Rehab centre opens 30-bed facilityy aims to help pp people p recover closer to support pp networks

PEOPLE with substance addiction problems will be able to get easier access to rehabilitation services in Wangaratta after a 30-bed alcohol and drug residential rehabilitation facility was officially opened by Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday.

The alcohol and drug rehab centre on Greta Road includes 24-hour care and support for people who have been through withdrawal or stabilisation and need to continue their treatment.

The facility, costing about $15 million, aims to keep local people living closer to their support networks, with other like-facilities in Corio and Traralgon.

With a mix of single and double bedrooms with shared bathrooms, the facility also includes consulting, staff and support areas, several shared spaces including a kitchen, dining, lounge and activity areas, and an extensive outdoor deck and landscaped areas for outdoor program activities.

It will take in people from across the region and the state, giving them access to tailored care helping them get their lives back on track as they recover from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.

had many people come to us and say look we’ve got an ICE problem, we’ve got significant challenges here - alcohol and other drugs - and we need the facilities here rather than people having to go away (to another part of the state),” Mr Andrews said.

“The centre is fantastic for Wangaratta as the gateway to the North East

and it will provide homestyle beds with the very best of care with wrap-around services including the very best in primary health care.

“There will be GP services all the way through to very specific drug and alcohol treatment.

“The Wangaratta facility is great for families because it means that loved ones who need that care and

support don’t have to leave the community their family and carers live in, and they are critically important to.

“This in every way is not a cost to the budget, it’s a profound investment with better health outcomes, dignity, inclusion and making sure that regional Victoria absolutely gets what it deserves.”

Police seek evading vehicle LOCAL police are searching for a blue Subaru XV bearing stolen NSW plates, which is alleged to have failed to stop under police direction on the evening of April 14.

According to a Wangaratta police spokesperson, officers attempted to intercept the vehicle bearing registration AMI48W for a routine traffic stop along Wangaratta-Whitfield Road at approximately 7:05pm, before the

vehicle continued north towards Wangaratta.

FED UP: Wangaratta-based Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy has urged the State Government to take a holistic approach to road safety throughout the North East.

A BILL which hopes to reduce the incidence of phone use and seatbelt negligence will only be effective if funding also addresses other major rural road safety concerns, according to Wangaratta-based Ovens Valley state MP Tim McCurdy.

The Road Safety Amendment Bill 2022 recently fronted the Legislative Council, as part of the State Government’s commitment to halve the road toll by 2030, with new amendments proposed to provide police the ability to use images from new road cameras to prosecute offenders.

The bill would also expand the scope of actions punishable by immediate loss of licence.

Speaking in parliament last week, Mr McCurdy said rules to limit the road toll needed to engage a holistic approach to road safety.

“This is a step forward, particularly on the seatbelt side of things - I am pleased to hear that this process will be sent to a trained individual to ensure proper checks and balances are in place for verification and protection against technological error,” he said.

“Although this initiative aims to effectively reduce the road

toll, I wish to stress that investment solely into this new technology cannot be the only method used to reduce the road toll on our roads.

“For instance, if we consider the massive increases in wire rope barriers across Victoria, having a camera fining motorists on their mobile phones or not wearing a seatbelt at a later date is not going to prevent them from the grave consequences that can arise if they collide head on with a wire rope barrier.”

Mr McCurdy also urged the State Government to assign further funding to address loose gravel and potholes which he believes have become an increasingly present threat on roadways throughout the North East.

“Road safety and the number of lives lost on our roads should not be dependent on your postcode,” he told parliament.

“Band-aid fixes like lowering the speed limit to 80kph will not remove the constant risk that regional drivers face when they hit large chunks of loose gravel or potholes.

“It’s time the Labor Government permanently invests in our regional roads network.”

Local entrepreneur rejoins GOTAFE as director GOTAFE has appointed Wangaratta entrepreneur Luke Surace as its new director of Trades and Built Environment following a competitive recruitment process.

Mr Surace joins GOTAFE from The Academy, a learning institution that provides leading-edge educational programs and vocational training for students in years 11 and 12 with a passion for sports, particularly AFL. As director and co-founder, he created real-world programs designed for practical learners,

which fostered passion in disengaged students.

Mr Surace partnered with GOTAFE to deliver this innovative program to students across Victoria, including in his hometown Wangaratta.

Luke has a long history with GOTAFE, originally completing his Diploma of Graphic Design in 2007.

Two years later, he returned to complete a Diploma of Education and Training before working as a sessional graphic design

educator and eventually becoming a course coordinator.

During his tenure as course coordinator, Mr Surace developed initiatives to increase student contact hours and was instrumental in leading the iPad project team, incorporating iPads into course delivery across GOTAFE and providing interdepartmental support to staff.

He will now lead training and education for automotive, engineering, electrotechnology, building construction, plumb-

ing and refrigeration.

The current skills shortage and increased demand for courses in this sector is reflected in the Victorian Government’s Free TAFE Priority Courses.

Eligible courses include Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) (CPC40110), Certificate IV in Engineering (MEM40119) and Certificate IV in Plumbing and Service (CPC40912).

Wait on Wareena Park funding for seniors’ club

By SIMONE KERWIN FUNDING is still being sought by council to progress its Wareena Park Masterplan, which would include creation of a community hub offering a new home for the Wangaratta Senior Citizens Club.

Marcus Goonan, Rural City of Wangaratta director infrastructure services, said council remained hopeful of attracting funding for projects includ-

ing the Wareena Park development.

“At this point in time, we haven’t received any funding; the last funding application we put in was not successful,” Mr Goonan said.

“We will certainly continue to advocate for the Wareena Park community hub, which is one of the projects on our advocacy list.

“We will continue to look for opportunities to seek funding.”

Mr Goonan said he would “like to

hope” that funds may be allocated in the upcoming State Government budget for local projects including the masterplan.

The Wareena Park masterplan was adopted in 2020, and Mr Goonan said late last year that a significant amount of external funding would be required to enable council to complete the works outlined in the masterplan.

The 10-year plan takes in the for-

mer Olympic Pool site, Wareena Park Oval, Coronation Kindergarten, and Wareena Park Bowls Club.

Plans for the area include the community hub, which would provide a long-awaited new home for the senior citizens, who are currently based in Tara Court, off Ford Street.

It would also incorporate a seniors’ exercise area, intergenerational play space, and an event lawn for small gatherings.

From page 1 “We would like to see more beds so people can stay in their communities and people who want to be away from their communities such as metropolitan people might like to come to our region to do their recovery,” she said Ms Donnellan explained that people who have substance issues often neglect their health and the programs will offer physical and psychological therapy for residents.

“This takes place through exercise, mindfulness, and group and individual programs, alongside living skills, and work on building relationships,” Ms Donnellan said.

Gateway Health deputy chair Felicity Williams said one of the reasons why they wanted to build the facility in Wangaratta was to try and keep people with their

families and their supports.

“We know that this is a protective factor and is absolutely crucial in being able to overcome what is a steep mountain to climb,” Ms Williams said.

“When people leave the facility education and employment is a great outcome and we know that this is huge on keeping people on the right side of things.”

