Dean Woods’ own words help hundreds celebrate his life CYCLING stars mingled with local sporting identities, residents and dignitaries to join Olympian Dean Woods’ family and friends in a final farewell for the champion cyclist in Wangaratta yesterday. The two-hour ceremony at the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre saw about 350 people ushered into the main theatre, where Dean’s casket - draped in an Olympic flag - took centre stage for what was indeed a celebration of his life. It began with vision of the 1984 Olympic team pursuit final between Australia and the United States being beamed onto a large screen on stage, including commentary which proclaimed Dean “the 18-year-old wonder-boy from Wangaratta”. Just as the city did 38 years ago when the race was run, the hometown crowd applauded the involvement of the curly-haired ‘baby’ of the team. One of Dean’s great mates, Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Dean Rees, acted as master of ceremonies for the service, first introducing a video eulogy prepared

The Olympic star told his audience, “I’ve had a pretty extraordinary life, and it’s pretty hard for anyone to document that in a simple form, so the best person to do it is me.” Dean’s eulogy showcased a man at peace with his life, his impending departure from this world, and his immense pleasure at all it had offered him. He was also keenly aware that the tough times came equally with the triumphs and successes in his sporting life and beyond - including battles with throat cancer five years ago, and more recently lung cancer. “I’ve never once said, ‘Why me, why me?’ If I won $50 million in Lotto, would I be saying, ‘Why me, why me?’ Absolutely not. You take the good with the bad,” he said. “I owe a massive amount of what I know to high performance sport. ■ Continued page 2
