OPEN GARDEN FOR CAREVAN LES and Rosemary Bolitho will open their magnificent Sable Park garden to the public this weekend for the first time in two years; all to raise money for Carevan Wangaratta. Les is pictured next one of the many features of the garden, the Willows Pond, which was once a farm dam used for reticulation and drainage. See the full story on page 12. PHOTO: Kurt Hickling
EXTENDED POUR FORECAST downpours of more than 100mm over the coming days could see flooding once again spread throughout the North East, as consistent dry weather continues to elude Wangaratta. Daily outlooks issued by the Bureau of Meteorology anticipate up to 25mm of rain could fall on the rural city today, with as much as 70mm of torrential rain forecast tomorrow. SES Hume region duty

officer Charlie Sexton said crews had been prepared for flooding for weeks. “Given that all major rivers throughout the region have been under a flood watch or warning over the last several weeks, our VICSES personnel

have been in a state of readiness and monitoring for some time,” he said. “For the forthcoming weather event, we have reviewed our command and control arrangements on advice from our regional control team, who continuously monitor conditions, as well as briefing all of our volunteer units with the latest weather intelligence.
“As the weather system moves through the region, it will become clearer where impacts will be felt accordingly, our volunteers from less-affected parts will be mobilized to support their colleagues as they manage those impacts.” He said those who live, work or visit areas on lowlying land, close to creeks or rivers or near major stormwater drains who take
action could reduce the impacts of flooding by up to 80 per cent. Between four and 10mm of rain is expected to fall on Friday, with the region’s minimum projected rainfall for the three day period just shy of 70mm. Local SES crews were yesterday deliberating whether a sandbag collection point would be established for the region, following
a slew of inquiries lodged to the state office amid statewide flooding concerns. Sandbag collection points are only established by SES crews in areas of significant flooding, with households under-threat recommended to use 25 sandbags to stagger walls near doorways and to cover drainage holes within the home. Sandbags can be purchased from local hardware stores. ■ Continued page 3
