“The Centre Against Violence opened 362 family violence cases in the 21/22 financial year and is on track to service over 450 this financial year,” Ms Chubb said.

“We estimate 80 per cent of these clients will need legal support and we know the HRCLS is at full capacity and turning away over half of their current referrals.

Nick’s farewell to remember

WHO would have expected that a funeral service for local racing identity Nick Judd would see such emotional scenes of both tears and cheers at the Wangaratta Turf Club wake, earlier this month.

Nick, a breeder, owner and former Wangaratta Turf Club committee member passed away of cancer on September 8, aged 60.

The astute Wangaratta businessman was behind the successful local businesses of Judd’s Menswear and the Worklocker Wangaratta.

I have it on good authority that Nick backed her in 24 of her 25 starts, his collects, shall we say, remain a secret.

As Judd’s nephew, Darcy Judd said, “You would struggle to find a more passionate racing man, than Nick.”

TWO innovative products created by King Valley Walnuts have taken out top gongs at prestigious national food awards this year.

The Myrrhee-based business recently added tamari walnuts to its product line - which won a gold medal at the Royal Sydney Fine Food Awards - while its walnut butter took out a silver medal at the Royal Tasmanian Fine Food Awards in 2022.

The national competitions are judged by panels of industry experts and both set a benchmark for agricultural excellence, while also introducing some of Australia’s best fine food products to a wider audience.

Business manager Carol Kunert said receiving the recognition was a wonderful morale boost for the team after what has been another challenging year, with wet weather over spring and summer last season while the nuts were forming, resulting in a poor harvest.

She said a few added complications including difficulty accessing the sodden orchards made it hard for them to satisfactorily spray for walnut blight, which is spread by rain.

“Most years we can manage quite well to keep it at bay, but having a machinery breakdown meant we couldn’t spray as well as we liked and we ended up with a really small crop,” Ms Kunert said.

“Of what we did get, half were affected (by blight) and we had to crack out quite a few to see inside and make kernels - luckily the other half was a different variety and it wasn’t as affected.

“We used the product we had

Ms Kunert makes the products in her farm kitchen and while the range has included sweeter cinnamon and chilli flavoured baked walnuts, customers told her they wanted something without sugar.

She said having a niece who lives in Japan, the idea came for tamari walnuts (flavoured with naturally fermented soy sauce) which are savoury, but also gluten free, vegan, dairy free and sugar free.

Ms Kunert used xanthan gum instead of egg whites which ensures the product is vegan - and her niece helped design the packaging which gives it a personal touch - having tamari in Japanese characters on the label.

While they used to get their walnut butter made by a contractor, Ms Kunert decided to invest in a nut butter press and now makes it herself in small batches ensuring their freshness.

“Roasting the nuts brings out the flavour and it tastes better than using them raw,” she said.

Speeding drunk driver ban A DRUNK driver who reached speeds of more than 140kph along the Hume Freeway earlier this year was lucky to escape with her life, according to a local magistrate.

Pleading guilty to serious driving-related charges, the Endeavour Hills woman faced Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court last week, when details of her decision to speed while headed northbound near

Police prosecutor Constable Victoria Lennon said police had intercepted the accused near the Wangaratta off-ramp and conveyed her to the local police station, where she returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.105.

The accused, who was

clocked at a speed of 141kph, denied speeding to police, and maintained she had only had two glasses of red wine prior to driving.

Her vehicle was subsequently impounded at a cost of more than $1700.

Defence counsel Will May said the decisions by his client had been “terribly irresponsible and out of character”.

“My client is acutely aware it could have been disastrous,” he told the court. “(She) maintains a sense of perspective around the matter - apart from this matter she’s a person who hasn’t put a foot wrong.”

The accused was supported by five character references which, according to Mr May,

“spoke to someone who has always been professional and responsible”.

Magistrate Victoria Campbell said the accused's decision to drive could have had fatal consequences.

“You had drunk a lot - it’s over double the limit,” she told the accused.

“You were incredibly lucky not to kill yourself or another road user.

“You should never have got in the car at that time.”

Ms Campbell did not impose a conviction, instead imposing a 10 month licence ban which will see the accused sidelined from driving until early next year.

She also ordered the defendant pay $800 to court-funded charities.

Floodwaters in city recede, but forecast of more rain

FLOODWATERS which had turned Apex Park into a lake last week continued to recede over the weekend, allowing holiday makers to use playground facilities yesterday.

After reaching moderate flood level and peaking at 12.42m last week - its highest since similar spring flooding in October 2016 - the Ovens River continued to recede and fall back within its banks over the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology said falls of 5mm to 20mm recorded in the Ovens and King catchments in the 24 hours to 10am Saturday saw flooding drop to minor levels at the King River at Docker and Ovens River at Wangaratta.

And yesterday morning both rivers were below the minor flood level, with the Ovens River at Wangaratta at 11.76 metres (11.9m minor flood level).

