COUNCIL has ruled out the Folk, Rhythm and Life festival from taking place this year based on the advice from the CFA, which has rejected the event’s staging due to an inadequate emergency management plan.

Mr Skermer says he has attempted to follow all necessary protocols, but he feels “blindsided” by au-

thorities that he said failed to alert him to the changed regulations.

The cancellation of the event has sparked widespread criticism from longtime event patrons with council in receipt of more than 280 emails calling for the event to go ahead as planned on December 1.

Mr Skermer sought legal advice on Tuesday afternoon in the hope of finding an avenue where the event could be held, but he confirmed “we will not run an illegal event”.

Rural City of Wangaratta councillors met on Monday to discuss the issue to see if there was a way forward for

the event to take place this year, however Mayor Dean Rees said the decision falls out of their authority.

Cr Rees, who is supportive of the event taking place, confirmed that as the CFA and Victoria Police have not given approval, it will not take place in 2024.

“There is no possibility for it to be held this year - council cannot override the decision because the CFA are a determining authority, and they have said they’re not prepared to work in the time parameters,” he said.

“This all started a few weeks ago, there were some issues and the Skermers were certainly prepared to work and so were we (to allow the event to take place), but because the CFA and police said there wasn’t enough time…they said council had to decline and

say they couldn’t proceed.

“We were prepared to work with them, I went out to the property and met with the Skermers and (we) tried our best.

“I personally think we could have done a lot more to help these people with it and we’re hoping this is just a postponement and we can all work together to have it sometime in the New Year.”

The Eldorado property where the event has been held since 1996, but was last held there in 2018, lies in a bushfire overlay area and Cr

Rees can’t see why it couldn’t be staged there in the future.

“Police suggested that the event be staged at the recreation reserve but they would have to build a lot more infrastructure to handle this event which has been staged at this venue successfully in the past without issue,” Cr Rees said.

“The Skermers are smart people and they’re not going to let the event go if there’s a (nearby) fire, 30-plus degree heat and a huge northerly wind blowing - they know themselves the event would be cancelled.

“They’ve done everything within the realms of possibility to make it happen but we didn’t have the authorities spending a couple of days working hard with the Skermers to get it done, they just said there’s not enough time to procure this event.”

Event organisers were willing to reduce the capacity of the event this year instead of the usual 4000 limit, however, Cr Rees said authorities were still not willing to compromise.

CFA and Victoria Police have been contacted for comment.

IT was all hands on deck last Friday when the Gentle Annie Caravan Park and Camping Reserve took delivery of a brand new amenity block, delivered on the back of an oversized truck before being carefully craned into place.

The new facility which sits above the flood line is fitted with five showers and five toilets for women, plus an allgender disability access toilet and shower/family bathroom including baby change table.

It was made possible with the help of a $200,000 grant from the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) Camping and Caravan Grants project, secured back in 2021 by reserve leaseholder and park manager Petra Seebacher, supported by the park’s committee of management.

Committee of management treasurer Steve Bowman said it had been a challenging process and a long time coming, but the committee was pleased to see the project now moving forward.

He said considerable site preparation had been required, with the amenities block

LOCAL PSYCHOLOGIST BACKS PROJECT 365 INITIATIVE

Working together to raise awareness

IN his role as a psychologist, Neil Barassi says he sees many of the negative impacts of mental illness.

However, he’s been thrilled to see the progress being made in the community through Project 365, which will hold its next event this weekend with a concert at the Wangaratta Rodeo Grounds.

“I have been a part of many educational and pro-active activities to promote positive mental health, but in my 25 years of working in the field, none has given me as much pleasure and admiration to be a part of as Project 365,” Neil said.

“It has been a privilege of mine to work alongside such enthusiastic and dedicated people of the community.

Neil said the November 25 event, ‘The Ripple Effect’, would showcase Project 365’s U Can Cry

band at its best, and raise further awareness within the community of the positive side to mental health.

“Mental health issues are nothing to be afraid of, and this concert is all about opening the conversations and de-stigmatising mental illnesses,” Neil said.

“Australian Bureau of Statistics website statistics indicate a rising trend in the most common mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety and substance abuse.

“On average, nine people per day commit suicide in Australia, and although U Can Cry is a small band, they sing it loud and proud that together we can do something about these statistics.

