COUNCIL is more likely than not to keep a municipal rate rise under the State Government’s recommended 3.5 per cent maximum figure for 2023–24 to ease the burden on rural city homeowners, according to Mayor Dean Rees.

The increase in general municipal rates in 20222–23 was 1.75pc, way below the consumer price index inflation that put a strain on coun-

cil services across Victoria.

“At this stage we haven’t decided, we are having very, very robust conversations about it and I have a feeling we won’t go the full 3.5pc,” he told the Wangaratta Chronicle.

“Even though the State Government thinks 3.5pc is fair and it’s down from the 4.2pc rise the independent assessment panel thinks it should be, I personally feel it’s too high.

“For the tough times

ahead over the next 12 or 18 months, we need to cut our budget and make sure we look at things correctly and this includes the rate cap.”

Cr Rees reported there are currently some councillors who would like to keep the 3.5pc and there are certainly others who are saying it should be lower.

“It will be an interesting council meeting regarding where the vote goes,” he said.

“It’s a hard time for peo-

ple...Deputy Mayor Harry Bussell and I think we need to have a fair go for everyone and sometimes that means council has to bite the bullet and reduce spending.

“We might need to look at renewal rather than budget for new infrastructure projects and then we can look at it again next year.”

Cr Rees said senior council staff indicated that if we lose $300–$400k out of the budget now, it has a cumula-

tive effect equating to $3–4 million in 10 years time.

He said this might be right but he believes council needs to look at people’s immediate hardship above anything else.

“In recent years we’ve had big spends with the Barr Reserve‘s aquatic centre and basketball courts, a State Government grant for netball courts and we have so many communities calling out for more money,” he said.

Inquiry into deposit and rate-setting decision by the banks THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will investigate how banks set interest rates for savers, including differences in interest rate increases between bank deposits and home loans.

It comes after the Federal Government directed the ACCC to commence an inquiry into Australia’s retail deposit market.

“We welcome this direction from the government to shine a light on the retail deposit market and ratesetting decisions of banks,” ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said.

“We are aware that deposit and savings accounts are an important source of income for many Australians, typically supplementing their income from employment, superannuation and the pension.”

Australian households together hold more than $1.3 trillion in savings and deposit accounts.

As the cash rate target set by the Reserve Bank of Australia has increased from 0.1 per cent to 3.35 per cent, in most cases banks have fully passed through the cash rate target increases to their home loan interest rates.

However, the increases in interest rates on deposit products appear to have typically been smaller and less consistent.

In many cases, banks have only applied increases in the cash rate to some of their deposit products, often with conditions attached.

“We will also examine the extent to which consumers can benefit from shopping around and switching, and what other barriers are stopping consumers from seeking a better return on their savings,” Ms Cass-Gottlieb said.

In undertaking this inquiry, the ACCC will consult closely with financial regulators, including the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

The ACCC is expected to release an issues paper in the coming months, and is directed to report to the Treasurer by December 1, 2023.

Rare hot days during a mild summer

HOT MINUTE: It’s been a mild summer to date and the hot days of yesterday and today will be short lived.

A LOW-INTENSITY heatwave warning has been issued for North East Victoria over the next two days with today expected to be the worst, forecast to reach 39 degrees Celsius.

Temperature maximums yesterday nudged the high 30s, tomorrow the forecast is 34C high and 19C low, Sunday it’s 34C and 12C, Monday 35C and 13C, Tuesday 33C and 14C and Wednesday 32C and 13C. It’s been a mild summer to date with the average temperature for December in Wangaratta only 27.6C (1.7C below the long-term mean), and January averaged 31.5C (0.6 below the long-term mean).

February started off extremely mild, with the mercury only reaching a 17.3C maximum on February 3 and prior to yesterday the top day-time temperature for the month was just 33.6C last Saturday.

Severe heatwaves can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell.

Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.

Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.

If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool.

Distraction laws pin point driver safety NEW rules to limit driver distraction are set to come into effect across the state next month, amid soaring road trauma statistics to start the year.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne, recently announced the changes will be enacted from March 31, bringing Victorian regulations in line with Australian road rules with legislation to cover in-built vehicle systems, mounted devices, wearables and portable devices.

Under the new legislation, fully licenced drivers caught manually scrolling or inputting words or symbols on a mobile device or an in-built vehicle device could face

penalties of up to four demerit points and a $555 fine.

Individuals using a mounted mobile device or in-built system will be permitted to accept audio calls, use a navigation function or stream audio materials, as long the task does not involve scrolling or inputting text while driving.

Learner and probationary drivers can continue to use mounted mobile devices for navigation and music, but must pull over in order to change a song or enter a new address.

So far this year, 50 people have lost their lives on Victorian roads, 13 more than the same time last year.

Some 32 fatalities have occurred in regional Victoria so far this year.

According to Ms Horne, distraction was historically linked to 11 per cent of road fatalities, equating to around 20 avoidable deaths each year.

“Distraction is deadly - which is why we’re introducing these new road rules to protect the lives of Vicotrians,” she said.

“Everyone has a role to play in keeping our roads safe, so when you’re driving, please make the right choices - pay attention and don’t be distracted.”

New camera technology is also set to debut on Victorian roads in

the coming months, with the ability to detect drivers using mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts.

The artificial intelligence-enabled camera systems can capture high-resolution images of passing vehicles in all conditions, including poor weather and low light, when distracted driving is even more dangerous.

A three-month warning period is set to apply from the technology’s activation before drivers face infringement and demerit penalties.

Housing for youth a “game changer” GOTAFE has secured $13.3 million of State Government funding that will enable the beginning of works for the "game changing" Education First Youth Foyer build near its Wangaratta campus.

In collaboration with NESAY, Uniting Victoria and the Brotherhood of St Laurence, GOTAFE‘s new Wangaratta education foyer will combine affordable medium–term accommodation with education and training, empowering young people aged 15 to 24 at risk of homelessness to complete their studies and successfully transition from school into work.

While living at the youth foyer, young people will be supported to undertake education, training and employment to expand their capabilities.

The 40–room youth foyer will be situated right next to the GOTAFE‘s Docker Street campus, near the corner of Norton Street, to give residents easy access to the education site and the Wangaratta CBD. Northern Victoria MP Jaclyn Symes said at the official announce-

ment at GOTAFE on Wednesday, the youth foyer will provide opportunities for young people in the region they would never have had before.

“It’s so exciting, we are addressing a need that exists, there are so many young people living in housing they shouldn’t be, couch surfing, subjected to family violence or a range of issues,” Ms Symes said.

“It’s about responding to the underlying issues of generational vulnerabilities, having a safe house that has the support to enable young people to have an education and create opportunities and pathways for them.

“This is why not only is the foyer model a place to lay your head at night, it has support services in place for people who have probably not had the best start in life, the reason they are probably experiencing

homelessness is because their family life is not stable, it could be unsafe.

“For them to have the opportunity to get the support they need, get into education and break that cycle of generational disadvantage which is so common in a lot of regional areas, it’s a game changer."

Residents will be able to stay at the youth foyer for a maximum of two years, acting as a start of building independence skills before aiding students into the next stage of their lives and accepting new youth foyer residents.

GOTAFE chief executive officer Travis Heeney said with the youth foyer build in Wodonga also funded, it will provide the entire region with much sought after education and accommodation pathways for youth in the North East.

“If nothing else it’s about setting people up with just basic life skills..at the minimum that’s what we expect people to do, and we have people doing a diploma of nursing, bachelor degrees... and

we’ve got such a shortage in so many career paths,” he said.

“They don’t have to be sleeping in parks because they have nowhere else to go, they‘ll be prioritised and triaged in by experts and it‘s a game changer for those people.

“Those service providers are making sure post youth foyer that they’re set up well, and that’s what makes you really proud, when they move out and move into their own rental, it’s phenomenal.”

Mr Heeney said works to begin the build are “imminent” this year.

“We’ve got the site ready to go; and it’s expected construction to start in December this year,” he said.

“We’ve got the youth support from NESAY, we’ve got Uniting as a housing provider to make sure there’s opportunities for students after staying at the foyer and they’re also going to be in town so they can live their lives and enjoy everything the town has to offer.

“And on campus, the reality is they can study with us here and literally just walk back home.”

INDI independent MP Helen Haines successfully amended the government’s housing package bills to include better representation of regional, rural and remote Australia.

The package, which aims to build 30,000 social and affordable houses in its first five years, passed the House of Representatives on Thursday morning.

Dr Haines said housing remained a critical issues in Indi.

Her amendments to the bills creating the Housing Australia Future Fund and the National Housing Supply and Affordability Council to ensure housing in regional, rural and remote Australia is properly funded and considered, included: • Add an object of the Housing Australia Future Fund Act to provide a funding mechanism for the acute housing needs of Australians living in regional, rural and remote Australia, as well as include critical enabling infrastructure for new social and affordable housing in regional, rural and remote Australia; and • Ensure the needs of regional, rural and remote Australia are explicitly considered under the Bills.

Sarah Brindley, council director corporate and leisure, said currently of its 16,002 ratepayers, there are 141 with financial hardship arrangements in place and others have flexible payment terms set up to help with managing their cash flows.

