The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast 1015mm for Wangaratta on each day, tomorrow and Friday, and another 8-15mm on Saturday.

BIG SHOW BACK PREPARATIONS are well under way for the 2022 Wangaratta Show, which will return on October 7 and 8, following two years impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.

The 2020 and ‘21 shows were cancelled due to uncertainty around the pandemic - the first times the Wangaratta Show had been unable to be held since World War 2.

The show’s popular fireworks display will again be part of the fun, and will decorate Wangaratta’s skies from about 8.30pm on the Friday night, signalling for many locals the event’s long-awaited return.

In the lead-up to the fireworks, show patrons

will be entertained by family-owned freestyle motocross act All4FMX, comprising Victorian brothers Mitch and Harry Van Vliet.

The Van Vliets have raced dirt bikes and quad bikes their whole lives, and when they saw a gap in the freestyle motocross scene, decided to take

their quads to the ramps.

Since then, they have travelled to shows throughout Australia, as well as being part of the Monster Jam tour.

All4FMX will perform on the arena on the Friday of the show from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

Due to a large number of enquiries last year, dog

high jumping is back on the agenda at this year’s show, and will run from 6.30pm on the Friday on the Wangaratta Showgrounds arena.

The Swagzters musical group will perform on Friday and Saturday, as will Me’n’Me Mates, a ‘beaut’ group focused on celebrating Australian songs and stories.

Wangaratta Show to return with a bang next month

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: Karah Wright from Animals of Oz is looking forward to being part of this year’s Wangaratta Show entertainment, as the event returns following two years impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Animals of Oz gives audiences the chance to discover the differences and uniqueness of some of Australia’s amazing wildlife.

Another newcomer to the show is HoopSparx, a hula hoop performer who will offer interactive ‘hoopy’ play spaces, and conduct roving performances around the venue, promising fitness, friendship, giggles and hula hoops.

Animals of Oz, a mobile wildlife education program, will be at the show on both days, giving audiences the chance to get close to, interact with, and learn about many of the furry, feathery and scaly inhabitants of the Australian bush.

For those keen for more up-closeand-personal time with animals, the popular animal nursery will again be a feature of the event.

The show’s horse program has been altered again this year, with expectations of even larger numbers of horses at the event, while the all-breeds cattle show will offer a $500 cash prize

for the supreme beef exhibit.

There will also be alpacas, a sheep show, pigeons and poultry.

The all-breeds dairy heifer show, which was well-supported in 2019, is on again on the Saturday, with some excellent prizes on offer.

In the pavilions, there are sections for all ages, encompassing cookery, jams, jellies and preserves, craft, needlework, art, photography, horticulture and fleece.

The salami competition was also well-supported in 2019, and will return with a new ‘jerky’ section.

Elsewhere, the Warby Steam Engine Club will return to the show, and will be situated near the Gray Street gate, with the Fergie Club of old tractors attending on the Saturday, located near the sheep pavilion.

An EFTPOS machine for admittance fees will be available at the Green Street gate, and will operate between 2pm and 7pm on Friday, and between 10am and 2pm on Saturday.

The Wangaratta Show is drug and alcohol free, with no alcohol permitted into the venue.

The schedule for the show is now available online at www.wangarattashow.org.au and from the show office, and locals can also keep track of the event on its Facebook page.

Now is the time to be thinking about entries in the various sections of the show, with most entries closing on September 30.

The show office is now open each weekday between 10am and 3pm (phone 5721 3280) for further information.

MORE than 200 vintage car enthusiasts from all across Australia are on their way to Wangaratta in two weeks’ time for the 2022 National Chrysler Rally.

Preparations are in place for the near 120 vintage pre-1980 Chryslers to call Wangaratta home for a week from September 25 to October 2.

Since 1976 the Chrysler rally has presented a chance for members of the three big Chrysler Restorers Clubs in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia to merge on a shared location and share their passions for vintage cars every three years.

One of the event organisers and club member, Mark Fenton, has been going to National Chrysler Rallies since 2006 in his 1947 Desoto, a model his parents used to own.

He said the three years of preparation has served up many challenges, but he has enjoyed putting it all together.

“Everything is going very well; we’ve had really good support from council events department, the suppliers and the various vendors that we’ve organised for it so we’re pretty happy,” he said.

“Some of the people have been coming along to many of the rallies; we’ve got three people who have been to all 16 rallies and 23 people who are attending their first rallies.

“It’s good because it’s not only a chance for people to see the cars of people who live in the other states, we get a chance to catch up with people we’ve met over the years, sometimes just to get information about the cars and other times to get parts and advice from, it’s been good.”

Throughout the week vintage car owners will be visiting tourism hotspots in the area such as the Beechworth silo art and the Swanpool Cinema, incorporating a Ned Kelly theme to the event while using the Oaks, Wangaratta as the central hub.

Mr Fenton said the rally will also focus on discovering and visiting private car collections in the area to see first-hand the

“It’s that sort of passion which is the reason we’re visiting these collections, it’s not because they’re mind blowing, fantastic museum collections, but it’s about celebrating the passion some people maintain and the effort they put in to preserve Australia’s heritage, that’s what we’re focusing on this rally,” he said.

The main event will be the display day on the Saturday, initially planned to be at Apex Park but will now be at the HP Barr Reserve, adjacent to the netball courts.

