unemployment rate sits at a 50-year historically low 3.5 per cent, it doesn’t mean there aren’t any jobs out there for people locally.

Company managing director George Prothero said the building industry is facing

a “massive downturn” in the next six months but he still has jobs available for people right for the job.

“The housing market is definitely slowing so the need for more employees is not as critical as it was; however we still have scope to employ 1215 people if they are suitable for the work.

“The business has found that numerous people, who have submitted their resumes,

come in, try out and they don’t want to work.”

In light of not being able to attract a suitable workforce the business secured a building permit for a major $700,000 extension which will house state of the art equipment worth more than $2m.

He said the skeleton of the building is erected and the aim is for machines to be fully operational in the

next few weeks.

“The equipment does the sawing and stacking of timber so it takes out a lot of the manual labour in areas we were struggling to find people to do,” he said.

“We have to continue doing that in other areas of the operation as well.”

The downturn is coming for the building industry with the lofty heights propped up by the HomeBuilders grants

in 2020-21 long over, and Mr Prothero said the worst in the last 10 years is forecast off the back of inflation and rising interest rates.

The Reserve Bank’s cash rate is expected to peak at 4.1 per cent in the next few months and stay there for 18 months, thwarting the dreams of many people looking to buy their first home, or at least the home they aspired to buy.

District 23 brigades assist Flowerdale fire response

By STEVE KELLY A CFA strike team of ultra light tankers and slipon units from Benalla and Mansfield brigades have been helping out on the fire front in Flowerdale.

District 23 acting assistant chief fire officer Steve Contessa said the area has steep terrain and difficult access which is not accessible to vehicles.

“A lot of the work is being done by people on foot and most of that work is dedicated by the Forest Fire Management crews who are creating hand trails and mineral earth breaks so when the fire burns out to it, there’s not much else for it to go on to,” he said.

“It’s a defensive strategy where we can’t get people in to extinguish a fire.”

The Flowerdale fire ignited last Tuesday and has burnt about 1000 hectares of land.

New appointments complete executive line-up TWO new appointments to Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) complete the line-up of the health service’s executive team for 2023.

Scott Swanwick has commenced as executive director - quality, safety and patient experience, bringing 12 years of senior management experience in the public and private health sectors to the organisation.

Andrew Nitschke joins the organisation as executive director - finance and performance after six and a half years in a similar role at Benalla Health and more than 20 years of senior management experience in public health and aged care.

They join an existing team of three executive directors - Kim Bennetts leading People and Culture, Susanty Tay in Medical Services and Bernadette Hammond leading clinical operations/chief nursing and midwifery officer to complete the executive team.

NHW chief executive officer Libby Fifis said the executive had quickly focused on their roles and their experience in regional health settings was a great asset to Wangaratta’s health service.

“Our entire executive team bring with them some great experience, but also share our passion for quality regional

“I’ve lived and worked in regional areas previously, but this is my first appointment in the Northeast and I’ve enjoyed getting to know the town and surrounds as well as the team that I will be working with,” he said.

“Our goal is to further develop and embed patient quality, safety and positive experience into everything we do.”

pressing priority would be assisting the organisation to establish a sustainable financial footing for the future.

“I’m excited to make the transition from a local health service to a larger, sub-regional setting that contributes to a broader community,” he said.

By STEVE KELLY PRO-DUCK hunting politicians have labelled the Victorian Government’s decision to only have a five-week season this year as “pitiful”.

The season will start on April 26 and end on May 30 and under the rules hunters will have to abide by a four bird bag limit and no shots to be fired before 8am each day.

The government is also making moves to investigate native bird hunting in Victoria with public hearings to be held across the state.

Outdoor Recreation Minister Sonya Kilkenny on Friday afternoon said given the deeply held views on duck shooting the government will move to establish a Legislative Council Select Committee to examine recreational native bird hunting in Victoria.

The committee will have wide-ranging terms of reference, including the operation of the annual recreational native bird hunting seasons, arrangements in other Australian jurisdictions, their environmental sustainability and impact on amenity, and their social and economic impact.

It will hold public hearings to hear from hunting associations, animal welfare groups, and regional communities.

The motion to establish the committee will be moved by the government in the Legislative Council during the next sitting week, and subject to its passage, a final report will be due to be tabled by August 31, 2023.

SEASON SHORTENED: The Victorian duck hunting season will last for five weeks and a select committee will investigate the sport’s future.

“Duck hunters are becoming the poster child of Labor’s green crusade,” Ms Kealy said.

“The Andrews Labor Government is mounting pressure on hunters that are doing the right thing, hitting them with restricted bag limits and shorter seasons.”

The Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party chairman Ben Collyer said “these seasonal arrangements is the Labor party trying to play it both ways but instead insults 26,000 law abiding

and licensed hunters with pitiful claims of poor behaviour and habitat loss”.