“We encourage ratepayers experiencing difficulty paying their rates to reach out to council to talk through their options,” Ms Brindley said.

“We are also able to assist our ratepayers connect with free, confidential, independent financial advice.”

Beautification project underway for underpass

TRAFFIC has been slowed to 40kph around the Rowan Street underpass for much of this week, while painting work has been undertaken on the structure.

The works have this week required closure of the left lane of the underpass heading towards Wangaratta’s CBD, while a coat of white paint has been applied to the wall on that side.

community and infrastructure Marcus Goonan said the underpass was being painted as part of a joint “beautification project” between Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) and council.

He said RRV was funding the $100,000 works.

Painting works are expected to take two weeks, and once this stage of completing the single block colour is completed, Mr Goonan said council and RRV would look at next steps.

By SHANE DOUTHIE WHETHER you’re running the full marathon or just walking with the kids on the fun run/walk, rehydration will be essential at this year’s Wangaratta Marathon and Fun Run on Sunday, March 19.

One of the sponsors of this year’s event is North East Water (NEW) who are providing 200 refillable water bottles and also a water station, a large mobile water bubbler designed for major events such as this.

It will not only provide entrants and spectators a ready source of cool, refreshing water totally free, but it also spreads the important message about just how valuable tap water is to the community and

our environment.

Marni Jones, NEW general manager customers, community and culture, said there were many advantages of choosing tap water over bottled water including environmental, wellbeing and value benefits.

“By drinking tap water, it reduces the number of single use plastic bottles being used which means less plastic entering our rivers and oceans,” Ms Jones said.

“Around 80 per cent of plastic bottles end up as landfill or litter, and each bottle takes around 450 years to break down.

“During this process it creates micro plastics, which make their way into our food

and water supplies, harming our health and environment.

“By 2050, scientists predict there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish, which is quite alarming.”

Ms Jones said choosing tap water helps keep our bodies healthy and it’s the best source of hydration particularly in hot weather or when exercising.

“While tap water is PH neutral, some brands of bottled water have high acidity levels which can contribute to tooth decay,” she said.

“Bottled water is also classified as a packaged food and is not subjected to the same stringent quality testing as tap water.

“Tap water costs less than one cent per litre compared to over

$3 per litre for many bottled varieties, so for the same price you can refill a reusable drink bottle from the tap every day for over three years.”

Ms Jones said NEW wanted to get the ‘Choose Tap’ message out to as many people as possible, which is one of the reasons they’re again providing recycled, refillable drink bottles and their mobile bubbler unit to the 2023 Wangaratta Marathon.

“We believe tap water is the best alternative to bottled water, and we hope that everyone chooses tap during this year’s big event,” she said.

Support is out there

JANINE Stewart knows the value of spending time and sharing stories with those who have been through similar experiences.

With this in mind, the local resident said the development of support groups for those bereaved by suicide, through Wangaratta Area Suicide Prevention (WASP), had been a vital addition to the district in recent years.

After losing her 34-yearold son, Daniel, to suicide in May, 2020, Janine said she had searched the area for support groups designed for parents bereaved by suicide.

“I was living in Albury at the time, but could only find one in Melbourne which offered a regional Zoom session,” she said.

She said these online gatherings were a great lead-in to joining the WASP support groups, which she heard about via a newspaper article.

“The Zoom meetings helped a lot, and it’s been great since last year to meet with people face-to-face in these groups, which are very welcoming,” Janine said.

She said guidelines around confidentiality and behaviour within the group had helped create a safe space for sharing and remi-

“Family and friends have been the most amazing support, but I was struggling to keep moving forward. I wanted to meet with people who were on the same path, and listen to their stories, experiences

and feelings,” she said.

“Unless you’ve walked in those shoes, you don’t have a clue. You can tick along for days and weeks, and then one thing washes over you and you get stuck.

“I know there are people, including parents, out there in Wangaratta who have lost loved ones to suicide, and I

would like to help them.”

Janine said she relished the chance to speak about Daniel, who she described as a caring, kind, well-organised, bossy, talented theatre nurse who loved life, loved people and was extremely generous.

“I don’t ever want to not talk about Daniel; I want

him spoken about and talked about on a daily basis. He was my best friend,” she said.

“In the early stages, you can’t see a way forward, but I know there is still so much enjoyment in life, even though he’s not in it. Of course, you would love one more chance to talk to them

or give a hug, but i them th h b t you can’t do that.

“I would really love to be able to help a little bit with other parents, and to be with people who are on the same journey.”

Janine encouraged other local residents who have been bereaved by suicide to turn up to one of the groups and see whether it may be for them.

“Just come along and try, and see if it helps,” she said.

“You can reminisce and talk about things like birthdays and Christmas and special events, and get some great ideas about marking them, and find help with moving forward.”

The next sessions for the WASP support groups for those bereaved by suicide will be held on Wednesday, February 22.

The teal (morning) group meets from 9.30am to 11am, and the purple (evening) group from 7pm to 8.30pm in the community room at the Wangaratta Library.

The groups meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Wheels starting to turn for motor show in April

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN THE fourth bi-annual Wangaratta Historic Motor Show and Fly in is set to be bigger than ever this year as one of the most diverse displays of historic vehicles in Australia returns on Sunday, April 23 at the Wangaratta Airport from 9am.

Event organiser Richie Gardner said he expects between 6000 to 8000 people to be in attendance.

“As the show has progressed, the attendance and the number of people entering their vehicles have increased with each year, and I expect it will be the same this year,” he said.

The Historic Motor Show and Fly In attracts a wide variety of commercial vehicles, trucks, fire engines, ambulances, police cars, army transport, motorcycles, tractors and stationary engines from Victoria and interstate.

The other feature for the day includes a display of World War II planes with several stunning displays of these planes in action.

Mr Gardner said the preparations for the show are usually nonstop and coming off a COVID-19 restricted event in 2021, he has enjoyed more freedom with planning the event this year.

“As soon as the show finished in 2021, preparations for this one had begun,” he said.

“It’s essentially 18 months of preparing, with most of it being done

As an original co-founder of the event in 2017 with the Historic Commercial Vehicle Club Australia Northern Branch, Mr Gardner said the club saw a need to bring an inclusive, family friendly event to Wangaratta for everyone to enjoy.

“We wanted to give people the opportunity to forget the challenges we can face in life everyday by putting on a display where there’s things to do and see for everyone,” he said.

Mr Gardner and wife Bronwyn will be displaying numerous of their historic restored trucks, including their Loui 7000, a historic Brown Brothers vineyard truck found in a farmers shed.

Mr Gardner worked on the truck when he was an apprentice at age 17 and completed the resoration over a period of time with help from wife and friends.

The exhibitors will be treated to an auction night on the Saturday before the show, with all proceeds

planned to go towards Northeast Health Wangaratta and suicide awareness.

Prior to the event Sunday, one of the trees at the Wangaratta Airport will be painted blue to further raise suicide awareness and will be supported by the show and the Wangaratta Suicide Awareness committee.

The show will be open to the public from 9am on the Sunday at an admission fee of $25 and under 15s can enter for free.

Dr Kate Davey to speak at women’s breakfast in March RETIRED local GP Dr Kate Davey will be the guest speaker at the Wangaratta Women in Leadership Breakfast on Friday, March 10.

When Dr Kate Davey arrived in the North East in 1983 she was one of just two female GPs working in Wangaratta, and among only four in the wider region.

Along with Ely Street’s Elizabeth Perry, she quickly discovered there was an unmet need for female doctors in the area.

“Because I’ve always done on-call work, I saw a lot of men, as well as women who were seeking a female doctor, so I have a very diverse demographic of patients, and I still see the children of people I saw when they were children,” she told the Wangaratta Chronicle just before her retirement from Ovens Medical Group.

Dr Davey was associated with Ovens Medical Group since 1983, she is a fellow of RACGP and Melbourne Medical School Academy of Clinical Teaching.

She is the senior medical educator MCCC-NE GP Training and is a senior lecturer in General Practice with Melbourne University Rural Clinical School.

Dr Davey has particular interests in women’s and young person’s health as well as medical education.

Performing arts back to its best THIS year‘s performing arts program at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre is well placed to build on a return to form for the local theatre industry last year.

After several seasons were cut off at the legs by the COVID pandemic, it was back to its brilliant best last year with crowds flocking to the theatre.

When you consider that those working in the performing arts, due to the very nature of their jobs, were largely left out in the cold by the then Federal Government‘s support packages during the pandemic, we are blessed that so many have come through to return this year.

Like workers in a number of other industries, it was a matter of finding alternative means to survive with many switching careers to look for more security in the future.

The performing arts, professional and amateur, were also hit severely by crowd limits and while other entertainment activities such as sport were allowed earlier access to spectators both indoor and out, performing arts was one of the last to be allowed to operate again.

There is no doubt that has been the motivation for a number of the productions scheduled for this year at WPACC with more interaction between performers and audience with workshops from the 360 ALLSTARS, MSO for Kids; Making Mendelssohn, and the Australian Ballet Education and Outreach Team.

The schedule will also feature local performers of all ages in a variety of shows reflecting the creative spirit that beats strong in the rural city.