Mr Fenton said the rally’s marquee event often brings locals to reminisce in cars they may have wished for or even owned themselves.

“People get a pleasure out of seeing older cars and it’s not often you get to see some of these models, some of the cars we’ve got there’s only one in Australia left, some of them are even unique across the world,” he said.

“It’s a good chance to get them out and get everybody educated that these cars are there and depending on what vintage or era they remember, there’s sure to

be a car there that they will remember from their childhood.”

Mr Fenton said some of the cars coming to town have been owned since new.

“Couple, Jeff and Marg McQueen, will be there in their Valiant that they got married in, where their kids grew up in, where they went on holidays in and now it’s the car that’s looked after and comes on these sorts of rallies and events and that’s what they enjoy, so you can’t get rid of it,” he said.

“Even our event director John Plowman is coming along in his 1948 Dodge, which is the car he got married in.”

Houses hopeful of volunteering boost

NEIGHBOURHOOD Houses are hopeful increased funding can help recruit more people to come to the community’s aide, and help overcome a hesitancy in volunteerism experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Local organisations say they’ve felt the impact of a volunteer shortage, reflected through social surveys by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and 2021 Census data recording a 19 per cent drop in volunteering since the last snapshot in 2016.

But Trish Curtis, coordinator for Upper Murray Neighbourhood Houses Network, hopes more than $200,000 in State Government funding for six houses in the region will help.

Ms Curtis said volunteers cover one third of the community value of $1.17m placed on neighbourhood houses in the region, and believes more flexible methods of volunteering will help attract those willing to help.

“I think it’s been changing slowly, as people are getting more prepared to come back in and do things, put their hand up

to volunteer,” she said.

“I think finding different ways for people to volunteer, maybe short term ways to make it so people don’t feel like it’s something they have to keep doing.”

Open Door Neighbourhood House Wangaratta has put out expressions of interest for volunteer roles in recent weeks.

Coordinator Loretta Waters said it’s been difficult to keep the house operating with staff working long hours and they are starting to feel the pinch.

“Over the last 18 months we’ve been working really hard to try and alleviate the pressures our community has faced,” she said.

“When we’ve gone into this ‘COVID normal’ it’s not actually given anyone reprieve, they’ve been working solidly for years and they’re just starting to get to the burnout point.”

Ms Waters said as well as cur-

rent volunteers burning out they are seeing a reluctance from people who want to come in and help.

The Centre Wangaratta has been helping community members find roles in volunteering and the workforce for nearly 60 years.

Chief executive officer Sue Gaels said the locals who have stayed loyal to volunteering within the community now face many time-constraints and fears about re-entering their roles in volunteering.

“So often volunteers are the elder people in our community so they’re a more vulnerable population so they’re more cautious about going back,” she said.

Ms Curtis said houses who received the latest round of increased funding will now be able to put more resources in recruiting new volunteers, although it still may be difficult.

“It’s quite hard to recruit people, it’s quite a lot of management training that’s involved, it is quite resource intensive, people volunteer in roles for different reasons,” she said.

Ms Waters has seen the highly

stressful living circumstances over recent years have a flow on effect on people’s willingness to volunteer.

“We are very supportive of people recuperating and creating balance in their life, as we recognise burn out and fatigue to be significant for everyone currently,” she said.

“At the same time, we cannot escape the impact this is having within our organisation by not having the same access to volunteers.

“Services like ours can only operate with high levels of volunteerism as funding never matches the work that we do.”

Ms Gaels said allowing more flexibility for people wanting to volunteer and thoughtfulness could spark.

“We’re finding that a lot of people want to work part-time not full-time, finding the right balance for their family,” she said.

“I think everybody being kind to each other is what we need to do, not just in our workplace and volunteering but in society as a whole.”

THE Well Ageing Info Hub together with Northeast Health Wangaratta will present a free public information session on Centrelink Financial Information Services (FIS) in Wangaratta next week.

The session is ideal for older people, their family members and/or carers, to help:  understand your own financial affairs and options;  financial planning;  understand what happens when you move into aged care;  roles of financial professionals and,  how to maximise your benefits.

RBA the first to face MP scrutiny THE House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics will hold a public hearing with the Governor of the Reserve Bank (RBA), Philip Lowe, this Friday.

Committee chair, Dr Daniel Mulino MP, said that with Australia experiencing its highest inflation in 20 years, household budgets are feeling the pressure.

“Australians have also seen interest rates rise for the past five months, which not only affects mortgage holders and families but small businesses and investment, too,” he said.

“In this context, continuing scrutiny of our monetary policy settings remains important, particularly in view of the need to learn from past decisions.

“Accordingly, the committee will probe the recent decisions of the RBA regarding interest rate policy, the challenges of tackling our high inflation, and the RBA’s approach to returning inflation to the two to three per cent range over time.

“The committee hearing will thus complement, not replicate, the work of the Independent Review of the Reserve Bank announced by the treasurer in July.”

Dr Mulino noted that the first independent review of the Reserve Bank in four decades would be conducted in the face of challenging economic circumstances, the likes of which Australia had not seen for generations, ensuring the RBA remains fit for purpose in the longer term is critical.

National high score was a highlight of season opener

By SIMONE KERWIN WANGARATTA hosted 10 teams competing in the North East and Southern Riverina VEX Robotics season opener on Saturday, with one combination registering the nation’s highest score this season.

