FREE STAGE JOY Wangaratta g Club offers venue for jjazz and blues festival’s free outdoor stage g events

SPACE provided by the Wangaratta Club will enable the free outdoor stage element of the final Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues to go ahead on the first weekend in November. The Saturday afternoon/ evening session will channel the spirit of the much-loved former Reid Street free stage, with local performers set to entertain the public between 4pm and 8pm on November 4.

Festival chair Dave Fuller said the club had offered its bowling green area for use, in response to a recent Wangaratta Chronicle article calling for support of the free stage. He said the central location of the Wangaratta Club, with

fencing and security already in place at the venue, ensured it was cost-effective for the festival board. “The club has offered not only their space, but their services, with the bar and food offering available for patrons to purchase during the event,” he said. “We are looking for a community group to potentially host a barbecue at the site as well. “In this location, it’s a bit of

a nod to Reid Street; it could be called ‘Reid off Reid’.” Mr Fuller said local performers were being sourced to fill the schedule for the four-hour event, which would again be an opportunity to highlight the district’s talent. Wangaratta Club general manager Daniel Peacock, said he had started work in the rural city just this year and had never had a chance to attend the festival, but

knew many people who had soaked up the atmosphere of the event in the past. “I’m very familiar with the branding, and I know how many people enjoy it,” he said. “I think it will be greatly missed. “This (free stage) is an opportunity to send the event off with a bang or, on the flip-side, to offer a bit of impetus for it to keep going in some form. “If the festival does go

ahead in some form, I think this opportunity could potentially still be on the table. “It’s a ready-made venue for that kind of event. “I’m really glad we’ve been able to help. “Any support a registered club can give back to the community, that’s why we’re here.” ■ Continued page 4 ■ Wilbur Wilde can’t wait to be back at festival - page 4