“Conditions have never been better, ducks are abundant, reports of breeding pairs on their 3rd or 4th clutch and hunter initiated breeding programs have never been more successful.

“For the interim harvest model to be modified flies in the face of the AHM undertaking and proves that this this year’s arrangements are purely political in nature.”

RSPCA Victoria is “dismayed” at the decision to hold a season this year which will cause “injury, pain and suffering to thousands

of native ducks” and will further impact declining waterbird populations.

“Regardless of the reduced season length, based on a 35day hunting season about 87,000 birds will be killed during the 2023 Victorian duck hunting season and up to 35,000 wounded and left to die,” RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker said.

“While we are pleased to hear of a review and the implementation of a Legislative Council Select Committee to examine hunting arrangements of native birds, we are deeply disappointed in the decision to proceed with the 2023 season and urge the government to reconsider.”

MP Haines submits her Indi budget priorities list FEDERAL MP for Indi, Helen Haines, has released her Indi budget submission ahead of the 2022-23 federal budget, highlighting housing and community infrastructure projects as key needs for the Rural City of Wangaratta.

A total of $23 million of proposed direct government funding for the rural city has been listed in the budget submission, spread across six projects.

Among Dr Haines’ budget priorities is $2 million of funding to help the Rural City of Wangaratta redevelop the Wangaratta Ovens College site into a social housing lot.

Dr Haines said in her budget submission there are almost 900 social housing applicants in the local area currently with very few social housing options available.

“The Federal Government says it is committed to addressing housing shortages and in Indi we have identified practical ways to help us create more housing that should be funded to promote further investment from other sources,” she said.

“We also need a Regional Housing Infrastructure Fund, which would invest in enabling infrastructure like sewerage, drainage and roads to accelerate the development of new housing across regional Australia.

“Rural and regional councils want to open up more housing but we need to make sure funding is directed to the regions and addressing the barriers we face, which are different to those in the major cities.”

The site has been explored for development of social housing since last year and will accumulate total costs of $20 million to go ahead with the build.

Other budget priorities listed in

the Indi budget submissions for the Rural City of Wangaratta include upgrades for the Organics Processing Plant, the Wangaratta-Whitfield Road and funding for the Prosecco Road tourism project.

Dr Haines met with mayors from across Indi in Wangaratta on Friday morning to discuss the priorities from across Indi, including housing issues and funding for roads and telecommunications.

“It was a pleasure to hold a roundtable meeting with representatives from the nine LGAs that make up the electorate of Indi,” she said.

“It is an opportunity to discuss our common interest, shared experiences and also learn from each other.

“It means we ensure the way we work with the government is most effective and we have the most impact.”

Ryley Street escape accused remanded A WANGARATTA teenager who allegedly led a daring escape from police while driving 100kph down the wrong side of Ryley Street will return to court next month.

The 19-year-old Gooramadda man was bailed in the aftermath of the January 22 incident, however, returned to Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court last week in police custody after being arrested on another police matter.

The court previously heard during a represented bail hearing that the accused had overtaken police near Murphy Street around 1.20am, before swerving onto the right hand side of the road and accelerating to an estimated 100kph.

He was said to have dodged police near Rattray Avenue, before crashing into large rocks as he attempted to turn onto Cribbes Road at speed.

The accused was said to have fled the scene on foot.

A tomahawk axe, a knife, and identifying documents belonging to the accused were allegedly found following a search of the vehicle.

On Monday, the court heard the accused’s subsequent arrest while on bail would necessitate an adjournment of charges.

He was remanded in custody to return to court on March 27.

Festival of pride to light up gardens

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN WANGARATTA will host its first Pride Fair Day on Friday, March 10 at the King George Gardens for what’s anticipated to be a huge afternoon of festivities.

Pride Fair Day will be celebrating the diversity of LGBTQIA+ people and allies within the region and an opportunity for people to create connections with each other and raise awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The fair day will go from 4pm-7pm and will include family-friendly games, stalls from local businesses and community groups, live music, drag performances, face painting, food trucks, showbags and free activities for kids.

LGBTQIA+ in the North East (LINE) president Allison Winters said the team at LINE Wangaratta are ready to show the region the pride and strength of LGBTQIA+ people and families.

“Wangaratta has never had anything like this before... it’s a very exciting time for LGBTQIA+ people, families, and allies in our region,” they said.

“All LGBTQIA+ people should be able to engage fully and meaningfully in community life, and the Pride Fair Day aims to embrace and celebrate the diversity in our region.

“We know LGBTQIA+ peo-

ple in regional Victoria experience more disadvantage compared to people living in metro Melbourne; they are less likely to be aware of allies, less likely to know a safe place to go.

Originally LINE had planned to have a smaller scale pride family picnic event at the gardens, but due to State Government funding and the support of more than 30 local businesses and organisations signing up as stallholders, the event grew to become a festival.

