which took a decade to complete.

The biography of CFA brigades in North East Victoria describes the development of cooperative firefighting in the community, the formation of the brigades and the creation of the Wangaratta Fire Brigades Group.

The book includes the story of the infamous Tarrawingee tragedy that resulted in the death of 10 people and ultimately contributed to the formation of CFA. The individual stories of the 16 brigades that form the Wangaratta Group is detailed within the book, and takes the reader back to the 1800’s.

Taxi licencing, accreditation delays are causing pain: MP TAXI licencing and disability accreditation delays are impacting the viability of some taxi services in the Ovens Valley, according to Nationals’ MP Tim McCurdy.

The Wangaratta-based Ovens Valley state MP said he had been approached by a local taxi company which was struggling to fill shifts due to the massive delays and red tape.

Raising the matter in Parliament last week, Mr McCurdy said the government needs to implement measures to expedite the licencing and disability accreditation process.

“When it is taking two to three months to get a licence to drive a taxi, and then another month or more to drive a wheelchair equipped taxi, it makes it difficult for businesses to keep up with demand,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we may be in a position where some services, including wheelchair services, could be cut due to a lack of trained drivers.”

Mr McCurdy also noted that the lack of competition with licenced trainers was not driving down costs or improving the time it takes to become accredited to drive a wheelchair equipped taxi.

“There are only two licenced providers in Victoria,” he said.

“There is no incentive or competition to push each provider to deliver a better and more efficient training process.

“Once again, I urge the minister to give regional Victorians the guarantee they will have access to public transport that works for them.

“The taxi industry is often the only viable form of public transport in the regions, and these delays are causing driver shortages - why isn’t the government acting on this now?”

Book fair Wangaratta Primary School STUDENTS have been fortunate enough to have the Scholastic Book Fair visit.

They have been dragging parents in before and after school in order to visit the fair and persuade them to buy some books.

Middle school activities

OVER the past three weeks, AFL Victoria has been running a training program for the preps and grade ones.

Neve, Mia and Dayne from Miss Murray’s prep class were amongst the students enjoying the program.

AFL Victoria trainer Heidi Parkinson ran through a series of games throughout the three weeks, practicing teamwork, kicking skills, footwork and plenty more.

This opportunity allowed the younger students to learn and enjoy basic football skills as the AFL season commences.

Cathedral College Wangaratta DURING extended homeroom the middle school was abuzz with excitement as they all enjoyed some outdoor activities.

Year six students explored different lawn games, even including a spot of croquet while year seven students got to become competitive with homeroom versus homeroom tug-of-war, refereed by Matt Lane.

PULLING TOGETHER: With their peers cheering them on the seven Ovens boys gave it their all in the tug-of-war.

Million Paws Walk returns THANKS to the generous support of The Wangaratta Kennel and Obedience Dog Club (WK&ODC), the Million Paws Walk will once again take place in Wangaratta this May. Vice president of the WK&ODC, Marion Gray, said the club have supported the event for 12 years and that it‘s not only a great opportunity for fundraising but also for people to get out and exercise with their pets.

“Animals are all about mental health and supporting people and I think it‘s an important thing,” Ms Gray said.

Anyone can join in the walk whether they‘re walking as an individual or as a team and participants can also decide whether they take on the 4.2km walk or the 1.5km walk.

“Everyone walks in a long line and staggers out,” she added “Because some people are faster and some people are slower, some dogs have wheelie prams because they can‘t walk and they need an outing.

“People also have prams and bring their kids and babies along while the dogs trot along at their side,” Di Costello from the WK&ODC said.

Foster care coordinator, and organiser of the Wangaratta event, Nicole Oates, said they are raising money for RSPCA across the board.

“We‘re raising money to support the general care and re–homing of animals that come into our care,” she said.

Through fundraising, walkers can even earn prizes for themselves depending on how much they raise through sponsors.

As well as the walk, Ms Oates said there will also be information marquees and retail stalls at the event, just like last year.

“Marquees will be set up with information about adoption and fostering,” she said.

“Last year it was really successful chatting with the general public about options for fostering and volunteering at the Wangaratta shelter and also talking

about opportunities for adoption and how that works.”

This year’s event will take place on Sunday, May 28 at 9am at the WK&ODC clubhouse at the showgrounds and early bird tickets are available until Tuesday, April 18.

Urgent upgrades needed for Moyhu rec reserve

By CHLOE JAENICKE COMMUNITY fundraising is underway for electrical upgrades for the Moyhu Recreation Reserve.

Haylee Curry, a member of reserve committee, started a GoFundMe page for the electrical upgrades on February 7, aiming to raise $50,000.

Ms Curry said the need for the electrical upgrade was seen at the start of last year’s footy season when they were made aware of a voltage drop in electricity that was unable to support new upgrades made to the female change rooms and sewerage system.