“This concert is about getting the community to buy into the conversation, and generating support to offer hope to those who may be feeling hopeless and helpless.

A MAN is in custody and police are calling for witnesses to his alleged offending, following reports of erratic driving in the Wangaratta area on Monday morning.

Police responded to calls for assistance at Edwards Street around 9.15am, after a silver Honda Civic sedan was observed driving in an erratic and dangerous manner.

According to Detective Sergeant Simon Hunter, the vehicle was subsequently observed by police driving erratically in the vicinity of Parfitt Road, and the driver was arrested on the spot.

“He has since been charged with a number offences including conduct endangering serious injury and driving in a manner dangerous,” Det Sgt Hunter said.

He said police were appealing for any witnesses who might have observed the Civic being driven erratically on Monday morning.

Anyone with information or footage of the incident is urged to contact Detective Senior Constable Paul Hore or Det Sgt Hunter at Wangaratta Police Station on 5723 0888.

Solar farm fire sees strong response

By RYAN MALCOLM A SERIES of small grass and scrub fires which broke out at Winton Solar Farm on Monday afternoon saw a significant firefighting response by local volunteer brigades.

Emergency crews were first alerted to the blaze at Winton-Glenrowan Road around 12.20pm, with five CFA units from Benalla and Winton brigades in attendance.

A CFA spokesperson said crews worked for over an hour to bring the “small fires” under control, with the incident deemed safe as of 1.32pm.

The spokesperson did not confirm the cause of the fires.

By ANITA McPHERSON ONE of the biggest crowds in years made their way to the King Valley on the weekend for the La Dolce Vita festival, soaking up the sunshine and sampling the region’s best food and wine.

Event manager Elizabeth Ellis said most of the 11 participating wineries reported an increase in visitor numbers on both days, but with a substantial increase in the sale of festival glasses on Saturday alone.

“Saturday is usually the quieter day but this year it was phenomenal – but everyone coped brilliantly with it and they are ecstatic about how it went,” she said.

“On Sunday it was busy but with a steady flow of people coming and going, so it was easy to manage.

“There were almost 3000 glasses sold and we estimate attendance was up by 13 per cent, which is the best we’ve had in recent years.”

Ms Ellis said while the event predominantly draws visitors from Melbourne, this year there also appeared to be an increase in the number

of people attending from Sydney, Canberra and Albury Wodonga.

She said the addition of Symphonia Wines to the annual event had drawn more visitors out to the Myrrheebased wineries, and some venues reported having a number of visitors returning on the second day.

“There was a really good vibe and it was so picturesque – it was a really fantastic event,” Ms Ellis said.

While a late thunderstorm and even some hail passed through the upper end of the valley briefly late on Saturday, drizzle settled in over Milawa for a few hours forcing Brown Brothers to cancel its twilight blues music and movie event.

But Brown Brothers brand manager Katherine Brown said despite the setback and a somewhat quieter year than normal, the visitors who did make their way to Milawa enjoyed “a fantastic atmosphere”.

In a recent report to its annual general meeting, Loaves and Fishes - Christians Caring revealed that it was currently distributing more than 10 tonnes of food items each month to individuals and families

requiring assistance.

Chair Mark Heaton said while the higher cost of living had placed a financial burden on many people, some families were finding it more difficult than others to deal with extra pressure on family budgets.

“The ability of LFCC to offer emergency aid is dependent on several food sources,” he said.

“However, donations from the local community are a major contributor that enables us to continue this vital service, distributing food relief to people within our community who are experiencing hardship.

“During the 2022-’23 financial year, we saw an in-

crease of 32 per cent in calls for emergency food aid, and the first quarter of this financial year indicates this trend is showing no signs of stopping.

“All donations, no matter how small, are gratefully accepted.

“As the need continues, together let’s make a difference.”

Federal MP welcomes national road funding g increases but says... y

We must get fair share for our dangerous roads INDEPENDENT federal MP for Indi Helen Haines has welcomed additional funding being directed to local road maintenance following the Australian Government’s announced increases to two key local roads investment programs.

Funding for the Roads to Recovery program will rise gradually from $500 million to $1 billion per year, while the Black Spot program funding will increase from $110 million to $150 million per year.

Dr Haines said she wanted to see the funding “hit the ground” as soon as possible.