River levels could rise again early this week though, with the bureau forecasting a 95 per cent chance of Wangaratta getting rain today and tomorrow, and across the catchment, with falls of 6mm to 10mm today and 8mm to 20mm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the SES will hold a Flood Community Update meeting in Wangaratta this Friday.

The meeting aims to improve community awareness and improve responsiveness in the event of spring flooding, and is not an emergency meetings as a result of recent flooding in the region.

Wangaratta and surrounding communities will meet at Wareena Park Hall from 5:30pm.

All attendees are encouraged to bring their own flood photos and be prepared to share their local knowledge of the region.

Centre Against Violence leads charge to support youth impacted by domestic violence ■

From page 1 Ms Chubb said the existing Magistrates’ Court system in Wangaratta would need to undergo significant change before it could be fit for purpose to truly reach positive outcomes for victims of family violence.

The current practice often sees complainants and perpetrators forced to walk past each other in the court’s halls and sit in close proximity during hearings, while specialist courts are designed to offer separate entries and exits for victim survivors.

Specialist family violence courts were a key recommendation of the 2016 Royal Commission into Family Violence.

“We’re talking about people who have already experienced significant abuse and trauma and isolation and disadvantage, and then we’re putting them through a system that’s not designed to have the best outcome for them and their families,” Ms Chubb said.

“The other part of it that’s really important for us is that most of the cases that come through CAV

and then end up in the court system also include children, so we’re talking about young people who have experienced profound abuse within the home or experienced violence either towards themselves or to a parent.

“And then there are the people who live with the consequences of the court system that isn’t best placed to support their family’s future needs - so it’s really important... that we actually have the service system set up to create meaningful change for their individual

families, but more holistically for the whole community.

“We are not saying that having a specialist family violence court and legal aid service will fix family violence in the region - however, it will mean that we are putting in place a system that will help to support their safety long-term.

“It will mean the holistic needs of the entire family will be considered, and the trauma of court will be minimised - we cannot underestimate the impact that will have.”

Brigades given a life-saving shock from public donations

$200 vouchers to help kids’ sporting costs ELIGIBLE families can apply for vouchers of up to $200 and use them at registered sporting clubs and activity providers without having to worry about upfront costs.

The State Government’s Get Active Kids vouchers can be used to cover the costs of equipment, uniforms and memberships across a range of activities from club cricket to dance.

Parents and carers of toddlers can also use the vouchers for learn-to-swim classes.

For children to be eligible, they must be aged 18 and under, a Victorian resident, named on a valid Commonwealth Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card and named on a valid Medicare Card at the time of application.

Clubs, associations and organisations can register anytime to be a Get Active Kids Voucher Activity Provider to be able to redeem the voucher from the government.

Clubs and sporting organisations must be affiliated with a recognised State Sporting Association or equivalent governing body to be eligible.

Applications for this round close at 5pm on November 30.

Families can also continue to claim reimbursement for expenses already incurred prior to the opening of this round.

By RYAN MALCOLM A STATEWIDE rollout of vital life-saving equipment will allow local CFA brigades to drastically improve their chances of survival if struck by a cardiac episode while on the fireground.

The last of more than 1195 defibrillators were last week delivered to CFA districts across Victoria, as part of a $2.5m CFA Brigades Donations Fund and CFA Public Fund initiative to place cardiac equipment on every brigade and group vehicle statewide.

Winton CFA brigade captain Phil Spokes said the new equipment was a welcome addition for his 35-strong brigade, which previously had no access to a defibrillator within the community.

He said crews often fought blazes in areas lacking phone coverage, creating additional challenges for brigade members who may not be able to instantly contact an ambulance while facing a life-threatening situation.

“It’s boosted our safety on the fireground - I think it’s a life-changer,” he said.

“With an ageing population within the brigade, on the firegrounds we didn’t have access to a defibrillator

“You look at the outerlying brigades like Cheshunt - that’s where it’s got to be huge for them.

“I think it’s one of the best things the organisa-

tions have done.”

According to Mr Spokes, Winton brigade had received their defibrillator around six months previous, and undergone specialist first aid and CPR training.

He said volunteer firefighters had always been well supported within the community.

“People often talk about

whether we should be paid I get to go out and help people on potentially the worst day of their life, it’s rewarding enough,” he said.

“We certainly appreciate every bit of support we get - we need to give a big pat on the back to the community.”

According to CFA & Brigades Donations Fund chair Graeme Jilbert, it remained

crucial all donated funds directly benefit volunteers and the communities they serve.

“We cannot thank our donors enough for their generous contributions to CFA,” he said.

“Those who donate can be assured that initiatives such as this defibrillator rollout will certainly help improve member safety.”

Action on family violence overdue THE North East continues to lag behind in its ability to manage soaring rates of family violence, left to fend for itself while much of regional Victoria receives significant investment into specialist services.

Specialist family violence courts (SFVC) have popped up across the state in the aftermath of the 2016 Royal Commission into Family Violence, with significant planning and resource placed into strengthening the regional response to domestic violence.

Specialist courts in Shepparton and Ballarat have opened, while Bendigo (2023) and Latrobe Valley (planning stage) are set to welcome the new infrastructure in the coming years.