Woodchop events facing the axe A CENTURIES-old sport is at risk as the Andrews Labor Government continues to fail Victoria’s native timber industry.

Reports in recent weeks that the Victorian Axemen’s Council has no timber for upcoming woodchopping events mean Victorians will be unable to compete at agricultural shows around the state.

A court order limiting harvesting in areas managed by VicForests means the council won’t have enough logs for Victoria’s more than 100 woodchopping events.

The government needs to guarantee the future of the sport.

Woodchopping has a long history in the North East and continues to grow year on year.

The Wangaratta Sports Carnival and Myrtleford Show run very competitive woodchopping competitions each year, that draw axemen from all over Victoria and interstate.

It would be a shame to lose that from great country events.

Local axemen associations, including the North East and Border Axemen’s Association do a terrific job, volunteering their time to help add to the various events throughout the North East.

It is a shame to see the Andrews Labor Government’s inaction on finding a solution for the ongoing situation.

Woodchopping is a major drawcard around the state and a sport that attracts international attention.

The Nationals have raised this issue in Parliament, and we want to see a solution to what has become a bizarre situation.

Gas appliance removal gives false hope HELEN Haines now tells us she has thrown in her lot with the Greens, voters take note, and is going to support their push to have all gas appliances removed from homes and presumably commercial premises.

She claims this will save us money as gas is expensive.

We all know the main reason for higher gas prices is government interference, namely restricting the production of gas thus causing these higher prices.

The elephant in the room with this push to electricity, is the actual supply of electricity.

We know that we are currently having problems with supply, which is not likely to improve in the immediate future.

Shave for the brave

SOUTH Wangaratta Medical Centre will be braving the shave next month as their team of doctors, patients and family members participate in the World's Greatest Shave on March 15.

The shave will take place at the clinic and so far there are 10 members of the South Wangaratta Medical Centre team who will either be shaving or colouring their hair to raise money for The Leukaemia Foundation.

Pharmacist GP Kim Ching came up with the idea of forming the ‘Shave for the Brave’ team when she was in conversation with clinic cleaner Helen Finney, who had participated in the World's Greatest Shave previously.

‘It’s important to raise awareness and also shaving the hair, especially for people including my children, to help explain to them that these diseases probably mean people lose their hair, so shaving your hair is a part of raising funds, raising awareness, learning about the impacts of the disease on the individual itself,” she said.

According to the Leukaemia Foundation, 53 Aussies are diagnosed with blood

cancer every day, and 16 will lose their life.

Ms Ching said she is looking forward to offering the event to the community, where she encourages anyone wanting to get involved with either shaving or colouring their hair on the day to get involved, like her young 10 year old son and seven year old daughter.

“My boy is excited about it, my daughter was a bit unsure at first but when I explained to her about leukemia and how it can affect kids and she’s actually starting to tell people including the junior school principal about shaving her hair,” she said.

Ms Ching said she hopes to raise up to $5000 for the The Leukemia Foundation, and the team has already reached $1530 in donations.

The South Wangaratta Medical Centre is planning on many fundraising activities in the lead up to the shaving day such as an auction ballot in the clinic and a raffle.

It’s time to celebrate staying at home over a cuppa and cake NORA Evans is never happier than sitting in the backyard of her Wangaratta home having a cuppa and listening to the call of the currawongs in the gum trees.

The 92-year-old, who has her doctorate in microbiology and a prestigious academic career spanning years of lecturing and research, moved here six years ago after falling in love with this beautiful part of Victoria.

“I don’t tell anyone I’m Dr Evans though,” Nora laughs.

“I’m scared they’ll say to me ‘won’t you just check out what’s wrong with my big toe?’”

Nora is one of the growing number of people in the area on a Home Care Package through Uniting AgeWell, who started delivering services in the region 12 months ago.

Nora opts to receive domestic assistance including gardening and some transport and looks forward to her visits from Uniting AgeWell staff.

“They’re more like friends than carers,” Nora said.

“I’m just so happy to be in my home that I love.”

Uniting AgeWell program manager for the Hume region Emma Williamson understands only too well the pull Nora feels to the area.

Emma is part of the heartbeat of the region.

She owns a farm, was the first woman president of the Wangaratta Agricultural Show and volunteers with the CFA. “There are huge differences between delivering home care in the country and the city,” Emma explained.

“For starters, there’s the distances we travel and the recent devastating floods.

“We experience bushfires and there are kangaroos and wombats on the roads. But we’re here for our clients, through thick and thin.”

Uniting AgeWell delivers home care and respite services to people living across many localities in Victoria’s North East and is actively growing its services.

“There are great opportunities to join our dynamic and caring team and to live and work locally,” Emma said.

THE Wangaratta Black Dog ride is coming back for another year of touring the North East by motorcycle, in order to raise awareness around mental health and suicide prevention.

On Sunday, March 19, riders will be venturing from Apex Park in Wangaratta at 10am through to Moyhu and Benalla, before making their way back in time for lunch in an effort to encourage community members to address their mental health.

Kurt Dissegna, who is organising the Wangaratta ride, said he hopes to build on the success of last year’s ride, which saw 240 participants raise funds against ‘the black dog’.

“We’ve got a pretty cracker ride planned and all my groupies are ready to go out and do as good a job as we do every other year,” he said.

“It deserves the support it gets and we need to do more because it’s increasing, not decreasing.”

Mr Dissegna said every bit of support towards the ride goes a long way to fighting suicide prevention.

“It means a lot to me because as we all know it’s not getting any better, it’s getting worse if anything and you never know

MORE than $1.6m in new bushfire recovery funding has been awarded to projects within Indi electorate communities impacted by the Black Summer bushfires in 2019/20.

As part of the initiative, Totally Renewable Yackandandah (TRY) will receive $276,543 for the Yackandandah Emergency Readiness project, which will improve resilience and provide additional community services by improving maintenance of power supplies during emergencies and disruptions.

The third and final round of the Local Community Projects Grants scheme was jointly funded by state and federal governments as part of a focus on disaster recovery, with local funding also set to benefit communities in Porepunkah, Myrtleford, Corryong and both Towong and Alpine shires.

“These projects will continue the recovery effort in communities affected by the Black Summer bushfires, covering community recreation and sport, digital support for businesses and energy resilience during future emergencies,” Independent Indi MP, Helen Haines, said.

“I was proud to support some of these projects through letters of support, and I look forward to seeing the changes all of these projects will make to their towns.

“Bushfire recovery takes a long time and it’s important that government continue to support these communities over time.”

The Indi region has received more than $121m in government funding since the Black Summer bushfires.

“Because everyone pulls up at a spot, we all look at each other’s bikes and someone might say ‘that’s a nice bike

THE 2023 season of the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre will be all about having fun with a light-hearted feel according to venue manager Tanya Camplin.

Ms Camplin was speaking at the season launch held last week in the Alpine MDF Theatre to a large crowd of theatre devotees and special guests.

“Whether through song, movement or spoken word, storytelling that challenges, inspires, and connects our community is at the heart of this year’s program,” she said.

“After the speed bumps of the last two years we’re putting our foot down on the pedal and heading towards that light at the end of the tunnel - a great big season of awesome shows.

“We know theatre can do many things, but in current times we need theatre to entertain us.

“We promise you moments of wild surprise, radical hope, intriguing gentleness, bliss, joy, spiritual wonder and the warmth of being with a community of people who all love sharing great stories.”

Ms Camplin said 2022 brought with it plenty of

optimism and the return of 100 per cent seating capacity which enabled WPACC to welcome audiences back to the theatre.

“And back to the theatre they came craving the live entertainment and theatre experiences they’d missed during lockdowns and restrictions,” she said.

“We sold a record 29,703 tickets to 122 shows from February to December last year - which is almost 7000 more tickets than our blockbuster 2019 season.

“Last year’s program was a culmination of 2020 and 2021 rescheduled and cancelled shows alongside some new 2022 works.

“We were also lucky to experience some major Aussie artists wanting to tour close to home including Paul Kelly, Human Nature, Amy Shark and Xavier Rudd who all graced the WPACC stage.”

The venue also provided support to the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz & Blues as they hosted their first live festival since 2018 and welcomed back many community groups, primary and secondary schools, dance schools and local choir, drama and orchestra groups.

Ms Camplin said the 2023 programming offered

a range of meaningful engagement activities for the community.

The Children and Families program will include popular children’s literature leaping from the page, to the stage, with favourite books Mr Stink, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Twits and The Gruffalo’s Child all brought to life before our eyes.

Mr Stink will be at WPACC for a week while they finalise their technical plans, dress rehearsals and develop their promotional suite, providing a unique ‘behind the scenes’ experience.

International smash 360 ALLSTARS will bring BMX, basketball, breakdancing, acrobatics and drumming to the stage, with the performers sharing their skills with the community with a series of workshops.

Young audiences will explore Mendelssohn’s Symphony No 4 with a highly interactive concert MSO for Kids; Making Mendelssohn.

The Australian Ballet education and outreach team returns for a range of community and school programs in late February and March, exploring the world of ballet as well as learning about elements such as

costume design, music and storytelling through dance.

