A police spokesperson earlier said officers had received reports of a red minivan driving erratically along Cribbes Road around 6.30pm on Monday, and ultimately pulled up behind the vehicle on LacebyTargoora Road shortly after.

As police prepared to

confront the driver, the minivan allegedly reversed into the police vehicle and fled.

No police officers were injured during the incident.

Commentary from rural city residents on the ‘Wangaratta Community Noticeboard’ Facebook page alleged the vehicle had crashed through paddock fences in the vicinity of Cathedral College and

Laceby in the lead-up to the incident with police.

The vehicle was also alleged to have been spotted driving on the wrong side of the road at Mason Street around 5.30pm, and reaching high speeds along Murdoch Road shortly after 6pm.

“Investigators have been told the same vehicle was also seen driving erratically at the intersection of Inchbold Street and Cribbes

The vehicle allegedly caused damage to a fence at Inchbold Street.

A police helicopter was reportedly despatched to assist ground units in their search for the vehicle, and was observed flying over the rural city until around 9pm, according to other Facebook users.

New South Wales on Sunday, with police confirming the vehicle had been located and recovered after the driver allegedly absconded on foot.

Police investigate suspicious fire at Brash Avenue

By RYAN MALCOLM A TREE which was found alight in parkland near Brash Avenue on Monday afternoon is being investigated as suspicious by police.

Firefighters from both the CFA and Fire Rescue Victoria were called to the incident around 3.54pm.

“Firefighters arrived within seven minutes to find a burning tree,” an FRV spokesperson said.

“The FRV crew, supported by the CFA, worked to extinguish the fire and it was declared under control at 4.04pm.”

“The incident was deemed suspicious and the scene was handed over to Victoria Police.”

A police spokesperson said no structures had been damaged, and nobody had been injured.

McCurdy stands by Treaty backflip OVENS Valley Nationals MP Tim McCurdy has backed the Coalition’s call to withdraw its support from the Treaty For Victoria.

He cited a slowdown of development and economic opportunity due to cultural heritage laws as the reason for his party’s withdrawal in its bipartisan support.

Mr McCurdy told the Wangaratta Chronicle that “the Victorian Liberals and Nationals supported the framework for Treaty, but any support depended on closing the gap and delivering real outcomes for Indigenous Victorians”.

“That hasn’t happened,” Mr McCurdy said.

“Cultural heritage laws are slowing down development and economic opportunity in our state and a Treaty provides no guarantee that it will deliver a positive outcome when it comes to these issues.

“Our priority is to find a way forward to improve the lives and wellbeing of Indigenous Victorians in a way that unites us all.

“A Treaty is no substitute for a better health system, more housing, and a more affordable cost of living for every Victorian, including our First Peoples.”

The move by the opposition has been criticised by the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria which said they would have liked to have kept Treaty above party politics.

A spokesperson for the Minister for Treaty and First Peoples, Natalie Hutchins, said Victoria’s journey towards reconciliation and Treaty had bipartisan support - including in the critical 2022 Treaty Authority Bill.

“This announcement from John Pesutto’s Liberals is a complete u-turn that was never discussed with government, and

leaves Aboriginal communities to pick up the pieces,” she said.

“John Pesutto claims to be a moderate - but today shows he’s really a wolf in moderate’s clothes.

“He needs to explain what has really changed his mind, and how much it’s because of Peter Dutton’s creeping influence.

“Our government continues to back a better future for Aboriginal Victorians through Victoria’s Treaty process - because when we listen to Aboriginal people, it means better outcomes for Aboriginal communities and all Victorians.

“Victorians deserve better than John Pesutto’s Liberal Party, and we’ll keep working to progress a fairer future - for all of us.”

Northern Victoria Animal Justice MP Georgie Purcell said the opposition walking away from Treaty was a massive step backwards and will have the opposite

effect of what they claim their reasons to be.

“A Treaty with First Nations people will help us move forward on issues related to cultural heritage,” Ms Purcell said.

“It is more important than ever for us as politicians to reiterate our support for First Nations justice and reconciliation following the failed Voice to Parliament referendum.”

It’s believed an opposition cabinet meeting in November confirmed their change of stance on the issue.

Nationals leader Peter Walsh told Sky News on Sunday that the state opposition has withdrawn its bipartisan support, citing issues around cultural heritage and the Traditional Owner Settlement Act. Mr Walsh also raised concerns around secrecy in the discussions around Treaty and a lack of transparency and openness.

Kelly siege mural in running for national award A MURAL of Ned Kelly’s last stand, which has been impressing visitors to Kates Cottage and the Ned Kelly Museum in Glenrowan since March last year, is officially among the best public art experiences in the nation.

The Ned Kelly Siege at Glenrowan Mural, by national award winning artist AndrewJ-Bourke and contributing artist Bryan Itch, has been shortlisted for the 2023 Australian Street Art Awards’ Best External Mural gong.

Awards director Liz Rivers said the country’s largest such competition seeks to recognise places and operators around the nation who are using public art to entertain visitors and engage their community.

“The awards provide a plat-

form where trailblazing destinations – cities, regional towns and precincts – can be recognised for their contribution to both the world of street art and art tourism,” she said.

“Being shortlisted in these awards further cements the reputation of Glenrowan as an aspirational destination for tourists with history coming to life through art.”

National gold, silver and bronze winners in all 12 award categories plus each state champion will be announced at a gala dinner celebration on March 8 as part of the Art of Attraction Tourism Summit on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Co–owners of Kate’s Cottage, Michelle Coad and Doug Stoneman, said they were rapt to see national recognition of what

they believe is the most comprehensive mural of the Glenrowan seige ever created.