With family violence particularly rife in the North East, where incident rates in Wodonga (+52pc), Wangaratta (+50pc) and Benalla (+82pc) well above the state average, why has the region hereto been overlooked for urgent assistance in the space?

Wangaratta is home to specialist family violence police, whose job it is to investigate reports of violence within the home and hold offenders to account.

But without the proper court system and ability to treat offenders, recidivism is a common occurrence.

This is without even looking at the victims of family violence, who are the most in-need of support while navigating the existing court system.

Regional legal services are being forced to turn away victim survivors in their hundreds, purely due to understaffing and a lack of resourcing.

The region is in desperate need of a helping hand to combat what has become a dangerous phenomenon which will undoubtedly impact the next generation if unaddressed.

It’s time for the State Government to act.

We are heading back to ‘Big Australia’ THE figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) last week reveal the country is heading back to ‘Big Australia’.

While some post-COVID ‘bounce back’ in net overseas migration was understandable, the large increase in arrivals (up 183 per cent on the previous year to 320,000) was excessive.

Emigration, or departures, had held steady (up 1.5 per cent to 210,400).

Population growth to the year ending March 31, 2022 was back to 0.9 per cent, or just under 240,000 people.

All these new people, be they native born or immigrants, must be fed, clothed and sheltered.

They all require infrastructure such as roads, schools and hospitals.

And yet there is already a housing crisis across the country.

It is not just hundreds of thousands of extra people needing infrastructure; there are already environmental problems attributable to human encroachment into natural spaces.

The State of the Environment 2021 report released in July was quite explicit about population growth having 'high impact' on biodiversity.

We have new climate laws that demand 43 per cent reduction in emissions on 2005 levels by 2030.

The more people; the harder it will be to meet those targets.

We have now returned to the pre-COVID levels of population growth of which most Australians believed they had seen the end.

The pre-election silence of both major parties on the topic of immigration made clear that each understood more population growth was not what most Australians wanted.

The people are now entitled to ask why they have been ignored.

The Andrews Labor Government’s support for business and workers has created jobs across the state with Victoria’s regional unemployment rate well below the national regional unemployment rate of 3.3 per cent.

In New South Wales and Queensland the rate is 3.2 per cent and in Western Australia it is 3.5 per cent.

The Labor Government was elected to office in November 2014 when the regional unemployment rate was a high 6.6 per cent, but under this government the rate has more than halved.

Statewide, an ongoing surge in the creation of full-time jobs has driven Victoria’s overall jobs growth, with more than 3.5 million Victorians in work.

Since taking office in November 2014, the government has created more than 600,000 new jobs in Victoria - almost eight in 10 of them full-time roles - with a strong focus on female employment.

There have never been more Victorian women in jobs.

The state's economy is the fastest growing in the country with the ABS reporting State Final Demand growth in Victoria for 2021-22 is 40 per cent higher than the national average.

The NAB Monthly Business Survey released last week showed business conditions are continuing to improve - the survey index is double the level it was 12 months ago.

Victoria was No.1 in the most recent CommSec State of the States quarterly report, which highlighted the state’s jobs success, buoyant retail trade and growth in construction activity.

Victoria’s Big Build is supporting thousands of jobs across the state, with investment in capital projects forecast to top $21 billion annually for the next four years.

Scamwatch issues warning after Optus cyber-attack

CYBER-ATTACK: Optus customers’ personal information was the subject of a cyberattack last week.

SCAMWATCH has urged Optus customers to be on the lookout for scams and take steps to secure their personal information following last week's cyber-attack on the national service provider.

The recent attack is said to have seen the release of Optus customers’ personal information, with customers warned their name, date of birth, phone number, email address, and potentially their driver's licence or passport numbers could be in the hands of criminals.

As a result, bank and financial

information may also be at risk, with all customers encouraged to monitor for unusual activity and keep an eye out for contact from scammers.

To protect your personal information, Scamwatch encourages community members to: • Secure your devices and monitor for unusual activity; • Change your online account passwords and enable multi-factor authentication for banking; • Check your accounts for unusual activity such as items you haven't purchased;

Maxwell backs stalking reform WA N G A R AT TA - b a s e d state MP Tania Maxwell will continue efforts to establish an offender monitoring pilot, after the scheme was overlooked by a Victorian Law Reform Commission (VLRC) investigation into the state’s stalking response.

The VLRC recently tabled 45 recommendations to government, including specific sentencing guidance for

breaches of personal safety intervention orders (PSIOs) and making sure legal representation is available to applicants or protected witnesses.

Having initially presented a petition to parliament on behalf of the family and friends of Celeste Manno, who lost her life in her Mernda home in 2020, Ms Maxwell said she hoped the government would provide a formal response to

the review and its individual recommendations.

“Our Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party made 43 recommendations in its own submission and we’re pleased to see that some of them, particularly related to victim support, were picked up by the VLRC,” she said.

