North East deputy fire chief awarded Australia Day honour

MAJOR HONOUR: CFA deputy chief officer for the North East region, Ross Sullivan, was honoured with an Australian Fire Service medal on Friday as part of the Australia Day honours.

CFA’S deputy chief officer (DCO) for the North East region, Ross Sullivan, has been recognised for his more than 45 years of service to the CFA, receiving an Australian Fire Service Medal as part of Friday’s Australia Day Honours.

As the North East’s DCO since 2018, Mr Sullivan oversees some 271 brigades and more than 14,000 volunteers in CFA’s North East region, which stretches from suburban Melbourne up to the regional North East, and as far east as Mallacoota.

He spent time on the frontlines or leading through large scale fires and floods, such as the 2009 fires, the 2014 Hazelwood Mine fire, the 2019/20 fires and the October 2022 floods.

Mr Sullivan is also credited for establishing a process for the rehabilitation and repair of areas damaged by firefighting activity which is now the CFA standard, as well as the development of the CFA Alpine Strategy.

time at CFA, including when I was on station, and I felt I had something to contribute as a leader,” he said.

“To be in a position to support, provide assuredness and opportunities to people on the ground – whether volunteers or staff – and help them to be successful in their own right is a great privilege.

“You don’t come into these roles to be recognised – I feel very fortunate to have been at CFA for so long, to have had the career I’ve had and to have done what I’ve been able to do.”

VERY few can say they’ve left a lasting impact in a wider field of interests than former Wangaratta resident and newly minted Order of Australia Medal recipient David McCabe.

Having moved to the rural city in 1978 with wife Barbara in order to take on the role of principal at the former Wangaratta Technical School, Mr McCabe quickly became part of the furniture within the community, actively serving with the Killawarra Fire Brigade and joining the Wangaratta Ski Club.

In 1981, Mr McCabe became the director of the Wangaratta College of Technical and Further Education (TAFE) at Docker Street, after the technical school’s move to Greta Road, and oversaw the program before commencing a “very, very nice retirement” in 1988.

The end of his working life freed up plenty of spare time for Mr McCabe, who put it to use serving terms on the committees of the Wangaratta Ski Club, the Friends of the Wangaratta Gallery, the Wangaratta Historical Saociety, the Wangaratta Sports Club and the Killawarra Fire Brigade.

He served terms as president in each of his volunteering outlets except the fire brigade, and has been named as a life member for each organisation he did so.

Some 34 years after moving into a new home in Killawarra, Mr and Ms McCabe moved into Wangaratta, spending eight years in town before recently uprooting to be closer to family in Melbourne’s northeast.

Mr McCabe said volunteering had always appealed to him.

PHOTO: Anita McPherson there was a junior Olympics event that went on there which we were heavily involved in – I’ve just always been interested,” he said. “(In 1980) I was living out of

town and I thought that’s what you do – your responsibility is to join the fire brigade – and I knew about the Wangaratta Sports Carnival and I was keen to join that.

“When they started the art gallery, my wife was heavily involved in that and then I came in – you just use the skills that you have that perhaps some other people don’t in terms of writing up minutes and that sort of stuff.

“I joined the Wangaratta Ski Club in 1980, and of course that was a driving influence in me trying to get to Wangaratta because of the mountains and the snow and the fishing and so on, so I found joy and still do in working with the committee of the Wangaratta Ski Club for the benefit of the skiing and for the members.

“I’m still involved, but not physically now – I’ve reached an age where my physical capabilities are a bit less than they used to be.”

Nominated for the Australia Day honour for his service to the community of Wangaratta, Mr McCabe said the award had come as a shock.

“When the email from the Governor General’s office appeared on my phone, my wife and I were just stunned, and then we just though ‘how wonderful’,” he reflected.

“We were just stunned and very thankful to the people in Wangaratta that put my name forward.”

Now residing in Ivanhoe, Mr McCabe is still a familiar face in Wangaratta, attending Saturday’s Wangaratta Sports Carnival at the showgrounds, which he and Barbara both still sponsor.

“We decided at some stage we’d have to come to Melbourne where both our families are – it was just by chance that I came upon an ad for the place we’re in now, and it seemed to suit our requirements,” he said.

“That was confirmed when we found out our son and his architectural firm were responsible for the development,” he laughed.

“We knew it was going to be good and we got very good references for the place.”

Community fights back on dredge restrictions

rmalcolm@ nemedia.com.au A GROUP of Eldorado locals are fighting back against a Parks Victoria directive restricting vehicular access for locals to the northern side of the Eldorado Dredge and historic reserve.

A Parks Victoria letter to Eldorado community member Roxanne Bodsworth in December outlined the popular track, which is used regularly by community members for recreational purposes, would be restricted for the use of walkers, management vehicles and to access adjoining private land only.

The letter also discouraged swimming at the dredge site and the nearby top cut swimming holes, due to the risks of blue green algae.

In the letter, which was issued

by Parks’ Beechworth office, a local ranger noted the track was intended for the primary use of walkers, and had deteriorated significantly through continued vehicular use during recent wet seasons.

The letter also outlined concerns around damage to the surrounding environment and an increased risk to people.

A petition developed by Ms Bodsworth in late-December garnered 524 signatures from surrounding communities and wider Australia, urging Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos to continue to allow easy access to the dredge site for people of all ages and abilities.

The petition was subsequently passed along to the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, which reiterated the site’s links to “nature tourism” and further discouraged swimming at the site due to a risk of “submerged objects”.

A group of community delegates including Ms Bodsworth met with Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy at the dredge site last Wednesday, where locals detailed their need to retain vehicular access due to their existing water rights at the dredge, ease of access to transport recreational swimming and fishing equipment, and argued the existing walking track was inaccessible for anyone aged or living with a disability.

Ms Bodsworth said a similar community effort in the early 2000s had seen the establishment of the Eldorado Historic Park under the National Parks Act 2002, which allowed recreational use of the land after it was deemed to be “of low value conservation”.