“The unemployment rate is low and there are jobs available and people just need to be in the right space and frame of mind.

“We’ve talked to employers and people who have gotten through addiction and over the last seven years that I’ve been involved with this and I’ve talked to employers who have taken on people who have overcome addiction and they’ve actually said they are the best workers they’ve ever had.”

Bring some comfort to a child in need ‘BOOKS and Blankets’ is the theme of the Wangaratta Library’s knitting and crochet community project, as it returns in 2022.

As part of the project, local knitting and crocheting enthusiasts are being encouraged to create a blanket or toy to be included in a comfort package designed for children aged up to 10 years.

The library will add a new book to each item, and the packs will be donated to local not-forprofit organisations, to be distributed to children who have been affected by homelessness,

Concern expressed over threats to kill A WANGARATTA man is set to remain in custody after he was deemed an unacceptable risk to the safety of the community following a spate of threatening encounters at local service stations.

Appearing from Ravenhall Custody via WebeX at Wangaratta Magistrates Court last week Thursday, the defendant pleaded his innocence to Magistrate Ian Watkins.

He had previously been released on bail under conditions he not attend service stations, after threatening to slit the throat of a station attendant on September 21.

Evidence before the court also alleged the man had stripped off his clothes after being unable to pay for a coffee in early September.

Defence counsel Jonathan Rattray told the court his client had a community treatment order (CTO) and could be released under a court integrated services program (CISP) bail condition.

He said any time spent in prison could well outweigh an eventual sentence, however, Mr Watkins said the slew of offending, which also saw the applicant allegedly brandish a bread knife at a former partner in breach of an intervention order, was serious.

“He is a significant risk to the community whether he’s on a CTO or not,” he said.

There is hope a forensicare report outlining the applicant’s mental wellbeing will be before the court ahead of the matter returning for contest mention on June 20.

‘Buzzy’ times ahead for kids WITH the help of funding from the State Government, the Rural City of Wangaratta will present two exciting events to activate the Wangaratta CBD and inspire the community this week.

Council’s manager of arts, culture and events, Simone Nolan, said starting tomorrow, and with four shows daily until Saturday, King George V Gardens will be home to Bees

by Polyglot Theatre.

“It’s a joyful, interactive work in which children are welcomed into a world of community, communication, wonder, and imagination,” she said.

Three talented performers dressed as human-sized bees busy themselves into the creation of a community alongside the children who can transform into bees as they interact and play.

Children are immersed in the sounds, shapes and scents of the bee world,

from their familiar buzz to honeycomb houses and vibrant pollen.

It is a free event and no bookings are necessary.

On Saturday the activity will move into the streets and cafes of the CBD with Battle of the Buskers taking place between 10am and 3pm.

Registered performers will be rotating through six locations around the CBD wowing the public with their musical talent and vying for their vote to win Wangaratta’s first ever “Battle of the Buskers”.

Ms Nolan said after some delays with COVID, council is thrilled to have the event take place and with an influx of participants, public voting will be via QR codes at busking locations or online.

Labor promise a National Anti-Corruption Commission THE Australian Labor Party has promised a National Anti-Corruption Commission by the end of 2022, according to Labor’s candidate for Indi, Nadia David.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese has confirmed that a National Anti-Corruption Commission would be one of the first priorities of an incoming Labor government.

“A National Anti-Corruption Commission is a key issue for Australians, particularly in Indi,” Ms David said.

“Without a National AntiCorruption Commission, we will just see more rorts and serious and systemic corruption.”

Ms David, a former NSW Police prosecutor, said Labor’s National Anti-Corruption Commission would be like a standing Royal Commission with a broad jurisdiction to investigate ministers and public servants, with complete independence from government.

The commissioner will be appointed for a fixed term,

with security of tenure similar to a federal judge, and will have the power to investigate allegations of serious and systemic corruption both before and after its establishment.

The National Anti-Corruption Commission will have the power to hold public hearings if the commission determines it’s in the public interest to do so, and to refer findings of corrupt conduct that may amount to criminal conduct to the relevant Director of Public

Prosecutions for action.

“This is a strong anticorruption body that will be properly funded and will frankly have a big job on its hands after years of the Morrison Government operating as though it is above the law,” Ms David said.

“After discussing our plan in detail with Shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus this week I’m absolutely convinced Labor has an excellent model that will uncover and stamp out corruption at a federal level.”

ACTION: Labor’s candidate for Indi, Nadia David, has backed her party’s commitment to establish a National AntiCorruption Commission by the end of 2022.

Locals dig deep to raise $65k for kids WANGARATTA CFA members were out in numbers last Friday and had a generous response from the local community who dug deep for the kids in support of the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Wangaratta was again among the top 10 regional town managing to raise $65,565.

CFA Wangaratta member and appeal coordinator Alex Carmody said the overall total within the rural city was $85,343, which included Boorhaman $9801, Glenrowan $6945, Eldorado $2993 and Springhurst $3575.

He said Woolworths Wangaratta has raised $4553, while longtime stalwart Peter McQuade had collected $4602.

After a difficult two years with a heavy reliance on online fundraising, CFA volunteers from across Wangaratta and surrounds were excited to hit the streets in their local communi-

ties, rattling tins and collecting money.

Mr Carmody said despite the number of volunteers being down a little due to COVID, a strong team still participated in the appeal.

“We were very happy with the work that was put in by our volunteers and the response made by the members of the community with their generosity,” he said.

“We were thrilled to be out and about in the community and being able to interact after a tough two years due to COVID.” CFA acting chief officer Rohan Luke was pleased with the efforts put in by all CFA members across the state and couldn’t be more proud for the contributions made.

The total amount raised in the annual fundraiser for Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital was $22,328,154.

Citizen scientists can lend a hand CARBOOR Upper Education Area, Mount Porepunkah Scenic Reserve and Mudgegonga Bush Reserve are among the locations included in a new program calling for ‘citizen scientists’ to help gather biodiversity information.

As part of Citizen Science Month this April, Parks Victoria is encouraging people to help protect Victoria’s special places by joining the Data Discovery Program in local parks.

Hosted on the iNaturalist app, the program aims to collect valuable data on biodiversity at more than 30 parks and reserves across the state.

Locals can help by visiting one of the selected parks, capturing images of plant and animal species on a smartphone, and uploading them to iNaturalist.

Parks Victoria will use observations reviewed by iNaturalist to provide quality research data to conservation and science staff who are working to protect nature.

Citizen science can make significant breakthroughs by finding species in places they may not have been seen before, and helps builds new relationships between people, science, and nature.

It can also assist with evidence-based decisionmaking, and gives volunteers the opportunity to support native plants and animals across the Parks Victoria estate.

Rehab centre a credit to community THE opening of the long-awaited Wangaratta alcohol and drug residential rehabilitation facility on Greta Road is a credit to the local organisations and community that made it happen.

Several years ago Wangaratta was experiencing a chronic problem with the terrible impact of the drug ICE that impacted multiple sections of our community.

