WANGARATTA businesses operators will be given greater course access to upskill in the digital world after the region was identified as being well behind metropolitan areas in terms of digital skills knowledge. The need for higher knowledge came from an Australian Digital Inclusion Index (ADII) which identified the region had a “very low” rate of digital inclusion. To get a better picture about how to raise the region’s digital IQ, an education curator called Startup Shakeup applied for money through the State Government’s $3.5 million Regional Digital Fund. The fund aims to support a broad range of important smallscale digital projects across Victoria, to increase digital capability, connectivity and infrastructure. Startup Shakeup surveyed 13,000 Ovens and Murray businesses to work out how commercial operators could be assisted the best with digital tools and skills. Startup Shakeup applied to the State Government’s Regional Digital Fund for money to improve digital inclusion especially in relation to the business sector. “We have just collected data from a survey across the region looking into the type of business, industry, exactly which LGA they’re in and what they would like to improve on,” Ms Young said. “We’re focusing on small to medium sized enterprises and in the North East we’ve got 13,000 small businesses and about 8400 employ nobody and around 4000 employ between 1-19 people. ■ Continued page 2