“We fought so hard in 2001/02 to have these rights to access recog-

nised, and somebody new moves in and we’ve got to go through it again,” she said.

“It should be set down that locals get to use these areas for recreational purposes.

“They’ve ignored the petition that was signed by over 500 people – they’ve totally ignored that and said it’s about nature tourism and as a walking track.

“It’s a walking track that can’t be used by anybody who’s disabled or anyone who is aged in any way, and certainly not if you want to carry any equipment around there.

“The local usage is more important than their nature tourism, which is very limited anyway.”

Mr McCurdy said he planned to raise the issue with Minister Dimopoulos in the near future.

“This issue has gathered broad community support, and I will continue working with the community to ensure that the government listens to locals,” he said following Wednesday’s meeting.

“Locals know their area best, and they know when the government is trying to lock up popular national park destinations and throw away the key.

“The dredge site has always formed a popular swimming area, which is why I will take this to the minister and encourage him to reconsider the decision of Parks to stop locals from enjoying our natural beauty.”

A WANGARATTA driver was among several motorists caught for drink driving in the local area over the Australia Day long weekend.

Sergeant Jeffrey Kyne of Wangaratta police said the 50 year old male driver was detected during a PBT operation on Parfitt Road in Wangaratta around 8am Saturday morning.

“The driver registered a reading of around 0.06 per cent....just above the legal limit,” he said.

“He was issued an infringement notice and will be off the road for three months, commencing in 28 days.”

Sgt Kyne said PBT operations throughout the Rural City of Wangaratta over the long weekend had seen several driver’s return positive readings.

“We’ve been out on the roads running operations since midnight Thursday as part of the statewide Operation Amity,” he said.

The operation, running through until around midnight Sunday, was targeting speed and other bad behaviour that potentially puts lives as risk on the roads Sgt Kyne said the North East region had again seen large volumes of traffic, particularly from visitors seeking to make the most of the Australia Day weekend.

“It’s been busy, but public behaviour at major events has been very good,” he said.

“We’ve had the rodeos on at Bright and Bundalong and also the Wangaratta Sports Carnival and Australia Day tennis tournament at Wangaratta.”

They’re so grateful to now be Aussie citizens PERHAPS the biggest excitement of the Rural City of Wangaratt’s Australia Day Awards ceremony on Friday morning was kept until last, with seven locals officially inducted as Australian citizens.

In front of a joyous crowd at the King George V Gardens, our newest Australians received their valued certificates of Australian citizenships and pledged their oath to the country on the commemorative occasion.

Among our newest Aussies were the family of Anitha Radhakrishna, Prejith Prasad and daughter Dashka Prejith Nair who couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces as they received their citizenships on stage.

Originally residing from India, Anitha moved to Australia wanting to continue her work as a nurse.

She completed her bridging courses in Perth and her placement work in Brisbane, before moving back to India with Prejith to start applying for jobs in Australia.

After receiving her application, Northeast Health Wangaratta then reached out to sponsor Anitha and helped find her and her family a home in Wangaratta.

The family moved to the community in 2017 with Dashka just over one-yearold and they haven’t looked back since, with the official citizenship ceremony filling the family with pride.

“It’s exciting, we’re truly honoured, happy and grateful to be Australian citizens,” Anitha said.

“We were a little bit nervous when we moved here, we didn’t know anything about Wangaratta, the only reason we moved was the sponsorship from the hospital; but we’re glad that we made this choice, it’s a beautiful town.”

Prejith works at an abbatoir in Corowa and played cricket for City Colts last season in their A grade squad.

While he has taken a step back from his cricketing commitments taking care of newborn son Daven while Anitha works weekends, Prejith said he has thoroughly enjoyed being part of the community.

“It’s a really welcoming community, they support people and have supported me really well,” he said.

Others who received their citizenship on Friday morning were Mary Ann Collins, Morgan Courtney, Jerico Paulino and Mayurachat Saengsai.

OVERNIGHT rain and early morning chills couldn’t dampen an “overwhelming” community response at Wangaratta’s inaugural “Wonga dang-a-latj” Australia Day reflective ceremony last Friday.

An estimated 300 people made the early morning gathering at Merriwa Park which brought together the community to see a different perspective of Australia Day commemoration.

Traditional Owners, in partnership with the Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation (MAC) and Rural City of Wangaratta Council, shared with the community a chance to reflect on our nation’s history, culture and stories.

Led by local Bpangerang Elder Darren ‘Uncle Dozer’ Atkinson, the ceremony was presented through traditional dance, music and storytelling in an inclusive, respectful environment which encouraged the crowd “to have a yarn” with Traditional Owners and ask questions in a safe space.

MAC Ovens Valley chief executive officer, John Martin, said he was overwhelmed by the attendance and community support for the event.

“It’s really encouraging being the first one here and it’ll grow from here,” he said.

“What was really promising was seeing our non-Aboriginal allies come together and the feel they provided and the encouragement around what they want to improve as well, that’s the big part of it.

“This is exceptional and we’re really proud of the coming togeth-

Mr Martin said he hoped the crowd gained and educational experience they can take back to their homes and share among their places of work, in an event he hoped would continue on Australia Day in the years to come.

“It’s ok to speak the truth, it’s ok to listen to each other and understand it’s not a competition between different communities or different races, it’s about coming together and understanding,” he said.

“If it happens that we change the date, that’ll be great, but in the meantime we continue that respectful journey, we walk together, we advocate together and improve the lives of our communities as one.

“Under the banner of reconciliation, it’s important we walk together and do it together and change only comes from that.”

Mayor Dean Rees said he was honoured to have attended and supported the first of its kind ceremony.

Most of the crowd later made their way to the Australia Day ceremony at King George V Gardens.

Project 365 awarded for starting many mental health conversations PROJECT 365’s contributions to the conversation surrounding mental health was celebrated is style on Friday, when the local group was awarded the Event/Project of the Year at the Rural City of Wangaratta’s Australia Day event in the King George Gardens.

