POLICE are continuing to hunt down perpetrators, as part of a concerted effort to stem the incidence of family violence and intimidationrelated offences in the rural city.

Latest crime data for the Wangaratta local government area saw the region record a 1.1 per cent

increase in family violence offences last calendar year, following a 20 per cent increase the previous year.

Some 632 instances of family violence were recorded for the region, accounting for an incidence rate of 2164.3 per 100,000 population, well above the state rate of 1364.7.

It’s a trend which Wangaratta region Superintendent Joy Arbuthnot believes needs to be continually addressed.

“While we saw a slight increase in overall family violence cases in the last 12 months, it’s really heartening to see that the

increase has dramatically slowed compared to the previous reporting period,” she said.

“However, one case of family violence is one too many and police are absolutely committed to hunting down perpetrators and holding them to account.

“Teams of detectives and uniform officers are turning up on the doorsteps of known family violence perpetrators on a daily basis, putting them on notice and reminding them that any breach of an intervention order will land them in court.

Family violence in rural city under microscope ■

The rural city also recorded a

marked increase in the number of non-family violence-related common assaults, which rose by 20.7 per cent to represent a 10-year high.

Supt Arbuthnot said there had been a number of contributing factors which led to an increase

in common assaults.

“There were a number of factors behind the increase in assaults, including disputes between parties known, such as neighbours and other acquaintances that were not family-related,” she said.

“While it was fantastic to see

pubs and licenced venues back to full capacity over the summer period after what was a tough 2021, too many people took their celebrations too far, getting involved in fights and injuring others who were simply trying to enjoy themselves.”

NBN fixed wireless to lift in rural areas

INDI’S rural communities will have access to a higher speed NBN network following a $480 million investment by the Liberal and Nationals Government in the 2022-23 Federal Budget.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher said the investment in NBN Co’s non-commercial fixed wireless network will significantly improve the quality of services provided over the NBN fixed wireless and satellite networks.

“This means more people can be served by NBN fixed wireless, it means higher speed services on the NBN fixed wireless network, and it means households and business customers can use higher amounts of data.

“The upgrade will expand the fixed wireless footprint coverage by up to 50 per cent, enabling 120,000 additional premises to access fixed wireless services instead of Sky Muster satellite services,” Mr Fletcher said.

This upgrade will see NBN offer new higher-speed services to the fixed wireless network: 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) to all 750,000 premises able to access the new, expanded coverage footprint, and a 250 Mbps service will be available to 85 per cent of premises.

It also means higher speeds during the “network busy hour” - the time of day when there are more internet users, typically around 8pm.

With some NBN satellite users being moved to fixed wireless during this, other NBN satellite users will see improved internet performance due to fewer users.

Indi independent MP Helen Haines welcomed the announcement from the government.

“It is a major issue in Indi and across regional and rural Australia and I have been calling for more investment for years,” Dr Haines said.

“It’s more than a year since the government announced the NBN was ‘built and fully operational’.

“Here in Indi we have known that was in no way true, and this announcement shows the government knew too.

“What today’s announcement does not do is get rid of the government’s terrible policy of forcing regional councils to

stump up hundreds of millions of dollars to finish the NBN build through its Regional Co-Investment Fund.

“People in the cities aren’t being asked to pay this money, and people in the regions shouldn’t be expected to pay twice to fix the government’s mistakes.”

Dr Haines said the latest announcement includes promises of faster speeds, but regional Australians have been promised faster speeds that failed to materialise.

“That’s why I introduced my Faster Internet for Regional Australia Bill which would force the telcos to provide 25 Mbps as the minimum speed on average at all times,” she said.

“And it would put those standards in actual law so they’re impossible to dodge.”

Surveying y g of species p helps p in downgrade g from criticallyy endangered g MORE work will be done to protect a rare species, the Golden Sun Moth, after healthy populations were discovered behind Wangaratta’s HP Barr Reserve over summer.

The Golden Sun Moth (Synemon plana) was surveyed by Trust for Nature between October to January, with hundreds emerging in late December.

It’s a species that was previously listed as ‘critically endangered’ under the Australian Government Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), but with more discovery last year, the moth’s status has been downgraded to ‘vulnerable’.

The moth’s lifespan is only about three days but during this time there is high mating activity to reproduce and lay eggs for the next generation, something that was witnessed during the surveying period.

Trust for Nature regional manager North East Will Ford explained the moths themselves are largely underground and they emerge usually late spring or early summer once it starts to warm up and dry out.

“They only live for about three days and we were seeing them up to early January with the greatest populations on Christmas Eve when there were hundreds,” he said.

“Not long after they emerged the males and females were mating and then the females laid the eggs at the base of the wallaby grass.”

Mr Ford noted the wallaby grass is the preferred habitat for the moths but they tend to populate in Chilean

needle grass as well, which is unusual.

He said the area at the back of the HP Barr Reserve is about 60 per cent wallaby grass so it’s ideal for them.

After Mr Ford first sighted the species in December 2020, Wangaratta council agreed that during the hatching period they would not cut the grass in the area which allowed for the grass to flower, set seed and germinate.

Mr Ford said although the moths were listed as ‘critically endangered’, which is one step off extinction, their rarity lessened in December when the species was reclassified as ‘vulnerable’.

He said what tends to happen when a species reaches critically endangered is it receives a lot more government funding and for the Golden Sun Moth more surveying such as what took place in Wangaratta commenced.

“The interesting thing about this species is that you don’t tend to find them in town in an area that’s been fairly highly modified,” he said.

Trust for Nature received funding through a Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning grant and they will do some work on the site around weed management and spot spray out some common lawn weeds like paspalum.

They will spread some more wallaby grass seed around the site as well to get more ground cover.

