Court told woman continued alleged stalking plot A WOMAN who assisted with the ongoing harassment of a Boweya man after accessing his medical records was alleged to have done so at the request of a female former co-worker.

The 50-year-old resident of the Rural City of Wangaratta fronted Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Monday, pleading guilty to a single charge of using a carriage service to harass after she allegedly sent two texts from phone boxes at Glenrowan and Barnawartha to a 60-year-old man earlier this year.

The court heard her victim, an employee at a local health service, was the alleged victim of ongoing stalking behaviour by a 53-year-old Wangaratta woman since 2019, the responsibility for which was passed onto the accused following the other woman’s arrest late last year.

The 53-year-old co-accused woman is expected to face court in September, and is alleged to have repeatedly sent letters to the man’s home address and left cards on the windscreen of his vehicle while parked near his workplace

after retrieving his contact details from medical records.

Police prosecutor Constable Victoria Lennon detailed how phone conversations between the pair had commenced shortly after the co-accused’s arrest in December, having previously struck up a relationship while working together at a Wangaratta health provider throughout 2021.

She said the accused had subsequently sent texts from a Glenrowan phone box on January 25 and a Barnawartha phone box

on February 11 wishing the victim a happy Australia Day and Valentine’s Day respectively, allegedly using different grammar to that previously used by the coaccused.

She was observed on CCTV footage and bus camera footage at both locations as texts were received by the victim.

Defence counsel Steven Sartori said despite initially refusing to divulge to police how she had learned the contact details of the victim, his client had ultimately co-operated with the investigation.

He said his client had shown significant remorse after learning the true nature of her involvement.

“This is a serious matter and the way my client has come to be involved is quite convoluted,” he said.

“She can be loyal to a fault - she thought she was helping a friend but she was actually being misled and used by that friend.

“She’s very, very remorseful of any effect she’s had on the victim - she appreciates that what she’s done is wrong.”

APCO Wangaratta the best of its kind APCO directors, Robert, Peter, Ron and Margaret Anderson, along with the APCO Wangaratta retailers Brett and Karen Anderson, have been stunned to have their Wangaratta service station named the Asia-Pacific Convenience Store of the Year by NACS. APCO is a member of the Australian Association of Convenience Stores (AACS), the peak body for convenience retailing in Australia, who in turn is a member of the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) based in the United States, the largest and oldest representative for convenience retailers globally.

NACS segment the global retailers into two zones - the Asia Pacific region and the European regions.

The Asia Pacific region includes all of Asia, India, Australia and New Zealand.

The AACS runs an annual competition to identify the latest in store formats, retail innovation and brand development to identify the best Australian convenience retailer.

The judging criteria is aligned with the NACS Global criteria to ensure consistency of the process.

In March 2022, APCO Wan-

garatta was awarded the Australian Convenience Retailer of the Year award, which automatically enters them into the NACS Asia Pacific Convenience Retailer of the Year Award.

The awards were held at the NACS APAC Convenience Retail Summit in Singapore on July 20 with more than 15 entries into this award category, and the judging panel selected three finalists.

Australian retailers were strongly represented with two of the three finalists positions.

Store owner Brett said the directors are in shock.

“We like to provide a good service to our locals and the people who pass through Wangaratta, but we never dreamed we’d be named the best convenience store in Victoria or even Australia, never mind the Asia-Pacific,” he said.

Peter Anderson agreed.

“We are extremely proud to have accepted this award,” he said.

“Brett and Karen are a big part in this because without their passion it would not have happened.

“But it is also the team; everybody at head office, retail partners and the last few franchisees we have has played a part.”

Robert Anderson was equally proud of the team.

“It is a testament to the collective effort of everyone to share a vision and then bring this to life, and importantly this is a well-deserved award for Brett and Karen, our retail partners that pride themselves and are passionate on providing an incredible customer experience.”

Theo Foukkare, chief executive of the Australian Association of Convenience Stores, said it was a welcome recognition of the quality and value that small retail outlets bring to their communities. ‘’We are thrilled for APCO Wangaratta,” he said.

WANGARATTA Players are holding auditions for the upcoming play “Barefoot in the Park” by acclaimed author and playwright Neil Simon this Thursday, July 28 from 6pm and Saturday, July 30 from 2pm at the Stage Door, 4D Evans Street, Wangaratta.

The romantic comedy was Neil Simon’s longest-running hit, and the tenth-longest running non-musical play in Broadway history.

It was also made into a highly successful motion picture.

Fishing, boating forum for North East enthusiasts THE Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) will hold a fishing and boating forum in Wodonga for North East enthusiasts in late August.

The free forum is an opportunity for recreational fishers and boaters to come together, learn more about what is being done to improve their much-loved pastimes, and share ideas on what could make them better.

VFA chief executive officer Travis Dowling said the forum will feature hour-long presentations covering topics such as better access, ramp upgrades, fish cleaning tables, science and research, enforcement and education.

“With subject matter experts there, attendees will get answers to all those questions that are debated with mates while in the boat or by a river somewhere,” he said.

“These forums a great opportunity to suggest a project that will make a difference to your local water.”

Multi-tasking role for new priest in charge

By SIMONE KERWIN MULTI-TASKING is the way of the world these days, and new Wangaratta West and the Warbys Anglican parish priest, the Venerable Neil Hicks, is a prime example.

Just a few days after his induction to the parish role, which covers St Michael’s (Wangaratta), St Paul’s (Glenrowan) and St George’s (Taminick), Neil had also assumed his full responsibilities as VicarGeneral of the Wangaratta diocese, as Bishop Clarence Bester flew out to attend the Lambeth Conference in Canterbury.

Since 2020, he has also been Archdeacon of Wangaratta, an administrative role which includes consulting with community members when clergy vacancies arise, and helping to manage the diocese’s property - a particular consideration amid the current rationalisation of buildings to match needs and funds.

The almost 63-year-old’s move to Wangaratta comes after four and a half years in the Yarrawonga parish where, when he first arrived in 2017, he was appointed to the Cobram Anglican Grammar School council; he remains school council chair, and hopes to continue in the role.

Neil, who grew up in Tongala, and wife Sue have now moved several times in their married life, from Mildura, to Robinvale/ Manangatang, to Point Lonsdale, then Sale, Balwyn North, and Geelong before arriving in Yarrawonga, and now Wangaratta.

While he had thought at one stage that he would retire while in Yarrawonga, Neil said: “Every time

“The combination of two halftime tasks (as priest in charge of Wangaratta West and the Warbys, and as Archdeacon) is a challenge, but we have received tremendously encouraging words from the locals, so I feel we must be doing the right thing.”