The artwork, which took a month to complete, depicts the full police siege of the Kelly gang at the Glenrowan Inn, with the police and the gang engaged in a gun fight, accompanied by a large portrait of Ned Kelly.

“It was important for us to be able to represent it (siege) in its entirety; the flagging down of the train, the shootout between the Kelly gang and police,” Ms Coad said.

“We decided we want to do this mural because there’s nothing in Glenrowan like it and we thought it’d be great to link the town with the art trail and also helps small businesses within small towns.

“This town is really well established as a destination town for Ned Kelly and putting something like that here brings the interest of the holiday goers who do the art trails as well as the silo trails...it links us into that.

“We’re not going to be here forever; Chris and Rod who were the previous owners of the business added the big Ned Kelly to the town and that was crucial to bringing people in.

“Adding another aspect of the whole Ned Kelly theme is something we just couldn’t pass by.”

Melbourne based artist Mr Bourke had completed multiple murals in the North East prior to his work in Glenrowan, including at the Winton Wetlands and two other Ned Kelly themed murals in Benalla.

Jazz AGM date set CURRENT Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues board members will stage a review of the 2023 event at their annual general meeting on Thursday, February 15.

The scaled-back 2023 festival was titled ‘The Last Hurrah’, after the existing board announced in August last year that it would bow out due to financial constraints, a shifting and uncertain outlook for music festivals in Australia, and diminished resources.

However, a series of meetings conducted by a group of locals since late last year have set in motion plans to ensure the festival remains on the rural city’s events calendar on the traditional weekend before the Melbourne Cup. The group has been gearing up for the AGM, the date of which was announced this week, with a view to forming a new board and enabling

the 33-year-old internationally-recognised event to continue in 2024.

Current board chair Dave Fuller said he was looking forward to strong attendance at next month’s AGM. “We have (previously) usually had between five and 15 people attending the AGM; this year we are expecting about 50,” he said. “(Those involved in the recent meetings) are a well-established group.”

Mr Fuller said the current board, which also comprises deputy chair Michael Iacovino, treasurer Geoff Davidson and Noah Barling in communications, was “relieved in some ways to know there is not just a full-stop on the festival as there might have been”.

He said he was hopeful of hand-

ing the event over to a group which was invested in the festival.

“There is a degree of happiness to see that a group is keen to pick it up,” he said.

“It shows how important it is to locals.

“I’m optimistic and excited to potentially work with them from the sidelines.”

The AGM will see the four current board members vacate their positions, with a returning officer to then call for new board members and those seeking to take on executive roles.

“None of the current board members are looking to go over to the new board,” Mr Fuller said.

The group of locals working to revive the festival will meet again on Tuesday, February 6 at The Railyard Wangaratta in Norton Street from 6pm, with anyone in-

terested welcome to come along.

Andrew Nunn, a member of the steering committee among the group of locals, said he was confident a new board would be formed at the AGM, though its composition was not yet set in stone.

He encouraged anyone keen to be involved with the festival to attend the group’s February 6 meeting.

The Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues annual general meeting will be held at the Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway (Bogong Room) on Thursday, February 15 from 5.30pm.

Alleged sexual assault on train under investigation POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding an alleged sexual assault on a Wangaratta V/Line train late last year.

The attack is alleged to have occurred on October 27 around 10am, on a V/Line train from Wangaratta to Southern Cross Station.

Following the incident, the offender is believed to have disembarked the train at Southern Cross and travelled on foot towards Bourke Street.

Group set to oppose dredge restrictions A GROUP of locals will gather at the Eldorado Dredge this afternoon amid concerns Parks Victoria could limit access to the popular recreational site.

A delegation of eight community members is set to meet with Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy to discuss ongoing access to the historic reserve, following consultation with

Parks and Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action representatives.

Over the last two months, both offices have expressed plans to restrict vehicle access on the dredge’s northern track, and discouraged swimming at both the dredge site and the nearby Top Cut due to concerns about Blue Green Algae blooms.

The move follows lobbying from a number of locals to have access to the area restricted due to environmental concerns.

A petition forwarded to Minister for Environment Steve Dimopoulos by Eldorado resident Roxanne Bodsworth in December urged the minister to continue to allow easy access to the swimming areas for people of all ages and

abilities, citing a 2002 agreement with Parks Victoria upon the creation of the Eldorado Historic Park.

The petition carried 524 signatures from between December 17 and 27, many of whom were locals from the Eldorado, Londrigan, Byawatha, Tarrawingee and Everton Upper localities.

Power outage twice in a day AN an underground cable fault on the AusNet network on Sunday at about 8.20am was the cause of an electricity power outage in Wangaratta.

AusNet reports that most of its customers were restored in 10 minutes.

However, due to the same fault about 1000 customers lost power at 4.21pm later in the day and power was restored around 5.45pm.

COVID ‘bingeing’ lingers into substance abuse

THE pandemic has caused more people to turn to bingeing as a form of coping.

According to self-improvement mentor, Danny Shannon, being stuck indoors with tight restrictions more people turned to binge drinking as a way to soothe themselves.

He said people typically binge due to the rewards we receive in the brain due to the feel-good chemical dopamine being released when we take part in these activities.

Wangaratta-based team leader of the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) community sector at Gateway Health, Jane Anderson, believes alcohol and substance abuse have become a prevalent issue in our community.

She said she has seen many clients of all demographics report this as an issue.

“We have clients that self-refer when they have identified that bingeing culture is no longer manageable for an individual,” she said.

“It does not discriminate - from professional educated career focused individuals, tradies, students, people looking for work, unemployed and homeless.

“It also affects many different cultures and impacts those communities in different ways.”