“Regional and rural roads across the North East have been battered by severe weather events resulting in dangerous potholes and lane closures,” she said.

“These roads are disintegrating before our eyes and need to be prioritised.

“Regional and rural communities spend most of their time on local roads, and we deserve to feel safe using these roads to get to and from home, work and school.”

In Question Time last week, Dr Haines called on the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King to explain how the government was going to improve the ‘dire’ state of regional and rural roads.

“I wanted to know what the government was going to do to

The increases in funding, announced on Sunday, will be phased in over four years with the government committing to working with local council stakeholders in the lead-up to the Federal Budget in May 2024.

“The Minister says funding will be provided to local councils for road maintenance based on popu-

lation, road distance and how damaged the roads are,” Dr Haines said.

“We know that regional and rural councils are responsible for extensive road networks yet have smaller ratepayer bases than big cities from which to raise revenue.

“I will be working to ensure our local councils get a fair and adequate share of this road funding, and that they’re not given short shrift in favour of larger, wealthier city councils.”

Parliament broadens police pursuit powers NEW legislation introduced to the Victorian Parliament last week will allow police to target dangerous drivers earlier and implement stronger safety controls on recreational firearms.

The Justice Legislation Amendment (Police and Other Matters) Bill, introduced by Police Minister Anthony Carbines, includes reforms aimed at increasing the capacity of police to pre-emptively respond to unsafe driving behaviour, as well as limit the use of large capacity detachable magazines in concert with bolt-action shotguns during hunting, sport or target shooting activities.

The bill will outline new circumstances where police can deploy vehicle immobilising devices (VIDs) such as road spikes and stop sticks to prevent and stop dangerous drivers early in a pursuit.

Police can only deploy a VID when they are attempting to stop a driver escaping custody, avoiding arrest and stopping a moving vehicle in limited circumstances, however, the new legislation will allow them to deploy VIDs when they have a reasonable suspicion a vehicle is a risk to the safety of the driver, passenger, police or another person.

Under the bill, a special condition will also be placed on category A or A&B long-arm firearm licences for hunting, sport or target shooting, preventing bolt-action shotguns from being paired with large capacity detachable magazines.

Unlicensed people will be able to surrender their firearms to licensed firearms dealers without fear of arrest or prosecution, under the National Firearms Amnesty.

‘The Ripple Effect’ promises to be a celebration of community, where an anticipated 3000-4000 people can enjoy an afternoon and evening of fantastic local music, with a country market, food trucks and kids’ entertainment set to be a buzz at the Wangaratta Rodeo Grounds.

Coming off their debut success last year, the event’s founder Pete Rourke and marquee band U Can Cry are aiming for an even bigger display this year to continue their fight in de-stigmitising mental health.

To go with the mental health messaging which is becoming a growing cause in the community, the importance of being able to relate those problems to unique perspectives from people in the community who have endured struggles is a unique drawcard to this event.

Whether you are someone who is struggling through mental health or not, it’s important to go along and listen to the event’s messaging and buy-in to the conversations which may offer hope to those who are going through a rough patch.

Mr Rourke and its members of the U Can Cry band deserve plenty of recognition for what they’ve been able to form over just three years of existence, and it’s only just beginning.

As the community continues to search for its next marquee event in the current absence of a Jazz and Blues Festival next year, it’s important the community rallies behind initiatives like these.

And almost best of all, ticket proceeds will go back into the community.

Police presence will not make FRL safer I WISH to write in support of the Folk, Rhythm & Life Festival at Bilyana, Eldorado.

Back in 1997, as a new resident of Eldorado, I packed a few things along with my then two-year-old daughter onto a push bike and rode to the festival site.

From the minute we arrived I was knocked over by the goodwill of the FRL atmosphere.

I recall that there was no visible security at FRL. The goodwill at this event made it selfgoverning.

I later learnt that in those early days, one or two security personnel were on site in plain clothes.

The site in the early days had shade issues.

A water truck sprayed attendees to cool them down.

A year or two later they had solved their shade issue by running workshops to sew eyelets into donated canvas from Brucks.

You’ve ‘gotta’ love the volunteer spirit.

FRL has evolved over the years.

The values remain central - family, community, environment, humanity.

With all due respect to some of the agencies and council staff required to have input to this event, having a high police presence will not make FRL safer.