Neil felt the call to ministry in his early 20s, and pursued his theological studies in Adelaide, spending time in Bendigo and Maryborough before meeting Sue in Mildura.

He said the evolving role of the parish priest, particularly during the “odd” times of the pandemic as many people had not returned to regular church attendance, had

been interesting to witness.

“The parish is gradually having to wind back the days it can afford clergy, and while some people like to have a clear physical presence in the community, young people are not as fixated on that,” he said.

However, Neil firmly believes there is great value to be gained from involvement in and connection to faith.

“We want people to discover it, obviously,” he said.

“It was interesting to read the other day about the high rate of suicide, particularly among young males.

“One of the things that says to me is that many people have a lack of purposefulness in life.

“We all need something that gives us a bit of an anchor, some-

thing to hang onto that’s part of the bigger picture.

“If your only inputs at those tough times are what you’re getting on YouTube and Netflix, you can see how it would be fairly dismal, as they are often not positive messages.

“Ultimately, the Gospel message is positive: God knows you because he made you, he loves you, because he was prepared to die at the hands of cruel people, rather than bringing in ballistic missiles to defeat them.”

Neil and Sue have relocated to Wangaratta with their seven-yearold dog, a “mixture” named Jack, and are no doubt enjoying the continued success of their beloved Geelong, which is currently sitting atop the AFL ladder.

Across the state there were 12,009 new cases reported yester-

day, with 40 deaths, taking total lives lost since the pandemic began to 4401 deaths in Victoria, with 2790 this year.

Former teacher to fight sexual assault charges A FORMER North East secondary school teacher intends to fight allegations of sexual assault, despite defence counsel detailing no conversations around the matter had taken place with police prosecutors.

The 27-year-old was charged with sexual assault by touching, common law assault and unlawful assault against three separate victims earlier this year, following an investigation into a number of incidents alleged to have taken place between January 2020 and May last year.

Facing Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Monday, defence counsel George Kominakis said he had not engaged with prosecutors in an effort to resolve the matter, instead announcing his intention to take the case directly to a contest mention.

“Our client denies the allegations and wants to contest all the charges,” Mr Kominakis told the court.

The matter is set to return to court on September 1.

Man charged after umpire assault A TANGAMBALANGA man alleged to have carried out a violent attack on a junior football umpire will return to court later this year.

The 47-year-old was allegedly in attendance at an U/14s match at Yarrawonga’s JC Lowe Oval on Sunday morning, when he was said to have become angry before allegedly approaching and assaulting the umpire around 11:20am.

According to a police spokesperson, the 49-year-old Yarrawonga man received nonlife-threatening injuries following the altercation.

“The Tangambalanga man was arrested and charged with recklessly cause injury, make threats to kill and unlawful assault,” the spokesperson said.

He was subsequently bailed to front Cobram Magistrates’ Court in October.

ONCE upon a time, in a land before streaming services, Wangaratta audiences had access to the same three or four TV channels, and waited to consume their favourite shows - usually weekly or daily.

‘Bingeing’ was not an option (unless you recorded multiple episodes and watched them in succession) and the sense of anticipation while waiting for the next instalment added to your enjoyment.

In those days, there were many more conversations that started with: “Did you see last night’s episode...?”, creating connections, as viewers were all on the same page not worried they may reveal ‘spoilers’ in everyday chats.

Viewing TV this way formed part of the backdrop of my growing-up years...as kids, we drew a fair whack of medical and rural knowledge from watching ‘A Country Practice’, and knew when we heard the piano-led closing credits that it was bedtime; I remember visiting my Nan and being invited to sit with her to watch her “stories”, including Aussie soap ‘Sons & Daughters’; and, as I entered my teens, there was ‘Home & Away’, and of course, ‘Neighbours’.

Living in a regional Victorian city,

BACK TOGETHER: Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue are among the familiar faces returning to Ramsay Street this week, in a nostalgic final episode many Wangaratta residents will savour.

PHOTO: Network Ten the lifestyle and interaction between those linked to Ramsay Street, in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough, was probably as close as TV got to mirroring real life...albeit with a decent extra dollop of drama.

Like many, I idolised the show’s young stars, including Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce.

When there was a ‘Neighbours’ exhibition at Melbourne’s Arts Centre, my siblings and I jumped at the chance to step through the set of

the Robinsons’ lounge-room. And I even walked down the aisle at my own wedding to the same song Charlene did when she married Scott on ‘Neighbours’ (Angry Anderson’s ‘Suddenly’).

So it’s with a mixture of excitement and sadness that I await the final episode of the Channel Ten series tomorrow night, as it bows out with the promise that some of Ramsay Street’s most famous residents will return home.

Many familiar faces have already

made their way back, which has been great fun to watch, as they’ve given nods to the past, whetting appetites for the long-awaited reappearance of Scott and Charlene on the street.

This final episode signals not only the end of an Australian TV institution, but the loss of one of the last bastions of that golden time before the short-attention-span social media era; a time when people were happy to wait for the screening of their favourite show and watch it together, rather than racing through each episode.

There’s a reason why ‘bingeing’ is not a healthy approach to eating, and it similarly applies to television viewing: it detracts from both the digestion and enjoyment of the fare on offer.

So as I - like many other Wangaratta district residents - sit down tomorrow at 7.30pm for the 90-minute final episode of ‘Neighbours’, it will be a chance to slow down and savour this show for the last time - all together (or, if you really must, catch-up later on 10Play).

I’m hoping for a fitting farewell to an old friend; let’s hope it’s in keeping with the original family feel of the show - less bombs and tragedy, and more fond hugs and smiles filling Australia’s most famous cul-desac. Maybe even one last game of street cricket...

A DRIVE to support local conservation efforts will provide makeshift housing for native fauna throughout bushfireaffected areas in the region.

Set to take place on Saturday, a community workshop aimed at developing nest boxes for possums, gliders and bird species impacted by the 2019-20 bushfire season will be overseen by landscape restoration group Swamps, Rivers & Ranges, as attendees are guided through the practical steps involved in creating suitable accommodation for local species.

Nestboxes have long been used throughout the region to create ‘artificial’ hollows for native fauna to use, particularly

in areas where the availability of natural hollows has been significantly reduced.

Swamps, Rivers & Ranges project coordinator Sophie Enders said the event would cover all of the important aspects of nestbox building.

“With so many resources available on building and designing nestboxes, the day will be a good opportunity to discuss the options available, how to select the right box for your needs and how to go about building it,” she said.

“We will have hands on opportunities and examples on the day to help those keen on building their own boxes to see, touch and ask questions about

how we go about it.

“It will also be a good chance to discuss with others who are interested in the similar topics and learn more about what Swamps, Rivers and Ranges do.”

