City bid for Games Mayor y meets with cityy heads to look at hosting g scope p for Commonwealth Games

WANGARATTA is hoping to be part of a regional Victorian bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games with road cycling and water polo potential events the city could attract and accommodate. City mayor Dean Rees met online with Regional Cities Victoria yesterday and nine other councils to discuss the scope of the 10 municipalities

being a part of the State Government’s bid to use regional Victorian locations to stage the Games. Wangaratta’s new $18 million aquatics facilities could

offer an option for water polo to be staged locally and the cycling routes in the King Valley, Beechworth and Alpine areas could also bode well for road cycling events. If Wangaratta was successful in being a host of an event in the Commonwealth Games Cr Rees believes it could mean significant financial injection into the local

economy with infrastructure and tourism, while showcasing the region to the world. “The FINA approved 50-metre Olympic pool for water polo, complete with boom, and swimming at the Wangaratta Sports and Aquatic Centre is the best in the state and the supporting training facilities would cater well for a large scale

event,” Cr Rees said. “We’ve got great training facilities - whether it’s the indoor 25m pool, or the hydrotherapy pool - and if we get a Games event or as a training venue prior to the Games, this is all great for Wangaratta.” Cr Rees said road cycling is a big event council should try and push for with the road network through the

King Valley, Indigo and Alpine shires as well. “To bring athletes to the area it would showcase what we’ve got to the rest of the world through television that this is a place called Wangaratta, it’s only 2.5 hours from Melbourne with great countryside areas that have infrastructure,” he said. ■ Continued page 2
