50-metre pool reopens today THE heated outdoor 50-metre pool at Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre (WSAC) reopens from today, giving swimmers a chance to prepare for upcoming swim meets, stay fit or just enjoy recreational activities at the facility. Opening times include 5.45am-8.30am and 4pm7pm, Monday to Friday (outdoor pool closed on upcoming public holidays). Meanwhile, WSAC has a new sports, aquatic and events precinct manger, Sonya Dalgliesh, who spent time leading the Echuca Aquatics and Leisure facility and also the Aquamoves in Shepparton. Sarah Brindley, director corporate and leisure, said the Rural City of Wangaratta is thrilled to announce Sonya Dalgliesh has commenced as manager of the Wangaratta Sports, Aquatics and
Events Precinct. “Sonya brings a wealth of experience with her at an important time in the growth of the sports and aquatic centre with expansion works underway, the stunning 50m outdoor pool re-opening for this season and more exciting events to come,” Ms Brindley said. “We have one of the very best regional facilities and we look forward to growing the service to its full potential as a vibrant community centre under Sonya’s leadership. “On behalf of council and the whole WSAC team we welcome Sonya on-board in her new role. “We also thank Penny Hargrave for all her energy and commitment during her time in the role and look forward to welcoming her back to her existing role as manager arts, culture and events. ‘’
Crime 10-year low WANGARATTA has recorded it lowest number of criminal offences in the last decade, according to Crime Statistics Agency data released yesterday. But despite the number of criminal offences in Wangaratta dropping dramatically on the previous year by 27.1 per cent, the total number of incidents was slightly up by 0.3 per cent. reports the number of assault related offences declined 226, as did property damage reports (-123). However, thefts (other) were on the rise in the 2021/22 financial year, with an increase of 168 and 132 extra breach bail conditions as well. Wangaratta also had the third lowest number of criminal incidents in the last decade, almost
equalling last year’s figure (+0.3 per cent). It was the third lowest year recorded since 2013 (1573 incidents) with 2021 figures (1628 incidents) second, five less than 2022 (1633 incidents). In 2022 the incident rate was 5451.3, with 2269 offences recorded including 959 alleged offenders, 793 person victim reports and 618 family incidents until June 2022.
This compares to 2021 incident rate of 5474.1, 3114 offences, 1028 alleged offender incidents, 775 person victim reports, and 634 family incidents. A majority of incidents occurred in Wangaratta with 1382 more recorded in 2022, there were 40 more incidents in Glenrowan, 21 in North Wangaratta, 18 in Springhurst and 21 fewer in Wangaratta South. There were 172 fewer
criminal damage incidents in 2022, and 155 less breach family violence order. This is a turnaround from 2021 statistics, which had a rise in criminal damage incidents by 179 and breach family violence order by 196. Other crimes on the rise in 2022 included other theft (+130), breach bail conditions (+83), and sexual offences (+71). ■ Continued page 2