LINE recently had two pride banners stolen from the Rowan Street underpass and Merriwa Park, which Allison said was disappointing to see, but emphasises the need to facilitate events such as the Pride Fair Day. “Each of us who are involved in the organisation have experienced some form of discrimination or violence in the community,” they said.

“It hasn’t deterred us at all; in fact it’s going to make us try harder... things need to change and we’re committed to making that change.

Campgrounds re-opening after regional flood damage clean up

PARKS and campsites across the region impacted by flood damages late last year have started to re-open to the public.

Several parks and reserves across the Ovens and Murray rivers have been closed over the summer, with some still suffering from flood damage.

Northern Hume area chief ranger Jess Reid said over the last month Parks Victoria have progressively reopened sites in and around the Wangaratta area.

“Our staff has been busy undertaking assessments of those areas to ensure they’re safe for people to return and what we’re see-

ing is as those parks reopen; people are returning to those areas and camping and enjoy those areas again now they have re-opened,” she said.

In order to maintain the cleanliness of re-opened sites, Ms Reid said it is best to ensure campers continue to follow rules and requirements of being in the parks and campgrounds.

“Water obviously makes some of the areas muddier and a bit more saturated so we want people to keep to the roads and tracks when they can,” she said.

“Being mindful of where they’re camping, leaving a light footprint so they’re making sure they’re picking up and taking rubbish with them once they have finished up.

“It’s also about respecting the environment, the flora

year term comes to an end.

Ms Reid said Parks Victoria is looking for interested new members of the community to join the group for the next two or three year term.

“Parks Victoria is really keen to hear from the community about how they feel about the park, what they would like to see occurring in the park; so we can work together with the community and stakeholders on continuing to manage the park to the best practice standard, as we’ve seen through the greenlist accreditation,” she said.

“We’re looking for members who have skills and an interest in conservation, natural resources, land management aspects such as tourism, recreation and education.”

Ms Reid said the current

advisory group had focused on many different aspects of park management and have made significant contributions to the park conservation.

“A really great thing that has come from the advisory group has been the establishment of the Friends of the Warby-Ovens National Park who have seen that as an opportunity,” she said.

“They’ve been established now for three months and I think it’s a really great example of the community coming together through this advisory group and bringing an idea to fruition.”

Duck hunting sport faces tough times FOR what has been an age old pasttime, shooting has historically been a popular sport in the North East.

Families across the Wangaratta district used to make a weekend out of the opening of duck hunting season and head to the waterways in the area to camp over the weekend.

With the decommissioning of Lake Mokoan and the closure of the Lower Ovens to duck shooting, hunters now have to travel to take part in the practice.

Now with the season being shortened to five weeks and a bag limit of four ducks introduced, shooters are left bewildered that they’re not getting a fair go.

Some pro-duck shooting politicians say duck hunting tourism brings in millions of dollars to tourist economies across the state and without it this money will be lost.

Every duck season there are arguments about whether or not hunters should be allowed to take part in the practice.

With the a select committee destined to be established to investigate the practice and its varying degrees of impact on duck populations, it opens up dialogue for stakeholders to give their feedback on the matter.

Favourable evidence in Kelly trial refused JOHN Evans (1843-1934) I recently had the privilege of interviewing David Evans, who was a state president of the National Party in 19751976 and member of the Legislative Council for the North-Eastern Province of Victoria from 1976 to 1996.

Mr Evans is the grandson of John Evans who was a squatter from Whitefield Station comprising of some 59,520 acres near Moyhu and employed Ned Kelly in 1874.

After the holding up the police station at Jerilderie, the Kelly Gang discovered that the horses had the Evans’ brand on them.

Ned Kelly, who felt that Evans was a decent squatter, was determined to return the horses to him.

This was done but Evans had actually sold them to the police, and he had returned them to Jerilderie.

Apparently at the trial of Ned Kelly, which took place at the Central Criminal Court in Melbourne on 28-29 October 1880, Ned Kelly’s legal team wanted to call John Evans to give character reference on behalf of Ned Kelly.

However, Sir Redmond Barry the judge, refused to allow John Evans to give such evidence as it no doubt would have been favourable to Ned Kelly’s cause.

Bank governor must shoulder some blame THE role of the Reserve Bank is to try and keep the economy ticking along, trying not to allow our economy to get out of control.

The only weapon they have is to adjust interest rates.

When the current Reserve Bank Governor made the statement that interest rates will remain low until 2024 this was totally irresponsible and he should have been stood down then.

How he came to that decision is of concern as the storm clouds for the world economy were gathering at that time.

The government of the day has a responsibility as well in maintaining the economy and have to take some responsibility in interest rates rises.

They also have to make unpleasant decisions but they need to communicate these decisions and not blame others.

A legacy of care Margaret g Bennett honoured for her dedication to NHW

By RYAN MALCOLM A FORMER Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) chief executive officer has been recognised for her decade of commitment to the local community by being granted a life governorship at the health service.

