Sporting chance WANGARATTA is on the front foot ahead of a statewide effort announced this week to supply women and girls with better access to community sporting facilities. Many females don’t have access to the best courts or grounds, with facilities of lesser standard, or are relegated to less convenient competition and training times, which makes it difficult for many

to participate or reach their best in their chosen sport. The State Government this week released its Fair Access Policy Roadmap that aims to develop a statewide foundation to
improve the access to, and use of, community sports infrastructure for women and girls. While Wangaratta’s premier facility at the Norm Minns Oval has limited female changerooms, planning works are already well advanced to address this as part of a $2 million Bushfire Recovery grant for a Relief Centre Project.
Tony Goodison, who is in charge of showgrounds development at Wangaratta Magpies Football Netball Club, said female netballers currently have to coordinate use of the newer change rooms with the Murray Bushrangers at training during the week, or they have to share the rooms with opposition teams on game day.
But he said the new works will allow the netball, all abilities and junior league netball sides, along with female football players, to use the changerooms that are up to today’s standards. “Female footballers also currently have to use the umpires changerooms and a designated female change room within the
building would be more accommodating,” Mr Goodison said. The extension will be located behind the existing old clubrooms involving a structure of about 7 x 14 metres in scale and it will include the modification of the existing netball and football meeting room as well. ■ Continued page 2
