TODAY will be a special homecoming for Wangaratta’s own Captain Cameron Wilson. It will be his first Anzac Day in Wangaratta since he joined the Australian Defence Force after completing year 12 at Galen Catholic College in 2006. Captain Wilson, who now instructs pilots how to fly ARH Tiger two-seater attack helicopters at the Oakey Base near Toowoomba, will be giving today’s official address at Wangaratta’s main 11am Anzac Day service at the Wangaratta Cenotaph. A large crowd is expected to watch the traditional Anzac Day march leaving King George V Gardens at 10.40am and proceeding up Ovens Street to the cenotaph for the service. Weather permitting, a WW2 Kittyhawk fighter aircraft will fly over the cenotaph at 11am to mark the start of the service. Dawn services were also being held in Wangaratta, Eldorado and Whitfield this morning, with a 9am service at Everton and 9.30am service in the Moyhu Lions Park. PHOTO: Jeff Zeuschner

AN alleged car thief is in custody following a dramatic high speed chase between Albury and Benalla on Saturday that involved the suspect driving in the wrong direction against traffic on the Hume Freeway. Police allege the 23-yearold Albury man stole a black Mitsubishi Triton utility from a Wangaratta premises in the Baltimore Estate at about 3.15am on Saturday.

The owner of the vehicle noticed it was missing later that morning, but fortunately the vehicle had a GPS tracker, assisting with the location of its whereabouts. Police attempted to
intercept the vehicle near the border, however, the suspect allegedly drove at high speeds south along the Hume Freeway to avoid capture. Senior Constable Paul Groves of Wangaratta police said a Victoria Police chopper was deployed to provide aerial support and the road pursuit was terminated as the suspect entered a Benalla residential area.
“The suspect drove around several back roads in Benalla and it was not safe for road policing units to continue their pursuit at this time,” Sen Const Groves said. “He has then entered the southbound lane of the Hume Freeway via the off ramp and continued driving north against the direction traffic.” The dramatic pursuit
came to an end at about 12 noon when it’s believed the stolen vehicle ran out of fuel near Bowers Road at Winton. Despite three police units and the chopper in pursuit at this time, the man continued to try and evade capture by leaving the vehicle and running through paddocks until he was caught. Sen Const Groves said
the man was apprehended and taken to the Wangaratta Police Station for questioning. He said the accused was charged with offences relating to theft of motor vehicle, theft from motor vehicles, and dangerous driving. The accused was remanded in custody to appear at Benalla Magistrates Court tomorrow.