It will actually undermine the self-governing care and goodwill.

FRL is a shining example of the spirit and capacity of small communities.

They have absorbed massive hikes in Public Liability Insurance, compliance with a host of state agencies, bushfires, floods, Covid to host a series of outstanding safe, family friendly events that are so unique in this era.

Emphasising the festival’s positive impact on families, I’ve comfortably brought my child since a young age, and now at 12, he is excited about attending again.

Last year’s cancellation due to floods was disappointing, but we’re looking forward to this year’s event.

FRL’s unique features, including the Skermer’s family vibe, Hamish’s composting loos, and locally made FRL Steins, contribute to its distinctiveness.

The absence of noticeable drug use has always been appreciated, fostering a sense of community, centred around music and nature.

I express reservations about increased security or police presence, as it may impact FRL’s relaxed atmosphere.

My family eagerly anticipates attending this year, and the prospect of another cancellation (Wangaratta Chronicle, Nov 17) would be disheartening.

I thank the council for past support, recognising FRL’s contribution to the local community by attracting visitors and generating revenue.

WANGARATTA’S Landcare and Sustainability (WLS) initiative has been buoyed by an outpouring of community support following a fire which destroyed an estimated $12,000 worth of equipment at its Mullinmur Billabong base last month.

A storage container and equipment including mowers, whipper snippers, rakes, shovels and hand tools, as well as more heavy-duty equipment such as a firefighting pump and backpack spraying units were lost in the blaze, which occurred around 7pm on October 15.

The fire was investigated as suspicious, and an 11-year-old boy was rescued from the container by a passer-by and treated by paramedics.

WLS president Tony Lane said community groups and locals had quickly jumped to the aid of the program, which maintains the billabong space and operates an education hub for local school groups at the northern end of Phillipson Street.

He said UGL project manager Matt Routledge had pledged to donate a shipping container upon the company’s completion of the Glenrowan Solar Farm project in the coming weeks in order to replace the damaged storage shed, while the Wangaratta Men’s Shed is working to restore or recover some of the damaged tools.

A number of financial donations, including funds raised by Yarrunga Primary School through a casual clothes day, as well as shovels, rakes, and a second-hand chainsaw gifted to the group by local residents, have also showcased the community’s generosity. “(UGL) tries to do that – not just fly in and fly out and make the big bucks, but if there’s anything they can leave behind in a community sense, they’re happy to try and find those opportunities,” Mr Lane said.

Yarrunga students aid fire recovery with $500 donation

By SIMONE KERWIN YARRUNGA Primary School students have rallied to support the Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability community, donating $500 towards recovery from a recent fire at the group’s Mullinmur Billabong storage shed, which destroyed thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment.

The school’s 150 students raised the funds through a recent casual clothes day, with youngsters keen to assist a program they utilise as part of their outdoor education program.

“We visit the billabong a bit on our excursions and use some of the

facilities and equipment, and have built up a connection with Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability,” Yarrunga Primary outdoor education teacher Matt Lorback said.

“When we heard the news about the fire, the kids were pretty shocked, and we thought we could do something to help.”

Mr Lorback said students were asked to contribute a gold coin donation to the cause on the casual clothes day, when they were also able to enjoy marshmallows toasted around the school’s fire circle.

“We had some kids bring in $10 notes from their own savings, which

is a lot of money at that age - it just shows how much they value the facility,” he said.

“I’m really proud of how the kids in our community got together to show support - it makes you really proud of the community we’re building here.”

Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability vice-president Tony Lane thanked the students for their help.

“We are most grateful for this support from young people in our community who recognise the importance of supporting our natural environment and sustainable living,” he said.

“WLS is also following up other funding avenues for other essential equipment lost in the fire such as mowers, slash-

ers and a pump,” he said.

“We’re hopeful of being successful with a funding grant for this essential equipment and the show of community support for our work will certainly strengthen our funding application.”

Trail takes a turn towards Gentle Annie DESIGN changes have been made to the shared walk/cycle path being built from Dal Zotto Wines to Gentle Annie Lane in Whitfield, as part of the King Valley Prosecco Road Revitalisation Project.

Residents have been notified by the Rural City of Wangaratta the proposed path will be moved from the western side to the eastern side of the Wangaratta-Whitfield Road (or to the Gentle Annie Lane side of the road) following feedback received from the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) Hume region, which is the road management authority for Wangaratta-Whitfield Road.