Police taskforces in Wangaratta managed to break open organised drug trafficking rings, bringing them to justice, but the scourge of illicit drugs is an ongoing problem for the rural city, as it is for other areas.

Due to the severe nature of many illicit drugs, outcomes for people caught up in this world are generally unfavourable, with other criminal behaviour often connected to addiction.

The circular effect on these people’s families, friends and the wider community is devastating if they don’t get the help they need.

Organisations such as Gateway Health, Odyssey House, Wangaratta council and multiple others came together to tell government that a rehab centre was a number one priority for Wangaratta and the region.

Labor MP Jaclyn Symes and Nationals MP Tim McCurdy also lobbied hard with the State Government who finally approved the funding.

It was this initial work by stakeholders and the ongoing work behind the scenes to make this centre happen that is testament to what a community of local families, who spoke up, can achieve.

Wangaratta was a great choice of location as it will provide a central place for the region’s people who want to break the cycle and change their lives.

North East Victoria misses out again LIKE most regional Victorians, I was thrilled to learn that the 2026 Commonwealth Games were to be held in regional Victoria.

What a great opportunity for us to showcase the many wonderful locations and facilities we have to the world.

It was perhaps unsurprising, but nevertheless disappointing, to see that the government considers regional Victoria to consist of only Geelong, Ballarat, and Bendigo.

Yes, Gippsland has been thrown in the mix, but it is a huge area consisting of many townships, so we don’t actually know where events will be staged yet.

I believe that Premier Andrews has missed a golden opportunity to showcase the North East to the world.

We have some of the most scenic views in the state, and some fantastic facilities that would be perfect for the Commonwealth Games, but once again, the government has ignored North East Victoria.

This is a huge missed opportunity for the government to show some real intent and invest into the North East, upgrading facilities and infrastructure, providing jobs and opportunities that we haven’t had before.

I will be fighting hard to get the government to reconsider this decision, as we all know what a great opportunity this would be for the region.

HELEN Haines (MHR, Indi) is desperately running up the mast, one of her two policy flags, the alleged need for another level of policing.

This time it’s the policing of the parliament, because the apparent need for a Federal ICAC only arises if the opposition is weak or lazy.

Of course Haines says we need one because she has no traction in the parliament, and doesn’t have the grit to do her own investigation or the support of a large party behind her to assist her.

Her answer is to get more expensive institutions staffed by more public servants to do her job, in her electorate.

Why doesn’t she have a defence or security policy?

I VISITED my mother in St John’s Aged Care Home on Monday where she is enduring yet another lockdown, this one of two weeks duration and undetermined end.

The aged in care have endured much longer lockdowns than the rest of the community with much more limited ability to communicate by technology and more dependence on others for life’s pleasures.

St John’s has been in repeated lockdown this year while the rest of us have been relatively free to live normally.

These lockdowns are decreed by the bureaucrats of the local public health unit for the sake of the residents’ “health”.

To my mind the quote from CS Lewis is applicable: “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.... The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes

sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

It is just cruel after all that we have been through to keep locking down the aged care homes on the basis that one or two people in a home of many people have caught COVID. There are other ways of managing this problem.

Salvage centre items to go under the hammer

By KURT HICKLING AFTER 22 years, Bob Looby has closed the doors at the Wangaratta Drive-in Salvage Centre.

The 74 year old owner/ operator said it’s time for retirement.

But there will be one big last hurrah at the salvage centre, which has provided new and second-hand materials to all and sundry for the past two decades.

Mr Looby said an auction at the centre on Saturday, April 30, from 10am, will have a large range of quality new and second-hand products to suit the renovator or the professional builder.

Red gum/messmate seasoned hardwood, glass,

doors, windows, steel and a variety of machinery, including a spindle moulder, are but a few of the items.

“There will be something at the auction for everyone with over 500 lots to be sold,” Mr Looby said.

“We are expecting a big turnout with plenty of keen buyers.

MP’s $250m tourism wish INDI independent federal MP Helen Haines wants $250m allocated each year for a Regional Tourism Fund to support infrastructure projects that increase visitation rates and grow long-term local jobs in the tourism, accommodation, and hospitality sectors.

Important witness opposes key claims

THE first SAS soldier to testify on behalf of Ben Roberts-Smith at the defamation trial he launched has contradicted key allegations lobbed against the war veteran.

The “very good” friend of the decorated soldier travelled from his home in the United States to appear in the Federal Court on Tuesday.

The Victoria Cross recipient is suing The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald for defamation over reports claiming he com-

mitted war crimes in Afghanistan including murder, and acts of bullying and domestic violence.

The 43-year-old denies all claims of wrongdoing, while the mastheads are defending them as true.

The witness codenamed Person Five began giving evidence about a 2009 mission to a Taliban compound dubbed Whiskey 108 in Uruzgan province where he chose Mr Roberts-Smith to be his 2IC, or second in command.

The former Royal Marine

said it was an easy choice after seeing how capable the two-metre tall soldier was following SAS selection, and all reports stated he was performing well.

The patrol commander at the time said his troop were clearing along the compound walls when he was called back to an unnatural spot with “loads of long green grass” covering a secret tunnel entrance.

Person 35 had the appropriate stature to crawl through the tunnel and did so after removing his body

armour, helmet and pistol, he said.

“He was in there no more than a couple of minutes, he then came back, stuck his head out and said it was clear.”

This evidence contradicts that of multiple special service soldiers subpoenaed by the newspapers who say prisoners were located and pulled out of the tunnel.

It is alleged that Mr Roberts-Smith executed one of these prisoners who had a prosthetic leg by unloading machine gun fire into his

back, while another was said to have been shot by Person Four.

The media outlets allege that Person Five ordered the kill while another witness, Person 41, said he watched Mr Roberts-Smith order Person Four to shoot the elderly Afghan prisoner dead.

This was said to “blood the rookie”, referring to the young recruit’s first kill on a mission.

On Tuesday Person Five said he had never used the term himself.

He first heard someone had accused him of using the term in May 2018 via newspaper articles, days before he left the Australian elite force, he said.

Certainty welcomed for new energy economy AUSTRALIAN companies will get more taxpayer support to take their place in the world’s new energy and high-tech economy if the Morrison government is re-elected.

Federal subsidies to reinvent fossil fuels and mine new minerals, announced on the campaign trail on Tuesday, have been welcomed by industry.

Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association Deputy Chief Executive Damian Dwyer said the policy announce-

ment recognises the importance of gas for decades into the future.

“This greater certainty for industry will be critical for Australia’s economic recovery and commitment to decarbonise as part of a cleaner energy future,” Mr Dwyer told AAP. As well as bankrolling a new era for fossil fuels, support will go to unlock the critical minerals needed for wind and solar components, pumped hydro widgets, electric vehicle batteries, defence technolo-

gies and future high-tech communications.

Up to $40 million has been earmarked for Woodside Energy’s Burrup carbon capture and storage (CCS) and transport project, and up to $20 million will support the design and construction of Japanese giant Mitsui’s Mid West CCS hub.

Police plead for help after show stabbing THE investigation into the fatal stabbing of a teenager at Sydney’s Royal Easter Show is being frustrated by a lack of co-operation from potential witnesses.

