She said Crime Statistics Victoria figures indicating Wangaratta’s family violence rate was more than 50 per cent higher than the

ing family violence rates throughout the North East, with Wodonga (+52pc) and Benalla (+82pc) recording rates significantly higher than the Victorian average. The region’s closest specialist family violence court currently operates in Shepparton, while Hume Riverina Community Legal Service (HRCLS) has been overrun with demand for free support in recent years.

“The Centre Against Violence opened 362 family violence cases in the 21/22 financial year and is on track to service over 450 this financial year,” Ms Chubb said. “We estimate 80 per cent of these clients will need legal support and we know the HRCLS is at full capacity and turning away over half of their current referrals. “This data is only the tip
