larger vehicles having also found it difficult to turn into side streets around the structures.

The bollards were introduced to increase the safety for cyclists using bike lanes along the thoroughfare earlier this year.

Steve Bowmaker, regional director (Hume),

Department of Transport, said adjustments will allow for a larger turning circle.

“An inspection of the safer cycling project on Phillipson Street has been conducted and found that additional improvements can be made to further improve safety,” Mr Bowmaker said.

“We are working with Rural City of Wangaratta to make some adjustments to the locations of the bollards at the entrances and exits of side streets to allow for a larger turning circle.”

City mayor Dean Rees said VicRoads is looking to potentially install small reflective lights on the

ground and corners that could alleviate the ugly aesthetics and make it easier to turn corners rather than having bollards.

“VicRoads are still working on a design brief and an outcome for our residents and other road users,” he said.

Flood overlay follow up FOLLOWING the flood overlay story published on page 1 and continued on page 2 of the Wangaratta Chronicle on Monday, Wangaratta council contacted the Chronicle concerned the caption under the image of the map may have misled some readers.

The caption read: REDUCED RISK: Properties along the One Mile Creek in Wangaratta have been removed from the list of land subject to flooding and inundation.

The map published only showed where the old overlay had been ‘deleted’ along One Mile Creek as part of the regulatory process determined by DELWP. The caption did not, however, explain that a new amended overlay was also added to the map area, although that was made clear in the article itself.

This may have led some people to believe that their properties are no longer at risk from flooding or inundation, which is incorrect.

People wishing to search online to see if their property is affected by the amended flood and inundation overlays can access council’s online mapping system ‘Pozi’ which has a function to search an address.

Funding boost for Chrismont and King Valley cycle tourism

TOURISM EXPANSION: Jo and Arnie Pizzini say the significant grant for Ride Chrismont is a vote of confidence in their ongoing initiatives to help grow tourism in the King Valley.

A PROJECT designed to encourage more cycle tourism in the King Valley by offering state of the art facilities to accommodate visitors on two wheels has received a funding boost from the State Government.

Ride Chrismont will receive a $300,000 grant from the second round of the Ride High Country Fund to support the installation of luxury self-contained LumiPod accommodation and cyclistsavvy facilities at Chrismont Wines in Cheshunt.

It is one of 13 businesses to receive a share of the $3.1m regional partnerships initiative; the project aimed at maximising the emerging growth market for gravel riding in the King Valley, following the launch of the region’s ‘King GRAValley’ event.

Chrismont’s Arnie and Jo Pizzini say receiving such significant support is a huge vote of confidence in their ongoing initiatives to help grow King Valley’s tourism economy.

“Ride Chrismont is about blending luxury with nature and it’s an exciting and diverse expansion of our cellar door and restaurant offering, that since its inception in 2015, has seen visitation to Chrismont exceed far beyond our expectations,” said Arnie Pizzini.

The LumiPod is a prefabricated cabin with curved glass walls that open up to nature and it will be sited on the upper terrain of Chris-

mont’s Cheshunt estate, where they say it will have undisturbed views of the surrounding Black Ranges, Power’s Lookout and the valley below.

It will also offer a rentable e-bike fleet, onsite cycle service centre and storage facilities, with Chrismont to offer restaurant-prepared portable food or cycle picnics, and concierge-inspired guidance from staff on King Valley’s cycling tracks and pedal-accessible tourism hotspots.

The business said they expect it to launch in early 2023, anticipating it will bring 1000-plus bed nights to the region each year and an estimated $1.5m annual uplift to the local economy.

Mr Pizzini said the project is about growing tourism, and more importantly, cycle tourism for Chrismont and the King Valley.

He said Ride Chrismont will also create new jobs and opportunities for individuals and families looking to live and work in the area.

“It’s not just for the dedicated gravel, road climbs and mountain trail cycle enthusiasts; it’s for residential visitors and non-residential travellers as well who are looking to pedal and picnic along King Valley’s relaxed roads and trails,” he said.

“We are equally excited in knowing that we can expand on the already loyal and hard-working team we have here at Chrismont.”

Bollard changes are coming ■

Other bollards near Edwards Street have been removed to ensure residents

can continue to safely reverse out of their driveways.

A section of bollards was also removed by a local resident near Sadler Street and police dropped them off to council.

The works were delivered under the Australian and Victorian Governments’ Road Safety Program (RSP) to support lifesaving road safety treatments on rural and regional roads across Victoria.

Council’s cash hit Increase cost of materials and labour blamed for extra $1.8m spend

By STEVE KELLY COUNCILLORS have unanimously approved an extra $1.8 million spend on a Glenrowan tourist centre that will tell the story of the Kelly Gang and the 1880 siege in the historic town.

Some $444,771 was spent on the design of the Glenrowan Cultural Interpretive Centre, the building aspect will now cost $4,774,350, and a further $200,000 will be spent on the audio-visual/multimedia production elements.

Council’s outlay will now be $2.3m instead of an initial $500,000 and the reasons for the blowout have been attributed to an escalating cost of labour and materials due to COVID-19.

The State Government also funded $3.5m towards the project and council would have had to return the money if they decided not to proceed with the centre.

But while strong reservations were expressed about the extra spend at this week’s council meet-

ing, all seven councillors voted to give the works the green light for the betterment of the township.

South ward councillor Irene Grant has long been advocating for improvements to Glenrowan, even during her first stint on council in the early 2000s.

“This is a difficult decision for council to make because I think we are in a position that should we say no to the development we are then obliged to return the stimulus money which I think would not be a good look for council,” she said.

“Glenrowan has been waiting a very long time for some significant investment.

“There has been some investment over a period of time but this is a major push towards tourism in the township and I think to say no at this particular point I think that sometime in the future we would regret that decision.”

Cr Grant visited Glenrowan last week to meet with several businesses and she said people

in the town were looking forward to seeing the centre built.

“They’ve been waiting for a very long time and now is the time to deliver this interpretive centre,” she said.

Cr Jack Herry expressed his reservations about the extra spend which would further tighten council’s room to move financially over the next decade.

“There’s not a great deal of head room over the next five years in the long-term financial plan and we’re whittling away our head room in the subsequent five years, the second half of the decade,” he said.

“It’s a significant increase in our contribution from $500,000 to (an extra) $1.8 million.”

Cr Harry Bussell highlighted the positives of the centre and said it could also double as a visitor information centre particularly for people visiting from the south and it has the ability to promote the region’s offerings in the tourist space.

Cr Harvey Benton said “we

might not get another lick of the ice-cream” if council was to hand back the $3.5m that the State Government had injected into the project.

The centre will allow visitors to immerse themselves in history by using an exciting mix of museum artefacts, high-tech experiential displays, contemplation spaces, educational programs and research resources.

Visitors will explore this iconic story through displays that bring the story to life, demonstrate the heritage of the area, and provide a real sense of the times (mid-late 1800s).

Midson Construction Pty Ltd was awarded the contract to construct the centre which was designed by Content Studio Pty Ltd, the same creators of the Cook Cottage exhibition and the National Museum of Australia in Melbourne.

The tender for the audiovisual multimedia production component will be tendered in February 2022.

A WANGARATTA man who punched several co-workers to the head at a Wangaratta meat and livestock business will remain in prison until at least the new year.

The 38-year-old faced Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court yesterday, pleading guilty to one count of recklessly cause injury and two counts of unlawful assault following a September 2 attack on three co-workers.

Appearing via webex from Ravenhall Prison, the defendant expressed remorse for the assault, and pledged to remedy his behaviour upon his release.

Defence counsel Geoff Clancy told the court his client was a diagnosed schizophrenic who had struggled to receive necessary supports while in custody, a prospect which troubled Magistrate Ian Watkins after he was informed a Court Integrated Services Program (CISP) could not be developed for the accused.

“What troubles me is you seem to have been in a revolving door in and out of prison in recent years,” he told the defendant.

“It worries me that I’m going to see you back in court - give yourself the best chance.”

Magistrate Watkins convicted and sentenced the defendant to a five month term of imprisonment, with considerations to be made for time spent in prison quarantine.

Tatong driver charged with Wangaratta man’s death A TATONG man has been charged with the death of an 80-year-old Wangaratta man and the serious injury of a 70-year-old Wangaratta man, following a collision near Goorambat.

The 35-year-old faced Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, when he was bailed on charges of dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing serious injury, in the wake of the Tuesday afternoon incident.

Emergency services responded to the scene at the Goorambat-Thoona Road intersection Bungeet and Hammond roads shortly after midday, after a white Toyota utility collided with two motorcycles.

The 80-year-old man passed away at the scene, while his riding partner was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The fatality takes the state’s road toll to 224 road deaths this year, compared to 203 in 2020.

WANGARATTA High School is proud of the achievements of their students this year, in light of the difficulties they have faced over the past two years.

Dux for 2021 and head prefect, Ulrika Wild, showed that dedication to studies and hard work pays off as she heads into 2022 after receiving an outstanding ATAR result of 99.7.

Ulrika managed to combine her study with extra curricula commitments at school, including maintaining her participation with the school band program.

Next year, Ulrika will be heading to Canberra to start her Medicine Degree at ANU.