Margaret Bennett’s 10-year tenure at the helm of the hospital came to a close in early 2020, after accepting a role as CEO of Southern NSW Health.

She toured the facility earlier this month which she had worked so hard to expand, and had played a key role in securing the funds for, before being bestowed the life governorship award by the hospital’s board of directors for her exceptional service to the local community.

In presenting the award, board chair Alison Maclean said the recognition ackowledged Ms Bennett’s willingness to give beyond the call of duty while in the role.

“Margaret was a highly respected leader and she led our health service through major change and evolution that established our reputation in the region,” she said.

“Margaret’s engaging nature was appreciated by staff - she took the time to get to know them, was regularly seen around the wards, and her leadership style embedded a very positive and caring culture.

“Margaret enjoyed a tour of our redevelopment this afternoon, something she was instrumental in securing the vital funds that made the projects possible - this legacy will impact our service delivery for many years to come.

TOKEN OF GRATITUDE: Former Northeast Health Wangaratta chief executive officer Margaret Bennett was last week presented with a life governorship at the hospital.

“Margaret departed our health service for a new challenge with Southern NSW Local Health District - she continues to make her mark and was recently honoured with a Medal of the Order of Australia in the general division for her service to medical administration.”

Ms Bennett said the chance to tour the hospital three years after her departure had been a special opportunity.

“It’s a place I absolutely love and it’s a place I always want to stay very connected and close to,” she said.

“It was incredible today to go and have a look at the

finished redevelopment that was just on foot when I left here three years ago, and what an amazing job that is, and how exciting that is in terms of the forward direction of NHW. “I guess it is that great love of this place and community that means the life governorship is doubled in what it means to me - Northeast Health is a really, really special place.

“I’ve had the privilege of working in many hospitals and health services around Australia and elsewhere, so I know what special is when I see it - the DNA of North-

“You don’t have to be (at the hospital) for 40 or 50 years to be recognised, you can be wonderful if you’re there for four years, but the reality is Northeast Health has more than its share of people that have given their whole life to this community with such dedication and expertise.

“There is nothing bigger that you can say to staff in terms of how we are going than ‘would you be happy for your most precious person to be cared for here?’ and I think that will always be the test of how you’re going.”

Water and sewer infrastructure more resilient to a changing climate COMMUNITY water and sewer systems across North East Victoria are now more resilient to the growing impacts of climate change and natural disasters.

North East Water has increased the options of using off-grid power supplies at sites during or after times of bushfire, drought, flood, heatwaves and storms thanks to an $800,000 Victorian Government grant.

John Day, general manager environment, systems and operations, said ‘behind the meter’ power systems will help keep water and sewer infrastructure operating in emergency situations.

“The project has seen the installation of several fixed generators, solar and battery systems, and the purchase of a fleet of mobile generators”, he said.

“It’s also allowed us to upgrade our operating systems, so they work smarter and more efficiently when alternate power is being used.

“Townships that benefit the most include Myrtleford, Beechworth, Benalla, Dartmouth, Tallangatta and Walwa, although the fleet of mobile generators can be used anywhere in the state if needed.

“The new fixed generator in Benalla has already been used for 24 hours during a recent storm, while our mobile generators were dispatched to help Goulburn Valley Water and

Mr Day said the project would help protect communities as impact of climate change take hold.

“We are committed to climate change mitigation, and with operating efficiencies similar those included in this project, our costs are lower which in turn keeps bills affordable for customers.”

Funding for this project was provided from the Victorian Government Repair and Replacement of Essential Water Infrastructure Program as well as $300,000 from North East Water’s capital expenditure program

Jonathon Kaiser, Vanda Bisignano and John Reygers were up until 4.30am on Sunday morning, before backing up for the halfmarathon and 10km events in yesterday’s fun run.

Vanda was perhaps the fittest of the trio.

She actually trained for the event and was happy with her effort in the 10km run.

Jonathon and John took a different approach though, telling the Wangaratta Chronicle they hardly

It sounds pretty hard to believe, and there are a few question marks over the truthfulness of their story, but Jonathon said he and John have “terrible fitness” and simply ran around the block a couple of times in preparation for the 21.1km run.

“We were out last night,” he said.

“We smoke and we drink, we’re not good examples.”

The two completed the half marathon in a very respectable two hours, 15 minutes and were feeling “about 50 per cent” after the run.

“I’m just scared of lifting my legs,” Jonathan said.

A SPECIAL performance by Alyce Platt will open the 2023 concert series at the Benalla Art Gallery on March 11.

An actress who many would be familiar with for her starring role on Sons and Daughters, Platt is also a singersongwriter and guitarist who has achieved critical acclaim for her original indie-pop songs.

In recent years, Alyce began recording a low-fi, quirky, intimate collection of re-imagined songs, which connected with what many people were experiencing during COVID lockdowns.

