NHW director of redevelopment, David Ford, said local builders Zauner Construction were well on the way to delivering the $22.9m completed expan-

sion of the hospital by Christmas.

“We’re in the process of the building of the medical and the paediatric wing, the structure is very much underway and we hope for that to be finished about November,” he said yesterday.

“The next part of ED (emergency department) is well underway as well - the slab’s been poured, the structural steel is up and the roof is being put

up (yesterday) and the next part is some work being done on the maternity ward which is just a refurbishment of that.”

The new paediatric ward will accompany 11 additional medical beds to create two 20-bed inpatient units, following the successful completion and opening of a 12-bed intensive care unit and eight-bed short stay unit in the last nine months.

Victorian Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas was on hand for the official opening of the new ICU and short-stay units yesterday, touring facilities which now include negative pressure rooms to manage patients who have tested positive for COVID. She said the redevelopments would allow staff to provide more urgent care and reduce wait times throughout the hospital.

“Our healthcare staff do an outstanding job - and a bigger and better Wangaratta hospital will ensure that they have access to the best facilities and can continue to provide the best care to the community,” Ms Thomas said.

“One of the things I was immediately struck by is how dedicated the team is obviously despite all of the challenges, this is a great place to work.

Contaminators beware Rural cityy council aims to cut contamination costs with harsher banning gp policyy

By STEVE KELLY RESIDENTS who get caught placing incorrect waste in their kerbside bins four times in four years will have their bin removed but they will still have to pay charges under a new contamination rule.

The Rural City of Wangaratta Council adopted its waste services policy earlier this month with this being the major change to its previous version.

Earlier, people who received four contamination notices in one calendar year would have their bin confiscated, but council has now extended the timeframe by four to lessen the impact of repeat offenders.

The policy states that with a first offence the garbage, organics or recycling bin will not be collected and will receive either a contamination sticker or letter which also contains education material.

But if they offend four times, the garbage, organics or recycling bin will be removed and the waste charge will remain.

A letter will be sent to the resident advising them, that in order to reinstate their bin they are required to provide a letter to council stating that they will use the bin correctly and only place accepted materials in their bin.

The bonus for ratepayers regarding their $5 transfer station ticket will be pro-

vided again this year to ease the cost of waste disposal and the policy says it's the landlord’s choice whether or not to pass on the voucher to tenants.

The draft waste services policy was out for public consultation for 28 days and only one submission was received by council on the voucher topic.

Council’s 2022/23 budget was also adopted at the June council meeting and it showed an average waste

charge increase of six per cent.

Kerbside waste charges fund both the current operational requirements of collection and disposal of waste, including State Government levies, in addition to future capital works and rehabilitation of landfill facilities.

Council continues to apply an additional $15 rebate for those eligible for the pensioner rates concession for a total cost to

council of about $45,000.

This support is continued from previous years in consideration of the increased cost of recycling service charges following the recycling reform.

A question from the gallery at the meeting quizzed council about the proposed fourth bin intended for glass recycling, but council foresees the next policy review to take place prior to decisions being made on this topic.

Nature not the cause of Rowan Street waterfall THE closure of Rowan Street on Tuesday afternoon due to flooding was nothing knew, but the waterfall cascading onto the road certainly was.

As it happened the sudden heavy downpour from the sky above was not to blame.

It seems it was from a burst water main.

Steve Bowmaker, regional director (Hume), Department of Transport, said department crews responded quickly to reports of flooding along Rowan Street, caused by a main water supply pipe failure at an upstream location on the road.

“After we completed a full assessment, crews assisted with safely managing traffic and ensured that our pumps were operating at full capacity to help reduce water levels across the road,” he said.

Homelessness approach welcomes state leader

By RYAN MALCOLM THE founder of a statewide homelessness network has lauded the efforts of the Wangaratta Night Shelter, after spending the night inside the community at the weekend.

Stable One Network founder Jenny Willetts was the night shelter's special guest on Sunday, detailing the growth of the homelessness network to Wangaratta volunteers before spending the night assisting with operations and caring for the shelter’s

singular guest.

While the shelter usually cares for up to 12 people at a time, Ms Willetts said the foundation of the network, which now oversees six active night shelters (including Wangaratta) throughout Victoria and Queensland, had been built on the importance of providing care and support for even one person.

“That’s why there’s a one in our name,” she said.

“It’s good to be able to visit and encourage the people there because they’re doing a great job.

“It’s bigger than just a project that helps people experiencing homelessness - you sit around the table and see community happening.

“There are lots of minor points of theology we might disagree about, but we all agree it’s important to care for our neighbour.

“I left at 8am on Monday morning - I was so glad that he (the shelter’s guest) was inside and I was out - how cool that he got a nice sleep in a nice warm place.”

Now operating for the fourth consecutive year,

the Wangaratta Night Shelter has continued to go from strength to strength, buoyed by an increase in community support both locally and from nearby townships.

Having spent much of her life in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Ms Willetts said regional townships were often more aware of individuals at risk of homelessness than their metropolitan counterparts.

“Where we live, it’s very unseen in our area - there’s loads of people living in

cars and couch surfing,” she said.

“In some regional towns homelessness is a bit more visible - if they’ve got a river you’ll often see people.

“You only have to turn on the news to know housing affordability is a big issue.

“Regional towns are already slightly better at doing community - in a town like Wang you’re going to bump into people in town. “(A night shelter) is such a practical way for communities to make an actual difference.”

By BELINDA HARRISON B WANGARATTA couple Karen and David Ritchens are celebrating a one in a million event with their three-year-old First Cross Dorset/ Merino ewe Mary giving birth to quintuplets last Saturday.

The odds of a ewe producing five live lambs is extremely rare, as is all of them surviving afterwards, however Daisy, Rosie, Bob, and Fred are all healthy and enjoying the frosty winter mornings, sunny days and the rain on the farm.

One of the lambs (Tammy) was lost on Tuesday with Karen believing that Mary may have laid down on her and she didn’t survive.

“I have helped ewes with their births many times right from when I was a child and I have also raised their lamb when things went wrong for the ewe so experience helps, but they don't all make it all the time,” Karen said.

“This is only Mary’s second lambing after she had a single lamb last year and we certainly weren’t expecting anything more than twins this time.

“The ram had been with four separate ewes but must have concentrated all his efforts on this one as the others haven’t had any lambs yet,” Karen laughed.

“But we’ll just have to wait and see - this is the largest surviving lambing we’ve had so maybe it’s just the start.”

The momentous event began late last Saturday afternoon when Karen and Dave arrived home to

healthy. find d a pair i off twins t i up and dh lth “About half an hour later we looked out to see another lamb there, and then another followed about five minutes later,” Karen said.

“We took them into the stable for the night to protect them from the cold and headed out to visit our daughter and her family.

“We got home again about an hour and a half later at 7.30pm and went to check on the lambs and Mary and we found a fifth lamb.

“It was tiny and not looking good at all so we took it into the house for the night and worked hard to keep her alive.”

Their love, attention and care paid off and by morning she was up and ready to go back to her mum and siblings.

“Mary took her back, which is incredible - they don’t usually want them after they’ve been away that long, so we’re really happy about that,” said Karen.

Karen and Dave are supplement feeding the babies on bottles, however Mary seems to be keen to feed all of them and has plenty of milk.

“She is such a good mum to them all and we are giving her supplements to make sure she is healthy as well as her babies,” Karen said.

“It’s a pity we couldn’t be the one in a million lotto winner, but we are so thankful to be celebrating this one in a million occurrence and look forward to watching the lambs grow.”

Bail after shotgun scare

A WANGARATTA teenager who was located in possession of a sawn-off shotgun with which he threatened to commit self harm has been granted bail following a promise to seek mental health treatment in Canberra.

The 18-year-old appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates Court flanked by custody officers on Monday, following his arrest in the early hours of Friday morning after he fled an address in an alleged ‘drug-induced delusional state’ around 5:30am.

Defendant in an alleged g ‘drug-induced g delusional state’ Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Stuart Pritchard said police were called to a Wangaratta address, searching the backyard for the man before locating the firearm near the rear door of the premises.

A number of shotgun pellets were also found within the home’s main bedroom, the back seat of the accused’s vehicle.

LSC Pritchard said police were concerned about the accused’s association with

drugs, which also saw him charged and bailed earlier this year after being found in possession of 93.4 grams of cannabis while driving erratically on his learner’s permit.

He said police were unsure of how he came into possession of the firearm and ammunition, and expressed concerns over the potential he may be able to source further weapons in the future.

The accused was in

possession of a ticket to visit his father in Canberra at the time of his arrest, an idea defence counsel Geoff Clancy endorsed, expressing a desire to separate his client from his associates in Wangaratta.

The accused’s father, appearing via telephone, said he had enquired about the availability of mental health counselling programs in the Canberra area in the event his son were bailed to his address, and

did not harbour concerns around his own safety.

“I believe in the right place a lot of those issues would be eliminated,” he told the court.

He said his son had spent time working with him in the nation’s capital, but had returned to Wangaratta and got caught up with the wrong crowd in recent times.

“He’s either going to end up in front of your honour again or we’re going to be going to a funeral,” he said of

Future looks bright for our schools’ space connection

By SIMONE KERWIN IT will be no surprise if the North East contributes strongly to Australia’s future space workforce, considering the region’s performance in last week’s International SpaceCRAFT Exploration Challenge.

About 160 students from across the world were involved in the competition, including 15 from Wangaratta, Bright and Tallangatta who were supported by the Wangaratta-based Digital Technology Advisory Committee to take part, via the Federal Government’s Sponsorship Grants for Student Science Engagement and International Competitions scheme.

A further 40 students from Albury-Wodonga took part in the competition via Scots School Albury - meaning a

third of the competitors in the global event hailed from the North East.

One of the DTAC-sponsored teams, LightBreaker GCC22 (comprising Galen Catholic College students Ethan PerryHeyden and Gō Ashby, and Wangaratta West Primary School student Remy Staley), performed well to finish third among 34 teams in the global challenge’s high school division, and 10th overall, while Scots School Albury was the overall winner of the middle school competition.