The honour specifically lauded The Ripple Effect show performed on November 25 at the Wangaratta Rodeo Grounds by the band U Can Cry. Wangaratta’s Project 365 not only raises awareness for mental health but also is a not-for-profit organisation that raises funds that are put back into are community via the Into Our Hands Community Foundation.

Project 365 and U Can Cry band member, Peter Rourke, said he is proud of what the band has achieved through their performances.

“It’s all about promoting positive mental health and not ignoring it because you can’t,” he said.

“Mental health is real; it’s real for me and thousands of others, some who stand here united under out project 365 name.”

Mr Rourke said he has had many people express to him how the Project 365 shows have helped them start conversations surrounding mental health.

“I came across one of the people who attended the show at work and I asked her how she enjoyed it,” he said.

“She said, ‘we loved it, me and my four friends went home and had a drink after the show and one of my friends said to us that it’s about time they opened up’...that’s one conversation that has started.”

Mr Rourke said he believes the music has brought everyone together and he is grateful for everyone who has been a part of and supported the shows in any way possible.

“We will celebrate this award because this crew deserves to, we don’t do this for accolades, we do this for awareness, but it’s nice to recognised,” he said.

“I’ve come to realise volunteering is a highly underrated experience; everyone has something to give and there will be a time in your life when an opportunity arises for you to give it,” she said.

“Know what you’ve got, it could be a skill, an experience or spare resources of some kind… and recognise the times you can make the contribution.

“I know the people of Wangaratta and surrounds are very generous, but it’s not for all of us all the time, that’s when we might be on the receiving end of someone else’s generousity.”

Committed to learning and growing her knowledge in many areas since her retirement from council as director of corporate services, Ruth has shown her commitment to volunteering in her roles with Into Our Hands Community Foundation, Northeast Health Wangaratta, Give Wangaratta, Everton Tennis Club and the Everton Hall and Sports Complex,.

Ruth said she found a passion for volunteering through the examples set by her parents, Val and Rex, and enjoys the rewarding feeling of supporting her local community.

The Everton-local praised the importance of family and thanked husband Noel and children Stacy and Ben among others for assisting her in her volunteer journey and reminding her of what’s important in life.

“I think Into Our Hands is in good hands, it has become a sustainable organisation and it felt like the time for me to move into Give Wangaratta, which is a meaningful contribution to me,” she said.

Preceding the awards, rural city Australia Day ambassador John Brown said he was honoured to be standing in front of his proud community as its representative of the commemorative day.

Louis was nominated by Senator Bridget McKenzie, COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION: for whom he has Young Citizen of the Year been working on a Louis Pye with fellow weekly basis at her nominee Gracie York.

He said receiving an award on the stage where he once was handing out the award to someone else was a “huge milestone” and he couldn’t have done it without the backing of the local organisations who guided him.

“This recognition of my efforts motivates me and inspires me to continue to serve.”

Louis said not only would he like to thank Senator McKenzie for nominating him for the award, but also the youth team at council for the platform they provide through the Youth Council.

“To Mayor Rees and the councillors, thank you so much for the platform you provide young people in the community through great initiatives, like the Youth Council, which I had the pleasure of serving on for two years and caring for the long-term future of this great rural city that we call home,” he said.

Louis said he’s always respected the Australia Day Citizen of the Year awards and hopes to contribute more to the community in the future.

“I hope to build on my achievements and in the future contribute to a better Australia for us all,” he said.

Louis also acknowledged fellow candidate, Gracie York, for her contributions to the community.

Respectful events build on the pride of all Australians AT a time when division and a lack of respect appear to be an unsettling focus for some in Australian society, Friday’s events in the Rural City of Wangaratta were refreshing and inspiring.

The inaugural reflective ceremony “Wonga dang-a-latj” held in Merriwa Park early Friday morning was a wonderful addition to other events focused on marking a celebration of Australia Day. The partnership between the Rural City of Wangaratta, Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation and Traditional Owners delivered on its aim to allow the community to walk side by side to reconciliation.

The sharing of local Indigenous culture and stories from the likes of Bangerang Elder Uncle Dozer Atkinson were well received by the 150 strong crowd, and provided a valuable opportunity to get a greater understanding and appreciation of the area’s history.

The morning championed unity, tolerance and empathy, and was a positive moment of reflection.

So too, the Australia Day events held in Wangaratta and across 15 other smaller communities in the rural city were important celebrations.

The events bring us together and help recognise the achievements of those who have done so much to make their communities great.

When you look at the state of world affairs, you can’t help but wonder why we seem so intent on accentuating differences rather than common ground.

Our democracy in Australia gives us choice - let us use it wisely.

More clarity needed on prime agricultural land THERE is concern in regional Australia that ‘prime agricultural land’ is being lost to large-scale solar arrays.

The Meadow Creek proposal is one such project (‘Not on our land’, Wangaratta Chronicle front page, Friday, January26).

But prime agricultural land is not well defined.

As the National Farmers Federation reports, each state has differing classifications and “there is not yet an agreed national policy to manage prime agricultural land”.

The Australian Land Use and Management (ALUM) classification does not use the term prime agricultural land.

And while the NFF report expresses concern about the loss of agricultural land, in particular to urban expansion, it fails to mention salinity and erosion.

Interestingly, the NFF report also recognises “the right of an individual farmer to determine his/her own priority land use within existing planning requirements”.

While the Australian National University’s solar and wind map suggests that much of the land around Wangaratta is suitable for largescale solar, it is less clear about Meadow Creek.

The Australian government must give greater priority to the importance of social licence and regulate nationally.

Let’s hope the findings from the forthcoming report from the federal government’s recent Community Engagement Review meet the expectations of the Meadow Creek opponents.

Statistics’ population clock, the milestone was passed at 3.45pm on Wednesday, January 24.

It was helped along by a record 624,100 population increase in the past year.