Council says its officers “are working diligently to finalise the design”, aiming for plan approval from the DTP to allow construction of this section of the shared path to commence in early February, subject to weather conditions.

Works have progressed significantly at the site of the Whitfield Adventure Playspace and Visitor Hub, which is nearing completion, with most of the infrastructure now in place.

Council received $4M in funding from the Victorian Government, as part of the King Valley Prosecco Road Revitalisation Project, which also includes township enhancements at Whitfield and Cheshunt.

Morning tea a boost for breast care services A RECENT morning tea fundraiser hosted by Northeast Health Wangaratta’s breast care nurses raised $350 for local breast care services.

The funds raised included a donation from Café The PreVue, where the event was held again this year.

Despite the weather being a little off-putting on the day, the service is grateful to those who came along to offer support and help raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The annual pink morning tea ensures information is available for those seeking advice about breast cancer screening services locally, and about the importance of early breast cancer detection.

All funds raised on the day through donations will go to the NHW Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Service.

Rotary rewards Simon for years of dedicated service AMBULANCE Victoria fleet maintenance supervisor Simon Pilkington of Wangaratta has been recognised as Rotary’s Emergency Service Worker of the Year for his work managing teams in the Hume and Loddon Mallee regions.

Celebrated by the Rotary Club of Appin Park Wangaratta last month, Mr Pilkington was recognised for his 21 years of dedication to the local region, while managing more than 260 operational vehicles and his team of fleet maintenance officers across regional Victoria.

Within the role, Mr Pilkington ensures all fleet demands are met, even during times of significant workload and emergency events such as Black Saturday and the 2019/20 fires.

“It was totally unexpected and a big surprise,” Mr Pilkington said.

“It was really nice to be recognised like that by my peers after all the years of hard work and putting in the physical hours as well as the mental hours.

“It’s not just about myself either, I look after workshops in Shepparton, Bendigo and Wangaratta and

the people I’ve got working with me are just fantastic.

“I can lean on them to help out and there’s a lot of mutual respect – for me, this was about recognising the team too and I thank Rotary for this award.”

AV Hume acting regional director Steve Doyle said Mr Pilkington was “a vital link” in ensuring service delivery in both regions.

“Simon has risen to the challenge during natural disasters including fire and flooding events that have occurred during his time with AV, and his expertise has been an invaluable link

in the implementation of specialist resources,” he said.

“This is a significant task as the maintenance, management and support required to keep 260 operational response vehicles on the road is extremely challenging under normal conditions, let alone during significant workload and emergency events.

“I thank Simon for his contribution to our organisation and for sharing his knowledge and passion for delivering ambulance services to the wider Victorian community.”

Concern over access to public toilets at station

MEMBERS of Wangaratta Rail Action Group (WRAG) are concerned the new Wangaratta Station underpass could quickly become a walkway of ruin, due to the decision to not construct new toilets on the west side of the station as part of the ongoing Inland Rail works.

The construction of the new underpass is well over 50 per cent complete, but WRAG members have highlighted what they believe is a flaw in the design plans.

The current station toilets are located in the foyer on the east side of the station, which are closed after 6:30pm each day and every second Saturday dependent on staffing of the foyer.

The group fears there will be no convenient place to go to the toilets for passengers hopping off the station if the foyer is closed, leaving the subway as the likely option.

WRAG member David Maroney said the exclusion of toilets from the underpass construction design didn’t make sense.

“The nearest public toilet when the station is closed would be Woolworths or the library,” he said.

“Volunteers have recently had human excrement we’ve had to clean up just under the trees north of the station in the grassed area.

“There’s fears and concerns people will use the subway as the toilet and I don’t know who’s going to clean it up...we’ve spoken about it

and we won’t be cleaning the subway, it’s not our responsibility.”

Mr Maroney relayed his concerns to federal Indi MP Helen Haines, who enquired with ARTC Victoria and South Australia general manager, Ed Walker, on Mr Maroney’s behalf.

In a letter sent to Dr Haines in regards to Mr Maroney’s query, Mr Walker confirmed there would be no toilets built on the west side of the station as part of the construction of the underpass.