Signage will be erected to alert people of the importance of the site and also to inform people about why it doesn’t get slashed at certain times of the year.

It will also include some general information about the moths and fencing including bollards along the track that runs from the Scout Hall to the Ovens River.

CRIMINAL charges are set to be brought against three men who oversaw the 2014 sale of Wangaratta’s Bruck Textiles business, a Wangaratta court has heard.

Former Bruck boss Geoffrey Parker faced Wangaratta Magistrates Court for a filing hearing on Monday, having been formally charged by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) almost eight years after the sale of the business.

Commonwealth prosecutors are set to allege Parker had entered into an agreement or transaction with intentions of preventing or significantly reducing the recovery of entitlements by employees during the 2014 sale to Australian Textile Mills (ATM).

It had previously been alleged assets had been moved between Bruck and ATM, the latter registered by Parker and Bruck principal shareholder Philip Bart only five weeks before it acquired Bruck for $1 in July 2014.

Of the 190 Wangaratta-based Bruck employees made redundant as a result of the sale, 60 were not re-hired by the new owners, and were ultimately left to rely on Federal Government payments totaling nearly $3.8m to subsidise leave, long service and other accrued entitlements which were left unpaid after Bruck was liquidated.

The matter was subsequently reported to ASIC, which launched an inquiry shortly after the sale.

On Monday, the court heard charges against Bart and former Bruck chief financial officer Ron Johnson were also expected to be executed in due time.

An extended adjournment was deemed necessary to ensure charges could be laid against the two co-accused.

Magistrate Victoria Campbell ordered a hand-up brief be prepared by April 22, before the matter returns to court for committal mention on August 4.

ALP visit has health focus

HEALTH and ageing sectors will be the focus of a visit to Indi today by Opposition Assistant Minister for Health and Ageing Ged Kearney.

Ms Kearney and Labor candidate for Indi Nadia David will meet with key workers and leaders of the sector in Wangaratta and Bright to discuss local issues.

“One of the key reasons I wanted Ged to come up to Indi was so she could get a strong understanding of the

significant issues facing rural and regional Victorians in accessing timely, affordable health care and aged services,” Ms David said.

“I want Ged to hear from locals about the problems getting in to see a GP, the out of pocket costs we have to pay if we receive urgent care at a regional hospital that people in cities just don’t have to pay, as well as the staff shortages and gaps in services.”

Ms David and Ms Kearney

will meet with workers at the Wangaratta Hospital at 11am to hear about issues raised by local nurses and doctors.

“I’ve been hearing from Wang locals and friends in medicine that Wangaratta Hospital is not traveling very well,” Ms David said “I want to talk with workers on the ground to see what needs to be done and how Ged and I can help.”

The pair will travel to Bright and tour the Bright Hospital

and Aged Care Hostel with Alpine Health chief executive, Nick Shaw, to see the site for the proposed multi-million dollar Bright Hospital Precinct development.

Mr Shaw met with Shadow Minister for Aged Care, Clare O’Neill and Ms David recently to talk through the proposed development of the precinct and the possibility of Labor support for the project.

“Obviously, we aren’t going to irresponsibly throw

our support behind a project of this magnitude and sensitivity right before an election without taking the time to review it properly in the context of the broader health and aged care systems,” Ms David said.

“But it’s fair to say Clare and the Shadow Cabinet are very keen to look at this further and see what we can do for Bright if we are elected.”

Ms David and Ms Kearney will return to Wangaratta for

a ‘Politics in the Pub’ event at the Pinsent Hotel commencing at 5:30pm.

“We would like anyone in the electorate who would like to come and hear Ged talk about health and ageing under a future Labor Government to come along.

“Ged has vast experience as a registered nurse and former president of the ACTU and she’s keen to talk health and aged care with Indi locals,” Ms David said.

culture and the yak-herding economy and give a glimpse of the rich mix of special mammals, birds, people and ecosystems that inhabit these wild places.

“The evening will also take a look at the exciting achievements of SRR over the past year including the climate forum, new monitoring guide, Bird ID events and field survey work,” Ms Enders said.

“We will also take be a brief look forward at what 2022 will bring for SRR including the implementation of two new projects in 2022: “Engage, connect and appreciate - The value of citizen science volunteers in North East Victoria” made possible through support from the Victorian government through the Victorian Landcare grants project, and

“Growing into a climate ready future” which was supported by the Victorian Government through the Community Minigrants Climate Ready Hume program.

Local climate projects funded TWO local community groups are among 11 in the North East taking the lead on local climate change action thanks to a Victorian Government Community Mini-Grants Program.

The 11 groups will share in $87,000 in funding, with Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability Inc. receiving $8850 to host a Community of Influencers roundtable event, while Sustainable King Valley Inc has received $5700 to establish a Sustainable Food Hub in the Upper King Valley (see further story page 29).

The program is part of Hume’s Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (DELWP) funded by the $9.32 million Supporting Our Regions to Adapt program.

THE Victorian Travel Voucher Scheme returns today from 2pm, with 140,000 vouchers up for grabs.

The State Government scheme provides successful applicants with a $200 reimbursement when expenses of more than $400 are incurred across accommodation, attraction and experiences.

A changing mindset in our community FAMILY violence has been around for a long time but has really started to be unearthed with victims coming forward more over the past decade.

Changes in legislation have given police more powers to prosecute offenders and protect victims of crime through legal actions such as AVOs. Funding for support agencies has also increased over the last few years giving victims greater comfort in knowing there will be professionals there to help them navigate their ways to a better life.

But as a community we all need to play a part in stopping the violence before it starts.

It‘s about the changing of a societal culture in the way we speak to each other and promoting the ideology that all people – man, woman or child – are equal.

This involves the use of thoughtful, non– biased language around children so they grow up as a new generation promoting this mindfulness of equality among all people.