The substance Ms Anderson sees people struggle with the most is typically alcohol, which she attributes to how readily available it is and Australian drinking culture.

“It is readily available and socially acceptable; this can go unnoticed as alcohol is everywhere,” she said.

“In the broader Australian culture alcohol is included at celebrations, milestone events and

Ms Anderson said there are many reasons people struggle with alcohol abuse including but not limited to; peer pressure, selfmedication, to relieve emotional pain, to deal with trauma, and to numb and escape emotions.

The recent Shape of Australia survey found that almost one in five Victorian adults surveyed only felt slightly or not at all confident to reduce their alcohol

intake as part of efforts to eat healthier.

Ms Anderson said navigating substance use issues is an individual journey with no one size fits all solution and she encourages people who think they may be struggling to receive help.

“Seeking support to address the underlying issues that have potentially led to substance use is recommended,” she said.

“Substance use is multifaceted and best navigated with an interconnected holistic approach.

“Our counsellors at Gateway Health work with individuals using a person-centred approach.

“Basically, identifying and fostering strengths they already have to encourage the individual to achieve their goals.”

According to the Cancer Council Victoria, other ways people can reduce their alcohol intake includes setting small achievable goals with clear drinking limits, creating plans that don’t involve alcohol and opting for non-alcoholic alternatives.

GOTAFE provides hands-on interaction with animals Wednesday, January 22, 2014

By STEVEN BURKE HUNDREDS of students aspiring to work in animal related industries have had hands-on experience with creatures of all shapes and sizes.

Goulburn Ovens TAFE (GOTAFE) is hosting the students from all over the state yesterday and today as part of its VET in schools program, which caters for years 10, 11 and 12 students pursuing animal and equine studies.

Everything from a couple of cheeky guinea pigs, some flighty chooks and a friendly horse called Billie were available for students to handle.

Benalla FCJ College students Claudia Vegter and Nicole Barrow are both aspiring to work in horse – related industries.

“The information is very good – it’s very fun and practical,” Nicole said.

Kyabram’s Chelsi Old enjoyed learning how to handle a guinea pig named Lucy.

“They’re a bit cheeky,” she said.

“I’d like to do volunteering with animals in the future.”

GOTAFE’s commercial manager of animal sciences, Celia Turnbull, said about 300 students came to the TAFE annually for the program, after which they would return to their homes and complete the rest of their course online.

AMBULANCE Victoria is urging locals to be on the lookout for snakes and know what to do if you, or someone you are with, are bitten.

Victoria’s snake season is typically between September and April, with sightings more common in the summer months and in rural areas.

Paramedics recently responded to a serious snake bite incident in Dargo, which saw crews manage a challenging case in a remote location.

AV clinical support officer David Moors said the Dargo patient felt light tingling in their lower leg before developing respiratory distress, cramping and nausea around two hours later.

“This incident occurred in a very remote location, quite a distance from the nearest hospital in Bairnsdale,” he said.

“Paramedics reapplied a pressure bandage and immobilised the limb to slow blood circulation to the affected area.

“The trip back from Dargo to Bairnsdale Hospital was just under two hours, so the crew arranged for another AV paramedic to meet them on their way back to administer antivenom while en route to hospital.”

The patient had improved and was experiencing no pain by the time they arrived at hospital.

AV director emergency management, Justin Dunlop, said paramedics had been responding to snake bite cases across the state much like the Dargo case throughout the summer, labelling the most recent incident a la timely reminder for people to know ti how to manage a snake bite. h Those suspected to have suffered a snake bite should always contact Triple Zero immediately.

“There’s an increased risk of snakes during the warmer months, particularly in places such as bushland, farms and campgrounds,” he said.

“Most snakes in Victoria are venomous and a bite can be life-threatening.

“It’s vital you know what to do while waiting for an ambulance – if a snake bite victim becomes unresponsive, you should follow danger, response, send for help, airway, breathing and CPR (DRSABC).

“For conscious patients, keep them still and reassured while waiting for help and only move them if it is too unsafe to stay put.

“Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage around the affected areas from the top to the bottom of the limb if possible.”

Symptoms that snake venom has entered your body may include dizziness, blurred vision, breathing difficulties, nausea, muscle weakness or paralysis.

“Take action around your home by keeping your property clear of rocks, logs and building materials and keeping grass short,” Mr Dunlop said.

SES ranks bolstered by willing volunteers

By RYAN MALCOLM NEW local SES volunteers could be responding to emergencies within the next six weeks, following a positive recruitment evening at Wangaratta’s Handley Street headquarters last Tuesday.

While only eight community members attended to learn more about the SES’ responsibilities, Wangaratta unit controller Jess Zuber said a number had committed to training with the unit with an eye to securing their place on a truck in the near future.

“They seemed really keen, they were happy just to see what we did, so we’ve had a few sign up and hopefully we can get a couple of new recruits out of that,” she said.

“Our goal is to have them on a truck by mid-February, so we’ll get them through a few weeks of the admin and then we’ll start to pump them into training and go from there. “(We’ve got) about 42 members, which sounds like a lot – but we’ve had 113 jobs so far this year, and that’s a lot of hours from only 40 volunteers.

“Probably out of that 40odd, maybe 25 to 30 are really operations, so there’s only that many people volunteering around work to respond and

Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll of Bright police said the local CFA was called after the 46-yearold man started a rubbish fire in his backyard.

“He was extremely confrontational with CFA members on arrival so the police were called,” he said.

“He was then also confrontational and entirely uncooperative with us which resulted in him being charged on summons with assault of police officers, hindering police as well as lighting a fire during a prohibited period.