WPACC will also provide a free afternoon concert of Romeo & Juliet.

The Matinee Series commences with Melbourne Chamber Orchestra presenting Inspirations featuring Sophie Rowell leading a three string quartet.

‘I Love Paris’ stars Australia’s fastest rising and award winning concert pianist, William Schmidt and iInternational soprano, Alison Jones in a show brimming with famous music inspired by the most magical city in the world.

The Beggars sing The Seekers follows The Seekers Story from the Melbourne cafe scene in 1962 to London, the swinging centre of the pop universe, through to their 1968 BBC TV special Farewell The Seekers, watched by millions.

The program finishes with a Double Feature by Damian Callinan on a cinematic, romantic romp through post-war Melbourne.

However, her diary poses more questions than it does answers.

Main Stage programming includes an afternoon of jazz in an intimate concert

with one of Australia’s most talented and versatile jazz musicians - James Morrison who will be joined on stage with his trio including sons Harry Morrison (bass), William Morrison (guitar) and Patrick Danao (drums).

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow drops in as does WERK IT by Circus Trick Tease in an all-new, latenight, high-energy, acrobatic comedy romp celebrating spandex, high-vis, vitality and vigour.

Blurring the boundaries of theatre and cinema, innovative new work COIL draws on our collective memories to pay tribute to the glory days of the video store and the communities we made within them.

Opera Australia presents The Barber of Seville, Rossini’s most famous ‘opera buffa’ is a musical masterpiece with a storyline that would be equally at home in a Hollywood rom-com.

The season concludes with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra when it returns in October presenting a powerful program featuring an evening of sparkling Mendelssohn and powerful Mozart with Cybec Assistant Conductor Carlo Antonioli.

Ms Camplin said it was also very exciting to welcome back many community groups, primary and secondary schools, dance schools and touring artists to the Alpine MDF Theatre including Wangaratta Players Inc with their production of the Australian musical ‘Ladies in Black’ with words and music by Tim Finn based on the bestselling book by Madeline St John.

“We are so proud to have a venue where everyone can experience the excitement of a nationally acclaimed production, hear the richness of a symphony orchestra and see world class performers and entertainers one night and then watch their own child or grandchild overcome their fears and join their classmates on stage for a school concert or dance recital the next,” she said.

Peter’s passion for maths recognised

By SIMONE KERWIN A WANGARATTA High School teacher will spend this year involved in the State Government’s Teaching Excellence Program, focusing even more closely on his passion for teaching maths.

Peter Breukers, who has been a teacher for 11 years and has worked at the high school since 2019, is among a select group of maths teachers from across Victoria chosen to take part in the program.

The year-long professional learning experience is designed to allow highly-skilled teachers to extend their capacity, and caters for a total of 500 teachers from government, Catholic and independent schools across the sectors of maths, English, humanities, science, technologies, health and physical education, languages and the arts.

Run by the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership, it is open to teachers with a minimum of three years’ teaching experience, with participants engaging in a range of learning activities - from conferences to masterclasses and elective workshops.

Silvereye, an epic traveller for its size

THE Silvereye is one of our smallest native birds with a conspicuous ring of white feathers around the eye, giving this species its name.

They are commonly found throughout our region in the warmer months in our natural woodlands, parks and gardens.

Silvereyes are more common in the south-east of Australia, but their range extends from Cape York in Queensland, through to Victoria in the south and south-west to about Shark Bay in Western Australia.

They are also found in Tasmania.

In the southern part of their range, Silvereyes move north each autumn, and move back south in late winter to breed.

The Silvereye’s plumage varies across its range in Australia with the grey back and olive-green head and wings as shown in the photo found in birds through the east.

Western birds have a uniformly olive-green back and breeding birds of the east coast have yellow throats, pale buff sides and white on the undertail. Tasmanian birds have grey throats, chestnut flanks and yellow on the undertail.

To complicate this, the birds in the east (birds in our region) have regular migrations within Australia and may replace each other in

their different areas for parts of the year.

These migrations may span vast distances including from Tasmania to Queensland, quite a feat for a bird weighing just over 10 grams and only 10-12cm in size.

Silvereyes may occur in almost any wooded habitat, especially commercial orchards and urban parks and gardens, where they feed on insect prey and large amounts of fruit and nectar.

This can make them occasional pests of commercial orchards.

Birds are seen alone, in pairs or small flocks during the breeding season, but form large flocks in the winter months.

Silvereye pairs actively defend a small territory.

The nest is a small, neatly woven cup of grasses, hair, and other fine vegetation, bound with spider web.

It is placed in a horizontal tree fork up to 5m above the ground.

The nest is constructed by both sexes, who both also incubate the bluish-green eggs.

If conditions are suitable two to three clutches will be raised in a season.

Next time you see a small bird or hear a thin persistent “psip” call among the leaves or flowers in your veggie garden or at a park take a closer look.

It’s likely to be a Silvereye feeding on insects like aphids or on the flowering nectar.

Powerful messages in the layers of Joel’s multimedia artworks

By ANITA McPHERSON A COLLECTION of 14 paintings and mixed media works which incorporate detritus collected from Wangaratta’s own streets to illustrate serious stories, are on display at the Art Gallery on Ovens.

The exhibition Damage in Society is being presented by local artist Joel Stevens this weekend and Joel said he hopes to open people’s eyes to issues relating to destructive elements in our society like war, greed, corruption and the misuse of power.

Joel said he’s used objects such as discarded coke cans, cigarette packets, dolls and printed paraphernalia including discarded books in his multi-layered collages.

He also used old shoes he wore for six months every day so he could get the feel of what it was like to be homeless - something he experienced for nine months as a teenager.

“One of my paintings is about cancer, which my grandmother died from,” he said.

“Everyone who knows about cancer will identify with it - she has yellow skin and no hair and is looking very sick -

“There is one about homelessness (with a number on it for anyone experiencing a problem) and another is about litter - I like to pick stuff up off the streets because you are then recycling it.”

Joel said while some of

these artworks date back to 2019, he keeps adding to them and changing them even starting all over again - if the mood takes him.

He said he always liked drawing as a child - initially encouraged by his grandmother on his mother’s side

While full time work meant art became Joel’s hobby for a number of years he continued making collages

and still creates every day.

Joel said he’s pleased to see the way the exhibition has come together, saying it is very colourful, including one work which expresses his acceptance of sexual diversity in our society.

Region’s leaders up-skill to address local issues

By STEVE KELLY TWO people who work at two major local employers have taken on the Leading Australian Resilient Communities pilot program that aims to up-skill current and emerging leaders in the region.

They were part of a 20-strong Rivers to Plains cohort who learned more about local issues such as mental health and social media impact on youth; youth engagement and education; bridging the country-city divide especially digital connectivity; and lifestyle security focusing on housing, food and water.

Sally Hughes, who works

at the Rural City of Wangaratta as a waste education officer, learned how she could harness her skills to support volunteer groups and also how to value add to her role at council.

She said participating in the pilot leadership program was a great learning experience.

“My main interest in the program came from a desire to increase resilience in my local community,” she said.

“During the program we were placed into groups where we identified a local challenge.

“Our group explored food security, food networks and good governance.”

LEADERS: Rural City of Wangaratta’s Sally Hughes (right) joined the others in the River to Plains region cohort as she graduated from a Leading Australian Resilient Communities pilot program last Friday.

Ms Hughes said there are many grass roots groups doing amazing projects in this space and sometimes they experience difficulties because they lack a good governance structure.

She said the group identified that governance training is sometimes overlooked.

“As president of the Corowa Community Garden getting governance training for our committee improved the way we can look after our volunteers and has allowed our group to flourish,” she said.

The skills Ms Hughes learned in this leadership program will also add value

to her role with Rural City of Wangaratta.

She said in the waste education officer role she is fortunate to engage with a diverse range of community members from pre-schoolers to seniors.

“I am particularly passionate about the role of young people as future leaders and am excited to be engaging with the Wangaratta Youth Advisory Group on some great projects,” she said.

“I believe we can reduce waste and empower people to ‘do more with less’.

“I recommend the LARC program to anyone interested in growing their leader-

ship skills for the benefit of their community.”

Kelly Tapiloas is part of Gateway Health’s Community Recovery and Resilience Program - AgSector Support team and is currently completing the program.

“I initially expressed my interest in this program to learn more about the challenges within our communities and ways we can work collaboratively to address issues such as housing, health and mental health and access to services as a cross-border community,” she said.

“We have an amazing cohort of emerging leaders with a genuine interest in

making positive changes in our communities.

“There is a focus on a range of challenges including the country-city divide (especially digital connectivity), lifestyle security related to housing, food and water, mental health, social media impact on youth and youth engagement.

“I would recommend this program to anyone interested in making change and connections within our communities.”

The program was co-designed and delivered by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation (ARLF) and Regional Australia Institute (RAI).

Native fish comeback

STOCKS of native fish in local waterways continue to improve while numbers of their greatest threat, the European carp, are dwindling.

The latest population survey by the Arthur Rylah Institute has shown how stable the native fish numbers have been, even after the extreme flooding experienced in the region according to local fish expert and member of Wangaratta Landcare and Sustainability, Kelvin Berry.

