Locals workingg to secure Wangaratta g Festival of Jazz and Blues future

TWO well-attended recent meetings have put the continuation of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues on the agenda for 2024. Another gathering is planned for early January, when it’s hoped further community support will be forthcoming to ensure the festival continues beyond this year’s event, held in November, which was billed as its ‘Last Hurrah’.

nationally-recognised event. Positive feedback from spectators and performers encouraged a group of like-minded community members to hold a meeting to gauge support for the festival’s future. Despite not being publicly advertised, the first meeting attracted more than 25 people, including some past and current Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues

committee members, venue operators, performers, business operators and community members - all with a strong desire to ensure the festival remains on the city’s events calendar. As a result of this meeting, immediate action commenced, and a followup meeting was held. Local performer and festival enthusiast Andrew Nunn has chaired the first two meetings, and said

leading into the 2023 event there were conversations within the community, which continued with visitors for November’s ‘Last Hurrah’, about this “surely not being the last festival”. The first discussion aimed to see whether the concept ‘had legs’, with Cameron Abberfield from Norton Street’s The Railyard Wangaratta offering a meeting venue. ■ Continued page 4