Overall, the school had five students receive ATAR results above 90, adding to the 34 per cent of the cohort who received an ATAR greater than 70.

There were three students awarded their VCE Baccalaureate for excellent results in senior mathematics, a language study and at least 30 or above for their English subject.

The school is also proud of their graduating VCAL students of whom 11 received their senior certificate and three achieved their intermediate.

In total, 58 students successfully completed their VCE studies in 2021, and a further 14 students received their VCAL certificates, a greater than 90 per cent success rate.

Galen dux has sights set on arts, languages

By STEVE KELLY THE wait was over for all Wangaratta VCE students when they received their Australian Tertiary Admission Rankings (ATAR) from early yesterday morning.

In what has been a challenging year many students with remote learning intermittently in place, many excelled.

Galen Catholic College dux was Archie Gemmill with an ATAR of 97.65, placing him in the top three per cent of students in the state.

“It’s been a good year but there’s always that wait while exams are getting marked and you just have no clue what’s happening,” Archie said.

“You sort of forget whether you went well or not and it’s such a relief on the morning.”

Archie was checking his email before the expected ATAR release time and lucky he did as

he got his long awaited result at 6.45am.

“I got the email and I was really shocked because since year 7 I’ve been hearing these crazy, big numbers and it’s almost mythical,” he said.

The myth has become a reality for Archie and he wants to get into a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Melbourne where he will also keep up the Italian language which he has studied right through his school years.

He said 2021 year 12 students were able to continue with remote learning well after getting a taste of it in 2020.

“It wasn’t as much as a shock as we had already done it in year 11 when it wasn’t as impactful on our final grade, but of course it was naturally challenging,” he said.

Archie did ancient history, classical studies, global politics, literature and Italian, along

with revolutions history last year while in year 11.

Galen’s Erin Chadban scored an ATAR of 97.5, also in the top three per cent in Victoria.

Four Galen students achieved ATARs of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10 per cent in the state.

Some 16 students achieve study scores over 40 in individual subjects, placing them in the top eight per cent statewide in those subjects.

Galen Principal, Bernard Neal, said the staff and Galen community are immensely proud of the efforts of the 2021 cohort.

“This group faced challenges that no other year 12 group has ever faced with not one school term in 2020 or 2021 running its full length with onsite classes,” he said.

“They adapted to these unique circumstances and made it through the year with courage and persistence.”

CHLOE Royal took out Cathedral College’s highest ATAR of 99.35 with results being made available to VCE students yesterday.

Chloe demonstrated an exceptional understanding of the content she studied and achieved study scores over 40 in five of her subjects.

She has applied to study a Bachelor of Commerce/ Science at Monash University.

Joy Fan also achieved outstanding academic success with an ATAR of 97.75 and has applied to study a Bachelor of Science Advanced/Global Challenges at Monash University.

Cassidy Mailer achieved an ATAR of 94.90 and she has applied to study a Bachelor of Science at The University of Melbourne.

Joining Chloe, Joy and Cassidy were six other students who achieved an ATAR of 90 or above.

Of the students who recorded an ATAR, half achieved a score of above 70.

“We would also like to recognise those who accomplished the 18 study scores of 40 or above, which places those students in the top 8 per cent of the state these are excellent results.

Cathedral College director of development Kellie Cairncross said the school is delighted to congratulate all of their year 12 students on their VCE results.

“This cohort faced many challenges while completing the two years of their VCE and they demonstrated incredible resilience and determination,” she said.

“We proudly acknowledge their efforts and achievements through the final stage of their journey of secondary education.”

Change needs to happen Haines welcomes Jenkins report, calls on government to implement all recommendations urgently

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE LOCAL groups are hoping for significant change following the release of the Jenkins Report; a review into Commonwealth Parliamentary Workplaces by Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins.

Independent federal member for Indi Helen Haines has welcomed the release of the report and called on the government to implement all 28 recommendations without delay.

The review by Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins was sparked by former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins going public with her experiences inside Parliament House and widespread calls for change in parliamentary workplace culture.

The review found just over half of people in Commonwealth Parliamentary workplaces had experienced bullying, sexual harassment or attempted or actual sexual assault at work.

Women experienced sexual harassment and bullying at higher rates than men, according to the report.

“The statistics and personal experiences in this report are shocking, but unfortunately for many in the building they won’t be surprised to read these things, they know them to be true,” Dr Haines said.

Dr Haines said the report’s focus on culture and leadership, as well as structural and systemic changes, was important to create longlasting change.

inclusion; performance; accountability and safety and wellbeing are the building blocks to ensure parliamentary workplaces are safe places for everyone to come to work,” she said.

“Ever since I have come to Parliament I have argued for

a code of conduct for parliamentarians and their staff and the inclusion of a code of conduct, as well as an Independent Parliamentary Standards Commission are vital to improve standards in this place.

“I am pleased to see this

review recommend a code of conduct and I call on the government to support that recommendation in particular.”

Women’s Health Goulburn North East chief executive officer Amanda Kelly said she also fully supports the implementation of all 28 recommendations.

“The findings show a systemic issue with gender inequality within our parliament,” she said.

“We need those tasked with leading our country to be true leaders on all levels and the Jenkins Report shows us the way forward.

“I’m angry and saddened that we had to have this review at all, but this roadmap for structural and cultural change once implemented and embraced, will go a long way towards the change we

so clearly need.”

Centre Against Violence chief executive officer Jaime Chubb said she hopes the review will start significant change.

“While the Jenkins Review looks specifically at parliament, we know that there are many workplaces that have the same deep issues that allow and even encourage this behaviour to occur,” she said.

“It is evident that gender equity is not just about giving women a seat at the table; safety, respect and kindness should be a foundation of every workplace.

“The review shows how profoundly these things can be missing from parliament.

“Hopefully the review starts significant change; the country will certainly be watching.”

Reid Street store fetches $2.3 million

THE first Wangaratta CBD auction held for some years was conducted on Tuesday afternoon, as Reid Street’s Provincial Home Living store went under the hammer.

Purchased by a Melbourne investor for $2,340,000, the price

was a slightly stronger result than that expected by agents Garry Nash & Co, with four bidders vying for the property.

The Provincial business has an ongoing lease with the site, with options through to 2036.

Garry Nash & Co director Mike Noble said there was strong interest from the local area and from Melbourne during the campaign, in which the property was described as a ‘regional trophy investment’.

“It was great to hear feedback

from Melbourne investors who inspected Provincial about how vibrant they thought our CBD was,” he said.

“This contributed to the confidence of these investors in our regional city.”

WANGARATTA High School’s new executive principal will move from leading Port Vila International School in Vanuatu to take on the local role.

While international travel restrictions due to COVID-19, together with the logistics of relocating his family from Vanuatu to Victoria, mean David Armstrong will not start at the high school until March 15 next year, he will bring a wealth of leadership experience to the position when he arrives.

David has worked across a broad range of education systems and school settings, and prior to his time in Vanuatu, held leadership positions in schools within NSW and the Northern Territory.

Until his arrival in Wangaratta, current acting principal Michelle Bootes will continue in the role for the first six weeks of term one, 2022.

Improving digital skills for local telehealth EXPERT trained volunteers are ready, and consumer participants needed for the free iManage My Health project at the Wangaratta Digital Hub. In partnership with Northeast Health Wangaratta, program volunteers have been trained to assist people needing to improve their digital skills to take part in telehealth or virtual care.

With one-on-one support, people can learn a range of skills at their own pace.

This includes preparing for a video consultation and what to do with a video link; demonstrations of digital clinical devices to monitor health conditions that store readings on smartphones; along with general assistance with computers, smartphones and apps used to deliver health care.

Volunteers understand many people are not familiar with using digital technology, so a number of visits to the hub, located to the left of the Wangaratta Library entrance, may be needed.

Rodeo bucked after tenancy issues THE Wangaratta Rodeo will not run in 2021, after an agreement could not be reached between event organisers and a building tenant at the Wangaratta Showgrounds.

The rodeo was expected to take place on January 7, but will now be cancelled a matter of weeks ahead of the event.

According to Rural City of Wangaratta mayor Dean Rees, the outcome was disappointing for all involved.

“Councillors and council officers have held several meetings with all parties and offered solutions to facilitate the needs of the rodeo event at the grounds with no financial impact to the event organisers,” he told the Wangaratta Chronicle.

“Use of this building by the tenant does not include the grounds itself which were, and still are, available for the rodeo organisers to proceed with their event if they wish.”

According to Cr Rees, the event’s cancellation was an unfortunate outcome for a community which had continually missed out over a difficult two year period.

“In the end, it was the rodeo event organiser’s decision alone to cancel the event, with council officers still willing to work with the event organisers to make the event happen.”

The Wangaratta Chronicle contacted event organisers, but at the time of going to print, had not received a response.

Designs for two rail towns set for early 2022 Glenrowan and Wangaratta Inland Rail plans heading to next level A $16.4 million contract has been awarded to McConnell Dowell to design Inland Rail works including new infrastructure at Wangaratta and Glenrowan.

The contract includes design and preparatory works at four sites on the existing North East Rail Line to enable Inland Rail doublestacked freight trains to run between Beveridge and Albury.