Brawl accused placed on bond A WANGARATTA man who became embroiled in a brawl after his friend punched a man unconscious in the middle of Tone Road earlier this year placed his victim in a headlock and punched him repeatedly to the head, drawing blood.

The 25-year-old faced Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Monday, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless cause injury one week after a teenage co-accused was handed a $2400 fine following an assault two magistrates agreed could

have had potentially fatal consequences.

The court heard the pair had visited a nearby restaurant about 11pm on February 5, when they engaged in friendly conversation with a group of men they would eventually brawl with on Wangaratta’s main thoroughfare.

After leaving the restaurant the accused and coaccused were said to have crossed the road, before yelling at a group milling loudly outside the restaurant to “shut up”.

The victims, thinking the request had been levelled at them, were then alleged to have crossed the road towards the accused, when the co-accused threw an initial punch which left one victim unconscious after he fell and hit his head on the road surface.

Leading Senior Constable Les Hare said another man had rushed to the aid of his friend, placing the accused in a headlock before he was repeatedly punched to the head by the pair while pinned against a fence.

LSC Hare said both men then fled towards Perry Street, leaving their victim bleeding from the head in the care of witnesses at the scene.

Both victims were transported to Northeast Health Wangaratta for observation, before the accused was ultimately arrested at his home address.

In a police interview, the court heard the accused told arresting officers a victim had initially approached the pair and removed his wallet and keys from his pockets,

acting as though he wanted to fight.

The defendant initially intimated he had acted in selfdefence, however, defence counsel Geoff Clancy said his client had “acted excessively”.

“My client understands these things can end up quite badly,” he said.

“There were some very poor choices made by all parties in this incident.”

He said his client suffered from an intellectual disability and had no history of violent offending.

Magistrate Peter Mithen said the accused’s actions could have easily seen him face the County Court or be brought up on a charge of murder had the outcome been different.

“You know where it all went wrong,” he said.

“There’s not much difference between (your) punch and a punch that (kills).”

Mr Mithen imposed a 12-month good behaviour bond without conviction, and ordered the accused donate $500 to the court fund.

UPPER Murray Family Care will continue a program aimed at boosting the involvement of vulnerable children in afterschool activities, with the help of a Wangaratta RSL sub-branch community grant.

Provided as part of the RSL sub-branch’s annual community grants program which helps local groups deliver benefits to those in need, the $7000 grant will be used to support UMFC’s Active Kids Wangaratta program.

It follows the RSL’s $5000 contribution to the program as part of last year’s grants program.

“Experts in child advancement suggest that participation in extracurricular activities on a regular basis is the best way to help children develop,” Steve Thompson, senior project manager at UMFC, said.

“This generous donation from Wangaratta RSL allows children from disadvantaged families the opportunity to participate in after-school sports and activities that other kids might take for granted.”

Mr Thompson said UMFC acknowledged that many people in the local community were

going through a tough time amid the pandemic and cost-of-living pressures.

He said UMFC was delighted to continue its partnership with the RSL and local sporting clubs and associations to give a significant number of vulnerable children the chance to enjoy the same experiences as their peers.

“These opportunities will further their development and increase their sense of selfworth, while also increasing the wellbeing of their families,” he said.

“Children from vulnerable families will know that the community they live in cares for and supports them.”

Community groups lead social support LOCAL community grant schemes continue to represent a beacon of hope for local residents experiencing hardships, particularly as challenges have become increasingly widespread in recent years.

The world has thrown plenty of curveballs at the local population, but the beauty of our township is the ability for key community groups to re-invest into the people of Wangaratta, in an effort to minimise or completely eradicate hardships which may arise on a day-to-day basis.

The most recent commitment by Wangaratta’s RSL sub-branch of $7000 into Upper Murray Family Care’s Active Kids Wangaratta program continues the branch’s rich tradition of supporting the local community, building on a $5000 investment last year.

The program promises to provide improved social outcomes for at-risk children and promote the learning of valuable skills through sporting involvement and programs such as Girl Guides and Scouts, as long as parents make a long-term commitment to support their child in their pursuits in the ensuing years.

It’s a program that endeavours to create lifelong change among vulnerable young people, in turn supporting the health of the family environment and network.

Social isolation and frequent interruptions to normal life have become increasingly commonplace since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, hence ongoing work will be required to establish a sense of social normality for the region’s children.

Local community groups and organisations are continuing to help lay the platform to do so.

ARTC plans show contempt for heritage COMING from pioneer stock, I must say that the proposed Glenrowan Rail Bridge represents a seemingly continuous contempt for history and heritage in this area.

Provenance being the recent destruction of stands of remnant trees in Christensen’s Lane and the Osboldstone Road area.

This monstrous expensive edifice stands to ruin the entire aesthetics of the area at a very high price to all, by ruining the heritage value, dominating it at the expense of the conceptualisation of what Glenrowan may have looked like in the Kelly era borders on more wonton destruction.

Surely in times when we are complaining about fossil fuel usage and so-called climate change, this is not the long term way to go?

It has always been a long uphill climb from the west of Wangaratta to Glenrowan.

Even as far back as WWII the German military saw considerable advantage and savings in reducing the gradients on captured rail lines.

Where is this lot’s thinking?

I have seen no data on the likely long term advantages offered in lower stresses on locomotives and fuel saving with a shallower gradient, along with no need for a bridge that big and perhaps capping the cutting later on, improving the aesthetics as that capping could be covered, after deepening that cutting, to lower the gradient.

However, there is the risk that it may cost less monetarily and more so environmentally by actually creating more open space for plants and parkland with in the town.

As I said in the aftermath of the federal election, skilled migration as part of a suite of strategies is critical to ensuring the government’s commitment of a registered nurse in residential aged care facilities 24/7 is met.

We are seeing health and aged care systems that are in crisis as nurses and health professionals bravely lead their communities through a third winter of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Urgent support measures, like those announced today, are essential to all Australians receiving high-quality nursing care for generations to come.

It’s important the government provide support for those who will move to Australia on a permanent basis to pursue a nursing career and stated this will be imperative for long term success.

Any nurse who wishes to make our beautiful nation their home should be welcomed with open arms.

However, the process is long, complex and difficult to navigate.

The government must ensure any nurses wishing to permanently move here are

supported through all aspects of their journey, from completing the necessary education requirements to becoming a valued member of their local community and everywhere in-between.

As I have constantly stated during the last few months, ACN stands willing to work with any jurisdiction to spearhead an international recruitment campaign to bring more nurses to our shores.

If we don’t welcome these nurses, another country will.

Terry Floyd’s legacy continues

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE ANOTHER $1000 has been donated to local schools by the Terry Floyd Foundation, an organisation dedicated to educating regional children about personal and cyber safety and supporting disadvantaged children.

