“We are also continuing to work with the casual relief teacher (CRT)

agencies to ensure teachers are available in Victorian government schools across all areas of the state - including the establishment of a daily rate of travel, accommodation and meals for CRTs who relocate to work in rural Victoria,” the spokesman said.

“In just the first two weeks of the program, 15

teachers have already been deployed to schools in Shepparton, Wodonga and Wangaratta.”

A breakdown of how many teachers were deployed to Wangaratta was not available from the department.

A total of 250 incentives have been paid this financial year, with 70 per cent of the recipients

allocated to rural and regional schools.

To be eligible for the incentives on offer, CRTs are required to relocate from metropolitan Melbourne to regional Victoria for a minimum two-week period, and may work across multiple schools in that regional area.

A Support Your School Initiative team has also been

established to help schools source CRTs where they have exhausted all other avenues.

Tenielle Henderson, team leader - recruitment at anzuk.education, posted on the agency’s website this month that teachers could “earn up to $700 per day to teach in regional Victoria”.

A TRANSPORT b business i owner has admitted to failing to check the logbook of his employee ahead of a fatal head-on collision near Brimin in 2018, which claimed the lives of Bundalong locals Amanda Kilmister and 12-year-old son and Cathedral College Wangaratta student Harrison.

Appearing at Wangaratta Magistrates Court yesterday, the 53-year-old Koyuga man pleaded guilty to contravening his duty of care in eliminating public risk, after his employee was found to have routinely fabricated his work diary and worked while fatigued leading up to the November 2 collision.

Amanda’s husband Paul and young sons Austin and Morgan survived the crash, but spent significant amounts of time in Melbourne hospitals, with Paul placed in a near-two-month coma after suffering a traumatic brain injury and internal injuries in the collision.

Crown prosecutor Patrick Bourke said the accused had failed to execute an inquiry into the eligibility of Kenny to drive the route from Tongala to Wodonga, after Kenny was asked

“He didn’t do what his company procedures stated he should have done,” he said.

Mr Bourke admitted the accused had no way of knowing Kenny would utilise drugs while driving, but said a meeting with a safety officer only a matter of weeks before the incident should have seen it avoided. “(The accused) was wellequipped to exercise the duties he ought to have exercised,” he said.

Magistrate David Faram adjourned the matter for sentence on July 11.

A maximum sentence would see the accused fined up to $150,000.

The court heard Kenny was known to the accused, and had been driving consistently for another transport company, as well as assisting his father with transport activities while outside of work hours unbeknown to the accused in the lead up to the fatal incident.

On a number of occasions, Kenny was found to have fabricated his logbook in breach of National Heavy Vehicle Regulations, entering time and distance reports which did not align with his prime mover’s speed limit of 100kph.

Mental health boost for all our primary schools

The 27-strong brigade, set to operate under the guidance of new captain and long-time resident David Smith from July 1, have begun planning for a more mechanical-focused approach to establishing fuel breaks throughout Glenrowan, with slashing and mulching to be heavily utilised.

Mr Smith said crews had already begun identifying “strategic parcels” of land to be targeted by management strategies expected to take place between October and December to limit fuel growth.

“Mechanical fuel treatment is a strategy that you can use in all conditions - we’re focused on the reduction of fine fuels which contribute to the intensity of fires.

“The regional fuel management team has been looking to that for a while - it is easier, CFA organises it and then the work is undertaken by an external con-

The same regions were subject to just less than 100,000 hectares of planned burns during the same time frame.

However, CFA Wangaratta Group officer Lachie Gales said a changing culture dictated by increased regulations on roadside burning had necessitated brigades to target alternative land management avenues.

According to Mr Gales, an increased focus on protecting local flora, as well as the additional costs associated with roadside burning through mandatory traffic management, had meant brigades had been forced to adapt their strategies.

“Seasonal conditions affect your ability to use fire as a tool - there’s a very limited window of appropriate weather to do planned burning,” he said.

“There’s also the potential impact on sensitive flora - there may well be some native species we want to foster, but if there’s exotic

“We work closely with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) and also parts of our area align with Rural City of Wangaratta roadside management.”

FFMVic have previously led the region in non-burning treatments to establish fuel breaks, however, with the region expected to see significant growth due to extended periods of wet conditions in recent months, Glenrowan CFA crews will increase their efforts to ensure vital fuel management can be completed ahead of summer.

Under the region’s Joint Fuel Management Program (JFMP) released from 2020/21 to 2022/23, more than 4900 hectares of land was set to be subject to non-burning fuel treatment practices be-

“Over the last decade, we’ve seen a reduction in roadside burning - Eldorado, Springhurst, Glenrowan and other regions had active brigades who seasonally did a lot of roadside burning.

“These other activities such as spraying and mulching are not traditionally activities that brigades have been involved in they’re adapting.”

While some brigades have embraced alternative management solutions, Mr Gales said an increasing shift away from undertaking roadside burns would remove a valuable training opportunity for local CFA volunteers.

“The life of a CFA volunteer is not necessarily simple,” he said.

“There are a lot of learnings for our people in conducting controlled burns - we’re losing that little training ground.

“It’s been a very valuable place for building volunteers’ skills before they get to where it really counts.”

EVERY government and low-fee non-government primary school in Victoria will have a mental health and wellbeing leader employed by 2026, under a new State Government initiative.

A total of $200 million will be invested in the initiative, which will expand the Mental Health in Primary Schools program, and will be scaled up from next year to reach 1800 campuses - including those in the Wangaratta district - by 2026.

The leaders will help implement a whole-school approach to wellbeing, as well as supporting individual students, helping teachers better identify and support at-risk students, and building relationships and referral pathways to local mental health services.

“We’re making sure every Victorian child in Northern Victoria has access to safe, tailored care through their trusted school environment - giving them the care they need, when they need it, close to home,” Jaclyn Symes (MLC, Northern Victoria) said.

The initiative builds on a pilot with 100 schools, in partnership with the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the University of Melbourne, which saw more than 95 per cent of the mental health and wellbeing leaders involved say the model improved their school’s capacity to support students’ mental health and wellbeing needs.

Since the start of the trials, students have shown improved mental health and wellbeing, in addition to improved social, academic and vocational outcomes.

With half of all cases of anxiety, mood, impulse control and substance use disorders manifesting by the age of 14, research suggests students with mental health concerns are behind their peers in grade three, and fall further behind throughout their school lives.

“We know the earlier in life young Victorians get mental health support, the better their chances of staying happy and healthy throughout adulthood,” Minister for Education James Merlino said.

The State Government initiative is part of its response to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, which highlighted that schools play an important role in identifying children with mental health and wellbeing challenges who can then be referred to treatment, care and support if needed.

Corrections order served amid behavioural concerns A WANGARATTA man who repeatedly assaulted his fiancé in a number of alcohol-fueled incidents last year will be expected to undertake drug and alcohol treatment as part of an extensive corrections order.

The 24-year-old returned to Wangaratta Magistrates Court for sentence on Monday, after pleading guilty earlier this year to committing a series of unlawful assaults and criminal damage, including on the day of the pair’s engagement.

A summary previously read to the court by police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Liam Murdock detailed a history of family violence, which saw the accused in one incident last year throw a can of alcohol at the victim after she dropped the cans of rum while walking home.

The accused was also said to have pinned the victim by the arms and headbutted her after she refused to hug him upon his return from a drinking session with friends.

The victim was said to have suffered severe pain and bleeding from her lip following the assault.

In a text message conversation with his mother last August, the accused admitted to the headbutt, as well as throwing the victim’s phone on the floor after she moved a bag of boxed wine from the fridge while the accused drank with friends following the pair’s engagement.

Defence counsel Geoff Clancy had previously stated his client suffered from drug and alcohol dependence and had longstanding behavioural concerns.

In sentencing the defendant to serve an 18 month corrections order from Monday, Magistrate Ian Watkins said instances of family violence were of serious concern among the community.

“It’s behaviour you should be ashamed of - I hope it’s behaviour you wouldn’t have done had you been sober,” he said.

“In the home it’s simply not tolerated.”

The defendant will be expected to complete 80 hours of unpaid community work as part of the order, 40 of which can be attributed to drug, alcohol and mental health treatment.

Concerns around access to Myrrhee’s best vista A DECISION to construct a gate over what was thought to be a public road has caused consternation to a number of visitors and residents wanting to access a popular lookout in Myrrhee.

The gate was installed on the Bella Vista Road by the owner of Elevation 652 at Mount Bellevue about six months ago and while most maps indicate it’s across a through road, the owner says it is actually private property.

In a letter to the editor in today’s Chronicle, Melbourne-based correspondent Caroline Morgan said for many years she had made the trip up to Mount Bellevue to enjoy the 360 degree views from what she described as “one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Victoria.”

But on a recent trip, Ms Morgan said she was disappointed to find access was now restricted to paying guests staying at the private property, which spans over 1000 acres and offers self-contained holiday accommodation along with a variety of farming pursuits.

it’s such a spectacular spot - the awe of it brings me to my knees and to have it denied seems a mean spirited gesture,” she said.

“What about the school children who want to see it - where is the goodwill and community spirit?”

A local resident who contacted council about the matter said a natural asset had been taken from the community without its consultation.

He questioned whether it was possible to own a road, or to own a view, and said there were others in the community who had expressed their frustration and disappointment.

Rural City of Wangaratta director infrastructure services Marcus Goonan said while part of the Bella Vista Road is a council road, he believed the section where the gate was built, was not.

He said he had no concerns about restricted access to the road,

or to roads or properties located on the other side of the locked gate, and had not personally spoken to the owner.

“If there is a legal lease and tenure over a crown road reserve it has nothing to do with council, and council have and will maintain their roads in accordance with the road management plan,” he said.

A spokesperson from DELWP said it appeared the road had at some time deviated from the easement in a number places across its length, including onto sections of private property.

He said it was a quite common occurrence in undulating rural areas where unmade roads had been altered due to practicality, such as going around an obstacle or because of drainage or other issues.

Owner of Elevation 652 Phil Ross said he was informed by the former owner the road was private and was recently gated following a two-year occupational health and safety review at the property.

He said tractors and spray equipment were regularly used in the vineyard where the gate was

located, cattle were sometimes on the road, and they considered it simply too dangerous to have people wandering onto the property at any time.

“We wanted to do everything possible to keep the place safe,” he said.

Mr Ross said they have opened the gate on occasion to tourists who have pressed the buzzer and requested to access the property, but as they have also had shooters come on it, they chose to keep it closed most of the time.

He said there were occasionally weddings held on the site, and because maps had not been updated and still show it as a through road, despite there also being a gate on an adjacent property owned by Brown Brothers, people who had tried to drive through and become stuck.

“We’re just trying to keep it as safe as we can and keep people out who shouldn’t be in there,” he said.

“We want to be good citizens and let people through who genuinely want to have a look around and if they give us a call we’re more than happy to, at appropriate times.”

Kinder changes bring opportunities AN overhaul of early childhood education in Victoria represents “transformational change”, but also wide-ranging opportunities locally, according to North East Regional Pre School Association (NERPSA) manager Leigh Chadban.

The State Government announced late last week that it would invest $9 million over the next 10 years in its ‘Best Start, Best Life’ program, aiming to save families money and support women to return to the workforce.

It will expand the program with three new initiatives: making kinder free across the state from 2023; transitioning four-year-old kinder to a universal ‘pre-prep’ 30 hour a week play-based learning program; and establishing 50 government-

operated childcare centres.

The first changes will be seen next year, when families with three or four-year-olds will pay nothing for kinder, potentially saving them up to $2500 per child per year.

“These are big changes, but they just make sense - giving our kids the very best start in life and delivering early education and care that actually works for families,” Premier Daniel Andrews said.