McConnell Dowell will conduct site investigations to inform the preliminary and detailed designs for utilities, signalling, track slews and the update of rail structures at the two locations, as well as Barnawartha North and Seymour.

The Glenrowan plans are further advanced than Wangaratta, with a widespan

The early concept design for Wangaratta showed an underground pedestrian access way at the train station and the lowering of tracks at the Green Street bridge.

It’s believed consultation on changes at Wangaratta are ongoing and first phase design works will not be carried out until these progress further.

Works are scheduled to start mid-next year, after all planning approvals have been received.

The first phase design of a widespace bridge at Glenrowan will be carried out by McConnell Dowell. chief executive Rebecca Pickering said they selected McConnell Dowell based on their experience delivering major projects including multi-million dollar rail, bridges, railway stations and roads both in Australia and New Zealand, and globally.

“McConnell Dowell and their main design subcontractor Aurecon will now oversee the detailed design of new bridges, train station modifications and track lowering at these initial sites in Victoria, while we await planning, heritage and en-

vironmental approvals,” she said.

“They will also be undertaking early delivery activities to get ready for construction, which includes minor civil works, overhead wiring and signal gantry installation for the sites.

“ARTC remains committed to meaningful and respectful consultation with the communities in North East Victoria as we continue through this phase of early delivery activities.

“McConnell Dowell will now begin progressing de-

tailed design for these sites in early 2022, which will include further consultation

by ARTC with the community and stakeholders for the tranche one sites.

“ARTC will also continue to work through the heritage permit approval process for Glenrowan, before the community has the opportunity to make a submission through a consultation process conducted by Heritage Victoria.”

“As we complete the designs and prepare for construction, we’ll be looking for every opportunity to involve local people and businesses in the project, to maximise the economic and social benefits for communities along the route,” she said.

In Victoria, the project is expected to support hundreds of jobs, and provide an $8 billion boost in Gross State Product from construction and direct operation of the rail line.

Centre cost rise needs to be shared THERE have been countless costs to our community as we‘ve sought to navigate the COVID–19 pandemic over the past 20 months, and now we have an extra financial burden to bear.

Rural City of Wangaratta councillors‘ decision this week to approve an extra $1.8 million spend on a Glenrowan tourist centre to cover blow–out labour and material costs due to the pandemic was one of the toughest they‘ve had to make, as not to put the project in jeopardy.

It‘s been almost 20 years since such a centre, to help tell the story of the Kelly Gang and further help maximise Glenrowan‘s tourism potential, was first proposed, and to put the brakes on now may have halted momentum to ever get it back up again.

Of course the financial burden – taking council‘s spend from $500,000 up to $2.3m – is a heavy price to pay for ratepayers.

But why should it be ours alone?

The State Government has seen fit to back this project with significant funds and we would ask why shouldn‘t it be prepared to share in the extra burden as well?

We would equally call on the Federal Government to find some cash in its coffers to help out.

Both state and federal governments have in the past spoken about the importance of Glenrowan to the Kelly story – history which belongs to our nation.

The facilities to be built will seek to serve our national interests, not ours alone, and we would ask political parties of all persuasions – in light of upcoming state and federal elections – to again look at the coffers for some more support.

Sheep trail brought joy to families ONCE again I would like to say another thankyou, this time, it is to all involved with organising the Nativity Sheep Trail for children.

Anne Turnbull, of The Uniting Church, was responsible for this event that had children excitedly looking for 10 handknitted sheep (thank you knitters) hidden in 10 local shops (thank you shopowners).

At each venue, children were given a small magnetic picture that once they had located the 10 sheep meant they each had a full nativity set to put on the fridge.

There was also the story of the first Christmas and a colouring sheet.

Our granddaughters loved this event, as did I. I am sure many shop owners were also happy to see so many smiling children over the time it was held.

I was very glad that children had the opportunity to have the true meaning of Christmas through this sheep trail exploration.

This is not an impossible situation to reverse, but we need to do something. We can’t sit on the side lines and hope it fixes itself.

Rather, we all need to play our part in building healthy relationships.

We can help break these stories of loneliness that are gripping our nation and bring a hope and a future for a better tomorrow.

13 punch assault accused remanded A WANGARATTA man who launched a violent attack on a pair of elderly neighbours will remain incarcerated until at least February 28, after he was remanded in custody on Monday.

Facing Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court earlier this week, the accused, 39, pleaded guilty to a serious assault which left a 63-yearold male neighbour with severe facial fractures and a broken jaw, and the victim’s wife with severe emotional trauma.

Appearing from Port Phillip Prison, the accused sat quietly as police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Stuart Pritchard told the court of the attack, which occurred while the victim gardened at the front of his Docker Street unit.

LSC Pritchard alleged the accused, who resided in a unit at the same premises, had launched the attack on the victim, after the accused’s mother had said neighbours had been spreading rumours the ac-

cused was a paedophile.

He alleged the accused punched the victim to the head a total of 13 times, while also hitting the victim’s wife as she tried to remove her husband’s assailant.

According to LSC Pritchard, the attack lasted a total of 25 seconds, and had been captured in its entirety on CCTV cameras, while the accused used so much force he was treated for a dislocated left shoulder while under police supervision.

In a police record of in-

terview, the accused admitted the assault, but said the victim had continually baited a personal safety intervention order issued late last year.

LSC Pritchard said the accused showed little remorse in continually blaming the victim of the attack, and said the attack could have been much worse, considering the gardening equipment being utilised by the victim at the time.

Victim impact statements were read aloud in court,

which told of the pair’s mental anguish as a result of the attack, which allegedly saw both suffer from flashbacks in the wake of the attack.

Defence counsel Geoff Clancy said his client had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and had not received vital medication at the time of the attack.

He said attempts had been made to move the accused from the premises ahead of the attack, as a result of the icy relationship between neighbours.

“I’m not victim blaming but this is a relationship between neighbours which had been on edge for some time,” he told the court.

“People had been concerned about what could happen and what eventually did happen.

“Unfortunately it came to a head the way it did.”

The accused was remanded in custody and is set to return to court on February 28, when a forensicare psychological pre-sentence report is expected to be lodged.

Cakes, puddings popular at CWA festive fair LOCAL CWA branches are delighted by the success of their inaugural Festive Fair, held at the CWA Hall in Templeton Street on Sunday.

Around 280 people attended the event, drawn by the temptation of traditional, homemade Christmas treats, the best-selling items included cakes, plum puddings, shortbread and rumballs.

The fair featured items made and brought together by the King Valley, Moyhu, Wangaratta and Whorouly branches, with the North Eastern Group also having an individual stall.

“Our much loved CWA cooking books were again very popular and the Red Tractor Designs pure linen tea towels were snaffled up for Christmas gifts.

“On behalf of the group and branches, we say a big thank you to everyone who came to our fair - we truly appreciate your support and we wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy and safe festive season.”

VCE class of 2021 learn final rank score

VICTORIA’S year 12 students have learned their final score after spending much of their final two years of study in lockdown.

More than 45,000 year 12s, as well as any year 11s who completed a Unit 3/4 subject, got their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) at 7am on Thursday.

The ATAR measures a student’s overall academic achievement compared with

other final-year students in Australia, with the highest possible score a 99.95.

Some 39 Victorian students - 29 male and 11 female - achieved the top score.

Three of those girls studied at Methodist Ladies’ College at Kew in Melbourne’s east.

The average ATAR across all students in the state was 69.26 with an average of 70.6 for female students and

67.62 for males.

Tamara Barth, the interim director of the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre, which processes the scores, congratulated all students on their determination in completing VCE over 2020 and 2021 during a time of remote learning and lockdowns.

“All students who were able to complete their secondary schooling in 2021 should be proud of what they

have achieved, and confident of their ability to successfully navigate their next steps,” she said in a statement.

In all, 50,723 students will graduate with their VCE - a completion rate of 98 per cent of students - and another 14,066 will receive their Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning.

Every student completing one or more VCE or VET Unit 3/4 subjects was given special

consideration towards their ATAR, given the disruption to the 2021 school year.

Education Minister James Merlino reminded students their marks do not define them, noting there are other pathways to achieve their goals no matter how challenging their final two years have been.

Treasurer predicts smaller budget deficit TREASURER Josh Frydenberg is forecasting a slightly smaller budget deficit for the 2021/22 financial year, while predicting strong growth and a sharp fall in the unemployment rate.

He is also predicting in his midyear budget review wages growth of three per cent in 2023/24, a rate not since the coalition came to power in 2013.

The budget deficit for 2021/22 is now forecast at $99.2 billion in

2021/22 in the mid-year economic and fiscal outlook compared to the $106.6 billion prediction made in the May budget.

“The MYEFO shows an improvement in the fiscal outlook since the 2021/22 budget, even accounting for the impacts of the Delta imposed lockdowns,” the treasurer and Finance Minister Simon Birmingham said in a joint statement on Thursday.

Economic growth is forecast at

3.75 per cent for 2021/22, a downgrade from a previous estimate of 4.25 per cent, but is now expected to grow by 3.5 per cent in 2022/23 rather than by 2.5 per cent.

For the calendar year, growth is seen at 4.5 per cent in 2021 and 4.25 per cent in 2022.

“Consistent with the strong economic recovery, the unemployment rate is forecast to reach 4.25 per cent in the June quarter of 2023,” they said.