“But I’m disappointed that electronic monitoring was not recommended as a po-

tential response for offenders identified as high-risk recidivist stalkers, with the VLRC suggesting it was too controversial.

“It’s a proven fact - electronic monitoring improves the safety of women and children subjected to family violence, with a successful trial of these devices in Tasmania since 2015.”

Ms Maxwell said an inves-

tigation into electric monitoring last year found that when used in conjunctions with intensive support, the initiative could assist in changing perpetrator behaviour.

“At the same time, I recognise the review has made key recommendations to improve the justice system’s management of PSIOs, including early intervention to address problematic be-

haviour before it escalates,” she said.

“But this is a bittersweet moment for Celeste Manno’s family and a tough day for Celeste’s mother Aggie, and brother Alessandro, who attended parliament for the report’s tabling.

“I commend Aggie for her brave advocacy in pushing for this review and for stalking reform.”

Tuning in to kids - emotionally intelligent parenting at hand

“We work with parents and carers to look at managing meltdowns, tuning in to children's emotions to help manage behaviour, emotion coaching to help children understand and regulate their emotions, problem solving and the many different styles of parenting.”

Claire Parsons, Gateway Health team leader of parent education, said the Tuning in to Kids is a free program available for parents and carers of children aged from two to 10 years.

She said the program will be held from 6pm 8pm each Tuesday from November 1 to 29.

Local jeweller shines in Benalla exhibition

By ANITA McPHERSON HANDMADE jewellery by local jeweller and metalsmith Molly Herry-Carscallen is on display at the Benalla Art Gallery all this month.

Called A Natural Balance, the exhibition in the gallery shop cabinets includes elegant rings, earrings and necklaces - select pieces from Molly’s relatively recent foray into the world of experimental silver smithing having only started design studies in the field at Melbourne Polytechnic in 2018.

Molly Herry-Carscallen said of her creations that she enjoys seeing where the material takes her.

Across the arts “Often a piece will morph from the original idea during creation as the metal reacts to different processes,” she said.

“Working from my sustainable studio alongside a billabong, I’m forever inspired by the natural world, and this also informs the way each piece evolves.

“I also particularly enjoy creating pieces that make the wearer feel empowered and delighted.

“My aesthetic draws on elements of minimalism blended with a playfulness.

“I love experimenting with form, texture, colour, line, sim-

plicity and balance.”

Benalla Art Gallery director Eric Nash said the pieces Molly has created are unique and have a natural elegance.

“This exhibition is also representative of the diverse artistic practices of creatives living within Benalla and the broader North East region,” he said.

“The environment doesn’t only inspire Molly’s aesthetic - it is also a key consideration for the artist in her process of creation.”

Molly says she doesn’t believe jewellery can be wholly sustainable in its own right.

“When using metals and gemstones which in themselves are finite resources

mined from the earth this will inevitably impact our planet,” she said.

“I focus on how to minimise this impact - for example - my home studio is powered by renewable energy and I only use 100 per cent recycled precious and non-precious metals and up-cycled building materials.

“I prefer to use lab-grown gemstones, or traceable, responsibly mined natural gemstones.

“These types of considerations are consistent across my practice.”

The handmade jewellery will be on display in the gallery shop cabinets for the month of September.

Celebrate at Seniors’ Festival

COMMUNITY CONCERT: Briar and James Blundell will perform a free country concert at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre on Friday, October 21.

THE Victorian Seniors returns for its 40th year on October, celebrating the valuable contribution older Victorians make to the local community.

The festival theme this year is Takin’ It Easy which focuses on presenting accessible and comfortable spaces to ensure senior Victorians feel relaxed to participate and ease back into events.

A number of events will be held in Wangaratta and right across the state and to ensure older Victorians can make the most of them, Victorian Seniors Card holders can access free travel on public transport services from October 2 to 9, including on V/Line.

Weather serves up a mixed bag across the country BELOW normal maximum temperatures have continued on most days this month in Victoria and the southern half of NSW and over most of South Australia .

At the same time the northern parts of the NT and in the Kimberley region of WA have had maximum temperatures as high as four degrees above the September normal.

Daly Waters has recorded three days of just over 40 degrees Celsius since September 13 and the current mean maximum temperature reached 36.7C, almost the hottest on record for September.

Following the coldest July at Daly Waters since 1968, the mean maximum being 27C, this makes it the biggest temperature rise of nearly 10 degrees from July to September in over 95 years of

records at Daly Waters.

The previous maximums temperature at Daly Waters were in 1933 and 1992 and set up high rainfall in September all the way to March the following year in North East Victoria despite the coming summer season being warmer than average with more thunderstorms than usual.

Currently another complex low system is moving across NSW and has brought patchy rainfalls to Victoria and the Riverina , the heaviest rains being 35mm at Walpeup, 24mm at Ouyen and 22mm at Mildura to Wednesday

Further north heavy rain fell at many places including 46.7mm to Thursday morning September 22 at Coonabarabran taking this month’s total to 134.6 mm more than double the September average.

After 142.8mm in August this makes it successive months of over 100mm rainfall in both August and September in Coonabarabran in the same year which last happened in 1998 and before that in 1973 and 1906.