The same goes for workplaces, schools, and sporting groups to focus on treating everyone with respect.

Proactive police work with known perpetrators has been a catalyst for the higher number of instances and a key element in the prevention of more serious offending.

It‘s timely that an event this Friday night talks about the very issue – the prevention of family violence in our community.

A high profile guest panel including Clementine Ford, Carly Findlay and Celeste Liddle will attend and provide some insight into their observations and how we might move forward as a community.

While family violence used to happen behind closed doors, it‘s events like this and changing attitudes in our community that can open these doors, shining a light on this scourge in our society.

Rail service fails North East travellers NORTH East Victorian rail/air travellers will definitely be short changed by not being included in the planned Sunshine airport link.

We wonder how and who has decided that very few passengers would use the service?

As travellers who currently use the rail/bus interchange to Tullamarine we would definitely stay on the train and change at Sunshine rather than brave the elements and grungy facilities at Broadmeadows to wait for a bus.

Fellow travellers we have talked to indicate likewise.

We also note similar sentiments from comments recently published in the Wangaratta Chronicle.

As pedestrians and rail travellers who regularly cross the Docker Street overhead footbridge we also continue to be disappointed by the lack of consideration given to above rail walkways at Wangaratta‘s revamped station.

Already we can imagine graffiti and smell human body fluids in the illustrated proposed subway tunnel published in the Chronicle.

Railway subways are never pleasant places, in our travel experiences.

They tend to be used as male urinals and for the application of mindless graffiti, both very evident in the underpasses currently in Wangaratta‘s Templeton Street and Rohan Street.

We are regular rail users as well as regular pedestrians crossing the current bridges.

We will not be frequenting the planned station underpass as pedestrians.

Bright lights will not make it a safe place for travellers.

Replacing the bridges or lowering the tracks has never been in the plan as far as we can see.

The ARTC says the Wangaratta community has been consulted, but has it been listened to? No. It appears Wangaratta will have a new modern station building.

We hope that like Wodonga‘s new station building that there is planning for including in our new station building acknowledgement of Wangaratta‘s considerable rail heritage.

Wangaratta was once the connecting hub for the King Valley line and also the Bright/ Beechworth lines and so an important freight destination.

Does the ARTC have capacity in its proposed plans to use some of its so–called community engagement funds to fund artists to paint local rail travel stories in this planned underpass?

The ARTC has not disclosed its budget for transforming the Wangaratta rail precinct.

Have your say on uni skill investment VICTORIANS can have their say on the state‘s universities as part of a new parliamentary inquiry.

The Legislative Assembly Economy and Infrastructure Committee is now welcoming public submissions for its probe into the tertiary sector‘s investment in skills.

The inquiry will consider Victorian universities‘ involvement in the provision of future skills.

This is an important opportunity for our committee to look at how our universities can play a greater role in supporting the pipeline of skilled workers required to ensure a growing economy.

There will be a focus on working towards a clean economy and regional skills in the areas of health, agriculture and community services.

We hope to hear from as many interested

stakeholders as possible over the life of this inquiry.

This could include but is certainly not limited to universities, other educational institutions offering degree qualifications, government bodies, industry associations, unions, think tanks and regional groups.

The committee also plans to hold public hearings and will report to parliament in late 2022.

Stationeers add the sparkle to station

By GRAHAM CLEMENTS THE Wangaratta Stationeers are a group of volunteers who have been ensuring that travellers arrive at an inviting railway station for the past 24 years.

They are part of a statewide group that endeavours to keep Victorian railway stations clean and their gardens green.

Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria has overall responsibility for the Stationeers.

It supplies them with hi-vis vests and basic equipment, such as a recently acquired whipper snipper.

The Stationeers’ activities include watering the plants, weeding the gardens, sweeping the platforms, picking up rubbish, and occasionally painting over graffiti.

The Wangaratta group was also responsible for organising local schools to create the many vibrant mural panels on the wall of the XPT platform.

Julie Sands has been one of the local Stationeers for three years.

“I got involved because a friend of mine, Robin, was a Stationeer, and I like doing something for our community, and I like railways and trains,” Julie said.

“I enjoy the friendship and it’s nice to get out and meet other people.

“We take turns watering the

“We also have a working bee every now and then.”

On the rubbish she picks up, Julie encourages others to “do the right thing, please use a bin”.

She wished she could do something about the state of the XPT ramp and surrounds, but it is currently

fenced off so the Stationeers can’t get to it.

“We work with the council, notifying them if the bins need to be emptied,” Julie said.

“I am delighted with the council’s recent redevelopment of the area, it looks terrific.”

She is particularly impressed by

the old water tower being turned into a colourful “beacon”.

Learn beekeeping basics A FUN session covering all things relating to bees will be held at the Wangaratta Library this evening.

Greg Whitehead from Milawa’s Walkabout Apiaries will lead the discussion about what’s needed to get started, what to expect, and the quirks of managing bees in the Australian landscape, from 6pm at the library in Docker Street.

“Having grown up in a beekeeping family, I have been hands-on with all that goes on with the business of bees,” Mr Whitehead said.

“From humble beginnings and a handful of beehives, my parents, Rod and Jen, built a little business that kept us fed and ever-busy as it grew.

“Now we manage over 1400 beehives, relocating them across the countryside as we seek out the best conditions for maintaining healthy bees and producing tasty honey.”

Calls for Vic parliament bullying review VICTORIAN crossbench MPs are pushing for an independent review into how the state’s parliament handles bullying and harassment claims.

The Justice Party will on Wednesday move a motion in the upper house calling for a Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission inquiry into the parliamentary complaints process.

It comes after Kaushaliya

Vaghela quit the Labor Party earlier this month after alleging systematic bullying.