Teams from Scots School Albury, Galen Catholic College and Wangaratta Primary School tested their skills against the Australian champions, Border Robotics Club of Albury.

The VEX robotics competition is all about collaboration and strategy, with two teams working together to gain the highest scores possible.

This year’s VEX IQ Challenge, ‘SlapShot’, requires the teams’ robots to remove discs from various contraptions, then push the discs into scoring zones.

Two teams are randomly chosen for each match, and during Saturday’s event, each team had seven matches, partnering with a different team each time.

“This is where strategy and communication

comes in,” Galen teacher Brett Webber, who with fellow teacher Maree Timms organised Saturday’s competition, said.

“We find the teams that have the greatest success are the ones which work out a good strategy, by being able to communicate the strengths and weaknesses of their robots.

“Once the students get this important concept, the scores tend to be much higher.”

New to VEX and taking part in its first competition, the Wangaratta Primary team caught onto this quickly.

Wangaratta Primary students Caleb Gillies, Mark Henscke and Dan Wilson said they didn’t have a lot of time to build their robot and learn about the game before the competition, but soon realised their robot was great at pushing discs, so devised a strategy to capitalise on this.

The team’s highest score on the day was 63 points, when they worked with the Galen team.

Border Robotics was a stand-out, and won the excellence award as the top

team on the day, displaying high level teamwork, communication and robot skills in both design and driving.

Team members were also great role models, and shared their knowledge with the new teams.

The winning combination in the finals was Border Robotics and Galen Team B, who worked together to gain a high score of 83 points.

During the qualifying matches, Scots School Team E and Galen Team B gained the highest official score in Australia - 89 points.

Although it is only early days in the new VEX Robotics season, this topped the previous Australian high score of 82 points, recorded in a competition held in Melbourne two weeks ago.

“Once again, our region is holding its own against city counterparts,” Ms Timms said.

“Such a great start to the season, and we can only get better from here.”

The next competition will be held at Galen on Saturday, October 8 from 9.30am to 1pm.

Funding to bring inclusive upgrades to shooting club

WANGARATTA Clay Target Club has received $45,862 in funding as a part of the State Government’s Shooting Sports Facilities Program to help make the club ground more inclusive to members of all abilities.

Club vice-president Brian Reid said the funds will help build a sun smart porch extension, add concrete pathways to the club’s three shooting grounds and improve the clubrooms with a much larger and even levelled concrete floor.

Mr Reid believes the upgrades will help create more interest in shooting for people with mobility issues.

“We’ll be able to provide them with an easier and safer way to walk across to the shooting grounds, in conjunction with our wheelchair access to the club rooms and multi-use toilet already installed,” he said.

“The club’s very conscious of promoting the sport to people who have mobility issues because it’s a sport they can do.”

The club has been approached by The Centre for Continuing Education Wangaratta to be a part of their access all abilities program, encourag-

fun and they all go away smiling because generally they hit a target, it really makes their day and it’s terrific to see,” he said.

“They can’t necessarily do other sports which require physical exertion, but they can do this which is great for them and great for us.”

GRANTS to help regional communities protect themselves against future droughts are now open for applications.

Minister for Emergency Management, Murray Watt, said the Community Impact Program under the Helping Regional Communities Prepare for Drought Initiative, provides community-based organisations grants of between $200,000 and $500,000 to strengthen networks, capabilities and facilities that support drought preparedness.

The grants are available across 35 regions nationally, including the Ovens Murray.

Successful applicants will also be able to access tailored leadership development support for their communities.

Senator Raff Ciccone said the grants can be used in a range of ways, including events, training, capability building and small infrastructure projects.

Show time tradition set for return ONE of the most missed events on the local calendar, the Wangaratta Show returns on October 7 and 8 with a bumper program of events and entertainment.

The full details feature in our front page story but even the thought of fireworks, dog-jumping, side show alley and the pavilion of competitions is enough to excite the stomach.

You can almost smell the Dagwood dogs and animal nursery.

The show was cancelled for two years due to the pandemic, the first time since WWII, and for many of the organisers, entrants and regulars it left a gaping hole in their lives.

We have seen an overwhelming return of crowds to many events, live entertainment in particular, as people seem to be making up for lost time and we hope and trust the same will be for the show.

After spending so much time on screens and streaming services, many Australians have learned there is no substitute for live action and there’s a fair chance events like the show and sporting finals are reflecting that.

Full houses at Wangaratta Players stage production of the Rise and Fall of Little Voice further confirmed people are getting back to really living their lives.

In fact, why not go one better and get involved yourself.

Whether it’s volunteering at a club or organisation or entering one of the competitions at the show, there is always a place for someone willing to help out and be a part of team.

Time to discuss the republic now THE Queen’s passing, as sad as it is, should stimulate debate in respect to Australia becoming a republic in order to achieve Australia’s constitutional independence.

The Monarchy has served Australia extremely well, however, now is the time for change.

Given the passage of time, Australia should now take steps to sever the apron strings on so-called ‘Mother England’.

Surely, the time is now right after some 230 years of colonisation that Australia changes its governance.

All Australians should play a role in deciding who our head of state should be.

A republican movement was initially developed by the Kelly Gang, approximately 140 years ago, possibly before the raid at Jeriliderie, but probably after it, at the same time that the First Boer War in South Africa occurred.

After all, the late Queen did support the right of Australians to become a fully independent nation during the referendum on an Australian Republic in 1999.