“There were only five carp among the 32 native fish that were counted which was a relief after all the flooding,” Mr Berry said.

“In the areas we have removed the carp we noticed the native fish have returned.”

Mr Berry said fish species registered during the survey included Macquarie Perch, Black Fish, Trout Cod, Murray Cod and Golden Perch.

The survey was carried out on the Mitta, Kiewa, Ovens, King and Goulburn rivers with the Electro Fishing Unit (EFU) which has carried out its operations across the whole of Victoria for the last 10 years as part of a Murray Darling Basin Association fish research project.

The latest releases were downstream of Maloney’s Creek with 5500 near the Whorouly Bridge and 10,000 at the Buffalo River near Abbeyard.

There was two years planning in the release including allocation of the fingerlings, then breeding and delivery to the sites.

The Australian Education Union (AEU) also voted to continue with its ban on overtime, a political campaign in Coalition seats, and reaffirmed its objection to performance pay.

A contingent of local teachers made the trip to Melbourne’s Hisense Arena in their fight for better wages

and the “future of public education”.

They’re after a new pay deal that would have Victorian teachers - the second lowest paid nationally - get higher wages.

As part of the new enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) they want a pay increase of 3.5, 3.75, and 4.5 per cent over three years.

She said the half day work stoppages will continue the fight to get better wages and secure the future of public education.

“The mood at the rally was vibrant and exciting with everyone wearing

red and people with banners feeling united in what they stand for,” Ms Dews told the Chronicle while at the march.

“We don’t take it lightly that students miss out on a day of school, but rallies like today and the

planned half day work stoppages will continue until the union and government agree on a better, fairer EBA.” The financial side of the strike action weighs heavily and Ms Dews said they want quality teachers in the Victorian system.

However, she said when a teacher at the top end of the scale can get $5000 more per annum by driving over the NSW border to teach, this is in jeopardy.

“We are also fully opposed to performance pay because teaching is based on team work,” she said.

“This segregates teachers and attempts to individualise teaching efforts through NAPLAN score results.

“But how can you determine which teacher gets any given student to a certain stage of learning?

By BRODIE EVERIST B RESIDENTS of Bright and surrounds are calling on the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) to retain their Bright branch on Gavan Street following the bank’s announcement that its closure will be postponed.

On Monday the bank announced it would postpone the closure of the Bright branch following a request from a Senate standing committee to pause regional branch closures until the end of 2023.

The CBA said the Bright branch closure followed a review which showed “customer demand” had dropped with almost 50 per cent less transactions in the five years before the pandemic.

Bright resident and long– time CBA customer Hilly Hart said she welcomed the postponed closure and it was a chance for locals to keep pressuring the bank to keep the Bright branch open.

“At the moment it’s just an extension of a lifeline,” she said.

“We’re still sitting here on tenterhooks.”

When the bank initially announced the closure of the branch Ms Hart said she was shocked and particularly concerned for elderly town residents that may prefer face–to–face service or have limited transport.

“They don’t have transport, and they can‘t go to Mount Beauty, they can’t go

Wandiligong resident Jurgen Henschke said he received a letter informing him of the closure from the CBA on Thursday, and he called the bank’s area manager in Bendigo to complain.

there, who are very helpful,” he said.

“We probably had to do that maybe once every three months.”

Mr Henschke said with the rise of internet scamming he felt it was irresponsible for the bank to encourage internet and phone banking.

“We’re being told on the news nearly every day that the most unsecure way to do banking is over the phone – it‘s open to

scammers everywhere,” he said.

Mr Henschke also feels the bank has not taken account of Bright‘s status as a tourist destination.

“We may be a town of only 3000 people, but unlike most small towns we are probably 20,000 during school holidays, long weekends, and public holidays, when we‘ve got a lot of tourists that are also Commonwealth Bank customers,” he said.

School zone speeder five times over alcohol limit A FEMALE motorist who was caught allegedly speeding through a Myrtleford school crossing last Wednesday recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.26, according to Myrtleford police.

Leading Constable Anthony Short said the motorist was detected by police driving through the crossing at around 8:55am.

After being intercepted by police the 31–year–old driver recorded a positive preliminary breath test.

Const Short said she was taken to the police station and recorded an evidentiary breath test of 0.26.

“As a result of the woman‘s actions, she‘s been served with an immediate suspension of driver‘s licence, her car was impounded for a month and she‘s to face court at a later date,” he said.

Const Short said the Myrtleford police will continue to monitor school crossings in an effort to keep them safe.

Mt Buffalo Chalet cafe interest fails to pass EOI tests

PLANS to establish a cafe at the Mount Buffalo Chalet have hit another obstacle with no suitable submissions received since April last year.

The Alpine community was waiting with bated breath to learn the future of hospitality in the famed chalet, after the period for interested parties to lodge expressions of interest for cafe operations officially closed on April 15.

The tender, offered by Parks Victoria, was for a year–long operator to create an engaging and sustainable cafe operation in the front rooms of the chalet, which has laid dormant since the 2006/07 bushfires ravaged the region.

Parks Victoria executive director of visitor experience Lisa Patroni said they completed assessment of applications received.

“Unfortunately none of

the applications met the full EOI assessment criteria and therefore no proponent has been appointed,” she said.

Landslide won’t be cleared from road by March

MAJOR Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) have said the Bogong High Plains Road will not be accessible by March.

According to the department, they have informed stakeholders, including the Falls Creek Management Board, that due to the size and complexity of the landslide the road won’t be accessible by March.

The landslide, which ocurred is October, continues to hamper any public access to Falls Creek.

“Our engineers are currently working through the staging for the recovery effort so that we can prepare for the busy 2023 snow season,” MRPV program director Dipal Sorathia said.

“We’re also working through the methodology to make the Bogong High Plains Road safe for long–term operation, which is a hugely complex engineering task.”

MAJOR Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) has taken over the clearing of the Bogong landslide from the Department of Transport and Planning.

According to the MRPV, they will complete the remainder of the works due to experience in major earthworks and delivery of complex infrastructure projects.

MRPV‘s engineering experts and its construction partner Whelans have mobilised to ensure this work can be undertaken as swiftly and safely as possible, the department said.

MRPV is responsible for many road upgrades across Victoria and is one of five project teams in the Victorian Government’s Major Transport Infrastructure Authority.

The department has said the landslide is approximately 100 metres wide, 70 metres high and is still moving.

According to the department, the ongoing movement of the landslip, together with unseasonably high summer rainfall, earth tremors and a secondary crack at the top of the slip makes the removal of debris slow.

The department has said work to identify the long– term solution and the asso-

ciated construction methodology is still being finalised.

Large scale data sets have been taken to form the overall picture, and they are complimented by monitoring sensors that have been set up across the face of the landslip to continuously check for further changes and ensure the safety of the crews.

In December Department of Transport regional director Steve Bowmaker said the landslide was due to be cleared for single–lane access by March.

It can be both a time of mourning and education Indigenous residents reflect on future dates for Australia Day

By BRODIE EVERIST WHILE the Alpine Shire Council celebrated new citizens and handed out awards on Australia Day, Dhudhuroa man Jida Gulpilil was doing a cultural heritage survey for the Hotham to Falls trail.

But deciding to work on the public holiday wasn’t necessarily a protest against the date.

“I believe that we can both celebrate, and mourn during that time,” he said.

“Use that time to learn about the true history, the truth telling of our people‘s history and this country’s history.”

Other indigenous people in the shire are less equivocal than Mr Gulpilil about changing the date of Australia Day celebrations, but he hopes the day can be transformed into a powerful recognition of this country’s history.

“We don’t have to get that complicated,” Mr Gulpilil said, when asked about changing the date of Australia Day. “Maybe let’s just change the way that we use the day, so in the morning let’s mourn and do the smoking ceremonies, the healing, the cleanses, and talk about the history and the dark past as the sun comes up.

Mr Gulpilil, who is the chairperson of Dhudhuroa Traditional Owner group Dalka Warra Mittung, said First Nations culture is based around learning, sharing, caring and loving.

“It’s doing that through language, history, sharing knowledge, going out to country,” he said.

“We think that when we do come together and celebrate, those are the things that we should be celebrating because it grounds us and it connects us to the country.”

On January 26 Gamilaroi woman Lee Couch helped hold a healing ceremony at Myrtleford’s Apex Park.

The Myrtleford resident was emphatic about changing the date of Australia Day celebrations, but also recognised the date‘s role as a point of education for non–Indigenous Australians.

“We don’t celebrate Anzac Day,” she said.

“Why should we do that around the 26th?

“The trauma that that we go through is absolutely real and it’s magnified on a day

like the 26th of January.”

The Alpine Shire’s current Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), which was recently noted by council at their January meeting, has no plans to change the date of Australia Day celebrations.

According to the ‘Respect’ section of the plan, they will develop a culturally sensitive approach to acknowledge January 26, in consultation with Traditional Owners, First Nations communities in the Alpine Shire, and key stakeholders.

Council aims to have developed this approach by January 2024.

Bright to get public EV charger by July A PUBLIC electric vehicle (EV) charger will be installed in Bright by July this year.