“There is not a single mechanism for all who work here that ensures we can be held to the same standards of behaviour, that we can be safe, and that an independent workplace standards body is available to deal with complaints free from political interference,” Justice Party MP Tania Maxwell said in parliament on Tuesday.

“That’s why I’m moving for the VEOHRC to examine the adequacy of existing laws, policies, structures and complaint mechanisms relating to bullying and harassment in the Victorian parliament.”

She said the motion also asks the commission to look into whether the current processes require independence.

“My motion also asks the commission to advise on improvements and the estab-

lishment of an independent complaints body to manage and respond to complaints about bullying and harassment within the parliament,” she said.

Premier Daniel Andrews said work was already under way to review the bullying and harassment framework within parliament.

“Work is being done by the president and the Speaker, department of parliamentary services and the party

leadership ... we’ll be a much better parliament for that,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

“This is about culture but it’s also about making sure that anybody who has had an experience like that can safely come forward, tell their story and get the support and the justice.”

Mr Andrews hopes the review will be completed before the state election.

Concerns over spending as confidence sinks CONFIDENCE took another sharp tumble in the past week as Australians continued to fret over cost-ofliving pressures, raising concerns about the outlook for household spending.

New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that prior to the spike in petrol prices in recent weeks triggered by the war in Ukraine, household spending had perked up compared to a year earlier.

The weekly ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence index - a guide to future household spending

- dropped 4.8 per cent, falling to its lowest level since September 2020 when Victoria was enduring the second wave of COVID-19.

Consumer inflation expectations also rose by a further 0.4 percentage points to six per cent, a level not seen since 2011.

“The weakness in consumer sentiment is at odds with the strength in employment and reflects pressure on household budgets as nominal wage growth lags the jump in inflation,” ANZ head of Australian economics David Plank said.

“The weakness in consumer con-

fidence presents a growing nearterm risk to the outlook for household spending.”

The ABS said household spending grew 4.3 per cent in the year to January.

“Eased COVID-19 restrictions in January 2022 across most states saw consumers shift spending from their homes to hospitality and retail venues,” ABS head of macroeconomic statistics Jacqui Vitas said.

ALP to set up Kitching human rights award ANTHONY Albanese will seek to set up an award in the name of late senator Kimberley Kitching, as the prime minister accused the opposition leader of being in hiding following her death.

Following Senator Kitching’s funeral on Monday, Mr Albanese wrote to Labor’s national executive to ask for the establishment of a Kimberley Kitching Human Rights Award in recognition of her parliamentary work.

He said in the letter the award would go to “a member of the party who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the advancement of human rights in Australia or globally”.

It would be presented at ALP national conferences, which take place every three years.

Senator Kitching died earlier this month from a suspected heart attack, aged 52.

In the wake of her death, allegations surfaced the late Senator had been bullied and ostracised

by Labor MPs, particularly the party’s Senate leadership team.

While Mr Albanese has pledged to examine the party’s internal processes and make improvements, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has accused the opposition leader of being “gutless” on going to ground after the bullying allegations surfaced.

Speaking to reporters in Cairns, Mr Morrison said Mr Albanese’s promise of a review would not be the end of the matter.

“Serious allegations have been made ... about a toxic culture within the Labor Party, which the leader of the Labor Party Anthony Albanese is in hiding and won’t address,” he said.

“He can’t just dismiss away hard issues, and that’s not what prime ministers do.”

The prime minister did, however, welcome news of the award being set up in Senator Kitching’s name, saying it would be fitting recognition of her work.

Petrol prices remained on a sharp upward trajectory as a result of elevated global oil prices last week.

The Australian Institute of Petroleum said the national weekly average for petrol prices jumped by 14.9 cents in the past week to a record 212.5 cents a litre, after ranging from 210.4 cents to 214 cents.

Commonwealth Securities chief economist Craig James said filling up the car is the single biggest weekly purchase for most families.

He estimates it is costing the average family $297.50 a month to fill up the car, an extra $75 compared with the start of the year.

Mr Plank said increasing petrol prices have had a sharp impact on households’ confidence for both “current” and “future financial conditions” in the survey with the two sub-indices dropping 10.3 per cent and 8.4 per cent respectively during the past two weeks.

Kitten bodies dumped in Benalla bin TWO women have been banned from owning pets for the next decade after neglecting two kittens so badly they died and were left in a household waste bin.

RSPCA officers visited the Benalla home following reports the tenants had moved out of the property but left two dead kittens in the bathroom.

No kittens were found but two women outside admitted they had moved the kittens to the outside waste bin.

An investigation

found the kittens had died from starvation, dehydration and emaciation.

The women, both from Benalla in the state’s north, were charged and last week pleaded guilty when they faced an online magistrates court, the RSPCA said.

They were placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond, ordered to pay costs and were disqualified from owning animals for 10 years.

Green said it was maddening that cases of severe neglect continued to arise.

“These helpless kittens were denied the most basic standard of care, and both animals have died as a result,” Ms Green said.

This was a completely preventable outcome.”

“If your circumstances change and you are no longer able to care for your animal, you owe it to them to do the right thing and seek help or support.”

Mal makes finals in national art prize

LOCAL teacher Mal Webster has been named as one of 50 finalists in this year’s Zart National Teacher-Artist Prize (NTAP), a national annual art prize for Australian educators.

It is the second time Mal has entered the prize, with his work Gumleaves - a detailed triptych in coloured pencil on paper of leaves he collected - capturing the judging panel’s attention this time around.

A visual communication design teacher at Galen Catholic College, Mal said the work connected nicely with what he was teaching at the time, asking students at the end of term to do some freehand drawing at home.

He said he encourages them to do some observational drawing on their break because it helps keep your creative skills fresh and your mind active.

“I did that same thing at the beginning of one of the term breaks last year, so I thought there was a connection between the work and my teaching practice,” he said.

