By JEFF ZEUSCHNER WANGARATTA’S aspirations to hold further major swimming events have only been strengthened by the successful staging of the weekend’s Victorian Country Long Course Championships. Ahead of today’s final day of competition, Swimming Victoria president Hayden Collins said the three day event, attracting 700 of the best swimmers from country Victoria, had been an outstanding success. “The investment into swimming is clearly evident at this amazing facility and Wangaratta certainly has one of the best pools in Victoria,” he enthused yesterday, enjoying perfect weather poolside at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre’s 50 metre outdoor pool. “The Ovens and Murray Swimming Association organising committee, with Rural City of Wangaratta council and centre management have done an amazing job with the championships. “We’ve seen a lot of fast times, personal bests (PBs) and country records set, and I haven’t heard one bad word spoken...it’s been fantastic.” Mr Collins said the country’s best swimmers will return to Wangaratta for the Victorian Country Short Course Championships in August. “While we like to share hosting rights around, there certainly is potential for us to come back here in the near future,” he said. ■ More coverage pages 10 and 16.

A MOUNTAIN bik bike track t k off Wilson Road at Wangandary is on Wangaratta Cycling Club’s wish list, an idea proponents believe will create an actively used facility for local families, allow up and coming MTB riders to train, and incentivise tourists to visit the area.

The club is proposing to council that a mountain bike park be developed in a plot of land that the
Scouts S t currently tl use. Club committee member Rob Sullivan said they can see the prospect of shared usage of the site by the Scouts and others who would like to use the tracks. “The Scouts, club members and the public would benefit and we see it as
being drawcard b i a tourism t i d d as well where they could ride out to the track as they’re travelling around the area,” he said. “The plan involves a cross country circuit of four to five kilometres and there’s a flow trail (a gravity trail with jumps), and a pump track of-
ffering i families f ili a place l tto ride id and work on fitness or skills.” Wangaratta MTB star Riley Corke represented Australia at World Championships last year and raced in Europe, offering a glimpse of what can be achieved at a higher level. Mr Sullivan believes with
more ffacilities like thi this att iliti lik our doorstep it opens the door for others to get into the sport. Beechworth and Bright have established mountain biking trails, something Mr Sullivan said attracts thousands of bike users every year. ■ Continued page 2