Ethan said the challenge was an amazing experience: “I can show my creativity and knowledge and put it to use.”

He said he enjoyed having a new, difficult, fun challenge each day, and watching real people who have knowledge or have worked in space or on the program.

lege student Hamish Kerr, who was also among the local students sponsored by DTAC, said he felt lucky to have the opportunity to participate in the challenge.

“I have enjoyed working with students from all over the world and listening to the guest speakers,” he said.

“I found astronaut Terry Virts’ presentation on human space flight mission most interesting.”

Galen Catholic College teachers Maree Timms and Brett Webber supervised some of the students in the team working from the school’s campus last week, spending Monday to Friday, and then Saturday for presentations, at school during the second week of the holidays.

Their dedication was on show as they supervised and cheered on the youngsters’ efforts.

A WANGARATTA man found asleep in a stolen vehicle earlier this year has been sentenced to five months in prison after pleading guilty to a slew of theft and criminal damage charges.

The 30-year-old appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates Court via WebeX from custody at Marngoneet Correctional Centre earlier this week, after he was arrested on March 22 when he was spotted in Coburg in a stolen vehicle exhibiting stolen plates, which he initially claimed had been sold to him by a friend for $100 the previous day.

A deal bag of methylamphetamine was also found on his person.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Stuart Pritchard told the court the accused was also arrested and bailed late last year after chasing a vehicle to a Cribbes Road address after the driver allegedly followed the accused’s cousin home.

He said the accused verbally abused the owner of the home and pounded on the windows of the premises, before kicking and denting a vehicle parked in the driveway causing up to $1500 worth of damage.

The accused was also said to have orchestrated at least three thefts from vehicles parked in Melbourne underground carparks in late 2020, before stealing a pair of Coach handbags valued at just shy of $2000 from a designer store with the assistance of an accomplice.

Defence counsel Geoff Clancy said his client had spent 110 days in custody, and would need to avoid travelling to Melbourne upon his release in order to shake a persistent drug habit.

“He decided to go down to Melbourne for a weekend and got straight back into his bad habits,” he told the court.

“The link between him and drugs is that he’s got to stay away from Melbourne.

“I don’t know of a time where h’s caught the train home from Melbourne - he gets the train down and gets remanded.”

Mr Clancy said a verbal offer of employment set to begin in Tasmania in October had been tabled, with Magistrate Peter Dunn acknowledging a five month prison sentence would see him released well in advance.

“He’s just got to stay away from the drugs - he’s wasting his life away in prison,” he said.

Artists’ opportunity to create major public art

THE Rural City of Wangaratta is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified artists or groups of artists to develop artworks specifically intended to provide a sense of arrival to the King Valley ‘Prosecco Road’ tourism trail.

The opportunity has been launched and artists both local and further afield are being asked to consider their proposals.

Council says the two commissions will help to “integrate a sense of arrival, location and brand awareness” and will also assist the visitor economy and connection throughout the King Valley wine regions townships and tourism offerings.

Cr Harry Bussell said the artworks will be highly visible, must fulfil the criteria of beautifying the space and be site specific.

“These are unique opportunities where council turns to our creative minds and artists to help us create the unthinkable - we are looking for landmark artworks that signpost to our visitors that they are entering into some of the most beautiful valleys across the nation,” he said.

“These valleys produce some of the highest quality wines and produce and provide our visitors with trails, bushland and beauty to explore.”

All applications in response to the expression of interest will be assessed by council's Public Art Acquisition Committee which follows the Australian standards of best practice in commissioning and delivering public art.

GOTAFE appoints former minister as chair of the board FORMER Labor Minister Candy Broad has been appointed chair of the GOTAFE board.

Ms Broad takes the helm from Diana Taylor, who had been chair since August 2019.

Deputy chair, Angela Verde, also stepped down after six years of service.

Ms Broad brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Appointed to the GOTAFE board in September 2021, she holds a Bachelor of Commerce and is a graduate of the Institute of Company Directors and the Institute of Superannuation Trustees and is an experienced company director.

Ms Broad was a Victorian Government Minister for seven years, with a total of 15 years of parliamentary experience.

“I am looking forward to being a strong ambassador and champion for GOTAFE and vocational education across regional Victoria,” she said.

“We are extremely lucky to have a wonderful panel of committee members who share a wealth of knowledge that expands over many years,” Lexi said.

“Primarily you will see Bec and myself running the workshops each week with the occasional appearance of Jo, Gillian and Hailey.

“We are all working collaboratively in the background to form the weekly workshops and construct big future plans including specialist workshops, holiday programs, Q & A sessions with experienced members of the Wangaratta Players, excursions, plays and performances.

“The best is yet to come and we have so many exciting plans.”

The involvement from the members of the committee will contribute to the children’s progression, as they can draw from their different, but expansive, experiences; each special and unique.

“Each of us, in our own way, will assist in setting up the youths for success for not only their contribution to the theatre world, but in their life personally, socially and eventually professionally.”

Being part of the Wangaratta Play-

ers in her youth, Lexi believes it helped her with her life development and to become who she is today.

“I made some of my fondest memories when I was in Youthies,” Lexi said.

“Personally, I hope to draw from what I learned from the incredible members I had the honour of knowing back in my day and the mentors that taught me all I know.

“I want to make them proud of the direction we are taking with the next generation.

“As a young person, navigating their way through the world at this time of their life is hard enough and with everything the world has gone through the last few years, I hope that this group will be more than a place to learn about theatre.

“I really hope it can be a safe space for kids to come together and reconnect.

“We want this group to provide kids an opportunity to express themselves, develop friendships, make memories and appreciate all things within the theatre world.”

Youthies will commence for term three on Thursday, July 28 at the Yarrunga Scout hall in Vincent Road.

The younger group of eight to 12 year olds will meet between 4pm and 5pm and 13 to 17 year olds from 5.30pm to 7pm.

Activities will include games, role-playing activities, speech, deportment and stage craft, relaxation exercises, listening skills, improvisation, emotion, reading scripts and developing performance skills and specialist information, with some activities undertaken only by the older group.

PANGERANG Community House is offering a helping hand to locals who need assistance with accessing the State Government’s current Power Saving Bonus.

The neighbourhood house’s executive officer, Tennille Hall, said it was important for residents to realise that the new payment which is available to all Victorian households - extended an existing program which was available only to eligible concession card holders, and that those who had previously claimed the bonus were still able to claim the new $250 payment.

To do so, households just need to compare their current energy bills on the Victorian Energy Compare website, to see if they can get a better deal.

Ms Hall said anyone who needed assistance in doing this could book a time to drop in to Pangerang Community House in Ovens Street.

“They just need to bring along a copy of their energy bill, and for anyone who is not able to come in, they can give us a call and we will arrange assistance.

“We don’t want people to miss out on this bonus.”

The Power Saving Bonus is available for the next 12 months, and there are no limits or caps on the number of households which can receive the once-off payment.

Jenni and Peter bask in their golden milestone

By SIMONE KERWIN TIME together recalling a star from their growing-up years will be the perfect celebration for Wangaratta couple Jenni and Peter Field, as they mark their 50th wedding anniversary today.

The Fields were married on July 15, 1972, and have enjoyed reminiscing about the day while looking through their wedding album this week, in anticipation of the golden milestone.

“We don’t get the photos out very often, but it’s been really lovely to look back on the day,” Jenni said.

Peter said he remembered everything about the wedding day, while Jenni recalled it ran smoothly and they were lucky to be surrounded by family for their nuptials at the original Our Lady’s Catholic Church, which was then located where Our Lady’s Primary School’s hall now stands in White Street.

Jenni, who was 18 when the couple married, wore a stylish long-sleeved gown and veil for the winter ceremony, while then-20-year-old Peter was dapper in a dark suit.

They wed a couple of years after meeting in Wangaratta as teenagers.

“We just got on so well, and

since then, we’ve always done things together,” Jenni said.

After marrying, the Fields lived in Wangaratta for a time, before relocating to Rosebud, where they raised children Jamie (49) and Kellie (47).

They returned to live in the rural city a few years ago, to be close to family members including Jenni’s Mum, Win Barry (91), and now enjoy hosting their children, nine grandchildren and great-grandchild when they visit Wangaratta.

Peter said marriage was about teamwork - facing any hard times and enjoying the good times, always together.

Jenni agreed: “And just living life, enjoying life and loving each other; have lots of love in your relationship.”

Peter described Jenni as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, while Jenni said: “I love him heaps - he’s a gorgeous man, and we do work well together as a team”.

The Fields plan to mark their anniversary by visiting the ‘Elvis: Direct from Graceland’ exhibition in Bendigo before it winds down on Sunday.

“Elvis was our era, so it will be wonderful doing something like that together on the day, then we’ll celebrate with family soon,” Jenni said.

Man’s drink driving decision lambasted A WANGARATTA man who drove to a local fast food restaurant while more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit had his car impounded only three hours into the new year.

The 38-year-old appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates Court this week, when he pleaded guilty to a series of driving charges following his decision to visit the restaurant with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.186 earlier this year.

The court heard the accused was reported to police by restaurant workers, with officers arriving shortly after 3am to see the accused turn into Ryley Street, swerve a number of times and then turn into nearby Ovens Street.

His vehicle was impounded at a cost of $1625 and his driver's licence was suspended on the spot.

Magistrate Peter Dunn blasted the accused’s decision to drive.

“It’s a huge mistake, you were heavily intoxicated,” he said.

“What would have happened if you’d run over someone?

“You would have had to have known you were heavily intoxicated.”

He convicted and fined the accused $1200, and disqualified him from driving for 18 months backdated to January 1.

New hospital units a win for the city MINISTER for Health Mary-Anne Thomas opened the intensive care and short stay units at Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) yesterday, although they had been in operation sonce November, it was still welcomed by all those involved in planning of the works and the staff who use that part the hospital.