Ex-senior cop used rank to get information A FORMER Victoria Police superintendent used his position to obtain information about police investigations into sexual assault allegations for his own personal interest, the corruption watchdog has found.

In a report tabled in parliament on Thursday, Victoria’s Independent Broad-Based AntiCorruption Commission found Paul Rosenblum used his “rank and seniority to elicit information from fellow officers”.

IBAC found he helped draft a letter to be signed by an alleged victim of sexual abuse, calling for police to end its investigation into the offence.

He used his position to obtain information “in which he had a personal, rather than professional, interest”, in conflict with his duties as a police officer and was “in no way relevant to his role”, the report said.

The commission found he accessed confidential information held in Victoria Police’s Law Enforcement Assistance Program system, and used his rank and its influence to elicit information from investigating officers.

He also used his position to contact alleged offenders involved in sexual offence investigations and their associates, who were potential witnesses to police investigations.

“During this contact, Superintendent Rosenblum disclosed confidential Victoria Police information,” the IBAC report says.

Rosenblum faced Melbourne Magistrates Court in March and was fined $20,000 for improperly accessing information about a fellow churchgoer, who was the subject of historical sex offence claims.

No conviction was recorded.

He had improperly accessed the LEAP database to make inquiries regarding another parishioner, who in 2013 told a Bible study group he had committed possible historical sex offences.

sumer price index is put at 2.75 per cent.

They concede the global pandemic will continue to pose headwinds for the domestic and global recovery for some time to come.

“However, Australia’s high vaccination rate and increased investment in health system capacity will assist in mitigating the challenges presented by the ongoing global pandemic, including managing new variants.”

Telstra cops huge fine for privacy breach TELSTRA has been fined $2.5 million for a huge privacy breach.

It is the biggest fine ever issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, after the telecommunications giant broke rules designed to protect consumer privacy and safety.

ACMA’s investigation found Telstra failed to upload a user’s choice of number as unlisted to the Integrated Public Number Database on almost 50,000 occasions.

This meant the numbers were available to be published in public phone directories.

The investigation also found Telstra didn’t provide or update data of its Belong customers to the IPND on more than 65,000 occasions.

That database is used by emergency services, including by triple zero when trying to locate people, along with law enforcement and national security agencies.

Telcos must upload customer details to the IPND including phone number, name and address, along with if a number is to be unlisted.

ACMA chair Nerida O’Loughlin said Telstra’s breaches were alarming.

“When people request a silent number it is

often for very important privacy and safety reasons, and we know that the publication of their details can have serious consequences,” she said.

“The provision of these critical services can be hampered and lives put in danger if data is missing, wrong or out of date. It is alarming that Telstra could get this so wrong on such a large scale.”

Ms O’Loughlin said Telstra self-reported and quickly corrected its mistakes, but had breached the same obligations in 2019.

Telstra has paid the fine.

Easier access for all to community garden

By SHANE DOUTHIE WANGARATTA’S Community Garden has become more inclusive and accessible thanks to a $10,000 council community grant.

Mary Daly, Wangaratta community garden coordinator, said the group applied for the grant due to increasing demand for more accessible garden beds.

“We made a raised garden bed for Will (Moore) and others soon enquired about having one,” Mary said.

“The raised garden beds are at a level that makes them easier and safer for people in wheelchairs or with limited movement.

“One of the other major drawbacks for people with a disability is watering the garden so we have set the raised garden beds up so they only need to be watered once a week.”

The council funding will enable the community garden to install another four raised beds as well as another 10 on the ground.

“We want to encourage more of the community to get involved in the garden,” Mary said.

“Even with the pandemic we have been able to garden and we had lots of enquiries and new gardeners coming along.”

The community garden is holding open days each Sunday at 10am when interested people can come along for a tour and learn about the garden from one of the volunteers, and even enjoy a cuppa if their timing is right.

Federal emergency messaging boost A NATIONAL education campaign around bushfire warning messages will see the Federal Government invest $2 million into key messaging around bushfire response.

The ‘Know the Signs’ campaign will inform residents of the new uniform national warning system, set to be used for a number of different hazard types throughout the country, including floods, storms, cyclones and extreme heat.

The national warning system sees information categorised in three ways: advice, watch and act, and emergency warning, however, Minister for Emergency Management and National Recovery and Resilience, Bridget McKenzie, said some residents found the warning system confusing.

“What we saw during the Black Summer bushfires, for example, was that there was a lack of understanding of what action to take depending on the warning,” she said.

“The Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements recommended that there be a national education campaign to improve public understanding of the warning system.

“The campaign will ensure that we all have a clear understanding of what we need to do when we receive a warning message, regardless of where we’re living, working or holidaying – this will potentially save lives.”

“Fire and emergency service agencies across the country have come together to establish the Australian Warning System, which aims to provide simple, high–level warnings to help Australians make the most appropriate decisions for their safety during a range of emergencies and disasters,” she said.

“The ‘Know the Signs‘ campaign complements the work being done by hazard management agencies in each state and territory to embed the Australian Warning System into their operations.”

Enjoy a carols celebration at the cathedral on Sunday LOCAL music groups the Wangaratta Concert Band and Sing Australia will come together on the steps of the Holy Trinity Cathedral as part of a community carol celebration on Sunday.

The event is designed to help everyone get into the festive spirit of Christmas, with no Carols by Candlelight for families this year.

It was Wangaratta Concert Band director Doug McGregor, who also plays keyboard for Sing Australia’s group rehearsals, who invited the choir to join the initiative.

Hosted by the Cathedral

Parish, the two groups will lead the audience as they sing more than a dozen carols and songs, including family favourites “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”, “Joy to the World”, and “Silent Night”, and more, finishing with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”.

Sing Australia and the concert band will also present their own items between the carols, all with a joyful, seasonal flavour.

The event will be held outdoors with audience members welcome to gather on the lawn and bring along their own chairs or rugs.

In the event of rain, Community Christmas Carols will move inside the cathedral.

Community Christmas Carols is supported by the Rural City of Wangaratta who is helping to promote it.

Everyone attending is asked to carry a mask at all times to wear if you cannot socially distance.

Police repel rampant number plate theft A POLICE initiative to reduce the number of number plate thefts in the rural city will see one-way screws available at the Wangaratta Police Station.

Across the state, more than 10,000 number plates are stolen each year, with many used to facilitate further serious crime, such as petrol drive-offs, avoiding speeding and parking fines, and even burglaries and drug trafficking.

The anti-theft screws, available through a goldcoin donation at the local station, are inserted using a flat-based screwdriver but can not be removed in the same manner.

While the screws can make the theft of a number plate more difficult, police also recommend parking in a locked garage or in a well-lit driveway area where possible, in an effort to increase the chances of the thieves being caught.

In the event of a number plate theft, victims should always report the incident to a member of the local police force, before obtaining a new set of plates from VicRoads.

If caught driving without number plates, residents can be fined $144 and three demerit points.

Eligible community members are encouraged to come forward for their third (booster) dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) recommends COVID-19 booster vaccination for anyone aged 18 and older who completed their primary course of COVID-19 vaccination 5 or more months ago.

This means if you received your second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine in July or earlier, you are eligible for a booster dose in December.

Getting a vaccine booster helps maintain immunity against COVID-19.

Little Eagle - nature’s pocket rocket

THE Little Eagle is present throughout our region in low numbers.

It feeds mainly on rabbits when they are available but will eat a range of small to mediumsized reptiles, birds and mammals, as well as insects and sometimes carrion.

This bird is a small, powerful stocky raptor, with a short broad head and moderately long tail, square-cut at the tip when closed.

The legs are heavily feathered and when perching it has a short crest.

Plumage coloring varies from light to dark brown, with a pale broken ‘M’ across the upperparts, which is visible from a distance.

There is also a pale M-shaped band on the underwing.

It has long broad wings,

spanning over 1m, with dark ‘fingered’ tips.

It soars in tight circles, very high on thermals or updraughts, gliding on flat wings.

The female is larger than the male.

The Little Eagle is seen over woodland and timbered farmland, often favoring Redgum woodland along waterways.

They search for food on the wing or from a high exposed perch, taking prey from the ground, the shrub layer or the canopy.

Prey is captured by soaring or flying slowly overhead or watching from a perch before quickly diving or dropping onto their quarry on the ground or crashing into the foliage of a tree after prey.

They have even been seen running after prey on the ground.

Little Eagles nest in mature living trees in open woodland or tree-lined watercourses and rarely nest in isolated trees.

The nest is an open bowl of twigs and branches, lined with green leaves.

The female mainly broods the young and feeds the young, with small pieces of food bill to bill.

The male hunts for food for the young.

The male will incubate the nest while the female eats the food he has brought for her.

The Little Eagle, especially the light morph (form), is often confused with the much more common Whistling Kite, which is similar in size.

To pick the difference look for the Little Eagle’s flight pattern - soaring in tight circles with flat wings is distinctive as is the underwing ‘M’ pattern, as are the long, broad wings.

Little Eagles can be seen soaring above the woodland canopy of the Warby Range and Lower Ovens River.

The campaign showcases the benefits of a career in child protection, which provides many opportunities to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families.

