DECISION TIME Councillors’ call on Uniting’s proposed $13m social housing development in CBD
THE fate of a proposed $13 million social housing development in Wangaratta’s central business district will be in the hands of Rural City of Wangaratta councillors tomorrow night. A planning application lodged with council proposes to build three separate three-storey buildings, containing 44 one, two and three bedroom units to provide housing to disadvantaged persons.

The existing 16 Wesley Flats - owned by Uniting Care Goulburn North East which is now part of Uniting Vic. Tas - will be demolished to accommodate the build in Templeton Street. A report from council
officers at tomorrow evening’s February meeting recommends councillors issue a notice of decision to grant the permit. Approval would be subject to various conditions, and includes a partial waiver on car parking spaces (20 to be provided). The report indicates that 13 objections and six letters of support were received on the proposal. Grounds of objection
included: Ƕ +-$1 4 ) . 0-$/4 concerns; Ƕ 1 '*+( )/ )*/ -$"#/ to area and unit density is too high; Ƕ $) - . /- Ƣ ) lack of parking; Ƕ 0) .$- ' + *+' will gather in King George Gardens; Ƕ .#*+ . 0-$/4 *) -).ǜ Ƕ 1 '*+( )/ 2$'' change character of the area;

In their report to council, officers said the recommendation to support a planning permit was based on a “merits assessment of the proposal having regard to the applicable policies, objectives and decision guidelines in the Wangaratta Planning Scheme.”
The report noted that the proposal is not a standard/conventional housing development for the general real estate market. It says the social housing to be run by a private/ charitable organisation, at a higher ‘strategic’ level, “achieves consistency with the Wangaratta Planning Scheme and is suitable for support.” ■ Continued page 2