The future of the Monarchy in Australia is an issue for the Australian people, and we alone can only decide by democratic and constitutional means in respect to our future direction.

Variety’s Bash celebrates record breaking total VARIETY Victoria’s Bash celebrated its 30th anniversary this year with a record breaking $1.9M in funds raised to support kids living with disability, disadvantage, or illness.

Over the 30-year history, the Variety Victoria Bash has raised more than $31 million in funds for kids including this year’s $1.9 million fundraising total setting a record for the charity.

In a year when many are doing it tough, we are blown away by the kindness and generosity from all the participants, volunteers, and donors of the Variety Victoria Bash, who are part of the family of supporters who recognise how powerful it can be to give and help locally.

This year’s epic trip saw the Variety Victoria Bash stop at some of Australia’s most iconic places, including Broken Hill, Karumba, Birdsville and even the Walkabout Pub- Crocodile Dundee’s watering hole!

The charity convoy visited local schools and organisations to deliver grants valued over $150,000, including $46,000 distributed to primary schools and sporting clubs

in Euroa, Chiltern, Rutherglen, and Wahgunyah.

It injected over $100,000 into a local community per night when it stopped for fuel, snacks, meals, and accommodation.

Everywhere they went, the 350 people strong Bash ‘brigade’ in 130 colourful themed cars created a celebration and was welcomed because of the fun and colour they brought, spending in local communities and the kids cheered and helped along the way.

Funds raised from this year’s recordbreaking Bash will contribute to much needed equipment and resources for children in Victoria.

A TRAGIC experience when Maree Parkinson saw the terrible death of a dog from neglect in Wangaratta has turned into a positive for animals in need.

Maree channelled her anger and distress into organising a fundraising campain for animal rescue group Dunroamin, which is based on the border.

Through her efforts and that of caring local businesses, Maree has raised $343.85 from collection tins at Shelley’s Bakery, Butler’s Pantry, Madame Espresso and Appin Street Milk Bar. “I am so grateful to all the caring people who have put money in the Dunroamin donation tins

LOCAL author Margaret Hickey took out the Danger Prize at the annual BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival on Friday, for her novel ‘Cutters End’.

To celebrate its fifth year, the Danger Prize was relaunched in 2022 to honour books featuring Australia as a setting for stories about crime and justice; previously, the prize focused on works set around Sydney crime.

Entries this year showcased the range and breadth of Australian crime fiction, and were set in a diverse range of locations.

Crime thriller ‘Cutters End’, set in the South Australian outback, was released in August last year.

It followed the success of Margaret’s collection of short stories, ‘Rural Dreams’, and is her second published novel, after a small press produced a historical fiction work several years ago.

In ‘Cutters End’, readers were introduced to the character of Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Ariti, as

Margaret was announced and interviewed during the BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival, on Friday evening.

She was presented with the Danger Prize trophy and her $1000 prize by previous winner Gary Jubelin, whose chilling autobiography ‘I Catch Killers’ shared the prize in 2021 with Chris Hammer’s powerful novel ‘Trust’.

Wangaratta District Specialist School STUDENTS Holly Sinclair and Tamara Lord have spent every Monday for the last five week engaging in Structure Workplace Learning (SWL) at the Wangaratta Library.

The team at the library have shown Holly and Tamara how to borrow and return books, set up displays, shelve books, cover books and create book bags in themes for young children to borrow and take home.

Tamara and Holly have enjoyed all aspects of the library and gained valuable workplace skills.

Surf camp fun Appin Park Primary School YEAR 5/6 students travelled to Lorne last week to spend four days learning about safety when visiting beaches, and the beach craft of boogie boarding and surfing.

Henty field days showcasing best agriculture has to offer SOUTHERN Australia’s single biggest agricultural event, the Henty Machinery Field Days, is back with all the latest technology plus added live entertainment for the family.

The agribusiness super event is scheduled for September 20-22 and will showcase more than $158 million worth of agricultural machinery and products to the nation and the world.

HMFD chief executive officer Belinda Anderson said the program had been expanded this year with a country music spectacular with headline acts Brooke McClymont, Adam Eckersley and Danny Phegan performing on the Wednesday night.

Mrs Anderson said the new free event would be a separate ticketed concert on Wednesday from 5.30pm behind the Farm Gate pavilion, with entry tickets booked online on the HMFD website.

The free entertainment has been made possible by a grant submitted by Greater Hume Council to the NSW Government for the Reconnecting Regional NSW - Community Events Program.

“The field days will have all the usual attractions including the prestigious Henty

Machine of the Year Award, the working sheep dog trials, Country Lifestyle pavilion, Farm Gate Produce Market, Baker Seeds agronomy trials, helicopter joy rides, live entertainment, outdoor reptile show, the Natural Fibre Fashion Awards and vintage farm machinery display,” Mrs Anderson said.

“We expect the strong demand for all agricultural machinery, livestock handling equipment and fencing materials to continue through 2022 and, combined with the focus on regional Australia with the public’s keenness to get out and about, will auger well for a successful 2022 Henty Machinery Field Days.”

This year Henty celebrates its long and proud association with the Country Women’s Association and recognises the organisation’s centenary by having CWA NSW State President Joy Beames officially open the 2022 field days.

The official opening will include the presentation of the prestigious Henty Machine of the Year Award.

Greater Hume Council will sponsor the Best Australian Designed and Manufactured Machine to be presented on Thursday, September 22.