The Terry Floyd Foundation was set up in memory of Terry Floyd, aged 12, who was abducted and murdered while waiting for a lift home from Avoca to Maryborough in Victoria on June 28, 1975.

It was established in March 2019 by Daryl Floyd, Terry’s younger brother.

The foundation has donated the funding to the local MARC Van, which brings a mobile library to local schools including Springhurst, Carraragarmungee, Chiltern, Glenrowan and Winton.

Hume Bank has become the latest corporate to throw their support behind the Terry Floyd Foundation.

said the bank was “proud to support organisations that contribute back to the development and wellbeing of residents and their communities”.

“Keeping children safe both online and offline and ensuring they all have brighter futures is something we are extremely passionate about,” he said.

Daryl Floyd said the foundation was “incredibly grateful” to all sponsors and partners.

“As soon as we met and explained what we do, the team at Hume Bank could not have been more supportive,” he said.

“We are lucky to have such a community minded bank based here locally.

“Without supporters like Hume Bank, there is only so much that can be achieved by our volunteers.

“Their support will allow us to support more schools and vulnerable children,

supporting us to deliver upon and amplify our purpose,” Mr Floyd said.

Mr Floyd also mentioned that Wangaratta-based state MP Tania Maxwell has expressed support for the foundation and recently spoke highly of the cause in her June parliament sitting.

“It was a bittersweet moment last month when I met with Daryl Floyd in Wangaratta,” she said.

“I had a long conversation with Daryl, and it was evident that after 47 years he is still highly emotional and devastated that his brother’s remains have not been found.

“I have made a pledge to Daryl that I will seek to do whatever I can to have this cold case reopened so that Daryl and his family can finally find answers and put Terry’s body to rest as it should be, and I hope the government will consider this request.

“I applaud Daryl and the foundation for the funds they raise to support vulnerable children in our communities and to provide scholarships for rural students in need.”

MPs sworn in as 47th parliament opens

MPs and senators have gathered in Canberra for the first time since the election for the official opening of the 47th parliament.

Members of both the House of Representatives and the Senate were sworn in on Tuesday, after the parliament was opened by chief justice Susan Kiefel.

After an ecumenical church service, MPs gathered for a welcome to country and smoking ceremony at Parliament House.

The Senate then elected WA Labor senator Sue Lines

as president, while the House of Representatives chose Queensland Labor MP Milton Dick as Speaker.

Governor-General David Hurley will later in the day lay out the government’s agenda in a speech to both houses before debate begins.

Speaking at the welcome to country ceremony, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated the need to enshrine an Indigenous Voice to parliament in the constitution.

He said MPs needed to use

their time in parliament to the fullest.

“So I say to everyone here - all of my parliamentary colleagues - don’t miss the chance because you’re not here for that long. None of us will be,” he said.

“When you’re sitting on the porch, thinking about what you did, you can either have a source of pride or a source of regret. There’s no middle path.”

The Labor government is set to introduce 18 pieces of legislation in the first sitting week, following nine years

on the opposition benches.

The government plans to introduce legislation for a new carbon-emissions target, domestic violence leave, creating the agency Jobs and Skills Australia, and agedcare reform measures.

A private member’s bill paving the way for the Northern Territory and ACT to debate and potentially legislate for voluntary euthanasia will be introduced to parliament next Monday.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton paid tribute in the welcome to country ceremo-

ny to the record number of Indigenous MPs taking their place at parliament for the new term.

“We’re incredibly proud of the fact we have eight senators, three members of the House of Representatives, as part of this 47th parliament,” he said.

“There’s an incredible amount of work in front of us to improve the lives of Indigenous Australians, to do what past governments, both Liberal and Labor, and leaders in our communities, have strived to do but fallen

short in their endeavours.”

Mr Albanese said he wanted to see more unity in the parliament.

“I want to see a parliament that functions much better than the last one. One where there’s genuine debate and dialogue and discussion,” he told reporters in Canberra.

“I want more unity, less division. I want to bring the country together with a sense of our common purpose, which is there.”

There are 35 new lower house members and 12 new senators.

Parliament elects newest Speaker of House QUEENSLAND MP Milton Dick has been elected as the 32nd Speaker of the House of Representatives.

First elected to federal parliament in 2016, Mr Dick was formerly a Brisbane City councillor and Queensland Labor state secretary.

Mr Dick was described as a generous soul, careful listener, thoughtful and reasonable with a “prodigious memory for numbers” by his colleagues.

“I have no doubt he would earn this place’s respect in his role as

Speaker,” Labor MP Susan Templeman said.

The opposition endorsed former speaker Andrew Wallace for the role.

Liberal MP Karen Andrews said Mr Wallace was an experienced parliamentarian and urged her colleagues and the crossbench to consider him for the role.

“I would urge the new members of parliament to consider his experience as a previous Speaker of the House,” she said.

‘Land banking’ is costing Australians $6b: report HOME buyers have forked out almost $6 billion extra to buy property on the outskirts of major Australian cities in the past decade following “land banking” by developers.

A new report from economic think tank Prosper Australia analysed 26,000 sales at nine major masterplanned housing developments across Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

It found 23.8 per cent of those sites cleared for sale by state governments were sold

over a 9.5-year span.

Instead of land prices falling as supply opened up, the cost of the average lot grew by an average 5.5 per cent annually after adjusting for inflation.

The release delays helped push up the cost of an average lot by $194,010 across the estates in Aura, Springfield and Yarrabilba in Queensland; Willowdale, Jordan Springs and Googong in NSW; and Atherstone, Woodlea and Manor Lakes in Victoria.

Labor wants climate win within next fortnight THE Albanese government intends to speed its signature climate legislation through the lower house within the next fortnight, but does not expect it to pass the Senate until at least September.

The virtual reality film Bitja Wokka (Fire Country) is about local Bpangerang cultural burning practices.

The first of its kind in Australia, it immerses viewers in the Wangaratta bush and shares local indigenous cultural knowledge.

It was created by VR filmmakers PHORIA earlier this year and filmed in landscapes across the King Valley, Ovens Valley, Warby Ranges and Wangaratta river flats.

‘Uncle Dozer’ Atkinson developed the narrative and provided voiceover for the film, which investigates indigenous fire management practices and shares traditional owner perspectives on the local environment.

Rural City of Wangaratta manager of arts culture and events Simone Nolan said the film will be an educational tool for indigenous and non-indigenous community members, increasing the depth of understanding of local indigenous cultural practices and worldviews.

“The film aims to increase people’s connection to country and learn how fire, when used safely, can be a valuable tool in

reducing bushfire threat in our communities,” she said.