“The rural city council came out and has done their investigations and what has happened over the years with the new buildings and upgrades is none of the electricity was upgraded so with that, we need this electrical upgrade so everything can run,” she said.

While they have had support and grants from places like Garry Nash & Co and the Foundation For Rural & Regional Renewal, Ms Curry said more funding is still needed for the upgrades to take place.

“It’s a huge out of pocket cost for the rec reserve,” she said.

“We’re not able to apply for a lot of grants because we’re not a sporting association, we’re a rec reserve.”

According to Ms Curry, the upgrades would involve as full underground upgrade including WANGARATTA Senior Citizens Club will host a barbecue at Lions Park today from 12 noon.

The club will also host indoor carpet bowls from 12 noon tomorrow (Thursday), cards (euchre) from 1.30pm on Friday, indoor carpet bowls on Monday from 12 noon, and cards (500) and hoy on Tuesday from 1.30pm, all at its clubrooms in Tara Court, off Ford Street, or in St Patrick’s supper room.

Next Wednesday’s social event will be an in-house movie, ‘Andre Rieu in New York’, screening from 1.30pm.

There will be no activities on Good Friday, but indoor carpet bowls will be held on Easter Monday.

MOIRA CWA Group will host a garden party on Saturday, April 1 from 11am to 3pm at Mirrabooka, 1610 Boorhaman Road, Boorhaman.

Entry is $20 adults, $5 children under 12, $40 family, including lunch and afternoon tea.

Cost of afternoon tea only is $10.

RECREATION RESERVE: The Moyhu Recreation Reserve is in desperate need for electrical upgrades. new switch boards and electricals throughout the whole system.

Ms Curry said these upgrades were crucial as the rec reserve is home to many sporting clubs and is often used by the community for many other purposes all year round.

“The rec reserve supports football, netball, cricket, and the CFA uses it once or twice a year...we also have little events that use the rec re-

serve quite frequently,” she said.

The upgrade is also important to support the growing community of Moyhu as a whole, Ms Curry said.

“With the community moving forward and our town population increasing with the new real estate developments, the electricals will have to keep up with the demand should there be any more buildings built in the future,” she said.

So far, Ms Curry said the process

of raising funds for the project has been slow, with only around $400 raised on the GoFundMe page so far.

“It’s been very slow, apart from the larger grants and funding which have been secured, the GoFundMe page hasn’t taken off as we thought it would have,” she said.

Hockey season hits off in style

By KYLIE SAMSON Division 3 Men DEFENSIVE, strong defence, usually phrases associated with our division three men’s team.

Well they were that and then some on Saturday, with some new players on the team and a completely different position line-up.

It took them a while to find their feet and get used to the new positions but when they did, wow what a team.

With many young men stepping up from the under 16 team the game was fast paced and exciting to watch.

With the new line-up every player on the team was out-

standing, I didn’t envy the coach trying to pick best on ground, but it went to Hunter Kerr for his remarkable drive and determination.

Hunter ran those extra steps and took the ball from the opposition more often than they would like to admit, well done young man, well done to the whole men’s team. With an extra 10 minutes on the clock, the 3-2 loss may have looked a lot different.

Division 2 and 3 Women Impressive start to season 2023 by both teams.

The Shamims (Div 3) drew 0-0 which was a great result for us as it’s basically a new team for this season and we need to find our feet.

But we bothered their defence more than they bothered us.

We will remain competitive in the division three once we get some mongrel in the front line.

The Katems (Div 2) had a scare to start our season, due to nerves and playing a bit more structure.

The first quarter was all Falcons, the team defended their little cotton socks off.

We managed to find ourselves in the second quarter but still had to work hard in defence.

Our game play came to us in the second quarter and we were more in the attacking ‘D’.

team and persistence earned us a stroke and a couple of short corners.

Oh and Spinny Katie got a goal.....I should have mentioned we won 1-0 earlier, but I was too chuffed about both teams’ efforts this weekend.

Well done Dragon Chicks, you’re travelling well.

Under 16 girls The under 16 girls started their 2023 season on Friday evening with a late game against a strong team from Corowa.

The girls took to the field just short of a full team, but that didn’t diminish their enthusiasm and excitement.

With amazing efforts from

first time goalkeeper Eva Siperki and newcomers to the game Millie Rivers and Ayla McIntyre, once these girls found their feet they were unstoppable.

Best on ground went to another newcomer to hockey, Charlotte Marshall, playing in defence she showed an amazing ability to read the play, well done Charlotte.

But let’s not overlook the players that have returned to the team, they were instrumental in helping the new players find their feet.

But unfortunately, even with Ada Wheeler’s goal, the young ladies just couldn’t get across the line for a win.