AFTER several weeks with a series of weak anticyclones, the pattern changed on Sunday, February 19 .

An intense anticyclone formed west of Tasmania with the central pressure very high at 1035mbs, putting most of the nation under an easterly airstream and increasing daily maximum temperatures.

The barometer reached 1029mbs in Melbourne on the morning of February 21.

Other high barometer readings for Melbourne in late February did occur in 1872, 1921, 1941, 1949, 1960, and 1992.

There was a lengthy warm to hot spell in our region after most of these cases which lasted to well into March.

However, the general dryness of recent weeks over most of the nation remains unchanged except for above average falls across the Gulf region and 318mm at Townsville.

Roma has had no rain since the beginning of February and the total summer rainfall at 39.2mm is the second lowest in 153 years of records.

Other very dry summers at Roma include 36.4mm in 2018-19, 78mm in 1964-65 and 68.4mm in 191112.

Roma to date is experiencing one of the warmest months of February on record, with the mean maximum temperature at 36.6 degrees Celsius being almost four degrees above normal.

Other high readings for February include 1912, 1916, 1925, 1926, 1932 and 1969.

This may impact upon our region by providing close to average rainfalls for the rest of this year.

Perth has continued to record no rain for almost 50 days.

The summer total to date is only 1.4mm, the third driest in 148 years behind 0.8mm in 1974-75 and 0.2mm in 2009-10.

Other very dry summers were in 1963-64, 1986-87, 2013-14 and 1997-98.

These past episodes of very dry summers in Perth will lead up to above average rainfalls in NE Victoria from May right up to November or December this year, the winter being more milder than winter last year.

I have spent the last week in Cairns where 277mm has fallen to date this month following above average falls in December and January.

Dew points reached 25.6C just before a deluge of 42mm.

It was at a time when several domestic cats fell victim to pythons.

One cat owner reported that his pet had disappeared and they later found a python with a big bulge in its belly.

Melbourne’s late season burst of 40.5C on Friday, February 17 was unusually so late in summer.

Only nine others which happened in 1886, 1914, 1919, 1920, 1922, 19400, 1977, 1980 and 1995.

The month of April after almost all of those past cases was notably warmer than normal.

It’s something to look forward to this April around Easter perhaps.

Authors inspire young readers Flood report WRITERS including Morris Gleitzman, Kirli Saunders and Adrian Beck will feature in upcoming online sessions available to local schools through the Virtual Author Program in 2023.

The State Governmentbacked program is in its seventh year, and involves well-known writers and illustrators holding online sessions where they read and talk to students across Victoria about their work and the importance of reading.

Last Tuesday, Matt Cosgove, author and illustrator of the much-loved ‘Macca the Alpaca’ series, kicked off the 10-part program, which is expected to be attended by students from around 140 primary and secondary schools - many of them in rural and regional areas.

Victorian Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins said: “Supporting children to read is one of the most powerful things you can do to encourage a love of learning - developing skills that will set them up for life.

“The Virtual Author Program ensures our students can meet the people behind some of their favourite books - no matter where they go to school.”

COMMUNITIES in Victoria will have their voices heard through a state-wide inquiry into Victoria’s preparedness and response to flooding events.

The Liberals and Nationals passed a motion in the Legislative Council requiring the Environment and Planning Committee to report on the preparedness and response to the October 2022 Victorian floods.

Shadow Minister for Water, Tim McCurdy, said communities deserve answers from the State Government and an inquiry will give impacted communities the opportunity to be heard.

He said the government’s original flood inquiry was nothing more than a positive PR exercise that didn’t deliver answers for Victorians.

“When the terms of reference of the government’s own review fail Victorians, the Liberals and Nationals are left to take up the slack,” Mr McCurdy said.

“This inquiry will shine a light on the shortcomings of Victoria’s current preparedness for

devastating floods, as well as a review into the October 2022 floods.

“Victorians want answers, and the Liberals and Nationals are ensuring they will have their voices heard and questions answered.”

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Georgie Crozier, said those impacted by the devastating floods deserved an independent inquiry.

“I am pleased the Liberals and Nationals’ motion for a parliamentary inquiry into the state’s preparedness for the recent devastating floods has passed,” Ms Crozier said.

“Thousands of Victorians have been impacted by this natural disaster.

“This independent inquiry will go a long way in determining whether we could be better prepared to respond to similar events in the future.”

The opposition and the Greens introduced separate motions earlier this month for their own flood reviews but further negotiations led to the combined bill gaining support from the majority of crossbenchers as well to pass in the Upper House.

Calling out for all Young Farmers

FROM humble beginnings in the 1950s the Young Farmers Club movement came to Yarrawonga and for several decades enjoyed an important social and community connection.

That connection will be once again formed when all former members of the Yarrawonga Club or any other Victorian Young Farmers Club gather on the lawns of the Yarrawonga Yacht Club on Sunday, March 19, 2023.