“The CFA were able to access and put out the fire via the back fence.”

A VISITING hiker spent her Sunday night with search and rescue officers as her company after becoming disoriented on Mount Bogong.

The 52 year old woman from Castlemaine called local emergency services at around 7.30pm Sunday night after losing her way off an obscured section of Grey Hills Track and becoming dangerously close to running out of water and daylight.

Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll of Bright police said the Air Wing Search and Rescue helicopter was unable to airlift her out that night but dropped members of the team to keep her company before she was safely airlifted out around 9.30am Monday morning.

“It’s a timely reminder to be fully prepared when you’re hiking, especially if going solo,” he said.

“It’s very fortunate she had a mobile phone in service and could contact us with her location.

“We also advise considering a satellite phone for no service areas, carrying extra water and food incase things go south.”

THE Treaty For Victoria set out to acknowledge the sovereignty of the First Nations and to improve the lives of Indigenous people.

Victoria has been a leader in the country in working towards reconciliation and by initiating discussions on a pathway to Treaty with a bipartisan approach to making it happen.

Australian society has come a long way, but a fundamental obstacle is that not all people are on board for the journey.

Whether it be a recognition of culture, protection of sacred land, communication between cultures or addressing community issues that exist in society, unfortunately the governments of the day and their oppositions seem further apart than ever.

The Coalition’s announcement that it will not support the Treaty is a step back for the movement that aims to support the collective of Indigenous people.

It would be fair to say the result of the Voice to Parliament referendum had an impact on this latest about turn by the state opposition, with Federal Coalition partners keen to make the most of that apparent groundswell against recognition by taking their same arguments to other Indigenous issues such as Treaty.

But while all the politics behind the Coalition’s decision to pull the pin is at this stage lacking, as are details behind the said trigger for their move which apparently was made last year, again the direction towards reconciliation has been set back.

Democracy is a great tool, but there are always one or more parties who wear the brunt of these decisions.

Overwhelming evidence to ban duck hunting WITH the Victorian Government due to make an announcement on the future of duck hunting by February, RSPCA Victoria, Animals Australia and Wildlife Victoria have released new data showing low numbers of duck hunters in marginal electorates compared to people who actively support the three animal organisations, which are united in calling for a ban.

The government had six months to adopt or respond to the formal recommendation of a ban in the tabled report from the Select Committee Inquiry into Recreational Native Bird Hunting.

This deadline is soon approaching, and the lives of Victoria’s native waterbirds and quail are hanging in the balance.

The Select Committee made its recommendation to ban native bird hunting based on clear and considerable evidence and we cannot see any reason why the Allan Government would not accept and implement that recommendation.

The injury, pain, suffering, distress and death of our native birds through hunting is completely unacceptable and data shows the majority of Victorians agree.

The evidence is there, and other states like Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia banned it up to three decades ago with people still able to enjoy the great outdoors.

Anything other than a decision to ban duck and quail hunting for good will simply leave us asking: why is Victoria different?

Given this clear evidence, and the precedent set by Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia up to three decades ago, it’s hoped the Victorian Government will ban native bird hunting.

Each animal rights organisation uses a different criterion for what constitutes a “supporter”, with some as spurious as people who have clicked on one of their campaign links over the past five years.

From a data perspective, it’s fundamentally flawed.

A year ago, the RSPCA and SSAA Victoria each commissioned credible research into public opinions on duck hunting in Victoria.

The RSPCA research was statewide; the SSAA Victoria research focused on seven Labor-held outer metropolitan and regional electorates.

Both asked, “Would you support new rules on duck hunting to protect native species and allow hunting to continue, such as introducing mandatory training for duck hunting licence holders?”.

The RSPCA research found that 62 per cent of voters statewide would support such a change, and the SSAA Victoria

research found that 56 per cent of voters in Labor-held electorates would support such a change.

It’s little wonder that this year, instead of conducting credible research, the RSPCA went out to hoodwink the government with dodgy data...the real stuff doesn’t tell a story that the animal rights movement wants people to hear.

Guilty plea after workplace incident A LEADING disability employer could face a significant fine after a worker suffered a fractured wrist and serious burns when his hand was trapped inside a machine in late 2021.

Lawyers for Merriwa Industries appeared before Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Monday, pleading guilty to a single workplace safety charge stemming from the November 29 incident.

The court heard two workers had been overseeing the use and alteration of a machine to shrink wrap

wood products at the Greta Road factory, and had disabled an interlock located on an access panel, which would ordinarily cut power to the machine if the panel was opened.

The workers installed a bar inside the machine to improve the quality of shrink wrapping, but failed to reconnect the interlock.

WorkSafe prosecutor Adele Hutchings told the court one worker had attempted to access the machine around 8am on November 29, in order to adjust

plastic film which was not lined up correctly.

The worker’s hand was said to have been pinned by a heat bar for up to six minutes, after it unexpectedly rose within the machine.

The court heard the bar could be heated to 160 degrees Celsius, although it was unclear exactly how hot the bar was at the time of the incident.

The worker required skin grafts and only returned to light duties in the work place on January 17 the following year.

The machine had previously been used to shrink wrap cans, and manufacturers explicitly warned against modifying the machine, operating the machine with safety measures disabled, or wrapping items not intended by the manufacturer, according to Ms Hutchings.

WorkSafe employees visited the site immediately following the incident.

The machine had passed a risk assessment less than two weeks prior.

E Daniel told the court the incident had not been the result of “wilful blindness” by the company, noting only two employees had knowledge the interlock had been disabled.

She said the incident had been a result of “absentmindedness” and had not been a systemic failure by senior staff, but instead a “failure in communication” by employees.