Under 16 boys

The under 16 boys started off their season on Friday night against United.

The established core of the team have been training hard with the seniors during the preseason and showed off some great team play throughout the match.

Newcomers to the team Edward Robertson and Ollie Fox were able to adapt to the speed and the skill of the higher grade quite quickly, and we’re looking more comfortable on the field as the game progressed.

It was a promising start to the season, even though they weren’t able to come away with a win, eventually going down 3 - 0.

Wickets galore in WDCA grand finals THE WDCA season concluded across the rural city this weekend in A reserve, B grade and C grade grand finals in what turned out to be a paradise for bowlers and low scores.

In the A reserves the Wangaratta Magpies made amends for their A grade counterpart’s defeat, proving too good for Ovens Valley United in their eight wicket win at WJ Findlay Park, chasing the Tigers’ total of 85 with ease.

Young Magpies pace bowler Tom Clayton was awarded player of the match honours, taking 4/10 off his 10 overs, while Robert Barry carried his bat to finish 22 not out in the Tigers’ innings.

At the HP Barr Reserve on Saturday it was carnage for Rovers United Bruck B grade in their one day grand final, as they elected to bat first and were bowled out for just 36 against first placed side Yarrawonga Mulwala.

The wickets were shared across the Lakers bowlers with Hunter Frauenfelder chosen as the standout, winning man of the match with figures of 3/10 off 7.5 overs as his team chased the low total with nine wickets to spare.

It was better news for RUB in the C grade grand final as they successfully defended their total of 170 at Wareena Park against Gapsted, bowling them out for 52 to claim the premiership.

Coming through with the performance of the weekend was young bowler Selby Doyle, who finished his eight overs with stunning figures of 7/19 to take home player of the match.

chery to really enjoy themselves.

Spirited Devils come from behind WANGARATTA City put the competition on notice on Sunday afternoon.

The Devils made it a hattrick of wins to start the season when they stunned defending premiers Albury United at South Wangaratta Reserve.

Wangaratta trailed the Greens 1-2 before a Stoycho Ivanov free kick from 30 yards found the top corner which sparked a revival from the home side, running away 4-2 victors.

Ivanov finished the game with two goals, while Oscar O’Keefe and Dan Kelly also managed one each.

Wangaratta coach Raff Molinaro can’t believe the start his team has had.

“Definitely not in my wildest did I think we’d have the start we’ve had,” Molinaro said.

“I can’t explain how we’re doing so well, I think everyone’s just playing for each other and showing

a lot of heart and willingness to work together.

“There’s gradual belief building within the squad with these results which is just a huge boost.”

Molinaro said he was proud of his boys’ efforts to come from behind.

“The most pleasing thing coming from the weekend was the fact that we came from a deficit,” Molinaro said.

“United scored the first goal, we equalised and then they scored the next so we were 2-1 down but we still managed to come back, thanks largely to Stoycho (Ivanov).

“Ethan Whiley pulled out Sunday morning (sore back) and that didn’t unsettle the boys, Adam Greaves an 18-year-old came in and

did his job.

“We had four 18-yearolds starting on Sunday and Luca Campagna came on later so he’s another one.”

Ivanov has been a shining light in the start of the 2023 season with three goals from three games.

“I had a chat to Stoycho before the season began and told him that he’d probably have to be a bit of a leader and step-up with our new young group,” Molinaro said.

“He’s now seen that the younger boys are in and they all want to have a crack so he’s really stood up for us so far.

“He was the turning point against United and his free kick was probably the best I’ve ever seen - it really spurred everyone on and made them believe that we could beat United.”

Wangaratta City face Melrose this Sunday at Melrose Park.

Confidence rising at Lady Devils despite tight loss

THE Wangaratta City women’s division one team is taking plenty of positives from their back and forth thriller with Albury United, going down 4-3 at South Wangaratta last weekend.

The Lady Devils started with a bang behind the boot of Matilda Aggenbach who put her side in the lead within the first 10 minutes of play.

Shortly after a United equaliser, the Devils struck back through Sarah Morris to re-take the lead before another United equaliser just before half-time to leave the teams tied at two at the break.

The second half did not go the Lady Devils way however, as United asserted their dominance to add two goals by the 75th minute to leave Wangaratta in their wake.

A late goal from Hannah Swindley brought back the chance for the Lady Devils to salvage a point, but it was all too little too late.

Coach Dan Kelly said despite not being the result he would’ve wanted, he was proud of his team’s overall performance.

“We were leading twice throughout the game, we dropped by two goals and just the resilience we showed just to not put the heads down and get that goal back and fight to the last whistle was a really good sign,” he said.

“And considering the improvement from last year where they beat us by about nine goals both times we played them, it shows how

far the girls have come.

“We play them three more times this year and I know if we play them again we will get a victory.