“During the precinct design stage, amenities on the western side of the railway tracks weren’t deemed necessary by V/Line, VicTrack, Department of Transport and Planning and Rural City of Wangaratta,” he said.

“Toilets remain accessible for passengers and public use at the Wangaratta Train Station.”

An ARTC spokesperson said ARTC sought community feedback on the Wangaratta railway precinct design in early 2022 and there was only one community response noting toilets.

They said in line with V/Line station design standards for similarly sized stations, toilet facilities are only provided on the same side as the waiting room and ticketing office to ensure safety and security for both customers and V/Line station staff.

continue to be located on the same side of the station precinct as the waiting room and ticketing office,” they said.

Cheers to 25 years of our stationeers THE Wangaratta Stationeers will this month celebrate 25 years of voluntary service to the Wangaratta Railway Station and the surrounding community.

The group has been the driving force behind the revitalisation and community engagement at Wangaratta Station, from scrubbing platforms to spearheading transformative projects.

In the midst of this remarkable journey stands the founding member of Wangaratta Stationeers, David Moroney.

At the vibrant age of 82, his journey reflects the essence of community, resilience, and the sheer joy derived from selflessly giving back.

David said with the station being one of the major stopping points in Wangaratta, he wanted to keep it clean and welcoming for visitors.

“I enjoy interactions with travellers and locals who do appreciate our work,” he said.

“It shows us that people do appreciate what we do at the railway station, especially here at Wangaratta.

“I take pride in seeing it clean and functional.”

David said there have been many highlights of being with the Wangaratta Stationeers over the years.

“In 2000, we did a mural involving most of the community and the schools in the Rural City of Wangaratta,” he said.

“There were 18 panels and we asked all the schools involved to do a panel each and the theme was either rail, Olympics or the regional area.

“The other highlight was winning the rural pride award in 1999, as well as the Tidy Towns awards in 2000, 2001 and 2003.”

Peter Garrett and The Alter Egos coming to Wangaratta MIDNIGHT Oil frontman Peter Garrett and his band The Alter Egos, featuring Midnight Oil’s Martin Rotsey, will play in Wangaratta next week as part of a limited series of live performances.

The event being held at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre on Wednesday, November 29, is part of ALWAYS LIVE, a statewide celebration of contemporary live music supported by the Victorian Government through Visit Victoria.

Ballroom Blitz in Wangaratta

THE Rural City of Wangaratta will host a big night of New Year’s Eve festivities at the Wangaratta Showgrounds on Sunday, December 31 from 5.30pm, with free entry for all.

The celebration will kick off with a warm welcome from local legends Scott & Amanda, plus Beechworth’s Asha Bright, who will enchant the audience with her original pieces.

They will be followed on stage by That Gold Street Sound, bringing their sensational soul tunes to the stage, before headline act Chocolate Starfish rounds out the night.

There will be fireworks at 9pm and again at midnight, plus activities to keep the whole family entertained including inflatables, laser tag, rock climbing, face painting, hair braiding and more.

Moyhu Action Group meeting in December THE annual general meeting of the Moyhu Action Group will be held on Monday, December 4 at 7pm in the Moyhu Soldiers Memorial hall.

Interested members of the community are invited to attend (the annual meeting will be followed by a committee meeting) and with a proposal before council to re-zone more land to allow for further residential growth, residents are encouraged to join discussions on how their town will grow.

A POPULAR game where participants battle it out on the golf course over nine holes for the opportunity to take home a ready-to-roast chook, has returned to the Whitfield Golf Club.

The Ivan Fulton Chook Run is the club’s mid-week gathering, held every Wednesday at 4.30pm during the summer season, and everyone is welcome.

This year’s scheduled start date of October 4 - coinciding with the arrival of Daylight Saving - unfortunately had to be postponed after drenching rain delayed course preparations and clubhouse restoration works, including extensive flood mitigation and its sun-safe project.

The club received a grant from the Rural City of Wangaratta’s community grants program last year, receiving funds towards the creation of a shaded entertaining area and outdoor kitchen.

President Greg Rosser said extensive drainage works have also been undertaken which are expected to help after heavy rain, making the course dry and playable for longer.

He said all they need now is more community members and visitors to come and play.

Local players named in Country Cup sides

A TOTAL of four Wangaratta and District Cricket Association players have been listed in North East Knights squads for the inaugural Country Cup tournament.