“I’m also drawn to nature and subjects like leaves and plants, so at the end of a very busy term it was a chance to unwind and completely absorb myself in the fine details found in a couple of gum leaves.

“It’s a creative practice and it’s a meditative, restoring process as well.”

While Mal has been drawing as long as he can remember, he’s thrilled to have been selected as a finalist from the hundreds of entries the prize receives from across Australia.

He says he often tells his students they need to “throw their hat in the ring sometimes and just have a go”.

He is now in the running for the NTAP cash prize of $10,000, with the prize winner’s school also receiving art materials from Zart worth $10,000.

There is also a runner-up prize of $2500 in art materials, seven highly commended state-based prizes, and the People’s Choice prize of $2500 cash.

It comes at an exciting time for Mal, who recently completed illustrating his fifth children’s picture book, a follow up to an earlier publication called “The Box Boy”.

The publishers were impressed with the relatability of the story, centred on a boy who - stuck at home uses his creativity and imagination to entertain himself in amazing ways with boxes.

It is in the process of being finalised and is scheduled for release in stores August this year.

By LEAH TINDILL TOUGH doesn’t even begin to describe the level of endurance the Wangaratta Tough Mudder competitors have.

Training six days per week, Belinda Giggins said her group of 15 Wangaratta locals combined strength and fitness training in preparation for the 20 kilometre military style obstacle course at Phillip Island on March 31.

“We have been going out to Wangaratta Strength and Fitness to do strength training and running,” she said.

“For three days we do weights

The vouchers are also a great resource for local schools when they come across a family that may need a helping hand with uniform or school supplies.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide these vouchers to students across our region,” Executive Officer of Into Our Hands Community Foundation Sarah Thompson said.

The team has also incorporated local group the Wangaratta Carevan into their training by donating cash or items weekly.

All cleaned up Wangaratta District Specialist School AFTER discussions in class about “Clean Up Australia Day” students in Cobbler were inspired to pick up rubbish on and around our local bike tracks.

They completed a three kilometre walk and collectively filled a garbage bag full of rubbish.

River inspires students Galen Catholic College UNIT three visual communication design students spent some time drawing at Riverside Square in town recently.

With ideal weather, students completed a number of short observational drawing tasks as an introduction to environmental design.

JOIN in Harmony Day celebrations at King George Gardens n Friday, March 26 from noon until 4pm.

Musical matinee salute to the ANZACs

ONE Australia’s most prolific authors, Dr Anita Heiss will speak about her latest novel called Bila Yarrudhang-galang-dhuray (River of Dreams) during the Wangaratta Arts Council’s literary lunch event being held on Saturday.

It is believed to be the first Australian commercial fiction novel to feature the title in an Aboriginal language - of Wiradjuri country in Central New South Wales.

The novel has received high praise and has been nominated for many awards since its publication by Simon and Schuster in May last year.

The Literary Lunch will be held at the Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway on Saturday, March 26 at 11.30am for a 12pm start.

THE King Valley Balloon Fiesta, Victoria’s biggest hot air balloon event, will be held at the Wangaratta Turf Club on Saturday from 4pm until 8pm.

Food hub officially opened to King Valley community IT was more like a summer day when the community gathered for the autumn harvest celebration and the opening of the King Valley Food Hub at the Cheshunt Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Visitors browsed outdoor tables covered in produce from people’s gardens, sharing and collecting apples, zucchinis, tomatoes, peaches, freshly picked herbs and more, including the odd recipe.

At 2.30pm around 40 people in attendance - including local families and visitors to the valley - gathered at the entrance of the food hub to celebrate its official opening.

Suz Christison welcomed all those who came along, before WANGARATTA Sing Australia Group meets each Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9pm at Purbrick Hall, next to Holy Trinity Cathedral.

Sustainable King Valley’s Kate Gilson untied the ribbon with the help of Daniel Cocking from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.

The department contributed a grant of $5700 towards the project through its Climate Change Adaption Strategy grants program.

Brown Brothers’ Milawa Winery had a busy weekend due to caps linked to staff shortages as a result of the ongoing fallout from the pandemic.

is seeking staff including chefs, and in the areas of front of house, cellar door guest services and packaging.

COVID certainly continues to have an impact on staff absenteeism and the day-to-day functioning of workplaces.

One of the greater factors is the high price of rentals and the low availability

of housing options in the Wangaratta district, making it extra difficult for workers to move to the area for employment.

The hospitality industry has not been immune to the widespread staffing shortages as a result of the pandemic and Brown Brothers guest services manager Georgia Beavis expects the issue to continue

for the next 12-18 months.

Other hospitality venues in Wangaratta have closed on a Monday and Tuesday, or have reduced trading hours each day to allow them to cope with the ongoing staff shortages.

Industry in Wangaratta has been hit hard with Alpine Truss and Alpine MDF struggling to find workers, a human resource

commodity that is hindering the long running businesses’ ability to increase production levels to where they have the potential to be.

Wangaratta Engineering has been looking for a qualified fitter and turner for more than four months and owner Heath Lloyd has tried just about everything to find the right person.

Beechworth Secondary College had a median study score of 29, but it was its 40+ score that was a standout with 13.7pc reaching the A grade figure.

Benalla P-12 College had a median study score of 26, with zero over 40+, while FCJ College Benalla had a strong median of 30 with 6pc of scores 40+.

Euroa Secondary College’s dux achieved one of the highest scores in the region with a 98.55 ATAR.

Teens look to the future with uni

WANGARATTA High School year 12 graduates Kayla Fisher and Amy Henderson were among hundreds of local students, and tens of thousands around the state, who received their first round university offers yesterday.

The pair are both interested in humanitarian work and development, and were offered their first choice course at their chosen universities.

