wasn’t enough time to try and test an emergency management plan for the event under regulations that came into effect following the Black Summer bushfires of 2019-20. Mr Skermer says he has attempted to follow all necessary protocols, but he feels “blindsided” by au-

thorities that he said failed to alert him to the changed regulations. The cancellation of the event has sparked widespread criticism from longtime event patrons with council in receipt of more than 280 emails calling for the event to go ahead as planned on December 1.

Mr Skermer sought legal advice on Tuesday afternoon in the hope of finding an avenue where the event could be held, but he confirmed “we will not run an illegal event”. Rural City of Wangaratta councillors met on Monday to discuss the issue to see if there was a way forward for

the event to take place this year, however Mayor Dean Rees said the decision falls out of their authority. Cr Rees, who is supportive of the event taking place, confirmed that as the CFA and Victoria Police have not given approval, it will not take place in 2024. ■ Continued page 2