Tamworth received 38.4mm taking the September total to 134mm, the town’s wettest Sep-

tember since 161mm in 1949.

October and November 1949 were very wet stormy months in Wangaratta with 261mm rain altogether.

Gunnedah’s 49.6mm to Thursday morning took the September total to 151mm making it the wettest ever September in 146 years of records.

Wangaratta had 54 rain days during winter and another 10 rain days to date this September, more than usual for this period and there is certainly a lot of water lying around and many flooded creeks which I saw while cycling down to Baddaginnie last Monday.

Man from Snowy River returns to Merrijig for cattlemen’s celebration THE original man from Snowy River is set to return to Merrijig later this month, as part of 40th anniversary celebrations for the hit film.

Tom Burlinson (pictured), who played the titular Jim Craig in the heralded 1982 film, will don the hat and moleskins as he joins members of the Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria (MCAV) at their annual get together from September 30.

“The Man from Snowy River is why some people come to my shows,” Mr Burlinson said.

“They love it and want me

to sign their DVD, or an old photograph from way back when the movie was first released.”

Based on the famed Banjo Patterson poem of the same name, The Man From Snowy River was the third highestgrossing Australian film between 1964 and 2009, and has long been credited as putting the high country on the map.

The $17.2m it raised at the Australian box office is equivalent to more than $65m in 2022.

Mr Burlinson said the role had posed a number of challenges, namely testing his proficiency for horse riding, which he developed under the tutelage of Charlie Lovick, whose horse had already been chosen for the movie.

He honed his craft with the Lovick family, completing regular trail rides to Howqua and Wonnangatta.

“I remember reading the script and thinking, this guy sounds like he needs to be a pretty good rider - I’ve only sat on a horse two times,” he said.

“Charlie was the natural pick - he owned the horse, he was a fourth generation cattleman, and he could show me the practical skills, not just riding wood chopping, whip cracking - that kind of thing.

“He also put me in touch with all the mountain cattlemen, because of course that’s what Jim (Craig) was and that’s what I needed to be.

“As it turned out, I had a natural seat as a rider - no one guessed that this green young man from Sydney would be able to learn to ride quickly.

“It led to me doing far more of the riding in the movie, and it enabled the director to get in close.

Bullish buyers’ big bidding $120,00 tops sale: 60 bulls sold at average of $15,517

By ANDY WILSON THE bidding was fast and a new record price set for a single bull at the Alpine Angus spring bull sale at Rosewhite last Wednesday.

More than 120 buyers and spectators jammed the stands at the property along with online buyers to see 60 bulls go under the hammer.

Alpine Angus manager Chris Oswin said it had been a busy time in preparation and he was pleased with the day's outcome, with all bulls sold at an overall average of $15,517.

The sale price for “Alpine 38 Special” set a new record of $120,000 and the bull was headed for a property west of Esperance in Western Australia.

Siobhan Cowan from Arkle Angus near Esperance said they chose the bull on a visit six weeks earlier and were pleased with the purchase.

“He has an exceptional phenotype and structure, and a good balance of numbers which completes the package,” she said.

However, according to Alpine Angus owner Jim Delany, such a record sale price can be a double edged sword.

“Naturally such a high price for a single bull is going to raise our average sale price mathematically, but that does not properly reflect a better estimate of the majority of prices that eventuated,” Mr Delany said.

“While it is great that some interstate studs recognise where our program sits in the industry, our core business is to local producers.

“So we want local farmers to know that our stock represent pretty good value for money despite a couple of sales inflating the average.”

Another balancing act that Mr Oswin perfects each year is producing high numbers of bulls but not at the expense of their breeding quality and structure.

Mr Delany said that Mr Oswin was careful in producing the right combination to achieve this.

“All credit goes to Chris,” he said.

Agri-food Export Essentials series is a fourpart webinar series that supports Victorian agricultural producers build their capabilities to export more products to more markets, more often.

Presented by Collins Rex, an experienced trade advisor, the series focuses on what a business needs to consider before starting to export and introduces

trade-specific modules to build export confidence.

Sarah-Jane McCormack, executive director of agriculture policy and programs, said this series will help smaller agri-food businesses expand into international markets and empower small-scale producers to take advantage of export opportunities.

Silage tyre compromise a win for state farmers, says VFF president THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) said the move for farmers to no longer need an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) license when using more than 5000 tyres to weigh down silage is a win for farmers.

VFF president Emma Germano said the move to registration is welcome and is reward for more than two years of consultation between Dairy Australia, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and

Environment (DELWP), the EPA and the VFF. “This is a step in the right direction towards simplifying the process for farmers and avoiding costly and time-consuming red-tape,” Ms Germano said.

“It was an absolute headache for farmers to obtain a license or face eye-watering fines.

“The move to compromise and introduce a registration system is a workable solution.”

of Victoria president Mark Billing said the decision is welcome news for dairy farmers throughout the state.

“Farmers helped provide invaluable information that was used to design these new regulations,” he said.