The changes come as universal access to threeyear-old kinder is rolling out across Victoria, expanding the program to 15 hours of

NERPSA - which manages 14 early childcare services in Wangaratta, Glenrowan, Moyhu, Whitfield, Whorouly, Benalla and Chiltern - is currently offering five hours of three-year-old kinder in most of its services, which will be scaled up to 15 hours by 2029, when the universal access program will be operating Victoria-wide; Chiltern is already working with 15 hour weeks for three-year-olds.

This has required changes to infrastructure and staffing for the district, and Ms Chadban said further expansion would be needed as the shift was made to 30 hour

weeks for four-year-olds.

She said she expected more information to be forthcoming from the State Government in coming months as to how the program would evolve.

“It will require a lot of work, but I imagine it will be a staged rollout as the threeyear-old universal access program has been,” she said.

“We don’t know yet how many additional staff will be required, but initiatives around staffing, upskilling staff and provision of traineeships will all probably increase.”

Ms Chadban said NERPSA had planned for expected changes including approaching staff retirements,

but had not catered for the new program requirements in its succession planning.

“This is another level of planning that will be required,” she said.

However, she said within the association there was great scope for flexibility for staff in moving between services and arrangement of hours.

“We hope more people do consider taking up early childhood roles, as there is flexibility at the moment, and with these changes there will be even more opportunities,” she said.

The State Government will establish the Victorian Pre-Prep Taskforce in coming weeks, bringing together staff, unions, early child-

hood experts, local government, kinder and long day care providers and other stakeholders to help design the pre-prep curriculum and inform implementation of the program.

“Early education has the most profound impact on a child’s development, and moving to 30 hours of playbased learning when they’re four will give our littlest Victorians the best start, so they get the best opportunities in life,” Victorian Minister for Early Childhood Ingrid Stitt said.

“We know families are struggling with the cost of living, and free kinder will help make sure no child misses out on those vital early years.”

Cultural burns given green light LOCAL traditional owners have strengthened their ability to undertake cultural burns in the region, having completed an extensive fire training course aimed at enhancing wildfire suppression and fuel reduction burn skills.

Twelve representatives from the Bangerang and Duduroa Dhargal Aboriginal Corporations came together this month for a series of meetings initiated by the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA)

and Trust for Nature to ensure elders meet insurance and administrative requirements to undertake cultural burns.

The initiative gives attendees the same formal skills as a trained volunteer firefighter, allowing elders to conduct traditional burns on private and public land where applicable.

Often lit in spring and autumn when bush fuels are damper and weather is cooler, cultural burns have becoming a tool to assist government, local authorities

and private landholders in managing bushfire risk under changing climate conditions.

According to Bangerang elder Uncle Darren ‘Dozer’ Atkinson, the training program had gone a long way to promoting trust between local government and indigenous stakeholders.

“The small scale of the burns keeps the fires from getting really big and getting out of control, so they’re really low-risk,” he said.

“We really see cultural burning as an ideal way of

COMMUNICATIONS FAULT CAUSES HAVOC FOR V/LINE

By GUS RIDDER DISRUPTIONS have continued on the V/ Line network, with a communications fault cancelling dozens of services during the morning peak on Wednesday.

This is the third time in five weeks the network has come to a standstill during peak travel times.

According to V/Line, the fault affected the way train controllers communicate with train drivers.

BUSINESS operators and staff in the Rural City of Wangaratta are strongly encouraged to come along to a free event next Wednesday with former Australian Comic of the Year Marty Wilson who will talk about strategies to start fresh after a difficult two years.

Marty celebrated his 25th anniversary since his first stand-up comedy act yesterday, but these days he combines comedy with keynote speaking and at the event he will draw on the experiences of 1000 inspirational people he has interviewed and pass on their secrets of their success.

He has a brilliant knack in extracting the lessons to be learnt from interviewing these people and using them to get across key messages that people can take home on the night.

Starting as a stand-up comedian, a job that lasted for eight years, Marty found laughter can be the best tonic for getting through stress and coming out the other side.

His career in keynote speaking began off the back of his book series ‘What I wish I knew’ and it was

Marty said it’s times like when you get dumped in the deep end and your previous life experience hasn’t prepared you for where you need to go and who you need to be.

Local business operators and staff are invited to register for the free seminar and Marty cited his throwaway line is ‘your business can’t be resilient until your people are’.

He put out a message to

business operators or their people who feel depleted.

“It’s that metaphor about when after a bushfire goes through the trees are still standing, the shape of them are still the same but they’re these burnt out husks that if you leant on them they would just fall over,” he said.

“If you wouldn’t mind some concrete strategies that you can take away and implement in your business

or you know some people who might benefit, bring them along for a night that will be bloody good fun.”

The business networking event will allow people to share and discuss the business impact of COVID, prepare for business in a COVID normal setting, and go into the draw to win business support packages.

Teacher influx a vital initiative THE new initiative to incentivise casual relief teachers (CRTs) to make short–term moves to the region to support a dwindling workforce amid COVID–19 and flu absences will be vital to minimising further education disruptions to our impressionable students.

Staff shortages have become a regular occurrence among many of the region‘s workforces in recent times, with industries suffering from lasting COVID–19 hangovers.

Pressures are increasingly being felt throughout industries such as agriculture, hospitality and healthcare locally, with many established sectors experiencing a widespread worker exodus in the immediate aftermath of a grueling pandemic period.

Students and teachers were forced to adapt to online learning for large parts of the last two years, but with schools now returning to purely in–classroom learning, it‘s vital that in the event of a teacher absence, the learning capabilities of students are impacted as little as possible.

The influx of CRTs from metropolitan areas will also allow teachers to feel more comfortable in taking important health breaks, to ensure they remain in the sector for longer.

In a vacuum, the move to provide these short–term employees with a $300 per day allowance on top of regular pay checks could appear to favour teachers who elect to live in metropolitan Victoria.

However, the initiative exists among a series of other long–term commitments to increase teacher populations in regional Victoria, and will help to ensure the important learning needs of local children can continue to be addressed in their entirety.

Without an adequate number of teachers, shortages in other industries will only become a self–fulfilling prophecy.

It’s time for PM to help free Julian Assange IT is a relief to learn that Attorney General, Mark Dreyfus, and other politicians, are championing the cause of Julian Assange’s fight for freedom.

Chelsea Manning, the intelligence analyst who leaked classified information, revealing US war crimes, has been pardoned and had her 35-year sentence commuted by the US government.

In shocking contrast, Julian Assange continues to be imprisoned and tortured for publishing this same information.

And if he is extradited to the United States he faces a lifetime in prison under very harsh conditions.

What message does this send to journalists who value truth and justice?

A very alarming one indeed.

It is shocking that the previous government seems to have taken no meaningful action regarding Julian Assange’s plight.

He has already paid too high a price for his courageous journalism and should be freed and welcomed back to Australia immediately.

I HAVE been visiting the Myrrhee Valley near Benalla for many years and it’s a beautiful part of the world.

On many occasions, we’ve made a special trip up to Mount Bellevue to enjoy the spectacular 360 degree view from the summit.

I was dismayed to find on a recent trip that the way is now blocked by the landowner, denying access for locals and visitors to one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Victoria.

AT THE MOVIES: A group of 25 people enjoyed watching some of Australia’s best youth-made short films in a screening at the GOTAFE Auditorium on Friday. Rural City of Wangaratta youth development officer Rachel Harrop said the short films, created for the Nextwave national youth film program, were outstanding and showcased the cleverness and creativity of young people.

This puts more traffic pressure on our already poor road conditions without any upgrading or maintenance undertaken.

We now see all repairs to cabled barriers on the Hume Freeway coming out of the same small bucket of money that is meant for country roads.

Just today (Wednesday) I witnessed seven trucks and a couple of 4WD vehicles with obviously one employee per vehicle repairing a small section of road on the freeway between Wangaratta and Benalla.

This must have been a huge cost as they were there for four hours that I witnessed and probably took all day.

We also have other roads that used to be maintained by local shire councils but when they were amalgamated the new councils largely wiped their hands of many roads that were not on their road register; and it is extremely difficult to get them back on so they can be maintained.

Even though I am not religious, I have one of these roads bordering my rated property called Taggarts Lane and I am relying on God to keep this road in a state that allows myself and my contractors to access other properties and my business as a farm.

All geared up for Strictly Quilts 2022 FINAL preparations are under for the Strictly Quilts exhibition which opens at St Bernard’s Primary School hall next week.

The annual exhibition showcases the talents of members of the different quilting groups located within the Rural City of Wangaratta, in what will be the fourteenth instalment of the event.

Guest speakers on opening night will be well known local quilters Shelley Kelley and Jan Manglesdorf from Skellywags Sewing School in Barnawartha.

They will also exhibit a selection of their unique quilts.

Jan said she has always been interested in sewing and was taught dressmaking by her mother.

While she sewed regularly for her family, her first official class in patchwork was in the mid-eighties which began a foray into quilting.

“I like using textiles with unusual retro patterns and now I also like modern fabrics,” she said.

“I still get inspiration from old style quilts and vintage fabrics and I like to do the old traditional style, but using some funky, modern fabrics, using a machine to piece my quilts.”

Jan said she can’t imagine what it would be like to not work with textiles, finding it a wonderful creative outlet and one she loves to share with others.

“I enjoy teaching people and really love it when ‘they get it’,” she said.

“You show them something and they go off and do it in their own way - you feel like you have actually helped them along their way.

“I don’t believe there is a right and wrong way to do things - you are supposed to be enjoying the process.

“There are no quilt police here - we are not perfectionists in what we do - the fabric and ideas often lead the journey for each creation.”

Visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to see some of Jan’s quilts and also to win a quilt donated by the Centre Quilter’s Circle, with other prizes donated from My Little Patch and Saturday Quilters.

The Strictly Quilts exhibition will run from Friday, July 1 to Sunday, July 10 and open from 10am until 4pm with entry $5.

An opening celebration will be held on the Friday night from 7.30pm.

ACTU slams RBA wage growth view

AUSTRALIA’S peak union body, the ACTU, believes the Reserve Bank of Australia is living in a “fantasy land” when it comes to wages growth.

RBA governor Philip Lowe told an event this week that a steady state of wage growth should be about 3.5 per cent, including one per cent labour productivity.

He expects inflation to reach seven per cent this year.

While not commenting directly on the Fair Work Commission’s decision to award low-wage earners a 5.2 per

cent increase this year, Dr Lowe said there could be larger wage increases in some parts of the labour market for a short period of time.

“But if wage increases become common in the four and five per cent range, then it is going to be harder to return inflation to 2.5 per cent,” he said.

However, Dr Lowe has been concerned for a number of years that the rate of wage growth in the two to 2.5 per cent range was too low.

ACTU secretary Sally McManus says the RBA governor has “weirdly changed his tune”.

“To think somehow the system is going to deliver across-the-board pay increases of five or seven per cent is ... fantasy land,” she told ABC radio on Thursday.

The wage price index, which gauges annual wage growth across the country, currently sits at 2.4 per cent as of the March quarter.

Ms McManus said workers had been told they would get a pay rise when productivity increased, or when unemployment was low, or when profits were up and companies were doing well, but in each case they hadn’t.

“This has to do with a much bigger problem we have got as a country, not related to this year’s inflation spike,” she said.

“Current inflation has nothing to do with wages.”

Ms McManus said the RBA governor “isn’t quite in touch with reality” and was running a board that didn’t have anyone who participated in negotiations for wages or the wage-setting system from the workers’ side.

“That’s a pretty big problem if you are making assumptions, trying to understand, trying to analyse how

things work,” she said.

“They absolutely have, in my view, very little idea how things work. They don’t understand what happens at the bargaining table.”

Treasurer Jim Chalmers will soon announce details of a review of the operations of the RBA, an inquiry that was backed by the previous coalition government.

Opposition frontbencher Karen Andrews said while some people are really struggling with cost-of-living pressures, such as rising electricity and fuel prices, businesses cannot afford a wages spiral.