After a walk-through of the 12-bed ICU and 8-bed short stay unit, Ms Thomas was shown how the new units better cater for the growing number of patients who access the services.

NHW is an increasingly busy health service with a catchment of more than 90,000 people in the region.

The opening of the new units come at a time the State Government is getting pressure over its lack of attention to other hospitals such as funding for a new hospital at Albury-Wodonga.

It also comes as staff are continuing to face unprecedented pressure from staff shortages due to illness and higher demand for care.

With health and hospitals being greatly in the spotlight due to challenges since the pandemic began, Ms Thomas took the time to thank the NHW staff first hand as she walked through the hospital.

Ms Thomas also made a point to relay the message for people to wear a mask if they’re in a crowded setting and make sure their vaccines are up to date.

She also encouraged people to talk to their GP about what they should do if they get COVID. Once the $22.9 million project is complete later this year, it will bring the hospital up to date in many areas which is a win for the region.

Sisley Avenue disorderly tree destruction LET me begin by making it clear that the period for decision by Rural City of Wangaratta, as statutory planning authority, has long passed.

I cast no aspersions upon that decision with respect to its legitimacy or propriety of procedure.

Shortly after council‘s decision, one of the nine mature grey box trees was flagged as being a potential tree of culturally significant heritage – a potential scar tree.

This brought into play relevant state legislation along with a new suite of procedures and decision–making

mechanisms – all well beyond Rural City of Wangaratta‘s jurisdiction.

The intended development for the block, as outlined in the application (PlnApp21/175), would be totally unworkable with that one tree still standing.

The tree sits right where a large warehouse structure is planned.

The plans will need to be heavily modified if it turns out the tree must be retained.

Why then proceed with the absolute destruction of the eight surrounding trees (within mere metres of the tree in question), without any decision yet made regarding the potential scar tree itself?

Particularly because it is the decision regarding the potential scar tree that will determine whether the development will go ahead as per the approved planning application or otherwise.

It appears a confused and illogical order of events at best, an act of impudent brinkmanship and reckless defiance at worst.

The status of the tree is still subject to an ongoing investigation.

In the meantime, one is left pondering: is this what responsible and orderly development looks like?

By BAILEY ZIMMERMANN AUSTRALIAN Red Cross Lifeblood has issued an urgent national call for donors, with 1500 Victorians being sought to donate over the next week.

Floods, road closures, cold and flu, and COVID-19 are keeping many donors at home, reducing Lifeblood’s blood reserves, particularly of platelets, stocked to hospitals to help stop bleeding in accidents, emergencies, and chemotherapy.

Lifeblood spokesperson Cath Stone said donors who are fit and well, and safely able to get to a donor centre, such as Wangaratta, are needed now.

“One in three people will need blood or a blood product in their lifetime, yet only one in 30 donate,” she said.

“As part of Australia’s national blood arrangements, we are currently transporting platelets from Queensland and Victoria to ensure NSW hospitals have enough supply for patients.

“Platelets only last seven days and can't be stockpiled.

“Right now, demand for platelets in NSW is the highest it’s been in 15 months due to increased activity in hospitals.”

Lifeblood said 33,000 donations are needed every week to support patients, around one third of them usually collected from NSW donor centres.

Local Daniel Wernert donated blood at the Wangaratta Lifeblood centre for his 121st time on Wednesday.

He said he is inspired to donate blood because of the unique way it

helps save lives, and it's only possible with community involvement.

“It’s important that we try and keep others alive and healthy in important times,” he said.

“Every one is affected at some time in their life and just get in while you can and help out.”

Lifeblood needs all blood types but is especially keen to hear from O negative donors - the universal blood type used in emergencies.

“We need an additional 700 O negative blood donations over the next week to meet demand,” Ms Stone said.

“If you are O negative, someone in your family could be too, so please to talk to your family and encourage them to donate.”

Grants help volunteers move with the times

TWO Rural City of Wangaratta organisations will share in $6513 to purchase necessary equipment to make life easier.

Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club was successful in obtaining a grant for $3813 to purchase a laptop and EFTPOS square, while Oxley Hall committee will use $2700 to buy folding chairs.

Tennis club treasurer Kevin Callahan said it’s a welcome upgrade and both pieces of equipment will be well used by the club’s 300 members, plus visitors.

“We had been using an old, personal laptop and it was very slow and this new one has been great to keep the finances in check and ready for presentation at our monthly meetings,” Mr Callahan said.

“The EFTPOS square will be a second device to our existing one and it will be particularly handy during busy times such as tournaments.

“It creates a lot of work to deal with cash, so a few years ago we introduced EFTPOS for people to pay for ball fees, and sales from the kiosk, barbecue and bar.”

$3600 raised in store to help others JUVENILE Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is set to receive $93,615 thanks to the generosity of communities in this year’s Officeworks Make A Difference Appeal, with $3600 in donations raised at the Wangaratta Officeworks store.

Throughout June, the Officeworks Make A Difference Appeal encouraged customers to round up the cost of their Officeworks purchase or make a direct contribution at the check-out in store or online, with funds going directly to JDRF to help fund research that focuses on improving lives and curing Type 1 Diabetes.

With the support of customers and the Officeworks team, more than $1 million was raised to directly help JDRF and 13 other local community organisations across the country with the aim to further support children’s health and education in their local communities.

Officeworks Wangaratta Store business manager, Rhi Bradfield, thanked all the customers who donated and supported the local community.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work our team puts in to support the Make A Difference Appeal,” he said.

“We’re thrilled that we’ve raised these funds to support the important work of JDRF to create a world without Type 1 Diabetes.”

Janet Heath from the Oxley Hall committee said they will be able to purchase 100 folding chairs with the money which will make it easier for people to set up their functions.

“We had many cancellations of people hiring the hall over the two years of restrictions, so it is times like these that grants come in handy as we have had little revenue,” Mrs Heath said.

The Oxley Hall in the past has offered a popular space for a range of events such as operas, high teas, weddings and parties.

Indi Independent federal MP Helen Haines called each organisation to share the good news about their successful grant applications personally.

“The successful applicants were recommended to the Federal Government for

funding after being assessed by a panel of community leaders,” Dr Haines said.

“These grants will go a long way towards supporting volunteers to continue their important work in the community, in work that brings people together especially in times of need.

“According to the latest Census results, 19.5 per cent of people in Indi did volunteer work with a group or or-

ganisation - that’s well above the Victorian rate of 13.3 per cent and the Australian rate of 14.1 per cent.

“We really are a community that gives back.”

The rural city recipients were among a dozen in Indi to share in $46,214 in funding which will assist support their volunteers to purchase small equipment and pay for fuel, transport and training costs.

Costs of party election promises revealed

LABOR’S election promises, if fully implemented, would deepen the budget deficit by $6.9 billion over the four financial years to 2025/26, a report has found.

Costings for election promises made by the major parties have been released by the Parliamentary Budget Office.

Labor’s deficits would total $231.4 billion over four years.

The governing party’s election pledges point to a $79 billion budget deficit for 2022/23, dropping to $58.6

billion the following year.

The biggest costs identified by the office are for Labor’s social protection, public services and health policies.

Spending on cheaper child care and to fix the aged care crises as well as boost tax compliance programs would contribute to higher deficits.

But over 10 years, the office sees Labor achieving additional net savings of $21.7 billion.

Meanwhile, the coalition’s election commitments would have contributed $1 billion to

the deficit over four years.

Total deficits would have been $223.5 billion.

The Greens’ policies would contribute to the largest deficits of the three parties over the same period, totalling $250.6 billion.

The biggest costs would be a policy to make TAFE and university free, raise welfare payments and increase foreign aid spending.

Indi Independent MP Helen Haines was the only independent to submit her policies to

the office for review.

The commitment with the largest impact on the budget is Dr Haines’ minimum aged care staff times policy, which would create a $15.2 billion deficit over the next 10 years.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers plans to hand down his first budget on October 25, preceded by an economic update this month.

The PBO uses the 2022 Preelection Economic and Fiscal Outlook report as the baseline for the costings.

Australia vital to humanity’s lunar return AUSTRALIA will be an active participant as NASA works to extend the range of humanity to deep space, sending people back to the moon and ultimately to Mars, a former astronaut and the organisation’s deputy administrator says.

Pam Melroy took part in a forum in Adelaide focussed on Australia’s future in the space industry via videolink on Thursday.

She told the gathering that Australia would play a key role in demonstrating the infrastructure services critical for establishing and sustaining a human presence on the moon.

“Every day our industry partners are developing and growing capabilities to support an economy in low earth orbit that is continuing to expand and evolve,” Ms Melroy said.

“We’re seeing that the opportunities for bringing that economic activity to the moon are starting to develop quickly.

“Of course, our international partners are also eager to join us in our return to the moon and work with us to take what we learn there and apply it towards human missions to Mars.”

A consortium of Australian businesses and research groups are developing a small rover that can operate on the lunar surface.

It will have the ability to pick up surface materials and transfer them to a NASAoperated facility that will attempt to extract oxygen from the material, potentially allowing astronauts to use resources on the moon to create rocket fuel and other mission

consumables.

“This is a crucial capability if we truly want a sustained human presence in the solar system,” Ms Melroy said.

“We are delighted that Australia is focussed on field robot systems and sensing, resource technologies, and planetary science.

“All of these things can provide a long-term contribution to future space exploration.”

NASA’s return to the moon begins later this year with the launch of Artemis 1 - an uncrewed test flight of its Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft which will orbit the lunar surface.

Artemis 2 is then planned to launch in 2024, returning humans to the lunar orbit, before Artemis 3 lands the first woman on the moon in 2025.

Ms Melroy said the progress made by Australia’s space sector in the past four years had been “truly remarkable” since the establishment of the Australian Space Agency.

“Australia has always been a part of the global exploration community, but now you’re taking large strides on the world stage,” she said.

Father of ex-choirboy sues George Pell, Catholic Church THE father of a deceased exchoirboy is suing Cardinal George Pell and the Catholic Church claiming he has suffered psychological injury over his son’s alleged sexual abuse.