According to council, the charger will be located in 12 Wills Street, in the carpark across the road from the rear of the IGA supermarket and the Bright Library.

Alpine Shire mayor John Forsyth said the charger will be the first publicly accessible fast charger, compatible with all EV brands, in the municipality.

“The installation of this charger in Bright is in line with council‘s commitment to supporting the community to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

“It also supports the Victorian Government‘s target of 50 per cent of all new light vehicles sales to be zero emissions vehicles by 2030.

“Not only will it boost the number of EV drivers stopping in Bright to recharge and explore the town, it puts the whole Alpine Shire on the map for EV owners.

“It‘s also great motivation for our locals to make the choice to move to an EV.” EV charger company Evie Networks received funding last year from the Victorian Government‘s Destination Charging Across Victoria Program to install 50kW DC fast chargers at 55 sites across Victoria, with one charger in Bright.

According to council, they worked with the company to find a suitable location that was close to the town centre yet minimised disruptions to parking.

TOYOTA COROLLA CROSS ATMOS HYBRID FWD

■ PRICED RIGHT: Heir apparent . . . the Corolla Cross could replace the long serving hatch and sedan in the long run.

By CHRIS RILEY YOU could in all likelihood be looking at the successor to the evergreen Corolla hatch and sedan as the market continues its move away from traditional styles.

Corolla Cross joins the Yaris Cross, C-HR, RAV4, Kluger, Fortuner, Land Cruiser Prado and Land Cruiser 300 Series in Toyota’s ever-growing lineup of SUVs. And, like many of the aforementioned models, it is available with a fuel saving hybrid petrol-electric powertrain - one that importantly recharges itself.

It’s the right-size and the timing couldn’t be better, but it’s going to cost you almost $5000 more to get into one and there’s sure to be a long wait. But hey?

STYLING Looking much like a smaller version of the RAV4, there’s three versions from which to choose: GX, GXL and Atmos.

There’s also petrol or hybrid powertrains, and frontor all-wheel drive, with pricing starting from $33,000 plus on-roads for the frontdrive, petrol-powered GX. For $2500 more you can have the same car with a fuelsaving hybrid.

AWD is another $3000, but available only with GXL and Atmos.

GX comes with 17-inch alloys, LED head and taillights, automatic high beam, daytime running lights as well as heated auto folding door mirrors. Inside, you’ll find cloth trim, single-zone climate air, smart entry and start, an electric park brake and a 7.0-inch driver information display.

GXL, priced from $36,750,

adds combination leather and fabric upholstery, dualzone climate, leather-accented shift knob and steering wheel, auto dimming rear view mirror, better LED headlights, front fog lights, roof rails and rear privacy glass.

To this Atmos, priced from $46,050, adds 18-inch alloys, panoramic sunroof and a power-operated tailgate.

There’s also leather-accented upholstery, heated seats and steering wheel, eight-way power-adjust driver seat, fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster, Nanoe X air filtering, illuminated entry and a wireless phone charger.

Corolla Cross is covered by a 5-year unlimited kilometre warranty, extending to seven-years on engine and driveline, with capped-price servicing for the first five years or 75,000km.

Each 12-month/15,000km service is pegged at $230.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS While the 1.8-litre setup in the hatch puts out 103kW, the Cross with a larger 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle engine and an electric motor for the front axle, delivers a combined 146kW of power at 6600 revs.

SAFETY Corolla Cross gets a full five stars for safety.

With eight airbags and a reversing camera, Autonomous emergency braking (Car-toCar, Vulnerable Road User, Junction Assist and Backover), a lane support system with lane-keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW) and emergency lane keeping (ELK) and an advanced speed assistance system (SAS) are standard on all versions.

INFOTAINMENT Infotainment consists of an 8.0-inch touchscreen, with voice control, Bluetooth, AM/ FM/DAB+ digital radio, wireless Apple CarPlay but wired Android Auto and six-speaker audio -- but alas no navigation.

DRIVING Having driven hundreds of Toyotas over the years breeds a certain familiarity.

Getting into the Corolla Cross for the first time, it all feels, looks and even smells the same - at once familiar but different.

The cabin looks like Marie Kondo has paid a visit.

The fit out is not quite spartan, but the emphasis is clearly on functionality and practicality.

It’s all there - but with nothing to spare.

In fact, it reminds me of the old joke that if Toyota could find a way to charge for the air in tyres - it would do so (apologies).

There’s also a certain sameness to the way the Cross drives.

The feel and sound of the hybrid powertrain is straight out of the Prius playbook.

Cross sits on the same platform as the Corolla hatch, along with the C-HR and Lexus UX, but gets a larger, more powerful hybrid in recognition of the extra size and weight that it carries - 120kg more than the petrol version.

At 4460mm in length, Cross is 85mm longer than the hatch, but 170mm shorter than the sedan.

The cabin is a roomy and pleasant environment, but rear legroom is limited, at least sitting behind my 183cm frame.

Headroom getting in and

out of the back is also challenging, thanks to a receding roofline and raised seat height.

The cargo area is a good size though, with 414 litres of space behind the rear seat in front drive models -- 380 litres in the all-wheel drive.

The space saver in the allwheel drive is replaced by a tyre repair kit to make room for the second electric motor.

The CVT in the hybrid misses out on a sequential or manual change mode in petrol versions, but comes with three drive modes: Normal, Eco and Power. They alter throttle response, engine load and transmission response.

The dash from 0 to 100km/h takes a brisk 7.7 seconds in the front-drive version.

In power mode, performance is surprisingly sharp, but you still need to wind it up in preparation for overtaking.

But why, one might ask, do you have to keep switching to power mode to access satisfying performance.

Why isn’t this simply the default mode?

If you answered economy, why then is there an Eco mode?

Steering is accurate and well-weighted and the ride is firm without becoming uncomfortable, but it does become a bit bouncy at speed.

Handling is confident for an SUV, up to the point where the higher centre of gravity starts to generate some body roll, but the average driver is unlikely to find that point.

The brakes are excellent, consistently pulling the car up quickly after repeated hard braking.

We were getting 5.2L after more than 300km.

This is a little higher than expected when a Camry hybrid will return 4.6 without any effort.

Interestingly, the 2.0-litre petrol Cross is good for a not unattractive 6.0L/100km.

Cross produces 97g/km of CO2.

SUMMING UP It feels a bit underdone, but we like it.

Corolla sells on price and value.

The Corolla Cross ticks

one of those boxes.

A top of the range hybrid hatch is $37,620.

Our top of the range, twowheel drive Atmos is $46,050 - a whopping $8430 more.

Atmos is the pick. We wouldn’t worry about allwheel drive which doesn’t warrant the extra $3000.

The real breaker, however, is that you can get into a larger front-drive RAV4 Hybrid XSE for $46,375 - yes, just $325 more?

WANGARATTA High School year 12 graduates Kayla Fisher and Amy Henderson were among hundreds of local students, and tens of thousands around the state, who received their first round university offers yesterday.

The pair are both interested in humanitarian work and development, and were offered their first choice course at their chosen universities.

Kayla, 17, has been offered a

double degree in Arts and Public Policy with a major in third-world development at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“I was happy with my ATAR score even if I thought I could do better but it’s been a tough year,” Kayla said.

“It was difficult not having feedback from classmates because I didn’t know if I was doing okay or needed to improve.

“But, I got there in the end and am

looking forward to the next step.”

On Wednesday morning Joan Guttorsen and Terry Wilson came from behind to defeat Lauren Kazenwadel 20/18 in a game of ricochet croquet.

During the game, Lauren played several excellent placement strokes to put her ball directly in front of the hoop, while Terry Wilson managed a four hoop break and a twenty four yard roquet.

After the Australian Croquet Association Presidents Eights Tournament in Melbourne last weekend, former Wangaratta Croquet Club member Shane Downie is ranked number two in Victoria and number ten in Australia.

A fantastic effort after commencing croquet three and a half years ago.

Although both teams were out of contention for the finals a good contest was expected.

After a slow start Milawa gradually got on top and bowled very well to run out winners by 28 shots.

WARBY WALKERS Wednesday, February 8 Beechworth Waters Walk 13 enthusiastic starters met at the Lake Sambell bbq area just after 9am, with a warm to hot day predicted.

We ambled along Silver

Creek on the right bank for a km towards the Silver Creek Caravan Park, before heading back on the left bank and then skirting the Lake Sambell Caravan Park back down to the lakeside.

The eastern side of the lake has suffered some damage during the recent big rains but we managed to navigate around the taped off steep sections to emerge into the Chinese Gardens.

Then we followed the track alongside Silver Creek down to the bridge at the start of the gorge, before walking the right bank of the creek back to Camp St and then the west side of the lake to where we had parked cars.

After 7kms of varied walking, we once again enjoyed Pat’s now famous cuppa with fresh biscuits and even an olive flavoured dip.

Penultimate A grade round shaping as a thriller

By NATHAN de VRIES AS the cricket season begins its journey towards finals in earnest, the race for a top four spot is heating up, with a number of clubs set to make their case.

Just two matches of two day cricket remain in the A grade before finals, which means time is running out for some sides to break into a qualifying position.