There are a broad range of roles to choose from across various levels, which offer professional development, career progression and the chance to work with diverse and dynamic teams across the state.

With enhanced workforce support, job flexibility and training, there’s never been a better time to consider a career in child protection.

Ben Dunn is proud to have worked as a child protection practitioner for almost three years and encourages people to “just give it a go”.

Crosher Lane fire quelled A FIRE which broke out at a North Wangaratta factory early yesterday morning took almost an hour to quell, despite being largely contained to one room of the premise.

Some eight FRV firefighters, as well as four CFA vehicles, responded to the blaze on Crosher Lane at 6am, when they discovered multiple building sprinklers had worked to douse the initial blaze.

An FRV spokesperson said crews had battled for close to an hour to bring the blaze under control.

“Wearing breathing apparatus, crews quickly attacked the fire, bringing it under control by 6:55am,” the spokesperson said.

“Firefighters remained on site to extinguish remaining hot spots.”

Fire response after caravan overheats REPORTS of a possible fire on the Hume Freeway saw emergency services crews flock to the southbound lane near Winton on Monday, to find a caravan wheel had overheated.

CFA crews from Winton and Benalla brigades worked to cool the axle and wheel bearing around 8:30am, while ambulance crews also attended but were not required to provide emergency treatment or transport.

The scene was declared safe by CFA members shortly before 9am.

Food, wine, sun, laughter and friendship

By BELINDA HARRISON IN a sign of how well regarded the Grapes of Mirth comedy afternoon is, as well as how keen patrons were to get out of the house and laugh again, the grounds of Brown Brothers in Milawa were flooded with more than 850 guests on Saturday, December 11.

The day was warm but the huge trees provided the perfect temperature, especially when the breeze swept through and the food vans and bar areas were often visited and enjoyed.

Dave Thornton was a worthy replacement MC for Merrick Watts, who although he was without the official duty, did jump up on stage to welcome the crowd before bringing Dave on.

Wagga local Dane Simpson shared stories of his family and how the tone of their Aboriginal skin differs from dark to light; his father explains it simply as ‘the Texta ran out’.

Alex Ward was an absolute pocket rocket and said that getting out of lockdown after basically only speaking to one person was causing misunderstandings with Alex recently yelling at her dog to get out of the bin to which her girlfriend called out from the other room - are you talking to me?

Claire Hooper admitted that during lockdown she had played a little game with herself each morning by naming something that she was better at than her husband - like making the bed or being faster in the toilet.

Australian comedy royalty Judith Lucy headed down onto the grass for her set where she complimented a couple of ladies for their dance moves during one of the breaks and then shared some of their cocktail jug.

She had everyone in stitches with her usual comedic timing and bluntness and managed to put a couple of young women on the spot

Tom Ballard rounded up the comedic portion of the afternoon and shared his ‘round COVID’ shape as well as a new food ordering system “Uber Chew” which might be the next big thing where not only is your food delivered to you, but someone moves your mouth and helps you chew it.

A few of his jokes did find some sensitive spots with the audience when he gave his thoughts freely on ‘ScoMo’, Liberal politicians and their supporters and baby boomers with their homes, investment properties and caravans.

DJ Pedro kept the crowd entertained with new mixes of old favourites as well as traditional versions in between the sets and before and after the comedians had finished and the crowd was happy to party on to the music until time was called for another year.

Lake Buffalo boating infrastructure upgrade BOAT ramp improvements at Lake Buffalo are among priorities contained within the State Government’s Victorian Recreational Boating Strategy, released last week.

The strategy sets the vision for boating investment and infrastructure in Victoria until 2030.

It is the first-of-its-kind, with Better Boating Victoria leading the development in a co-design process with boating stakeholders over the past year.

Guiding government investment in improving recreational boating, the strategy outlines priorities identified by boaters through extensive consultation, including drop-in sessions at key boating locations.

A ministerial roundtable was also created to inform the strategy and included industry leaders.

At Lake Buffalo, $250,000 in funding will go towards redeveloping parking, providing additional trailer spaces, and progressing improvements to the boat ramp.

This includes re-enforcing the foreshore area to protect the ramp from erosion and ensuring boats can be moored around the ramp.

On the Ovens River, funding will help develop upgrade plans

BETTER BOATING: Soon it’ll be easier than ever to get your boat out on Lake Buffalo, with $250,000 worth of improvements on its way to the lake. for ramps and carparks at Cameron’s Bend, Boorhaman North Reserve and Peechelba.

Future improvements have also been identified as priorities at several locations along the Murray and Mitta Mitta rivers.

Underpinned by the strategy, annual action plans will allocate the yearly investment from the Better Boating Fund.

This fund was established in 2021 to put recreational boating

registration and licence fees to work and is reinvesting a record $33 million this financial year into projects and programs to make boating even better.

Better Boating Victoria will manage the fund's distribution, having already made it free to park and launch at Victorian boat ramps - and is delivering the most significant boat ramp construction program in the state's history.

“Providing better access to our waterways for boating is vital to the local community - through local grassroots boaters and tourists heading to these locations we are also backing regional businesses,” Northern Victoria MP Jaclyn Symes said.

Don’t forget your water smarts on our dams, lakes over summer WITH the summer holidays approaching Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) is reminding people visiting the region’s lakes, dams and reservoirs to stay safe on the water.

Recent rainfall means many of the storages in the region, such as Lake Buffalo, are in great condition for recreational users.

However, with an influx of visitors expected, it is particularly important that people make good decisions on and around the water.

GMW water storage services acting general manager Scott Wikman encouraged people visiting storages to plan ahead and ensure they are familiar with the rules.

“We’re looking for people to make smart choices so that everyone visiting our storages enjoys their time and returns home safe,” he said.

“When visiting, be sure to stay safe at all times by following the rules for safe boating, including following speed restrictions and wearing a lifejacket.

“Any temporary speed restrictions are signposted at public boat ramps.

“At all other times you should travel at a safe speed for the water level and conditions.”

GMW’s Water Smarts campaign highlights the seven most common risks and hazards when boating and swimming at our water storages.

These are: 1. Be throttle smart - stick to a safe speed; 2. Be jacket smart - wear your lifejacket; 3. Be mate smart - always take a mate; 4. Be conditions smart - check the weather and water levels; 5. Be alcohol smart - don’t drink on the water; 6. Be hazards smart - be aware of submerged rocks, sandbars, trees, shallow water and debris; 7. Be dive smart - never jump from dam walls or ledges.

Bright new water slide to make a splash Sunday

By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE GRAB your swimmers and get in line for a turn on the Rotary Club of Bright’s brand new water slide in Bright, opening free for kids this weekend.

After more than six months of hard work from all involved, the 34 year old slide has been returned to its former glory with 30 new pieces, moulded from the original by Melbournebased business Fibreglass

Victoria, assembled at the beginning of the month.

Club president elect, Dee Hedley, thanked all members and volunteers for their help with the project.

“It has been a much bigger job than expected so we are so proud of our efforts and are totally ecstatic to see the project finished,” she said.

“The project was not only to replace the slide but to update and better the waiting area at the top, as well as

the fencing.

“It has all come together brilliantly.”

The club was successful in receiving several Bushfire Recovery Victoria grants, with the support of Alpine Shire Council, for the $150,000 project.

The water slide is opening free for kids from 1-3pm this Sunday, December 19, before officially opening on December 26.

Producers look forward to super cattle sale Newly-announced GROW Myrtleford community fund also to cash in

THIS Friday’s special cattle sale in Myrtleford is set to be one of the biggest of the calendar year, with quality cattle expected to go for staggering prices.

The sale is also a fundraising opportunity for the newlyannounced GROW Myrtleford community fund, with vendors and buyers encouraged to donate funds or stock to pour money back into the town.

Spread across the town’s two main saleyards in Howell Lane and Matheson Lane, around 1800 head of local stock are set to go under the hammer, potentially seeing up to $4 million changing hands.

Nutrien Ivone Agencies agent Dan Ivone said the conditions were perfect for a mammoth sale, both in quantity and prices.

“It’s up there with one of the bigger ones we’ve had,” he said.

“We’ll have 1800 head which is good, we’ll have it at both sets of saleyards at Myrtleford to fit it in.

“Because we’ve got so many cows and calves, they take up a

“A lot of the older fellas are saying they haven’t seen a season like it.

Local cattle producer Chris Dalbosco said the sale would be exceptionally strong, with the demand for Australian beef so high driving up prices.

“The prices are going to be prices we probably haven’t seen

before, they just seem to keep going up and up at the moment.

“The calves I reckon probably haven’t got the weight they had last year - I’ve spoken to other farmers around the area and they’re sort of saying the same thing.

“And it’s not going to matter this year, weights aren’t going to matter.

“I’m going to get more than last year, and last year was a cracking year, best prices ever, and it’s going to be better again this year.

“I don’t think prices are going to drop any time soon - there

Mr Dalbosco said he hoped to get between $1900 - $2000 for the 110 head of stock he will bring to the sale.

The Myrtleford special cattle sale kicks off this Friday from 10.30am with the sale of cows and calves and PTIC females at the Nutrien yards in Howell Lane, before moving to the Paull & Scollard Nutrien yards in Mathesons Lane for the weaners.

