Council, Indigenous partners to hold ceremony on Jan 26 to reflect on our history

A REFLECTIVE ceremony, “Wonga dang-a-latj”, will take place in Wangaratta on Australia Day morning to continue the community’s vision in walking side-byside to reconciliation. The Rural City of Wangaratta, in partnership with the Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation and Traditional Owners, are supporting the Wonga dang-alatj event to be held from 7am

to 8.30am at Merriwa Park. It will feature traditional Bangerang dancers, a smoking ceremony, Welcome to Country from Traditional Owner Uncle Dozer Atkinson and the sharing of culture and stories. The event will conclude

at 8.30am and attendees will be encouraged to attend the Australia Day awards ceremony in King George V Gardens to acknowledge Citizen of the Year, Young

Citizen of the Year and Event/Project of the Year award winners, commencing at 9am until 12 noon. Uncle Dozer said true reconciliation comes from

really acknowledging the past and committing to walk together into the future. “We are pleased to work with council and Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation, sharing our knowledge and continuing to overcome challenges for the benefit of the wider community,” Uncle Dozer said. “This is an event that definitely strives towards

reconciliation and what’s taken place in the recent past does not define us as a community. “I must say that we at Mungabareena Aboriginal Corporation are on a journey with the community to break down any barriers that may exist. ■ Continued page 2 ■ Australia Day events in rural communities - page 2