Ms Andrews would like to see the ACTU work closely with businesses “It’s all well and good to argue for higher pay and conditions, and we do want to make sure that we are a country that is providing high wages and conditions to people, but the balance has to be there,” she told Sky News.

“If we force up wages and conditions, then businesses are going to have to look at what they have to do ... to make sure that there’s ongoing employment.”

Qld mulls taxes on tourists and park visitors TOURISTS and national park visitors would pay nex taxes in Queensland under a proposal being considered by the state government.

The two taxes have been proposed by a new 10-year tourism plan released by Queensland’s expert Tourism Industry Reference Panel.

It says the tax on tourists would be imposed by local governments, with all the income used to invest in tourism devel-

opment and marketing.

The second tax on national park and protected area visitors would be used to fund park running costs and reinvest in those natural attractions.

“The idea of a visitor levy is not new. It has been modelled, canvassed and debated for the best part of a decade,” the panel’s report says.

“While we appreciate that views are polarised as to whether it is an appropriate way to raise funding,

everyone we spoke with saw a greater need than ever for increased funding during the COVID‑19 recovery period.”

The report says the Canadian province of British Columbia has allowed tourist regions, such as the winter skiing and summer hiking resort of Whistler, to impose a similar visitor tax for 30 years.

This has provided sustainable funding needed to “promote, improve and enhance the otherwise

The Age newspaper has reported unvaccinated teachers will be back in classrooms in Victoria next week, and parents will not have the right to take their children out of school because their teacher is not vaccinated.

Mr Clare acknowledged the teacher shortage issue was broader, with fewer young people entering the teaching profession and baby boomer

teachers retiring soon.

He said he would also be working with universities on a post-pandemic “reset”.

“I recognise that our universities did incredible things ... coming up with the research and the discoveries that helped us to get through this pandemic.

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe welcomed the panel’s report, saying it the state needed have a bold vision or risk being left behind.

He said the government was considering all the recommendations, including the taxes.

“Some of the recommendations are ambitious and will need further consideration and consultation with the tourism industry,” he said.

Vic quarantine site could house refugees MELBOURNE’S purposebuilt quarantine facility could house hundreds of refugees fleeing war-torn Afghanistan and Ukraine.

The Victorian government is in discussions with federal authorities about using the newly built $200 million Centre for National Resilience at Mickleham in Melbourne’s north.

The 500-bed site, built by the Commonwealth and operated by the state, was opened in February and initially housed unvaccinated international travellers before the seven-day quarantine requirement was dumped.

Authorities are considering

alternative uses for the centre, including housing the balance of about 500 refugees from Afghanistan and about 200 from Ukraine, Premier Daniel Andrews said.

“There’s active work being done to see whether Mickleham, of course in partnership with the Commonwealth and other service providers, might well be the perfect place to provide those people with the resettlement that they need,” he told reporters on Thursday.

“It’s obviously a facility that could be used for lots of different things. I don’t know how long they’d be there for.”

Mr Andrews said he was

briefed on the plan by his department secretary on Wednesday.

The facility was worth building despite international arrivals to Australia no longer needing to quarantine, the premier said.

“That facility is in some respects a bit of an insurance policy,” he said.

“If we had that facility (earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic), we would have used it. Next time we need it, we’ll use it, and in the intervening period it’ll be made use of in lots of different ways: floods, fires, all sorts of different things.”

Zonta is ramping up fundraising

AN influx of community donations has facilitated the purchase of 12 new mattresses to provide guests experiencing hardship with a good night’s sleep at the Wangaratta Night Shelter.

Now in its fourth year providing support to local individuals at risk of experiencing homelessness, the night shelter will be bolstered by the addition of brand-new camping mattresses to replace the second-hand donated mattresses in use since the initiative’s inception.

Purchased through a community-layby initiative established at Adventure Camping and Fishing, which allowed community members to donate funds toward their purchase, the new lightweight mattresses will be unfurled at temporary shelter sites throughout the rural city during the winter months.

Member of the Wangaratta Night Shelter team Di Duursma said the community had continued its history of banding together to support the local homelessness initiative.

“We could not do this without community support,” she said.

“It’s looking after our volunteers - they’re quite light mattresses so it helps the volunteers to get the gear in

ON THE GO: With upturned bill and orange wing panels, the Varied Sittella is a distinctive and energetic little inhabitant of our bushland.

ADAPTION in birds is shown in many ways - plumage colour, overall size and shape, leg type and beak structure.

The Varied Sittella is a classic example of a bird well-suited to its environment by having special adaptations, namely their slightly upturned bill.

This enables these little birds to forage in a way different to any other species.

Like treecreepers, they forage on bark on the tree trunks and branches, but rather than climbing upwards, sittellas climb down the trunk headfirst, commonly in a spiraling or zig-zag fashion, pausing momentarily to glean insects from the surface or probe into crevices and under flaking bark in search of food.

At times, they may flicker one or both wings, most likely to scare potential prey items into moving, enabling them to be detected and subsequently eaten.

Once a bird reaches the bottom of a trunk or branch, it either flies or hops

briskly to a nearby substrate to repeat this characteristic foraging procedure.

Varied Sittellas are always found in trees, typically in eucalypt or nativepine forests and woodlands where they favour rough-barked trees as a feeding surface.

They usually occur in family parties of three to 12 birds, maintaining contact with other by giving a distinctive high-pitched twitter.

At times, however, they become so engrossed with foraging that they remain rather quiet, potentially going unnoticed.

They often form part of a mixed flock with other insect-eating birds, such as thornbills, robins and fantails, especially during the autumn-winter months.

Here, they maintain their usual foraging habits and specialise on bark foraging, co-existing happily with other species which also remain within their preferred niche.

During the breeding season in

spring, sittellas remain in their highly social family groups, with all members joining in building a nest.

A sittella’s nest is a beautiful structure built in a small fork in the top half of a tree with materials such as bark and fine twigs and bound together with cobwebs.

The birds then carefully camouflage the nest with lichen and bark flakes, making it incredibly difficult to see.

All birds in the group feed the incubating female and young in the nest once they hatch.

So diligent are the family members in carrying out their family duties that they form queues along a branch as they wait their turn to visit the nest.

This behaviour often brings attention to the nest and as such, many fail due to predation by watchful birds such as ravens, currawongs and butcherbirds.

Locally, Varied Sittellas can be found in most larger areas of forests and woodland, especially the Warby Ranges and Killawarra forest, the Chiltern-Beechworth forests and in well-treed farmland areas.

They are resident and can be found year-round.

HEN Tanya Grant heard that Justin Bieber had been forced to cancel a series of concerts this month after being diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, her heart went out to the young pop star.

The Wangaratta resident knows the tough road the Canadian singer may have ahead of him, as she is still feeling the effects of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, five years on from her own diagnosis.

“I definitely felt for him; no-one would wish something like this on someone else,” she said.

While wishing him well in his recovery, what Tanya and others hope is that Bieber’s discussion of his condition will raise awareness and understanding of the rare neurological disorder.

Caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is characterised by paralysis of the facial nerve and a rash affecting the ear or mouth; in addition to facial paresis/ palsy, it can cause vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, ear pain and headaches.

Several of these symptoms have been part of life in recent years for Tanya, who knew nothing of the condition when she contracted it in mid-2017, first experiencing a “hot,

itchy” ear while driving home from a work trip.

“I scratched my ear, and it felt like little bubbles, like I’d been sunburnt, which was strange because it was June, so I stopped at the chemist and got some cream for it,” she said.

“That night, I woke up with terrible ear pain, and found I couldn’t touch or lie on my ear. I’ve never had ear infections before, so assumed it was something like that.

“I rang Nurse On Call, and they suggested I go to the doctor; by the next day, my ear was swollen, and the GP had a look, took my temperature and also thought it was a bad ear infection, but said it could get worse, and if it did, I should go to the emergency department (ED) for stronger painkillers.”

The pain did get worse, and Tanya was also experiencing constant nausea, so she took the trip to the ED and received pain relief and anti-nausea medication, with a swab requested as a precaution.

“The next morning

when I woke up, the whole left side of my face had dropped; I couldn’t lift my eyebrow, I couldn’t chew, I couldn’t smile, I couldn’t even sniff on that side,” she said.

“Before I had time to process all that, I had an urgent phone call from my doctor to come in, and I was told I had Ramsay Hunt Syndrome; I’d never heard of it, and the doctor hadn’t either.”

hile many people diagnosed with the syndrome experience a rash on their face or ear, it wasn’t until Tanya saw an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist that she found she had blisters in her ear.

In addition to the pain and facial paralysis, the condition affected her balance: “I couldn’t walk straight, and I also had to wear a patch because my left eye was permanently open.

“I never let my mind go to ‘stroke’, but for people who saw me, I’m sure that’s what they were thinking. I was very conscious of how I looked because I didn’t want to alarm people.

“I’ve been lucky that I have never been that sick; hearing the word ‘syndrome’ scared me,

because you hear that and you think this is something long-term.”

Eager to give herself the best possible chance of recovery, Tanya saw the ENT and an eye specialist, and also explored allied health options.

“Everyone I went to see just went above and beyond; I saw two different types of physiotherapists - for my face, and to learn to walk again - and an osteopath to help with cranial massage,” she said.

Tanya said she “hadn’t been feeling overly stressed or that life was particularly difficult” at the time of her diagnosis, but when she looked back on that period, she felt the onset of Ramsay Hunt was “like your body telling you to slow down”.

“You are so exhausted with this thing, that you have no other choice,” she said.

Tanya said she felt blessed to have had strong support from family, friends, health professionals and her employer.

“I was only able to work short days, and a couple of days a week, and still can’t work full-time,” she said.

While her recovery has been strong and steady, Tanya said it required constant maintenance.

“Cold weather affects the

nerves, so it can bring the pain back; everything is a bit more difficult in winter, so on bitter days I’ve got to make sure I’m rugged up and take extra self-care,” she said.

“I still notice that my mouth and eye will drop if I’m tired, my sight is not what it was and my speech is not as clear on some days; the left side of my face is affected, however the balance shows on the right.

Really, unless you know me well, you probably wouldn’t notice those things.

“It’s definitely made me understand how incredible our bodies are, and what a difference it makes to have a positive outlook, as well as having people around you to support you.

“My best advice I was given was to keep challenging myself. Apart from the fundraising aspect, that’s why my husband and I did (Wangaratta YMCA’s) Dancing With the Mastars (in December, 2017) - to push my balance. It was hard, as I worried about falling over, but it was worth it. I was so proud of us.”

Tanya has taken to yoga as a means of maintaining her balance, and her latest challenge is learning standup paddle boarding.

“I’ve very much gone

from being someone who thinks physical activity has to be just sweating it out, to trying lots of different options,” she said.

“I’m listening to my body more; sometimes these things are a bit of a wake-up call, and your body’s way of saying, ‘Are you doing what you’re meant to be doing and living life the way you want to?’.

“And I’m very lucky that I have recovered so well; for some people who get this, it is horrendous, and some people live every day as I did at the start.”

eing part of online support groups has also been beneficial to Tanya’s recovery.

“Like with anything in life, talking to someone who has experienced the same thing always helps,” she said.

“I’d encourage people to always ask for help, get advice on a range of things and to ask, ‘What can I do to be helping myself?’”

She hopes Justin Bieber experiences the same level of recovery, but says it may take time.

“I’m off all pain medication now, but it took a good couple of years; I’ve been very, very lucky,” she said.

Teen’s 100km ride to raise funds for NHW’s Special Care Nursery

COBRAM teenager Emily Davies is giving back to Northeast Health Wangaratta’s Special Care Nursery with a fundraising 100km ride from her home to Wangaratta next Monday.

As a newborn, Emily was transported to the nursery following an emergency caesarian as a result of being born seven weeks premature, weighing less than 1400 grams and having stopped growing at the 27 week point.

Her family was overwhelmed by the quality of care they received from the nursery, and this ride is an opportunity to help “pay back” that care.