Police have still not identified the person who stabbed 17-year-old Uati Faletolu on April 11, despite hours spent reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.

Many people witnessed the brawl and stabbing and may have video but are yet to come forward, Homicide Squad Commander Danny Doherty says.

“It’s not the time now to stay silent,” he said on Tuesday.

Plenty of people may have unknowingly captured footage of the stabbing.

“They may think it’s inconsequential but it could be incredibly important to us,” Detective Superintendent Doherty said.

“They may have captured unknowingly or inadvertently who is actually responsible for (the) stabbing.”

Det Supt Doherty said people may not come forward because they thought they didn’t have any useful information, or they felt they had to stay “staunch”.

One teenager who had been arrested had not

helped the investigation, which the homicide detective attributed to “misguided loyalty”.

He said the family of the victim was being as supportive as possible.

“It’s the associates of the group that really frustrate us,” Det Supt Doherty said.

“There’s a 15-year-old who obviously would know and there’s a 16-year-old who would know as well. There’s other people who would know.

“So far, they’ve lost their mate and close associate and they’re not coming forward.”

The Burrup and Mid West hubs will cut greenhouse gas emissions by a combined 7.4 million tonnes per year from 2028, drive more than $1 billion of investment and will create more than 2000 jobs, according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Under a national strategy, Australian hydrogen production for export and domestic use could generate more than $50 billion in additional GDP by 2050.

Up to $70 million will support BP Australia’s $250 million-plus H2Kwinana Clean Hydrogen Industrial Hub. The Western Australian Government’s Pilbara Hydrogen Hub will also receive up to $70 million from federal coffers.

Two early stage projects will get grants of up to $3 million - Engie Hydrogen’s green hydrogen hub in the Pilbara and Santos’ Carnarvon hydrogen engineering design work.

Calls to ease COVID-19 isolation rules BUSINESS groups are calling for the easing of the seven-day isolation requirement for household contacts of people with COVID-19.

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Business NSW say the rules should be relaxed to ease staffing shortages, wanting those deemed close contacts to be allowed to work and undergo daily rapid antigen tests instead.

Business NSW chief executive Daniel Hunter said with such high vaccination rates, Australians have demonstrated a capacity to live

and work with the virus.

“The current isolation rules are providing a barrier to businesses as healthy people are forced to isolate unnecessarily,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

With NSW and Victorian airport workers now exempt from household contact rules, there was an “inconsistency and unfairness”.

“This needs to be fixed so that all businesses can have fair access to workers,” he said.

“Business needs certainty and we know that they are already struggling with sup-

ply chain issues and staff ff shortages.”

Victorian Chamber chieff executive Paul Guerra said staff shortages continued to hamper business.

“We need to release the handbrake and enable businesses to operate at the maximum capacity possible and lead our economic recovery,” he said.

Labor frontbencher Bill Shorten agrees, saying a week of isolation is too long.

“Get vaccinated. If you’re sick, stay at home but other than that, seven days isolation is unwieldy,” he told the Nine Network.

Author Grantlee Kieza to visit Wangaratta Library THE community is invited to join award award-winning journalist, biographer and author Grantlee Kieza as he discusses his latest book, The Kelly Hunters, at the Wangaratta Library next week.

The book is described as a fascinating and compelling account of the other side of the legendary Kelly story, beginning with the ambush of three policemen in 1878 and ending with the final battle at Glenrowan.

Mr Keiza discusses the scene from when Ned Kelly and his band of ‘young tearaways’ ambushed and killed three policemen in a remote mountain camp in 1878, sparking the biggest and most expensive manhunt Australia had seen.

The desperate search would end when Kelly and his gang, wearing suits of armour, tried to derail a train before waging

their final bloody gun battle with police at Glenrowan.

Mr Keiza focuses on the 20 months between these shootouts and aided by a network of informers, hundreds of lawmen, soldiers, undercover agents and a team of Aboriginal trackers, combed rugged mountains in freezing conditions in search of the outlaws.

He writes from the perspective that the police officers were brave, poorly paid and often ailing, some nearing retirement and others with young with small children, but they risked death and illness in the hope of finding the men who had killed their comrades.

The hunt for the Kelly gang became a fierce battle of egos between senior police as they prepared for their final shootout with Australia’s most infamous bushrangers, a gun battle that

etched Ned Kelly’s physical toughness and defiance of authority into Australian folklore.

Grantlee Kieza has held senior editorial positions at The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and The Courier-Mail for many years and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his writing.

He is a Walkley Award finalist and the author of 18 acclaimed books, including the recent bestsellers Macquarie, Banjo, Mrs Kelly, Monash, Sons of the Southern Cross and Bert Hinkler.

Mr Kieza is travelling from Queensland for the talk at the Wangaratta Library on Thursday, April 28 at 6pm.

Precious wildlife celebrated in Benalla exhibition A BOUTIQUE exhibition of ceramic forms created by Benalla-based artist Lorna Hobbs and inspired by endangered species is being held in the Benalla Art Gallery shop.

The Precious and Precarious collection showcases both the diversity of Ms Hobbs’ ceramic practice and a consistency of environmental messaging.

Currently president of the Broken River Potters, Ms Hobbs said the series of forms was partly a response to the devastating bushfires of 2019-2020 and also to continuing land management practices.

She said the bushfires killed or displaced three billion animals; many already listed as endangered and some critical, yet land clearing continues.

“The animals I sculpt are too precious to lose or just preciously unique and beautiful,” she said.

“Some like the numbat or Easternbarred bandicoot are little known to the majority of Australians.”

The display includes a selection of pots, mugs, brooches and small sculptures depicting Australian endangered animals.

AN exhibition which celebrates Wilam Biik (or home country in the Woiwurrung language) and how the First Peoples connect with it, opens at the Wangaratta Art Gallery on April 30.

Driver warned re–offending a quick road back to prison A WANGARATTA man who persistently breached court orders and drove while unlicenced has been urged to get “fair dinkum” by a presiding magistrate.

The 50–year–old sat quietly as Magistrate Ian Watkins lambasted his behaviour, which saw him repeatedly contravene a number of intervention orders with former partners and cause a crash on the Hume Freeway while banned from the roads.

Not only was it a fun afternoon filled with exercise and plenty of laughs, it also allowed families, friends and people from outside the school community to get involved. Students gathered sponsors for the colour run, with all proceeds being donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. The 22–student school raised an incredible $1400, and principal Wendy Walker said she was proud of the achievement and the wider Springhurst community. “It really shows just how generous our local community is, and it’s something we are very proud of, as a school,” she said.

AN $85,000 drainage upgrade at the Wangaratta Turf Club should ensure its tracks never close due to heavy rain again.

Both the turf track and the sand training track have had extensive drainage works, thanks to a joint investment from the club, the State Government, Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria.

It follows the postponement of the Wangaratta Cup meeting from early to mid-March due to inundation of the track.

Turf club chief executive officer, Paul Hoysted, said the work on the turf track was pre-emptive.