Harris household lit up with festive cheer

By ANITA McPHERSON, Friday, December 16, 2011 FESTIVE fever is spreading around the streets of Wangaratta and beyond, as more residents get into the spirit of the season and decorate their homes and gardens.

At 13 Oxford Drive, the Harris family has been working on their growing display since November, spending weekends rigging up the lights and getting Rudolph and his mates settled on the front lawn.

Chelsea Harris said children in the street love the display and wait excitedly to see what happens when the sun goes down.

“Every night as soon as we turn them on, you can hear them screaming and laughing,” said Chelsea.

The temptation to keep adding to the annual display, which includes lights, trees, Santas and reindeer with a sleigh, is hard to resist.

A new addition, and Chelsea’s favorite, is a blow up igloo with a snowman that pops up and down.

“It’s my favorite time of year and we just love Christmas at our home,” said Chelsea.

“Our family always gets together at Christmas.”

Palisade offers chance to size up lifestyle

Ŷ NOT SO BULKY: Hyundai Palisade is long on space and versatility

BELIEVE it or not, there are some people who wish to maximise vehicle seating capacity without being held hostage to the LCV-like people mover or rugged offroader.

These folk need look no farther than the Hyundai Palisade, a sports utility vehicle capable of carrying up to seven or eight people.

Now, with a name in the origins of a paling fence or line of lofty cliffs, the Palisade, for 2022, is taking up more ground by the addition of a third variant - the Elite - dividing the entry-level Palisade from the rangetopping Palisade Highlander. All siblings come with petrol, or diesel power in two- or all-wheel drive.

Available as a seven- or eight-seater, the Elite features a 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia unit with satellite navigation and 12-speaker Infinity Premium sound, heated front seats a single panel glass sunroof, rear privacy glass, a

The entry-level Palisade 3.8 GDi petrol 2WD is priced at $55,000, plus on-road costs, the similar Elite chipping in at $61,500, while the range-topping Highlander 2.2 CRDi diesel AWD sells for $75,000.

On test was the Palisade Highlander 3.8-litre GDi, four-cylinder petrol, eightspeed automatic, frontwheel drive, eight-seater SUV. STYLING Despite old-style design, side on, the Palisade carries its almost five-metre length well, with wagon-like proportions doing nothing to trouble, or excite, the discerning eye.

New to the big SUV are body-coloured bumpers, with 20-inch so-called Calligraphy alloy wheels fitting

in nicely. Oh, and there is a full-size spare under the rear.

INTERIOR In eight-seat configuration, the Palisade has plenty of room up front. While the third row, which is sold as a three-seater, falls short of adult dimensions, it is relatively easy to gain access, the second row sliding forward up to 220 mm.

Boot volume is 311 litres with all three rows in position, which increases to 704 litres with two rows in use.

Towing capacity of 2200 kg is nothing to write home about.

Seven USB ports, four 12V sockets and up to 16 cup holders, including four in each of the second and third rows, are conveniently at hand.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The Palisade upgrade continues with the choice of a 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine, with two-wheel drive, or 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, with

all-wheel drive. Both are mated with an eight-speed automatic.

DRIVING With such a big vehicle, fuel consumption becomes increasingly linked to the loads being carried. Hyundai says 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres is the average for the Palisade in the combined urban / highway cycle.

With all eight seating positions taken, the test vehicle tipped petrol consumption over 12 litres per 100 kilometres in a mix of town and country conditions.

While other eight-seat SUVs are based on a heavyduty four-wheel-drive ‘ladder frame’ chassis, the Hyundai Palisade is built like a car.

That means its centre of gravity is lower and steering and suspension should be more like the average passenger vehicle. Travelling in stop-start city low-speed conditions, this is the case.

Sharp cornering at speed

is a different matter. The big unit needs a deal of due care and attention to keep it on the not-so straight and narrow. A lesson soon learnt.

Turning circle, at 11.8 metres, for a vehicle of this length, is surprisingly taut and the width (a tad under two metres) means the car can handle the average shopping centre parking spot with room to spare.

The backside, however, does tend to stick out into the aisle.

Drive modes - Comfort, day-to-day driving, eco fuel saver, sport spices up things, and smart switches on to algorithms turned to the driver’s most recent behaviour patterns.

2022 KIA Sportage GT-Line

By EWAN KENNEDY KIA Sportage is almost an ‘oldtimer’ in this day and age, having been around since 1993. It’s undergone quite a few upgrades and changes in almost 30 years on the market.

The fifth generation is built on a new architecture and has fascinating styling. It’s no longer aimed at buyers who simply want to move people, it’s designed to be stylish and even slightly upmarket in people’s minds.

STYLING The classic Kia Tiger Nose grille and boomerangshaped daytime running lamps make a real styling statement. At the rear it has what you could call a swooping fastback design.

The fifth-generation Sportage has boomerangshaped LEDs, razor rear lamps and a swooping curved roof that gives it a look that almost leans in the direction of a coupe. The Snow While Pearl on our test car tied in beautifully with the large black sunroof and the black wheels.

The dual aero spoilers, one above the rear window the other below add to the sporting looks.

The bold arrow-like shape of the daytime run-

ning lights certainly says they are there for more than providing visibility for other road users.

INTERIOR Can’t say the blackon-black interior is to our tastes, but it’s the trendy thing these days so it will help to sell more Sportages.

The latest Sportage has a wheelbase of 2755mm, a length of 4660mm, width of 1865mm and height of 1660mm. There’s 1050mm legroom for second-row passengers and 1000mm headroom. This is noticeably better than the outgoing model. This means someone of my size and build can get comfortable in the rear without having to ask the driver to share space with me.

Three abreast in the rear seat is pretty good in this latest generation if the occupants are of normal width, if one or more are on the tubby side it does get less comfortable. The centre tunnel is low and doesn’t force the person in the centre seat to sit with their feet beside it.

INFOTAINMENT Inside there’s a curved 12.3-inch digital cluster, and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen in the GT-Line we tested. It’s easy to see at a quick glance, thus mini-

mising the time the driver takes their eyes off the road.

The sound system is by harman/kardon and could be easily adjusted to produce the sort of outputs we like.

DRIVING Kia Sportage has been the subject of Kia Australia’s Local Ride and Handling Program, the Sportage is designed to cater to Australian roads and the style of driving Australians prefer. it’s no sports machine but comes closer than we anticipated in the way it turns in promptly and is happy to change direction if the road tightens or loosens.

Debuting in the Sportage GT-Line is a 3D surround view monitor which optimises images from four cameras (front, side mirrors and rear) to provide a 360-degree view in various modes.

It allows the user to easily zoom and drag the camera view to suit their needs.

This is particularly useful when squeezing backwards into a tight spot in a carpark, especially an underground one with poor lighting.

SUMMING UP Kia’s latest Sportage is a solid reworking of the models before it and it looks certain to continue the sales successes of its four ancestors.

Toy run to bring smiles to local families

RIDING FOR A CAUSE: Motorcycle riders from across the North East gathered in the grounds of The Happy Valley Hotel at Ovens for the annual Salvos toy run.

AROUND 50 social motorbike riders and volunteers enjoyed a barbecue lunch with purpose, in the grounds of The Happy Valley Hotel at Ovens on Sunday.

The gathering was part of the annual North East, Alpine Valleys toy run, social ride and lunch.

Riders donated well over $800 this year, plus a uteload of toys, to support local families in need.

Motorcyclists came from Albury and Wodonga, Yackandandah, Mudgegonga, Myrtleford, Bright and Mount Beauty.

Food for the barbecue was donated by the Star Hotel in Yackandandah, while the Happy Valley Hotel at Ovens donated cash and use of its grounds.

The toy run delivers toys and cash every year to be distributed in the community by The Salvation Army Beechworth.

SUCH GENEROSITY: Beechworth-based Salvation Army Captain Pauline Middleton was overhwlemed with the donation of toys to support local families.

It began in the 1990s as an initiative of a Bright-based Ulysses social motorcycle club, and has continued as an annual event, open to all interested social riders.

Trevor Botting - who coorganised the event with Stump Hogg - said the riders enjoy the event as a social day, but also with the knowl-

edge that the gifts and funds will bring joy to kids and parents who are struggling.

“It really is just so important to bring smiles to kids and parents who might be having a tough time this Christmas,” he said.

“We know that even a small gift can make a difference.”

COOKING UP A STORM: Co-organiser Trevor Botting was on barbecue duties to help feed the large turnout.

Beechworth-based Salvation Army Captain Pauline Middleton said that a team of Salvos volunteers will begin distributing gifts, food and vouchers to families in need from around the Alpine and Indigo shires this week.

With a broad smile, but wiping away a tear, Pauline

said, “I don’t think these riders fully understand how much this will mean to so many people”.

“Their generosity really knocks our socks off,” she said.

“We don’t know yet how many more people need help this year, but the complexity of the struggles many

people are facing, after fires, COVID-19 lockdowns and more, has definitely grown.

“Rental accommodation in the area is now so hard to find and rental costs have risen by over 30 per cent in the past year.

“There are so many people locally affected by suicide and other loss of loved ones, people who have lost jobs, families struggling with physical and mental illness.