“NHW really saved my wife and daughter’s life,” said Emily’s father, Michael Davies.

“From the word go, we were blown away with the care and assistance we received.

“Emily is very much aware of the care she received and wanted to give back.”

The 13 year old has gone from strength to strength in life and has recently gained a spot on the Victorian state triathlon team.

athlons for the past two years,” she said.

“During primary school I focused on swimming and running, however I discovered a love of triathlons and have since taken up cycling too.”

Emily has started her fundraiser, ‘Em’s Pedal for Prems’, and as part of a fundraising initiative, decided to ride 100km from Cobram to Wangaratta alongside her two friends Brian Nelson and Adam Burbidge.

“The distance seemed difficult, yet an achievable challenge,” she said.

Emily said a lot of planning has gone into her fundraiser, with Dad Michael helping find the safest route for her to travel.

She has already raised over $3500 and is hopeful of achieving her goal of $5000.

“I am thrilled with the amount

of money raised so far,” she said.

“I have received some lovely messages from midwives and nurses who work at the hospital.

“They have explained that the funds will provide some muchneeded equipment in the Special Care Nursery, which makes me incredibly happy.”

Emily would like to thank her grandparents and parents for all of their help, her friends Adam and Brian, as well as all the “incredible people who have generously donated in support of this wonderful regional hospital”.

Nationals commit to investment ahead of election THE National Party if elected in November has committed to spending 25 per cent of all state capital investment in regional areas, primarily focusing on regional roads.

Wangaratta-based Ovens Valley MP, Tim McCurdy, said over the last couple of years the capital expenditure in the country has been 13 per cent and 11 per cent respectively, and this is despite the regions having 25 per cent of the

population of the state.

“All one has to do is drive from Melbourne to our smaller country towns to see the inequality in our roads and lack of investment,” he said.

Mr McCurdy said instead of a major investment in country roads in the state budget, there had been a $24 million dollar reduction for Road Asset Maintenance.

“This is just not good enough, it’s time we give our regional towns the opportunity to rebuild

and recover,” he said.

Mr McCurdy claims the Victorian Labor Government has slashed more than $214 million from the roads maintenance budget over the past two years.

“Regional Victorians deserve their fair share of funding for our infrastructure,” he said.

“That is why the Nationals and Liberals have committed to the restoration of the Country Roads and Bridges Program

in government, ensuring that regional road maintenance and upgrades are properly funded.

“This is a common-sense approach that will increase the safety of driving on country roads and ensure that places like the Ovens Valley have the infrastructure to support the growth of population and industry.

Volunteers sought to open the books on Australian history

By GRAHAM CLEMENTS SINCE 2009, Trove has been making recorded history easier to find online.

Volunteers have been accurately transcribing text from scanned historical newspapers, magazines, books and journals that can then be searched by the Trove search engine.

Trove contains 35,000 fully digitised books and approximately 51,000 magazines and journals.

Dr Marie-Louise Ayres is the director-general of the National Library of Australia which hosts Trove.

“Trove has made it easier

for all Australians to learn more about our history, our families and our towns,” Dr Ayres said.

When the documents are scanned into Trove, a computer attempts to accurately transcribe the text of the document.

Often the scanned text is faded so the computer has made its best guess at what the document said, which can be inaccurate.

This is where volunteers come in; they go through the computer’s transcriptions and correct them.

In May 2019 the Wangaratta library started a group to help transcribe 200 Victo-

volunteers, helped at the initial meeting to teach people about using Trove.

She had already been volunteering for a couple of years and still does.

She especially enjoys fixing up the transcriptions of articles about Whorouly.

“Lots of articles involve family members,” she said.

“Because I am familiar with names of locals it helps me understand the items.

“I also enjoyed looking up my father who grew up in Bacchus Marsh.

“I found lots of reports of his activities from the school he attended.

“I volunteer because I like

editing, when I see an error I jump in and fix it.

“Volunteering for Trove is for people who are curious and like the idea of editing.

“If you don’t have a computer or internet at home, you can do it at the local library.”

She said the instructions of how to edit on Trove are simple to follow.

Trove currently has over five million images of magazines, newsletters and books available for volunteers to transcribe.

Colourful mural for kinder CHRISTOPHER Robin Kindergarten was fortunate to secure a community grant last year from Regional Arts Victoria which has led to a stunning mural for all to enjoy.

This funding supported Christopher Robin Kindergarten to engage and support local artist Lisa Bishop to paint a mural of native flora and fauna on an outside wall at the kindergarten.

The mural displays images of local birdlife, animals and native fauna found in the surrounding area.

Being surrounded by native bush on one side of the kindergarten means there is an abundance of local wildlife to include.

Within the mural are touches of the Warby Ranges and the King River also features in the artwork.

“The mural will encourage a strong sense of local

identity among the children and families attending Christopher Robin Kindergarten, while the public location of the kindergarten will bring art to the community and create a visual spectacle putting Wangaratta on the creative map,” Tania Piscioneri, early childhood teacher, said.

The Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund is provided through Regional Arts Australia administered in Victoria by Regional Arts Victoria.

Bergin family celebrated second reunion since 2007 WHAT a celebration for the Bergin family held on Sunday, June 12.

Almost 80 descendants of Tom and Jean Bergin travelled from Perth, Bundaberg, Canberra, Melbourne, Bendigo, and many parts of North East Victoria for a reunion at Peechelba Community Centre, a wonderful, warm and comfortable facility for this event according to Di Boag.

Four surviving “Bergin girls”, sisters Win Barry (91), Margaret McCauley (90) and Eileen LeFoe (88) thoroughly enjoyed the day, while Pat Nish (93) was recuperating in hospital after a recent fall.

Di said the original Bergin family emigrated from Ireland in 1855, settling at Thoona in “the spring of 1874” with other connecting families from Boorhaman, Warrenbayne and Euroa areas.

“There was lots of chatting, laugh-

ter and catching up with cousins sharing past memories and sharing of family events,” she said.

“A delicious barbecue was supplied with salads, sharing platters and afternoon tea slices made by our local families.”

Margaret, Eileen and Win jointly cut the large and colourfully decorated ‘Reunion Cake’, which was made and donated by Paul McCauley, a Bergin descendant, from his bakery at Broadford.

Family history/genealogy charts and printouts of descendants and ancestors of John and Margaret Bergin were readily available to anyone interested at the reunion and hundreds of photos with up to eight generations were on display.

This was the second reunion, the original one was held back in 2007 and was very special for the four sisters and all the extended families.

VOLUNTEER drivers are needed to boost the evolving transport needs of Rural City of Wangaratta residents, as Community Accessability endeavours to meet demand among vulnerable community members.

The volunteer-supported community service provides vital transport for older individuals, those living with disabilities and people who face difficulties accessing other forms of transport, with a fleet of accessible vehicles catering to a range of client needs.

“Volunteers play a vital role at Community Accessability, and we are always in need of caring, compassionate volunteers to help carry out our mission,” volunteer coordinator Jen Hay said.

“Wheelchair accessible vehicles provide a much-needed service within our community, as-

Grant helps students go native at school

By KURT HICKLING WANGARATTA Primary School is helping grow the next generation of environmental champions after being named a recipient of a $1000 Woolworths junior Landcare grant.

The funding has now allowed planning to go ahead for a new native garden stretching over 50 metres on the Faithful Street side of the school.

It will give a facelift to the site creating a garden with native plants and trees that are local to the Wangaratta area.

School principal, Jacinta Kubeil, is excited about the new project and cannot wait to see what the final results look like.

“Students and teachers will plan to create a native garden that represents native habitat and sustainability,” she said.

Equipment grants for sporting clubs THE State Government is giving community sport clubs a chance to win grants for new uniforms and equipment, training, and club development.

Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence, said applications are now open for the latest round of the Sporting Club Grants Program.

"Sporting clubs are the social fabric of communities and that’s why we’re backing them with funding for uniforms and equipment,” she said.

Clubs can apply for grants of up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $5000 for training coaches, officials and volunteers, and up to $5000 to better club operations.

The program is part of the State Government‘s work to make community sport accessible and inclusive.

Ban helps ‘strike a balance’

ALPINE Shire Council believes alcohol restrictions in public places at Bright’s Iconic Rod Run will help mitigate any risk associated with the event and the expected influx in classic cars and drivers.

Councillors this month unanimously supported restrictions staying in place for the return of the event in November.

“As with all events, we

will work with rod run organisers and local businesses to ensure this year’s event is fun, family-friendly and safe for communities and visitors,” mayor Sarah Nicholas said.

In 2021 the footprint for alcohol restrictions was reduced to within the confines of the Bright CBD and Pioneer Park, after a request by the Bright Rod and Kustom Club.

$20,000 state boost for fresh approach to Alpine sustainability

“Council supports the reduced footprint for this year’s event, which strikes a balance between safety and practicality,” Cr Nicholas said.

The mayor said council is looking forward to the first uninterrupted events season since the start of COVID. “Despite the considerable restrictions brought about

by COVID lockdowns, council and the community have

hosted more than 55 events since Christmas, which is a terrific step towards recovery,” she said.

“Bright’s Iconic Rod Run is a premier event for the region, showcasing our fabulous local scenery and bringing in thousands of visitors with their classic cars.”

Alcohol restrictions will be in place in public areas in the Bright township from

Top Aussie Dylan inspires Alpine residents

By MARTIN DAVIS ALPINE Shire Council has received a $20,000 State Government grant, which it will match with a $10,000 in-kind contribution, to help boost jobs, reduce waste, increase recycling and discover new economic opportunities.

Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said Alpine Shire is among 30 councils in the state being supported to help with fresh ideas on reducing waste while protecting the environment and creating jobs for the local community.

Alpine Shire mayor Sarah Nicholas said the funding from the government’s Recycling Victoria Councils Fund will be used to carry out a feasibility study into establishing a reuse shop at any or all of its three transfer stations.

“Sustainability comes in many forms, and this is an exciting project that could help our communities divert material from landfill and save money as well as provide an avenue for creativity and innovation,” she said.

Cr Nicholas said reuse shops would help extend the life of products and materials.

“The funding will allow us to investigate various business models, including the infrastructure required and the ongoing costs of various possibilities.

“It will be fantastic to see what our options are.”

“In 2021 council adopted an Access and Inclusion Plan, outlining our commitment to support the organisation and broader community to become more inclusive and accessible for people with disability,” said mayor Sarah Nicholas.

“We’re working to factor access and inclusion into our day-to-day operations, capital works and maintenance schedules, ensuring that people with disability are valued and supported.”

Dylan’s visit was jointly funded by the Victorian and Commonwealth government under the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Passion for retail fashion has business owner Amy up for national youth award ONE of Myrtleford’s young business owners is one of five finalist vying for the Young Rural Business of the Year Award at tonight’s Australian Rural Business Awards.

Elkemi owner Amy Rodgers took over the Myrtleford–based business in May last year, which she said was a dream come true to own a business in her community.

“I worked here for four years before taking over the business and I absolutely loved it,” the 20-year-old said.

“It was my passion to own a business and since

Volunteer lifeline for Myrtleford Festival

THE Myrtleford Festival will go on, much to the delight of locals and existing committee members after 12 new faces joined the ranks to get it up and running.

The event, held each year over the Labour Day long weekend, was in danger of shutting down completely last week after only a small number of people showed up for the annual general meeting, but this Monday night saw a positive turn as 17 people showed their support.

Festival secretary Melanie Dymond said she was “rapt”

“Monday night’s meeting was a great round table discussion about the festival, everyone spoke about their own skills sets and what they can bring to the group, we held our AGM and appointed Belinda Ramia as president and organised our first official meeting.

“I was just rapt with how it went, you can’t imagine how much easier it is to make this festival happen with more people to help out.”

Ms Dymond said she’s looking forward to hearing some fresh ideas and sug-

“It was a very positive meeting; we had 12 new volunteers for our committee, on top of our existing five people, which is fantastic,” she said yesterday morning.