“With drought and floods, it makes concrete move and there was one area which was going to be of concern.”

That drain has been replaced with PVC piping, but the work has meant this weekend’s meeting at the turf club has had to be transferred to Wodonga.

The $50,000 works to the sand training track follow an investment of $125,000 announced by the government before the recent floods.

Mr Hoysted said it would ensure the track could be used every day of the year, “rain, hail or shine”.

“In the past if we had 10mm of

rain it would sit on sections of the tracks and horses weren’t able to train,” he said.

“This way it will make it a really safe sand track and trainers will always be able to use the track.”

Mr Hoysted said the works couldn’t have been done without the assistance of Tim McCurdy (MLA, Murray Valley) and Racing Minister, Denis Napthine, who both responded quickly to requests from the club.

“The Coalition Government is committed to ensuring the longevity of racing at Wangaratta after the recent floods left the track under water, causing substantial damage to both the course proper and the sand training track,” Mr McCurdy said.

A SURVEY of King Valley businesses indicates overwhelming support for the King Valley Infrastructure Project and its core aim to see the Wangaratta–Whitfield Road upgraded.

A total of 58 out of the 100 businesses personally invited to take part in the survey responded, with safety cited as the most important benefit of an improved road.

The businesses surveyed represented the transportation, horticultural, agricultural, retail, engineering and tourism sectors, with 88 per cent saying the entire project would stimulate business resilience and provide opportunity for growth; and 86 per cent believing it would create more local jobs.

Proponents of the project – John Bridges and Chris Hazell – said while they have faced a number of challenges due to COVID, they are now finalising the results of their research for release to the public in order to take the project to the next level.

The business survey aligned with an earlier community survey delivered to 908 households within the King Valley, in which the 406 who responded overwhelmingly supported all five elements of the infrastructure project; to see the road made fit for purpose, renamed the King Valley Road, to see the final stage of the Murray to Mountains rail trail constructed from Oxley to Cheshunt, rename the bike trail and develop a world class sculpture trail along it.

“We intend to present the results to senior representatives of the Rural City of Wangaratta to find out the process of moving forward,”

The survey of residents conducted in 2020 revealed 85 per cent of respondents believed the road from Wangaratta to Cheshunt was not fit for purpose, while a staggering 78 per cent said their vehicles had incurred some kind of damage while using the road over the past five years.

Ms Hazell said while recent improvements actioned by council under its Prosecco Road Revitalisation Project (drawn from Tourism North East‘s

Activating the King Valley Prosecco Road plan) were positive, it failed to recognise what was fundamental – the deteriorating condition of the arterial road, one of the most important roads in the Rural City of Wangaratta.

She said Tourism North East estimated 590,000 people are visiting the King Valley each year – a figure that‘s set to double over the next 10 years – on top of the increasing number of residents and businesses who commute along it each day.

“Tourism North East have missed the whole point which is that upgrading the road is imperative,” she said.

"The road is the artery and the rest of the body simply doesn‘t function without it."

Ms Hazell said she believed council didn’t fully appreciate what the King Valley offered or its economic contribution to the region, tending to focus resources on projects within Wangaratta.

She said while she was pleased elements of their own project were being taken up by council such as allocating money to design a small section of cycle trail for tourists, the road was more important.

“The King Valley is a place to live and work for in excess of 2000 residents (according to the 2021

ABS estimated residential population) and tourism is an added bonus,” Ms Hazell said.

“The economy of the Rural City of Wangaratta benefits from this.

“Build the road first and then think about what the rail trail and all the other aspects of the project will bring to the whole of the Rural City of Wangaratta.”

Having already invested an estimated 4500 volunteer hours into researching and developing the King Valley Infrastructure Project – and ensuring there was extensive community engagement along the way – the pair now say they will do whatever it takes to see it is realised.

Welcome rainfall for our traditional driest month MEAN minimum temperatures have continued to be two degrees above the April normal not only in Victoria but over most of NSW, Tasmania and QLD for the past week.

This trend is likely to continue well into next winter which means fewer frosts than normal.

There had not been much rainfall in North East Victoria this month, but fortunately the skies opened on Monday and we've seen some steady, albeit not heavy falls in Wangaratta and district.

WHAT’S UP WITH THE WEATHER?

to 9am yesterday brings the monthly total to around 28mm.

The month of April is normally one of the driest months of the year in our region.

In Wangaratta April has turned out to be the driest month of the year since 1987 with a mean rainfall of 39mms.

At the old town site from 1879 to 1986, both January and February were the driest months of the year.

At Corowa, April has been the driest month of the year since records started 115 years ago.

At Yarrawonga, April has been the driest month of the year since 1991.

The trouble spot at present is at Cocos Keeling Island which recently had its highest April temperature since 1998 with a reading of 32.2 degrees on two days this month.

It has been remarkably dry this year at Cocos Island.

The rainfall this year up to

April 17 at 228mms is the driest in 120 years of records.

Other very dry such periods from January to April were in 1906, 1952 and 1991.

For our region the years 1906 and 1952 were very wet from May right through to November, with the biggest rains in June.

For 1991 the winter was very wet with the biggest rains again in June - the spring of 1991 was relatively dry but December was wet.

Next June looks set to be very very wet and unusually mild, flooding rains the second week and again just after mid month.

Local artists head program as jazz and blues returns to live event in Wangaratta

AN Australian-centric program featuring artists including The Black Sorrows will herald the return of the live Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues this October.

Festival organisers released a sneak-peek of what they described as an “adventurous and eclectic” 2022 program during an event launch on Friday evening at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre.

The program features premier Australian jazz and

blues artists, along with international collaborations, and the annual National Jazz Awards, from Friday, October 28 to Sunday, October 30.

Festival chair Dave Fuller acknowledged the significant impact of the pandemic on the arts, but said organisers were thrilled to see the return of live events.

“Our focus this year is on an Australian-centric program that includes Australian expatriates returning from abroad and international

artists in collaboration with Australians,” Mr Fuller said.

“We’ve taken the decision this year to announce part of the program early, and to create an opportunity for people to register now for our limited release early-bird tickets.”

First Nations musician and songwriter Jess Hitchcock, who has toured recently with Kate Miller-Heidke and Paul Kelly, and is a teacher, composer and artist with Australia’s Indigenous opera

company Short Black Opera, will revisit her jazz roots in a festival-curated project of new arrangements of lesser known standards and originals.

Finnish pianist Kari Ikon will return for a worldpremiere collaboration with Melbourne-based bassist Helen Svoboda, while Austrian-based Brazilian composer/guitarist Emiliano Sampaio will bring a collaborative iteration of his renowned ‘Mereneu Project’ nonet, featuring players

from Brazil, Germany and Australia.

Festival favourite Wanderlust will convene from across Australia to celebrate its 30th anniversary at the festival; the always imaginative and innovative Scott Tinkler will bring together a collection of Australia’s finest improvisers in the Antipodean Collective; and the powerhouse collaborative ensemble This World will draw together the talents of Mike Nock, Hamish

Stuart, Julien Wilson and Jonathan Schwartz.