Filming began in April this year at Mullinmur Billabong, with Uncle Dozer and a number of local Bpangerang elders showcasing the cultural practice of a cool burn.

Now finished, it will be shared with the Wangaratta community, along with an exhibition of artworks created during the different Spark workshops.

The Spark Bushfire Recovery project has been a 12 month community recovery project delivered by the Wangaratta Art Gallery.

It had included nature journaling workshops, weaving workshops and a commu-

nity choir which provided opportunities for the Wangaratta community to explore their relationship to nature and their connection to community in the aftermath of the 2020 bushfires.

The Spark project has focused on bushfire prevention and strengthening community resilience through learning about Indigenous Caring for Country practices.

The official opening including a viewing of the film will be held on Friday, July 29 from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the Wangaratta Art Gallery in Gallery 2.

Wangaratta High School LOCAL nurse and former Wangaratta High School parent, Robyn Marklew, recently visited as a guest speaker, addressing a Community Leadership Challenge (CLC) Group.

She gave a rousing presentation about her experiences trekking the Kokoda Trail in Papua New

Guinea, becoming a tour guide there and eventually starting the No Roads organisation, providing student packs to kids and educating local health workers to help lift health outcomes in PNG. Her talk touched on many key CLC concepts such as empathy, kindness, philanthropy, resilience

and gratitude, as well as delving into World War II history including her own grandfather’s story.

You could have heard a pin drop for the 50 minutes she spoke, which is testament to Ms Marklew and the students who were commended on their sustained display of respect.

Community updated on King Valley streetscape project FINE weather conditions have helped contractors get off to a promising start in the first stage of works to improve the Whitfield streetscape.

It’s one of a number under the Rural City of Wangaratta’s King Valley Prosecco Road Revitalisation Project, which received $4M in funding from the Victorian Government to complete.

Vehicles are on site, bollards are in place and construction is underway to create a T-intersection at the Wangaratta-Whitfield and Mansfield-Whitfield roads.

Council hosted a community meeting at the Whitfield Recreation Reserve last Wednesday to provide the public with an update on the works, with project manager Nathan Mullane advising it was progressing “reasonably well”.

He apologised to residents who may have experienced an issue with water supply on the day, explaining a pipe had been broken during the roadworks, which North East Water and the contractor worked quickly to repair.

“There is a lot to do, so hopefully the spring weather will be kind to us and we will be able to complete the works by the end of 2022, although we may leave the planting of trees until autumn next year, depending on the seasons,” he said.

Around 20 people attended the meeting in the A.C. Swinburne Pavilion, where council staff and the project team provided an update on the gateway entrance artwork project, Prosecco trail, Whitfield adventure playground and visitor hub and Cheshunt and Whitfield streetscape works.

Those in attendance were advised expressions of interest for the gateway entrance artworks, creating two significant public art pieces for the Mansfield-Whitfield Road in Whitfield at the Oxley roundabout, were closing, with proposals to be shortlisted.

VETERAN and family morning tea is held at the Wangaratta RSL on the second Tuesday of each month.

The group’s next catch-up is on Tuesday, August 9 from 10am to 11.30am.

RSPCA Victoria is at ‘CatPacity’ RSPCA Victoria will reduce the adoption price of cats and kittens to just $29 as part of its ‘CatPacity’ adoption promotion running on July 30 and 31.

Currently operating at capacity, RSPCA Victoria shelters are caring for 1,063 animals, including 675 cats and kittens.

At the same time last year there were 856 animals in care including 405 cats and kittens, and adoptions were booming with people welcoming a new pet into the family during lockdowns, which meant animals were being adopted faster.

RSPCA Victoria is urgently looking for loving fur-ever homes for as many cats and kittens as possible to make way for incoming animals who also require care and rehoming.

“More cats are coming to us through councils and there has been fewer reclaims of lost and straying cats by their owners, which means our capacity to care for more animals is greatly impacted,” rehabilitation and adoption manager at RSPCA Victoria, Dr Rupert Baker, said.

“If compassionate people adopt a cat from us now, they will be helping that individual animal and helping us care for other animals in need.”

A STUDENT’S ability to apply themselves during their schooling is a large part of how they perform in VCE, but there are many other factors that contribute their desired outcome such as getting into a university course of their choice.

Teens look to the future with uni

WANGARATTA High School year 12 graduates Kayla Fisher and Amy Henderson were among hundreds of local students, and tens of thousands around the state, who received their first round university offers yesterday.

The pair are both interested in humanitarian work and development, and were offered their first choice course at their chosen universities.

Kayla, 17, has been offered a

double degree in Arts and Public Policy with a major in third-world development at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“I was happy with my ATAR score even if I thought I could do better but it’s been a tough year,” Kayla said.

“It was difficult not having feedback from classmates because I didn’t know if I was doing okay or needed to improve.

“But, I got there in the end and am

looking forward to the next step.”

Amy, 18, will be doing occupational therapy at Deakin but hopes to branch into humanitarian work in third world countries.

“I had hoped for a higher ATAR but I didn’t need one, I’m pretty happy with how I went,” Amy said.

“Last year I really missed out on having the balance of sport and social aspects of school which really help me get through the study aspect.

“I’ll jump straight in this year I think because my initial plans to have a gap year and travel aren’t likely now.

“Eventually I want to go into allied health overseas and Kayla and I have always talked about collaborating; she’s more interested in the politics side and I’d do the health side so that could be cool.”

Female field stars lead way to Games

A FORMIDABLE force of female field athletes will spearhead the Australian athletics challenge at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Australia finished the world championships in a best-ever position of sixth on the medals table.

The host nation dominated the 10-day meet with a record 33 medals, including 13 golds, Ethiopia was second with four golds and Australia was among only five other nations to win two events.

And in a sign of the greenand-gold squad’s improved

depth, the 11 top-eight finishes was the best this century at a major championships.

All three of the medals golds to Kelsey-Lee Barber in the javelin and Eleanor Patterson in the high jump, and bronze to pole vaulter Nina Kennedy - came from women in the field.

Three of the other topeights were from the same source.

It’s no secret that women have done most of the heavy lifting for Australian athletics ever since they were allowed to compete in a variety

of events on the international stage in the post-World War II era.

But the power shift from the track to the field is a more recent phenomenon.

“I said coming into Eugene that we’d had a fantastic Tokyo Olympics and we just wanted to repeat that here,” said Athletics Australia high performance boss Andrew Faichney.

“The team overall has done a fantastic job and it’s really been led by our female field event athletes.

“Winning two golds - we haven’t done that since the

London Olympics 10 years ago.”

As is always the case in a Commonwealth Games track and field competition, the standard will vary wildly from event to event.