“We can take a lot of confidence from the weekend against an experienced side; with more time playing together I think they’ll gain more confidence going into those sorts of games.”

The Lady Devils are coming off three games in eight days after their midweek FA Cup win over the Myrtleford Savoys, where the team were excited to see plenty of young stars rotate through the team and contribute in the 4-0 win.

Blessed with no midweek fixture this week, the Lady Devils are fresh to face another tough task ahead against Melrose, who are currently undefeated through their first three games.

Kelly said he expects a hotly contested game throughout the 90 minutes.

“Melrose are definitely going to be up there this year, they have some good forwards, but this year we have some great young defenders who can step up and counter their chances,” he said.

“Hopefully our forwards and midfield can take their chances at our end and it should be a good game regardless.”

Lawn tennis aggregate season comes to a close

ROUND 22 has come and gone and with this finds the end of the summer season which was 22/23.

Section one started on time and so did the combination of Matt Allen and Mark Brown who skipped out to a 4/0 lead against John Brunner and Phil Peck with neither being able to lift the other.

Come the end of the set they were able to claw back some respectability to lose it 6/4.

John Brunner snuck home with 22 games with Matt Allen finishing on 21 games.

Mark Brown finish in third with 18 games from Matt Curran on 14 games.

Phil Peck trudged off in all sorts of bother and wondered where and what has gone wrong.

Kevin Callahan and Frank Harris were fighting tooth and nail in section two with Kevin (23 games) edging ahead by one game and this game came courtesy of a ripping volley that pierced through the heart (literally) of Frank (22 games).

Dave Postlethwaite was sending his serves down with a lot of power to finish with 20 games from Mario Pane on 16 games.

Coming in fifth position was Minnesota Mike on 15 games.

The last few rounds have seen Colin McKay find some form as he did again yesterday to win section three with 23 games.

The closest anyone had come to returning Col’s left handed swinging serves was Andrew Cope whom finished in second with 21/20 just ahead of Maree Sullivan on 21/21.

Greg Renner was next in line with 20 games from Michelle Flynn who was a bit stiff to finish in fifth spot on 19 games.

Section four was playing out on court 8 with five in the section which by the second set was reduced to four players.

There was a crack like a branch dropping from a red gum tree, but it was that shook the ground like the last earthquake but none other than Russell ‘Troppo’ Canning who went down like he was shot by a sniper.

The last that was seen of poor ‘Troppo’ was the ice being applied to the calf in the clubhouse.

Pat Flynn relished the conditions to end with 23 games from Peter Curran on 18 games, third and fourth was left to Phil Dryden and Russell O’Brien with Phil edging ahead with 17 games.

Alan Busk took home a glass in section five with a clean score of 24 games.

Geoff Allen was next in line as he dissected his volley through the gaps to end with 20 games from Beth Cope on 17 games.

Geoff Davidson (16 games) and Max McAulliffe (15 games) had their own antics as at one stage they both went for the same ball and appeared to be in a three legged race they were that close.

Amy Lairson also went home with a glass as she won section six in a canter with her 24 games.

The best of the rest was Peter Ablazej who was looking more like a traffic light with the red hat, amber shirt and green shorts.

Plenty of stop pause, go in Pete these days as he finished with 19 games.

Mick Keogh continues to shine as he was third with 17 games from Tim Dickinson and Cate Geard rounding out the section.

There is no rest for the wicked tennis player as the autumn/winter season of aggregate gets underway this Saturday, with play starting at 1pm and entries required either by phoning (03) 5721 2438 at the clubhouse by 12:30pm or just rocking up at the club by this time.

Thursday veterans has also changed starting time and is now 1pm.

Representative netballers kick season off WANGARATTA Netball Association representative teams kicked off the 2023 season with some great wins and two teams making the semi-finals in the first tournament of the year at Diamond Creek on Sunday.

The under 17’s team displayed spark in the early games remaining undefeated until the final two rounds.

They finished the day with a tough semi-final falling three goals short of making the grand final.

Under 15 Aqua finished sixth overall in the championship division.

Under 15 White finished fourth in the reserve division and was rewarded with a semi-final berth.

Playing the top side they were drawn at half-time only to be defeated by three goals.

Under 13 Aqua and under

13 White both finished the round games in fifth position on the ladder, narrowly missing the finals.

Our youngest and most energetic team, the under 11 Aqua team finished sixth in their division but were competitive in many of their games proving that the future of Wangaratta netball is alive and well.

Wangaratta Representative Netball operations manager Cam Miller said it was a great effort for all involved.

“It was a great day for the association with all the players, coaches and supporters representing Wangaratta Netball Association very well against some very strong Metropolitan teams,” Miller said.

The teams now prepare for the Albury Netball Association tournament on Sunday.
