TRAFFIC WOES

Congestion g in Wangaratta’s g CBD and surrounding g roads under the microscope p

TRAFFIC congestion ti iin Wangaratta’s CBD has been under the microscope to give insight into where and how problems could be addressed to help commuters and freight get to their destinations quicker. Council employed the assistance of consultants One Mile to assess traffic profiles in the CBD and surrounding areas, with detailed records gathered of the number of vehicles, their location and frequency accessing the city.

Marsha McMonigle, council’s manager of infrastructure, planning and delivery, said the traffic movements are central to the Rural City of Wangaratta developing a traffic management plan to improve traffic flow throughout Wangaratta’s

central business district. t lb i di ti t “This investigation has involved extensive data collection across the CBD which is now complete,” she said. “There were three types of main data which will be analysed. “Intersection counters were used which count the traffic volumes at key intersections, in between sections there were tube traffic counters (black strips) which the cars drive over,

and there were tturning d th i movement cameras placed at intersections. “There were four main intersections where these were set up including Green and Rowan streets, Greta Road and Riley Street, Warby and Riley streets and the Great Alpine Road turnoff.” All of these areas are the surrounding approaches to the CBD, which is between Chisholm Street in the east, Green Street in the west, Warby Street in the south

and the A Apex P Park the d th k iin th north. While council did not want to indicate where the congestion was occurring until the study findings are analysed, most locals would have a fair idea as to which roads and what times of day they become congested. To name a few, these include Rowan Street city bound before school drop-off and after pick-up, Parfitt Road before 9am and after 5pm, and Murphy and Riley

streets times t t att varying i ti during weekdays. There has also been a long running debate over whether Wangaratta needs another Ovens River crossing to ease congestion on Rowan Street and Parfitt Road routes. “We are now looking to take these results and we'll engage with key stakeholders from the community and once this is finalised, the results will be taken to council for consideration,” Ms McMonigle said.