Cardinal Pell was acquitted in 2020 after the High Court quashed his convictions for child sexual assault related to allegations he molested two choirboys in the late 1990s when he was Archbishop of Melbourne.

He served 13 months in prison before being released.

One choirboy’s father has filed a civil case seeking damages against the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne and the 81-year-old Cardinal Pell in Victoria’s Supreme Court.

The man is not identified and is listed under a pseudonym.

He claims to have suffered nervous shock arising from his son’s alleged sexual assault by Cardinal Pell.

He has suffered from chronic adjustment disorder and persistent complex bereavement disorder, with mixed anxiety and a depressed mood, court documents reveal.

The father also said he has lost money due to medical expenses and has lost his earning capacity.

Justice Michael McDonald asked lawyers representing the Church whether they were going to rely on the Ellis defence, during a brief hearing on Thursday.

The Ellis defence, which allowed the Catholic Church to deny liability to sexual abuse survivors, was abolished in Victoria in 2018.

Unincorporated associations, such as churches, now have to nominate an entity able to pay damages.

However, it is unclear whether the defence could still be used in cases brought by secondary victims, including victims’ families.

Catholic Archdiocese barrister Geraldine Gray told the court the Church had not yet decided whether it will use the Ellis defence.

Justice McDonald said he was “somewhat flabbergasted” the issue was dealt with before the hearing.

“If the Ellis defence isn’t going to be taken, the proceedings would go ahead,” he said.

He set down a hearing for August 4 on the question of whether the Ellis defence will apply.

Sydney to Melb trains disrupted RAIL commuters are being warned of widespread disruptions to the Sydney to Melbourne service after a weekend derailment.

NSW TrainLink says XPT services have been affected by a derailment at Gunning, between Goulburn and Yass on Sunday, which caused extensive damage to the line.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation is working to repair about nine kilometres of the line, with about 7000 concrete sleepers needing to be replaced.

It will be “a number of days” before the work is complete, with freight and passenger services being restricted during that time.

Customers planning to travel in the next few days “should be aware their journey will be affected and may need to make alternative travel arrangements”, NSW TrainLink says.

“XPT services between Sydney and Melbourne will be significantly disrupted, and customers should expect some delays and cancellations,” it said on Thursday.

Buses will replace services between Sydney and Melbourne where possible, although NSW TrainLink warned services would be limited “due to the high demand following damage caused by recent widespread weather events”.

Lighting the fire in new local leaders within CFA

WANGARATTA’S CFA Group is set to accelerate efforts to uncover new leaders among its ranks, as part of a push to inject new blood into vital command roles ahead of the upcoming fire season.

Some 15 representatives from eight local brigades gathered at District 23’s Ely Street headquarters last week, for a theory-based session focused around the relationship between fireground responders and command units at North and South Wangaratta’s Local Command Facilities (LCF).

The program simulated an escalating grassfire near Springhurst, which called on attendees to explore how they would communicate and coordinate an initial air and ground response, while also determining the appropriate time to pass command responsibilities onto members of the LCF or the district’s Incident Control Centre (ICC) in the event an initial attack failed to quell the blaze.

Wangaratta Group officer Lachie Gales said the exercise had been designed to explore the important structures put in place by CFA to ensure minimal confusion in the face of a dangerous fire response.

“It’s really vital that they understand we work in a structural way - when you think about the dynamic or chaotic situations a crew may roll into, having a structure we can build on and expand is

vital,” he said.

“We need unity of purpose - we inform people before they get out there that this is how it’s going to work and if that fire grows and expands we’ve got some semblance of structure in place.

“I’m really encouraged by the response our volunteers have when we stage this training - it is volunteers training volunteers, so everyone responds really well.”

Existing LCF members were also in attendance, exploring the responsibilities they would have in the event a fire escalated and management decisions such as initiating strike team support or sectorising the fire among different units were required.

Other decisions, such as organising a multi-agency response, getting food and toilet amenities to the on-ground firefighters, as well as de-escalating the fire and disbanding the response, were also canvased in detail.

Further upskill training for existing and new LCF members is expected to take place in spring, according to Mr Gales.

“We’re recruiting (for the LCF) by talking about it, underlining the importance of the work,” he said.

PHOTO: Ryan Malcolm “We’ve had some people working for decades in our LCFs, it’s a satisfying role for people who may have had experience on the fireground and understand what happens - we bring a level of experience and reality into the event.

“But there are also plenty of roles for people who want to assist that aren’t on the fireground - it might be someone with strong logistical or IT skills, there’s a myriad of jobs that aren’t on a fire truck.”

It’s part of an increasing focus on training and upskilling which Mr Gales said had partly been lost in recent times.

“It’s really pleasing to see people of all ages and across

the spectrum of experience attend these things,” he said.

“To see those younger people who are going to be the fireground leaders in the future understanding there’s a structure and if you work to the structure it will all work out - the more you go, the more you see and the more you learn, it becomes intuitive.

“I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve had a lot of people invest a lot in me, and now I enjoy the opportunity to pass that back.

“CFA was once described as the biggest leadership school in Australia - it’s something we need to go back to more than we do.”

The new recruits will add to Victoria’s existing 1100 forest firefighters who are supported by more than 2000 permanent staff who can be called on to perform emergency roles when required.

Clean Up Wang Waterways focus

CLEAN Up Wangaratta (CUW) enthusiasts have helped clean out One Mile Creek and the Old Hume Highway, which were once filled with plastic only a few years ago.

On Monday three CUW volunteers pulled five big white bags of litter out of the worst part of One Mile Creek, about 150 metres downstream of Phillipson Street.

It took about one and a half hours armed with super long poles, grabbers and people wearing waders.

There has now been 33 big white bags of mainly plastic removed from that one creek (plus lots of large items like furniture and tyres), since September 2021.

Before the end of Plastic Free July, CUW aims to have cleaned 99 per cent of One Mile Creek from Cribbes Road down to where the creek joins Three Mile Creek.

CUW have also been investing time in the clean up of the southern roadside

of the Old Hume Highway since 2019, where volunteers go to clean litter once every three months.

As part of Clean Up Australia in early March, a smaller crew polished off the section of the road and on Monday, two CUW volunteers cleaned the middle section of the allocated roadside, yielding four bags of brand new rubbish.

Much of this plastic litter has been flowing into Three Mile Creek (and then the Ovens) after heavy rains.

LIONS Club of Wangaratta held its changeover dinner on Saturday, June 25 to commemorate the work of the club over the past year.

President Michael Everard provided a report and he said the year was one of continuing transition for the Lions Club.

“The club and Lions across Australia are undoubtedly at a crossroads with declining membership and capacity among remaining members,” he said.

“This year for Wangaratta Lions has been one of restoring stability and structure in our club, the next is about regeneration and growth.”

There were about 70 people in attendance.

It is a celebration of two artists who have made a lasting impact in our artistic community and will run in Gallery 2 until July 24.

Petite Miniatures at the gallery THE Petite Miniatures textile exhibition is open at the Wangaratta Art Gallery.

Showcasing the best small textile artworks from around the nation, Petite has become a highlight of the gallery’s program and a focus for contemporary textile art practitioners.

It includes a diverse array of techniques and themes exploring everything from colour, texture and decoration to social, political and environmental issues, all captured in artworks within dimensions of just 25cm square.

Chris Thorne’s wisdom in art

BRIGHT LIGHTS: An exhibition featuring the artwork of all 12 resident artists has opened at Wangaratta’s non-profit community gallery, Art Gallery on Ovens. Called Let the Light Shine Through, it showcases the broad range of styles of each of the members of the local art collective, including portraits, landscapes, paintings, printmaking, photography and collage.

It also includes works by award-winning realistic oil painter and pencil artist, Kate Jenvey (pictured). Kate is a signature member of The Society of Animal Artists; her works capturing the movement and majesty of wild and domesticated animals. An official opening event will be held tomorrow at the gallery in the laneway off Murphy Street from 1pm until 3pm. But members of the public can see the exhibition each Friday, Monday and Thursday from 10am until 4pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 2pm until August 1 and entry is free.

Enjoy a spectacular drive-in Dreamtime story THE premiere of an ambitious, multi-sensory show which promises to be a spectacle for audience members of all ages will be held at the Wangaratta Showgrounds this weekend.

The Fire Garden is centred around a First Nations Creation story from the river country in southern New South Wales, told by renowned indigenous educator, musician and storyteller, Wamba Wamba man, Uncle Ron Murray.

Like the drive-in cinemas of yesteryear, Ron’s words will be broadcast through the car radios of audience members parked at the showgrounds and tuned in to Oak FM 101.3, while the visuals happen in front of everyone as they watch from their cars.

After three years of delays due to COVID, the show is finally ready to go ahead, with a production team from The Village Festival arriving on site to get it ready.

Lead artist Uncle Ron Murray is a loved and respected storyteller, following in the tradition of his Nan Karpany, of the Tatiara people of the Coorong, South Australia.

The story he shares will be accompanied by awe-inspiring pyrotechnics, goliath puppets and beautiful projections, transporting the audience to the time where country was created by animals and the spirits.

It’s a multi-faceted story told in music, light and sound which will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display.

AN exhibition of new work from local aboriginal artist Chris Thorne is now on display in the foyer of the Wangaratta Performing Arts and Convention Centre.

Peter Wegner: The Centenarians AN exhibition of portraits

by Archibald Prize winning artist Peter Wegner is currently being held at the Benalla Art Gallery.

Titled The Centenarians, it celebrates a project which involved the artist completing portraits of well over 100 Centenarians across Victoria and New South Wales, the drawings completed from life in an afternoon or morning with little alteration to the first impression, capturing a moment in time.

Digital open day will help women WANGARATTA women will have the opportunity to benefit from a digital open day to be held at the Wangaratta Library on July 19 from 10am to 3pm.

The open day is part of the Victorian Women’s Trust Rural Women Online program; an IT program designed by women for regional Victorian women.

Victorian Women’s Trust chair Alana Johnson said the program will give women in the community a chance to build their digital skills in an open, empowering and positive environment.