At the top end is the women’s 100m hurdles, where five of the eight world championships finalists - led by new world record holder Tobi Amusan from Nigeria - should be on the start-line in Birmingham.

Michelle Jenneke had the best performance of her career in Eugene, but will likely

have to again go close to her new PB of 12.66 seconds just to make it through to the final.

Many of the other track events will be strong at the top end, along with the marathons, with Australia’s best long-distance runners prioritising the Commonwealth Games over the world titles.

But the walks fields are very thin, while the throws often lack for depth at Commonwealth level.

“There are going to be some great races and some terrific other events in Birmingham,” said Faichney.

“What we’ve shown is that we’re right in amongst it in most of the events.”

Having the two big meets so close together was always going to prove a challenge on the fitness front and so it has proved.

Hurdler Liz Clay broke her foot in Eugene, while sprinter Riley Day (knee) and 800m runner Joseph Deng (Achilles tendon) have run out of time to prove their fitness.

Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Ash Moloney (knee) is also an unlikely starter in the decathlon.

Seven Manly players to boycott rainbow jersey MANLY have confirmed seven players will miss Thursday night’s crucial NRL clash with the Sydney Roosters because they are unwilling to wear the club’s inclusion jersey.

Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler on Tuesday apologised for the club’s failure to consult the players about the jersey design, which bears rainbow colours usually associated with the LGBTQI community, and the impact the fallout has had on the wider community.

He said the club accepted the

decision of the players which rules them out of a match between two sides on the fringe of the top eight.

“The players will not play on Thursday and we accept their decision,” Hasler said.

“These young men are strong in their beliefs and convictions and we will give them the space and support they require.

“The playing group are solid and understanding of each other’s views.

As a club we will wear the jersey on Thursday night.”

Josh Aloiai, Jason Saab, Christian Tuipulotu, Josh Schuster, Haumole Olakau’atu, Tolu Koula and Toafofoa Sipley are the players ruled out.

Hasler said he supported the use of the jersey, but also had concerns for the welfare of his players.

“They are not wearing the jersey as it conflicts with their cultural and religious beliefs,” Hasler said.

“And I am concerned for their welfare. Their spirituality is part of their welfare.”

Brandon Borrello returns to ALM at Wanderers FRINGE Socceroo Brandon Borrello will look to force his way into Graham Arnold’s World Cup squad with a return to the ALeague Men, after joining Western Sydney.

The ex-Brisbane Roar player has signed with the Wanderers on a two-year deal after spending the past five years in Germany.

Borrello featured for Kaiserslautern, Freiburg, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Dynamo Dresden during his time in Europe, mostly in Germany’s second-tier 2. Bundesliga.

The 27-year-old has

made four appearances for the Socceroos, but hasn’t been part of Arnold’s setup since World Cup qualifiers against Vietnam and Oman in January.

Richmond youngster Noah Cumberland marked just outside of the 50m arc on Friday night but decided to play on with scores level against Fremantle as the siren sounded before he had the chance to kick for goal.

A clock counting up is visible in all stadiums but

players and spectators in the crowd do not know how long is left in a quarter.

Clubs attempt to put up signs and give messages to players on the ground about how much time is remaining but the system is far from perfect.

“I’m not sure why there is anyone that opposes it,” Dangerfield, the AFL Players Association president, told SEN on Tuesday.

“I don’t think it’s an unique thing in our game, where it’s like ‘wow, that’s pretty special to have, you don’t have a clock’.

“Surely it’s something we

can look at going forward.”

Dangerfield believes the game would still be just as exciting if the AFL broke with tradition and allowed a countdown clock to run on scoreboards.

“I don’t buy into the argument that players will look at it and the game will be dull,” he said.

“At the moment, the game is exciting as it’s ever been, and what an incredible round of footy we’ve just witnessed over the weekend.

“The game’s in great shape and I don’t think it would in any way detract from that.”

Boys take centre court for Interschool netball

A MARVELLOUS Friday morning shone on HP Barr Reserve Wangaratta for the Upper Hume Interschool boys netball competitions.

Seven schools were represented from Wangaratta, Myrtleford and Wodonga and competition was run across three divisions, junior (years 7 and 8), intermediate (years 9 and 10) and senior (years 11 and 12).

Wodonga Senior Secondary College took out the senior and intermediate divisions while Wodonga Middle Years College, Huon Campus was the winning

school out of the juniors.

Sports coordinator at Wangaratta High School and convener for the event Sandy Newman said the boys all competed well and fairly and the majority of the games were all tightly contested.

“The kids that were keen to have a crack at netball they were the ones that stood out,” she said.

“They all played with exemplary behaviour and good sportsmanship.”

Ms Newman said Wangaratta High School had great numbers for the netball across the junior and intermediate divisions after getting strong initial interest and putting the boys through tryouts,

which comes from a rise of boys participating in netball across the local junior competitions.

“A lot of them have played in mixed social competitions and if they really love it, that’s good,” she said.

“I know in the juniors a few people said that in Sunday morning competitions in Wangaratta, there’s a couple of boys in each team.

“Some of them are developing right through from primary school.”

Ms Newman said the progression of equality sports has boosted playing numbers of boys in netball.

“I guess it’s the equality now like with the AFL women’s.”

“I just think of Darcy Vescio when they were at Wangaratta High School and played footy in the junior league but they were only allowed to play at a certain age.

“But obviously their love for football got them to Carlton and their still there and still appearing on the ads on tele.”

The Wodonga school teams that won in their divisions will now have the chance to move onto the State finals if they win the Hume regional school competitions, which is to be held on August 4 back in Wangaratta.

Magpies building consistency

WANGARATTA netballers posted a convincing 15-goal victory over Albury at the Albury Sportsground on Saturday.

After a relatively even first quarter that saw the Magpies lead by three, Wangaratta blew the Tigers out of the water with a 14 goal to five second term.

Albury never got themselves back in the game as Wangaratta grabbed a vital 52-37 win away.

The win further consolidated their position in fourth as they’re now two games clear of the fifth placed Albury.

“We’re really happy with our performance especially our consistency over the past two weeks,” Magpies cocoach Hannah Grady said.

“We were able to back up last weekend’s win and bring everything we’ve been talking about into the game.

“Unfortunately Albury were hit by COVID and injuries before the weekend so they had a few players out but they challenged us the whole first half and the score didn’t reflect the contest.”

Grady believes her team has been relishing the fresh

legs of Rachelle Petts coming off the bench over the past few weeks.

“We’ve made a few changes that have been really beneficial,” she said. “’Shel’ Petts has been benching and playing as an

“Liv Richards has also been coming back from Geelong over the past few weeks because of injuries at the club so having them coming

Grady said her team will experiment with a few things before their finals campaign.