Making their festival debut are experimental jazz artists, Queensland duo Shamin, featuring Sophie Min on piano and Benjamin Shannon on drums, as well as Tasmania’s Julius Schwing Trio.

2021 National Jazz Awards winner Matthew Thomson will perform with his Sydney trio, comprising 2018 NJA winner Alex Hirlian on drums and Jaques Emery on bass.

AFL umpire respect query after 50m penalty

HAWTHORN gun James Sicily has admitted he has no idea what constitutes umpire disrespect after his AFL side copped a dubious 50-metre penalty in their upset win against Geelong.

Cats forward Tom Hawkins went flying in the third quarter of the MCG clash after a minor push from his Hawks opponent, with his effort to possibly draw attention from the AFL’s match review officer for staging.

and Jack Gunston were seen talking to an umpire after the decision and raising their arms as they protested, resulting in a 50m penalty being awarded.

“You both looked at the (big) screen (for the replay),” the umpire was heard saying on TV coverage.

“And then you had your arms out ... it’s umpire respect, OK?” Sicily said he was not clear what the umpires’ interpretation was regarding interac-

tions with players and what represents disrespect.

“It’s a difficult one, I feel like if it’s not demonstrative ... sometimes it’s just a reflex, it’s been that way for so long,” he told Fox Footy.

“The rule is there to implement what they’re trying to implement, we’ve got to try and respect it as much as possible.

“But it’s definitely hard when games get as tight as they do, emotions are high.”

It followed an umpire, in

Thursday night’s clash between the Brisbane Lions and Collingwood, being heard telling the hosts’ defender Harris Andrews “arms out is 50” after he gave away a 50m penalty for raising his arms protesting a decision.

A number of other players weren’t penalised for similar actions throughout round five.

Melbourne great Garry Lyon labelled the umpiring a disgrace and said AFL football operations boss Brad Scott must sort it out immediately.

“What we’ve seen over the course of the weekend suggests there’s a crisis that Brad Scott’s got to sort out,” Lyon told Fox Footy.

“He sorts it out (on Monday) morning otherwise it’s a disgrace ... right now it’s embarrassing our professional competition is run like this.”

But Geelong coach Brad Scott said direction from umpires should be clear at this point of the season, although he admitted players might struggle to adhere.

“It’s incumbent on us to say to the players, ‘this is the way the game’s being interpreted, your opinion does not matter, my opinion does not matter, let’s just be as good as we can at understanding it’,” Scott said.

“Does that mean we won’t transgress? I suspect we will because it’s a highly emotional game.”

Zerafa and Hardman trade blows ahead of fight MICHAEL Zerafa says he can’t wait to put Issac Hardman “to sleep” after punches were thrown with their world title eliminator weigh-in descending into chaos.

For the second time the pair had to be separated, after they also came to blows at a pre-fight media conference last month.

Tex Walker slams Trent Cotchin’s ‘deliberate’ kick VETERAN Adelaide forward Taylor Walker has hit out at Richmond star Trent Cotchin’s “deliberate” kick at him during the Crows’ upset AFL win.

Walker, who served a six-game suspension for making a racist comment during a SANFL game last year, claims the AFL’s match review officer would have ruled him out for a month if reacted how Cotchin did.

The three-time Tigers premiership skipper escaped with a $2000 fine for kicking Walker during the third quarter of Saturday’s match at Adelaide Oval.

Walker shoved Cotchin over the boundary line during the round-five match, with the Richmond midfielder then lifting his leg up towards the former Crows captain, prompting a furious reaction.

Adelaide had the last laugh, going on to win by 19-points.

The 31-year-old, who booted five goals in a matchwinning display against Richmond, was still frustrated by the incident on Tuesday.

“Especially when it’s deliberate,” Walker told Triple M when host Chris Dittmar

said Cotchin needed a bigger sanction from the AFL. “I tell you what, if the shoe was on the other foot I would have been missing the next month.”

He also claimed GWS star Toby Greene, who is set to return from a six-game ban for pushing an umpire last year, would have been suspended for an entire season for an incident like Cotchin’s.

Walker has returned to Adelaide’s team in stunning form, kicking nine goals in two appearances despite being unable to play games at any level during his highprofile suspension.

Zerafa, whose record is 29-4 (18KO) said he hadn’t encountered such pre-fight antics before.

Hardman is a former MMA fighter whose record stands at 12-0 (10KO) since switching full-time to boxing.

“It just shows he’s intimidated,

he’s too emotional,” the 30-yearold Zerafa said.

“He’s an absolute animal with no respect and no class, it’s pretty disappointing.”

Before things turned physical Hardman said his preparation for the biggest fight of his career had been spot on.

He said he’d spent time training with star light middleweight Tim Tszyu, who Zerafa was scheduled to fight last year before a bizarre late withdrawal.

Melb City win 3-0 against United in AFC MELBOURNE City FC have scored their first Asian Champions League win, with a stunning 3-0 victory over United City after Marco Tilio launched two balls into the back of the net in the second half.

Melbourne City charged into their second group G match in the AFC on Monday but their nine attempts to score in the first half were thwarted until Stefan Colakovski’s 34th minute strike.

City secured its second goal just before the hour mark after a line-splitting

ball from Scott Jamieson at left-back opened up the pitch for Endoh, who cut the ball back for Tilio to finish.

“It’s good to score a couple goals but it’s about the team performance,” Tilio said later.

“I think tonight we went out and did reasonably well to get the result.

There’s always plenty of improvement there but

‘Pies run continues, Hawks show fight

By WILLSON MACK WANGARATTA’S winning run continued in the A grade netball over the weekend.

After back-to-back wins to start the season, the Magpies made the trip to Martin Park to take on Wodonga.

Wangaratta got out to a four goal buffer (12-8) at quarter time and never looked back as Issy Byrne and Hannah Grady caused headaches for the home team.

The ‘Pies put on a 10 goal to nine last quarter to run away convincing 47-34 victors.

Wangaratta’s Georgia Clark continued her stellar start to the year at the

attacking end, netting 32 goals, while Wodonga’s Ellie Ainsworth was named her side’s best.

“It was great to get another win on the board, it’s always nice to start the season well,” Wangaratta coach Chaye Crimmins said.

“The defensive pressure that we provided was really good and our shooters were accurate as well.”

Wangaratta’s defensive end was on fire with both Grady and Katie Dean named in their side’s best players.

“Katie and Hannah are working fantastic together in the circle, communicating, moving around the

“But on Saturday the pressure outside of the circle from Leah (Jenvey) and Issy was fantastic.

“Leah and Issy are really working hard together to provide that pressure so it was a great defensive game.”

Wangaratta also pulled off wins in the C grade and under 17s, but fell short by three goals in the B grade.

“It was fantastic to get wins in the other netball grades, especially because

they have been so close to a win in the first three games and have been working really hard at training, so it was great to see them get some wins,” Crimmins said.

The ‘Pies A graders remain undefeated with only Corowa-Rutherglen standing in their way at the top of the ladder.

Despite the solid start, Crimmins believes her side still has plenty to improve.

“It’s been a very good start (to the year),” she said.