“We believe this move will streamline compliance and remove the need for a license.

Oxley table tennis begin final stretch of competition AS expected numbers were well down at the Oxley social table tennis competition last Monday night, as a number of regulars were intending to view the television coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.

However 13 players, including one debutant, lined up for non-stop action.

William Bonwick was keen to get his $2 worth of fun for the night, as he and the bloke who revels in highs and lows, Neil Spurgeon, took on power houses Jason Mullins and Gary Coad.

And it was certainly not a game for the faint-hearted, as each player threw himself, both literally and metaphorically, into the unknown, with over driving , under cutting with umbridled enthusiasm that seemed would never end.

But end it did, in a tiebreaker, leaving onlookers exhausted.

As always Richard Morgan arrived with his bat in one hand and a container of ‘home-mades’ in the other.

And he hit the floor running when he lined up with

the much slower paced, June Uebergang.

Facing up to the girl on the ‘swings and roundabouts’, Alison Stephens, and newcomer to Wangaratta, Grant Smith, it it was fun and games, with serious intent from the first point.

While Morgan and Smith played in top gear and down the centre line, Uebergang and Stephens toughed it out in a lower gear as they handles d the bends and the corners.

A very long, even and tough contest, after which everyone

was glad to rest in neutral.

Known for being very talented with a lawn bowl or a table tennis bat in his hand, Adam Bosley was all systems go when he and Graham Stephens pulled on the boot to take on ‘nimble and nifty’, Sue McGregor and ‘never give in’ Martin Butcher.

It was a tough and tenacious battle from the first bounce of the ball.

Every shot in the book was utilised, as each pair tried to get the upper hand in what turned out to be

a marathon match, after which no one could remember the score. oung Zac Mullins and ‘the man in the moment’, Adam Bosley, threw out the challenge to the two gs, Graham Stephens and Grant Smith, in yet another power and precision performance by all four players.

As each player capitilised on his signature shots, there was never a dull moment from the first ping of the ball.

However all good things must come to an end, and

high fives and warm handshakes confirmed everyone was a winner.

Concluding the night’s feast of activity, everyone retired to the supper table for a cuppa and feast of food and chatter, while organising re-matches for next week.

Everyone is advised the season will come to a close on October 10.

The evening will include table tennis and a celebration of a very enjoyable season of physical and social activity.

Hoysted returns from World Cup

FORMER Wangaratta and District Cricket Association president Greg Hoysted is home after playing for the Australia in the inaugural Over 60s Cricket World Cup on the Sunshine Coast.

The tournament was originally scheduled for 2020, but had to be pushed back to this year due to COVID complications.

The Aussies went up against over 60s sides from all around the world including Wales, New Zealand, Canada, India and Pakistan in the tournament which ran from September 2 to 15.

Australia finished third in the tournament, going down by one wicket in the semifinal to eventual champions Pakistan.

Hoysted, picked as a batter, shone in the match for third place against Canada, where he scored 81* from 107 deliveries - he finished the tournament with 94 runs from four innings at an average of 47 and took three catches.

“It was a wonderful event, meeting cricketers from all over the world was terrific,” Hoysted said.

“It was a real eye opener to see how good Canada was, they were a seriously good cricket side.

“Their team was pretty much all expats from India and Sri Lanka, but they were good players, their top six batting was as good as any top six batting in the comp.

“The Kiwis were good, Pakistan were very good - I think Pakistan had eight or nine ex-first class cricketers, so they were a very good side, and Wales were good, a well-drilled side.

“We saw a lot of good cricket over the time, but just getting together was fantastic.”

Australia’s final match of the tournament was against Canada for third place.

The Canadians set 172, and an unbroken Australian opening partnership between Hoysted and Tasmanian Glenn Richardson got the Aussies over the line.

“We’d bowled and fielded

quite well - Canada’s a good batting side so keeping them to 172, we were happy with that,” Hoysted said.

“In the side we probably had five opening batters we had to juggle around so I had ended up batting down the order during the earlier rounds, so in the third v fourth playoff they gave me a chance to open.

“Glenn (Richardson) and I put on the full 173 to win the game, which I think is a record for Australia’s Over 60s.

“It’s played in terrific spirit, it’s very competitive but you don’t get blow-ups or anything - people have played enough cricket so they go as hard as they can but they make sure they acknowledge when someone else does something good and you shake hands and have a beer at the end, or in the Pakistani’s case shake hands and have a soft drink at the end.”

With the details for the 2024 World Cup still up in the air, Hoysted said he will work hard to keep his name in the selection pool.

Cashen on a mission to aid local tennis community

YOUNG STAR: Cashen Monk will heading off on Tennis Vitoria’s Future Leaders Camp today and will be looking to share his learnings with the Wangaratta Hardcurt Tennis Club on his return to “give back” to his local club.

WANGARATTA Hardcourt Tennis Club member Cashen Monk will be heading off to Tennis Victoria’s young leaders camp next week to learn the valuable crafts of volunteering to give back to his tennis club.