Rovers United Bruck (96.79 points) and Wangaratta Magpies (94.63 points) lead the pack and have already secured a finals berth, but for Yarrawonga Mulwala (77.31), Ovens Valley United (71.46) and Beechworth Wanderers (70.00), the next two matches are crucial.

City Colts (55.96), Benalla Bushrangers (51.29) and Delatite (49.38) are out of the running.

Ovens Valley United take on Beechworth at McNamara Reserve tomorrow, with the winner one step closer to the title.

The last time these two teams went head to head was in a 40-over showdown at Baarmutha Park in Beechworth, with the Tigers prov-

ing better on the day.

The Wanderers’ experience with both bat and ball will be a challenge for Ovens Valley United, but with the Tigers’ gun all-round import Harkaran Mann in the squad, the match has all the hallmarks of one for the ages.

In other matches, the Magpies will be at home to an ever-improving City Colts outfit, determined to upset the reigning one-day premiers.

Benalla Bushrangers will aim to throw a spanner in the race for a finals berth when they host Yarrawonga Mulwala at the Gardens Oval.

If the Bushies scalp a win over the Lakers, it could very well upset Yarrawonga’s chance to go all the way this year.

Rovers United Bruck will be at home at the WJ Findlay Oval for the first time since December 10 against the bottom of the ladder Delatite.

Delatite will be fired up to take down the ladder leaders, and will play with confidence following a stunning win over Ovens Valley United last weekend.

Tough challenge awaits City Colts

CITY Colts will be up against it when they face the in-form and freshly crowned one-day champions Wangaratta Magpies this weekend.

The Magpies are arguably favourites to take out this year’s WDCA A grade crown but for the young City Colts side this weekend shapes as a chance to learn from the best.

The Colts haven’t had the season they’ve been wanting, recording just two victories, but with two games left they’ll be looking to end the

Despite the challenge, City Colts leader Kent Braden is looking forward to the confrontation.

“They’re a good side and they’ve had a great year so far,” Braden said.

“We’re probably out of finals contention unless something miraculous happens so for us it’s just about improv-

ing and working on things.

“Hopefully, over the last two rounds, we can build some momentum going into next season.”

Braden admitted his young group will have their work cut out for them.

“I think we’ll find a lot out about our young guys this weekend,” he said.

“It’ll be a good chance to play the best and see where we’re at.

“We fell down in a few places last weekend but I think since we were bowled out for 77 a few weeks ago

we’ve been improving.”

The Magpies have plenty of threats with top order batter Pranav Menon in top form after making 227 runs from the first four games of Country Week during the week.

“Hopefully’s ‘Prav’s’ (Menon) a bit tired from his big week at Country Week,” Braden joked.

“They’re a good side stacked with good batters and bowlers so we’ll have out work cut out for us.

“It’ll be a good challenge though.”

Braden is hopeful his side can find some more runs than in previous weeks.

“We probably have been lacking two or three more scores of 20, 30 or 40, it’s been the case all year,” he said.

“Hopefully, a couple more can get going this weekend and we can find one that goes onto 70 or 80.

“I think our young group has just been struggling with two day cricket and because of COVID they probably haven’t played a lot of it.”

Although the Colts have

struggled this season, Braden still believes his group is on the right track.

“We’ve got a good group of young players so player retention is going to be important over the next few years,” he said.

“The Nanson boys are going from strength to strength and then we have guys like Archie Crispin who will only improve in coming years.

“We’re really promoting the youth and it may not be working too well now but I’m sure we’ll reap the benefits in the coming years.”

Wangaratta Dragons Hockey Club fighting off the dark

By NATHAN de VRIES AS the long winter nights of the Hockey Albury Wodonga season draws ever nearer, Wangaratta Dragons Hockey Club needs your help to keep the lights on.

After losing a major sponsor, the Dragons are left without a facility with lights to conduct training during the dark winter months.

While they can currently still host games at Cathedral College during the day, the lack of a location for midweek training has sent the club into top gear, eager to find a solution.

Their first plan is to install some temporary lights at the Cathedral College fields, but the Dragons will need to raise up to $20,000 to make this a reality.

Dragons’ president Daniel Warner said the club set up a GoFundMe page and some other smaller fundraisers because they had all but ran out of options.

“Obviously with hockey being a winter sport, once daylight savings changes it’s a little bit dark a little bit earlier in the evening to be running around without lights,” he said.

“GoFundMe was basically the last option we had - we have spoken to Tim McCurdy last week and he was going to get together with the council and try to come up with a solution for this winter, somewhere we could train where there might already be lights.

“But we’ve got a fair bit of local knowledge and experience on our committee and we’re running out of options for what we can do and where we can go.”

The club will hold two sausage sizzles at Wangaratta Bunnings tomorrow and Sunday, March 5 in order to raise as much money as they can before it’s too late.

Warner said he didn’t know what would happen if the club can’t raise enough funds.

“To be honest, I’m not quite sure and I don’t want to think about it, but it’s not good,” he said.

“If we can’t train, we’re going to have to work out alternative training options and the club will suffer.

“People come to play hockey, and if we’re not playing hockey and all we’re doing is some alternative training somewhere else, it’s not what people come to the club for.”

Surrey brings up his 200th for Beechworth in a crucial match for the Wanderers against Ovens Valley United this weekend, with the winner to jump to fourth and put themselves in the box seat for finals with one round to go.

“I think at the start of the year no one would’ve thought we’d be in this position, even ourselves we were thinking we would struggle a bit,” he said.

“I’m hoping for a bit of luck to be honest, I think last week we weren’t far off, myself and Kayde had a mix up and we were going really nicely before that and a couple of other games we’ve just missed out by half a dozen runs or one wicket.”

“In saying that you’ve got to create your own luck, we can bowl and bat well to give ourselves a chance, and the top two is a fair way out in front but the rest is a relatively close competition which is great.”

Dragons’ hockey clinics prove a rousing success for all

WANGARATTA Dragons Hockey Club is now better equipped to tackle the upcoming season, following a pair of successful coaching and umpiring clinics held over the weekend.

A coaching clinic, held on Saturday, and an umpiring clinic run on Sunday, were both made possible through funding secured through Independent Member for Indi Helen Haines, who stopped by on the weekend to see how the clinics were faring.

The coaching clinic was led by legend of Australian hockey Aaron Hopkins, who drove down from Canberra to impart his knowledge to the Dragons.

Hopkins’ resume speaks for itself - with more than 200 games for the Kookaburras under his belt, as well as two Commonwealth gold medals, he was an ideal teacher to help shape the Dragons’ coaches.

Sunday’s session revolved around teaching attendees about the finer details of umpiring hockey, with Jay Blamey from Hockey ACT leading the session.

Dragons’ president Daniel Warner said the two clinics were

invaluable to making sure the club could have its best season ever.

“They were a big hit - we had nine in for the coaching clinic on Saturday and there were 18 there for the umpiring clinic on Sunday,” he said.

“It was really good to see - something we’ve struggled with in the past is getting umpires to our umpiring clinics, so it was good to see so many people there.

“Jay (Blamey) was really good to deal with, and from the reports I got he was great in the classroom and great on the field, giving direction and clarifying rules and regulations for hockey, and Aaron Hopkins on Saturday was absolutely amazing.

“Helen dropped by on Saturday morning, it was good to chat with her, she was excited by the clinics we were running.

“It’s good to have the support of Helen Haines, Cathedral College and the support from Hockey Albury Wodonga as well.”

Perfect Country Week continues

THE Wangaratta and District Cricket Association has put the rest of their Country Week opposition on notice, following some comprehensive wins in Melbourne this week.

Following their 80-run victory on Monday, the WDCA kept their winning ways going, downing South West CA by 162 runs on Tuesday and Bellarine Peninsula CA by three wickets with 15 overs in hand on Wednesday.

The WDCA won the toss and batted first against South West CA, making a whopping 3/321 on the back off a magnificent 130* from Harkaran Mann.

Opener Koot Pienaar was finding boundaries early, smashing 48 from just 28 deliveries including six fours and a pair of sixes.

Mann and skipper Pranav Menon (76) batted beautifully in partnership, rotating the strike and going after loose deliveries to take the score from 2/87 after 11 overs to 3/269 in the 45th, a partnership worth 182 runs.

A handy knock of 19 runs from Dylan Bursill set South West CA a foreboding challenge of 3/321 from 50 overs.

Brady Bartlett picked up the first wicket of Simon Harkness for just two runs.

Josh Nanson scored the next two wickets while the WDCA only conceded 40 runs, with South West scrambling at 3/72.

Opener Tharindu Rukshan kept plugging away with the runs, making 72 before he edged one from Menon right into Cooper Matheson’s gloves.

The required run rate kept creeping up, as the South West middle order collapsed, losing wicket after wicket to finish their 50 overs 9/159.

Brady Bartlett was unstoppable, claiming 3/13 from his nine overs, while Menon (2/25), Nanson (2/31) and Pienaar (2/35) got among the wickets.

Wednesday’s game against Bellarine Peninsula was a departure from the previous two, with WDCA losing the toss and sent into the field.

