DEMOCRACY SAUSAGE RESIDENTS turned out in droves to voting centres across the Ovens Valley electorate on Saturday, as Nationals incumbent Tim McCurdy maintained his hold of the electorate for a third consecutive term. With sunny weather over the polling stations, volunteers (from left) Cody Le Poidevin, Kalica Miliankos–King, Karen Mascas and Lesley Forman were busy at Wangaratta High School providing sausages and cold drinks to voters keen to beat the heat. Tim’s big swing McCurdyy to serve fourth term as state MP after increasing g his p primaryy vote in Ovens Valleyy

A FIRST preference vote expected to exceed 53 per cent in favour of Tim McCurdy will see the Ovens Valley incumbent return as the district’s state MP for a fourth consecutive term. With almost 80 per cent of votes counted as of yesterday morning, The Nationals’ incumbent boasted a 7.1

per cent swing in two-party preference voting, with 69.2 per cent of voters in favour of the party. Having received just shy of

45 per cent of first preference votes in 2018, Mr McCurdy said he was delighted to see an increase of more than eight per cent this time around. Labor candidate Zuvele Leschen (20.58 per cent), Greens candidate Zoe Kromar (8.3 per cent) and Liberal Democrat Julian Fidge (6.76 per cent) made up

the numbers as Mr McCurdy largely dominated the vote. “The support the local people have given me to get back in again - it’s looking like it will be a 50 per cent primary vote or more which I’m just really grateful for,” he said. “I do work hard in my own mind and in my own place and people have reflected

that in the vote and I just couldn’t be happier.” However, despite prepolling suggesting outgoing Liberal leader Matt Guy could be well placed to lead a Coalition government in the coming years, a resounding victory for Labor as of yesterday morning is set to leave Mr McCurdy in

opposition once again. “Sadly we’re back in opposition again but certainly for the people of Ovens Valley I’ll just keep doing the best we can do and keep being their local voice and their local champion,” Mr McCurdy said. ■ Continued page 2 ■ How we voted page 2
