Hub cash hope AN application for $4 million in Federal Government funding could help grant Wangaratta Senior Citizens Club’s New Year wish: progress on the mooted Wareena Park community hub. Rural City of Wangaratta director - community and infrastructure, Marcus Goonan, said council had been invited to complete a stage two application for the Growing Regions Fund in relation to the project.

The Growing Regions program uses a two-stage application process, with applicants required to submit expressions of interest in the first stage, and then invited to submit a full application
if assessed as meeting the requirements. Mr Goonan said council would submit the stage two application by mid-January, seeking $4 million to be matched by a $4 million council contribution, for work on the community hub and an intergenerational play and exercise area on the former Olympic Pool site.
The outcome of the application is expected to be known around April. “We are currently refining the application before final submission,” Mr Goonan said. Wangaratta Senior Citizens Club, which has advocated strongly for the community hub, has lent its support to the application. Current club president
Michael Chambeyron, who took on the role from Alan Moylan in mid-2023, said as the group’s membership continued to rise, there was a growing need for the hub planned as part of the Wareena Park Masterplan. The facility has been mentioned as a potential fit for the long-promised home of the senior citizens club, which has been based
‘temporarily’ at Ford Street’s Tara Court complex since its original clubrooms made way for Wangaratta’s Big W store. Mr Chambeyron said senior citizens were assured at that time that provision would be made by council for new clubrooms, but the wait had extended beyond 20 years. ■ Continued page 2