That annual national growth was even more than the current population of Tasmania (572,800).

Imagine having to add the infrastructure of Tasmania – housing, roads, hospitals, schools, energy supplies, farms – to the country every year.

It all costs: economically, socially and environmentally.

Australia does not need a big population to be successful economically.

Indeed, many Western European countries including Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Iceland, Austria and Sweden all have smaller populations than Australia but higher GDP per capita, or wealth per person.

The critical issue, however, is not wealth but the health of the environment.

The latest State of the Environment – Australia report in 2021 was quite specific about population growth being damaging to biodiversity, largely because of loss of habitat.

When the human population grows, other species lose habitat to urban development or farms to feed the evergrowing number of people.

So long as we continue to grow our population, our environment will remain in

a permanent state of decline.

But many people lose out as well.

Housing supply has not kept up with demand, resulting in record housing unaffordability.

Homelessness is on the rise with many reduced to sleeping in tents or their cars.

Recent projections for immigration will ensure these challenges become more intractable, whatever effort is made to mitigate them.

Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) believes Australia’s population must stop growing before it reaches 30 million.

Junior doctors join class action against hospitals JUNIOR doctors who have worked at Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) could be part of class actions against Victorian public hospitals in seeking payment for unrostered overtime and penalties led by a case involving Peninsula Health.

The lead case is currently before the courts under appeal after the Federal Court found that Peninsula Health had breached the Fair Work Act by failing to properly recognise the overtime performed by lead plaintiff, Dr Gaby Bolton.

The Australian Salaried Medical Officers’ Federation (ASMOF) Victoria and the Australian Medical Association (AMA) Victoria are now calling on the Victorian Government to stop stealing wages from Victoria’s junior doctors.

President of AMA Victoria Dr Jill Tomlinson said Victorian patients are depending

on a hospital system that is built on shaky foundations that are already showing signs of crumbling.

“Victoria’s junior doctors have been battling a brutal culture and terrible conditions for decades and it’s time to put that era to an end,” she said.

“Our health system relies on burnt out doctors working unpaid overtime to keep it running - that’s simply no longer sustainable.

“When 60 per cent of junior doctors have admitted to making a clinical error due to extreme fatigue, it’s little wonder that so many are

considering leaving the profession.”

President of ASMOF Victoria Dr Roderick McRae noted that the current Victorian Government, including leader Jacinta Allan and her predecessor Daniel Andrews, has been quick to call out wage theft and underpayment, yet has not intervened to fix this longstanding and corrosive problem.

NHW is one of 15 Victorian health services currently engaged in the class actions.

Gordon Legal was engaged by the Victorian division of the ASMOF and individual junior doctors

to pursue the claims in the Federal Court.

The firm could not provide specific details to the Wangaratta Chronicle regarding the number of doctors that could be affected by unpaid overtime as part of the class action.

However, they expect that over a six-year period hundreds of junior doctors have worked at Northeast Health Wangaratta and the other health services that may be affected by the result of the Peninsula Health test case.

NHW was approached for comment, however, it declined.

Life membership award for much-loved Killawarra firefighter’s significant roles THE finest in Killawarra firefighting have been celebrated for their longstanding commitment to the local brigade, as part of a recent awards evening.

Some 36 members and their families gathered at the Wangaratta Club on Sunday, January 21 as 15 volunteers were awarded milestone service medals for their ongoing support of the local firefighting effort, and former captain Clayton Henderson was honoured with life membership of the brigade.

The Ireland native joined the brigade in 1999, and has since spent four years as captain, more than 12 years as a lieutenant, four years as a group delegate, four years as a VFBV delegate and two years as a health and safety representative while turning out more than 330 times for the brigade.

He also spent six years with CFA District 23 with roles in administration, support and training and as a brigade administration support officer.

Killawarra captain Tim Loffler said Mr Henderson had left a lasting legacy within the brigade.

“Clayton’s generosity in sharing his experience, developing and delivering training and mentoring others has been a significant factor in the way Killawarra has operated over many years,” he said.

“Of course, there is a much bigger story behind the numbers – during his captaincy between 2012 and 2016, Clayton was instrumental in the replacement of our tanker,

Goorambat crash leaves five injured, four airlifted from scene

By RYAN MALCOLM HIGHWAY Patrol officers are investigating a collision in Goorambat which saw four people, including two children, airlifted to Melbourne hospitals on Thursday night.

Emergency crews were called to Benalla-Yarrawonga Road just before 7pm, after a truck allegedly collided with a blue Ford Ranger utility which was towing a caravan.

A police spokesperson said the vehicles had subsequently crashed into trees, where a branch then fell onto the roof of the utility.

A 10-year-old girl and a nine-year-old boy were both airlifted to the Royal Childrens Hospital with upper and lower body injuries in a stable condition, while a 30-year-old man and a 72-year-old man were airlifted to the Royal Melbourne and Alfred hospitals respectively, having suffered serious injuries.

Both were said to be in a stable condition on Friday morning.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed a fifth passenger, a woman in her 50s was had been taken to Northeast Health Wangaratta with upper body injuries, was in a stable condition.

Police interviewed the driver of the truck, a 22-year-old Bundalong man, at the scene, and released him pending further enquiries.

The man was not injured, and stopped at the scene following the crash.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam or CCTV footage or information about the collision to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Slow down as children return to school

AS Victorian students prepare to return to school after the summer holidays, road users are being urged to take extra care in a bid to reduce the number of transport-related deaths and serious injuries.

The call, which has been issued by KidSafe Victoria and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) in recent days, comes after Victoria experienced its highest number of road deaths in 15 years in 2023.

Transport-related incidents – which include child pedestrians and passengers – continue to be

a leading cause of injury-related deaths and hospitalisations for children.

Already this year, three school-aged children have been killed in Victorian road crashes.

Kidsafe Victoria general manager Jason Chambers emphasised the importance of road safety during the busy back-toschool period.

