Pages 13-23
By SIMONE KERWIN A YEAR 12 cohort whose entire senior years were completed during the pandemic learnt the outcome of its labours urs on Monday, when VCE (Victorian Certificate ate of Education) results were released. Students were able to check their scoress from 7am, and many were poring over laptops as soon as they could, to see how they’d fared in their final years of secondary ry school. Among them were the duxes of Wangaratta ratta High School (Lara Corsini), Cathedral College lege Wangaratta (Alice Kjar) and Galen Catholicc College (Brodie Watson). Alice Kjar, 17 (pictured), said she had felt a mixture of happiness and relief when she sought out her results, to discover she‘d recorded an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) of 99.05. “I was really happy,” she said. Alice took part in the Kwong Lee Dow Young oung Scholars Program (an academic enrichment ent program designed to support high–achieving ving Victorian students), which she said had helped her explore her educational options ns and meet like–minded fellow students. A Cathedral College House captain, she e said finding a balance between her studies es and other interests – including martial arts rts and assisting with junior tennis – had been en the key to her year 12 year. ■ Continued page age 2

$11.7m injection is ‘great for city’ WANGARATTA High School is eagerly awaiting further news of the $11.7 million pledged pre-election by the State Government, for development of its Edwards Street campus. “We don’t have anything concrete yet; we’re awaiting more information,” WHS

principal Dave Armstrong said. “But given that the
school’s going so well, the idea of further investment in the school will be good for our students, and good for the town. “I think the town should be excited too; when we have great schools with great facilities, it brings
a lot of choice. “I recognise, too, the importance of Wangaratta High School to the city, as its only public secondary school.” With the expected high school development, along with building works currently under way at
Galen Catholic College; additions to facilities at Cathedral College’s Murdoch Road campus over recent years; and Borinya Wangaratta Community Partnership having recently opened its new learning centre, Wangaratta is
well-placed in terms of secondary school offerings. Add to that the prospect of a new Wangaratta technical school - another pre-election promise from the returned State Government - and the future looks bright for secondary education in the rural city. ■ Continued page 2
