FESTIVAL REVIVAL Return of Jazz and Blues Festival continues to ggain momentum with November target g set
A REVIVAL of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues continues to grow momentum as a target date is set. Chairing the meetings has been local performer and festival enthusiast Andrew Nunn, who said as it stands, it was aimed to have a festival of some capacity for the Melbourne Cup weekend in November 2024. A third public interest meeting regarding the festival
in the plans to reinvigorate the nationally recognised event of the past 33 years. Mr Nunn said the current group is looking to organise sub committees and future board members leading into the current committee’s AGM, which was slated for February 13, 14 or 15. Current chair of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues committee, David Fuller, said he has been working closely with the

leading members of the steering committee to ensure a smooth handover if a new board is formed at next month’s meeting. “It’s important to get people’s interests defined because there’s a large group starting to grow and to help prep and plan some of these committee’s work on some things in the background,” he said. “For example I highly recommended a fundraising
sub-committee, somebody who’s going to look at getting out there and sourcing some funding, whether that be private sponsorship or philanthropic.” Mr Fuller said the only thing stopping a new board being formed at the AGM would be the same difficulties faced by any committee across the volunteer spectrum; time, ability to commit and the unknown. “It’s a daunting process to
put on a festival and albeit last year was at a smaller scale, it’s still daunting for a small group to put together something that appeases all the community,” he said. While the ‘last hurrah’ 2023 version of the festival was scaled back compared to its former years, strong crowds still attended the event, indicating the appetite for music in the rural city was still there. ■ Continued page 2