“We want to try a few other things before finals,” Grady said.

“There are a few players we want to give an opportunity to and we also might move ‘Shel’ (Petts) into the (shooting) circle and try Amy (Byrne) resting.

“We’ve got a couple of weeks to try a few different things.”

Wangaratta now has the bye this weekend due to the split round.

“The bye will be a good for us injury wise, it’ll give a few of us a chance to rest up,” Grady said.

“But it’s a bit of a hindrance for us because we’re starting to feel good and get some continuity in so another week off is a bit annoying in that sense.”

Meanwhile, Wangaratta Rovers fell to Myrtleford by 11 goals.

After trailing by just two at half-time the Saints put the Hawks to the sword in the final half to come away convincing winners.

Kelsie Wilson was excellent for the Hawks, while Tina Way was Myrtleford’s best.

Wangaratta Rovers also have a bye this weekend.

Benalla All Blacks gunning for top two finish

BENALLA All Blacks’ A grade netball squad gave a preview of what they’re capable of in a finals atmosphere on Saturday at the Milawa Recreation Reserve, bumping off the secondplaced Demons 48-42.

The Panthers were all over it through the first quarter, sprinting out to a six goal lead by quarter time before extending the margin by a goal by half-time.

The home side found their feet through the third term, producing a 14-goal quarter to come within three goals of taking the lead heading into the final period of play.

The two sides went goal for goal through the fourth quarter, but Benalla’s intensity held them in good stead, with the Panthers home by six goals.

Coach Samantha Bochtler said the victory showed just how strong her side is and, with finals just around the

“We definitely wanted to come into that game hungry for that win against them after playing them just four weeks prior and going down to them by 14 - we wanted to come out and prove we are better than what we were when we first played them,” she said.

“That’s what my main goal was, my little pep talk before

the game and before we got on the court was literally just like that - let’s bring that intensity, go as hard as we can, and really try to knock them out of the park.

“I think that’s what we felt when we played Greta, we weren’t expecting them to come out that hard and that fast that quickly, so that’s what I wanted the girls to bring and show Milawa in that first quarter.

PHOTOS: Garry Jones “We did just that, then obviously we had to maintain it and I think it really does held when you have such a great, strong first quarter, the rest it about maintaining it, and we did just that.”

The return of Marnie Thorne to the defensive end held Benalla in good stead, while Alara Jones’ 35 goals, shooting at 74 per cent accuracy, was damaging on the scoreboard.

“Alara’s accuracy was right up there this weekend which always helps - she even said herself, she learned from when we last came up against Milawa how the defenders work, and she really made an effort to practice her shots and stepping back if she needed to,” Bochtler said.

“Having that strong defence with Marnie Thorne coming back on was good too, she’s just really great

with keeping that talk up in the defence and helping.”

The Panthers sit at fourth on the ladder with three rounds remaining, but Bochtler is confident her side can crack into the top two.

“That was my main goal and a drive for the girls to pump them up too - I said if we win against Milawa, if we beat them and we win the rest of our games, and if Greta beat Milawa then we’re second place going into those finals,” she said.

“That’s where I want to finish, and I know the girls would love to finish in that second spot and get that second chance when it comes to finals.

“I definitely believe we can do it, the rest of the girls believe in themselves and as a team that we can do it.”

In other round 17 netball matches, Tarrawingee snared a nine goal win over Bonnie Doon, North Wangaratta took a narrow victory over Moyhu 44-42, Goorambat held off a challenge by Whorouly by six goals, and Greta picked up a healthy percentage boost with a 63-4 win over King Valley.

WANGARATTA City missed their chance of closing the gap on league leaders Albury United on Sunday at Jelbart Park.

United were out to a 2-0 lead by the 28th minute thanks to a free kick that found the back of the net from Ramesh Basnet (10th) and a goal from superstar Melkie Woldemichael which put the Devils on the back foot from the get go.

“It was disappointing,” Wangaratta City coach Daniel Vasilevski said.

“They just played better than us, they started well and we were basically nonexistent in the first half.

“The second half was a bit better but we were just chasing, we were on the back foot from the get go so it was a pretty tough game.”

The Devils were able to create some chances in the second half but Greens’ keeper Jay Barker was a brick wall.

“Their keeper was great but ours (Tommy McCarron) was as well,” Vasilevski said.

“We had a couple of chances in the second half but we weren’t clinical or

quick enough in front of goals.”

The Devils were missing star midfielder Liam Nash who was absent with a quad injury which didn’t help their cause at all.

Vasilevski found it hard to take positives away from the loss.

“We need to start well and set the pace but from the kickoff they did that,” he said.

“I feel like we need to be more aggressive in the midfield as well, we did both of those things well against Cobram and that was a different result.

“To be honest it’s hard to take any positives away, it was an unexpected performance, I was confident we’d be able to get a result.”

Wangaratta was left with a sense of what could have been.

“If we won we’d be on 43 points, equal with United but now we’re more than a game behind,” Vasilevski said.

“We’d love to finish first and win the league but that’s going to be difficult now so I think we just need to build towards finals glory.”

Wangaratta now faces Wodonga Diamonds.

Bruised and battered Lady Devils proud of effort

PRACTICALLY everything that could go wrong in Wangaratta’s division one women’s match with Albury United did go wrong, but the Lady Devils hold their heads high despite the 0-5 scoreline.

Even before the senior squad stepped out onto the pitch, disaster struck, with players in the under 17 girls and division two women’s sides going down with injuries.

With virtually no bench to speak of, the senior women fought valiantly against the ladder leaders, stifling the Greens’ chances to go into half-time only trailing 0-2.

Coach Lockie Campbell said the maturity and drive shown by the squad was something everyone should be proud of.

“Being 2-0 down, we were on a positive, we were holding our own,” he said.

“We were off to a rocky start pretty early in the morning with a couple of pull-outs from sickness, then it just kept going throughout the day - we had a couple of injuries in the under 17 girls, and in the div two women there were a few more injuries, and straight into our game was another injury.

“Straight away we were down to no one on the bench, some of

“United are a great team, they’re strong, they’re solid, they know what they’re doing, they’ve played together for a long time and they’re well drilled, but the girls held their own.

“They knew it would be a tough match but they handled it, they put United under pressure and you could see they were starting to get frustrated.

“I wouldn’t say it was a terrible match - we didn’t get the win but every time we’ve played United we’ve improved and to do what

we did with no bench for the majority of the game was just incredible.”

Lady Devils’ superstar midfielder Beth Cope will be in doubt for the next few matches, after going down with a serious ankle injury in the first half.