There is no invitation list, just word of mouth contact.

The function will commence at 10.30am when people can gather for fellowship and by noon ready for lunch at 12.30pm. It will be a BYO function completely, including your own food, seating, and facilities to take your own litter home.

From the very early 1900s the Young Farmers Club Movement in Victoria had a long, yet interesting, transition from small towns having calf clubs through to a highly regarded organisation right across rural Victoria.

Several calf clubs had been established, some very successfully, but all having their activities limited to cattle project work and very little, if any, direct connection between the project and the subjects of the school curriculum.

Department of Agriculture, along with community bodies, Rotary Clubs and Agricultural Societies, were instrumental in setting out the criteria on which clubs were formed. Through the early 1930s it seems that junior members were to be under 18-years-of-age and senior members over 18-years-of-age.

By January 31, 1935 there were 110 schools in Victoria affiliated with the Victorian Young Farmers Club Association and

by November 1941 some 202 school clubs had paid their affiliation fess for the coming year.

In 1947 a set of aims and objectives were written and adopted by the Victorian Young Farmers Club Association, and with very few amendments, these formed the foundation on which the organisation flourished with some 75 clubs being established from 1950 to the end of 1956. These guidelines included membership being restricted to people aged from 15 years to 25 years, at which age members could no longer participate.

The policy of no alcohol

at an official Young Farmers function was the trademark of the organisation and set a great example for all members of the farming community.

In 1955 a small group of parents of young people in the Yarrawonga district met to consider starting a club in Yarrawonga. These people included Jim McDonald, Jim Thomas, Orm Wallace, Jim Pigdon and Frank Keenan. This inaugural meeting was held in an office of a bank on the southwest corner of Belmore and Orr streets in Yarrawonga.

The Yarrawonga Young Farmers Club was officially formed on August 18, 1955, with 50 members and, after formation, the club held monthly meetings in the table tennis

pavilion at the showgrounds before settling on the CWA Hall in Hovel Street as the home base for the majority of its existence.

The primary objective for Young Farmer Clubs was to develop and promote socialculture-agriculture activities and skills among young people in the rural areas of Victoria.

The State of Victoria comprised five areas of clubs, covering 18 districts and each district had several clubs.

District Annual Achievement Days were held where competitions included shearing sheep - female tyre change teams - sheaf tossing - farm obstacle motorbike riding - dress making - cooking - welding ploughing championships. Following these district events, the winners would then compete in the state achievement day which would be held at a different location each year.

As with many communitybased organisations the number of members, and hence clubs, started to decline with the changes across the agricultural community in 1990s and Young Farmer Clubs were virtually non-existent into the 2000s.

The most common times for former members of the Yarrawonga Young Farmers Club to come together is at the funeral of one of their members.

At one such gathering in it was suggested that an informal social gathering would be a good way to meet old friends and this suggestion has led to a gathering being planned.

March 19 at the Yarrawonga Yacht Club will provide participants with opportunities to re-kindle friendships and re-visit memorable moments and events that made the Victorian Young Farmers Clubs the wonderful organisation that it was.

Come along to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo TICKETS are now on sale for one of the Goulburn Valley’s biggest regional events - the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

The event will run from Friday, March 31 to Sunday, April 2 and once again there is plenty to see and do.

McPherson Media Group event manager Jamie Gilbert said the expo had a long and rich history in the region, showcasing current and future farming practices for small and medium farm enterprises.

The event has also proved to be a popular social day out for couples and families and provides a welcome $6 million injection into the local economy annually.

Mr Gilbert said many fa-

miliar faces would be back as well as some new and exciting exhibitors.

“Due to the flooding late last year in Seymour, we’ve had to adapt the event layout to suit the venue’s current capabilities,” he said.

“Activities, usually found on the main oval, will now be housed on the rear oval.”

This includes vintage car displays, whip cracking championships, as well as Paul McPhail, from Beloka Kelpies, who will be running working dog demonstrations.

Resident chef and butcher team Adrian Hensley and Vic Bonacci have put together a delicious demonstration schedule across Saturday and Sunday, which

will run out of the Country Kitchen and Butcher Shop marquee.

“There will also be plenty of activities for families including the kids’ corner, Bunnings’ activity tent and children’s rides,” Mr Gilbert said.

“It really is three funfilled and informative days with something for everyone.”

Mr Gilbert thanked Mitchell Shire Council, Seymour Football Netball Club and Kings Park Committee of Management for their ongoing support and cooperation.

Roadway drama Man in custody after allegedly speeding, crashing several times through Wangaratta CBD A DRIVER who allegedly “muscled” cars out of his way as he towed a trailer at speed through the Wangaratta CBD remains in custody, after he was captured by police attempting to escape on foot on Thursday.

Bernard Jarman, 40, was charged with more than 30 offences late last week, after he allegedly reached speeds

of up to 90kph while running red lights at Reid Street, Green Street and Sisely Avenue shortly after 5pm, following a collision with another car at the Faithfull Street roundabout.