The court heard Merriwa Industries was a leading employer of people living with a disability in the

community, with Ms Daniel arguing a conviction would be “devastating” and a large fine would “unduly punish workers”.

Ms Hutchings argued the likelihood of risk eventuating had been high, and the extent of the risk had been realised in the worker’s injuries.

Merriwa Industries faces a maximum fine of more than $450,000, while WorkSafe also sought costs of more than $4000.

The matter will return for sentence next week.

Paramedics urge caution amid inland drowning concerns

IT was a case of “the show must go on” when the Wangaratta Baptist Church held the second of its Free Summer Fun Days in Apex Park on Wednesday.

Despite the dismal forecast, the rain held off long enough for kids to enjoy rides on the super slide for about an hour in the morning, taking a break while it rained, but getting another hour in on the slide during the afternoon after it was dried off.

Event coordinator Pastor Aaron Wardle said while numbers were a little down for the second event, about 300 people still came along to have some free family fun.

He said face painting was another popular attraction, running throughout the event, and

along with the sausage sizzle, it kept children entertained when it rained.

“Over the two events (including the first day at WSAC pool) we welcomed about 1100 people and served up 1200 sausages,” he said.

“It went really well, with over 100 volunteers also helping out over the two days, which is really appreciated.”

Pastor Aaron said the church has plans to run another event on Easter Saturday, as they did last year, which drew their biggest crowd so far.

He said pressure from the rising cost of living, and expenses including insurance cover which now restricted their access to inflatable attractions - limited what they were able to do.

“We’d like to keep doing these sorts of things for the community when we can, but whether we can maintain three events a year, we’ll have to see as things go forward,” he said.

“Council has been very supportive (with funding) and we’ll be looking to see if there are other grants around to help facilitate events and make them more sustainable.

“Providing a place for the community gather that’s free, fun and where they can be fed, those

things are few and far between - particularly during school holidays when parents are looking for different ways to entertain the kids.”

Pastor Aaron said he’d received lots of positive feedback from those who came along, with many people coming up to say thank you before they left.

He said despite the financial challenges, the church was committed to keeping their community events free.

“We don’t want anyone to have to put their hand in their pocket at all, so it’s accessible to everyone - that’s really important to us,” he said.

“We want to bless the community and bring some hope in a practical way.”

PARAMEDICS and lifesavers are urging local residents to take care in and around inland waterways over the remainder of the summer, following an uptick in fatal and non-fatal drownings in Victoria.

Life Saving Victoria (LSV)’s 2022/23 drowning report shows there were 19 fatal drownings at inland waterways during the last financial year – a 14 per cent increase on the 10-year average.

There were also 12 non-fatal drownings at Victorian inland waterways, representing a 13 per cent increase on the 10-year average.

With local populations at holiday hotspots doubling or even tripling throughout summer, LSV research and evaluation manager Hannah Calverley said locals were also at risk of inland water incidents.

“In Victoria, inland waterways record just as many, if not more, fatal drownings as our coastal locations,” she said.

“What’s more concerning is over a third of inland drownings occur within the person’s own residential postcode – it’s locals drowning in their local waterways.

“It’s important to not be complacent about water safety wherever you are, be that at home or visiting the local river or lake.”

Ambulance Victoria director emergency management Justin Dunlop said it was important to be aware of the hazards associated with rivers and lakes, noting the range of unique drowning risks associated with these environments.

“Getting in trouble while swimming in a river, lake or dam isn’t the only danger – a lot of our call outs to inland waterways are where people have unintentionally found themselves in a body of water from things such as slips and falls,” he said.

“These situations can be more dangerous, because the patient is totally unprepared to be in that body of water and can sustain significant injuries.”

Two thirds of all drownings at inland waterways are believed to involve alcohol or drug use.

Ducks ready to take to the water in fishing club’s annual regatta

SPECTATORS will gather for family fun and to witness all the racing action, when the King River and District Fishing Club holds its annual Rubber Duck Regatta at the Gentle Annie Caravan and Camping Reserve on Saturday.

Locals have been snapping up their rubber ducks in readiness for the big race, hoping they will be first to cross the line and secure a major prize.

Club secretary Regina Callaway said the always popular event is its major fundraiser for the year.

She said the money raised goes towards the club’s running costs and helps keep membership costs low so it’s accessible to everyone.

“The regatta is a family-friendly event highlighting our club and what we’re about,” she said.

“We pre-adopt 300 ducks before race day, but we’ll have a limited number on the day for adoption too.

“We cannot thank Gentle Annie Caravan Park enough for allowing us to run the event at their park it’s the perfect spot on the banks of the King River.”

Regina said the event has been running since 2017 and is getting stronger each year, with prizes made possible courtesy of some very generous sponsors.

Pimp A Duck and Best Dressed competitions, with both winners chosen by people’s choice, and great prizes up for grabs.

Both are free to enter, with everyone encouraged to bring along a duck they have pimped up at home to put on display, or wear their best duck outfit and waddle the runway for a chance to win the best dressed prize.

“It’s all about having some fun,” said Regina.

A sausage sizzle will be available on the day, by gold coin donation.

The King River and District Fishing Club Rubber Duck Regatta will be held this Saturday with a barbecue at 1pm, the ducks to race at 2pm and all welcome to come along.

The special effort for February is a container/vase of pink tones.

Sports club to honour four of its finest

FOUR former runners and dedicated servants to local running will be awarded with life memberships from the Wangaratta Sports Club at this weekend’s carnival.

Wally Pasquali, Clayton Fraser, John Gannon and Greg Strano will be receiving life memberships with the club this weekend in honour of their dedicated volunteer service and participation in local running.