“At our Rural Women Online Open Days, women will have the opportunity to connect with other local women, find assistance and answers to all those tech questions that might be confusing, and to get online and try different computer

equipment and software,” she said.

“Recent data shows there are still significant barriers for rural women when it comes to accessing the digital world, including abilitybased barriers.

“These barriers are exacerbated by the fear and shame that women may experience when seeking IT assistance.”

Rural Women Online consists of three streams; a set of how-to-guides, a women staffed tech help desk and one-on-one mentoring.

The how-to-guides, which can be found at ruralwomenonline.org.au, are a selfdirected online crash course in tech knowledge, covering subjects from e-safety to how to use common software.

For rural women that require real time assistance,

the Rural Women Online help desk will field email and phone enquiries once a week which aims to provide advice that empowers, not condescends.

“At the end of the program, the brand new, up-todate infrastructure we bring for the open day will stay in location for the use and benefit of the whole community,” Ms Johnson said.

“Women in the Victorian regions are immensely capable and deeply resilient. Our program will build on that capacity by ensuring rural women have positive opportunities to build their digital skills.”

Rural Women Online is a joint initiative of the Helen McPherson Smith Trust and the Bendigo Bank Community Enterprise Foundation, delivered by the Victorian Women’s Trust.

Grey Butcherbird - Not to be messed with

THE Grey Butcherbird has a lovely, lilting song.

They may not seem to be a particularly menacing species, however, with their strong, hooked beaks and fierce stare, they are not birds to be messed with.

When they nest or are protecting newly fledged chicks, if you venture too close, a butcherbird may swoop and flying straight at your face, sometimes striking, accompanied by a loud, maniacal cackle.

They are known by the Bpangerang as Wooratu.

The adult Grey Butcherbird has a black crown and face and a grey back, with a thin white collar.

The wings are grey, with large areas of white and the underparts are white.

The grey and black bill is large, with a small hook at the tip of the upper bill.

The eye is dark brown and the legs

and feet are dark grey.

Both sexes have similar plumage and the females are slightly smaller than the males.

Young Grey Butcherbirds resemble adults, but have black areas replaced with olive-brown and a brownish wash on the white areas.

The bill is completely dark grey and often lacks an obvious hook.

The only other species that is found locally that is similar is the Pied Butcherbird, described in an earlier article, which is larger and boldly marked in black and white.

Grey Butcherbirds range from mid-eastern Queensland, through southern Australia, including Tasmania, to northern Western Australia.

They prefer wooded habitats, including urban areas and are found locally in pairs dotted on larger bush edges, well timbered

roadsides and in treed parkland.

Grey Butcherbirds are aggressive predators feeding on small animals, including birds, lizards and insects, as well as some fruits and seeds.

Uneaten food may be stored in the fork or a branch or impaled, hence the name butcherbird.

They sit on an open perch seeking prey which, once sighted, they pounce on.

Most prey is caught on the ground, though small birds and insects may be caught in flight.

The Grey Butcherbird’s bowl-shaped nest is made of sticks and twigs and lined with grasses and other soft fibres.

It is normally located within 10 m of the ground.

Only the female incubates the eggs and the young birds are fed by both parents.

The young birds will remain in the breeding territory for about a year, and help the parents raise the young of the following season.

Their song is a lovely rich piping and is the easiest way to locate Grey Butcherbirds locally.

Bringing live music to shire

By MARTIN DAVIS ALPINE Shire Council has awarded an $180,000 contract to Live Nation to organise a live music event in the shire before January 31, 2023.

The funding for the event was money council had set aside from the $2.3 million it received from the State Government, through the Bushfire Recovery Victoria’s Council Support Fund, following the 2019/20 bushfires.

Live Nation is responsible for getting some of the most prominent artists and bands to tour Australia (e.g.

Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Harry Styles) and organising festivals like the three-day Falls Festival in Birregurra.

Councillors were informed that a new State Government organisation, ‘Always Live’, has been formed to stimulate the music industry following the COVID-19 pandemic through the delivery of music

The event’s objective is to engage and entertain the youth of the Alpine Shire while assisting the community’s recovery from the bushfires and the two years of restrictions that occurred from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report to councillors at last week’s meeting recommended Live Nation as the preferred tenderer from eight initial parties who responded to the May tender process.

Alpine Shire director of assets, Will Jeremy, said council had received a proposal for an Always Live event to be delivered in the Alpine Shire featuring a significant headline artist.

condition of council accepting the proposal may include the requirement to charge an entry fee. Council is currently engaging with Always Live to assess this proposal,” he reported to council.

Councillor John Forsyth said the event presented an exciting opportunity, reflecting back on the March 2020 visit by international superstar Katy Perry.

“I don’t think $180,000 would get a really big-name artist, however if the event

is ticketed then the sky’s the limit, we could do whatever we wanted to do,” Cr Forsyth said.

“However, I would hate to see the ticket prices getting out of hand as it is a community styled event.”

Council is still in discussions about where the event will be held.

It is looking at all of the shire’s major towns, with the ultimate choice of venue to determine which weekend the event will be held.

Chestnut industry’s strong season,despite challenges

By BRODIE EVERIST INDUSTRY body Chestnuts Australia has reported a strong chestnut season this year, despite challenges from fungal disease and worker shortages.

According to president of Chestnuts Australia, Brian Casey, some chestnut varieties were affected by internal rot, a fungal disease impacting harvested nuts.

Combined with high chestnut volumes, this caused market prices to fall around May, said Mr Casey, but since then the market has recovered.

“Some varieties did have a bit of a quality issue. So the market slowed a bit right at the peak, which is not that uncommon,” he said.

But according to Mr Casey, the industry recorded large volumes of chestnuts which gave reasonably good returns for growers.

“There are still chestnuts in storage, good quality ones at that,” he said.

Mr Casey said the Ovens Valley was only experiencing isolated incidents of chestnut blight, a cankerous fungal disease first detected in Victoria in 2010.

He was optimistic that the area is on track to eliminate the disease, after receiving funding from the Victorian government last year for biosecurity officers to detect the fungus.

“Thankfully, it doesn’t appear to be spreading much at all,” Mr Casey said.

“We are confident down the track we can achieve eradication, although growers should remain vigilant and report any suspicious-looking trees.”

Mr Casey said that while growers experienced worker shortages, sales weren’t significantly impacted.

“My understanding is most growers had difficulty sourcing harvesters, but they did manage to get enough, even though it meant that they had to do a lot more work,” he said.

“It was tough, but they managed to get their crops harvested and sold.”

Ovens chestnut grower Nick Moschis said his harvest was larger than last year, which he put down to rain in January and a dry period during the pollination period in November.

His 1000-tree orchard produces around 10,000 tonnes of chestnuts, which he supplies wholesale and also sells them at the Queen Victoria Market in Melbourne.

Mr Moschis said he lost around 30 per cent of his crop in testing for internal rot, while in a normal year only he would only lose 10 per cent.

He put the high prevalence of rot down to the wet weather in January and the crop staying longer on the ground, but admitted there isn’t much evidence for what exactly causes the fungus.

“Every variety and every situation is different depending on where you are and what you’re growing,” he said.

Officer breaks ankle

COVID cases rising

A BRIGHT policeman‘s ankle was broken while attempting to maneuver a drunken person into a police van on Saturday morning.

According to Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll of Bright police, the person had become violent, and while three officers attempted to put the person into the van, one officer placed his foot into a small hole on uneven ground, causing his ankle to break during a struggle.

ACTIVE COVID cases in the Alpine Shire had risen to 88 on Monday, with 21 new cases detected in the 24 hours prior to 3pm on Monday.

This is almost a doubling of active cases since last week, according to Victorian Government data.

Health authorities say a surge in cases of COVID-19 BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants is contributing to an increase in respiratory virus infections and is expected to worsen in coming months.

Myrtleford celebrates ‘the boxing butcher’

By BRODIE EVERIST ABOUT 35 attended the unveiling of a mosaic on Sunday dedicated to Myrtleford local Steve Dale - ‘the boxing butcher’ - for his stellar boxing career and his work in the community.

The mosaic was a surprise for Mr Dale, who was expecting to go out for lunch in Wangaratta, but instead was taken by his wife to Dale's Butchery on Standish Street around 11am, where a crowd had gathered, including family, friends and community members.

Organiser Mal Wilson thanked Mr Dale for his steadfast commitment to teaching boxing for local kids every Monday night with his friend Kevin Grealy at the Myrtleford Showgrounds.

“Every Monday night since I’ve been here Steve Dale is up there skipping away no matter what,” he said.

“It just hit me in the heart to think this bloke here and his mates every Monday night,

without any recognition, they’re up there teaching the kids in this little town that there’s a better life than just doing nothing and I take my hat off to Steve for doing that.

“He was a champion as a boxer.

“He boxed 19 consecutive fights at Festival Hall on a show called TV Ringside - some great champions came out of that place.”

Mr Dale thanked Mal and Glenys Wilson for organising the artwork, said he was flattered and had “no idea” the mosaic was being made, and attributed his boxing success to his former trainer John Garoni.

The work was created by local anonymous art duo the Crackpots, who are responsible for over 100 mosaics dotted throughout Myrtleford.

Sponsors of the mosaic included the Lions Club of Myrtleford, the Myrtleford Rotary Club, Dale's Butchery, the Myrtleford Show Society, Happy Valley Hotel, Dahlsens Myrtleford and the Myrtleford Hotel.

Mayor says Bright development can help ease housing pressure ALPINE Shire Mayor Sarah Nicholas believes a major housing development plan approved by council last week for 35 hectares of land on the edge of Bright township will ease the low availability of housing in the shire.

Cr Nicholas said the Bright Western Gateway Development Plan will provide an opportunity for community members and future residents to secure a piece of Bright in a market currently struggling with low housing availability and choice.

“We’ve seen an unprecedented demand for housing locally since the start of the COVID pandemic,” she said.