The 15 year-old Cashen was nominated by the club to take a part in the program and is one of 30 year 10 and 11 students selected across Victoria.

The program includes a three day camp at the the Grand Slam Tennis Precinct in Melbourne, a certificate in the Tennis Australis Foundation Coaching Course and the opportunity to develop and refine their leadership experience and skills.

The camp will aim to bring the next generation of volunteers to work closely with local tennis clubs in creating welcoming environments on and off the tennis court.

Cashen said he hopes to gain skills in leadership, confidence and self-esteem skills from the camp to help im-

prove his beloved club.

“I have helped with some of the younger kids around the club before, but have done nothing like this,” he said.

“Just to help out my club for all the things that they’ve done over the years for me, help them grow a bit more and get other kids to do the same as me,” he said.

As a part of the Future Leaders course, Cashen will be required to complete a minimum of 40 hours work in completing a major project at the hardcourt club on his return with an idea he generates at the camp.

Mum Andrea said she is excited to see what Cashen can come up with to improve the tennis club.

“Hopefully comes back to the hardcourts with an idea that he’s grown to help grow memberships or streamline payments, there’s a lot of opportunity to have an impact and that’s what this is all about,” she said.

The camp will run from Monday, September 26 and finish on Wednesday.

Magpies’ flag in thriller

By WILLSON MACK WANGARATTA thirds’ footballers got the Ovens and Murray grand final day off to a flier with a thrilling four point victory over Corowa-Rutherglen at the Lavington Sportsground yesterday.

It was a game of momentum with both teams kicking flurries of goals at different stages throughout the match but ultimately it was the Magpies who prevailed 10.13 (73) to 10.9 (69).

The Magpies started well kicking the first three goals of the game, including a Jayden Adamo snap from the right pocket that dribbled through.

However, the Roos bounced back in the second term, producing one of their best quarters of the year to grab the half-time lead 6.5 (41) to Wangaratta’s 5.5 (35).

Wangaratta drew level in the third quarter and looked like they had found their groove, but it was Corowa-Rutherglen who went to another gear to lead 9.9 (63) to 7.6 (48) at the final change.

However, Wangaratta’s key forward Xavier Laverty stood tall, taking two brilliant contested grabs 20 and 25 metres out within the space of five minutes with both resulting in goals to bring the Magpies within a kick of the lead.

It was then Charley Holland-Dean's time to shine, with the young gun converting a set shot from 45 metres out on a slight angle to give his side the lead.

From there the Magpies held on with Will O’Keefe arguably best on ground, running riot through the middle of the ground.

Corowa-Rutherglen’s Jedd Longmire won the Brett Kirk Medal for best on ground.

Wangaratta coach Matt Hedin was over the moon with the victory.

“It’s just fantastic,” Hedin said.

“The boys showed real character to come back the way they did.

“We were a little concerned when we were down but we knew if we took the emotion out of it and kicked one or two (goals) the momentum would swing back our way.

“Once we got on top in general play we were able to get back into it.”

Wangaratta backman Ryan Battin was invaluable in the final term, taking multiple intercept marks when CorowaRutherglen looked dangerous entering their forward 50.

“Ryan was excellent, he took four or five intercept marks when we really needed them,” Hedin said.

“I think he was certainly one of our best.”

Adamo and Joe Berry kicked two goals each for the winners, while Roos' forward Ryan Beveridge kicked four.

Rovers fall short in decider

WANGARATTA Rovers’ reserves footballers did so much right in the O&M grand final yesterday, but errant goal kicking spelled the difference between victory and defeat, the Rovers downed 7.14 (56) to 10.8 (68) by Yarrawonga.

The brown and gold got off to a strong start, with Alex Dowsley sending one through the big sticks to open their account, as the physicality of the game was ramped up.

A formidable momentum shift towards the Pigeons gave rise to a six-goal quarter to the blue and white, as the Rovers entered the long break trailing by four goals.

The Rovers had the majority of play, bringing it to within a goal in the final quarter, but couldn’t convert - eight behinds with no goal in the fourth term spelled disaster.

Rovers coach Darcy Booth said his side simply didn’t make the most of their chances.

“I think we were the better side for the first quarter; second quarter they started to take some opportunistic chances and kicked a couple of crucial goals,” he said.

“I’m really proud of the way the boys after half time came out, wrestled back momentum.

“We certainly had the majority of the footy in the second half and then in the last quarter we probably had about 80 per cent of the footy.

“We kicked eight behinds so we didn’t take our chances and as they say ‘good kicking’s good footy’, so you’ve got to take those opportunities.”

The physical nature of the grand final left players on both sides bruised and battered, but thankfully there were no serious injuries.

“There were a couple of bumps and bruises - it was a pretty physical game, so the majority of the blokes who ended getting taped up a bit just had a couple of flesh wounds through the rough and tumble of it,” Booth said.

“Aside from some sore bodies, we’ve come away pretty unscathed.

“Yarra’ are a physical side, they certainly made sure we earned every kick and I reckon we did the same to them as well.”

