City under threat Emergency g y service crews brace for first major j flood event in more than a decade MAJOR flooding is expected to hit Wangaratta in the coming days, following torrential downpours which saw significant concerns throughout the North East yesterday. 120mm overnight. SES incident controller Brendan Corboy said local emergency service crews were bracing for what would be the rural city’s most damaging flooding event in years.
“We’re preparing for major flooding in Wangaratta at this point,” he said yesterday. “We’re expecting all that water to flow through the system with additional rainfall tonight of up to 75mm widespread across the catchment - we’ll see river rises with that. “At the moment the majority of the forecast
rainfall has fallen in the Goulburn and Broken River catchment, but that extra 75mm is expected to come across later in our patch tonight (Thursday).” Flooding events had already been reported at Chiltern, Benalla, Rutherglen and Wangandary yesterday afternoon, while a flash flooding alert was issued for Swanpool,
Lima, Badaginnie and Warrenbayne around midday. Mr Corboy said SES were working with rural city council to establish an evacuation point in the Wangaratta CBD if conditions worsened overnight, with major floodwaters also expected to make their way along the Ovens River from Bright in the coming days.
Residents under threat will be able to attend SES Wangaratta’s Handley Street headquarters this afternoon, with crews dispensing sandbags free of charge. Mr Corboy said minimising risk in the face of the wet conditions was vital, with particular concern around roadside red gum trees. ■ Continued page 3