“I think our improvement

able 14 goals at half-time, the Hawks pegged Raiders back with a 13 goals to nine third quarter.

Wangaratta Rovers followed that up with a 12 goal to seven last quarter but it was Wodonga Raiders who just held on in an exciting finish.

Sami Kreltszheim was outstanding for the home team, shooting 19 goals, while Jenna McLeod was at her consistent best in defence.

For Raiders, Mackensy House and Jo Withers were impressive.

Battered Bulldogs scrape home over Mountain Maids

By NATHAN DE VRIES A HOT and fierce competition on the courts up in Bright came to an end with the Bulldogs up by just two goals, defeating the Mountain Maids 42-40 in front of a massive Easter weekend crowd.

The see-sawing match had it all, from close margins, to skilled play, and even a few surprises - the Bulldogs went into the first break up by a

goal but soon had to alter their lineup due to injury.

“Unfortunately, we lost Sarah Bond in the first couple of minutes in the second quarter, so we had to bring up a couple of the goalies from B grade,” Tarrawingee coach Jackie Everitt said.

“They had to play a couple of extra quarters for us, so we had to use the six quarter rule - thank goodness we had that.

“They were very competitive in both ends and their centre area, they were strong all over the court.

“They gave us a really good run for the money.”

Bright snatched the lead by two goals leading into the half but the Bulldogs responded with an eight goal lead through the third term which Bright worked down to just one heading into the final quarter.

“Last year the same thing happened, it was a draw up there, so Bright made us work very hard for it,” Everitt said.

“We just told them (our players) to control it, control the game, don’t get overwrought - there were momentum shifts and we said once you get possession of it, try and control it but when the adrenaline’s going and you know there’s not

much time left, everyone’s just battling to get that ball back.

“Tig White, she was unbelievable in goalkeeper, she just kept repelling attack after attack.

“She was absolutely amazing, what she could get her hands on and got out of that ring.

“During the course of the game we had another couple of injuries to Kellie Symons

and to Amanda Cassidy, so again there were changes which impacted.

“It was one of those games where you go ‘thank goodness we got the four points’.”

In other Easter round O&K matches, Greta annihilated Moyhu 71-18, Benalla kept their flawless record going with a 45-37 win over Bonnie Doon, and North Wangaratta got home 51-45 against King Valley at Whitfield.

MATCH REVIEWS 4 King Valley Roos power past Hawks in Easter clash ROUND

By NATHAN de VRIES IT was a very happy Easter Saturday out at the Whitfield Recreation Reserve, with King Valley’s senior footy team taking the points over a tenacious North Wangaratta 14.13 (97) to 7.15 (57).

The Roos went into the match with only one win to their name, with an opportunity for building some sustainable momentum the prize for both sides.

The Hawks had the run

through the first quarter, breaking out to an eight point lead by the first break, before King Valley accelerated, booting five goals and taking a 20 point lead by half time.

King Valley’s Beau Wheeler said the first half was a true-blue tug-of-war.

“North Wangaratta played really well, they came out of the blocks early - we didn’t adjust to the conditions and the crowd so to their credit they came out really well,” he said.

“We were on the back foot early, but to my boys’ credit, they steadied and came back at them.

“It was pretty even.

“We were slow out of the blocks, they would’ve kicked the first four and we just adapted and came out and tried to get the game on our terms.

“We played our style and it really proved - it was good to get a little bit of a reward for the way they were playing and have been for the past weeks.”

The Roos were in the box seat moving into the second half, but a revived North Wangaratta proved they weren’t out of the match just yet.

The Hawks limited King Valley to just five minor scores through the third term while closing the margin to 14 points.

“In the third quarter, it was all them,” Wheeler said.

“We came out a bit slow and to North Wangaratta’s credit they came at us and

we just didn’t adapt to that.

“We started slow, then the third quarter we were non-competitive for a fair chunk of the quarter.

“We just let them dictate terms, but I put it on the guys at three-quarter time.”

King Valley rallied, and produced a five-goal term to secure the four points and their second win for the season.

Young gun Thomas Stewart got his name among the goalkickers for the Roos, booting four in a power-

house effort, helped out by Connor Shanley and Sam Evans.

Brandon Fitzpatrick was one of the best on for the defeated Hawks, along with Cooper Matheson and Kevin Clarke.

In other matches, Greta thumped Moyhu by 98 points, Benalla All Blacks took a big win over Bonnie Doon 28.11 (119) to 8.13 (61), and Tarrawingee took advantage of Bright’s errant goalkicking to run home winners by 43 points.

A Good Friday for Greta at Moyhu

GRETA’S form continues to improve with a thumping of Moyhu on Good Friday.

Moyhu hosted the Blues and after a thrilling one point win over Whorouly the previous round, the home side was beaming with confidence.

That confidence was evident early with an even first quarter that saw Moyhu up (3.1.19 to 2.6.18) at the first break but it was Greta who would slam on 20 goals to five in the final three quarters to run away to a 8.5 (53) to 22.19 (151) smashing.

“Moyhu were really hard at the contest all day, Matthew Thrum was good for them in the middle,” Greta coach Greg Newbold said.

“We kicked a bit inaccurately early on and could’ve had a bit more of a lead at quarter time so once we started kicking straight that’s when the game changed.

“I think we had more mature

bodies which was probably the difference in the end.”

Tyler Arrowsmith showed his goal kicking prowess, snagging four majors in a best on ground performance, while Callan Burns also kicked four and Josh Bell pitched in with three.

The Blues are still waiting on Daniel Cassidy to return from a hamstring injury too which will be a handy addition to an already strong forward line.

“Tyler was really competitive and has had a good start to the season,” Newbold said.

“He’s a mobile centre half forward so he needs the ball moving slick ahead of him and he definitely benefited from our good ball use.

“He’s kicked multiple goals two weeks in a row now.

“It’s been good to have multiple options up forward.”

Greta has now won two from four games with their only losses coming to potential top four outfits Milawa (33 points) and Bonnie Doon (55 points).

“I’ve been pretty happy with our start,” Newbold said.

“We were savaged by injury against Bonnie Doon and ended up with no bench.

“In both games we let the other side have bursts of 15 minutes where they’d kick five or six goals in a row and we weren’t able to stem the flow.

“We’ve identified that and have been focusing on ways to halt momentum and early on against Moyhu we were able to do that.”

For Moyhu, Ethan Rooney, Thrum and Xavier Wales all impressed, while Jacob Beattie kick four goals.

MATCH REVIEWS 2 Tall timber up forward dominates improved Wodonga ROUND

By WILLSON MACK THE Wangaratta train is still rolling with a dominant performance against Wodonga at Martin Park on Saturday.

After an even first quarter that saw the ‘Pies lead by seven points at the break, the away team produced a flawless 11 goal to one second term to go into the break 15.3 (93) to 3.2 (20) leaders.

The twin towers in Michael Newton (eight) and Ben Reid (six) combined for 14 goals as their side posted their third successive flogging in a 24.14 (158) to 7.6 (48) victory.

“Wodonga challenged us in the first quarter and some of their ball use was really good,” coach Reid said.