Similar collisions are alleged to have occurred in the vicinity of Greta Road, Ryley Street, Handley Street and Mason Street, when

the driver was said to have crossed onto the wrong side of the road and narrowly missed oncoming traffic.

Acting Senior Sergeant Trevor Schultz said the accused had headed south on Tone Road before rejoining the Hume Freeway northbound, where he allegedly swerved between lanes before completing

a u-turn on a service road and attempting to travel southbound.

His four-wheel drive was said to have eventually broken down near the Wangaratta-Eldorado Road crossing, at which time Jarman was said to have attempted to flee the vehicle.

A police spokesperson said a number of vehicles

were believed to have been forced to swerve from the road to avoid hitting the man as he allegedly walked along the freeway, including a b-double which had to come to a complete stop.

Act Snr Sgt Schultz said an outpouring of calls and tips from the community as the incident unfolded had played an important role

in assisting police in their pursuit of the accused.

“Thank you very much for the reports being made - it helped the community avoid the serious consequences of his driving,” he said.

“It’s remarkable nobody was hurt - we’re grateful people reported it so quickly.”

Teens look to the future with uni

WANGARATTA High School year 12 graduates Kayla Fisher and Amy Henderson were among hundreds of local students, and tens of thousands around the state, who received their first round university offers yesterday.

The pair are both interested in humanitarian work and development, and were offered their first choice course at their chosen universities.

Kayla, 17, has been offered a

double degree in Arts and Public Policy with a major in third-world development at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“I was happy with my ATAR score even if I thought I could do better but it’s been a tough year,” Kayla said.

“It was difficult not having feedback from classmates because I didn’t know if I was doing okay or needed to improve.

“But, I got there in the end and am

looking forward to the next step.”

Amy, 18, will be doing occupational therapy at Deakin but hopes to branch into humanitarian work in third world countries.

“I had hoped for a higher ATAR but I didn’t need one, I’m pretty happy with how I went,” Amy said.

“Last year I really missed out on having the balance of sport and social aspects of school which really help me get through the study aspect.

“The offer I received was my first choice so I’m really happy with that.

“I’ll jump straight in this year I think because my initial plans to have a gap year and travel aren’t likely now.

“Eventually I want to go into allied health overseas and Kayla and I have always talked about collaborating; she’s more interested in the politics side and I’d do the health side so that could be cool.”

Musicians invited to orchestra meeting MUSICIANS interested in becoming part of a new regional orchestra being formed in Wangaratta will be meeting in the King George V Gardens on Sunday at 2.30pm.

A newly formed committee, involving local violinist Sally Ross, will be in attendance and the group welcomes other potential members to come along, particularly seeking violin and flute players, a percussionist and a conductor.

Ovens Valley United win nail-biter over Beechworth Wanderers

OVENS Valley United’s A grade squad are all but guaranteed a spot in the finals after fighting out a narrow win over Beechworth Wanderers at Whorouly on Saturday.

The Tigers needed to chase down Beechworth’s total of 160 runs for victory and resuming at 1/66 from last weekend, it seemed a standard run chase, but losing wickets in groups made it a much closer match.

Josh Newton continued from where he left off last week, adding another 20 runs to his total before edging one to Brenton Surrey behind the stumps.

Seamus Phillips was unable to score before he was given LBW by Kayde Surrey, and after Harkaran Mann was dismissed for a rare duck, Ovens Valley United were 3/76 and in trouble.

Cooper Thomason (21) and Dylan Bursill (35) managed to get the run chase back on track but the wickets kept falling, with Beechworth’s Cam Fendyk (3/19) causing havoc for the Tigers.

Bursill and Marcello Vescio kept the runs ticking over before reaching the total in the 39th over - the Tigers lost their final wickets in the 43rd over for 172 runs.

With plenty of time left in the day, Beechworth padded back up made 5/111 before stumps.

Cam Fendyk (32*) and Kayde Surrey (16) impressed for the Wanderers, while Vescio (2/15) and Mann (2/34) were the pick of the bowlers.

skipper Bursill said while the result was positive, his side could still improve with the willow in hand.

“It was a bit nerve racking at some stages,” he said.

“It was a bit closer than we thought because we were essentially eight down when we got the runs.

“We would’ve liked to bat some more overs, because in the end we only batted 42 overs which is not good enough in two day cricket.

“Marcello did well for a young fella - you could tell he was a bit nervous but he just stuck at it, he was really good to bat with.

“I didn’t really know myself whether I should try and take some risks or just try and stick it out with the batter at the other end and knock around.

“We ended up just doing that, risk-free cricket and got over the line, which was good.”

The victory puts Ovens Valley safely in third on the ladder, ahead on points over Yarrawonga Mulwala and a win clear of dropping out of finals contention.