A world-class education shouldn’t depend on your postcode With KIARA RUGGIERO FROM next year, students at La Trobe University’s AlburyWodonga Campus will be able to train as early childhood, primary or secondary school teachers with the introduction of the Bachelor of Education.

La Trobe ViceChancellor Professor John Dewar AO said the expansion of the Bachelor of Education offering will help address the critical teacher workforce shortage and increase access to teaching qualifications for students in regional Victoria.

“We know that across the country this critical workforce is under strain - and this is particularly being felt in rural and regional areas,” Professor Dewar said.

“Our expanded Bachelor of Education means students across

much of regional Victoria can stay close to home while studying - saving time and money and making it more likely they will consider a career in teaching.”

From 2023, students studying the Bachelor of Education will complete core first-year subjects and then choose a specialisation in year two.

This gives students the flexibility to try teaching at all levels before deciding to specialise in early childhood, primary or secondary teaching.

Students who don’t quite meet the Bachelor of Education prerequisites can transition into an accredited teaching degree through the Diploma of Teacher Education and Associate Degree of Teacher Education.

Making their gap year count locally CONNEX Group offer a unique gap year and cadetship program which gives young people the chance to remain living locally, while gaining experience in the construction industry.

Connex Group is a multi-disciplinary company which provides engineering design consultancy and a specialist workshop fabrication modelling service.

Cadets have exposure to a client base which includes steel fabricators, structural detailers, engineers, architects and project managers and complete several short courses to add to their skill set.

They have access to the Achievement Program, a State Government health and wellbeing initiative which focuses on areas such as healthy eating, physical activity, and mental health and wellbeing.

There is potential through the Connex program for further casual and full-time employment during chosen studies, as well as an industry pathway post-study.

Connex offers the

ability to study through TAFE institutes, through a tailored Engineering Drafting Certificate 4, if the cadet chooses to follow more technical paths.

Connex Group general manager/director Kevin Feldtmann said he loved the idea of offering opportunities local young people may not otherwise have in their region.

“The program is suited to local students with an interest in visual communications, maths, engineering and project management or fabrication,” he said.

“Cadets will have their core jobs to do, but will also get out onsite with our engineers; we want to give them a broad experience in the industry.”

Three cadets started the program in 2022 through Connex’s mentor partnership with La Trobe University in Engineering.

The students have been exposed to the university’s lifestyle through campus visits and online mentorships.

Sarah Long graduated from Cathedral College Wangaratta last year.

Interested in the design and the construction industry, the program has provided a chance to work in the industry for a year and given her ideas and options for the future.

Liam Suter graduated from Wangaratta High School last year and is interested in engineering and innovation in general.

Liam wanted exposure to engineering in the workplace to confirm if it was the right career path for him and has provided him with good insight and valuable experience into not only the structural engineering and construction industry, but the ever changing modern workplace.

Ryan Falconer graduated from Galen Catholic College with an interest in the field of engineering always being the first thing he thought of when people asked him what he wanted to do when he left school.

He didn’t know what type of engineering he wanted to get into but is hoping to gain knowledge not only in structural engineering but also in the drafting and 3D modelling space.

By the end of their 12 months, the cadets will have exposure to projects from initial structural design and detailing, to fabrication, project management and site erection giving then a board understanding of the greater construction industry.

All students who participate in the Connex Group Cadetship program will receive an automatic placement into Engineering at La Trobe’s Bendigo Campus.

GROWING up in the small town of Edenhope, Georgia Baxter (19) a first year Service Technician Apprentice at O’Connors in Horsham, knows the important role that farmers and farm support services play in Australia’s economy.

After being accepted into the exclusive RedStart Apprenticeship Program at O’Connors, Georgia is proud to be part of the next-generation servicing and supporting the growth of Australian agriculture.

RedStart is a dedicated program for apprentices and trainees to take their first step in a long-term and secure career at O’Connors.

For those wanting to get started in the agricultural industry, RedStart delivers on-the-job support and mentoring from experienced and qualified supervisors, as well as specialised Case IH training in state-ofthe-art workshops and training facilities across the O’Connors Dealership Network.

All successful RedStart Apprenticeship candidates are enrolled into the Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology.

“Day-to-day I assist senior service technicians in repairing and servicing all types of machinery,” Georgia said.

“Learning from the senior technicians is really rewarding and it’s amazing how much they know - and as mentors they are a great source of information and confidence when working on high performance machinery.”

As well as on-thejob training, RedStart apprentices complete group training at TAFENSW in Wagga Wagga.

The facility has a dedicated Case IH training centre where apprentices are given skills and technical knowledge in a hands-on environment.

“Getting the opportunity to complete training and work on the latest product range from Case IH with other RedStart apprentices was a big draw card,” Georgia said.

“We integrate realworld customer servicing and simulated training at TAFENSW during our training.

“We have a partnership with Case IH who supply the latest machinery and components for the program, ensuring our students are given access to the most up-to-date and advanced equipment.”

Unique to RedStart, every student that is successful in securing an apprentice position receives a top of the range Kincrome Toolbox, filled with the tools they need, valued at $5000 so apprentices have the tools they need right from when they start work at O’Connors.

“The RedStart Program application process is easy, and the program is well organised,” Georgia said.

“There is a dedicated RedStart coordinator at O’Connors who looks after us an apprentice which is a great support.