Bellarine’s openers Simon Umbers (43 from 77 balls) and Nathan Fyre (25 from 60 balls) took their time and

kept the new ball from Brady Bartlett and Paddy McNamara out, getting their side to 65 runs before Josh Nanson got the breakthrough.

Luke Edwards and Jasper George combined for an 82-run partnership before some quick glove-work from Matheson stumped Edwards - Matheson would claim another stumping after Menon got one to rip to Edward Morrison (44 from 48 balls).

WDCA kept Bellarine to 219 runs, and opening pair Matheson (32 from 28 balls) and Pienaar (77 off 40 deliveries) got stuck into the chase early, belting 121 runs from the first 10 overs.

A collapse threatened to sink their innings after Matheson and Tyler Nanson were dismissed in successive balls, with Menon run out for just 19.

Jacob Beattie, Matt Whitten and Dylan Bursill all failed to crack into double figures, but the steady hands of Nick Pell (24*) and Fraser Ellis (21*) steered the side across the finish line in the 35th over.

Quality weekend of racing ahead for Ben Brisbourne

By WILLSON MACK LEADING Wangaratta trainer Ben Brisbourne has a busy weekend ahead.

Brisbourne will have runners at Wagga, Moonee Valley and Flemington across today and tomorrow in what shapes as a huge weekend for the stable.

Oceans Of Stamina will be in action at Wagga, Suparazi and Pachino both look like genuine chances at Moonee Valley tonight, and Storm King and Hell Queen will feature at Flemington.

Despite the talented Suparazi’s ($7.50) last start seventh, the exciting galloper has drawn well in race three (BM70 over 1600M) and will engage an apprentice claim of 3kg (59kg) when Hannah Edgley pilots.

“Suparazi should be good enough,” Brisbourne said.

“His last run wasn’t that bad, he had a big weight and the race lacked a bit of pace which didn’t allow him to spring home.

“He seems well so we’ll try a mile and hopefully he can run a good race.”

Pachino ($5.50) has shown he’s up to city grade with solid runs at Flemington and Sandown this preparation and looks like one of the main chances in race six, benchmark 64 (2500m).

“Pachino’s had a super prep,” he said.

“He’s done as well as anyone and we get him back to benchmark 64 grade over 2500.

“She gets well in the weight as well so I think she’ll be a strong chance.”

Brisbourne will then have two runners on deck at Flemington for Lightning Stakes Day. The impressive Storm King ($31) will resume from a spell in race one (bm84 over 1600m), followed by the promising Hell Queen ($23) in the $175,000 two-year-old Talindert Stakes (1100m).

Hell Queen has shown great signs from her first two starts, finishing third in her last start in the group three Ottawa Stakes behind Charm Stone last November.

“We’re using this race for Storm King as a lead up to the Wangaratta Cup,” Brisbourne said.

“A mile first up probably isn’t the go for him but we’re just looking for a good firstup run before the Wangaratta Cup. “Hell Queen is already group placed and she’s got experience down the Flemington straight which will hold her in good stead.

“She’s prepped well and is looking to improve so we’re hopeful she’s a genuine chance.”

But Brisbourne said Oceans Of Stamina at Wagga today in race four, the Tom Patton Cup (BM66 over 1800m) is his best of the weekend.

“Oceans Of Stamina is well handicapped and was unlucky last start so he’s my best of the weekend,” he said.

O&M interleague venue decided THE SS&A Ovens and Murray Football Netball have locked in a host venue in preparation for their interleague clash with the GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League on Saturday, May 20.

With several O&M clubs expressing interest in hosting the fixture, the Albury Sportsground was selected as the preferred venue to showcase the best collection of football and netball talent at an O&M venue for the first time in five years.

Apart from having one of the best playing facilities in the region, the Tigers home base allows convenient walking dis-

tance to both accommodation and the Albury CBD, allowing supporters of both competitions great scope to attend the fixture.

The O&M board are also delighted to confirm the re-appointment of Damian Sexton (seniors) and Tom McGrath (under 18s) as head coach of their respective football programs, on the back of leading successful campaigns against the GVL last season at Mooroopna.

A further announcement regarding the O&M Interleague Open and 17 and Under netball coaching appointments will follow once finalised.

SS&A OMFNL chair David Sinclair was pleased to announce the venue as well as coaches.

“It was great to see people back at interleague at Mooroopna last season, and as a league we are excited for our opportunity to play host to the GVL for the coveted Ash-Wilson trophy in our own backyard,” Sinclair said.

“We are also delighted to have our football coaches committed so early, with both Damian and Tom looking to maintain their winning records from last year.

“We are confident all parameters are in place for a great spectacle at the

Albury Sportsground, with the level of talent that will be on display in both football and netball not seen in our region for many years.”

GOTAFE GVL chair Jacqui Hudgson is looking forward to playing in Albury.

“The GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League is looking forward to renewing the rivalries between our two leagues in both football and netball,” Hudgson said.

“After the successful return of interleague last year, we look forward to seeing a strong contingent of GVL spectators in Albury on May 20 supporting our representative players.”

Vescio lends a hand at Rovers training THE Wangaratta Rovers Female Football Club has been lifting the intensity on their pre-season training over the last few weeks.

At Monday night’s training session, special guest Darcy Vescio attended training to help out with drills and have a chat with the players.

The players were thrilled to have a current AFLW player at training and lifted the intensity.

Darcy, a local from Markwood, has played AFLW for Carlton since 2017.

Darcy was able to give the players some insights on shutting down key forwards and drill ideas for getting better at ground ball pick-ups.

Darcy’s advice and easy humour was well received by all ages and they are more than welcome at the Rovers anytime.

The new coach of the open team Kathryn Burns and assistant coach Ollie Morton Rodaro have been working hard on a training program with drills that focus on skills as well

as fitness as they aim to build a team that will make their first grand final this season.

The opens are currently getting ready for their first practice match on March 18 against Diamond Creek Women’s Football Club in Wangaratta.

All ages are still welcome to join the club - pre-season training is on Mondays at 6pm at Barr 2 Oval and Thursdays at 6pm at the WJ Findlay Oval.

Tarrawingee golf stalwarts honoured with life memberships ON Saturday, February 11, the Tarrawingee Golf Club held their presentation night to award the winners of the club championships and other major events for the 2022 season.

Before the presentations began, the club announced two of their members, Angelo Garraffo and Leo McCoy, would be honoured for their contribution to the Tarrawingee Golf Club for more than 30 years by being awarded life memberships.

Garraffo has been a member since 1983, and from 1985 he has played a monumental part in the success of the Tarrawingee men’s pennant team winning 16 flags, and continues to play today.

He served as president

for five years, and two terms as captain for an incredible total of 16 years so far.

Garraffo was vice captain in 1994 and 1997, was on the match committee in 1991’92, and has been a member since 2005.

He was a strong advocate for the successful Thursday twilight mixed golf and donated the perpetual trophy.

Garraffo is a club delegate to the NEDGA since at least 2005 and continues to hold that position today.

McCoy joined the club in 1990 and became a member of the pennant committee in 1992 - since then, he was made an outstanding contribution, undertaking responsibilities in a vast array of positions.

His involvement with the

pennant side began around 1992 and he has been a member playing over the years in 15 of their 16 pennant flags.

McCoy then became club president in 2012 and, as the role of secretary became vacant in 2013, was nominated for the position which he still holds today.

He held the position of club captain for 11 years and vice-captain position for many years, which he is to this day.

McCoy has been a match and pennant committee member continuously since 1992, was the men’s handicapper for 12 years and a club delegate to the NEDGA since 2005.

He currently holds the position of public officer

and publicity officer, and is a member of the bar committee involved in the purchasing and delivery of refreshment supplies.

More recently, McCoy is a member of the greens committee, contributing countless hours of mowing and any other maintenance of the course.

The club congratulated both Angelo and Leo, thanks them for their contributions over many years, and were proud to award them life memberships of the Tarrawingee Golf Club.

He currently holds the position of public officer and publicity officer, and is a member of the bar committee involved in the purchasing and delivery of refreshment supplies.

Surrey said as his cricket has progressed, he has tak-

en pride in witnessing the growth of players such as Kayde Surrey, Matt Ryan, Matt Hunt and Alessandro Belci within Beechworth cricket, after being mentored in his early days by former A grade cricketers such as Brendon Thompson.

“Early on in my career I wouldn’t say I was individual minded but I really demanded a lot more out of myself and took on responsibility,

now it’s giving a lot of the other guys an opportunity to establish themselves,” he said.

“Throughout the journey there are definitely kids you grab at 15 or 16 you want to help out and not just them but others in the club.

“The noticeable outcomes especially in the A grade have been establishing them and I think they’ve all proven to be good quality players and go onto bigger

and better things, whether that’s Western Australian grade cricket or Melbourne grade cricket it’s really good to see.”

The wicket-keeper batsman boasts a career average of 34.71, a highest score of 158 runs and a total of five centuries, including one in a grand final.

Surrey said he has relished the opportunity to take up roles such as the captain-

cy and helping the development of players in the team, and enjoys his cricket most when coming through under pressure.

“There’s a responsibility week in week out that keeps you going, people say Beechworth are only built around a couple of main guys, well they’re still struggling to get them couple of guys out,” he said.