Kayla, 17, has been offered a

double degree in Arts and Public Policy with a major in third-world development at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“I was happy with my ATAR score even if I thought I could do better but it’s been a tough year,” Kayla said.

“It was difficult not having feedback from classmates because I didn’t know if I was doing okay or needed to improve.

“But, I got there in the end and am

looking forward to the next step.”

Amy, 18, will be doing occupational therapy at Deakin but hopes to branch into humanitarian work in third world countries.

“I had hoped for a higher ATAR but I didn’t need one, I’m pretty happy with how I went,” Amy said.

“Last year I really missed out on having the balance of sport and social aspects of school which really help me get through the study aspect.

“The offer I received was my first choice so I’m really happy with that.

“I’ll jump straight in this year I think because my initial plans to have a gap year and travel aren’t likely now.

“Eventually I want to go into allied health overseas and Kayla and I have always talked about collaborating; she’s more interested in the politics side and I’d do the health side so that could be cool.”

Musicians invited to orchestra meeting MUSICIANS interested in becoming part of a new regional orchestra being formed in Wangaratta will be meeting in the King George V Gardens on Sunday at 2.30pm.

A newly formed committee, involving local violinist Sally Ross, will be in attendance and the group welcomes other potential members to come along, particularly seeking violin and flute players, a percussionist and a conductor.

Aggregate season wraps up at WLTC

THE Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club (WLTC) has wrapped up their season with the final round of aggregate played on Saturday.

The last round decided the winners and place getters of the aggregate season.

A presentation was undertaken under the oak tree at day’s end with all trophies of the club champions and aggregate winners being presented: Overall winner: John Brunner 260 games, (average of 21.6 games/ week out of a possible 24 games).

2nd: Andrew Cope 238 games.

3rd: Frazer Judd 237 games.

Equal 4th: Beth Cope 231 games, (Beth also won the ladies aggregate), Terry Flynn 230 games.

5th: Pat Flynn 225 games.

In section one, John Brunner (21-19) just edged out Frazer Judd who wrapped up his final round

with a score of 20-18, just in front of Phil Peck on 20-19.

Mark Brown (18-19) and Kevin Callahan (17-21) rounded out the section.

In section two Barry Sullivan took the glass with a score of 24-14 to end his season in style, finishing a clear first ahead of Matt Curran (18-20) and Brian Scobie (18-20).

Frank Harris came in at fourth with a score of 16-22.

Section three also saw a glass earnt for Ken Parker (24-18), while Mike Lairson (21-21) and Maree Sullivan (20-22) rounded out the podium.

Alan Busk wasn’t far behind on 19-23.

Michael Falkenberg (24-13) was a clear winner in section four, with Phil Dryden (18-19) and Pat Flynn (17-20) toiling tirelessly.

Geoff Allen finished in fourth on 15-22.

Andrew Cope was in outstand-

ing form taking out section five on 24-12.

Jacob Reidy (19-20), Henry Dean (17-20) and Greg Renner (14-23) couldn’t take it up to Cope.

Section six’s Peter Curran (2412) was another player to win 24 games, with Terry Flynn (19-18) and Beth Cope (17-17) playing well.

Peter Ablazej (17-20) and John Shanley (13-23) completed the section.

In section seven Amy Lairson finished on 21-14 just ahead of Peter Lewis (19-18).

Geoff Davidson took home a bronze with a score of 18-16 and Max McAuliffe (16-20) and Sue Piper (16-22) battled hard all day.

Section eight was tight with Denise McCallum (22-18), Tim Dickinson (21-16) and Jenni O’Sullivan (21-16) all battling for the top spot.

Mick Keogh (18-20) and George Lee (12-24) came in at fourth and fifth respectively.

Smith’s Test century drought continues

By AAP NEWSWIRE USMAN Khawaja has said it’s funny that people are talking about Steve Smith’s Test century drought given the former skipper is still consistently producing big scores.

Smith cut a frustrated figure after being dismissed for 59 on day one of the third Test against Pakistan in Lahore.

The 32-year-old combined with Khawaja (91) for a crucial 138-run stand to help settle the ship after Australia had crashed to 2-8.

Smith’s most recent Test century came against India in January, 2021.

Since then he has batted 14 times in the Test arena and produced seven half-centuries, including scores of 93, 81, 78, and 72.

Smith’s latest half-century helped Australia reach 5-232 at stumps on day one, and Khawaja feels it’s just a matter of time before the star batsman reaches triple figures again.

“I’m sure he’s frustrated in some respects,” Khawaja said.

“He is, in my opinion, the greatest batsman I’ve seen in my era, averaging 60 pretty much his whole Test career.

“I’m still in awe in how many runs he’s scored over a long period of time.

“I find it so funny we’re talking about Steve Smith not scoring 100s, he seems to be getting 70, 80 ... and doing it very easily. That’s just the class Steve Smith has.

“I’m sure once he gets a big score, more big scores (will come). The fact he’s getting those 60s, 70s, he’s looking really good with the bat.”

Keeping your mind busy and being active is key to their success on and off the course.

They are thrilled that their passion for golf is rubbing off on the younger generation of golfers who will be the future of the sport and the Jubilee club alike.

When the men are not playing golf, they are actively working on the green as grounds maintenance otherwise they sneak in a beer among friends.

Ralph, Greg and Alan show no signs of slowing down as they look forward to the 2022 program and playing plenty more golf.

THERE is nothing more satisfying than a game of golf at the Jubilee Golf Club.

Just ask Ralph Nalder, 93, Greg Hogan, 90 and Alan Bell, 90 who have a combined total of 59 years on the golf course.

Golf is a passion for the three men and their personal experiences along the way have been rewarding in many ways.

“The greatest win I have had in my golfing career is the win of meeting and making new friends on the course,” Mr Bell said.