“The toolbox incentive is a really good idea and it’s really been helpful having my own tools to do my job.

“We also undertake group training as a year level which is a great networking opportunity.

“You get to know all the other apprentices in your year level and create good professional relationships.”

When asked what she hopes to be doing in five years’ time, Georgia said she hoped to be a senior technician, teaching apprentices.

Lilly finds meaningful career ONCE a trainee through CVGT Employment, Lilly is going from strength to strength in her new full-time role in her local day surgery.

As a trainee, Lilly completed her Certificate IV in Sterilisation.

Through her strong work ethic and dedication to the traineeship, she was offered a full-time position as an instrument technician in the sterilising department.

Lilly still recalls the phone call from CVGT Employment that changed her life.

“CVGT called me and offered me the position - I cried that time, tears of joy,” Lilly said.

“I feel really proud of myself. When I went to training, it was really interesting.

“I got to know different types of surgical instruments, what the instrument’s for, and how to get them ready for the doctors to use.”

Manola, manager of the sterilising department, is happy to have Lilly on board full-time and believes Lilly’s willingness to learn is her biggest strength.

“Lilly is always eager to

learn and that’s one of the things in here that you need to have - always eager to learn, even me who’s been here for 30 years,” Manola says.

“She’s done really well with doing that and brings a nice calming, relaxed atmosphere to the place, too.”

Local students benefit from academic support THE Country Universities Centre Ovens Murray (CUC) is providing personalised support to university and higher education students in the local area with Learning Skills Advisor (LSA) Dr Roxanne Bodsworth.

Roxanne provides a wide range of face-toface academic support to students registered with the CUC, including one on one sessions and group workshops.

Roxanne has studied at five different universities and has undertaken most of her studies by distance, including her PhD, so has a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by regional students and ways to help.

She is keen to support and empower students in achieving their personal, educational and career goals, whether through guidance in assignment writing, demystifying academic language, practicing referencing, navigating university websites, time management, or just as a sounding board for frustrations and concerns.

“If qualified people remain in the region, it creates less need to attract people from outside the

The event will run this Saturday and there is plenty to see and explore in the town of Moyhu, with the Moyhu Lion’s Community Market, being held at the recreation reserve because of wet weather, on Saturday morning.

King Valley Learning Exchange coordinator Jill Graham said she realised people were keen to access affordable resources, especially with the rising cost of living.

“We’ve brought together other community organisations on a day for people to learn, share and buy bargains at the Pop-Up Op Shop,” she said.

“The King Valley Men’s Shed, Moyhu Food Share and King Valley Learning Exchange have all come together for this grand day.”

King Valley Men’s Shed will run a repair shop where a gold coin donation can get your electricals tested and tagged.

The team will be ready to help check the safety of appliances to reduce electrical risks and it will run between 11am and 1pm.

All those wanting to kick-start spring will have the opportunity to learn how to propagate plants.

WANGARATTA Senior Citizens Club will host bingo today from 1.30pm at its clubrooms in Tara Court, off Ford Street.

Carpet bowls will run on Thursday and Monday from 12 noon, with cards (euchre) on Friday from 1.30pm, and cards (500) and hoy on Tuesday, also from 1.30pm - all at the clubrooms in Tara Court, off Ford Street, or in the adjoining St Patrick’s supper room.

Golden Oldies carpet bowls will also be held at the clubrooms from 10am on Friday, September 16.

The club is planning lunch at the Wangaratta Club next Wednesday from 12 noon.

NORTH East Prostate Cancer Support group will hold its next gathering this evening at the Northo in Spearing Street, Wangaratta.

GREEN THUMBS: Matthew Nevin, Brendan Spain and Jeffrey Ryan have been helping propagate plants which will be sold this Saturday to support the King Valley Learning Exchange in Moyhu. All are welcome to come and grab a bargain.

This week a group from Yooralla visited the exchange prior to the big weekend, where they continued their work propagating plants like hydrangeas, strawberries and all kinds of other plants which will be sold to raise money and help the centre to be sustainable.

tor helps those who come along to learn how to propagate - the group also enjoying lunch and a bit of bingo fun in the afternoon.

It’s just one of many educational and helpful sessions, courses and community-based initiatives which run from the exchange, supporting people in a wide variety of ways, from its home in the former Masonic Lodge.

On Saturday there here will be a food swap run by Moyhu Food Share where people can swap ex-

Monday’s racing meeting abandoned at Wangaratta

MONDAY’S meeting at the Wangaratta Turf Club was abandoned due to the state of the track.

Stewards made the call to cancel the races on Monday morning after surface water was found at the 1400 metre mark off the back of unexpected rainfall.

The abandonment makes it the third of 2022 for the turf club, including March’s Wan-

garatta Cup Day meeting.

Wangaratta Turf Club chief executive officer Sean Barrett was disappointed with the result.

“It’s not ideal, we haven’t had too much luck this year,” Barrett said.

“We had 5mm on Monday morning and after rain over the weekend that just wasn’t the top up we needed.”

“We looked at rescheduling it today (Tuesday) but it was just too hard trying to fit

it back in the schedule.

“We also weren’t confident that the track would be right today (Tuesday) either.”

The turf club is now gearing up for their Melbourne Cup Day races on November 1, as well as meets over Christmas.

CANCELLED: The Wangaratta Turf Cub’s Monday races were abandoned.

Dragons host hockey presentation THE Wangaratta Hockey Club held its club presentations on Sunday, including the much anticipated annual parents versus kids game.