“I also had multiple people reach out to say they couldn’t come along on the night but are happy to help out which is great.

“It’s a real mix of people too; some who have been in town for just five or so years and others who were born and bred here who moved away and came back in the

“We’re trying to push the point that just because we’ve done certain things in the past, they don’t have to be done today; it’s a moving thing,” she said.

“Our key events will remain though, as they’re much loved.

“There was a lot of discussion around the meaning of the festival; in the past it was the timber, hops and tobacco festival where they celebrated that harvest and I’ve had comments from others about how the festival has no meaning or purpose now.

“So we wanted to give it one and after lots of going around we came up with an idea based on our town logo; love the life.

“We think that’s our biggest thing we offer; that we have an amazing lifestyle here in Myrtleford so we’ll look into ‘Love the Life’ as a potential theme.

“Because the festival hasn’t run for two years it’s a prime opportunity to review what we’ve been doing, what has worked and what we can afford because it really is a lot of money to put festivals on but overall it was a very positive night.”

BRIGHT police are investigating four vehicle break–ins and subsequent theft of around $20,000 worth of tools last week.

The vehicles were parked in Bright and Porepunkah and targeted in the late hours of Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll of Bright police said the offences come in the wake of multiple vehicles having been stolen recently because people were leaving their keys in the ignition.

He urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are locked at night and if possible, park them under movement–activated lights.

“Tradies and everyone really should be making sure their vehicles are parked in a safe place and locked just like you do with your house so we can try and prevent these thefts,” he said.

“A lot of these opportunistic people will come with torches and if the car or house is locked, they will move on to the next one.”

Two museums share in almost $300,000 of state funding

IT’S ALL OPEN AT FALLS FALLS Creek opened all its skiable terrain at the resort from last Saturday, much to the enjoyment of thousands of visitors over the weekend.

The resort has had more than 140cms of snow so far this season, and with more forecast each day into next week, there are hopes the current snow depth of 80cms move back up to the magical metre.

Hotham has most if its skiable terrain open and is also expecting fresh snowfalls into next week.

Both resorts are expecting bumper school holiday crowds from this weekend.

THE State Government will spend almost $300,000 to support museum improvements in Beechworth and Benalla.

The Burke Museum and Beechworth Historic Precinct have been granted $89,900 to help enhance the museum‘s collections display, and bolster security outcomes by installing CCTV throughout the precinct.

Benalla Historical Society Inc. has received $201,421 to undertake a complete reorganisation and fit out of collection storage and display areas of the Benalla Costume and Kelly Museum through upgrades to gallery lighting, showcases, and storage solutions to deliver a safer environment for collection management activities, and enhanced visitor access to collections and exhibitions.

The grants were part of $4 million provided through the Regional Collections Access Program initiative supporting 36 museums, galleries and cultural organisations, funding capital works to enable them to attract touring exhibitions, borrow and display prominent artworks and better care for their collections.

Minister for Creative Industries, Danny Pearson, said the funding “means more visitors and stronger futures for much– loved institutions with flow–on benefits for local businesses in regional areas”.

BUSINESS leaders in the Alpine region say the minimum wage increase is a fair response to rising costs of living, but is yet another pressure on local business.

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) handed down its decision in the annual wage review last Wednesday, granting a 5.2 per cent increase to the national minimum wage.

Minimum award wages will increase by 4.6 per cent, which is subject to a minimum increase for award classifications of $40 per week, based on a 38-hour week for a full-time employee.

President of the Mt Beauty and District Chamber of Commerce, Glenys Peacock, suggested the increase could boost the economy, by increasing discretionary spending, and assist people with living costs.

“I’m not surprised there is an increase, it’s difficult to live on the minimum wage,” she said.

But Ms Peacock, who also runs a ski hire, bike shop and cafe, was concerned the

minimum wage increase was more pressure on business, amid growing supply costs.

“Every time we get stock, prices seem to have gone up,” she said.

“It boils down to how much businesses can absorb the cost.”

“It’ll be interesting to see what impact it really has - I don’t think it’s going to be all that much.”

While most minimum awards will increase from July 1, the FWC ruled that awards in hospitality, aviation and tourism will increase from October 1, due to ‘exceptional circumstances’ in those industries.

Greg Schultz, co-owner of the Riverdeck Kitchen in Bright, said he doesn’t employ anyone on the minimum wage, but suggested the increase will impact the hospitality industry and increase costs for customers.

“It will have a significant impact on costs to the hospitality industry because labour is such a big part of our cost structure,” he said.

Tim Chapman, owner of the Myrtleford Hotel, said that while he pays higher than the minimum wage, he will probably increase his wages to remain a competitive employer.

“I’ve probably got to go up another $5 per hour to be at the same level that I am now because I want to be an employer of choice,” he said.

Mr Chapman said he was supportive of the increase because he knows his staff are doing it tough, but suggested other ways to ease the burden.

“My staff members need it, but reduce my taxes so I can pay for it,” he said.

Jim van Geet, president of the Myrtleford Chamber of Commerce, suggested the impact from the minimum wage increase would be insignificant.

“Virtually everybody’s paying well above award rates, because it’s very difficult to get employees,” he said.

By EWAN KENNEDY SUBARU WRX, often tagged as the “Rex” is high-performance machine that’s been a longtime favourite with Australian drivers since it first arrived Downunder in 1994.

The latest model is offered as a sedan and station wagon.

It comes in four variants: base, RS, GT and tS, and two engine/transmission combinations.

Our test car was the GT Sportwagon and we thoroughly enjoyed our week’s road test as it operates in all conditions in the country or the city with not only stunning performance but quite good comfort that makes it suited to family transport as well as a semitrack machine if you want to take to a driver’s day at a racing facility near you.

Subaru service intervals for the latest WRX are now at 12 months/15,000 km. Up from the six months/12,500 km on the previous models.

STYLING Pumped up guards and the air intake that sits on the top of the bonnet -

thankfully not underneath and out of sight as was stupidly tried a few years back.

Cladding garnishes that run all the way around the car are finished in a honeycomb texture and are said to minimise the disruption of air around the vehicle and therefore improving stability.

INTERIOR The second row is reasonably spacious and comfortable thanks to the increased size of the new model compared to the previous WRXs. Subaru claims there’s increased space in the back thanks to its slightly larger dimensions over the outgoing model.

As is often the way they are better suited to two people than three.

Unless the driver is very tall and/or likes their seat set well back in which case the person behind them might find legroom is fairly tight.

WRX Sportswagon 492 litres of cargo space with all seats in use.

This increases to 909 litres with the second-

row seats folded down in 40:20:40. There’s a temporary spare wheel under the boot floor INFOTAINMENT WRX’s infotainment system is controlled through a portrait 11.6-inch touchscreen that’s easy to see and use.

You can use voice commands to operate the system but, as is too often the way, they don’t always get the message correctly.

A six-speaker sound system is standard in the lower cost models.

The WRX RS and tS sedan models have a a premium 10-speaker Harman/ Kardon setup. We certainly enjoyed the quality of sound in our test car.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The engine is a 2.4-litre flat-four ‘boxer’ unit and drives through all four wheels by way of a sixspeed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission.

In CVT models a variable torque distribution centre differential has a nominal split of 45:55 biased to-

wards to the rear wheels.

The split can be altered depending on drive modes selected, with the WRX’s Sport settings have a rearwheel bias.

SAFETY Airbags cover both rows of occupants and there are IsoFix child seat mounts on the outboard rear seats.

Standard features across the complete range include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lanechange assist and a rearview camera.

For some odd reason those with a manual gearbox don’t have autonomous emergency braking and emergency steering.

We feel this may come in the future as Subaru has long had an emphasis on safety.

DRIVING The new 2.4-litre turbopetrol four-cylinder engine is pretty linear in its delivery and is delightful to sit behind. It’s happy to rev to close to its redline but we found it better to change a couple of hundred revs lower because it still drivers plenty of punch thank

to the wide torque spread.

Subaru says the WRX will use 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres of 95 RON petrol on the combined cycle. We averaged between nine and eleven litres per hundred around town and in the suburbs. This dropped to six to seven litres on easy paced country running.

If you want to have a fang in the country - and of course you do! - it’s not too bad at nine to 10 litres.

Thanks to its four-wheel drive system the WRX Sportwagon is exceptional in its cornering.

The chassis is nicely balanced and the steering wheel offers good feedback.

Analogue dials with a relatively small driver-display screen which can toggle through various driving data as well as route guidance.

This latest version is unlikely to dampen our enthusiasm one little bit.

Assembly sets tone on Treaty THE First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria made a historic address to the Victorian Parliament on Wednesday on the importance of Treaty, setting the tone for debate on the nation leading Treaty Authority Bill.

Assembly co-chairs Aunty Geraldine Atkinson and Marcus Stewart addressed the Legislative Assembly of the Victorian Parliament in both English and in language, following the introduction of members of the First Peoples’ Assembly.

Members of Victoria’s democratically elected First Peoples’ Assembly were present in the Parliament Chamber.

The presence of the First People’s Assembly in the chamber symbolised the beginning of a new pathway that honours and acknowledges the truth of the past and forges the way to a brighter shared future for all Victorians.

The address follows Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams attending a First Peoples’ Assembly chamber meeting on Gadubanud Country of the Eastern Maar people earlier this month to sign the Treaty Authority Agreement with the Assembly, representing true partnership on our path to Treaty.

The assembly negotiated with the Labor Government to develop the Treaty Authority, which is the ‘independent umpire’ that will oversee treaty negotiations between the government and Aboriginal Victorians.

Minister Williams introduced the Treaty Authority Bill into the Victorian Parliament on June 7 after an agreement was reached between the Victorian Government and the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.

First Peoples’ Assembly co-chair

Aunty Geraldine Atkinson said the journey to Treaty needs to be guided by First Peoples.

“This agreement we’ve reached with the government reflects what our people want - it’s an umpire that they can trust because it will be led by First Peoples, be grounded in our culture, lore and law and be completely independent from government,” Aunty Geraldine said.

Fellow co-chair Marcus Stewart agreed.

“I hope that all the politicians can see the importance of not only making sure First Peoples determine the destination, but that we can also choose the path we take to reach Treaty,” he said.

“This agreement to establish the Treaty umpire has been developed

by First Peoples, for First Peoples.

“It’s what our community wants and we’re urging the Parliament to back us in.”

WITH more Victorians welcoming a pet into their family than ever, the Andrews Labor Government is backing the state’s first ever Pet Census to ensure pet owners have the support and services they need.

Funding for the census forms part of a record $18.6 million package to support animal care and protection in this year’s Budget with Minister for Agriculture MaryAnne Thomas announcing $613,000 from the Victorian

Budget 2022/23 for the Pet Census, which will gather crucial information on pet ownership and attitudes of pet owners.

The Pet Census will collect data across Victoria on a range of areas relevant to pet ownership and pet welfare, including:  The demographics of Victoria’s pet owners and their pets;  General matters relevant to pet health (e.g. diet, exercise etc);

 The costs and services associated with purchasing and caring for pets; and  The social and well-being impacts of pet ownership.

This will allow the State Government to better prioritise and develop reforms and policies that will benefit Victoria’s pets, their owners and the animal welfare sector.

An exposure draft of the Bill will be released next year, ensuring that all Victorians have the opportunity to

have their say before it is introduced into Parliament.

The information gathered as part of the Victorian Pet Census will be used to inform Government’s next generation of pet and animal welfare reforms, ensuring the priorities of Government are keeping with the current needs and expectations of the Victorian community.

It is anticipated that the Victorian Pet Census will be conducted in 2023 using an online survey.

Hawks name Kennett’s AFL successor

JEFF Kennett’s eventful second stint as Hawthorn’s AFL president will finally come to an end later this year with the Hawks naming his successor.

