Building together CONSTRUCTION is well under way on the first stage of a masterplan aimed at maximising the use of space across two Appin Street school campuses. The works are the result of $5.235 million in State Government funding delivered to Appin Park Primary School and Wangaratta District Specialist School (WDSS) in mid-2020, to progress the masterplan on which

they agreed in December, 2019 to guide future development of their facilities. The funding was provided as part of the State Government’s Building

Works package, which was aimed at stimulating Victoria’s economy amid the first effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initial works on the Appin Park campus involved refurbishment of classrooms into an administrative and staff breakout space for Appin Park Primary, and refurbishment of another

building which is being shared by WDSS and Appin Park students. The current works, which are expected to be completed by October, cover construction of a new building on the Appin Park site which will be used by WDSS staff and students, and a new sports court area for Appin Park Primary at the rear of

existing buildings. Appin Park Primary School principal Fiona Carson said there could be scope for community sporting groups to make use of this new court, which will also feature fencing and lighting, following its completion. Alysha Jackson, WDSS acting principal, said it was encouraging to see

construction work taking place on the site. “It’s exciting; it’s been a long time coming,” she said. Ms Jackson said the specialist school was at full capacity, and eagerly awaiting the purpose-built facilities. “This building will mean six classes we can take out of our existing rooms. ■ Continued page 2