All four former runners at the carnival have since taken on various roles with the Wangaratta Sports Club in order to maintain the ongoing success of the historic event.

Wangaratta Sports Club president, Paul Hughes said all four of the club’s newest life members have shown a great passion for the sport over the years which was important to celebrate.

“We have a lot of great workers on the committee volunteering their time for the sports club and running the carnival for long periods of time and that’s most of the committee really, from my point of view it’s fantastic,” he said.

“They’re people who are passionate about the sport and give their time every year to make sure this event is put on for Wangaratta.

A HELPING HAND: John Gannon and Greg Strano will be awarded for their dedicated volunteer service to the Wangaratta Sports Carnival with life memberships at the Wangaratta Sports Club.

“There are legendary people who have committed to the carnival for decades over its 100 plus years.

“People like Geoff Webster, he’s around 90 years old, his family business Webster’s Electrical has been supporting the carnival since he was a kid, so we do have a lot of support like that which is great.”

Greg Strano has thrown himself into helping the carnival in whatever way he could since joining the committee.

He is a regular at fundraising days and is always available where there is work to be done, including putting his hands in his pockets and funding coming in.

His biggest achievement as a runner was winning the Echuca Gift in back to back years over different distances, with the first being 120m and the second win coming over 400m.

Best known for his work as a football coach, John Gannon turned to running when most

sportsmen are usually considering retirement.

His best performances included winning the 200m and 800m at the Wangaratta carnival on separate occasions.

Under his business, Gannon has been sponsoring the 800m at the carnival for some time and has become a hard-working committee member.

Clayton Fraser begun running as a way to keep fit during his rugby off-seasons.

A former winner of the 400m at the Stawell Gift and the Burramine Gift, Fraser has turned into a willing committee member at the Wangaratta Sports Club as an all-round good guy who always has a smile on his face.

Turning to running to help with his football, Wally Pasquali became a well-known local figure with highlights including a finalist at the Stawell Gift and a winner of the Wangaratta Gift and Burramine Gift among others.

Since hanging up the spikes, Pasquali has contributed not only as a committee member at the carnival, but as its major sponsor for several years under his Yes Optus Wangaratta store.

The Wangaratta Sports Carnival will take centre stage at the Wangaratta Showgrounds this Saturday with the woodchop from 11am onto the running from 2:30pm.

While the squad has yet to be confirmed, the top order will look vastly different to last year, with the top three run-scorers last carnival unavailable for selection.

Import Harkaran Mann (298 runs at 99.33), Wangaratta Magpies star Pranav Menon (241

at 60.25), and South African Koot Pienaar (219 at 43.8) will all not feature in the squad, meaning some fresh talent will need to stand up.

“About six players from last year are heading down,” Kelly confirmed.

“The squad’s probably 95 per

cent picked, we’ve got 12 definite at this stage but we’d like to take 13, there are a couple of guys still swinging.

“Those three (Mann, Menon, Pienaar) were three quality batters who would’ve been ideal in Provincial.

“So the batting’s probably a

bit thin when you compare it to last year, as well as the fact we’re stepping up a grade as well.”

The WDCA will confirm the full squad for the 2024 Melbourne Country Week Cricket Carnival in the coming weeks, ahead of the squad’s first match on Monday, January 12.

Juvenile’s break maidens for Weeding

By WILLSON MACK CRAIG Weeding bagged two winners in just as many days with a duo of young gallopers snapping their maidens.

Ashau Valley ($6.90) won his first race in his sixth start, saluting at Benalla in race three’s maiden by a touch under half a length, while it took Coomoroo Lady ($4.20) just two starts to break through as she ran home to a half a length win in race three at Albury on Monday.

“They were both dual accepted so we split them apart and luckily it was the right call,” Weeding said.

Ashau Valley got a lovely ride from hoop Jake Duffy at Benalla, sitting two wide with cover before running home nicely.

“Ashau Valley got a really good ride from Jake (Duffy),” Weeding said.

“He followed the favourite and came straight off the back of him and ran home better so he looks a horse with some nice potential.

“We’ll keep him in work because he’s going pretty well so we’ll find him a race in the coming days.”

Three-year-old filly Coomoroo Lady settled midfield on the fence at Albury, outrunning her rivals at the last 200m.

“Coomoroo Lady was really good, I thought she settled nicely,” Weeding said.

“She’s a horse that’s still probably 12 months away so we were a little surprised that she did as well as she did.

“She looks a genuine stayer, I think she’ll get 2000m or more but we’ll take her to the paddock now and give her a bit of a break.”

Weeding will have three runners at Wangaratta tomorrow with Autumn Rock (race one), Big Day Out (race six) and No Quarantine (race seven) all accepted.

Thursday’s Australia Day Eve meeting is set to be a cracker with plenty of racing action, live music from Scott & Amanda, happy hour drinks until the start of race three and the Grand Oak’s Room will be open for all.

“Autumn Rock will back-up from Benalla and needs to show us something,” Weeding said.

“Big Day Out resumes with big weight (64.5kg, claims 2kg) but I think he could be competitive in that 64 grade.

“We tried No Quarantine at the mile last start and that didn’t work so he’s back to 1200m and should improve sharply.”

The local horseman will then go to Wagga on Friday, followed by attacking Tumbarumba’s cup meeting on Saturday.

Weeding said he enjoys taking his horses to country cup meetings.

“We’ve got a few owners who enjoy going to the country cup meetings and making a day out of it,” he said.

“We’re lucky with where we’re located that we have easy access to go to so many different places.

“Non-TAB country meetings also give some of our horses more of a chance to win at that lower grade.”