The hotly contested game ended in a draw, with the parents managing to hold their own against a much more skillful opposition.

With a growing club, the numbers at the presentations were more than we have seen for many years.

It was a true family day with all ages represented.

The club also presented the juniors with their training shirts, ready for the twilight competition beginning on October 13.

Wangaratta Dragons are looking forward to the women playing in their grand final against Wodonga White on Saturday at 4:45pm in Albury.

With the ladies going into the match as the favourites they are feeling the pressure, however, they are confident that they have the ability to come out on top.

Milawa junior squash and racquetball season winding up MILAWA Racquets Club Junior competition will be winding up at the end of term three.

Huge thanks to the organisers whose enthusiasm is amazing.

It is wonderful to see the eagerness of the kids and how they are improving their skills.

They will have their finals night

next Friday, September 16.

The Monday night racquetball season has one more week to go before they break for the school holidays as well.

Competition has been fantastic with the teams being very evenly matched.

were the first game on Monday and set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Jane Dwyer and Meghan Gehrig had a very intense game with Jane finally being victorious in the third game.

Abbey McLaughlin and Jake Whitehead had a great game

and although Jake won in two games you could see (Abbey could feel) how she is improving each week.

The Thursday night men’s squash continues at full pace as well.

Everyone is enjoying being competitive in their team and it’s

great to be warming up on winter’s nights.

The halfway mark of the season has come and it won’t be long before both squash and racquetball finals are on everyone’s minds.

THE Ovens and Murray’s Morris and Toni Wilson medal counts have been moved to next Wednesday to avoid a potential clash with the funeral broadcast of Queen Elizabeth II. The league’s biggest night is traditionally held on the Monday night leading up to the grand final on the Sunday, however, O&M general manager Craig Millar

confirmed the awards night will now be staged on Wednesday, September 21.

“We anticipated that potentially something like this was going to happen but we were waiting for confirmation from the SS&A Club,” Millar said.

“We received that confirmation and due to a number of events and fundamentally trying to have

the Morris Medal count before the grand final, the only option we had available was September 21.”

The AFL has also rescheduled the Brownlow Medal count from Monday night but brought it forward to Sunday night instead.

Millar admitted that the switch of dates could impact some clubs’ preparations for the grand final.

final traditionally train on the Wednesday and Friday night in the lead up with the league’s biggest match played on the Sunday.

“There is no doubt that it is going to cause some level of disruption,” he said.

“But I think the key is that there is only a minimum number of players required to attend from each club.”

All abilities win caps off powerhouse year A CUP win by Wangaratta’s all abilities side on Saturday in the Albury Wodonga Football Association grand final day was the cherry on top of a fantastic year for the Red Devils.

The all abilities side trounced opponents Albury Hotspurs, frustratingly denied a clean sheet to take the victory 8-1.

As the only two all abilities sides in the league, the game was more of an exhibition match, but the victory was just as sweet.

Wangaratta City FC president and all abilities coach Kristy Mellor said her side was simply too good.

“They’re a really strong team, the all abilities boys, they’ve been playing together for a long time so they know how each other plays,” she said.

“My boys are tall, strong, and

have good skills.

“We were a lot stronger than Hotspurs, but Hotspurs had good players.

“We went up and played a game with Hotspurs on the day but there was no real build-up to that - it was like ‘bring your team, you can play Hotspurs because you’re the only two teams that have all abilities (sides)’.

“It was like an exhibition match, I suppose, rather than actually winning the league.”

With four other sides playing in grand finals - division one and two men, and the under 17 and 12 girls - Mellor said the club was

in a strong position to make another tilt at cups in the coming year.

“Disappointingly, we didn’t manage to win a grand final on the day, but we had some really close matches,” she said.

“We field every team including all abilities in the AWFA, I think there’s only one other team that does that and that’s Albury Hotspurs.

“Out of the 12 clubs, we came second in Club of the Year this year, and we won it in 2019.

“We are in a really strong position, it’s good being the only club in Wangaratta, we’re very lucky.

“We always fill our team, we’ve always got people wanting to play soccer.

“We are very strong and we will come back from our disappointment this year, definitely.”

Mellor said the Saturday matches held at the Lavington Sports Ground were a welcome factor, especially for the highoctane div one men’s final.

“I particularly liked the spectators were away from the playing pitch,” she said.

“In any kind of grand final or final, sometimes spectators’ emotions get the better of them, so having some really good stadium seating for spectators, which was away from the pitch but you still had a great view of the game.

“I think that really benefitted the players because they could just concentrate on their game and not worry about comments from the sidelines.

“I think, for safety reasons and the mental health of the payers, I actually think it was a really good setting.”

Oh so close for Devils ■

From back page Albury United’s Ben Hughes forced the game to be halted after dislocating his shoulder which forced seven minutes of added injury time.

The Devils knew they would need to play the game out to win but unfortunately couldn’t hold on.

“We knew we’d have to play 95 to 100 minutes of football if we were going to beat them but we lost concentration,” Vasilevski said.

“Alex Pitt was shattered after the game but I told him he wasn’t the reason that we lost.

“We had plenty of chances, ‘Burchy’ (Adam Burchell) and ‘DK’ (Dan Kelly) had a few they could’ve scored, so we probably could’ve captilised on our chances more.

“It’s a tough loss to swallow and it’s one that we may never get over.”