“Roads are designed with adults in mind, but it’s important to remember that children aren’t ‘little adults,’” he said.

“They lack traffic experience, cognitive development, and are

smaller in stature, which makes them more vulnerable to injury.”

Historically, speed contributes to more than 30 per cent of crashes, and while it is not always the crash, the speed of the vehicle at impact always determines how badly people are hurt as a result, according to TAC chief executive officer Tracey Slatter.

“Tragically there’s three children that won’t be returning to school because of road trauma,” she said.

“This is a devastating reminder that our choices on the roads

can change lives forever.

“School hours see an influx of excited and exhausted children around roads, car parks, and driveways, especially during pick-up and drop-off times.

“Children are naturally inquisitive and remarkably quick and mobile.

“When combined with the substantial blind spots that exist behind all vehicles, it can be difficult for a driver to spot a child behind a reversing vehicle.”

Wangaratta’s warm, wet summer continues WANGARATTA’S rather mild and wet summer is continuing.

We’ve so far avoided extreme heat, with our highest temperatures to date this summer being 36.8 degrees on December 13 and 36.1 degrees on January 12.

Wangaratta’s summer rainfall to date has already edged past 200mm, and is our highest 1974.

Throughout Victoria, summer has seen the absence of high maximum temperatures of 38 degrees and higher, except Mildura which recorded 40.3 degrees on December 12.

There was also a high reading of 40.7 degrees on November 10 which turned out to be the highest November temperature at Mildura since 1897.

The summer of 1897-98 was one of the hottest on record in Victoria and NSW and very dry .

Many places this summer has seen record daily rainfalls around Christmas and again on January 8.

Maximum temperatures in December were half a degree above normal in North East Victoria and half a degree below normal elsewhere in Victoria whilst minimum temperatures were mostly two degrees above and the warmest since 2019.

Maximum temperatures across most of Victoria and the southern half of NSW in January to date have slipped to one degree below normal whilst mean minimum temperatures

have remained two degrees above normal in our region as well as across much of Queensland.

The highest temperature in Melbourne so far this summer was only 34 degrees and this is the first time going right back to 1856 that 35 degrees was not reached at all during the first part of summer up to January 24.

There were three summers in Melbourne in which the highest temperature did not reach 36 degrees - 1863-64, 1903-04 and 1910-11.

Most of eastern Australia was saturated during these summers and also the early part of the following autumn (the big floods of March and April 1864).

Ceduna recorded a near record high temperature for January on January 23 of 46.6 degrees.

Very often these high tem-

peratures transport quickly into Victoria the next day and sometimes lead to heatwave conditions within the next week or so.

Widespread rain has fallen in the central part of the Northern Territory.

Daly Waters has recorded 382mms this month - its third wettest behind 612mms in January 2009 and 393mms in January 1940.

There was severe heatwave conditions in Victoria late January-early February 2009 after a cool and wet December of 2008.

There was a remarkable heatwave in Victoria during the second week of March 1940 after tropical cyclone activity near the end of February 1940 in Queensland.

The hottest days this summer look certain to arrive by early February.

Erin sets the standard for local youth Friday, Janu January nuar ary 27 27, 2014 SHE was wearing a green dress yesterday but it was Erin Ritchie’s work on the Little Black Dress project that showed why she is the rural city’s Young Citizen of the Year for 2014.

Erin, 18, developed the Little Black Dress fashion parade and exhibition back in 2012 as a way to show the talents of Wangaratta’s youth in the field of textiles.

The exhibition was a success, running for two months at the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre.

The project was just one of the many reasons why Erin was given the award.

Since year seven she has been involved in leadership programs, including a stint as youth mayor on the Rural City of Wangaratta youth council, and as band captain at Wangaratta High School.

Archer Nathan Maurice Jeffress Archer Nathan Maurice Jeffress was born on Monday, January 22 at 4:36pm and weighed 4.21kg (9lb 5oz). He is the son of Shannon Broughton and Tyler Jeffress of Finley.

Council’s chair of administrators, Alisa Fox, said Erin has given outstanding service to the community.

“She is a positive role model to Wangaratta’s young people and especially to young women and girls,” she said.

Erin said her experience on youth council helped expose

her to more options for volunteering and making a difference in the community.

“Youth council really opened things up for me,” she said.

“I was able to volunteer for all these community events.”

As for what’s next, Erin is off to Melbourne to study Arts/Law at Deakin University.

Rangeview wants more community volunteers

By CHLOE JAENICKE RANGEVIEW Nursing Home is currently on the look-out for more volunteers.

Sue Wheeler has been volunteering at the nursing home for around four years and said the number of volunteers has dropped, especially since COVID. “When I first came here, there were quite a number of volunteers but over the years and during COVID there’s not as many as there were,” she said.

“There’s a need for people as volunteers I think because staff in aged care facilities are run off their feet.

“I know Rangeview runs better when there are volunteers around.”

Ms Wheeler originally started volunteering at Rangeview because her mum is a resident and because she enjoys hearing the stories of the other residents.

“The catalyst for me to come is that Mum is a resident here and for me I enjoy interacting with the older folk,” she said.

From Ms Wheeler’s experience, she’s found many of the residents enjoy interacting with the volunteers as it gives them a chance to see someone from outside the home.

“I think it’s rewarding to come in and talk to older folk that need interaction with people because a lot of them don’t have that interaction,” she said.

The main roles of the volunteers are to run group activities, including crafts and bingo, and to interact with the residents one-on-one.

Ms Wheeler encourages people to consider volunteering even if it’s for only an hour a week.

“If there’s anyone out there that has a spare hour a week or

even a fortnight to come and help out with activities that would be very helpful for the staff and the residents,” she said.

“There have been times when we’ve had volunteers come in to sit one-on-one with a resident.

“You might sit and watch TV together or watch the tennis or take them for a walk or if they’re in wheelchair you can take them outside for a walk if the weather permits.”