Juniors prepared for Country Week finals

THE last round of Junior Country Week matches before finals was conducted on Sunday, with several Wangaratta and District Cricket Association teams winning through to the deciders.

The under 12 derby saw Wangaratta Blue triumph over their Gold counterparts, with WDCA Blue making 4/201 off the back of a brilliant half century from Byron Dodd (52 rtno from 64 deliveries).

WDCA Gold fought hard, with several batters making starts but Blue were too good, with Dodd and Louis Sanderson combining to take 4/17 between them, restricting WDCA Gold to 8/105 from 40 overs.

The two under 13 sides also took to the field against each other at South Wangaratta, with WDCA Gold’s 8/152 failing to surpass Blue’s 7/160.

Samuel Elkington helped WDCA Blue off to a strong start with a handy 32 not out, with handy runs coming from Charlie O’Brien (21) and Jimi Pell (21).

WDCA Gold were tight in the field, producing three run outs.

Austin Morris’s 53 retired not out was the highlight of the WDCA Gold innings, while Findlay Duff provided some handy top order runs with his knock of 26, while Baxter McLeod took 3/28 with the ball.

WDCA Gold failed to form strong batting partnerships after Nate Leith and Noah White piled on 28 for the second wicket, with the side eventually bowled out for 115.

McCarthy was the damage dealer for WDCA Blue, finishing with 3/1 from his two overs,

while Gus Marek (2/8) and Oscar Edwards (2/10) took some poles themselves.

The under 15 side will play in the grand final against CAW Country after receiving a forfeit victory against CAW. The under 16s had a convincing victory over CAW, chasing down the 10/113 total in less than 15 overs without a wicket lost.

Losing the toss and sent in to bowl, Jed Marek (3/21) and Jonty Priest (3/16) led the charge, with

Hitanshu Pillay’s 26 not out the highest score CAW could muster.

In reply, Priest (58*) and Will Graham (35*) produced a flawless display of opening batting to chase down the target and win through to the grand final by 10 wickets.

WDCA teams will play finals in the under 12 (Blue and Gold), under 15 and under 16 competitions on Sunday, January 28, with matches to be played across Albury and Wodonga.

MT HOTHAM-based alpine skiers Greta Small, Larry Laidlaw and Louis Muhlen-Schulte have made a solid start competing on the world stage for Australia in the new year.

Three-time Olympian Small, from Porepunkah, competed in two super-g and one downhill event at his first World cup for 2024 at Altenmark-Zauchensee, Austria.

Small finished in 54th place in the super-g and 43rd in the downhill.

A week earlier in Adelboden, Switzerland, 2018 Olympian Laidlaw made a successful return to competition in his first event of the season after recovering from injury, finishing in 38th place in the World Cup giant slalom race.

The result is just one place behind his best World Cup finish of 37th which he achieved in January 2023 in Schladming, Austria.

Joining Laidlaw in the Adelboden giant slalom event was Harrietville’s Louis MuhlenSchulte, with the 2022 Olympian finishing in 45th place.

All three, together with fellow Australian team members, have further World Cup events in the weeks ahead.

Plenty of excitement at Wahgunyah Speedway

By DEAN THOMPSON WAHGUNYAH Speedway provided another terrific night of entertainment for a large crowd on Saturday night with all club classes in action and wins going the way of Felicity Roycroft in both the Ladies Sports Sedans and the Sports Sedans against the boys.

Leighton Evans won Production Sedans, Justin Brockley won the Goulburn Ovens Sedan Association final, Zack Erickson won the Junior Sedans, Peter Schmetzer won the Unlimited Sedans and Michael Fleming-Robertson took victory in the Standard Saloon class.

Also, on race night there was some demonstrations from the Vintage Sprintcars and Humpy Holdens (FJ Holdens).

In the Goulburn Ovens Sedans Association’s latest points aggregate event, a former Victorian champion came up with a feature race win a week after relinquishing the title to Albury’s Daniel McCarten.

Corowa local Billy O’Donoghue claimed a race win in the first of four qualifiers of the night with each driver competing in three of those.

O’Donoghue finished ahead of Marcus Maclean and Stuart Balins.

Maclean won heat three in front of new Victoria five ranked racer Brandon Lovell and Mitch Watts with Brockley taking a heat win in the last qualifier in front of Robbie Miller and Justin Ewert.

Another first-year senior racer Anthony Hanson then won the third heat race in a close finish with Evans followed by Anderson with barely any distance between the three of them.

In the Ladies Sports Sedans Roycroft stormed to victory by almost 10 seconds over Chloe Creek and Tarrah Johanson.

Another win to Roycroft in

the second heat was a much closer affair with Cobie McGraw this time in second and Emma Threlfall third.

With six laps allocated for the final Roycroft set about dominating this race with seven and a half second between her and Johanson at the finish line.

In the Sports Sedan class

Roycroft began the night with a win in front of Rhys Collins and Daryl Joosten.

Craig Claridge, who has recently been in Crash and Bash racing, returned to Sedan racing with a win in heat two in front of Tristan McGraw and Bradin Claridge, one of Craig’s sons.

Roycroft then won the final heat race, one of five she had won for the night.

The up to 1500cc powered Junior Sedans were on track next with Zach Erickson Wangaratta’s number one Junior driver claiming the win in the first of three heats in front of Jaylen Knight and his sister Allie Erickson.

Micheal Fleming-Robertson had some stiff competition to compete with in Standard Saloons with Josh Campbell and Trevor Evans on track and Fleming-Robertson got off to a quick start with a win in heat race one over Campbell and Rhyse Lavender.

