EXPLOSIONS REPORTED AMID PARFITT ROAD BLAZE By RYAN MALCOLM A FIRE which broke out following a series of explosions at the rear of the Parfitt Road Plaza saw the evacuation of a number of businesses yesterday morning. Firefighting crews and a technical response vehicle were called to the plaza shortly after 11:30am, when they located a blaze which was promptly extinguished. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing the sound of “firecrackers” before plumes of black smoke began emanating from the rear of the business, where a number of tents and assorted belongings were located by responding firefighters. The scene was declared under control by 11:52am, with the scene ultimately handed over to Victoria Police. ‘Dangerous drivers’ TWO speedsters have had their vehicles impounded by local officers as holidaymakers flocked to the region over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. Local police were deployed throughout the region’s major thoroughfares over the fourday statewide Operation Regal, in an effort to curb risk-taking and dangerous behaviour around the gateway to the state’s alpine region. A 23-year-old Sydney woman was detected travelling at speeds of up to 176kph southbound on

was intercepted travelling at up to 152kph also near Glenrowan, while under the influence of drugs. A total of 95 offences were detected by Wangaratta police officers throughout the weekend, according to Senior Sergeant Colin Provan of Wangaratta Highway Patrol. “There were no collisions in the area which is good - I didn’t hear of any issues up at Mount Hotham and Falls Creek,” he said. “There was some pretty good work by highway
patrol members to catch some dangerous drivers. “Police met their commitment to preliminary breath test (PBT) sites there were a number of sites set up throughout the weekend which carried out a total of 1395 PBTs. “We were very active and vigilant in enforcing drugs and alcohol legislation.” Some 158 offences were recorded throughout Eastern Region Division 4, which encompasses Wangaratta, Cobram and Wodonga regions.
Nine drivers were intercepted under the influence of drugs or alcohol within the division. A number of police operations this year have targeted the ‘fatal five’ of distracted driving, impaired driving, fatigued driving, speeding and failure to wear a seatbelt. Despite an influx of vehicles into the alpine region from Friday, Snr Sgt Provan said police had been largely pleased with what they had seen on