Peter Nankivell, who has served as Hawthorn’s vicepresident for the last five years, will step into the top position at the club’s general meeting in December.

Kennett praised the choice of Nankivell, who did not nominate for the role but was urged to re-

consider when a committee was unable to find a suitable new candidate.

“It is wonderful when succession of an organisation can come from within,” Kennett said.

“This will ensure that the momentum behind important initiatives on and off the field can be maintained and nurtured.

“Peter has a deep knowledge of the club and, at this time, has been found to be the most appropriate

person to lead the club’s future development and activities.

“Importantly, Peter has a value set that will continue to build our family club ethos.

“I thank the members of the nominations committee for the many meetings and hours of work they have contributed in the interest of the club.”

Kennett, the outspoken former Victorian premier, first served as Hawthorn presi-

dent between 2005 and 2011.

During that period, he changed the club’s constitution so that Hawthorn presidents could only serve two three-year terms.

But Kennett returned to become president in 2017, taking over from Richard Garvey after he received criticism for the appointment of chief executive Tracey Gaudry, who lasted just five months in the job.

Kennett has come underfire a number of times, often

from other Hawthorn people.

The 74-year-old received heavy criticism for his handling of Hawthorn’s botched coaching succession plan, when premiership mastermind Alastair Clarkson was replaced by Hawks legend Sam Mitchell.

Clarkson was pushed out after 17 seasons in charge when rival clubs came hunting for Mitchell last year to potentially become their senior coach.

CHALLENGE: NSW’s Stephen Crichton has a big task ahead of him when he comes up against Queensland’s left edge.

star Cyril Rioli earlier this year spoke out against the Hawks, saying race-related incidents contributed to his decision to call it quits from the AFL prematurely.

Rioli and his wife made it clear they will not return to Hawthorn while Kennett remains in charge.

Kennett said last month he has since been in touch with Rioli a “number of times” and the pair are “moving in the right direction”.

NSW’s Crichton ready for Munster challenge AFTER a baptism of fire in his State of Origin debut, Penrith’s Stephen Crichton knows the size of the task ahead of him as NSW aim to level the series.

Crichton was a surprise selection on the bench for game one and was only thrown into action when Kotoni Staggs picked up a shoulder injury.

He struggled to get into his groove in his 30-minute cameo and one of his first involve-

ments resulted in him being placed on report for a dangerous throw on Cameron Munster.

The Maroons five-eighth also showed off his cunning game awareness by stripping the ball off Crichton when the Blues desperately went in search of a late try, leaving the Origin debutant red-faced.

“I knew it was going to be quick, but it surprised me just how quick it was,” he said.

Swim star Jack returning home for surgery SWIMMER Shayna Jack is returning to Australia to have surgery on a broken hand but is adamant the Commonwealth Games remain on her agenda.

Jack was forced to withdraw from the world championships in Budapest where she made a triumphant return to international competition after a twoyear doping ban.

Jack won gold and silver medals as part of the Australian relay teams at the worlds but was injured ahead of her scheduled individual freestyle swims.

It was initially reported

the 23-year-old was hurt after slipping in a warm-up area.

But Jack revealed she broke her hand when it became entangled in another swimmer’s suit in the warm-up pool.

The Queenslander had xrays at a Budapest hospital which showed a spiral break in the fourth metacarpal bone in her left hand.

“The past couple of hours I have been in shock and disbelief,” Jack wrote on Instagram.

“To ensure the fastest possible recovery for my hand I will be returning to

AUS for surgery.

“Post surgery the plan is to return to my teammates in Chartres in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.”

The Australian swim team will hold a training camp in Chartres ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham starting on July 28.

At the world titles, Jack was part of Australia’s goldmedal winning 4x100m freestyle relay on the opening night of competition and added silver as part of the nation’s 4x100m mixed medley team.

BBL draft an interesting concept: Ponting THE BBL draft has the potential to disrupt the status quo of overseas players at franchises, Ricky Ponting says.

Ponting, the newly appointed head of strategy at the Hobart Hurricanes, describes the BBL’s overseas player draft as an “interesting concept”.

“We are not sure how it’s going to work until we know the quality of the players that will be in the draft,” Ponting said on Thursday.

“Certainly in the first year of the draft by the sound of it, you will only

contract that player for one year and then they go back in the draft the next year.

“So wait and see how it comes about.

“The teams now have got the right to retain ... so if we wanted Rashid Khan down here and he’s an Adelaide Strikers contracted player, then they have got the right to match what we do anyway.

“I am sure that is the intention of it, certainly in the first year anyway, maybe to try and disrupt and get some of the players out of the environments they have been in for the last few years.

“I am very much a novice at the way this is going to work.

“It hasn’t been in play in too many other competitions around the world so by the time it’s done we will have a much better understanding of it all.”

Overseas players will set a salary scale - gold, silver or bronze - when nominating for the draft.

The BBL will then elevate players with the biggest pulling power into a platinum category, with part of that wage to fall outside of the salary cap.

Australia crowned darts World Cup kings AUSTRALIA have claimed their maiden World Cup of Darts title on a historic night in Frankfurt, Germany.

Simon ‘The Wizard’ Whitlock and Damon Heta defeated Welsh duo Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton 3-1 in Sunday’s decider to become only the fifth country to lift the trophy.

Ten years on from suffering World Cup heartbreak in an extraordinary 2012 finale against England, losing 4-3 in a sudden-death leg alongside Paul Nicholson, Whitlock fulfilled his darting destiny alongside Australian No.1 Heta

to scoop the £70,000 ($A123,120) top prize at the Eissporthalle.

Australia, the fifth seeds, had already dumped out five-time semifinalists Belgium and top seeds England on Finals Day. “It is life-changing. I have dreamt about this moment my entire life and I’ve finally got there,” an emotional Whitlock, one of four World Cup ever-presents, said.

“It feels amazing. I had a great partner. Damon has been amazing.

He’s a great friend, and he’s the best player on the planet right now. He is going to be the next world champion.”

Heta gave Australia the early impetus in the final with a stunning singles whitewash win over Price, before 53-year-old Whitlock battled past Clayton 4-2.

The 2012 runners-up had the momentum and opened up a twoleg buffer in the pairs contest, but Price and Clayton produced a stirring fightback to prolong the drama.

Whitlock missed a dart at double 18 for the title, and Clayton capitalised for the Welsh via double eight to clinch the match and reduce the arrears to 2-1.

Clayton then had the chance to

set up a grandstand finale between Whitlock and Price, but 34-yearold Heta produced a nerveless display in the biggest game of his life to fend off the former Premier League champion and spark jubilant celebrations from the Australian duo.

“Simon dragged me through the beginning,” Heta said.

“I’m stoked for Simon and stoked for Australia with all the support we’ve had back home.

“Everything we are sacrificing being here and we’ve got the title in the bag. It’s an amazing feeling.”

TARRA GOLF CLUB THE Mixed Foursomes Championships for the 2022 season was played with Manny Tanirau and Fay Phillips the winners with scratch 98 and the runners-up being Mark Nolan and June Christesen with scratch 101.

The handicap winners were Lindsay Steer and Audrey Bradfield 106-32.5-73.5 and the runners-up were Leo McCoy and Beat Allen 102-25-77.

There was only one nearest the pin for the day which was Manny Tanirau on the 4th.

Golf to be played on Saturday, June 25 is a stableford event being the Presidents V Captains.

Starting time is 11:30am rollup for a 12 noon start, all players welcome.

Oxley table tennis returns with a bang

PASSERS by could have been excused for thinking there was an EOFY sale on at the Oxley hall last Monday night, when 20 players lined up at the door on the dot of 7pm to get their $2 worth at the weekly social table tennis competition.

The Butcher (Martin) and the baker (Richard Morgan) provided a feast of activity and entertainment when they dished it up to the ‘silver-plated’ opposition par, Neil Spurgeon and tourist by trade’ Cheryl Coad.

And while each pair put their utmost into every stroke of every point, the lead ebbed and flowed for what seemed an eternity.

But after the ‘foodies’ took an early lead, Spurgeon and Coad turned the tables to level the score

at 20 each.

Who took the cake? They didn’t say.

It was on for young and old when ‘schoolies’ Phoebe Bosley and Archie Crispin lined up for what they might’ve thought would be a ‘bargain buy’ when they took on fellow ‘schoolie’ Zac Mullins and Archie’s mum, Kate Cole.

Spectators ‘oohed and aahed’ as each player displayed the unrelenting 3 D’s - determination, desperation, and desire.

Coming as no surprise, final scores were 21-20 in favour of Crispin and Bosley.

Bourke (Brian) and Wills (William Bonwick) explored every inch of the table and beyond, as they searched for their Eldorado in a tough contest against ‘I’ve been everywhere’ Gary Coad, and his ‘near neighbour’ Sue McGregor.

While Bourke and Coad used plenty of power play, Bonwick and McGregor contributed the crafty shots, to make it a very even contest from go to whoa.

A great game by all, but the long and short of it saw the explorers planting the flag pole 21-19.

Taking time off from his photography duties, Jason Mullins drew the short straw to partner ‘hit or miss’ June Uebergang, in their line up against the ‘neverstopped’ Adam Bosley and the very valued district volunteer, Erica Pike.

Plenty of noise, plenty of action and plenty of hard work by all four saw both excellent and ordinary’ stroke-making, contributing to a very enjoyable mixture of wills and skills.

Manni Poulos was ‘all systems go’ when he partnered the ‘all

night party girl’, Margot Ingwersen, as they faced up to ‘meals on wheels man’ Simon Brown and the ‘queen of arabesque’, Lucy Uebergang.

The age-long contest packed with old strokes and new provided both players and spectators with lots of laughs and enjoyment.

And like all of the many sets played during the evening, it personified the words “it matters not if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.”

Following the night’s feast of activity, everyone retired to the kitchen for a cuppa and a feast of ‘home mades’.

Adults and secondary schoolers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the group each Monday night, beginning at 7pm - bring your own bat and $2 entry fee.

A GRADE NVC (N.Vincent, K.Brown and A.Lindner) took no mercy in defeating Somerset Comms (M.Commensoli, A.Robertson & R.Voss) 8:3.

A tighter match found Brownles Builders (M.Brown, S.Picken and M.Angehrn) just defeating Boralma Berkshire (A.Wurtz, I.Groom & P.Peck) 6:5.

B Grade Somerset Comms (D.Larkings, M.Bellingham and R.Divinagracia) played to their strengths defeating Blue Raven (F.Harris, J.Maletta and A.Holmes) who didn’t go down without a fight with the final score 6:5.

A total knock out by Morris Bros (A.Plum, B.Goodwin and P.Mulrooney) completely defeating NE Ag & Industrial (R.Gerrett, T.Tatulaschwili and A.Lindner) 11:0.

C Grade Through the skin of their teeth West End Lotto (J.Friend, J.Hughes and A.Fernando) just defeated Ne Ag & Industrial (R.Kanaskar, C.Butterworth and P.Densten) 6:5.

The strong team of NVC (P.Fitzgerald, I.Hackett and M.Curran) easily defeated Boralma Berkshire (C.Hobbs, M.Currie-Fraser and G.Barrow).

Milawa Racquets Club hosts entertaining grand finals THE first grand final for the Milawa Racquets Club was held last Friday night and proved the club has returned strongly after the COVID-19 difficulties.

It was a great chance for the Monday night racquetball players and the Thursday night squash players to get together and each had very vocal supporters who enjoyed the competition right to the last game.

The Monday night racquetball final was between Team Ariel and Team Snow White.

Ariel was favoured to win as they had finished number one team in the comp and had the number one aggregate player on their team, but Snow White had other ideas.

And as we know grand finals always throw up a few curve balls (pardon the pun).

The matches were very close with almost all going to three games.

Possibly the hardest fought game was between Gayle Roman and Kerri

Grant, with both players showing clear fatigue but battling it out with each other and Kerri winning the third game 22 to 20.