“This development means that residents who are struggling to secure their own home, as well as future community members keen for a tree change, will have an oppor-

tunity to buy into this highly sought after place to live, work and play.

“This is a step towards providing more houses, thus easing the housing pressures we are seeing play out across the Alpine Shire and more broadly around the country, but it is by no means the final step.”

The development plan provides a high-level concept for the site, but detailed design will still be required for areas such as drainage, roadways and landscaping, which will be determined at the planning permit stage.

Cr Nicholas said council approved the development plan as the next step in the development process.

“The approval of a development plan is different to approving a plan of subdivision - we’re still a fair way off from that level

of detail,” she said.

“There is plenty of work to be done by the developer and council’s planning department to ensure that the final project meets the requirements of the Alpine Planning Scheme and satisfies key stakeholders.”

According to council, it will continue to engage with the community about how they wish to see the development progress and address any concerns as they arise.

The Great Alpine Road site was rezoned from farming land to residential in 2015, and purchased by Melbourne developers the Deague family in February 2022.

The development plan for the 41 hectare site was considered for approval by councillors at the July council meeting last week, based on planning considerations put in place in 2015.

■ EYE-CATCHER: Hot hatch shapes up as sporty sedan from any angle.

By DEREK OGDEN HYUNDAI more than catered for the bare-arsed would-be racetrack tyros with the i30 N hot hatch; now the South Korean automobile manufacturer has turned its attention to the ‘driver of a certain age’ with a sedan version.

Hyundai’s first dip in the sports sedan segment, the latest tech and creature comforts go hand in glove in the i30 Sedan N with surprising alacrity, without losing the hot hatch experience.

And, by all accounts, Hyundai’s debutant is on the way to becoming a segment icon.

Not to be confused with the i30 Sedan N-Line, the N is an out-and-out sports sedan to be compared with similar European ‘hotties’ unlike the i30 N-line whose additions are basically cosmetic.

The N-Line manual sedan comes to market starting at less than $30k, plus onroads, the top-of-the range i30 Sedan N Premium auto tips the scales at a little over $50,000. The latter was on test.

STYLING While undeniably sculpted with an N sports body kit to earmark its high-performance pedigree from all angles, the i30 Sedan N shows its most exciting view from behind, that most likely being other road users’ first glimpse of the car as it accelerates past ‘mere mortal’ vehicles.

Not that the rest of the

design elements don’t stand out from the crowd with a bold front bumper and N diffuser, triangular rear fog lamp, full-width tail-light strip and boot-mounted spoiler, plus bespoke 19inch alloy wheels with Nbranded calipers peeking out from behind dark mattish spokes.

There’s plenty there to please the performance car fan.

It has a selection of creases and curves, while side sills reduce drag and improve air flow.

The rear wing and diffuser manage downforce at high speed and on the track, front air intakes cool the brakes during repeated hard use. Nothing is surplus to requirements.

INTERIOR A driver-focused cabin continues the N(ness) with race-inspired seats, wrapped in black leather topped off by stitched N logos, firmly offering lateral support to front occupants during enthusiastic cornering.

The driver’s seat is height and 10-way power adjustable, which includes two-way lumbar support.

There are heated steering wheel and front seats for comfort and convenience.

Storage is good in the centre console area, as well as door pockets, cup and bottle slots.

The boot has up to 464 litres of practical space compared to 381 litres in the hatch.

It’s hands-free opening with the key fob.

The spare is a space-saver.

INFOTAINMENT The all-new i30 Sedan N comes with a 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

There’s access to music, podcasts and connectivity apps.

Wireless smartphone charging comes standard.

Sound comes from seven high-fidelity speakers, plus a separate subwoofer and a Bose audio for a rich sound.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS While the i30 Sedan NLine makes do with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, the N jumps up to a 2.0-litre turbo ‘six’. On offer are either a six-speed manual or eight-speed DCT automatic transmission.

SAFETY The i30 Sedan N has the Hyundai SmartSense Advanced Drivers Assistance System developed to help avoid imminent danger on the road.

Included are blind spot rear and forward collision avoidance, lane keeping and following assist, and high beam assist. It has driver attention warning, safe exit assist, rear-seat occupation alert and rear crosstraffic avoidance.

DRIVING With the six-cylinder engine stumping up 392 Nm maximum torque between 2100 and 4700 rpm, plus 206 kW of peak power of 5500 from 4500 to 6000 revs, there’s plenty for the enthusiastic driver to play with.

An eight-speed wet double-clutch automatic N transmission sends the power package to the front wheels. There is the option of a six-speed manual.

Fuel consumption of 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres is claimed in the combined urban / highway cycle. The test vehicle with eightspeed DCT recorded 8.7 litres per 100 kilometres in mixed driving conditions.

Ride and handling are under the direction of an integrated drive axle (a first for Hyundai) that is made up of drive shaft, wheel hub and bearing, with a weight saving of 1.7 kg.

The result is added lateral g-force exhilaration during swift cornering.

With drive modes it becomes a choice between Normal, Eco, Sport and Smart, the last determining driving habits by the position of the brake pedal and the operation of the steering

wheel, then tailoring such elements as shift pattern and engine torque to suit.

Special to the ‘N’ is an aptly named N Grin Control System, N Performance Driving Data System and various track maps with lap timer. Just set to the track, cross the start line and lap times are automatically recorded as you go.

Hyundai’s five-year / unlimited-kilometre warranty is part of the Sedan N package, along with cappedprice servicing at $1005 for the first three years and $1675 for the first five years.

SUMMARY For those turning their back on the Hyundai i30 hot hatch in search of something more in keeping with becoming ‘grown up’, the i30 Sedan N is equally at home on city streets as it is on the race circuit and, for good measure, it has a ‘proper boot’.

Given Hunt’s error in the 2015 NRL grand final while playing for Brisbane is often seen as the defining moment of his career, it’s a deserved

change to that script.

Queensland coach Billy Slater was far from surprised it was Hunt - a two-time Ron McAuliffe Medallist as the Maroons’ best in a series who found a way to deliver the win.

“He was out on his feet halfway through that second half,” Slater said.

“He was one of those guys in the middle doing all that work.

AFL lifts mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy THE AFL has ended its compulsory COVID-19 vaccine mandate and will instead “strongly encourage” players to receive the jab.

The lifting of the vaccine requirement takes effect immediately, meaning the likes of former Carlton defender Liam Jones are eligible to play again.

Jones opted to retire rather than move to the Blues’ inactive list following the AFL’s decision to mandate vaccination last October.

The AFL on Thursday con-

firmed it had written to clubs saying the requirements had been scrapped after an “extensive” review.

“The health and safety of our players, staff and the wider community has been one of the guiding principles governing the AFL’s ongoing response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” AFL football operations manager Andrew Dillon said.

“Our AFL industry has continued to adapt to the circumstances

in front of us, and while we have removed the mandatory vaccine mandate, we still maintain the view that vaccinations are the best form of defence in minimising the impacts of COVID with the focus now on keeping “up to date” with all recommended boosters.

“We will continue to monitor the COVID situation as it evolves. “If we need to adjust over the coming weeks and months we will do so in consultation with the respective governments and

Hawk Wingard ruled out for rest of 2022 HAWTHORN have ruled a line through Chad Wingard for the rest of the AFL season in a bid to get the star forward fit and firing in 2023.

Wingard is yet to play more than 17 games in a season since crossing from Port Adelaide to Hawthorn at the end of 2018.

The 28-year-old managed just 10 games this year before suffering a hamstring strain in June just hours after being cleared to return from a calf injury.

It was initially hoped the hamstring injury would only sideline Wingard for several weeks, but his pro-

gress has been slow and the risk of returning this year was deemed too high.

“He is still not progressing well enough, so at best it was looking like it would be the last game of the year,” Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell said ahead of Sunday’s clash with West Coast at the MCG. “It isn’t worth it. We’ve decided to rule him out for the rest of the season.

“He is a bit frustrated, but it’s just not coming along as quickly (as we want).

“We really need him to have a strong pre-season and get on top of this lack

of continuity that he’s had, particularly this season, but over the last couple of years.”

Firebirds hire premiership winner as coach THE Queensland Firebirds have turned to a former premiership-winning player as their new head coach, appointing Rebecca Bulley to replace the departed Megan Anderson.

Bulley, a member of the Firebirds’ 2015 premiership team, has taken over after Anderson stepped down in June having failed to reach the Super Netball finals in her two seasons at the helm.

An assistant coach for the NSW Swifts’ Super Netball championship in 2021, Bulley said the opportunity to lead the Firebirds back to the competition’s sum-

mit was a challenge she couldn’t overlook.

“The Firebirds is a great club,” she said.

“There’s some great players, great talent, great experience.

“I’ve played with the club before and was a premiership player with the club. It just felt right ... an amazing opportunity.”

The ex-Australian Diamonds representative has signed a four-year deal which she believes will allow her to develop the Firebirds into a leading outfit.

“The support and the confidence to know that

I’ve got time to really implement what I would like to do with the team, I feel like I have the backing of the board and Netball Queensland which is great,” she said.

“A premiership would definitely be something that I will be striving towards.

“It’s going to take a lot off hard work, to be honest.”

Bulley’s appointment comes days after the Firebirds had to defend the decision to not offer a new contract to star shooter Romelda Aiken-George.

CA unveil schedule for BBL 12

BIG international names and crowds returning en masse are expected to breathe life back into the Big Bash League this summer.

The 12th edition of Australia’s Twenty20 tournament will start in Canberra on December 13 when the Sydney Thunder host the Melbourne Stars.

A record 17 grounds, including first-time ven-

ues in Albury, Cairns and North Sydney, will be used across the 45-game tournament.

After a difficult last few seasons, complicated

by COVID-19, BBL boss Alistair Dobson is confident interest in the competition will rise again.

Teams were decimated

by COVID-19 last season, affecting the quality of games and attendances at grounds.

Eventual champions Perth played just one home match at Optus Stadium for the entire campaign, relocating east to deal with WA’s hard border closure.