Rovers United Bruck juniors Reid McNamara and Will Graham, along with Yarrawonga Mulwala’s Jobe Fraser were named in the Knights’ under 16 boys squad, while Beechworth Wanderers’ Marianne Edwards made the under 15 girls team.

Under 16 boys coach Stewart Pearce said the talented squad was hard at work preparing for the tournament.

“I reckon we have got a strong side this year - last year we had a number of bottom age boys but they’re all matured now so we’ve got a pretty strong side,” he said.

“We’ve done a bit of training, we had a session the Sunday before last, and we had a practice match at Benalla Gardens against a Greenvale side from Melbourne.

“We had a good win, we posted a big total, and it was good to see a few of the boys get some runs.

“We’re looking in reasonable form at the moment.”

The Country Cup tournament is a slightly tweaked version of the Cricket Victoria pathways roadmap, which will lead country players to the Victorian Premier Cricket competitions of the Dowling

“They’ve split the state into two conferences, West and East – the North East Knights play against Northern Rivers and Gippsland in a number of 50 over and T20 games,” Pearce said.

“They do the same with the western side of the state, and the

top teams play off in a final.

“There’s no real crossover with the metro - the players come from the country and it leads into playing with a premier club in the Dowling (and Jennings) competition in January.”

Pearce said the local lads will be sure to star when the competition commences on Monday, Decem-

ber 11 against Gippsland Pride.

“We’ve got some really good talent around this area at the moment,” he said.

“Jobe will open the batting for us, he’s in the under 17 Victorian Country side at the moment which takes place in January, he’s done exceptionally well.

“Reid’s a bottom-ager but he’s

an up-and-comer, he’s a good little batter, so we’re expecting a few things from him and he can go again next year as well.

“Will’s a big, tall, strong fast bowler, so we’re hoping for some good things from all of them.”

Marianne Edwards and the under 15 girls Knights take on the Pride the following Monday on December 18.

WANGARATTA’S Michael Gambold will fight at this week’s Australian Amateur Boxing League Titles taking place at the Hobart Netball and Sports Centre.

Gambold will take his place in the light middleweight class, fighting at 71kg as he looks to add another title to an impressive amateur career.

Kicking off on Thursday, the titles will run over three days with more than 200 athletes set to compete in the hopes of claiming gold.

Gambold said he’s looking forward to testing himself.

“The body’s feeling good,” Gambold said.

“My preparation’s been awesome, I haven’t had any injuries and I’ve probably done the most sparring I’ve ever done.

“I sparred for four days in a row to try and replicate the tournament which has been good fun.”

Gambold will fight a different opponent every day and while he’s had a heap of amateur fights, he’s moving up in weight which is relatively unknown ground.

“I usually fight at 67kgs which is a weight I can make for one day but I can’t do that for three days, it makes me feel too sick,” he said.

The 28-year-old won bronze at last year’s Australian Amateur Boxing League Titles while he was fighting food poisoning and is desperate to go two better before hoping to turn professional next year.

“Last year I got bronze at the tournament but then I beat the guy who won it later on so I claimed the title that way,” he said.

“But every year it resets so hopefully I can win this weekend.

“I was planning to turn pro in December but because of this tournament hopefully that’ll happen around January, February next year.

“Winning this would look great on the resume when I do turn pro and would end my amateur career on a high.”

Gambold thanked North East Core Supports for helping him get over to Tasmania for the titles, along with Ferrello Developments.

Rangers lose another close one

WANGARATTA Rangers’ women have had another agonising narrow defeat, which has created a log jam in the middle of the table for Softball Albury Wodonga after six rounds, with five teams tied for fourth ladder.

Round six saw the Rangers take on the Grizzly Bears to try and separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

After a strong defensive start to the game by both

teams, Rangers pitcher Jess White provided a great performance throughout the game, battling hard for the entire match.

Bears broke the game open in the fourth, scoring runs through some wellplaced hits.

Rangers counted the next inning scoring one run, but were left rueing a great opportunity, unable to score any further from a bases loaded position.

Next inning saw Jess White and Katie Maiden produce with the bat, allowing Wangaratta to claw another run back, but the Grizzly Bears scored another three runs in the bottom of the fourth due to some fielding errors.