There will be a few that will be looking to step up the ladder and test their skills in a higher level.

In the end it was Snow White who prevailed and they took out first prize with a well deserved win.

The Thursday night squash players result was over after the first three matches which allowed the crowd to witness a more light hearted game of doubles.

Doubles is not played in competition at Milawa but the reception it received may well make it a more regular initiative.

Team Liqueur were on top of the ladder and had the rest going into the grand final, this was not an advantage as team Classic had honed their competitive juices with a very narrow win against team Dazed Duck the night before and focused all their thoughts on the final.

Trevor Dinning, who won the competition aggregate, was not only the oldest player competing but after losing by one point to the youngest player, Detroit Francis in the qualifying final, came out and gave Andrew Gehrig no opportunity to get into the match.

Likewise Mal Dinning was prepared for a close match, but was completely blitzed

by Ben Sockett.

Mark Wright, who’d had an unusually quiet season, came out to take on Brad Gourlay.

RECORD BREAKER: Kate Fawkner competing at the Oceania championships in Mackay earlier this month.

Mark knew he had to start hard and overcome Brad early, as his fitness level would not have matched Brad.

Again the experienced campaigner was determined not to let a winning opportunity go by.

All games were high quality and any slight relaxation by the eventual winner would certainly have had a great impact on the result.

As team Classic had comprehensively won, so Travis Whiley and Scott Flanigan took on Ross Gehrig and

Mick Ellis in what was a highly entertaining and enjoyable doubles game.

All night the centre court was given over to the next generation who were able to enjoy a noncompetitive hit which at times resembled dodge ball rather than squash or racquetball but there was certainly lots of laughter and enjoyment and a display of racquet skills and fitness that is an indicator that the game will continue with some very enthusiastic young players.

The grand final night incorporated our usual family barbecue, ably manned by Greg Clydesdale and then backed up somewhat frequently by Robyn Snowdon when Greg was compelled to cheer on a close game.

Drinks supplied also enhanced the social side of the game, which is definitely a feature of this club.

While competitive on the court, the fellowship and benefits that this club represents were very obviously on display.

It was a great night enjoyed by all.

Trevor Dinning (squash) and Wayne Peglar (racquetball) were the competition aggregate winners of the autumn comp.

Joan Maher took home the member raffle prize of a new racquet to give her a winning edge.

Our winter competitions for racquetball (Mondays) and squash (Thursdays) will commence in July when school holidays are over.

The club conducts training sessions for juniors on Friday nights during school term.

Come and try either squash or racquetball and join what is recognised as one of the best sports for fitness.

Fawkner’s golden delight Knights men fall, ladies win well at Oceania championships WANGARATTA athlete Kate Fawkner has returned from the Oceania Para Athletics Championships in Mackay with a perfect record, winning two gold and breaking Oceania champion records in both events.

In a world first for international athletics competitions earlier this month, para athletes

competed for Oceania Championships medals at the same time as the abled bodied athletes at the same venue.

Fawkner, who identifies as transgender, competed in the men’s discus and javelin emulating her perfect record for both during qualifying at the Victorian country,

state and then national championships.

“I’m taking hormones and my long term aim is to compete as Kate and when I get down to the required hormone levels by Athletics Australia I am hopeful of being able to compete against the women at the 2020 Paris Olympics,” Kate said

ROUND 10 of the Murray Cup proved overwhelming for the Wangaratta Knights when they took on league leaders Wodonga Wombats.

With the Wombats scoring within the first two minutes of the game the Knights knew they had a hard task ahead of them.

The Wombats defence was impregnable and trying to stop them was a feat in itself.

Full time score 46-0.

Rangers downed by Bears WANGARATTA Rangers played Albury Bears in the A Grade game after being the two most represented teams to have players at the carnival.

Both teams were not at their best, Rangers had only four batters face the pitcher in their first dig before they lost their third out.

The Bears scored three runs in their turn at bat after having their first three batters get on base, two from walks and the third hit by a pitched ball.

It was not until their third innings that Rangers even

looked like getting any runs.

They scored three runs this innings but Bears led seven runs to three at the start of the fourth.

Bears added another three runs in their next turn at bat, but it was not until the bottom of the sixth that Rangers got another run, then added one more in their last.

Rangers had 12 safe hits, Shaun O’Neil having four of them while Bears had 14 safe hits, Daryl Tuffey being their best with the bat also having four from four.

Bears won 10 runs to Rangers Black five.

Rangers Orange played Porepunkah Panthers in one B grade game.

Panthers batted first but they could not get runners on base in their first four turns at bat.

The seven runs rule came into play in each of the first three batting digs for Rangers Orange.

A change of pitcher by Rangers saw Panthers being able to get some runners on base and brought in six runs in their last innings to go down to Rangers Orange 25 runs to Panthers six.

Grade game, Rangers Grey played Wodonga Warriors.

Rangers Grey started first time pitcher Heath French on the mound and although Warriors brought in three runs in their first turn at bat, French pitched well throwing 40 strikes out of the 79 pitches he had in the three innings he had on the mound.

Rangers Grey scored the maximum of seven runs allowed in each of their first two innings.

Warriors added four more runs in their third innings.

Rangers under 11s had 17 players turn up, one short of enough for two teams.

With the team coaches pitching to their own players, each team batted well and scored runs in each turn at bat.

Each of the Rangers got a bat each in the three innings played with Panthers the winners with 24 runs to Rangers eight but the kids all had fun.

The Victorian Country Under 18 Carnival is being played at Targoora Park, Wangaratta this weekend.

Hoppers netballers can’t be counted out

THEY’VE been one of the biggest improvers over the past few years, but the next few weeks will determine if Moyhu’s A grade squad can step up their game and break into the top six in time for finals.

The Hoppers pulled off a gutsy win last week against King Valley and take on Bright on their home court tomorrow, in a match which is sure to be a tightly contested affair.

Moyhu are currently eighth on the ladder with eight rounds (one bye) left, but coach Sharlene Wohlers said they’re not out of the running just yet.

“We’re a much-improved Moyhu team, everything’s starting to click and gel and come together,” she said.

“I’m definitely not counting finals out, there only needs to be one upset - if we can beat a couple of teams that we might not have beaten in the first round, we definitely could get into the six.

“Our main goal and focus is to play really consistent netball for four quarters, because that’s where we ran short in the first half of the season - we’d play two really good quarters and then have two shockers.

“Now they’re really starting to play that four quarter game of netball, so that’s been a real focus.”

The young Hoppers outfit has come a long way since the start of the year, with multiple players showing a mountain of talent.

“Our goalies are really starting to combine well together, I’ve got Ella Corrigan and Sophie Morey, they’re just getting better and better every week - their accuracy has gone from say 65 per cent to the high 80s, so they’re playing really well,” Wohlers said.

“Georgia Allen’s returning back to the team, she’s had a broken foot so she’s been out for six weeks.

“I’ve also got Jacquie Lake who’s already playing with us and she’s been playing in keeper while Georgia’s been injured - she’ll go out onto the wing, she’ll play a bit more of a role in that position in wing defence.

“The last couple of years I’ve coached the majority of these girls,

but they’re a young team so they sometimes lack that experience with their decision making, but I feel like they’ve really all matured in their game.

“What I’ve been reinforcing over the last couple of years has just really clicked, so I’m really excited - I wish this was the start of the season and we could start again.”

When they first went head to head back in round six, Moyhu walked away from Pioneer Park with a 30 goal win over Bright, but the rematch is shaping up to be a much closer tussle.

“It’ll be a tough game - I think all the games are tough - but we’ll just

have to be switched on right from the start, right from that first whistle,” Wohlers said.

“Bright is tough, they’re always a tough team, because Bridget (FlintChapman) returns.

“We did have a win against them up in Bright but they had a few out, so those girls would’ve returned this week, but an advantage for us is we’re playing on our home turf.

“We need to convert our centre passes into goals, be really patient in our goal end - they’ve got some tight defenders.

“Everyone’s playing well, if they carry on and play four quarters of netball, we’ve got a real chance.”

Milawa still eyeing a top two finish

By NATHAN DE VRIES THEIR dominance over the league may have been challenged this season, but Milawa’s senior side believes they can move into the finals in either first or second spot on the ladder.

The Demons will take their case to the current top team, Benalla All Blacks, on the field at Friendlies Oval tomorrow in what could be a grand final preview.

Milawa coach Ricky Petts said the last few weeks haven’t been easy for the reigning premiers, but the previous two weeks away from play has set the side up for success.

“The season has not gone exactly to plan, although we are happy to have an 8-2 record,” he said.

“We have had a terrible run of injuries to important players and it seems that when we get one back another goes down.

“The two weeks came at a good time for us - it has given us a chance to recover and then set ourselves up for the rest of the year.

“We want to be playing at the business end of the year so finishing top four is ok but we have our sights on a top two finish.

Benalla is the only team the Demons have yet to come up against, and the match will give both sides insight into how they stack up against the rest of the finals contenders.

“Benalla are a quality team that

we are looking forward to seeing for the first time,” Petts said.

“They have had some very big wins and are sitting on top of the ladder, so we need to rate them highly and respect what they have done so far this year.

“They have good players all over the ground and so it is important

that we respect what they can do and play accordingly.

“We want to win as many games as we can for the rest of the year, we understand that we have a few tough games in that time including this weekend’s clash with Benalla and we want to win those big games.”

By NATHAN DE VRIES TIME is quickly running out for Tarrawingee to break into the top six, sitting two games off the pace, making tomorrow’s showdown against King Valley a make-orbreak game for the Bulldogs.

It’s a long shot, but coach Xavier Norden said spirits around the club were better than ever in the face of tough odds.

“We spoke about it in the rooms after the loss to Greta - their spirits are really high which is really good,” he said.

“I think everyone really enjoyed the game and enjoyed the challenge, and it was a fantastic hit out even though we didn’t come away with the win, we left feeling it was a great game to be a part of.

“Although we’re not where we thought we would be, by no means is it panic stations or anything like that, it’s just about trying to get the lads out on the park and trying to get a healthy list together for the remainder of the year.

“With young players and some older fellas, we just want to make sure everyone’s enjoying it - that’s why we play footy, to get out there with your mates, and enjoy your weekends together.”

The Bulldogs host King Valley (three wins and eight losses) in the first match of a vital period for Tarrawingee’s finals hopes.

“I think after the next three games, that’ll show us whether we’re still a chance to play finals or not,” Norden said.

“We’ve got a big game coming up against King Valley at home, and then we’ve got Milawa and the Bats.

“I work with Tony Ciancio, one of King Valley’s key players, so we often find ourselves reflecting in the staff room after trainings and after game day, so I think after all of that we know each other’s sides quite well.

“As everyone knows with King Valley, their key players are Beau Wheeler and Sam Evans, and if you let them play their game they can really have an impact on the match.

“We’ve got to be mindful of that and make sure we get our midfield sorted.

“It should be a really interesting game.”

In other round 13 matches, Whorouly makes the trip to Bonnie Doon, Milawa attempts to reclaim their throne at the top of the table over Benalla, Goorambat host North Wangaratta, and the Hoppers go head to head with Bright.

Three way tussle for clay target top spot IN spite of disappointingly low numbers, competition was fierce at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club’s down the line shoot on Saturday, June 18.

The excellent conditions allowed competitors to demonstrate their skills and at the end of the main events, three shooters were tied for overall high gun honours.

Event one was the 25 target point score and the Wang club’s Keith Willett took out AA Grade with 70/75, dropping only one target, but using his second barrel twice.

A shoot-off was needed to sort out A Grade.

Scott McKenzie was the first to drop out of the group, leaving Trevor Harbor, a long way from his Hay Gun Club base, to take the win on 82/87.

Bob Glossop was second with 79/87.

In B Grade, the reliable Craig Sessions missed only one target to score 70/75 for the win.

Second went to Echuca visitor Nick Dean on 58/75.