“Just having crowds back at the BBL this summer is exciting, it’s been a tough couple of years on that front,” Dobson told AAP as CA announced the BBL schedule on Thursday.

“We’ve built a schedule

that we think gives the maximum opportunity for fans to get back to games.

“Our broadcasters have made it very loud and clear to us that big crowds in big stadiums work.

“The backdrop of the best sport on TV, it’s not necessarily unique to cricket, but it’s certainly one of the key features of the BBL.” The introduction of the

overseas player draft will add another element to the tournament, with former South African captain Faf du Plessis already confirmed and more big names to be announced as soon as next week.

This week’s official cancellation of the ODI series between Australia and South Africa in January has opened the door for more international stars

to feature in the BBL after the conclusion of the New Year’s Test at the SCG. Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Swepson, Nathan Lyon and Alex Carey are contracted to BBL franchises, while Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith want to return to the competition.

BBL 12 will conclude with the final on February 4.

WARBY WALKERS Friday, July 8 Orchard Track, Stanley State Forest, Beechworth Last Friday, seven participants attended the Orchard Track in the Stanley State Forest walk of approx 8 km.

After starting at Lady Newton Drive the first stop was at Bate’s Dam before climbing along Jensen’s Track.

Following Orchard Track to Tully Track we walked uphill again to a bush track to re-connect with West Dingle Track and then returned to Lady Newton Drive.

It was a very pleasant morning’s walk despite the presence of thick fog which meant that views were almost non existent for most of the walk.

A shorter option of about 11k excludes the climb up Kangaroo Hill.

Both walks include a creek crossing, so BYO spare footwear and poles.

Sunday, July 31 Kancoona Gap Track, Kancoona near the Kiewa Valley Michael, 0447 617 880 A medium to hard walk of about 10km on gravel tracks, including one long ascent.

Starting on the edge of pine plantation, a steady climb over 5km from 400m to 600m is made to Kancoona Gap Track in the state forest.

Along this track, a peak of 730m is reached, before descending to 580m.

Usual suspects shine in clay target competition

THERE were some familiar names at the top of the charts after the Wangaratta Clay Target Club’s Sporting Clays competition on Sunday, July 10.

Just like he did last month, Brodie Seccull finished with the highest overall score.

Not only that, but Marty Seymour and David Jackel also repeated their June results by finishing with the second and third highest scores respectively.

At least the weather was different this time around and clear sunny skies greeted the five squads of shooters in attendance.

Long-time committee member Phil Smith beat the sparrows out of bed on Sunday and he was at the grounds early, planning the trap layouts.

With help from Brian Reid, Russell Barnes, Anton and Matt Motha, the grounds were set up to provide a challenging day’s sport for the shooters.

Brodie Seccull was certainly up to the challenge and

he took out AA Grade with 90/100.

Second went to Marty Seymour on 88/100.

In A Grade, Wang club life member David Jackel took the win for the third month in a row, this time with 83/100.

Mark Reynolds was second on 77/100.

B Grade went to F&G shooter Harry Weygood on 78/100 with Chris Kloppenborg’s 69/100 securing him second place.

Last month’s C Grade first and second placed shooters reversed their finishing order this month, with Brett Dixon, vice-president of Wodonga SSAA, victorious on 64/100 and Stephen Coulston focusing on clays rather than cows long enough to take second on 58/100.

Overall High Gun went to Brodie Seccull on 90/100.

The Veterans category went to Barry Ellis, using his exquisite old 1896 vintage Joseph Lange double barrel to score 61/100.

Trina Adams took out the Ladies category with 61/100.

The Juniors category went to hard working club volunteer Matt Motha on 71/100.

Young Finn McBurnie is just 12 years old and has only been shooting for a month, but his keen interest and mature attitude won him the encouragement award.

Thanks to the volunteers who braved a chilly winter’s morning to help set up the grounds.

Thanks also to Bruce Henshall in the canteen, and to Anita Klima, Linda Motha and Ernie Williams in the office.

The Wangaratta Clay Target Club’s next competition will be Down the Line on Saturday, July 16.

Baseball returns from holiday break

NORTH East Baseball resumed on Sunday after a two week break for carnivals and school holidays.

Wangaratta Rangers A Grade and under 11s travelled to Gayview Park, Wodonga to play Wodonga Warriors.

The under 11s broke the ice starting at 9am.

Rangers batted first and scored five runs in their first innings.

Warriors scored the maximum of seven runs when they had not lost an out when their seventh batter got on base safely.

Although Rangers were hitting the ball, they were going straight to the fielders for easy outs, while Warriors were finding the gaps between the fielders for safe hits. Warriors ran out winners 19 runs to Rangers 11.

The Rangers two B Grade sides played each other at their home diamond.

Rangers Orange were the first to bat with one out and one on base.

Orange went on to bat through their line-up with the help of fielding errors by the grey team and were able

to bring in five runs.

Rangers Grey’s day did not start too well when with bases loaded, they lost their third out and no runs scored.

They could only get one runner on base safely in their next two innings while their opposition added six more rums to lead by 11 runs at the top of the fourth dig.

Rangers Orange showed no mercy to their club opposition and went on to win 19 runs to nil.

Rangers Black played Warriors in the A Grade game.

Batting first, Rangers Black got off to a good start

when they had brought in three runs and had bases loaded when they lost their third out.

Warriors had two on base when they lost their third out in their first turn at bat, but the Rangers looked like they were out to win with their pitcher/catcher combination of Nathan Pool and Johnathan Taylor working well and with their fielders backing them up, Warriors did not have more than four batters face the plate in any of the next four innings and could not buy a run.

But the Rangers managed

to add another seven runs to lead by 10 runs at the top of the fifth innings.

A lapse in concentration

by Rangers batters saw the Warriors lift their game in their fielding when they got the Rangers out three up, three down in their next three turns at bat getting a double play in each dig although the Rangers did not add any runs in these three digs, neither did the Warriors with Rangers Black taking the win, 10 runs to Warriors no score.

Rangers under 15’s had the bye.

Oxley table tennis group gets in the Commonwealth Games spirit

WITH Wimbledon behind us, and the Commonwealth Games not too far away, table tennis was high on the agenda at the Oxley hall last Monday night.

Despite a number of regulars calling in ‘unavailable’ due to holidaying in the warmer northern states, 15 enthusiasts arrived ready for action in the weekly social competition.

So many sets - doubles and singles - were contested, with players changing partners and opponents in the non-stop table battles.

When Simon (Brown) says ‘spin those wheels’, it’s

game on, and so it was when partnering ‘sure Will’ Bonwick, lining up against the young and lively teenager Eamon Mullins and the allpumped-up Manni Poulos in a game to remember.

With each pair bouncing off their partners’ strengths and canny match play, the lead ebbed and flowed for what seemed forever.

But all good things must come to an end, and when asked who won, the big smiles on Mullins’ and Poulos’ faces said it all.

Maintaining his clean cut, and precise strokemaking, when partnering

his schoolgirl daughter Phoebe, Adam Bosley was in top form as they took on Kate Cole, who ‘floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee’, and her ‘don’t take me lightly’ son, Archie Crispin.

In a very even games, the ‘oldies’ provided, and were also given, tactical lessons as the very agile youngsters retrieved shots, and won points, from what appeared to be impossible opportunities.

Lots of laughs, but intent was serious, and wonderful to watch.

Who won - dunno.

The bloke with the scin-

When the ‘picture boy’ Jason Mullins and his mate Manni Poulos lined up to take on the ‘powerhouse’ Neil Spurgeon, and his ‘hit or miss’ partner June Uebergang, it appeared Spurgeon would have his hands full in trying to combat the combined strength and accuracy of the blokes at the other end of the table.

But, determined to make a worthy contribution, Uebergang threw all her weight behind Spurgeon, as well as onto the floor, as she tried to chase down a wide one, but regained her composure to serve for the match.

Four players displaying four different strong points provided a great contest, and great entertainment for on-lookers.

Big serves, long and sharp angled drives, and sneaky little slices all contributed to a mouth-watering meal of table tennis at its best, resulting in a very close victory to the ‘B-Doubles’, Butcher and Brock.

However, Mullins and Poulos had the last laugh, winning 21-20.

At the conclusion of play, everyone packed up their bats and moved to the supper table, to replace lost energy with a cuppa and the usual fine foods, mixed with lively conversation including ‘what might have been’s.

Adults and secondary school children of all ages and abilities are most welcome to join the group every Monday night, beginning at 7pm in the Oxley hall - bring your own bat and $2 entry fee.

MATCH PREVIEWS Lindsey Humphrey’s 300th game is a testament to consistency ROUND

ARGUABLY the most successful netball coach of recent years, and a true icon of the Ovens and King league, marks a massive personal milestone tomorrow, when Greta’s Lindsey Humphries plays her 300th game for the mighty Blues.

With multiple best and fairest nods and five A grade premierships to her name, including coaching the Blues to their historic flag three-peat from 2017-2019, Humphries’ netball resume borders on the mythical.

A graduate of the Blues’ junior netball program, Humphries played a stint in the O&M with Wodonga Raiders and Wangaratta Rovers before returning to her home club.

“I suppose I never really had a plan for how many games I’d play, I just wanted to continue playing while I was still enjoying it and being able to contribute to the team out there,” she said.

“It’s obviously a good milestone to reach, to still be able to play after so many games.

“Growing up there, I always really enjoyed the club vibe, I looked up to a lot of the players who I saw playing as a junior, and I suppose I wanted to come back and be able to contrib-

ute in a positive way for the club while I was still capable of playing.

“It was a good draw, there were some friends still playing and some friends came back around that time in 2010.

“It’s been quite a good period to be involved with the club, but it’s a club with a great history - even what we’ve achieved at the club in the last 10 years is nothing like what they achieved in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

“We’re really grateful to do it, the club’s got such a great history of some really strong netball there.”

Greta’s dominance of the A grade competition looks to continue, with the Blues undefeated after 15 rounds, but Humphries said they would keep on their toes ahead of finals.

