‘Dangerous’ act A MELBOURNE man accused of attempting to hit a group of children with his car while he allegedly did burnouts through the centre of Apex Park in Wangaratta last week will remain in police custody for the foreseeable future. The 45-year-old appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court in police custody on Monday, attempting to secure bail after he and a 57-year-old co-accused allegedly drove

Second hoon alleged g to have tried to hit children with carr

erratically around the popular park around 7pm last Thursday. The co-accused man, who had ties to Wangaratta, was formally refused bail on Friday, after he allegedly ran over a teen’s bike at the Frank Garth Reserve, before doing a series of small burnouts in the unregistered vehicle and parking at the park’s rotunda.

On Monday, Leading Senior Constable Colin Boyle said both men had set off from Reservoir in Melbourne’s north on Thursday morning, allegedly stealing number plates from a local vehicle and attaching them to the accused’s Nissan Navara. The pair were said to have travelled up the Hume Freeway, stopping to allegedly steal 11 litres

of petrol from a Benalla service station before arriving in Wangaratta between 6.30 and 7pm, where they continued drinking and listening to loud music inside the Apex Park rotunda. LSC Boyle said the coaccused had been chased by a large group of teens after allegedly running over a bike which had been rested on the river foreshore, with

the teens then verbally abusing the pair at the rotunda. The accused was then alleged to have driven at speeds of up to 50kph throughout the park, passing within five metres of the teens before rolling the vehicle while doing burnouts. The vehicle was also said to have dragged up significant dust, which the

accused allegedly drove blindly back through. LSC Boyle said significant pedestrian traffic in the area had meant the incident had been heavily photographed, and a number of videos had been viewed by police. “The circumstances of this driving on its own is conduct endangering serious injury in its basic,” he said. “The circumstances are highly dangerous.” ■ Continued page 2