C Grade went to Mansfield’s David Luelf, repeating the excellent form he showed at last month’s shoot.

David’s 71/75 was the highest OTG (Off the Gun) score across all grades.

Second in C Grade was St James Gun Club stalwart Peter Gorrie on 66/75.

The second event on the card was a 50 target Double Barrell and AA Grade went to Keith Willett on 47/50.

Once again, a shoot-off was necessary to decide the A Grade winner.

Bob Glossop, after a run of second places at recent events in Wang, took his welldeserved position on the top step with 51/54.

Second went to Trevor Harbor on 50/54.

Echuca club shooter Kerrie Dean was the unfortunate one to drop out of the shootoff.

In B Grade, Craig Sessions and Nick Dean duplicated their earlier result, with Craig in first on 46/50 and Nick, getting ever so close this time, second on 45/50.

C Grade went to Numurkah/ Shepp shooter Ben Jones with 45/50, but with three shooters tied in second, yet another shoot-off was needed.

It became a two-way contest when Stephen Coulston had to head off early to milk those inconsiderate dairy cows of his back in Tangambalanga.

David Luelf prevailed over Peter Gorrie to take second with 47/53.

LOCAL hockey-goers were flat out over the weekend with games in Albury.

Under 12 Girls The girls played the very strong North Albury team.

Lily Radnor played really well defending the goal without a goalie’s kit, well supported by Jordana Moore and Greta Le. They were able to keep the opposition to only eight goals, an admirable result that really shows how far they have come as a team so far this year.

Kiana Lane was fantastic in the attacking line, winning the Wangaratta Club player of the match.

Olive Murray, Ellie Samson and Adara Evans had a number of attempts at goal, but unfortunately couldn’t convert.

They play Beechworth at home in Wangaratta this week from noon.

Under 17 Girls Top of the table, United were the opposition this week.

With a full team for the first time the girls showed more confidence than they have previously and did well to keep the score to 6-0.

Amelie Griffin again saved many goals, backed up by Abby Brown and Tully McGahey.

Lily Gibb played centre half, showing that this is her best position.

She tackled well and passed many balls to the attacking squad of Ellie

Samson, Chloe Collins and Ada Wheeler.

Ellie Samson received player of the match for her tenacious attacking as the mist came in.

Playing Falcons this week, the girls are looking forward to a great match.

Women’s The ladies had a hard game against the Wombats, pushing the whole game.

The winning goals came in the fourth quarter, from some continual attacking in their goals.

The ability to come together as a team when they had to dig deep was satisfying to watch.

No one gave up on the belief that they would win by sticking to the plan.

Well done to the team on a hard game, thanks to the Wombats for pushing us.

Men’s The men played a really tough game on Saturday, the Wombats were again very strong in attack.

Club president Daniel Warner and Anthony Couche were again very impressive leading the defence.

Goalkeeper Philip Fitzgerald was amazing making a spectacular save against a penalty stroke which stopped us going down to the Wombats.

Young guns Andrew Groves and Samuel Couche were once again impressive and improving every week.

Wangaratta Rovers wary of Raiders’ mids

By WILLSON MACK WANGARATTA Rovers won’t be underestimating Wodonga Raiders when they clash tomorrow at Birallee Park.

Although the Raiders are winless, their midfield consists of arguably the league’s best ruckman Isaac Muller, 2019 Morris Medalist Jarrod Hodgkin and young up and comer Max Beattie.

The pair last met in round two when the Hawks ran away 50 point winners.

“There certainly won’t be any underestimation,” Wangaratta Rovers operations manager Barry Sullivan said.

“Raiders can be competitive and we found that out last time, we got off to a flier and then they stuck with us.

“We cannot relax because any team can win on their day in this year’s competition.

“The likes of Isaac Muller, Jarrod Hodgkin, Brad St John and Max Beattie can all do damage so we have to come in with the right attitude.”

Sullivan believes Wodonga Raiders’ top players are enough to challenge the Hawks.

“We learnt from our last game that their good players are still good players,” he said.

“If we can’t get the ball out of the middle against their good midfield then that’s going to make things hard. “’Gatto’ (Shane Gaston) is playing this time though so that will be a good clash in the ruck and then we have further ruck depth with Mackenzie Bristow and Coen Hennessey

“The players certainly do get some confidence from last weekend’s win, we’ve beaten Albury, Yarrawonga and then only lost by two goals to Wangaratta,” Sullivan said.

“We lost to Wodonga though which just shows whoever’s up on the day can win.

“I think our team is starting to gel and bond though, which is showing through our pressure on the field.”

Wangaratta Rovers showed their depth on the weekend as Ben Timms and Mackenzie Bristow rejoined the senior group after strong performances in the seconds.

The Hawks’ reserves are undefeated, sitting on top of the ladder.

“Our depth is showing that all spots are up for grabs,” Sullivan said.

“Our reserves are undefeated so there’s plenty of boys that could come in and secure their spot in the seniors.

“There are spots up for grabs for sure.”

Tomorrow’s match starts at 2pm.

Hawks a solid chance for win number two

By WILLSON MACK WANGARATTA Rovers netballers will take confidence from their round two clash against Wodonga Raiders when they meet again tomorrow at Birallee Park.

The Hawks put up an outstanding fight in their first face off, only going down 39-46 in a reasonably close encounter.

Since then, the Raiders have gone on to win three games for the year, while Wangaratta Rovers have just one victory to their name but this weekend shapes as a great chance to grab their second.

Wodonga Raiders girls will be low on confidence after being highly outclassed by Lavington last weekend, going down by 22 goals.

Meanwhile, Wangaratta’s meeting with Wodonga will be a great way

to bounce back from last Saturday’s loss to Yarrawonga.

The ‘Pies have found some form in recent weeks and even their 10 goal loss to the Pigeons showed positive signs, while the Bulldogs are the only winless team in the competition.

“The last time we played Wodonga they definitely improved from previous seasons,” Wangaratta co-coach Hannah Grady said.

“They pushed us at the start and we certainly think they will again this weekend.

“We just need to make sure we step up and take everything they bring.”

The Magpies will most likely regain Rachelle Petts who was a late out last week due to a sore hamstring, while Amy Byrne should return as well after being away.

WANGARATTA’S Fraser Holland-Dean has capped off a strong start to his first year of Ovens and Murray senior football with a rising star nomination.

Holland-Dean has featured in the Magpies senior side in every game this season, booting 11 majors from his 10 appearances.

He was also selected in the Ovens and Murray’s under 18 interleague side where he kicked two goals in their win against the Goulburn Valley League.

A total of five nominees in both football and netball will qualify for the Rising Star of the Year Award, to be presented at the Morris-Wilson Medal in September.

Wangaratta coach Ben Reid has been impressed with Holland-Dean’s efforts.

“Fraser made his senior debut in round one this season, on the back of a very impressive pre-season in which he barely missed a session,” Reid said.

“He is consistently the first person to arrive and the last person to leave the training track each week.

“His ability to play his role as a half forward/ wingman this season has made him an asset to our team.

“We look forward to seeing Fraser continue his development at the Magpies as the weeks and months progress.”

Back in the fast lane for young racer

By MARTIN DAVIS MANY Australian racers have jumped from karts to cars, with Supercars driver Cam Waters and Formula One drivers Daniel Riccardo and Oscar Piastri reaching the top racing flight at a young age.

Bright teenager Jackson Griffith has recently jumped to racing cars in the Hyundai Excel Series with Harrietville-based Loc Autosports.

Griffith, who graduated from Wangaratta’s Cathedral College in 2021 and is only 19, has been racing since he was 11 after a visit to his dentist piqued his interest in the entry-level mo-

“When I was nine my dentist had pictures of go-karts on the roof and I asked him what it was about, and he told me that he ran the go-kart club in Wodonga and I’d have to come back in two years and

he’d give me a go,” he said.

“In karts it is so much fun, but you are in something small and no one will take you seriously,” he said “As soon as you jump into the car people start taking notice.”

He has already completed two rounds of the Hyundai Excel Series, racing at Phillip Island in his debut.

He recently completed

the round at Winton Raceway, where he qualified in 8th before finishing three out of the four races in the top 10.

Griffith is now focused on ensuring he has a backup in case motorsport doesn’t work out for him.

“I finished year 12 in a high standard, so I’m wanting to have something to fall back on if my racing doesn’t take off, signing myself up for electrical engineering IT next year,” he said.

“But all in all, I would love go to the next step and work my way up to a Formula 3 or Supercar Series 2 with the hope to one day, reach Formula 1 or Supercars.”

Griffith will be looking at his next meeting in August when he goes to Sandown, intending to continue his form and finish in the top 10 with the hope by the end of the racing season to take his place back on the podium.

Devils ready for Savoys WANGARATTA City will need to put Saturday night’s FA Cup final disappointment behind them.

The Devils return to the regular season with a huge game against Myrtleford at South Wangaratta Reserve on Sunday.

The Devils and Savoys have brewed one of the fiercest rivalries in the AWFA competition over the past few years and spectators will be excited to get a taste of it this weekend.

“Sunday’s going to be a great game,” Wangaratta City coach Daniel Vasilevski said, “I reckon it’s a season defining game, if we can bounce back from Saturday night and show good character that’ll go a long way to setting us up for the next nine or 10 weeks.

“They’re a good side and we definitely won’t be taking them lightly.”

Myrtleford haven’t reached the same heights as they have in the past few seasons but they’ve been more than competitive, sitting in fifth spot with an eight wins, four losses record.

The Devils have had the wood over them in recent times and are on a seven match winning streak.

“Myrtleford are really measured in the way they set up so we’re ready for that,” Vasilevski said.

“It’s a danger game though because we’ve won six or seven in a row against them so you never know when they’re going to get tired of losing and put in a massive performance against us.

“We’ve just got to be on from the start.”

WODONGA may be out of the finals hunt but Wangaratta coach Ben Reid expects the Dogs to be gunning for the ladder leaders tomorrow at Norm Minns Oval.

The Magpies are in somewhat of a ‘form slump’ compared to the way they started the season after losing to Yarrawonga by 28 points last weekend, while they won by their lowest winning margin of 14 points the week before in the derby.

Although Wodonga haven’t fired much of a shot this season, they’re a better side than their ladder position reflects and only lost to the Pigeons by 17 points in round five, while they beat Wangaratta Rovers the following round.

But Reid expects his team to bounce back from last week’s loss.

“It’s about getting back to what we do well,” Reid said.

“We haven’t played the way we want to play the last few weeks so we’ve just got to put the effort in because by the looks of it it’s going to be a bit of a slog on the weekend.

“Our ball use hasn’t been where we want it to be, we’re not testing the opposition so we need to get back to pulling the trigger on our kicks.

“If it’s a rainy day though it’ll be about territory footy and just winning each contest.”

The Bulldogs will relish a wet day with the likes of contested bulls Angus Baker, Alex Smout and Josh Mathey all running through the middle.

“We’ve got big mids though as well so it’ll be a real fight in the middle.

“The grounds are heavier this time of year so even if it is a nice day it won’t be a quick game of footy.”

The Magpies will be without Matt Grossman (broken arm) and Callum Moore (ankle) who both left the field injured in last weekend’s loss to Yarrawonga.

“Every team goes through injuries at some time throughout the year so it’s not an excuse for performance,” Reid said.

“We’ve got 10 to 12 blokes out at the moment so it’s going to be a great opportunity for some of the boys plugging away in the seconds to come up.

“We just need every player to play their role and hopefully a few players can come up and make a spot there’s.”

Grossman is expected to miss at least six weeks after breaking his radius.

“He’s been down to Melbourne and had a plate put in his arm at the Epworth,” Reid said.

“Hopefully we can get him back sooner rather than later but it’s 10 weeks until finals so he’s got plenty of time to get himself right.

“He’s a really important player to us.”

Tomorrow’s clash starts at 2pm.