“We haven’t played any of the other top four clubs with their full line-up at this point in time, so we haven’t seen the best of Milawa, Benalla or Whorouly so it’s a bit of an unknown,” she said.

“We’ve been quite lucky

to this point with our injuries and unavailabilities to have not had that happen against those clubs, but it’s had an effect on them against us.

“We really don’t know how those teams line up with their strongest seven.”

Humphries said she wanted to thank all the coaches and teammates she’s played with over the years to help her reach the milestone.

Current Greta coach and teammate, Loren Gathercole, had nothing but praise for her friend and mentor.

“Lindsey has been a huge part of the club for many years - a lot of the club’s success is a credit to the hard work she’s put into the club,” Gathercole said.

“Not only is she an incredibly talented netballer, but she’s the kind of person every club wants.

“We are thankful she is still such a huge part of the club, and we are honoured to be able to experience this moment with her and play alongside her for her 300th.”

The Blues take on Whorouly this weekend at the Whorouly Recreation Reserve, with the A grade match starting at 2.30pm.

IT’S the rematch the whole league has been looking forward to, and tomorrow, it’s here - Milawa and Bright face off once again.

The two titans of the O&K have had some incredible matches over the years, most recently back in round seven of this year, which saw the Mountain Men hand an undermanned Milawa their first loss in years.

Revenge and redemption will be at the forefront of the Demons’ minds when they run out at 2pm at Pioneer Park in Bright.

“We are very excited to play Bright again, hopefully we can play better than the last time we met and show some improvement,” Milawa coach Ricky Petts said.

“Bright are always hard to play up there so we are expecting a very competitive game.

“We were undermanned the first time we played and suffered some in game injuries that limited our rotations so I am hoping that we will be a bit healthier this time around.

“We are hopeful to get a few players back from injury which will be nice, but as has been the theme this year, we seem to lose players each week as well.

“Unfortunately we will be without speedster Nick Giggins for a few weeks due to breaking his collarbone in last weekend’s

clash with Whorouly.

“Nick had been having an outstanding year, breaking into our midfield and adding some dash to our team - he will be missed in the coming weeks.”

The Demons currently sit at fourth on the ladder, six points behind the second placed Bright, but with a handful of matches left before finals, Petts said he was confident his side could continue to rise.

“The next two weeks are huge for us, playing the top two sides (Bright and Benalla All Blacks),” he said.

“There is still a chance that we can get into the second spot, but we just want to play better than we had the first time that we met these clubs and show that improvement, that will give us some confidence heading into the end of the year.

“It is still possible to make second spot so we are going to aim for that, but the next two weeks will define where we sit.

“We are confident that we can get a few more players healthy before the end of the year and make a real push into finals.”

In other round 16 matches around the area, the Lions will look for a scalp over Greta at home, Moyhu take on Benalla All Blacks, King Valley travel over to North Wangaratta to play the Hawks, and the Bulldogs head out to Goorambat.

After a 1-all draw against Twin City on Wednesday night in a catch-up match, the Devils now come up against league leaders Cobram at South Wangaratta Reserve where a win could see them return to second.

Wangaratta has plenty of motivation this time around after falling to the Roar 2-3 in round three.

“The next couple of weeks are huge,” Vasilevski said.

“If we beat Cobram and then beat (Albury) United the week after we’re going to be in a great position.

“It’s going to be a challenge but we can do it.”

The Devils were left wondering what could have been in round three after missed opportunities ruined their chances of victory.

“Our last game was a bit of a weird one, we just missed our chances,” Vasilevski said.

“We created plenty of opportunities but didn’t convert so, hopefully, this time we can take our chances.”

Superstar Cobram winger Spiros Vourgaslis will be in the back of the Devils’ minds.

“All their scoring avenues seem to go through Spiros,” Vasilevski said.

“He’s definitely a player we need to be wary of, he’s really good on a wing for them.”

“With div two, I’m really hopeful that we’re going to do really well.

“We want to get a cup this year, the last time div two won a cup was close to 10 years ago, so we want to bring the cup home to Wangaratta.”

FOR Wangaratta this weekend is just about doing the basics right against North Albury at Norm Minns Oval as they charge towards September.

With just six weeks until finals, the Magpies are looking to build towards their best form after a topsy-turvy patch through the middle of the season.

“We just want to continue to play our best footy,” Wangaratta coach Ben Reid said.

“We need to continue to build to a position where

we hit our best form in four or five weeks time.”

Although Wangaratta will be incredibly short favourites at the start of the game, the Hoppers put up a strong showing against the third placed Albury last weekend.

In a reasonably tight contest the Tigers only got up by 23 points.

“They put in a good performance last weekend so we’re not going to rock up and expect to be facing the same team as we did earlier on,” Reid said.

“They’ve got some new additions (including former St Kilda player Doultan Langlands) and we’ve got to make sure we turn up.

“We don’t want to get lazy and fall into bad habits, we need to do our good things well.”

The Magpies are still going to be without a few key players with Dylan Van Berlo

expected to miss another week with injury, while Reid is also unavailable for this weekend’s match after being suspended for one game.

“VB (Van Berlo) will be another week away and I’m out as well so there’s going to be a chance for a couple of ressies players to come up,” Reid said.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity to blood a few new players and give them an opportunity to play senior footy.”

With Reid out, Cal Moore is expected to play pre-

dominantly forward after spending some time in the midfield over the past couple of weeks.

“Cal’s been playing both high and deep (forward) recently and also in the midfield but he’ll probably play more forward this weekend,” Reid said.

“He kicked one goal four last week so he’ll be keen to bounce back but he’ll play wherever we need him.

“We’ve got the two rucks in as well (Chris Knowles and Zac Leitch) and ‘Leitchy’ is a capable for-

ward so he’s another player that can play forward while I’m out.”

Leitch booted two majors last weekend as he looks to cement his spot in the senior team in the back half of the year.

“His last month of training has been really solid,” Reid said.

“We asked him to really knuckle down because when he’s playing his best footy he’s a really important player for us.”

Tomorrow’s game starts at 2pm.

By WILLSON MACK WANGARATTA netballers will be eyeing redemption tomorrow when they face North Albury at Norm Minns Oval.

The ‘Pies fell to the Hoppers by 12 goals in their round four encounter and will be well and truly wanting to make up for that display.

In their last clash it was North Albury’s Nat Heagney who troubled Wangaratta’s defenders, shooting 32 goals.

Magpies’ defenders Hannah Grady and Katie Dean will be keeping a close eye on the Hoppers’ rising star this time around.

Meanwhile, Wangaratta Rovers will have their work cut out for them when they face the third placed Yarrawonga at JC Lowe Oval.

The Hawks have managed just the one victory this season, while the Pigeons have shown glimpses of what they’re capable of as they look to push deep into finals.

Wangaratta Rovers got relatively close to the Pigeons last time though, falling by just eight goals in one of their best performances for the year.

Both matches start at 2pm.

The Hawks are firing themselves up to play the highly rated Yarrawonga at JC Lowe Oval as they look to keep their top three chances alive.

It won’t be an easy feat though with the Pigeons only dropping two games this season, but one of them was against Wangaratta Rovers earlier on in the year.

Wangaratta Rovers operations manager Barry Sullivan believes tomorrow is a crucial game.

“It’s going to be a huge game,” Sullivan said.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to prove to ourselves and the competition that we are a capable side.

“They’re obviously super strong and they’re one of the two or three teams that are in the mix so it’s going to be a great test.”

The Hawks reigned supreme by three points in their round four clash against the Pigeons but Michael Gibbons didn’t line up for the opposing side.

Yarrawonga will be without power

forward Leigh Williams who is out with a fractured vertebrae but that didn’t seem to hurt his side too much last weekend as they grabbed a massive 57 point victory over Myrtleford.

The massive ground of JC Lowe Oval will only add to an already exciting clash with both side’s known for their work on the outside of the contest.

“I think the ground conditions are going to be great for both sides outside run,” Sullivan said.

“We’re a good running side but Yarrawonga are as well.

“It’s going to be awesome match up in the midfield.”

Wangaratta Rovers’ midfielders Dylan Stone, Brodie Filo and Sam Carpenter will need to stand up against the likes of Gibbons, Willie Wheeler and Mark Whiley A victory to the Hawks would go a long way in their quest for a top three finish as they sit a win outside.

“A win will certainly help us finish in the top three but at the end of the day a loss won’t destroy our chances either,” Sullivan said.

Tomorrow’s game starts at 2pm.

While the recent win over Greta featuring Brendon Goddard was a massive boost for the club, Warren’s said his fondest match memory came earlier.

“The Goddard one is up there, but the first game against Moyhu last year, that was probably one of the better days, one of the better wins,” he said.

“They hadn’t won in 90-something games, they were on a massive losing streak and we managed to beat Moyhu by 37 points.

“There were tears in people’s eyes, there were tears of joy - that was probably one of the best days but obviously the Goddard game because no one gave us a chance.”

Warren will spend the rest of the season coaching from the sidelines after breaking his collarbone against Greta - North Wangaratta host King Valley tomorrow in their round 16 match.

The TAC’s partnership with AFL Victoria provides the perfect platform to speak directly to thousands of Victorians who

Warren’s siren sounds North Wangaratta g coach set to depart p at season’s end after three yyears at the helm NORTH Wangaratta senior coach Josh Warren will leave the role and the Hawks’ Nest at the end of the season after three years with the club.

Making the announcement on Wednesday, Warren said it was the right time to move on, wanting to spend more time with his family.

“I take my coaching pretty seriously, and I just don’t have the time I’ve had the previous three years, so for the betterment of the footy club and also myself, if you’re not 100 per cent in it, then you shouldn’t be doing it,” he said.

“It’s only five minutes out of town, so blokes who want to coach, instead of going out to other football clubs further up the road, there’s no better spot than North Wangaratta.

“I’m pretty certain all the guys will re-sign, there’s nobody retiring, and we’ve built a pretty good nucleus now, so the person who comes in will be able to push us further up the ladder straightaway - they won’t have to rebuild because the rebuild has already been done.