AUSTRALIA DAY COMMUNITIES throughout the Rural City of Wangaratta celebrated Australia Day with morning breakfasts, mid–morning gatherings and evening meal events.

There were 15 Australia Day congregations around the municipality, in addition to the main Wangaratta event in the King George Gardens.

All events featured the presentation of Australia Day awards to deserving local residents Events were held in Boorhaman, Carboor, Cheshunt, Eldorado, Everton, Glenrowan, Hamilton Park, Milawa/ Oxley, Moyhu, Murmungee, North Wangaratta, Peechelba, Springhurst, Tarrawingee and Whorouly.

Glenrowan couple achieve much, together

AT 9am on Friday, January 26, the rain had thankfully eased as locals and visitors were welcomed by the Glenrowan Our Town committee to celebrate Australia Day in Glenrowan.

The event was held in the Lions Park underneath the Australian flag and alongside the new Ned Kelly Hub. After the national anthem, our ward Councillor Irene Grant announced and presented Glenrowan’s Australia Day Local Achievers Award to Gordon and Heather LePoidevin for their extensive voluntary work in the community through both the

CFA and their work weeding, planting native flora and mowing around the Siege Precinct public spaces and gardens.

The couple carry out such voluntary work never seeking acknowledgement or recognition.

They are truly Local Achievers.

The official event finished at 10am, but people stayed to enjoy our town, the Ned Kelly Hub and the Lions Australia Day Markets at the Old Police Station.

The Lions club provided a free barbecue brunch and drinks.

Thanks to the Glenrowan and Warby Lions Club, the Glenrowan CFA and the Rural City of Wangaratta for their support.

AROUND 60 people gathered at the Tarrawingee Hall from 8am last Friday to enjoy the free community breakfast hosted by Tarrawingee Community Group as part of the official Australia Day festivities.

The breakfast is always an opportunity for residents to get together as a community and enjoy tasty barbecue delights, a cuppa and a catch-up.

Allan Hooper was the local MC and Rural City of Wangaratta Councillor Dave Fuller attended to announce the Australia Day Local Achiever Award recipient, which this year was presented to Cate and Phil Lithgow of The Plough Inn. The Lithgows were acknowledged for their passionate contribution to the community since purchasing the town’s only pub in 2020.

Wetlands inspires music video ahead of Chi festival

T

he majesty of the Winton Wetlands landscape is the backdrop for a new music video released by DJ and producer Uone and Beat & Path Records, in the lead up to the CHI WOW WAH TOWN festival.

The seventh instalment of the “DEPTH. PERCEPTION” series, Uone takes audiences on a journey through his signature sound of western influenced deep house, with the wetlands setting the scene.

Uone, who is performing at the CHI WOW WAH TOWN music, arts and wellness festival opening on February 23 at the wetlands, says the soundtrack features Indigenous instruments, grungy guitar riffs and thick rolling basslines.

Festival director Ewan Scott (aka Uone) says he discovered Winton Wetlands in 2020 while visiting family in

the border region, at the same time contemplating whether to hold another festival.

“I drove out there in the middle of a storm and the ranger at the Mokoan hub told me if I was going out there, to beware of turtles that come out in the stormy weather,” he said.

“As soon as I arrived at Green’s Hill, I got out of my ute, and there was a long neck turtle staring right at me.

“I realised at this point, Green’s Hill was ideal for hosting an event like ours - it had the infrastructure we needed, and the topography of the landscape was ideal.

“When we held our first event (in March 2022) people were blown away by the beauty, and a lot of them

had no idea it existed.

“Through our community, I think we’ve helped to put it on the map and bring a little bit of excitement to the wetlands.”

Ewan says he is also well aware it is a sensitive site, and honouring the land is paramount to the design of the event, the team working closely with the wetlands management committee and Koorie cultural officer Nikki James, to ensure it’s protected.

The festival is limited to 2500 people in order to minimise its impact on the site, and the way it was left following the 2022 event, received the tick of approval from wetlands management.

“It’s one of our paramount ethos - educating our community about nature, that their coming to a pristine nature reserve and to treat it with the respect the land deserves,” Ewan said.

he festival actually began as a way to raise awareness about Multiple Sclerosis, a condition Ewan has been living with for the last 13 years.

He said CHI WOW WAH TOWN is now celebrating its 10th anniversary, and giving back to the community through positive initiatives including over $30,000 to MS Australia in the last decade - is an important component of it.

“At the time when I was young and very active in the music scene there was no real awareness around MS for someone of my age,” he said.

“We started very small with 350 people and raised some money for MS, then the next year, did it again, and we continue to donate a portion of the ticket sales to MS Australia.

“The last event also generated more than $4000 for the

Winton Wetlands revegetation and Growling Grass Frog Project, and $5 from each car pass will go towards it again this year.”

Ewan and a small team will begin setting up on site two weeks before the festival begins, followed by a core building crew which moves in to erect infrastructure including stages, seating and tents.

There will be 14 international acts and 35 domestic artists spanning live performances and DJ sets across two live music stages during the three-day camping event, where punters can physically and spiritually immerse themselves in the pristine, natural environment.

There will also be multicultural food vendors on site, sound healing, yoga, and mind, body and spirit workshops, along with hot air balloon rides.

Ewan said returning festival goers will be blown away when they see the water in the wetlands, as it was dry during the 2022 event, and they will have the opportunity to witness a sunset soundscape smoking ceremony on Saturday night, facilitated by Nikki James.

The festival has also opened up to families, with a designated kid’s area offering arts activities and wetland education information for adults and children.

There will also be an attempt to set the world record for the largest number of people simultaneously howling at the full moon, taking place at 3am on Sunday morning.

Youth art exhibition is opening this week at MAMA ANNUAL youth exhibition RAW24 will open at the Murray Art Museum Albury on Friday, February 2.

RAW is an annual open call for young people from the Murray region.

Artists aged 16 to 21 are invited to submit an artwork, or a small series of artworks, for consideration for the group exhibition.