“In the 55 years as a golfer, I have made many friends along the way and love being a part of club that feels like family.”

Alan took up golf after retiring from football and cricket.

Busy month for local archers WANGARATTA Archers have had a busy few weeks, keeping them on their toes, and bringing the sport that they love to other people.

Archers started off with the festival in Bright, “Get a grip of the Grind”.

This is a festival held each year at the end of February for women to move out of their comfort zone with activities ranging from archery to bee keeping, to kayaking and everything in between.

There are seminars on a large variety of subjects.

Wangaratta Archers played host to two groups of 15 archers.

A great time was had by all, and was held in the magnificent grounds of Red Earth Lodge, on the way to Mt Buffalo.

Sunday, February 6 saw the club hold the Morgan Jayne Thompson Memorial Shield.

This shoot is held each year to remember a past club member that lost her battle with depression.

It is a time to reflect on how your friends are faring.

Quite often a kind word can turn the whole day around.

YOUNG SCOUTS: Wangaratta Archers hosted the Wangaratta Scouts.

The shoot was won by Brandon York.

The event was followed by a barbecue and the presentation of the shield.

On Thursday, February 17 the club hosted the Wangaratta Scout Group.

The club members had great fun bringing the sport to the next generation.

GABE Watson and Harry Allen from Wangaratta Amateur Swimming Club recently competed in the Victorian Open and Victorian Age State Swimming Championships at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

These state championship are qualifying events, and the two Wangaratta swimmers achieved great results competing against the top swimmers in the state at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Watson has competed at three major state events over the last five weeks, swimming in 10 finals, medalling in three events and achieving qualifying times for the Australian National Open Swimming Championships to be held in Adelaide in May. Allen improved his ranking at the state championships, swimming personal best times in multiple events and a top 10 finalist in the 50m butterfly.

COBRAM Roar got the better of Wangaratta City in the upset of the round in Albury Wodonga Football Association men’s competition.

After downing Albury United 2-1 in the match of the round last weekend, the Devils couldn’t replicate their form against the Roar, going down 3-2.

Wangaratta led early but the home side went in 2-1 up thanks to goals from Anthony Corso and Jack Dovey.

“They then got us on the break, scored in quick succession and we went into half-time 2-1 down and it’s always tough chasing at Cobram.”

After last weekend’s sensational win over United, Vasilevski believes his players may have been complacent.

“I felt like we were a bit too casual before the game,” he said.

“The warm up lacked intensity and because we’ve beaten the last few times we just thought it was going to happen.

“It’s probably not a bad thing for this to happen early in the season.”

Cobram have showed positive signs in the first two rounds after going down by just one goal (2-3)

to Myrtleford in round one.

“They’ve definitely improved,” Vasilevski said.

“They’ve got a few handy young players and some more experienced players as well so they’re definitely going to be hard to beat in Cobram.”

Josh Masters made his long awaited return, coming off the bench at half-time.

“Josh was really good when he came on after half-time,” Vasilevski said.

“He definitely made a difference, he got on the ball and controlled the game.

“Dan Kelly got in some good spots and ‘Burchy’ (Adam Burchell) was creating plenty of chances.”

Vasilevski now wants his side to move on with a tough clash against Albury United at home awaiting.

“We just need to move on now, we know that we need to do the little things better,” he said.

“We’ll work hard at training during the week and plan for Albury City on Thursday.”

Corowa Blue take out 2021/22 NERTA section one

THE NERTA season culminated in the grand finals played at the picturesque Merriwa Park complex at the Wangaratta Lawn Courts for the first time.

A big thankyou to the Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club for making their courts available at late notice after the Corowa courts were deemed not quite up to the standard required.

All teams had high hopes of success but unfortunately there can only be one winner on grand final day.

Section 1 The match between Corowa Blue (Claire Davidson, Rachael Crawford, Helen Fuge, Darreell Spencer, Jono Keys, Greg Filliponi) and Corowa Red (Marianne Spencer, Jo Brooks, Amanda Hemphill, Scott Francis, Peter Filliponi, Josh Quick) went the distance with the result still in the balance until the last set was completed.

Corowa Blue started favourites with a near perfect season behind them, their only blemish coming

in the rain affected first round of the season where Corowa Red took the points.

The match began with both sides trading sets, the Blue men were on top, while Red’s women were outstanding, the turning point in the match came when Blue’s Rachael and Helen managed to win the final women’s set and this then ensured that Blue would go into the mixed sets with a two set and a three game advantage.

Corowa Red’s Scott and Marianne turned the tables quickly with a decisive 8-3 victory to put themselves a game in front and give themselves a chance of forcing a super tie-break to decide the premiership but the Blue team showed why they have been the best team all year as they steadied and won the remaining two sets to record a comfortable victory in the end.

Blue’s Greg Filliponi was unstoppable with three sets, while Red’s Marianne Spencer recorded three sets for the runner ups.

Section 2 Wahgunyah Red (Mareeta Corcoran, Kylie Greig, Max Harvey, Travis McDonald, Jesse Johnstone, Ethan Palmer) have been the measuring stick for the rest of the competition for two years and deservedly started this final as raging favourites but Everton Blue (Jo Lucas, Julie Deretic, Melanie Hellebrand, Garry Bennett, Russell Bennett, Alan Wood) weren’t to be taken lightly as they have been peaking at the right end of the season.

The final score line is very deceiving as this match was much closer than the 7-2 victory suggests.

Everton opened brightly with an 8-1 women’s win, while Garry and Russell pushed Travis and Jesse to the limit with a number of deuce games and they were just unable to win the vital points that mattered.

The match was turned on its head when Wahgunyah won a women’s set courtesy of the consistency and brilliance of Max

Harvey, he was the difference between the two teams.