Fleming-Robertson also claimed the win in the second heat race with Evans and Campbell following him before he clean swept the night’s qualifying races winning heat three ahead of Campbell and Evans.

BELLA Pasquali will return to run in the local gift at the Wangaratta Sports Carnival since winning the Women’s Stawell Gift last year.

The 103rd Wangaratta Sports Carnival will take place on January 27 at the Wangaratta Showgrounds with runners, including Bella, taking centre stage at 2.30pm.

After a rocky start to the 2023/24 season with a slight hamstring injury, Bella said she has done well in the gifts she’s competed in so far.

“After the Stawell Gift my handicap’s been a little bit harder but I’ve still been going well and I’ve still enjoyed them all,” she said.

“We have ‘states’ down in Melbourne in late February and ‘nationals’ in Adelaide in mid-April and then I’ll do a few other meets down in Melbourne to try and have the best chance I can to be in the team.”

Entry to the Wangaratta Sports Carnival is free to spectators to enjoy more than 20 events from running to wood chopping with refreshments available throughout the carnival.

YOUNG Turner Pearson has been overwhelmed with community support as he prepares to take on his bike to his first state championships in Melbourne this weekend.

The 13 year-old will be riding at the AusCycling BMX Freestyle Victorian State Championships at Rampfest on January 28 with a passionate support team behind him.

After winning the 13 and under BMX North East Skate Park Series in Albury to progress to state, Turner was approached by local construction company Jake Foss Construction for a sponsorship.

To celebrate the partnership, Turner had his own t-shirts designed and set to be made by Steers Clothing who offered the shirts for Turner without cost.

Turner said he has been blown away by the community support invested in him.

“I am extremely grateful and fortunate that these local businesses have supported me,” Turner said.

“I am just a kid from the county, but going to the city to compete against the best in Victoria makes me feel armed with the support of my community. It makes me feel like I am in with a chance.

“I absolutely am stoked with my shirts and I wear them with pride every time I ride.”

The Galen Catholic College student has been a member of the Wangaratta Youth Council and worked with council to implement local projects, partnerships with local groups and businesses to support bike riding.

Some of those involvements include encouraging young people to be involved in the Dig Days at West End Cycles to let young riders build areas to ride and looking into the future ideas around a massive and inclusive bike riding facility that has been proposed.

He has also supported and worked with Headspace to build

“I like getting involved in things locally to try and make change and help growth. I think young people need to step up to get their ideas and voices heard,” he said.

“It’s awesome that some of my ideas and suggestions have been considered by adults on council.”

The 13-year-old has been involved in freestyle BMX for the past 18 months, training for more than 20 hours a week at his local skate park.

Turner said he has always had a

passion for riding bikes, and found his calling under the guidance and training of the West End Cycles staff.

“They have inspired me, coached me, pushed me and helped me become more focused on making it in the sport of freestyle BMX,” he said.

“I feel so grateful that these people have encouraged and supported me through all the early stages of getting into the sport.”

Turner has also found further passion in the sport through mentor Al Taylor, from Wodonga-based Al’s Skate Co, an indoor skatepark specialising in skatepark lessons with a twist on mental health awareness.

in pursuit of riding, but in ter terms of his mindset on life.

“Being mentored by Al has been a game-changer for me in terms of mindset; he is a really down to earth person and he has a way of making everyone feel include,” he said.

“When I ride at competitions he runs I know I’m with ‘my people’.

“I hope I can be like Al with the people around me, and I definitely try to help younger riders.”

In preparation for the state championships this weekend, Turner has been training hard during his school holidays which has taken him to places including Adelaide.

Turner said he was stoked he was having the opportunity to ride

at a high level with support from family, friends and the community.

“I am aiming to do the very best I can and do myself and my crew proud,” he said.

“I worked hard throughout the whole North East Skate Park Series and this feeling left me wanting to push myself through to the next challenge.

“Training leading up to ‘state’ has been a massive commitment, but I keep thinking back and knowing that I’ve put in the work to take home the title.

“I would love to walk away from the Victorian Championships with a medal, hopefully to continue to ride and to continue to improve, that’s the ultimate goal.”

MATT Allen’s strong summer of tennis continued on Saturday, taking out section one in fine fashion.

Allen’s score of 23-13 was in a league of its own with the next closest being Kevin Callahan (19-13).

Section two was tight but it was Carmine Adamo (1911) who got the jump over Michael Clark (18-12) and Fraser Bennet (17-13).

Mason Scholes reigned supreme in section three with a finishing score of 2317 ahead of Ashley Weston (21-18), Jim Gales (21-21) and Mike Lairson (20-20) who were hot on his tail.

Andrew Cope was a clear winner in section four with the best score of the day of 24-10, while Pat Flynn (1917) finished runner-up.

Section five’s David Godkin also claimed the elusive 24(-17) games with Beth Cope (20-21), Russel O’Brien (19-22) and Geoff Allen (19-22) not far behind.

The final section of the day, section six saw Max McAuliffe (21-13) claim a tight victory over John Shanley (20-14).

Chris Randell, Jodie Fruend, Paul King, and Graeme Smith were the pick of the rinks with a big win over Chris Langdon’s side (28-13), while Trevor Selwood, Laurie McDonald, Mark Allan, and Leon Quartermain won by five (1813) with the same margin going to Maurie Braden, Ethan Fruend, Jan Hermassoo, and Brian Challman (22-17).

“Warrnambool are back up there, they were pretty

strong last year in Division 2.

“They play on some nice venues though, so that’ll be nice, the first three games are all on Premier Cricket grounds.

“We’ve sort of hovered between Division 2 and 3 over the last 30 or 40 years, so that’ll be a fair jump for them.”