RAW aims to highlight the creative strengths of local young people, inviting those with a passion for art – whether they are attending school, are formally trained or none of the above – to

present their work in a professional gallery setting and showcase their practice to a broader audience.

Of a record number of applications received, 12 artists were selected to participate in the 2024 exhibition including Alexander Leeworthy, Benny Mills, Brigitte Ford, Ella Spokes, Emily Dove, Jack Walter, Jairus Smerdone, Logan Warnaar, Madeleine Steer, Opal Davidson, Sophie Swinton and Toby Robinson.

The 2024 exhibition will present timely themes around self-identity, mental

health and body positivity, while others draw inspiration from history and mythology.

Visitors will experience a range of mediums including painting, drawing, photography, digital media, sculpture and installation.

An important component of the RAW program is a series of professional development workshops with participating finalists, led by MAMA curatorial staff.

The workshops introduce and support concept development, artwork preparation, exhibition installation and public

programming, as well as feedback for future projects.

This provides a space for young local artists to come together, develop skills, collaborate, and have agency in the generation and output of the RAW exhibition and related public programs.

The official opening of RAW24 will be held on Friday, February 2 from 5.30pm to 7pm with refreshments served while attendees view the works on display.

It is a free public event with all welcome.

RAW24 will be on display at MAMA until March 17.

VETERAN local cattle producer Graham Nicol remains optimistic sales prices at this week’s two Blue Ribbon Weaner Sales at the Wangaratta livestock selling exchange will be better than the below average sale prices in 2023.

Wangaratta’s blue ribbon weaner sales are on Wednesday, January 31 with 4000 steers up for offer, and Friday, Feburary 2 with 2600 heifers on offer - both sales commence at 9am.

Mr Nicol, whp runs 300 Alpine Angus cattle on his 777 acre Faldinghurst property at East Wangaratta, will offer 100 Alpine Angus up for sale this week.

The 88 year old, who has been in the industry for 74 year, sees a more promising outlook for 2024 with cattle prices set to rise.

“Prices have been below average over the last 12 months, however, things are starting to take a turn for the better,” he said.

“I expect this year to go in leaps and bounds which will bring back confidence to producers.

THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) says answers are needed over where the Commonwealth Government is intending to take water from and for what purpose following changes to the Murray Darling Basin Plan.

VFF president Emma Germano has written to Commonwealth Water Minister Tanya Plibersek, voicing concerns that the “unclear, scatter-gun approach to environmental water buybacks” will not work and that Victoria will once again unfairly be burdened with excessive water buybacks.

“The VFF is very concerned about the implications of the Bill for Victoria,” she said.

“Removal of the buyback cap and bypassing the socio-economic test highlights a Federal Government with little interest in those that will be impacted.

“The VFF is deeply concerned about the Commonwealth’s omission in setting any valley targets for water recovery and there being no identification of any environmental outcomes which they seek toachieve.

“Recovering water downstream here in Victoria and thinking it’ll benefit areas such as the Darling River and Menindee Lakes is complete fantasy.

“We are seeking clarification from the Commonwealth as to what valley targets will be established across the Northern and Southern Basins as well as identifying related environmental outcomes togive farmers and rural communities some understanding of what amount of water is being targeted and for which area.

Teens look to the future with uni

WANGARATTA High School year 12 graduates Kayla Fisher and Amy Henderson were among hundreds of local students, and tens of thousands around the state, who received their first round university offers yesterday.

The pair are both interested

in humanitarian work and development, and were offered their first choice course at their chosen universities.

Kayla, 17, has been offered a

double degree in Arts and Public Policy with a major in third-world development at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“I was happy with my ATAR score even if I thought I could do better but it’s been a tough year,” Kayla said.

“It was difficult not having feedback from classmates because I didn’t know if I was doing okay or needed to improve.

“But, I got there in the end and am

looking forward to the next step.”

Amy, 18, will be doing occupational therapy at Deakin but hopes to branch into humanitarian work in third world countries.

“I had hoped for a higher ATAR but I didn’t need one, I’m pretty happy with how I went,” Amy said.

“Last year I really missed out on having the balance of sport and social aspects of school which really help me get through the study aspect.

“The offer I received was my first choice so I’m really happy with that.

“I’ll jump straight in this year I think because my initial plans to have a gap year and travel aren’t likely now.

“Eventually I want to go into allied health overseas and Kayla and I have always talked about collaborating; she’s more interested in the politics side and I’d do the health side so that could be cool.”

‘Sloppy’ RUB Hawks clean up Beechworth Wanderers in style

ROVERS United Bruck (RUB) has all but secured a top two finish to the WDCA A grade two-day season following a 105 run victory over Beechworth Wanderers on Saturday.

After making 5/263 last weekend, the Hawks knocked the Wanderers over for 158 runs, before batting on and making 3/68.

Beechworth’s much-lauded top order failed to fire, with Clancy Ellett (three) and Kayde Surrey (22) removed cheaply, and after Cam Fendyk fell for 19, Beechworth were in trouble at 3/66.

Brenton Surrey was the lone aggressor, belting 92 from 136 deliveries with 10 fours and a six.

However, Surrey had no one to go with him, with the bottom seven batters contributing four runs between them.

RUB skipper Paddy McNamara said while the result went their way, he felt more improvements were needed.

“We probably had a bit of a sloppy day,” he said.

“We didn’t bowl overly well early, we dropped a couple of catches, but we managed to grab some which led to a 100run victory which was mainly set up with the bat.

“We identified if we could get a few early wickets, their bottom order probably hasn’t had much opportunity to have a good bat this season due to their top order being so successful.

“We knew once we got those top few out, we could roll through their bottom order, which we did really well.

“Brenton (Surrey) batted really well, I think we dropped him four times, but he really stuck it out.

“It could’ve been a better result for us, but I’m pretty happy with the points.”

For the Hawks, McNamara reaped the rewards of his team’s solid bowling, finishing with season-best figures of 5/28 from his 15 overs, while Josh Ansell picked up 2/25.