“If you go through the local valleys there are also businesses that closed down and never reopened.”

Pauline thanked the riders and closed by saying she hoped God would bless them all with joy and peace over the Christmas break.

“We all need extra joy and peace,” she said to the gathered riders.

“Your help means so much. We see a lot of smiles at Christmas time, but we also see a lot of tears.”

Tankers to lead aerial fire response THE state’s fire response is set to be bolstered this summer, with 50 aircraft to be deployed across Victoria to combat summer bushfires, including a CH47 Chinook helicopter and a new Large Air Tanker (LAT).

Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes announced the summer fleet arrangements recently, with more than 34,000 litres of carrying capacity to be added to the existing roster, providing greater flexibility in the skies and on the ground.

Aircraft such as the CH47 Chinook, Aircrane and Super Puma are expected to reflect a modernised fixedwing and helicopter fleet, while the new LAT will be able to operate from regional airports where less room is available for take-off and landing, affording the fleet greater agility.

The LAT is set to be shared with Queensland, but will be based at Avalon Airport throughout the Victorian summer.

Ms Symes said updating the existing fleet had been an important step ahead of an anticipated busy summer.

“These aircraft are always a critical weapon in our firefighters’ arsenal during summer, ensuring that Victoria has the strongest possible fire response each year as we head into the fire season,” she said.

In addition, the Night Fire Aviation Program is set to continue this summer, with the new Chinook to supply up to 11,000 litres of water or retardant in an effort to manage small fires before they become out of control, and can operate during the day and overnight.

Emergency Management commissioner Andrew Crisp said the strategic approach undertaken by the state’s aerial fleet will support ground forces in providing an immediate response during the early stages of fires.

“Our 50 aircraft will be strategically placed across the state according to risk and we can move them quickly to respond to fires anywhere,” he said.

“I’m confident that this aerial firefighting fleet will complement the great work that our firefighters do to keep our community safe.”

EVER PRESENT DANGER: Despite the relatively wet and mild conditions authorities warn that grassfires remain a real danger.

Fire safety takes no breaks in La Nina

FIRE chiefs are urging Victorian holidaymakers to take care when embarking on school getaways, with grassfires expected to impact the regions in coming weeks.

According to Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) deputy commissioner fire safety Michelle Young, Victorians keen to explore the state in the wake of reduced restrictions should remain aware of emergency warnings and be prepared to evacuate if the need arises.

“When visiting unfamiliar territory over summer it is very important that visitors learn which fire district they are in and monitor the fire danger ratings,” she said.

“We may be experiencing a La

Nina weather pattern but that does not leave room for complacency - last year during La Nina fire services responded to several significant grassfires that came dangerously close to homes.

“Check the fire danger ratings every day throughout summer, and never travel to or through areas with dense bushlands or grasslands on extreme or code red days.

“Download the VicEmergency app and set up watch zones for the location you’re visiting, so you will be notified of any fires or other emergency incidents during your stay.”

Acting CFA chief officer Garry Cook said the grassfires, which are expected to thrive on fuel

which grew through an unseasonably wet spring, could pose significant threat to anyone who was underprepared.

According to Mr Cook, grassfires could travel at speeds of up to 25kph and had the capacity to jump highways in some circumstances.

“Before you jump in the car, pop into the VicEmergency app to check if there are any incidents in areas along your planned route,” he said.

“CFA’s website has a map of Victoria that details the fire danger ratings for districts across the state, so please ensure you view this before travelling - if fire danger ratings are severe or higher,

WANGARATTA Warriors face a huge weekend of basketball with an on the road double-header scheduled.

On Saturday, Wangaratta heads to Wodonga to face the Wolves, followed by a match up with the second placed Wallan at RB Robson Wallan Indoor Sports Stadium.

Wangaratta Basketball Inc president Adam Maher said the local side is eyeing redemption after a 53 point thrashing to Seymour last weekend.

“It was a hard game (against Seymour),” Maher said.

“They’ll be wanting to regroup and make sure that they’re competitive whether it’s a win or loss.

“I’d predict that Wodonga and Wallan will be top three outfits along with Seymour so it’s doesn’t get any easier.”

Wodonga have recorded two wins and a loss from their three games, while Wallan have won three from four.

“Wodonga will be a hard task on Saturday,” Maher said.

“They’re a really polished unit with a good roster.

“Wallan have been a classy outfit for the past few years too so we really need to make sure we compete.”

Steve Smith lost the Australian captaincy in a bizarre cheating scandal.

Now, he’s back as Test skipper in arguably even more bizarre circumstances.

Had Pat Cummins sat at a different table at an Adelaide restaurant on Wednesday, he’d be leading Australia in the second Test against England.

But the chap at the table next to him was, during dinner, informed he had COVID-19 so Cummins has been a close contact and forced to isolate for seven days.

And so the tables turn for Smith.

“It’s a huge honour obviously,” Smith said after winning the toss and batting.

“It has been a pretty interesting morning, a bit been going on.

He was right.

Fabled Test captain Ian Chappell and the legendary Shane Warne panned Smith’s return to the leadership role.

“There will be some negativity from some people around it,”Smith said on November 26.

“I understand that and I get that.

“But for me, I know that I’ve grown a great deal over the last three or four years.

“I’m a more rounded individual. And in turn, I think it’s turned me into a better leader.”

WARBY WALKERS FRIDAY, December 10: Beechworth Gorge Ramble : Lesley led a small group along this delightful medium walk of about 8km, in the rugged granite gorge area of the Beechworth Historic Park.

Starting at the Powder Magazine, we visited many features such as the Precipice and Fidde’s Quarry.

From near Ingram’s Rock, we spent time really enjoying the fantastic views over the Woolshed Valley and marvelled at the changes that this valley has experienced from the early 1850’s when gold was discovered and many thousands of diggers were camped there.

The many small granite quarries passed, are evidence of the amazingly hard work that the pioneers carried out cutting out the very hard rock and then transporting it into nearby Beechworth town for early building construction.

At one stage, a very social echidna was encountered beside the track.

She just stared at us rather than hiding her beak and we assumed that residing along this very popular ramble has meant that this special animal is now quite blasé about visitors invading her territory.

Friday, December 10 : The club’s well attended Christmas Party was held at the excellent Bowman’s - Murmungee Memorial Hall. It was an informal gathering, but Cecily our president took the opportunity to briefly examine what was another very successful year for the club, which now has a membership of over 140.

Coming events: Friday, Dec 17 to Sunday, Dec 19 Weekend camp at Harrietville, Chris, 0418 503 802 Camping at Harrietville caravan park (book your own accommodation). A hard walk of approx 22k along The Razorback to Federation Hut, and Mt Feathertop, then a descent down the Bungalow Spur track back to Harrietville. An easy walk on the Sunday.

Saturday, January 1: Grasstree Loop, Warby Ovens NP, Chris, 0418 503 802. Celebrate New Year’s Day with a medium loop walk of approx 12k on bush tracks in the WONP, passing through many colonies of grass trees, lots of wattles and rocky scenery. The walk starts and finishes at Wenham’s Camp, and takes in Mt Warby.

Davis duo not without a chance under lights

LOCAL trainers will be hoping Moonee Valley is a happy hunting ground tonight.

Six locally trained gallopers will make the trek to Melbourne with the Chris Davis, Ben Brisbourne, Dan McCarthy and Craig Weeding stables all saddling runners up.

Davis will be looking for his second winner in a week after High Resolution took out race one at Wangaratta last Saturday.

Polar opposites will run for the Davis stable in three-yearold filly by Helmet, Sweet Bella, who will run her first start in race one, followed by 105 start veteran Just Stellar ($41) in race four (benchmark 64).

The stable will also have five runners try their hands earlier on in the day at Yarra Valley.

“We’ll have runners at both Yarra Valley and Moonee Valley so it’ll be a busy day,” Davis said.

“We’ll organise to have someone at either track and hopefully we can get a bit of luck.”

The filly’s barrier draw of 11 won’t help her chances, however, and will be seen as a rank outsider at $71.

“Sweet Bella has trialled really well and the only one she didn’t run well in Madison Lloyd lost her stirrup,” Davis said.

“We tossed up whether to run her at Wangaratta last Saturday or Moonee Valley but we thought we’d hold off for Moonee Valley.

“She’s definitely ready for it though and although she’s the

only first starter she has plenty of experience through her trials.

“She’s ran on well in 1100m trials so we’ll step her up to 1200m.”

Nine-year-old mare Just Stellar has won and placed at the track previously and won’t be without a chance.

“Just Stellar’s a good 58 grade horse and has won plenty of times there but she’ll step up to 64 and getting an apprentice on (Teo Nugent) will help,” Davis said.

“Teo’s won five races on her and I don’t think the wide barrier (10) will affect her too much because she always puts herself on the button.

“She likes Moonee Valley too.”

At Yarra Valley, Night Terror (race three), One Little Kiss (race five), Diplomatic Miss (race five) and Destiny’s Dee Day (race seven) will all be in action.

Davis has labelled six-yearold mare Night Terror as his best chance.

“Night Terror was knocking on the door last start,” Davis said.

“She got out in front and then got gassed, she was the bunny for the others to chase down.

“We’re keen to take her to Yarra Valley, she’s looking a million bucks.”