All in all though, Vasilevski was proud of the season his boys put up.

“I’m really happy with the season as a whole,” he said.

“We did really well considering the amount of injuries we had, as well as COVID at different times.

“I was having a look the other day and we used 24 different players in our senior side.

“We were changing our mid back and forward constantly as well so to make a final was really well done, even though it would’ve been amazing to win one.”

Magpies knock out Panthers to advance to prelim final

WANGARATTA’S A grade netballers are through to a preliminary off the back of a four goal victory over Lavington at Martin Park on Sunday.

The Magpies posted their third straight victory over the Panthers this season, prevailing in a tight 49-45 semi-final contest.

The game look destined for a tight tussle with scores locked up at quarter time.

Lavington then pushed out to a one goal buffer at the main

change, however, Wangaratta found their grove in the second half, with Amy Byrne excelling in goal attack to set up a preliminary final clash against arch-rivals Corowa-Rutherglen at Bunton Park on Sunday.

Wangaratta co-coach Chaye Crimmins was proud of her girls’ efforts.

“I’m super proud of the game and the effort the girls put in on Sunday,” Crimmins said.

“Both times we played them it was a good game.

“They have been one of the top teams all year, so it was great to get over the line and play some good netball.”

For Crimmins, it was Wangaratta’s defence that set the win up.

“I think it was our patience with the ball especially in our attacking end,” she said.

“Then our full court defence was great as well.

“We played our netball and didn’t worry so much about what they would do.”

games for the season, netting 17 goals, while setting plenty up for Wangaratta’s star shooter Georgia Clark who finished the day with 32.

“Amy played an awesome game,” Crimmins said.

“She shot well, moved well and defended well.

“She was able to open up pretty freely too.

“Amy and Georgia were able to mix it up and provide easy opportunities for themselves.”

Lavington’s star defender Sarah Meredith was named their

best player, while Maddy Plunkett (26 goals), Emily Stewart (13) and Christine Oguche (6) made up their team’s total.

The Magpies now move on to a scintillating clash against CorowaRutherglen to book a spot in this year’s grand final against Yarrawonga.

The Roos finished the home and away season on top and will be eager to not fall in straight sets, while Wangaratta will be hoping to get their first win for the year over the minor premiers when it counts.

ONE of the greatest A grade preliminary finals in recent years was played at Tarrawingee on Saturday, when the battle between Milawa and Tarrawingee had to go to extra time to decide a winner.

The Demons fought through, taking the win 54-46 at the conclusion of the two seven minute extra halves to book a place in this Saturday’s grand final match against Greta.

The final scoreline does not reflect the intensity and closeness of the game, which saw the margin at each break within three goals.

Milawa coach Stacey Lamb said the match captured just how incredible finals netball was to play.

“It was the perfect prelim final, I would think,” she said.

“It was amazing - the atmosphere was electric, the crowd, the weather, all the players put on a show.

“It was within two or three all day, we’d get two or three up and they’d get two or three up.

“They’re a great side and we knew that we would have to play our best and we did, we got on top in that last bit of extra time which really made it really interesting.”

This see-sawing preliminary final action revved the crowd up, and as the final seconds of the fourth term ticked away, scores were level at 40-40.

Changes were made and as extra time began, Milawa showed their class and, with a bit of luck, the Demons emerged triumphant.

Lamb said the side had been preparing for the prospect of a final going to extra time, and the entirety of her squad came together to get the result.

“When it went into extra time I thought that was really good for us, we still had a bench and we’re quite fit and ready to go and, unfortunately for Tarra’, they’d lost a couple of players throughout the game,” she said.

“Going into overtime we had fresh legs and we made a couple of changes, and it worked really well in our favour.

“I thought Shani Rickard was brilliant, and Kyra

Clarke in defence was consistent all day.

“Tahlia Matthews-Vincent came off the bench and was electric for us, she got some amazing intercepts that sort of fuelled the team and gave us some energy.

“Alyse Hedin came off the bench into centre to play a role and she did that really well.

“Mic Cose shot beautifully, but it was a whole team effort because we used all nine players and we used them well.”

For the defeated Tarrawingee, events just didn’t go their way, capping off an impressive tilt at finals.

“It was just to-ing and froing the whole day,” she said.

“That was probably the disappointing thing, that end result probably didn’t replicate the closeness of the match.

“A couple of weeks ago we were sitting at seventh, and I don’t think people gave us much consideration that we could even be in and fighting in a preliminary final.

“I think it was a great team effort for those girls to get to that preliminary final position.”

Jay Barker looked poised to save the shot but was left red-faced when the ball somehow squeezed between his legs and rolled over the line to give Wangaratta a 1-0 lead.

Alex Pitt charged Melkie Woldemichael who was given a last-gasp penalty kick to force extra time.

From there, Ramesh Basnet fired the Greens in front during the second extra period before Woldemichael scored from the halfway line to

spark a pitch invasion.

It was a harsh result for Wangaratta who was the better side for the majority of the 90 minutes.

Wangaratta City coach Daniel Vasilevski was shattered with the result.

“It’s probably the worst way to lose,” Vasilevski said.

“It’s the second time United’s done that to us because they beat us with a late penalty in the FA Cup final.

“We were the better side for 96 and a half minutes but 20 seconds lost it for us.

“We knew if it went to extra time that we’d be chasing the game a little bit and exactly that happened.”