Being down 7-2 going into the last inning, Rangers rallied to score four runs through hits to Jess White and Makayla Pool, but unfortunately came up just

short dropping the game by one run, 7-6 in the end.

On the performance, coach Warfe was happy with the development that the team has shown over the season so far, which will lead to better results in the future.

Wangaratta’s juniors are back in action this week after two weeks off, game starting at 11:30am and first pitch for the women coming at 2pm.

Seniors social tennis proves a hit WANGARATTA Lawn, Croquet and Pickleball Club hosted the latest round of the North East seniors tennis calendar on November 19.

NE seniors tennis president Michael Falkenberg was pleased to have 40 players register for the social round robin tournament.

He said numbers are starting to stabilise and grow following the disruption of the COVID periods.

He noted there were some new senior players to Wangaratta as well as many returnees, and that some had come over the day previous to explore the region.

Players came from many locations such as Frankston, Bendigo, Yarrawonga and Euroa to enjoy the scenic Merriwa Park setting and enjoy the club’s hospitality.

Borshmann eager to lead the Dees NEWLY appointed president of the Milawa Football Netball Club, Jarrod Borschmann, is psyched up at the prospect of the Dees thriving in 2024.

A true son of the club, Borschmann practically bleeds red and blue, with almost 250 games, a club best and fairest and five premierships to his name under the Grand Old Flag.

With long-time committee members Greg Cherry, Steve Williamson and Bruce Graham stepping down after decades of combined service, Borschmann said he was excited to work with the new committee and help move the club onto bigger and better things on and off the field and court.

“We’ve got a pretty big-sized committee this year, everyone’s supportive so that will make it a whole lot easier on everyone there,” he said.

“If anyone needs a chop out, there’s someone there, which is good.

“We’ll be trying to improve on last year, see if we can get a good base going forward.

“I was supposed to start as vice president and come into the presidency role, but a few things got shuffled around and I wasn’t sure whether I’d be able to commit this year because my young fella plays junior league,

but I’ve decided to commit and my family’s supportive of that.”

Borschmann’s former vice president role will be split between Nick Giggins and Kim Michelini, with Margie Christensen (treasurer) and Brad Essex (secretary) rounding out the executive.

Jami Ussher, Daniel Larkings, Lee Turnbull, Tim Mortimer, Tammy Vincent, Mick Batey, John Conroy and Kerrie Gray will form the general committee.

Preseason has already begun for Milawa’s footballers, with the club having announced a raft of new player signings from within the O&K and from outside leagues.

To date, 10 new players have been announced, coming in to bolster a largely retained Demons roster.

On the netball side of things, senior trials for A grade, B grade and B reserve squads will take place this Thursday from 6pm at the Barr Reserve outdoor courts, with two other sessions on Tuesday, November 28 and Thursday, November 30.

BEN Brisbourne dominated the Gundagai Cup weekend, winning two of the feature races.

Suparazi ($3.60) claimed the $100,000 Snake Gully Cup at Gundagai on Friday, saluting by more than a length, while Oceans Of Stanima ($7) won the $34,000 Hair Of The Dog Cup on Saturday.

Suparazi is now eligible to contest the 2024 $3 million Big Dance, which will be run and won at Royal Randwick on the first Tuesday in November.

“He’s done a super job this whole prep and now has the opportunity to run in the Big Dance in 12 months time,” Brisbourne said.

“It’s nice that the cherry’s there to go to that race so we’ll wait and see where he’s at this time next year.”

DARCY Wilson is a Saint.

The Wangaratta Rovers and Murray Bushrangers product was drafted to St Kilda with pick 18 of the first round of the AFL Draft on Monday night.

Incredibly, Wilson was one of four Bushrangers selected within the first round with Albury duo Connor O’Sullivan (pick 11, Geelong) and Phoenix Gothard (pick 12, GWS)

Wilson was swamped by family and friends when his name was called out.

“It was super having everyone there,” he said.

“It was such a good atmosphere especially with all of the Bushies boys who were picked up.

“I don’t think Bushies have ever had four players picked that early so it was

an amazing experience and something I’ll never forget.”

Arguably the craziest part of the night came when Gothard was selected at pick 12.

With Gothard tipped to go late in the first round or possibly the second, it was a surprise selection that nobody saw coming so early in the proceedings.