“I haven’t really looked at the ladder, but now that we’re a game clear of Beechworth, I think Beechworth would have to have a pretty big win over Wangaratta Magpies and we’d have to have a pretty shocking loss to Benalla to miss out (on finals),” Bursill said.

“I’m going to be pushing for a solid performance against Benalla because the last two games we’ve played against them we’ve lost.”

While a hat-trick didn’t eventuate for Pienaar, his figures of 5/34 from 12 overs opened the door for the pace bowlers to clean up the tail and secure an outright win by an innings and 30 runs.

“Lucky can be very deadly up to the stumps, he’s got very fast hands,” McNamara said.

“We ripped through early, myself and ‘Brades’ (Brady Bartlett) snuck a few wickets in, then Lachy Scales and Adam Storer batted really well and kept the game in a bit of a hold.

“Things dried up until Koot came into play and spun a web which was much-needed for the outright result.

“There were back to back stumpings - the first one, the bloke ran down and the second one, Lucky was just way too quick and the bloke’s foot was just out.

“That was our goal, to get the outright and extra bonus points and sit enough in front of ‘Maggies’ so we can finish in that top spot.

“There’s still a fair bit to play out over the next two weeks, so we’ll keep controlling what we can.

In other A grade matches, Wangaratta Magpies locked in the win over City Colts by 189 runs, Ovens Valley United defeated Beechworth Wanderers by a wicket, and Yarrawonga Mulwala took the win over Benalla Bushrangers.

Murray signs with Essendon VFL

WANGARATTA Rovers talented youngster Toby Murray has signed with Essendon’s VFL side for 2023.

The promising ruck/forward joins the Bombers fresh off last year’s Murray Bushrangers campaign which saw him fall short of finding his way onto an AFL list.

Luckily for the Hawks, Murray has committed to them as his home club when free of VFL commitments.

Wangaratta Rovers football operations manager Barry Sullivan said he was stoked Murray got a VFL opportunity.

“Toby’s a quality kid and is following a Murray family that has had plenty of success in the AFL arena so hopefully he’ll follow suit,” Sullivan said.

“At the same time we’d love the opportunity for him to play a few games with us throughout the year and from what I understand the Essendon VFL list is pretty strong.

“It’ll be interesting to see how he goes and how often he plays with them but we wish him all the best.”

The AFL dream isn’t over for the 19-year-old though who will find plenty of inspiration from brothers Sam and Nick who both found their way onto lists as mature age players.

Sam played 13 games for Collingwood, while Nick has racked up 29 thus far for Adelaide since joining the club in 2021.

“Nick is going from strength to strength at Adelaide and like Toby, was putting in heaps of work before he got drafted,” Sullivan said.

“Nick would work on the family farm until late and then still found time to run and get himself in good shape which was a credit to him.

“Sam was the same, he got picked up straight out of the O&M so I’m sure Toby will draw plenty of inspiration from them both.”

Wangaratta Pacers and trotters cup fast approaching THE Wangaratta Harness Club is just three weeks out from their premier cup meeting.

The club only gets to race at home twice a year making their pacers and trotters cup night on Sunday, March 12 all the more special for the local harness racing community.

The night will be full of entertainment with DJ Steve Bowen hosting proceedings, while there will be a $1000 sweep, wood fired pizzas and pony trots on offer.

Wangaratta Harness Club’s Bernadette Costantino said the date is fast approaching.

“It’s all coming along pretty quickly,” Costantino said.

“Everything’s starting to come together though and thus far we’ve had no issues so we’ll have our fingers crossed that nothing happens in the next few weeks.

“There’s going to be plenty of entertainment and entry’s free as well so there’s nothing to lose really.”

Costantino is determined to make it family event.

“Our aim as a club is always to get families through the gates,” she said.

“Because we don’t get to race at home very often it’s very important that when we do we make it a great night because we want to keep it going for as long as we can.”

A wide selection of food will be on offer with plenty of food vans booked in for the night including curries, hot chips, donuts and ice creams.

Regular canteen and bar facilities will also be open but there will be no BYO alcohol permitted.

The club has been allocated eight race slots pending nominations but the club is expecting to run between six and eight races.

“We’ve been given eight slots so hopefully we’ll fill that but we should get between six and eight races,” Costantino said.

“We’re not 100 per cent sure what time the first race will be but gates will open around 5pm.”

“We did say we’ll have 10 overs to bat and make as many as we can - we obviously thought Koot and Lukey (Whitten) would’ve lasted a bit longer than they did so a few of the boys were caught off guard a bit,” RUB skipper Paddy McNamara said.

“We did swing around for runs but a few of the boys just knuckled down a bit to

give themselves time in the middle because it’s always tough when you’re on top of the two-day games, you want to get as much of a bat as you can leading into finals.

“Koot was pretty up and about - obviously he was on 99 overnight and brought up his 100 with his first ball, hit a single, so that was a great effort to bring up his second