“We tightened up their ball use in the second quarter and really took the game on from there.

“We were finding marks inside 50 and looked really good.”

The ‘Pies second quarter was reminiscent of their first term

against Albury, being too quick, too clean and just too good across the ground.

“It’s hard to say if that was our best quarter for the year,” Reid said.

“Our first quarter against Albury was good too but for us we’re just pleased we’ve got players playing their role.

“No one’s standing out, it’s always good when you’ve got 22 blokes doing their bit.”

Wangaratta midfield veteran Matt Kelly was back to his brilliant best with 29 disposals, six clearances and a goal. “’Bater’ (Kelly) turned the clock back a bit,” Reid said.

“He ran 100 metres down the wing and probably took 10 bounces before knocking one through (goal) from 50 metres out.

“He’s probably had a bit of a slow start to the season because he’s had a bit of a sore knee but he was really good on the weekend.

“It helps having players like Jackson Clarke and Daniel Sharrock in the midfield who can do a lot of the

grunt work which gives Bater a bit of a breather from the heavy lifting.”

Wangaratta dominated the inside 50 count (67-32) and made the most of them kicking 24 majors.

The forward line was on song with Reid the difference early, kicking three of the first six goals, followed by a purple patch from Newton in the second stanza that saw him boot five goals in 14 minutes through a combination of opportunistic efforts and strong grabs.

But for Reid, it was the pressure from his small forwards that impressed him. “’Juice’ (Newton) and I didn’t play a praccy match together and Cal’s (Moore) new up forward so we’re just getting used to playing together but that cohesion is starting to come,” he said.

“I was more happy with the smalls though, their pressure was really good on Saturday.

“Fraser Holland-Dean (nine tackles) and Jessie Smith’s pressure

was good and then we’ve got Joe Richards and Abe Ankers who rest forward and we get good pressure from them as well.”

21-year-old Fraser Ellis kicked one of the goals of the match, stepping past an opponent on the boundary to then boot a checkside from 25 metres out.

Ellis’ miracle goal went with 21 disposals and 11 marks.

“He’s got the talent he just needs to back it up week after week,” Reid said.

“He’s a beautiful kick and his last two weeks have been really good.”

Reid expects Wodonga to push plenty of teams this season.

“They’ve got some good players, (Alex) Smout and (Angus) Baker challenged us and caused some headaches early on,” he said.

“Josh Clayton was good as well so they’ve got a solid midfield that threw us off our game early on.”

Matt Grossman and Abe Ankers were both missing from the Magpies fold highlighting the side’s depth.

Hawks run riot against Raiders WANGARATTA Rovers responded from last weekend’s horror loss to Wangaratta in outstanding fashion on Good Friday.

The Hawks made light work of a COVID affected Wodonga Raiders side as new recruit Tom Boyd kicked five majors, along with Alex Marklew’s four to send their side to a 20.13 (133) to 13.5 (83) win.

The VFL listed Boyd was overlooked by Werribee to play in their clash against Williamstown giving him in opportunity to make the trip to WJ Findlay Oval.

“Tom was impressive,” Wangaratta Rovers football operations manager Barry Sullivan said.

“He played defence as well as forward and managed to kick five goals but the most impressive thing was the way he bought into the team structures and things like that.

“He didn’t try and do too much individually, he’s just a real team player.”

The Hawks rolled with a threepronged attack up forward with Mackenzie Bristow also accompanying Boyd and Marklew in the forward 50.

Bristow was also solid, kicking three majors to go with five marks.

Rovers’ Sam Murray had one of his finest games racking up 36 touches, 16 marks and 171 ranking points.

“He’s in really good physical shape at the moment,” Sullivan said.

“He uses the footy so well and I reckon it’s only a matter of time before he takes mark of the year. “’Crezza’ has been using him off the back flank and he’s had a really good start to the season.”

Although Wangaratta Rovers were beaten in the clearances (1934) significantly, that can only be seen as a positive with gun ruckman Shane Gaston due to return from injury in the next one to two weeks.

“I think we applied pressure all over the ground which helped our lack of clearances,” Sullivan said.

“Not having Gaston makes it hard, he had a really good game against Myrtleford and then was a late out against Wangaratta and he wasn’t quite ready this weekend.

“Hopefully we’ll have him back next week.”

Pigeons set to honour ANZACs

HOMING pigeons are set to compete in a 180 kilometre race to Wangaratta this ANZAC day, as local enthusiasts commemorate and celebrate the role the Australian Carrier Pigeon Service played in World War II. The second iteration of the Wangaratta Homing Pigeon Club’s ANZAC Day race will see the birds liberated from Grong Grong, NSW to race towards lofts in Wangaratta, in an effort to recognise the transformative role the pigeons played in Australian battles in New Guinea and the Western Pacific 80 years ago.

Up to 30 birds are expected to compete in Monday’s race, with conditions set to dictate a liberation time around 10am.

THE Jason Whybrow/Nicole Lummas greyhound training partnership has cleaned up at the National Coursing Association’s awards.

The pair took out three different awards, trainer of the year, greyhound of the year (Sambar Chief), and syndicate of the year (Friday Froffies), while also finishing second in the bitch of the year with St Mary’s Panda.

The trainers made history in June last year when they won the two main features of day at Benalla when littermates St Mary’s Panda and Sambar Chief took out the Oaks and Derby respectively.

WANGARATTA’S running sensation has continued her outstanding form with a victory in the Lorraine Donnan Women’s Handicap 400 metre final at the prestigious Stawell Gift Carnival.

Sixteen-year-old Bella Pasquali was the backmarker running off 20 metres in the event, clocking a time of 55.28 seconds in the final, taking home the sash ahead of Meg Deane (55.55 secs).

The sensational victory comes just two weeks after taking out the under 17 400 metre final at the Australian Track and Field Championships.

Pasquali finished first in the gift heat with a time of 55 seconds.

“I’m just really excited and happy,” Pasquali said.

“It’s a great way to end the season.

“I wasn’t expecting anything this weekend, I just wanted to go there and have a good time.”

After taking out the under 17s 400 metre final at the national championships, Pasquali admitted she was feeling a little under pressure.

“There’s always going to

be pressure at these sorts of races,” she said.

“Winning any race at Stawell is pretty hard so I just kept telling myself to just go and have fun.

“I’ve raced in open women’s before, I did it last season so I knew it’s always going to be challenging, especially with the handicaps system in every race.”

track, Pasquali’s racing moved to the grass at Stawell and after rain on Sunday night prior to the finals on Monday, the track wasn’t in ideal condition for all of the runners.

But the Galen student didn’t have any trouble adjusting to the conditions.

“We had rain all last night (Sunday) so the track wasn’t in ideal condition, it was really soggy and wet,” she said.

“Considering that I’m

really happy with how I went.

“I’m lucky that I train on grass so moving from a rubber track to the grass was pretty normal for me.

“State and national championships are the only times I run on the rubber so I find it just as easy running on the grass.”

And what’s next for Pasquali?

“I’m just going to enjoy a nice off-season,” she said.