Meanwhile, Brisbourne’s Fontein Diamond and Secret Sheema will also be in action at Moonee Valley.

For McCarthy, Ashtrain will be eyeing a fifth career victory in race five, while Weeding’s Big Day Out will go up against the McCarthy trained galloper.

On Saturday, Brisbourne’s Nordic Pride will go around at Flemington in race eight, the $130,000 #Lovethehorse Trophy over 1600m.

City Colts looking for back-to-back wins

CITY Colts will be looking for back-to-back wins this weekend in the final round before the Christmas break.

After a confidence building 40 run win over Benalla last weekend, the Colts face Beechworth who are coming off a shattering loss to Delatite who chased their modest total of 110 down with two balls to spare.

“You can never underestimate Beechworth,” City Colts skipper Mitch Giggins said.

“They’ve got players like the Sur-

rey boys, Matt Ryan and Mark Butters is back too so they’re going to be a good test.”

City Colts are likely to welcome opening bowler Mitch Clayton and Tom Moore as Fraser Ellis and Giggins go out of the side this weekend.

Ellis was a star in his one off match for his old side, slapping 41 runs and picking up 1/10.

“It was great for the young blokes to see how professional Fraser is about his cricket,” Giggins said.

“Hopefully some of the young fellas can take a leaf out of his book.

“Mitch Clayton will come back in

after a couple of weeks off and Tom Moore made 40 odd in the twos last week so I’d say he’ll probably slot straight back in as well.”

City Colts have experienced a mediocre start to the 2021/22 WDCA season, winning two games to sit second last on the ladder.

“We’ve got the two wins under our belt but should have had three because we threw a game away,” Giggins said.

“We’ve had a pretty tough draw so far though and we knew going in to the season that we’d be a little bit undermanned.

“A few blokes have surprised us though and for us it’s all about developing our young blokes.

“If they can get a few years of senior cricket under their belt in two or three we’ll have a really strong side.”

The Colts return home to Barr Reserve after playing in Benalla last Saturday.

“We play our best cricket at home,” Giggins said.

“We’ve got our Christmas party after as well so I know the boys are keen to get a win because the beers always taste a bit better when you win.”

Hawks want top four ROVERS United Bruck (RUB) will be looking to go into the Christmas break with an early present, a win over Ovens Valley United tomorrow securing their place in the top four of the combined A grade ladder.

After a bitter loss at the hands of Yarrawonga Mulwala last weekend, RUB need to strike back hard to gain momentum heading into the second part of the season.

Although the Hawks have lost their past two games, Ovens Valley United are in the same position after losses to Beechworth and Wangaratta Magpies the past two weekends.

“Whoever wins this will go into the top four at the Christmas break so it’s going to be a big game,” RUB skipper Paddy McNamara said.

“We want to get in front of the eight ball by winning this weekend which will set ourselves up after Christmas.

Hopefully we can win and get some confidence back.”

McNamara said he wants his top four batters to put value on their wicket against the Tigers, however, that won’t be easy as the Tigers boast one of the inform spinners in the league in Josh Newton.

Newton has taken nine wickets for the year to sit third on the wicket taking tally.

weeks we just need someone in our top four to take some ownership and make a big score,” McNamara said.

“We haven’t been able to bat around someone who’s made a big score.

“We’ve been there or thereabouts in both the losses though which is a positive.”

Youngsters Jez Rigoni and Darcy Wilson impressed last weekend in their loss to Yarrawonga Mulwala.

Rigoni made a patient 43 with the bat, while Wilson took 3/33 with the ball.

“There are definitely positives to take out of the past few weeks,” McNamara said.

“Jez Rigoni and Darcy Wilson showed great signs against the top side which is a huge positive.

“It was great to see Darcy in the Vic Country side too, he’s a gun at everything.”

In other matches around the area tomorrow, City Colts host Beechworth on the gorgeous Bill O’Callaghan Oval, Benalla makes the drive up to Yarrawonga to take on the Lakers, and it’s second versus third when the Magpies take on Delatite at Norm Minns Oval.

Wangaratta A1 remain undefeated A1: WANGARATTA maintained its unbeaten run with an impressive away win against competition powerhouse Wodonga on Saturday.

Wangaratta were on the back foot early as last year’s premiers shot out of the blocks to open up an early double-digit lead.

Wangaratta were able to steady and by the halfway mark had opened up a slender lead before pushing the margin out to over 20 shots before withstanding the inevitable fightback by Wodonga to win by 17.

Maurie Braden, Dylan Filuk, Gary Chambers and Graeme Smith defeated Jason King’s rink (24-15) and Ian Brimblecombe,

Laurie McDonald, Craig Fruend and Greg Braden won against Kylie Whitehead (23-17).

Adrian Pantling, Jodie Fruend, Gerald Brown and Rhoanna Smith were Wangaratta’s other winning rink beating Mason Bayliss (20-16), while Ethan Fruend’s rink just went down to Peter McLarty (21-23).

Final scores: Wangaratta 16 pts 88 shots def Wodonga 2 pts 71 shots.

Wangaratta will play Rutherglen in a Friday twilight game (6pm start) at Rutherglen next week.

A3: Wangaratta also remain undefeated after a hard-fought home win against Yarrawonga on Saturday.

THE Ovens and King Football Netball League is excited to officially release the 2022 fixture, which offers plenty of exciting matches and plenty of value for each club involved.

Quickly moving past a disappointing end to a frustrating 2021 season the league is excited to announce what it hopes will be another tight fixture and race for the five grades of netball and two grades of football in 2022.

The 2022 season will kick off on March 26 with the earlier start factoring in two byes for each club and the Queen’s Birthday long weekend resulting in a league-wide bye for all but two clubs when Bright and Bonnie Doon will play in the first week of the round 12 split round which will see football and netball played on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend at Pioneer Park.

Season 2022 kicks off with two blockbuster matches with the 2019 grand final rematch between Milawa and Greta set to continue a budding rivalry on the netball court, while Whorouly will host Bright in what is sure to be a cracking game on the football field.

Easter falls on round 4 in 2022 and this will see OKFNL clubs and spectators celebrate Easter, with clubs’ traditional Good Friday and Easter Saturday matches, with games again at popular holiday spots, King Valley, Bright and Bonnie Doon again set to put O&K football and netball on full display; while Moyhu will host Greta at Easter this year with the fierce rivals looking for strong starts to the season.

“Each year the fixture is a big part of the OKFNL off season, and as always there are a number of complexities to take into consideration; with the weekly bye and Easter round scheduling as well as when home games fell were consistent across the league were priorities - it is a tough act to juggle,” OKFNL league manager Cam Green said.

“The OKFNL received over 25 individual fixture requests from clubs, all the while also considering neighbouring fixtures such as the Ovens and Murray and the Goulburn Valley and how this affects key match ups and clubs’ home games.

“We do try to accommodate all the clubs’ requests, however, there are a number of factors which mean some clubs will miss out on one or two of these requests, some of these factors include ground availabilities and other conflicting club requests.”

The season will ramp up for a big finals series in late August and the league’s showpiece event, the grand final, is scheduled for September 10.

Running for a reason SUCCESS: All the training Lewis Holland-Dean and Sophia McCarthy put into doing their best in the half marathon paid off, with the pair raising over $2000 for Beyond Blue.

AFTER literally months of waiting, two local athletes completed the 21.1km half marathon event of the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival last weekend, with their fundraising campaign earning over $2000 for Beyond Blue.

Greta South’s Sophia McCarthy and Glenrowan’s Lewis Holland Dean were training hard for the event’s original start date of October 10, before COVID restrictions forced organisers to push the event back until early December.

“Since we signed up ages ago it was hard when it got moved to December,” McCarthy said.

“I got bad blisters a little while ago and that set me back a bit, but to have the extra time to do it was good.

“But it did make it a bit more difficult just staying fit and motivated without training.”

Half-marathoners’ fundraiser a success The pair set off on Sunday with the rest of the 8169 runners at 7am just north of Rod Laver Arena, before running down Flinders Street before beginning the long slog down St Kilda Road.

“It was nice, it was a nice day which is lucky for Melbourne because you never know what you’re going to get there,” McCarthy said.

“There were a lot of people there, I didn’t

really know what to expect obviously - I haven’t done one before.

“It was a nice run running in the streets of Melbourne was pretty cool.”

The course took the pair around Albert Park Lake and back up St Kilda Road, but with just under six kilometres to go, McCarthy started flagging.

“I felt pretty good up until around 15km, and then it got a bit harder - I

don’t know if I just got heavy legs or whatever,” she said, “Lewis was fine, he’s a bit fitter than me, but we ran together the whole way which was good, we stuck together.

“The last five or six kilometres were pretty tough but we just kept going and got it done.”

The pair crossed the finish line in the MCG in a time of 2:26.13, and thanks to their fundraising efforts,

raised $2077.50 for Beyond Blue.

“We didn’t expect it - our goal of $1500 we thought was maybe a bit over projected, but heaps of friends and family and people from the community got around us, which was great,” McCarthy said.

“That’s a lot of money for just two young kids.

“I think it’s great what we’ve done and I’m so happy we did it.

“I reckon I might do it again next year, but hopefully run a bit better time.”
