THE city’s social housing options will improve with the Victorian Minister for Planning’s approval of a 44unit development at Wangaratta’s Templeton Street. Construction of a $18.3 million four storey (ground floor to level three) social housing development will begin as early as March 2023 and will take about 18 months to complete.

Wangaratta council approved the permit last February, but an application to appeal the decision was lodged with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal delaying the project.

The case was then remitted back to council by VCAT and Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny approved the planning scheme amendment, signalling the green light for the development to go ahead. The building will consist of 44 units that will be a mix of one, two and three bedrooms which will help address a dire shortage of affordable hous-

ing in Wangaratta. It is close to the central business district and there will be 20 car parks provided for renters, along with parking spaces for 40 bicycles.