Stuart Booth and Alex Dowsley picked up a pair of goals each, while the wellknown Rovers names stood up time and again.

‘Chambo’ did a really good job on him,” Booth said.

“Cam Nottle was his usual energetic self, he really got the boys up.

“I thought Coen Hennessy was really big for us in the ruck - he was under a bit of duress, he hurt himself in the first quarter - we needed him to take the majority of the ruck load for us and I thought he was massive.

“Josh Newton was pretty good, again under duress, and Nic Henderson led from the front as always.

“I was really proud of most of the boys, I couldn’t really pick anyone that didn’t do their role yesterday.”

Wangaratta coach Ben Reid was ecstatic after the win.

“I’m just so proud,” Reid said.

“I felt like we deserved it by the way we played all year.

“It’s a credit and a reward for the effort and hours we’ve put in all year.

“All the hours on the track are worth it when you get to this.”

Similarly to the qualifying final clash, it was a game of swings with both sides having moments of goal kicking frenzies.

“The game probably panned out the same way all our games against them have been played this year,” Reid said.

“It was an unbelievable game and credit to them they’re a really good side.”

Reid joined the Magpies in 2021 and stepped up as coach this season, winning his maiden premiership as the head man in his first year at the helm.

“I’m so rapt to be a part of this,” he said.

“The club has given me so much support, blokes like Dean Stone, Dale Carmody, Kent Braden and Just McMahon have helped me out so much.

“I just couldn’t be prouder to be and be at this club and coaching this group of players.”

WANGARATTA’S Daniel Sharrock was battling glandular fever in the lead up to yesterday’s Ovens and Murray grand final but played a key role in his side’s triumph.

Sharrock has been battling the illness since after round 17’s game against Lavington which forced the dynamic midfielder to miss the qualifying final clash against the Pigeons.

The young gun battled the game out on Morris Medallist Leigh Masters.

“From last week I sort of knew it was coming because I’m not 100 per cent,” Sharrock said.

“I could tell the coaches were going to put me on him but I trained with Leigh at Williamstown and he’s a ripping fell and an incredible player.

“He started doing tricks and was running through

the middle and it was a really good contest.

“Hopefully I got the better of him but yeah it was good.”

The classy midfielders admitted he was in no shape to play in Wangaratta’s qualifying final “I copped a knock against Lavington and I thought I’d broken some ribs,” Sharrock said.

“I got a scan and it wasn’t broken ribs but I was then ran down from that knock and ended up getting glandular fever out of that.

“I’ve been really ran down which is why I didn’t play the other week, I was like a zombie.”

Sharrock was beaming

with joy at the thought of being a Wangaratta premiership player.

“It’s awesome, we speak about it all the time - losing 2018 and 2019 hurt a lot of us,” he said.

“To get the win is just so special, half the group here lost those ones so we’re just relieved we got the team back together and produced what we did today.

“It means a lot to all of us.”

Yarrawonga looked a chance at three quarter time but Sharrock said coach Ben Reid wanted his side to stay ruthless.

“He just wanted us to be ruthless with how we play,” he said.

“We’ve harped on it all year being a ruthless team.

“It’s a relief though.

“A lot of hard work goes into these games and we almost gave it away but to get the win makes me so happy.”

By WILLSON MACK WANGARATTA A grade netballers couldn’t get the job done in their grand final clash against Yarrawonga at the Lavington Sportsground on Sunday.

The Magpies took it up to the Pigeons early on but couldn't stay with the premiership winners, going down 44-31.

It was Yarrawonga's tall defenders that exposed the Magpies who were without tall shooter Georgia Clark who missed with a knee injury.

Wangaratta co-coach Chaye Crimmins said Yarrawonga were too good.

“Overall the game was very up and down for us and probably not our ideal game but we showed great fight and everyone who took the court did what they could,” Crimmins said “Throughout the game there were different stages that they got on top of us.

“But the second quarter was probably the most prominent part of the game where they got on top.”

Despite the loss, Crimmins was still in awe of what her girls achieved throughout the year.

“I’m super proud,” Crimmins said.

“We have had a really up and down season with some fantastic wins and some really hard loses.

“We are so proud of where we were able to get to and we look forward to season 2023.”

Yarrawonga’s Bridget Cassar couldn't be stopped under the ring, netting 33 goals, while Wangaratta's Rachelle Petts and Grace Patterson netted 12 goals each.

their opportunities kicking 2.5 to one straight.

Joe Richards was showing his speed off early, bursting through the middle of the ground and lacing Callum Moore up 35 metres out.

The second quarter was a stand off early with neither team able to kick away.

That changed in the last

10 minutes though with Moore bobbing up for two goals from virtually the same spot, 45 metres out in front, to give his team the lead at the main break 5.8 (38) to 3.0 (18).

It was the penultimate term though where Yarrawonga found their groove.

Jack Sexton was finding plenty of the ball, while Leigh Williams was lethal up forward with three third quarter majors.

The Pigeons looked like they were going to lead going into the final change but a late Magpie goal saw them up by a goal.