He then teamed with Kylie and lead from the front with an impressive performance that belied his tender years.

Wahgunyah’s confidence was growing and from here they never allowed Everton a chance to recover and ran out convincing winners.

Max Harvey was Wahgunyah’s best closely followed by Travis and Ethan, while Jo Lucas, Julie Deretic and Russell Bennett put respectability on the scoreboard for Everton.

Section 3 Wahgunyah Red ( Kane Palmer, Ollie Struve, Andrew Palmer, Brett Skinner) went into this final as the only undefeated team in the competition and were always going to be hard to beat but Wahgunyah Blue (Priscilla Hill, Matt Vogel, Corey Hill, Liam Hill) knew the task at hand would take a herculean effort and saw it as a challenge.

Blue began well but were una-

ble to secure the necessary points at the critical times to win games and although the first two sets were 8-6 and 8-1 losses, they were always in the contests.

Wahgunayh Red held all the aces on the day and controlled the match and never allowed Blue to settle and ran out comfortable winners.

Wahgunyah Red were the top team all year and were only getting better as the season drew to a close and deserved their victory.

Blue had an impressive season but found the last hurdle was too large and were gallant in defeat.

As a side note this was fourth time lucky for Wahgunyah Red’s captain Kane Palmer.

Hawks first and last hit out a success

WANGARATTA Rovers played their first and last practice match for the pre-season, posting a 14.14.(98) to 5.4.(34) win.

The Hawks had some clubs pull out of practice matches late, meaning Jake McQueen, Jack Ganley, Lukas Webb, Mackenzie Bristow and Todd Bryant will have just the one hit-out, prior to the competition’s first game against Myrtleford on April 2.

Ben Timms, Tom Boyd (Werribeelisted) and 2018 O&M Morris medallist Brodie Filo were unavailable for the hit out.

Wangaratta Rovers football operations manager Barry Sullivan said he was pleased with how the clash went.

“It was really good, Mooroopna were a strong opposition,” Sullivan said.

“The first quarter was a bit of an arm wrestle but the boys were full of energy and gradually our pressure got us on top.

“Sam Carpenter was sensational and Michael Clarke was really good too.”

The Hawks also got their first look at their new star recruits. “’Webby (Lukas Webb) and Todd Bryant were both really good,” Sullivan said.

“You can tell they’re both great footballers and I thought their communication throughout the match was great.

“The young boys like Jace McQuade, Elijah Amery, Regan Gorman and Sam Allen all had their moments too.”

Although Sullivan admits the late practice match cancellations have been frustrating, he still believes his side is in good nick ahead of round one.

“It’s been more frustrating trying to organise back-up games and grounds and things like that,” he said.

“We converted those lost practice matches into intra-clubs and match simulations so I don’t think our boys

of injuries and COVID behind him, while Michael Bordignon and Liam McVeigh played their first games.

“We were missing five or six but we still had a pretty strong side in,” Reid said.

“It was good to get three quarters into Liam McVeigh and he’s pulled up really well too.

“Daniel Sharrock has been training at Werribee throughout the pre-season and he got a whole game under his belt.

“It was good to bring them in for the cohesion of the group.”

Wangaratta now turn their heads to a blockbuster round one clash against Albury under lights at Norm Minns Oval.

“We’ve now got two weeks to prepare for Albury,” Reid said.

“We’re in good shape as I’m sure Albury are too so we’re looking forward to playing the best side in the competition.

“Round one will show us where we’re at.”

“They’re a quality side in the GV league so it was good to have a hit out like that early in the season.

“They were hard at the contest and slick around the middle which is a challenge we wanted to get into our mids.”

B3: Wangaratta bounced back from a heartbreaking one shot loss against Beechworth last week to storm into the grand final with an 11 shot win over Corowa Civic at Wodonga on Saturday.

Jack Dillon, Bruce Desmond, Chris Bell and Tiger Bussell were the big winners for Wangaratta, losing only three of the last 10 ends to win by nine (21-12).

Fred Herman, Ron McAuliffe, Malcolm Hargreaves and John Keen came from a two shot deficit at the halfway mark to score a solid three shot win (17-14), while Graeme Norman, Allan Wilson, Mick Lenane and Howard Beard dropped five shots in the last two ends to lose by just a shot (17-18).

GOTAFE O&M deal Institution announces five year netball naming rights sponsorship

OVENS and Murray Football Netball League received a massive boost yesterday with the announcement of a five year netball naming rights sponsorship deal with local education and training provider GOTAFE. Travis Heeney, GOTAFE chief executive officer, said he was excited to be partnering with the OMFNL because the sponsorship will enable GOTAFE to better support the region in accessing education, career and training services.

“GOTAFE want to be part of the journey to lifelong learning for young people in North East Victoria.

“Our partnership will help us facilitate great outcomes for our communities and industry.

“We are delighted to be the naming rights sponsor for the netball.

“It is so important to encourage an active lifestyle and for everyone, including women and girls, to enjoy being active without worrying about judgement, gender stereotypes or skill level.

“We are really looking forward to working with the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League to tell stories of football and netball players to inspire everyone to be more active

This new partnership will see GOTAFE’s logo prominently positioned on match day footballs and netballs and players and officials uniforms.

Additionally, the sponsorship gives GOTAFE naming rights to the netball cup which will be referred to as the GOTAFE Cup in A, B, C Grade and Under 17.

OMFNL general manager, Craig Millar, said he was excited about the deal describing it as a great signing.

“After a few challenging seasons, we are looking forward to the 2022 season, when we will be welcoming GOTAFE to our growing team of sponsors,” Mr Millar said.

“We are very pleased to partner with GOTAFE, as this sponsorship will allow OMFNL to better support our teams, players and members in their professional and personal journeys.