Ruby Snowdon (hamstring)

and Georgia Mahoney (hyperextended knee) will also be likely to sit out a match or two.

“It could’ve gone one of two ways - with Beth going down and out, she’s such a great leader of the team and everyone looks up to her so I was a bit worried a few heads would drop seeing she’s not out there,” Campbell said.

“It actually caused a few of the girls to step up and be like ‘if Beth can do it, why can’t we?”, it was great to see them all turnaround from it.

“Anika Miller Cooper really stood up on Sunday - she plays in the midfield alongside Beth and she just took on that role of getting up and about, getting everyone going, just bringing a lot of energy and rhythm into the game.

“All the young girls like Ella Antonello and Reese (Chuck), they both stepped up on the wing, they had a hard day of coming back and defending and if we do get a chance to go forward they need to put in the hard effort of getting forward.

“They were running up and down the line all day, just doing what they needed to which was perfect.”

The Lady Devils maintained their strong ladder position in the division two competition following their 1-1 draw over United.

“He’s a BOBS (Breeder Owner Bonus Scheme) eligible horse so he’s been able to claim bonus prizemoney.

“He’s lightly raced, won over $100,000 in prizemoney and just turned four so we’re looking forward to seeing what he can continue to do.”

Dale has now notched up 36 winners for the year, well passed his tally of 26 last season.

“It’s great, it’s our best season yet,” he said.

After trailing by two goals to the Chargers at three quarter time, the Bushrangers fought back in the final term but it ultimately wasn’t enough as they went down 9.11 (65) to 11.4 (70).

The game was destined to be a thriller with both team’s sitting on six wins prior to the clash but Oakleigh now move a game clear of the Bushies in sixth.

Wangaratta Rovers athletic tall Toby Murray (pictured) impressed after he was moved into the ruck, while North Albury’s Foster Gardiner was arguably Murray Bushrangers’ best.

For the Chargers it was Ingo Dammersmith who did the damage, booting three majors in a solid display.

The end of round 13 marks just three games left for the NAB League season before finals kicks off after the final round wraps up on August 21.

Effort the focus for female Hawks WANGARATTA Rovers’ female footballers hosted Lavington at the WJ Findlay Oval on Sunday, in the penultimate round of the home and away season.

In the open women’s clash, the first quarter was a tough affair, Ally Ballard leading by example and taking some strong marks early, and Jacinta Findlay and Jess Byrne repelling the ball.

Emma Gosbell racked up possessions, Leanne Branson was lively on the wing, and Dakota McAliece led hard and contributed with second and third efforts; the quarter time score was 3.2 (20) to 0.

The second term saw lots of effort and some great passages of play where the girls hit targets.

Rovers controlled the play in the middle and across half-back a lot of the time, but just couldn’t get it to their forwards to convert.

Amy Collins was brilliant in the ruck and across half

forward, and continually created contests but trailed by 43 points at half-time.

Rovers lifted the intensity in the second half, Emma Gosbell was brilliant through the middle, Amy Hopkins took a great mark from an Amy Collins kick, then went back on a tight angle and slotted the goal, while Chloe Kungl played strongly across the half forward line and Helen Collins’ effort was fantastic.

Kat Ginnivan played well in the final term, which was stopped midway for 10 minutes, after a tackle resulted in a nasty cut to Dakota McAliece’s leg.

Deb Plattfuss took a great mark inside 50, kicked to a leading Amy Hopkins, and after a ruck infringement got the ball back and slotted it through the sticks to kick Rovers’ second goal.

Rovers are looking forward to finals in a couple of weeks.

Final score: Lavington

Panthers 13.5 (83) defeated Wangaratta Rovers 2.2 (14).

The under 17s took on the ladder-leading Panthers with intensity from the first term.

Tackling from the back six was superb, and the runand-carry from Mila Armstrong, Sophie Boyle and Asha Foubister was sensational.

By quarter time Rovers had managed to keep Lavington to just three scoring shots.

In the second quarter the backline continued to apply pressure, and Bree Keys started to control the centre.

Rovers’ overlap running was excellent and four scoring shots to one in the second term was a great result.

The third quarter was probably the Hawks’ best,

with a recent focus on fitness reaping benefits.

Two of the youngest players, Mila Armstrong at half back and Mak Clark in ruck, who are both still only 14, were superb.

Mia Johnston also had a terrific quarter in the midfield and was the instigator of a great passage of play resulting in a goal.

She sent a terrific switch kick to Lili Fan, whoput the ball deep into the goal square for Shyane Ryder to toe-poke it through.

Rovers kept the ball in their 50 for a good part of the last quarter and were unlucky not to get another two goals, with opportunities to Bree Keys and Trinny Preer just going the wrong side of the post.

Lavington scored a couple of goals late, but the final score was not a reflection of the tight game.

Final score: Lavington Panthers 10.5 (65) defeated Wangaratta Rovers 1.3 (9).

Awards: Mak Clark, Mila Armstrong, Asha Foubister, Mia Johnston.

Lavington is also atop the ladder in under 14s, and the Hawks were led into battle against the Panthers by Lucy Kiely, who played well at full-back and centre-halfback.

The first term saw Molly Thomas, Lily Gibb and Sophia Pasquali provided great run around the ground and laying excellent tackles.

Rovers welcomed back Ella Pund, and she excelled in defence all game, and was supported by Trinity Hassgall, Hannah Carroll and Hazel Kelly, as the Hawks kept Lavington scoreless.

The second quarter was another close contest, with Chloe Mizzi working hard to tackle, Charlotte Howell working well on the half-forward line, and Eliza Harding using her strength and hardrunning to win the footy out of congestion.

Lara Maples won most of the ruck taps, and took some great overhead marks, and Lavington managed only one goal for the term.

After half-time, Harper McGrath tackled well, made excellent use of space and propelled the ball forward several times, while Molly Thomas’s tackling pressure and running resulted in a goal.

She was well supported in the forward line by some great leading and one-onecontests from Zierra Melbourne, Maddy Drage and Lilias Coonan.

Rovers kept the Panthers scoreless again in the third term.

The last quarter saw some fatigue set in, with Lavington managing two quick goals to seal the win, but the smiles and joy from the Rovers girls at the end of the game told the real story, in their best game of the season.

Marwari ($6) ran just his second start for the Dale stable to win his maiden in his seventh run of his career.

“He’s a horse we just acquired but we thought he would be well placed at Corowa,” Dale said.

“His first up run (finished

third at Albury) was good, we brought him back in trip and although he didn’t draw a good barrier we thought the speed would cross him which made the difference.

“Chairman’s Choice has been a model of consistency this prep and Shiny Rock has been similar but he just tries hard.”