“I got in a good rhythm, tried to hit a spot,” he said.

“We had ‘Schona’ (Jacob Schonafinger) out, so someone had to fill that role, coming on first change and try and build some pressure.

“It was nice to get a couple of wickets to the name, so I can’t complain.

“Since we batted so well last week, not everyone got a hit, so it was good to go back in.

“The best practice is to bat out in the middle, so whenever you get that opportunity, it’s important to take it.”

The Hawks sit second on the two-day ladder, trailing Yarrawonga Mulwala by 12.4 points, with three long format matches remaining before finals.

In other matches, the Lakers made 6/277 chasing City Colts’ 10/97, Ovens Valley United recorded a 56 run win over Benalla Bushrangers, and Wangaratta Magpies rolled through Delatite after chasing down the 103 target.

Stafford then sent one right through the stumps, securing the hat-trick, before Guilfoyle finished off the innings.

“The bowling was pretty good in stages there, and at times they were right on top with the bat,” Davies said.

“We brought ‘Staf’ (Charlie Stafford) on who’d fielded pretty well, he let rip and managed to get three in a row.

“We knew we needed to get as many wickets as we can, that was the plan, just bowl attacking, make sure they’re playing at each ball, he reaped the rewards.

“We know we’ve got another gear to go to, and given the ladder’s so close with teams competing for that third and fourth spot, we know we can’t really set a foot wrong if we’re going to give ourselves a chance.

“The ball’s in our court for that now, we’ve got to do everything we can to make sure we’re there at the back end of the season.”

Jack Lacey finishes a class above

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN A SURREAL seven days for Bayswater’s Jack Lacey was capped off with a commanding run to claim the men’s Wangaratta Gift at the Wangaratta Showgrounds on Saturday night.

Coming into Wangaratta in scorching hot form with a gift win in Frankston just a week prior, Lacey was a class above throughout the evening, carrying his superior heat and semi form into the winning run.

Lacey said he was elated to join the esteemed list of Wangaratta Gift winners after multiple goes at the sash.

“It feels good, I stumbled at the start a little bit so I got a bit panicked but was able to compose myself in the end,” he said.

“I was feeling confident with my times but you nev-

er know what can happen in a final, people love finals so they always pick up.

“I didn’t know if I would be able to go back-to-back in the gift wins but coming down to Wang, I always love running down here, it’s a great track.”

Despite his slight stumble at his starting marker in the middle of the field at a handicap of 9m, Lacey reeled in frontmarkers Ryan Camille (9.25m) and Callum James (11.25) to put a gap between the field at the halfway point which wouldn’t be closed.

Backmarker Jared Glover (7.50m) flew to the finish line in the final 25m to fall a tenth short of Lacey’s winning time of 12.337sec, with fellow backmarker Jesse Cordoma (7.50m) from South Australia taking home third in a tight finish for the last place on the podium.

Under the guidance of coach Nick Fiedler, the 26-year-old getting himself in the right state of mind with his running training has been key to hitting his strides in January.

“The season has been good, I’ve really started to show my form now which is good,” Lacey said.

“I had a few rough patches in early December where I started to doubt myself a little bit but I thought, new year, let’s start it off with a bang and we did.

“A lot of it was just mental, keeping my composure and just remaining calm no matter what happens.”

Lacey was slated to defend his 2023 Shepparton Gift crown on Sunday, but said his Wangaratta win and $3000 pay cheque was reason enough to take the day off.

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN BALLARAT’S Chloe Kinnersley has played spoiler to hometown hero and friend Bella Pasquali in the women’s 120m Wangaratta Gift final, taking home the prestigious sash in a thriller at the Wangaratta Showgrounds on Saturday night.

Starting from the middle of the field at a 9.25m handicap, Kinnersley timed her run to perfection as she passed through the front and did just enough to sneak by second placed Olivia Barry (11.25m) with just over 20 hundredths of a second between them.

13.881sec bested an impressive field boasting backmarker Pasquali (2.5m), last year’s Wangaratta Gift winner Lucy Zotti (11.75m), Laura Mcdougall (16.25m) and pre-race favourite Zoe Neale (4.75m), who stormed home to claim third place.

Kinnersley said she surprised herself with her exceptional run in the final, and was overwhelmed with joy to be crowned a gift winner.

“I wasn’t expecting to win, I was thinking maybe a second or a third expecting Zoe to come over the top of me or one of them at the front, so it was a really good race actually,” she said.

Kinnersley showed strong form throughout the heats, qualifying for the final as second fastest in the semis, with Neale blistering her field in the second-semi and Pasquali doing just enough to sneak her way into the night’s main event.

“I was really nervous in the semis, I just didn’t want to run a 300 but I made it through to the final which was really good,” Kinnersley said.

“I was a bit nervous all day to be honest but I tried not to show it.

“I’ve had a good season, I’m just starting to make finals now; I wasn’t expecting to win this one but I’m

pretty stoked about it.”

Kinnersley trains with the Ballarat-based Pod squad under coach Peter O’Dwyer with the team making their voices well and truly heard as she crossed the line under the picturesque Norm Minns Oval lights.

It was a night the Kinnersley family won’t forget in a hurry, with Chloe’s brother Lachlan taking out two sashes earlier in the day in the 70m restricted and 400m restricted races.

Chloe said it was clear though who would be taking home bragging rights.

“I guess he was doing alright for a little bit but I think I might have it now,” she said.

HISTORY repeated itself at Sunday’s finals of the Premier Panels Australia Day tennis tournament at the Wangaratta lawn courts, with both the men’s and women’s open singles titles claimed by last year’s winners.

David Hough won 7-6, 7-6 against Matthew Peart in the men’s decider, in a direct rematch of last year’s final.

Melbourne’s Belle Thompson claimed the women’s title for the seventh time, triumphing 6-1, 6-0 against Phillipa Bush.
